At 480 miles away, the Grand Canyon—one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the world—is no small side trip from Los Angeles. The least stressful way to get to the national park from LA is to sign up with a tour company that includes transportation. However, planning a DIY trip is also doable, and there are many ways to get there by driving, flying, or taking the bus or train.

Unless you're driving there, all other modes of transportation will probably mean passing through Flagstaff, Arizona , the city closest to the park. Remember that you may ultimately need to rent a car in Flagstaff and drive the rest of the way to the park yourself.

If time is a factor, having a car will give you the most freedom to navigate and explore the 1.2 million-acre park, but it's up to you whether you want to drive your own car or hop on a direct flight to Flagstaff and rent a car when you get there. Neither option is costly, with many one-way flights starting a little above $100, which is about the same amount you'd spend on gas and other road trip expenses .

If money is a factor, you might assume the bus would be a more cost-effective option, but even at its cheapest, it's almost as expensive as flying, takes 13 hours, and is not a direct route. You could also take an overnight train directly from Los Angeles to Flagstaff, but this tends to be just as expensive as the bus and takes about 10 hours. Not to mention, once you arrive in Flagstaff by train, bus, or plane, you will still have to find a way to get to the park, 82 miles to the north.

How to Get From Los Angeles to the Grand Canyon

  • Train: 13 hours, 30 minutes, from $65
  • Plane: 1 hour, 30 minutes, from $100
  • Bus: 13 hours, from $55
  • Car: 8 hours, 486 miles

If your heart is set on train travel, Amtrak runs a nightly train service from Los Angeles' Union Station to Flagstaff on their Southwest Chief Route . It leaves L.A. around 6 p.m. and enters Flagstaff around 5:30 a.m. the following day. Many people prefer traveling by train as it allows them to enjoy the scenery rolling past their window, but remember that this is an overnight journey and you probably won't be seeing much.

You can book an economical coach seat or pay a higher rate for a Superliner Roomette that accommodates two passengers with fold-down beds and meals. The return train departs Flagstaff at about 9:30 p.m. and returns to LA shortly after 8 a.m. the next day.

The closest airport to the Grand Canyon is the Flagstaff Pulliam Airport, which you can fly direct to from Los Angeles via multiple airlines, including American, Alaska, and United Airlines.

Direct flights run all week and are available throughout the day from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., so you shouldn't have trouble finding a flight that meets your itinerary's needs.

Greyhound offers bus service to Flagstaff, with buses departing at various times. Some routes require a transfer in Phoenix or Las Vegas, and some are direct. It's a long journey that takes 13 hours, but free Wi-Fi is available to stay connected and keep yourself entertained.

If you are considering the bus, it's worth looking into tour packages from various companies that can shuttle you there for a price that's not that much more expensive than the bus and often include meals and transportation around the park.

If you have your own car or rent one in LA , driving is still the most economical way to see the Grand Canyon. Most first-time visitors explore the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, as Grand Canyon Village provides various lodging, camping, and eating options. Also, it's closer to LA. However, if you've already toured the South Rim or want to escape the crowds, the North Rim is your better bet. Remember that the North Rim is not accessible in the winter when route 67 is closed for the season.

Driving directly to the South Rim takes about eight hours, barring traffic. Start traveling east on Interstate 10 if you're coming from downtown L.A., on Interstate 210 if you're coming from the Valley, or on State Route 91 if you're coming from southern beach towns or Orange County. Then, take Interstate 15 north toward Las Vegas. In Barstow, take Interstate 40 east to Flagstaff. Arizona State Route 64 (just before you get to Flagstaff) takes you to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.

To get to the North Rim , depart L.A. as you would for the South Rim, then stay on Interstate 15 until you get to Washington, Utah (about an hour and a half north of Las Vegas). Exit on Route 9 East (State Street) and take it to Utah State Route 59 South, which will become Arizona State Route 389 South when you hit the border. In Fredonia, turn right onto Arizona State Route 89A South. Then, at the Kaibab Plateau Visitor Center, turn right on Route 67 south (Grand Canyon Highway). You'll find the Jacob Lake Inn and Restaurant and the last gas station before you hit the North Rim.

What to See in the Grand Canyon

There's so much to see and do in the Grand Canyon that one day is really not enough time to take it all in. There are many ways to see the canyon , from helicopter tours that will give you the best aerial views of the park to camping tours, which will let you immerse yourself in its wonder.

If you're working with a short timeframe and want the best views for a photo-op, prioritize the Mather Point Overlook on the South Rim and the Coconino Overlook on the North Rim.

There are many ways to get to the Grand Canyon, including driving, flying, or taking the bus or train. Driving is the most economical way to see the Grand Canyon.

The Grand Canyon is 480 miles away from L.A. The drive takes about eight hours, depending on traffic.

The flight is about 1 hour, 15 minutes and lands at the Flagstaff Pulliam Airport.

The Grand Canyon is a natural basin in Northern Arizona that was carved over millions of years by the Colorado River. The Grand Canyon sits in Grand Canyon National Park and it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The South Rim is the most popular and accessible portion of the park, and it is the best place to visit if you are seeing the Canyon for the first time, or if you are starting from Los Angeles (LA). There are a number of ways to get from Los Angeles, California to the Grand Canyon, including car, plane, bus, train, shuttle and tour company. LA and the Grand Canyon are approximately 410 miles (660 km) apart by air. Read more to find out how to travel from Los Angeles to the Grand Canyon.

Step 1 Rent a car in Los Angeles, if you don't have one.

  • This is the most direct route to the Grand Canyon from Los Angeles, because other modes of transportation require you to go through Flagstaff, Arizona.
  • You can also follow I-40 to Flagstaff, Arizona, and then take Route 180 north to the Grand Canyon. This will take approximately 1 hour longer to drive.

Step 1 Go to the Amtrak website, amtrak.com, and reserve a ticket from Los Angeles, Union Station to Flagstaff, Arizona

  • Choose your date. The train from LAX to FLG usually runs every day. It leaves at 6:15 PM and arrives in Flagstaff at approximately 5:30 AM the next morning.

Step 2 Schedule a seat on a tour bus or shuttle from Flagstaff.

  • Open Road Tours runs a bus most days. They also run historic train ride tours and plane tours. These tours can cost between $50 and $500 depending upon your length of stay and modes of transportation.

Step 3 Arrive at the train station in advance on the day of your travel.

  • The trip will cost between $60 and $90. You will save money by booking in advance online.

Step 2 Schedule a tour or shuttle from Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon.

  • Mesa, US Airways, Ameriflight and Empire Airlines all serve the Flagstaff airport.
  • The flights will take between 4 and 6 hours. This is likely to be the most expensive way to travel from Los Angeles to the Grand Canyon. Flights often run between $400 and $600.

Step 2 Take a tour or a shuttle from Flagstaff to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.

What people love about grand canyon tours.

Fabulous! I just returned from Bindlestiff's Grand Canyon & more 3 day tour. It was Fabulous! It provided a well-planned itinerary of fascinating places (Zion National Park, Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon (optional & a must!), Monument Valley & the Grand Canyon. We were a perfect size group of twelve international travelers in a comfy van plus our delightful Tour Guide, Jade. We had enough time to immerse ourselves in each location and enjoy each experience. When on the road, Jade played upbeat themed music, weaved interested facts into a story and allowed quiet snooze time; plus the rest stops were well-spaced. On the first day we actually were in 3 states!!! Jade's yummy restaurant selections served the needs of each of the travelers' dietary requirements and the overnight accommodations were clean, comfortable & provided a nourishing breakfast. A special shout-out to Jade for her ability to ""herd cats"" while being attentive to each traveler's personal needs. She engaged with each of us in conversation and was delightful with a good sense of humor. A warm Thank You to Jade and Bindlestiff Tours!!!
Tour guide a great humanist able to reach out to all, domestic and foreign, to first form individual friendships that then led collectively to group bonding to experience nature's wonders. All members of our group became friends sharing the influence of our guide who understands human nature the way God would have it.
Overall, the tour was very fun and we'll put together. The tour guides were all friendly, and seemed to work well as a team. Accomodations were not bad, but there were better options directly adjacent. Food options were pretty much all fast food, which makes sense for the tour concept. However, dinner options could have been a bit better. We really would have appreciated a little more hiking and exploring time, and a couple of the guides did the best to accommodate that. However, 20 minute stops are just not enough time to get "out and experience" the areas.

The Ultimate Guide to the Best Grand Canyon Bus Tours

For those looking for a scenic and grand tour of the Grand Canyon, bus tours are a great option! From luxury tours to more budget-friendly options, these tours offer something for everyone. Some of the best bus tours offer amazing views of the canyon, while others focus on history or wildlife. Whatever your interests are, there is likely a bus tour out there designed specifically for you!

What are the different types of bus tours available to see the Grand Canyon?

There are many different types of bus tours available to see the Grand Canyon. These include luxury tours, which can last for hours, as well as more budget-friendly options that last for just a few minutes.

When it comes to the best time of year to visit the Grand Canyon, it depends on the tour you choose. Some tours are available during the summer months, while others are available during the winter months. All of the tours, however, offer something unique and exciting for passengers.

How long will each tour last?

Different types of tours in the Grand Canyon vary in length, but on average, they will last around 3-4 hours. Luxury tours can last up to 8 hours, while budget-friendly options are typically around 2-3 hours long. The best time to take a bus tour to the canyon is during the warmer months, when the views are at their fullest.

While there are pros and cons to each tour type, the vast majority of visitors enjoy a luxury bus tour. These tours offer an immersive experience that is difficult to find elsewhere in the United States. On the other hand, budget-friendly options are perfect for those who want to see the canyon without spending an arm and a leg. Additionally, these tours are often more informative than luxury options as they include more stops and commentary.

What are the best times of year to take a bus tour to the Grand Canyon?

There are many different types of bus tours to the Grand Canyon, and each offers a unique perspective on the canyon.

The best time of year to view the Grand Canyon from a bus is during the spring and fall months. This is when the weather is warm and sunny, and there is little chance of rain.

In the winter, bus tours can be a bit too cold and rainy for some visitors. However, it’s still a great time to see the canyon from a bus due to the stunning views of the canyon in wintertime.

Summertime can be too hot and full of humidity for some, but it’s still the best time of year to take a bus tour to the Grand Canyon. The bright colors and vibrancy of the canyon in summer are a sight to behold.

The bus tours operating to the Grand Canyon in the winter and early spring are the most popular, but come with the highest prices. If money is not an issue, however, these tours are definitely worth considering.

What should passengers expect on a bus tour to the Grand Canyon?

When traveling to the Grand Canyon, visitors can expect a variety of tour options and experiences. Some luxury tours allow for more hiking and climbing than others, while some tour options include stops for lunch and dinner. All buses tend to be air conditioned, so passengers can rest assured during their tour. Regardless of the tour type, most bus tours allow for scenic views of the Colorado River while taking passengers to more remote areas of the canyon.

Some things to keep in mind when choosing a bus tour to take to the Grand Canyon: length of the tour, time of year, and availability of tours. Tours can be short or long, and are available year round. The best time of year to visit the canyon is during summer, when temperatures are milder but crowds are smaller. For those who want the ultimate experience, it is recommended that they book a designated tour that takes them to the most remote areas of the canyon.

What are the pros and cons of each tour option?

On a luxury bus tour to the Grand Canyon, passengers will enjoy stunning views of the canyon from the bus.

However, this tour is quite expensive and may not be feasible for all visitors.

On a budget-friendly bus tour to the Grand Canyon, passengers will still see all of the beauty of the canyon, but at a lower price point.

Different times of year offer different experiences for visitors to the Grand Canyon.

For instance, during springtime, visitors can see wildflowers blooming in the canyon while in the fall they can watch leaves fall off the trees.

Some tours include breakfast and lunch while others only offer snacks.

A tour to the Grand Canyon is an amazing experience that should not be missed!

Taking a bus tour to the Grand Canyon is a great way to experience the canyon in a more relaxing and scenic way. There are many different types of bus tours available, and each offers its own unique features and advantages. The best time to take a tour is usually during the warmer months, as the canyon has more tourists in the summer. Be sure to research each tour carefully before selecting one, as the differences among them can be significant.

A trip to Las Vegas wouldn't be complete without experiencing the awe-inspiring natural wonders just outside of it, such as the Grand Canyon. Tourists and locals alike will enjoy a break from the bright lights and bustling city on a bus tour to the Grand Canyon. As one of the largest natural canyons on Earth, the Grand Canyon is more than 270 miles long, meaning there are multiple destinations to explore; the most popular are the South and West Rims.

We've rounded up the top options for Grand Canyon bus tours from Las Vegas, whether you seek an adventurous ride or a more tranquil sightseeing experience.

Best Overall: Grand Canyon West Rim Bus/Helicopter & Landing Tour with Optional Skywalk

Tour operator: Canyon Tours

Price: From $358 per person

Duration: About 10 hours

Visitors can experience the ultimate Grand Canyon bus tour paired with an unforgettable helicopter ride down to the floor of the canyon. The adventure begins on an air-conditioned tour bus that departs from the Vegas Strip and carries passengers to the West Rim. From there, passengers will board a helicopter that descends 4,000 feet, landing on the floor of the canyon. Visitors can explore the canyon floor before reboarding the motorcoach and continuing onto Grand Canyon West, which is home to Guano Point, Eagle Point and Hualapai Ranch. You'll also have the option to brave the world-famous glass Skywalk for sweeping views (and an additional fee).

Local tip: Grand Canyon West is located on the Hualapai Indian Reservation, which is owned and operated by the Hualapai Tribal Nation. Best West Rim Tour: Grand Canyon West Rim Bus Tour with Lunch, Hoover Dam Stop and Skywalk

Tour operator: Grand Canyon Destinations

Price: From $99 per person

Duration: About 11 hours

This tour will show you the best that the West Rim has to offer, including the glass-bottomed Grand Canyon Skywalk bridge (for an added fee). A must-see lookout point at the West Rim is Guano Point, from which you can hike to Highpoint Hike and get a view of the Colorado River.

A lunch box, snacks and plenty of water are included with the tour. You can also choose from several upgrades, including a Skywalk admission ticket, a helicopter ride or a boat excursion.

You can also stock up on snacks and souvenirs at the Grand Canyon Visitor Center, since the tour only includes a box lunch and water. Or, upgrade your excursion with the guided walking tour add-on. Another historic part of the tour is the scenic drive along the famous Route 66, one of the first U.S. highways.

Local tip: Located farther from Vegas, the South Rim is cooler, with rainy and snowy winters, and more moderate temperatures in spring, summer and fall.

The professional comedian who doubles as tour guide makes for an even more fun experience.

Local tip: The West Rim is typically less crowded than the South Rim, so it may be a good option for your Grand Canyon destination if you're hoping to avoid all the tourist congestion.

Things To Do

Travel | what you need to know before you go to a national park this summer.

bus tours from la to grand canyon

The National Park Service has tightened access at the most popular of the 63 national parks to reduce crowding and traffic jams, which have become worse as visitor counts have soared.

A timed-entry reservation system has been put into effect, with the goal of spreading out visitation throughout the day, to avoid nightmare traffic jams and gruesomely long waits, officials said.

Arches National Park is among the national parks that now require reservations. (AP Photo/Beth Harpaz)

Typically, reservations are required during peak visitor hours, such as 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. (If you arrive before or after those hours, you won’t need one.) Check the National Park Service website for each park for details.  And if you already have camping or other permits or activity reservations, entrance reservations aren’t required.

Sometimes timed entry tickets are required to get into historic homes, to board ferries or to drive specific roads, such as the Going-To-The-Sun Road in Glacier National Park. Each park has its own rules.

Here are the national parks and monuments requiring reservations at this writing, though you should really check the website to make sure there haven’t been any changes. (And note that some state parks and recreation areas have also jumped on the bandwagon. See details below.)

  • Acadia National Park, Maine
  • Adams National Historical Park, Massachusetts
  • Arches National Park, Utah
  • Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico
  • Ellis Island Part of Statue of Liberty National Monument, New York
  • Ford’s Theatre, Washington, DC
  • Fort Matanzas National Monument, Florida (Ferry ticket)
  • Frederick Douglass National Historic Site, Washington, DC
  • Gateway Arch National Park, Missouri
  • Glacier National Park, Montana (Going-to-the-Sun Road eastbound, the North Fork, and Many Glacier areas)
  • Haleakalā National Park, Maui, Hawaii (for sunrise viewing only)
  • Independence National Historical Park, Pennsylvania
  • Mount Rainier, Washington
  • Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial, Ohio (Memorial Deck only)
  • Redwood National and State Parks, California (required only for Gold Bluffs Beach and Fern Canyon)
  • Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado
  • Sagamore Hill National Historic Site (Theodore Roosevelt House) New York
  • Statue Of Liberty National Monument, New York
  • Thomas Edison National Historical Park (To visit Edison home) New Jersey
  • Timpanogos Cave National Monument, Utah (Cave tour required)
  • Washington Monument, Washington, DC (elevator to the top. Some same-day passes available)
  • Yosemite National Park, California

Perhaps interestingly, you won’t need a reservation to visit Yellowstone National Park, at least not as of this writing.

Clouds hang below the summit of Haleakala volcano in Haleakala National Park on Hawaii's island of Maui, Monday, Jan. 23, 2017. Park officials say the sunrise on Haleakala attracts over a thousand people a day, resulting in an overload of visitors and creating a safety hazard. As a result, anyone wanting to see the sunrise on the summit will now be required to make reservations in advance and pay a small fee. (Photo by Caleb Jones, The Associated Press)

And, while we’re on the subject, note that you may need a special advance permit to visit certain overcrowded attractions, such as the popular Angels Landing hike at Zion National Park in Utah. You don’t need a timed ticket to get into Zion (although you do have to ride a shuttle bus), however if you want to make this popular hike, you’ll need a permit in advance.

In addition to your timed entry ticket, you’ll also need to pay the fee is for that particular park on arrival, or have a pass that enables you to enter free, such as a senior, military, disabled or 4th grader pass.

How to reserve a timed-entry National Park ticket

These are available in advance on the Recreation.gov website or mobile app. It’s a good idea to get one as soon as your plans are firm.

There will be a limited number of last minute timed-entry tickets made available at 6 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time on the night before. These will probably go quickly, so be ready.

Glacier National Park in Montana now requires reservations as a way of managing crowds. (AP Photo/Beth J. Harpaz)

How to book: Go to the Recreation.gov website or app (you must create an account) or call the reservation line at 877-444-6777. Reservations cannot be booked at park offices.  It costs $2 to make a reservation. This is not refundable.

What about National Forest sites?

Yes, it’s true. We haven’t finished listing all the types of places you might need a reservation. At the most popular National Forest fun spots, expect to find that you’ll also need to book in advance. For example, at the Coconino National Forest in Arizona, the Fossil Creek Wild and Scenic River trails and waterfall require advance booking on Recreation.gov .

It’s not a bad idea to double check, so you don’t get shut out.

Mount Rainier National Park in Washington now requires resrevations. (Photo by Mark Rightmire, Orange County Register/SCNG)

Reservations for state parks

And even some particularly popular state parks are now requiring advance reservations. You’re not getting in without one, so take heed. The downside is that you have to pay for the reservations. The upside is that you’ll be able to find a place to park.

Here are a few of the most popular:

Reservations cost $5 per person, plus $10 parking. They can be made up to 30 days in advance. (Make a reservation here: gostateparks.hawaii.gov )

  •   Waiʻānapanapa State Park and its black sand beach along the Road to Hana in Maui.
  • Īao Valley State Monument,  Maui
  • Diamond Head State Monument. Oahu
  • Hāʻena State Park, Kauai

Advance purchase day passes are not mandatory but parks do fill up, so these “Save The Day” passes are highly recommended. Texas has 84 state parks. Here are some of the most heavily visited. (Reserve here: tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/reservations  or call 1-512-389-8900.)

  • Balmorhea State Park
  • Brazos Bend State Park
  • Cedar Hill State Park
  • Dinosaur Valley State Park
  • Enchanted Rock State Natural Area
  • Garner State Park
  • Inks Lake State Park
  • McKinney Falls State Park
  • Palo Duro Canyon State Park
  • Ray Roberts Lake State Park

Nevada requires $5 advance day use reservations only for the Big Bend of the Colorado State Recreation Area . In Tennesee , only the Cummins Falls State Park requires a $6 access permit. So it goes without saying that if you’re planning to see a state park or national forest recreation area that you know is popular, it’s never a bad idea to find out if you need  to book it in advance.

But for others, it’s the exact motivation for a trek to Death Valley during the summer: The novelty of experiencing temperatures you’d be hard-pressed to find elsewhere around the globe. “Some folks are seeking out what they consider to be a rare experience,” Nichole Andler, a park ranger with the U.S. National Park Service, said during a media briefing. But it should go without saying that when heat […]

The #1 Las Vegas Grand Canyon Tour – Discover the Best of the Grand Canyon with MaxTour Las Vegas

Recently, on a day off from partying with the best Las Vegas Club Crawl I had the incredible opportunity to join one of MaxTour Las Vegas’ Grand Canyon tours, and it was an adventure I’ll never forget. From the moment our guide, Chad, picked us up on The Strip, I knew we were in for something special.

An Iconic Start

Our day began with a friendly greeting from Chad, who gave us a quick rundown of what to expect. We made our first stop at the iconic Las Vegas Sign for a quick photo op. Elvis was there waiting, ready for pictures (and NOT aggressively asking for tips)!

Back at the car, we were greeted with an amazing breakfast spread in the trunk. Muffins, fruit, chips, and a great selection of drinks were available.  And being a heavy snacker… I was happy to learn these snacks were available and restocked at every stop!

7 Magic Mountains

Next stop… 7 Magic Mountains art installation. Chad shared some fascinating history about the art installation, as well as guided us to the best photo spots. He was happy to snap as many pictures as we wanted, ensuring everyone got their perfect shot.

Chad once again impressed us with his knowledge, sharing historical insights and guiding us to the best vantage points of the Dam. After thoroughly exploring and taking photos, we had some free time to explore before continuing our journey on the road.

Lunch and a Surprise Stop

We made a quick stop for lunch at Subway before Chad informed us of a surprise, bonus visit to the Joshua Tree Forest . This unexpected detour was a highlight for many of us, as we took a short five-minute walk through the forest, learning about the world’s largest concentration of Joshua trees. The beauty of these trees was mesmerizing.

The Legendary Grand Canyon Experience

Finally, we arrived to the Grand Canyon, where we visited 2 viewpoints. the first, Guano Point, absolutely blew my mind and any and all expectations I had. The 360-unobstructed views of the canyon from all angles were simply breathtaking. We explored this magnificent spot for an hour, and every moment filled us with awe.

The second stop was Eagle Point, home to the famous Skywalk. While this location was beautiful and offered a unique perspective, it couldn’t quite compare to the grandeur of Guano Point. Nonetheless, it was an enjoyable experience and provided more fantastic photo opportunities.

The Journey Home

As we began our easy ride home, I couldn’t help but reflect on what an incredible day it had been. Chad’s knowledge, enthusiasm, and attention to detail made the tour exceptional. Every stop was well-planned, and the entire experience felt seamless and thoughtful.
