6 Outstanding Breweries in Burlington Vermont

By Author Tara Schatz

Posted on Published: August 6, 2024

Vermont is a magnet for beer lovers.

The state has more craft breweries per capita than any other US state, and Burlington, Vermont’s largest city, is one of the best spots to imbibe in your favorite craft brews.

A collage of photos featuring Burlington Vermont breweries.

It’s not all about the beer—the city is known for its gorgeous lakefront setting, foodie culture, and walkable downtown. But if you’ve got craft beer on your mind and want to try a selection of Vermont’s finest sudsy beverages, head to Burlington for a weekend .

But first, download the Vermont Brewers Association app — where you can find Vermont breweries, earn rewards, create your own beer trails, and participate in brewery challenges.

And speaking of beer trails, all of the Burlington breweries mentioned below are part of the Burlington beer trail.

Most are within biking distance of each other, and all of the breweries we visited are dog-friendly, at least during the summer when you can sit outside with them.

Some of these spots serve mouth-watering meals to accompany their amazing selection of beers. Others allow you to bring your own food or provide snacky menu items.

We love Vermont eats as much as we love Vermont beers, so we’ll be sure to highlight some of our favorite breweries for noshing, too.

There are 11 beer trails throughout Vermont — be sure to explore them all.

From the hoppiest New England IPAs to authentic German-style brews and over-the-top sours, here are the most incredible breweries in Burlington, Vermont, for your next craft beer getaway.

Want someone else to do the driving? Hop on the Brew Bus for an insider look at Burlington’s craft brewery scene. The  Burlington Brewery tour  brings you to four breweries and includes a beer-themed meal at a local restaurant.

Burlington Beer Company: Eclectic Meals, Fantastic Brews

Located in a 120-year-old brick building in Burlington’s South End, within walking distance of Oakledge Park, Burlington Beer Company (BBCO) has been shaking up the local beer industry since 2014.

If you are looking for a fantastic menu to accompany an eclectic selection of beers, you will love all the fun pairings you can create at Burlington Beer Company.

There are too many beer selections to choose from, but they make it easy with four flight options to help you get to know the beers a little better.

Are you a beer lover planning a trip to Vermont's largest city? Here are the best breweries in Burlington Vermont to add to your list.

We are lucky to be able to find four packs of BBCO beer near home, so I already had some favorites when we visited the taproom in July.

I went with a seasonal flight, which consisted of four shots of summer—Strawberry Whale Cake, Raspberry Whale Cake, Double Easy Tiger, and Double Sunken City. This collection of gose and cream ales was exactly what I needed as I watched the sunset on a 100-degree day.

During our summer visit, BBCO had 30 beers on tap, plus a nice selection of ciders, kombucha, wine, cocktails, and non-alcoholic beers.

We would have visited Burlington Beer for the drinks alone, but this vegetarian was also surprised and delighted by the food.

The menu includes several great salads, sandwiches, and entrees.

I opted for a seitan grain bowl with farro, roasted mushrooms, shredded cabbage, crispy chickpeas, and Greek-style seitan. Even my meat-eating companions were a bit envious.

Zero Gravity Craft Brewery: Hoppy and Hoppin’ Burlington Brewery

Address: 716 Pine Street, Burlington, VT Dogs: Yes, outside Outdoor seating: Yes Reservations: No reservations accepted Hours: Sunday – Thursday, 8 am – 9 pm, Friday – 8 am – 10 pm

The front entrance to Zero Gravity Brewery in Burlington Vermont.

Zero Gravity Craft Brewery is open from 8 a.m. for coffee and waffles (get the maple latte) and seamlessly transitions to beer and a small but delicious food menu at 2 p.m.

Of all the Burlington breweries we visited this summer (for research, of course), Zero Gravity was the busiest, with the longest wait for a table.

The yummy food and delightful beers were well worth the wait, though, and we were able to play a rowdy game of pool while scouting for a table.

A dog-friendly covered patio is a perfect spot to relax on a rainy summer afternoon, and if you visit during the winter months, you can chill on a comfy sofa in front of a crackling fire.

A vegetarian meal at Zero Gravity Brewery in Burlington Vermont.

At Zero Gravity, you place your order at the counter, grab your beer, and chillax while you wait for your food.

While the menu is limited, our food was quick, beautifully presented, and super yummy. Eric can never resist a bratwurst, especially when it comes with house-made sauerkraut. I had the chickpea fritter plate.

Since it was raining, I opted for my first stout of the trip — an Irish-style Extra Stout, which was so chocolatey and dark that I was forced to skip dessert.

Zero Gravity beers are widely available throughout Vermont, but you can get some unusual selections from the cooler to take home for your nightcap.

They also have a great merch selection for all your gift-giving needs.

Queen City Brewery: Authentic German-Style Beer

Address: 703-B Pine Street, Burlington, VT (right across the street from Zero Gravity) Dogs: Yes, inside and out Outdoor seating: Yes Reservations: Queen City does not serve food, but you can order pizza next door at Pizza 44 or bring your own food. Hours: Sunday – Thursday, 1 pm-8 pm; Friday – Saturday, 12 pm-9 pm

burlington vermont brewery tour

Queen City Brewery was founded in 2012 with a mission to create traditional beer styles. In a craft beer world that is largely dominated by fruity IPAs, Queen City stands out with its robust collection of German-style beers, including a smooth Munich Dunkel, easy-drinking Vienna Lager, and the classic Yorkshire Porter.

When we visited Queen City, we were longing for something a bit more traditional and less hoppy, and we were delighted with the offerings!

Because Queen City does not operate a kitchen, dogs are welcome indoors and out.

We opted for patio seating and a few flights of magical concoctions. We ordered a Farmer Salad and the pesto-based “Go Ask Alice” pizza from Pizza 44 next door. They texted us when our food was ready, and we hopped over to pick it up in under 30 seconds.

The outdoor patio at Queen City Brewery in Burlington Vermont.

Did we have favorites? Absolutely!

At home in Bennington, I can pick up a six-pack of Yorkshire Porter at the grocery store, and it’s my favorite cool-weather brew. On a sweltering summer evening, I ordered a flight of low-alcohol beers and then a Hefeweizen, which was one of the best I’ve ever tasted!

Eric continues to talk about all the Queen City beers he fell in love with, as well as the ones he didn’t get a chance to try.

Our Queen City experience was one of our favorites to date, and we are already making plans to head back to Burlington with coolers full of ice.

Switchback Brewing Company: Best Brewery for Cool Special Events

Address: 160 Flynn Avenue, Burlington, VT (Right around the corner from Burlington Beer Company) Dogs: Yes, outside Outdoor seating: Yes Reservations: No Hours: Wednesday-Sunday, 12-9 pm

A couple sits on a dog-friendly patio at Switchback Brewing in Burlington Vermont.

Switchback Brewing was founded in 2002 with a no-nonsense approach to creating delicious, drinkable beers.

Their flagship beer, Switchback Ale, has been a staple at pubs and package stores around Vermont for many years. Switchback Ale is unfiltered and packaged in stout bottles, perfect for parties, barbecues, and late-night TV sessions.

The Switchback taproom opened in 2014 and is known as one of the best breweries in Burlington, VT, for fun beer-themed events like Stretch-and-Sip Yoga, cribbage tournaments (beer and cribbage is a great combo!), dog PAWties, and live music.

A brand new beer garden and taproom opened in 2024 with more seating and an expanded menu.

Eric and I both enjoyed the extra pale ale on another one of those steamy Burlington evenings.

Foam Brewers: A Fun Waterfront Brewery with Late Weekend Hours

Address: 112 Lake Street, Burlington, VT Dogs: Yes, outside Outdoor seating: Yes Reservations: No Hours: Monday – Thursday, 12 – 10 pm; Friday, 12 pm – 12 am; Saturday, 10 am – 12 am; Sunday, 10 am – 10 pm.

Patrons sit at the bar at Foam Brewers in Burlington Vermont.

Foam Brewers is a small craft brewery on the Burlington waterfront, with another location called The Annex in Hinesburg. With its funky bar-like atmosphere, great outdoor seating, and a stellar selection of delicious IPAs, Foam Brewers caters to the younger, beer-loving generation, but we had no trouble keeping up!

Menu items are displayed on bright screens around a busy bar. Order 8 or 12-ounce pours or fill a growler to take home for later. You can also choose from a small selection of munchies (charcuterie, chips and salsa, olives, and the like).

Chips and salsa and beer at Foam Brewers in Burlington Vermont.

During our recent visit to Foam Brewers, I went with a small pour of “Together or Alone,” which was fruity and hoppy—exactly how I imagine a Burlington beer when I’m not in Burlington. Eric had the lager (In Another Life), and we both came away happily hopped and ready to explore the town.

Foam recently renovated and reopened Deep City Restaurant , which is attached to the original brewery on Lake Street. This is an ideal spot to grab brunch on the weekends (Friday to Monday, 8 am – 2 pm) — with ample outdoor seating and a fantastic menu of iconic favorites carried over from the beloved Penny Cluse Cafe, which closed in 2022.

Vermont Pub and Brewery: The Original Downtown Brew Pub

Address: 144 College Street, Burlington, VT Dogs: Yes, outside Outdoor seating: Yes Reservations: Yes Hours: Sunday – Thursday, 11:30 am – 9 pm, Friday & Saturday, 11:30 am – 10 pm

The Vermont Pub and Brewery has been a fixture in downtown Burlington since 1988, and I’ll admit that visiting still makes me sentimental about the crazy days of my youth, when I would start the night here with friends and a Burly Irish Ale (or two).

I spent a good portion of my 21st birthday here, and am delighted that the beer is still flowing freely and the pub food is still a delight.

The Vermont Pub and Brewery in Burlington, Vermont

While my favorite Burly Irish Ale is no longer on the menu, or at least it wasn’t during our visit, I was excited to try a Fancy Maple Pants Ale. This delicious amber ale is brewed with maple syrup from Stonyhill Sugar House in Fletcher.

Pubs are not often vegetarian-friendly, but I love the black bean burger here — served with brew fries or a wholesome salad.

The Vermont Pub and Brewery has a great dog-friendly patio and live music and Wednesday and Thursday evenings, plus Sunday afternoons. If you’re looking for fun beer offerings and casual comfort food within walking distance of downtown, this is your spot.

Tour guide was knowledgeable and fun. It was a good value. The ride was comfortable. It was a prefect amount of time.

Nick rocked it today for our group! Great stories. Comical and educational. Took good care of everyone. Thanks Nick! Nice to meet you

Tour was great. Did first republic, good water and zero gravity. Beers were delicious, learned a lot about the brewing process and our tour guide Matt H was a blast!

We took the brew tour in Burlington last Sunday and we had a great time! Ours was a bit of an unorthodox tour, as the tour bus had some issues that day (happens). City tours called us and warned us of the problem and delay which was fine, as we were being picked up at our hotel. They resolved the problem quickly and our guide was there and ready to go within 15 minutes of the originally scheduled time. Our guide Lauren was fantastic! She handled the mishap with grace and without skipping a beat. City tours had to have Ubers take us from brewery to brewery which worked out perfectly fine in the end. On to the tour itself, we were a smaller group, which I loved! We stopped at 4 locations and we sampled A LOT of beer. (I don't understand the reviews saying you barely get 3 drinks because by the end of it my husband and I could barely drink the last beers) We got behind the scenes tours at 2 of the breweries. Goodwater was my personal favorite. Lauren gave us a phenomenal history lesson along the way, which I fully nerded out to. All in all, it was a really fun experience that both, my husband and I, would recommend trying!

Photo of Jordan W.

Our guide Mikayla was lovely. They advertised a snack which we didn't get. It was a $99 tour scheduled from 5:45 to 9:15 but without dinner. It was a lot of drinking without any food which was odd. They take you to very small, remote breweries outside of Burlington. The breweries were fine but nothing special. At 2/3 spots you can't select your own beers. No beer blew us away. And we didn't get to try any of the big name breweries on our list. Overpriced for the experience.

My group made a wonderful decision to hop onto this brew tour. It's highly professional, entertaining, convenient and fun. After experiencing it I would I would argue this tour is the best way to experience all of Burlingtons brewery scene. For some background me and my group where doing a roudtrip from Portland Maine to Burlington Vermont for 2 days. We only really had one day in Burlington itself and originally planned to see the market center and some breweries when we looked up this tour group and decided to try it out. One of the nice things about this tour is convenience. The tour stops at 3 different breweries with one of them always being Magic Hat (which I also recommend going to.) You don't have to map out or try to park at all these locations. Further, this tour arranges your lunch with a nice local restaurant. You don't have to search for any places in a more sparse part of the city. Additionally our brew tour guide himself was fantastic. He is a local himself and is a erudite regarding beer and Burlington. While driving he will additional give you a tour of the city, letting you know about his landmarks, its history and its controversies. For beer he is very competent and knowledgeable about the history of beer and the history of the breweries we attended. He was very likable and when one of our group told him she didn't like beer he tried to accommodate her for her tastes. The only reason you might not choose to take this tour, I would imagine, is if you specifically want to attend a single brewery or two. My group wanted to really attend two specific breweries, Magic Hat and Switchback... Magic Hat is always part of the tour and lucky for us Switchback was included in their rotational breweries! We may not have been so lucky though and would had to go to Switchback separately from this tour. With the fantastic tour guide and its great convenience I think you get a lot of your ticket price for this tour group. I highly recommend this group.

Hi Cory, Great pictures! Thank you for such a thoughtful review; I'm really happy to hear that you enjoyed our tour! I hope we see you again sometime in Boston, NYC, or one of our other 6 cities. Cheers!!

City Brew Tours did a fantastic job of coordinating the event with excellent customer service. They were quick to respond! Emily and Aj were super helpful puting this together. We went with a group of 8 guys for a bachelor party in Stowe, VT. The private brewery tour was full of excitement, knowledge and entertainment. Our "beer guide" Frank did an amazing tour and knows a ton about beer! He's a fun and outgoing guy - we couldn't have asked for anyone else. We highly recommend him and the company. We'll be back for you for round 2 - City Brew tours! Sam

Awesome interior private bus! Great did a group of people or a party.

Hi Sam, thank you so much for your wonderful review! I'm glad you had such a fun and informative bachelor party with Frank at the helm. We hope to enjoy a beer with you again soon! Cheers!

Keanna is an absolute delight. She cured my lifelong affliction with depression using nothing but alcohol and good conversation. I am of the opinion that she should be promoted to the highest orders of the organization and given all the stock options and beers that you offer. My fellows groomsmen and I were pansies and couldn't finish their beers. But I was a friggin champ and took one of the team. We had 12 beers over the course and had the entire van to ourselves. Best bachelor's party I ever been on. After going on city brew tours, I am now better looking, healthier, and financially successful. Thanks city brew tours! Looking forward to getting hammered with you in every city I visit!

Sep 17, 2021

Thanks, Kenny! Your recommendation for Kianna's promotion has been duly (and most seriously) noted. It seems like we can mark this tour / bachelor party down as a success, especially if you've come out on the other end healthier and better looking. Glad to hear you enjoyed the beer samples and the brew tour, and maybe we'll see you for another bachelor party celebration in the future.

I cannot recommend Burlington Brew Tours enough. Our friends has recommended it to us and we thought it was a great Saturday night activity. It is well worth the $90 per person!! You get 15-16 beer samples which are pretty much a 4 oz pour and dinner from this amazing pizza place. Our tour guide Soren and the 2nd tour guide who was shadowing Soren, were both amazing. Soren was so friendly, knowledgeable, personable and made we sure were all happy with the beer. Having a great tour guide definitely made the tour even better. We made some friends along our tour and it was really really fun. I love that they bring you place to place and you get to try beers and if you want have additional. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a great activity. I would do this again even going to the same breweries- that's how fun it was. Thanks for having us and for the great brew tour!!

Another wonderful review and vote for Kianna! She was exceptional, and by the end of our tour we wanted her to join our bachelorette party! All around it was a great tour guided by an even greater tour guide. Us FL girls really enjoyed our trip and this particular day was the highlight of it.

Nestled into a curve of Lake Champlain, Vermont’s largest city is home to award-winning restaurants, a lively arts scene, and one of the loveliest urban bike trails in New England. But when it comes to breweries, Burlington, VT, is a bona fide craft beer mecca. Whether you love the hoppy bite of an IPA or the creamy, roasted flavors of a stout, these Burlington-area spots make a convincing case that they’re among the best breweries in New England.

Best Breweries in Burlington, Vermont

Burlington beer co..

Tapped in 2016 as one of America’s best new breweries by Thrillist, Burlington Beer Co. is the brainchild of Joe Lemnah, a native son who brought his talents home after working at Olde Saratoga, Dogfish Head, and Evolution. Located in the Burlington suburb of Williston, the brewery showcases Lemnah’s creativity (this is the man who once home-brewed a pumpkin beer inside a pumpkin) with rotating beers that emphasize local, seasonal ingredients. Two delicious examples include Barista, a coffee porter made with beans from Burlington roaster Uncommon Ground, and Beekeeper, an imperial IPA brewed with Vermont honey. 180 Flynn Ave., Williston, VT. 802-863-2337; burlingtonbeercompany.com

Foam Brewers

Foam Brewers

Located in a historic brick building just steps from Waterfront Park and the Burlington Bike Trail, and serving snacks of local cheeses, meats, and breads, Foam brings together all the best things to do in Burlington, VT (namely: play, eat, and drink). Opened in 2016 by a trio of brewers already steeped in expertise from stints at Magic Hat and Switchback, Foam offers a collection of seasonally rotating brews; the saisons and IPAs are especially worth checking out. Foam is also the only spot pouring the innovative aged and blended beers from the nearby House of Fermentology, a blendery cofounded by Foam partner Todd Haire. 112 Lake St., Burlington, VT. 802-399-2511; foambrewers.com

Zero Gravity

Zero Gravity

Proving you can never have too much of a good thing, Zero Gravity expanded beyond its home at the American Flatbread Burlington Hearth restaurant to set up an honest-to-goodness 30-barrel brew house on Pine Street in 2015. Even as brewing continues at the restaurant (located at 115 St. Paul St.), Zero Gravity offers a terrific beer-centric experience at its tasting room and beer garden. Under the guidance of brewmaster Paul Sayler, the brewery turns out quaffs that honor the qualities of classic beer styles — Belgian tripel, Czech pilsner, India pale ale, etc. — while still making room for only-in-Vermont creativity. One to try: the Sim City Extra IPA, which packs a real citrusy-hoppy punch. 716 Pine St., Burlington, VT. 802-497-0054; zerogravitybeer.com

Switchback Brewing Co.

In a state known for its progressive bent, Switchback is a brewery worth toasting: In early 2017, owner and brewmaster Bill Cherry made his company the first 100 percent employee-owned brewery in Vermont. Founded in 2002 as one of Burlington’s craft brew pioneers, Switchback doesn’t have an endlessly changing menu of experimental beers; instead, it focuses on a select lineup of two year-round brews (Switchback Ale, Karsten Premium Lager, and Zaboo Hazy IPA) and a handful of rotating specialties and limited runs. Visitors to the brewery will also love the Saturday tours and special events like live music and Stretch & Sip yoga classes. 160 Flynn Ave., Burlington, VT. 802-651-4114; switchbackvt.com

5 Favorite Breweries | Burlington, VT Four Quarters Brewing

Four Quarters Brewing

Located about a few miles northeast of downtown Burlington in the suburb of Winooski, Four Quarters is truly a labor of love. The small-batch specialist was opened in 2014 by beer geek Brian Eckert while he was also holding down a full-time job as a web developer at Ben & Jerry’s. The brewery’s reputation has grown steadily ever since, with the Food & Wine website FWx calling it “one of the best little breweries you’ve never heard of” in 2015. At the tiny tasting room — a wooden bar next to the brewing setup — you can sample Eckert’s imaginative concoctions, which include the much-buzzed-about tart saison Fleur de Lis and a Belgian patersbier called Opus Dei. 70 Main St., Winooski, VT. 802-391-9120; fourquartersbrewing.com

Switchback Brewery is one of Burlington’s oldest and finest breweries. Despite being one of the more popular (and crowded) breweries in Burlington Vermont, it is still worth visiting!

This Burlington brewery in the Old North End is close to various businesses, including shops, restaurants, and other establishments.

Bill Cherry, a master brewer, and Jeff Neiblum, a longtime acquaintance, founded Switchback Brewing Company in 2002. The vision was to concentrate limited resources on making beers of the highest possible quality.

The most renowned beers produced by Switchback Brewery are unfiltered and naturally carbonated .

With floor-to-ceiling windows and wood paneling , the building’s design also conveys a sense of warmth. It’s really gorgeous inside and is an awesome place to hang out!

Citr-Pils is a traditional Kellerbier or pilsener lager brewed with a combination of Citra and Saaz hops. The hops add a citrusy aroma, pilsner and IPA sensibilities, and a crisp flavor. It is a clean and refreshing beverage with a base of Light Pils that accentuates the lemony citrus notes.

So why is Switchback so popular? It is nearly impossible not to enjoy their beer, mainly because they offer three different year-round brews and six rotating seasonals. They are also known for their delicious food, including smoked paprika bratwurst served with sauerkraut, caramelized onions, and cheddar cheese curds on the side!

If you can only visit one of the top Burlington VT breweries, we definitely recommend Switchback.

What should I wear in Burlington?

Burlington, Vermont, has a relaxed and casual vibe, so you’ll want to dress comfortably while also being prepared for the varying weather conditions throughout the year. Here’s a general guide on what to wear to fit in and stay comfortable:

Spring and Summer (May to September):

  • Casual Attire: Jeans, shorts, skirts, and dresses are all common choices. Opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics as temperatures can vary.
  • Layering: Since weather can change quickly, bring along light layers like a cardigan, light jacket, or a flannel shirt.
  • Comfortable Footwear: Sneakers, sandals, or casual walking shoes are perfect for exploring the city and its outdoor attractions.
  • Sunglasses and Sunscreen: Protect yourself from the sun while enjoying outdoor activities by wearing sunglasses, a hat, and applying sunscreen.

Fall (October to November):

  • Sweaters and Flannels: Embrace the cozy fall vibes with sweaters, flannel shirts, and long-sleeve tops.
  • Jeans or Corduroys: Stick to comfortable bottoms like jeans or corduroy pants.
  • Closed-toe Shoes: As temperatures cool down, consider wearing closed-toe shoes or stylish ankle boots.
  • Light Jacket or Coat: A light jacket, trench coat, or fleece layer will help you stay warm during brisk fall days.

Winter (December to February):

  • Warm Layers: Bundle up with sweaters, thermal tops, and turtlenecks to stay warm.
  • Winter Coat: A heavy winter coat or parka is a must to combat the cold.
  • Insulated Boots: Waterproof and insulated boots will keep your feet warm and dry in snowy conditions.
  • Accessories: Don’t forget gloves, a scarf, and a hat to protect yourself from the cold winds and snow.

Remember that Vermonters value comfort and practicality, so you’ll likely fit in just fine by embracing a relaxed and layered approach to your clothing choices. It’s also a good idea to check the weather forecast before your trip to ensure you’re adequately prepared for the conditions during your visit.

Generally, people dress super casual at breweries in Burlington (and just about everywhere) so you don’t need to bring anything fancy.

These breweries in Burlington Vermont are among the best, including well-known and lesser-known beers worldwide.

First, it is essential to note that all Burlington breweries produce seasonal specialty beers. Since each brewery’s specialty distinguishes it and makes it worth seeking out when available, it is always worthwhile.

Now that you’re familiar with the best Vermont breweries, you’re well on your way to drinking your way through Vermont. If you cannot visit all of these breweries in one trip, stop by a local beer store and purchase some. Many Vermont breweries prefer to remain in-state, and some of their beers can be difficult to find outside the state.

So when you visit the beautiful state of Vermont, be sure to try some of them out.

Superior Tour

"We were on this tour for my birthday celebration. Not only was the entire tour teriffic, but the tour guide, Matt, was also amazing. Not only did he escort us safely to each stop but he provided a detailed narration of not just breweries, but the entire area. Matt made our first time to Burlington and our first tour of this nature a tremendous experience Not only will we visit Burlington again, but we will certainly include this tour."

Visit local breweries and leave the driving to them.

"This was such a great time, I can't stop telling all my friends about it. They picked us up in downtown Burlington, picked up a couple more people and we were off. Matt, the tour guide, was so informative and answered any questions that we may have had. My husband and I are thinking of booking again in the fall of 2017, that's how much fun we had. This is a must do if you like to try different beers; and they are all made local in the Burlington, VT area."

I Like Beer

"We booked this tour last minute and it was great from start to finish. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the area, not just about local breweries and the making of beer, but also the history of the town and the best places to visit. We visited three different breweries, Switchback, Magic Hat and Goodwater - and had a delicious lunch at Barnyard Pizza. I would highly recommend this tour if you have a half day to spare!"
