Get the best Australian dollar exchange rate

Compare the latest Australian dollar exchange rates from the UK's best currency providers

Best Australian dollar exchange rate

While it's not considered to be a major world currency like euros or US dollars, the Australian dollar is still widely traded on the global financial markets especially in commodities like minerals and metals where Australia is a major exporter. Australia's economy is considered to be very stable and you'll find that dollars are widely stocked and available in all reputable bureau de change here in the UK.

If you're travelling to Australia, it's important to shop around and compare currency suppliers to maximise your chances of getting a good deal. We can help you to find the best Australian dollar exchange rate by comparing a wide range of UK travel money suppliers who have Australian dollars in stock and ready to order online now. Our comparisons automatically factor in all costs and commission, so all you need to do is tell us how much you want to spend and we'll show you the top suppliers who fit the bill.

Compare before you buy

Some of the best travel money deals are only available when you buy online. By using a comparison site, you're more likely to see the full range of deals on offer and get the best rate.

Order online

Always place your order online, even if you plan to collect your currency in person. Most supermarkets and high street currency suppliers offer better exchange rates if you order online beforehand.

Combine orders

If you're travelling with others, consider placing one large currency order instead of buying individually. Many currency suppliers offer enhanced rates that improve as you order more.

The best Australian dollar exchange rate right now is 1.8809 from Currency Online Group . This is based on a comparison of 16 currency suppliers and assumes you were buying £750 worth of Australian dollars for home delivery.

The best Australian dollar exchange rates are usually offered by online travel money companies who have lower operating costs than traditional 'bricks and mortar' stores, and can therefore offer better currency deals than their high street counterparts.

For supermarkets and companies who sell travel money online and on the high street, it's generally cheaper to place your order online and collect it from the store rather than turning up out of the blue and ordering over the counter. Many stores set their 'walk-in' exchange rates lower than their online rates because they can. By ordering online you're guaranteed to get the online rate and you can collect your order from the store as usual.

Australian dollar rate trend

Over the past 30 days, the Australian dollar rate is up 0.52% from 1.8809 on 28 May to 1.8907 today. This means one pound will buy more Australian dollars today than it would have a month ago. Right now, £750 is worth approximately $1,418.03 which is $7.35 more than you'd have got on 28 May.

These are the average Australian dollar rates taken from our panel of UK travel money providers at the end of each day. You can explore this further on our British pound to Australian dollar currency chart .

Timing is key if you want to maximise your Australian dollars, but the best time to buy will depend on the current market conditions and your personal travel plans.

If you have a fixed travel date, you should start to monitor the Australian dollar rates as soon as possible in the period leading up to your departure so that you've got time to buy when the rate is looking favourable. For example, if the Australian dollar rate has been steadily increasing over several weeks or months, it could be a good time to buy while the rate is high.

Some people prefer to buy half of their Australian dollars as soon as they've booked their holiday, and the remaining half just before they depart. This can be a good way of maximising your holiday money if the exchange rate continues to rise after you've bought, but will also help to minimise your losses if the rate drops.

You could also consider signing up to our newsletter and we'll email the latest rates to you each month.

If you need your Australian dollars sooner and don't have time to wait for the rates to improve, you can still save money by comparing rates from a range of different providers before you buy. Online travel money suppliers usually have better Australian dollar rates than high street exchanges, but supermarkets are a good compromise if you want to collect your currency in person and still get a decent rate. Just remember to buy or reserve your Australian dollars first before you collect them from the store so you benefit from the supplier's better online rate.

Australian dollar banknotes and coins

One Australian dollar ($) can be subdivded into 100 cents (c).

There are five denominations of Australian dollar banknotes in circulation: $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100; and six coin denominations: 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 and $2.

As you'd expect, the Aussies have a plethora of nicknames for their currency. Most of the names refer to the bright colours of the banknotes; the pink 5-dollar note for example has at least 14 nicknames including 'fairy floss', 'pink snapper', 'prawn', 'piget' and 'rasher'.

In 2016, over 70,000 people signed a petition to officially rename the country's currency to 'dollarydoos' after the term was used in an iconic episode of The Simpsons. Sadly, the Reserve Bank of Australia declined the change, but you may still hear it used informally in conversations.

There's no evidence to suggest that you'll get a better deal if you buy your Australian dollars in Australia. While there may be better exchange rates available in some locations, your options for shopping around may be limited once you arrive, and there's no guarantee the exchange rates will be any better than they are in the UK.

Exchange rates aside, here are some other reasons to avoid buying your Australian dollars in Australia:

  • You may have to pay commission or other hidden fees to a currency exchange that you wouldn't have paid in the UK
  • Your bank may charge you a foreign transaction fee if you use it to buy Australian dollars when you're abroad
  • It can be harder to spot scammers and fraudulent currency exchanges in Australia

Lastly, it can be handy to have some cash on you when you arrive at your destination so you can pay for any immediate expenses like food, transport and tips. You don't want to be searching for the nearest currency exchange when you've just landed and you're desperate for a cup of tea - or a cocktail!

Tips for saving money while visiting Australia

Australia is generally considered to be an expensive holiday destination for British travellers due to the country's distance from the UK and the overall cost of living in Australia. Unsurprisingly, Sydney and Melbourne are ranked among the most expensive cities to visit, while Adelaide, Perth and Cairns can be more budget-friendly alternatives.

  • Research your accommodation: Branded hotels and resorts will always be more expensive than budget hotels and guest houses, especially in big cities and tourist hotspots. In rural areas, farm stays provide a unique opportunity to experience life on a working farm at a fraction of the cost of staying in a hotel. Or, if you're travelling on a shoestring, you'll find plenty of campgrounds and backpacker lodges dotted across the country which offer an inexpensive place to stay.
  • Use public transport: Busses and trams offer affordable travel around built-up areas, and ferries are part of the public transport system in waterfront cities such as Sydney, Brisbane and Perth. Train fares can be expensive if you're travelling long distances, but light rail options are available at more affordable prices, particularly on specific routes like the Gold Coast Light Rail in Queensland.
  • Plan your itinerary: There's no shortage of free attractions and activities in Australia. From Bondi Beach in Syndney to Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast; Australia is famous for its stunning beaches, all of which are free to use and enjoy. Or, if sunbathing isn't your thing, you can explore Australia's pristine natural landscapes and diverse wildlife at any of Australia's national parks and botanical gardens. Popular options include the Royal National Park in New South Wales, Daintree Rainforest in Queensland and Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney. In larger cities like Sydney and Melbourne, look out for free walking tours guided by local volunteers who share insights about the city's history, culture, and landmarks.
  • Find discount vouchers: Many tourist attractions and activities offer discount vouchers and codes that can save you money on entry fees and other perks. Look for vouchers online; sign up to newsletters and follow the social media accounts of places you're planning to visit.
  • Eat like a local: Cafes and bakeries offer reasonably-priced breakfast and lunch options such sandwiches and pastries if you're looking for a quick inexpensive meal. Many cafes and restaurants also offer lunchtime specials during the week where you can grab a discounted meal which usually includes a drink. Asian restaurants and takeout places, especially those serving Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese can be budget-friendly options for an evening meal. Look for local, family-owned establishments for authentic flavors at lower prices, and "BYO" restaurants which allow you to bring your own alcohol to save money on dining out.
  • Take cash: Using cash will help you to stick to a budget more easily than paying by card, and you'll also avoid foreign transaction fees. If you do take a card with you, look out for ATMs that are affiliated with your UK bank to avoid ATM fees, and if you're asked whether you want to pay in pounds or Australian dollars - always choose Australian dollars. If you pay in pounds the merchant can set their own exchange rate which won't be in your favour.

Choosing the right payment method

Sending money to a company you might not have heard of before can be unsettling. We routinely check all the companies that feature in our comparisons to make sure they meet our strict listing criteria, but it's still worth knowing how your money is protected in the unlikely event a company goes bust and you don't receive your order.

Bank transfer

Your money is not protected if you pay by bank transfer. If the company goes bust and you've paid by bank transfer, it's unlikely you'll get your money back. For this reason, we recommend you pay by debit or credit card wherever possible because they offer more financial protection.

Debit cards are the most popular payment method and they offer some financial protection. If you pay by debit card and the company goes bust, you can instruct your bank to make a chargeback request to recover your money from the company's bank. This isn't a legal right, and a refund isn't guaranteed, but if you make a chargeback request your bank is obliged to try and recover your money.

Credit card

Credit cards offer full financial protection, and your money is protected by law under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. Section 75 states that your card issuer must refund you in full if you don't receive your order. Be aware that many credit cards charge a cash advance fee (typically around 3%) for buying currency, so you may have to weigh up the benefits of full financial protection with the extra cost of using a credit card.

Currency Jargon Explained

Foreign exchange can be confusing, so to help break through the confusion, here are some common terms associated with currency:

Sell rate   – This is the rate at which we sell foreign currency in exchange for local currency. For example, if you were heading to Europe, you would exchange British Pounds for Euros at the sell rate.   Buy rate   – This is the rate at which we buy foreign currency back from you into your local currency. For example, if you were returning from America, we would exchange your US Dollars back into British Pounds at the buy rate of the day.   Holiday money rate or tourist rate   – This is another term for a sell rate.   Spot rate   – This is known more formally as the ‘interbank’ rate. It is the rate banks or large financial institutions charge each other when trading significant amounts of foreign currency. In the business, this is sometimes referred to as a ‘spot rate’.   Spread   – This is the difference between the buy and sell rates offered by a foreign exchange provider such as us.   Cross rate   – This is the rate we give to customers who want to exchange currencies that do not involve the local currency. For example, if you want to exchange Australian Dollars into US Dollars .   Commission   – This is a common fee that foreign exchange providers charge for exchanging one currency with another.

The exchange rates of the world’s currencies constantly move up and down against each other based on supply and demand. The more in demand a currency is, the higher its price will be. Changes in the foreign exchange market can be caused by this supply and demand, as well as by political and economic events.

There are a lot of foreign currency providers in Australia, mainly high-street banks, all offering you a range of products and services. You can spend a lot of time to trying to find the best exchange rate in the market. But there’s usually very little difference between rates offered – sometimes it can be a matter of cents.

The market (or spot) exchange rate is the rate banks exchange currencies at. A lot of extra processes and people go into providing you with currency. The cost of these is reflected in the price of the currency. At Travelex, we work hard to give you great value for your foreign currency. We’re constantly striving to do things more efficiently, so that because we want you to get the best possible deal we can offer.

Currencies constantly move up and down against each other as financial markets change. These movements can be caused by supply and demand, as well as by political and economic events.

Exchange rates are influenced by banks and trading institutions and the volume of currency they are buying and selling at any given time. Currencies are traded (bought and sold) daily around the world. One currency can be purchased by another currency through banking institutions or on the open market. The volumes of currencies traded are increased and decreased depending on the attractiveness of any particular currency, which depends on a multitude of factors such as political stability, economic strength, government debt and fiscal policy among others. Government central banks also have the ability to set a currency at a constant price through a method called pegging, which essentially tethers the value of one currency to another. The value (or price) of a currency is determined by its traded volume. If a currency is competitively priced, traders will buy the currency, essentially driving up its value. If a currency is not competitively priced, traders may avoid buying, or even sell it, essentially driving down its value.

Rest assured, we're doing everything we can to make this as simple and easy as we can. However, if you have any questions , we're always here to help. You can call us 24/7 on 1800 440 039 in Australia.

*Rates are subject to change throughout the day. In-store rates vary compared to online.

Currency and shopping in Australia

Hosier Lane, Melbourne, VIC © Tourism Australia

Hosier Lane, Melbourne, Victoria © Tourism Australia

Australia’s national currency is Australian dollars (AUD), which comes in denominations of $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 notes. Coins come in 5, 10, 20 and 50 cent and one and two dollar denominations.

Currency exchange is available at banks, hotels and international airports. Australian banks offer the same range of services typical in other western nations, and Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) are widespread, although facilities may be limited in remote towns and the outback. EFTPOS (our electronic payment system) is widely available in most Australian shops, restaurants and hotels, allowing you to pay for purchases with your credit or debit card. Fees may be charged on transactions, particularly if withdrawing from an international account, so it is advised you check with your bank before travelling.

XE Currency Converter  will help you convert your own currency at the market exchange rates.

Australia’s four largest banks are: NAB (National Australia Bank), ANZ (Australia New Zealand Bank), Commonwealth Bank of Australia and Westpac Banking Corporation. There are many smaller banks too, including ING Direct, AMP Banking and HSBC Australia. Banking hours are usually 9.30am-4pm Monday to Thursday and until 5pm on Friday, but it’s best to check with each branch directly. Some branches open on Saturday mornings until 1pm.

Credit cards such as American Express, Bankcard, Diners Club, MasterCard, Visa, UnionPay and JCB are accepted in Australia. VISA or MasterCard can be used everywhere credit cards are accepted. American Express and Diners Club are accepted at major supermarkets, department store chains and tourist destinations. A good tip is to carry multiple credit cards and a little cash. Merchants may impose credit card surcharges in some places.

Traveller's cheques are not widely accepted in Australia. If you do purchase traveller’s cheques, it is best to buy them in Australian dollars as smaller shops, restaurants and other businesses are unlikely to know what the exchange rate is if you present a cheque in a different currency such as US dollars or British pounds.

Australia has a Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 10 per cent. You may be able to claim a refund for the GST paid on goods if you have spent AUD$300 or more with a single business, no more than 60 days before departing Australia.  Tourist Refund Scheme  facilities are located in the departure area of international terminals.

It is not customary to bargain or haggle in Australia.

Hotels and restaurants do not add service charges to your bill, and tipping is always your choice. In upmarket restaurants, it is common to tip waiters 10 per cent of the bill for good service.

Safety in Australia

Burleigh Beach, Gold Coast, QLD © Tourism and Events Queensland

Burleigh Beach, Gold Coast, Queensland © Tourism and Events Queensland

The emergency number for police, ambulance and fire brigade is 000.

Australia’s popular beaches are usually patrolled by lifeguards from October to April. Red and yellow flags mark the safest areas for swimming and it is always recommended to swim within these monitored areas.

There are also many lakes, waterholes and rivers that are popular swimming spots in Australia. Pay attention to signs at the entrance that will advise if swimming is safe, or check with the local government website before visiting.

For information about marine stingers and crocodile safety in Far North Queensland, visit the  Queensland Government  website.

The sun is extremely strong in Australia, so it’s important to protect your skin during the day. This is especially true while travelling, as you’ll generally be spending lots of time in our beautiful great outdoors. It is recommended that you use SPF 50+ sunscreen, and wear a hat, sunglasses, and long sleeves where possible to protect your skin against the sun’s harmful UV rays. For more information and handy tips, visit the  SunSmart  website.

The tap water is generally safe to drink throughout Australia. Travelling with a reusable water bottle is recommended so you can refill it throughout the day and stay hydrated. There are public taps and bubblers (drinking fountains) available throughout major cities, and most cafés, restaurants or hotels will be happy to fill your bottle at your request. If the tap water is not safe to drink (this is typically only the case in rural areas), there will be a sign above the tap advising so.

Post offices are usually open 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday, with some city post offices open on Saturday morning. Travellers can arrange to collect mail at post offices throughout Australia.

If you have a disability and are planning to travel throughout Australia, there are many services to meet your needs. Thorough preparation is essential for a successful trip, so you should speak to your travel agent about your specific requirements. How far will my Australian dollars go?

From country-hopping backpackers to long-haul holidaymakers and honeymooners, more and more UK travellers are keen to enjoy Australia’s wide, open spaces, world-class surf, vibrant cultural scene and unique wildlife. How far your holiday money will go depends on what you want to see and do.

On a mid-range budget, it’s possible to stay in comfortable hotels and dine in local restaurants for between A$100 and A$200 per day, depending on the part of the country you’re visiting. For those who want to splash out, Sydney and Melbourne rank as two of the world’s most expensive cities.

By avoiding the tourist hotspots and heading off the beaten track to Australia’s smaller towns you can enjoy Oz’s famous laid-back culture for significantly less. Travelling out of season will also make your money go further. Expect to spend more between October and February, the southern hemisphere’s summer months.

You won’t find a service charge added to hotel and restaurant bills so it’s up to you if you tip – 10 per cent is pretty standard for good service.

The Australian government adds a 10 per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST) to almost all purchases. Visitors are entitled to a GST refund on any purchase of A$300 or more, no more than 30 days before they leave the country, which could save you a few extra dollars. The scheme doesn’t apply to all goods and you must be able to wear those that do qualify or carry them as hand luggage onto the plane.

We’ve got lots more information on  travelling to Australia  including why to get  travel insurance .

Some common questions

What is the australian dollar.

The Australian dollar, or AUD (A$), is the official currency of Australia. Like the US dollar, it’s subdivided into cents, with 100 cents to the dollar – just like the 100 pence we have to the pound here in the UK.

The issuing authority for the Australian currency is the Reserve Bank of Australia. But you can order it for your trip from Post Office – online or in any of thousand of participating branches. Use our branch finder to find the one nearest you that offers this service.

Which countries and territories use the Australian dollar currency?

The Australian dollar is the sole currency of the Commonwealth of Australia, which includes Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Norfolk Island, and is also used in the independent Pacific Island states of Kiribati, Nauru and Tuvalu.

Where can you buy Australian dollars?

It’s easy to buy Australian dollars online using our click and collect service or in selected branches by finding your nearest travel money branch .

You can get our best exchange rates, and we can also deliver to your home , if you buy online. You’ll get a better rate the more you buy. And, if you buy at a good time for the pound, you can lock in that great rate.

One handy and secure way to buy holiday money is on a Travel Money Card . It’s a prepaid Mastercard that stores up to 23 currencies, including the Australian dollar.

What is the highest-value Australian dollar note?

The highest value Australian dollar banknote is the A$100 note. Other note values in Australia’s currency are 5, 10, 20 and 50. It was the first country to introduce ‘plastic’ banknotes made of a synthetic polymer.

What is the lowest Australian dollar currency denomination?

The lowest Australian currency denomination isn’t a dollar at all, but rather 5 cents. There are 100 cents to an Australian dollar, and 10, 20 and 50 cent coins are also in circulation.

2021 Australian Tourism Exchange

Media Release - 12th February 2021

Link Copied!

The 41 st edition of Australia’s largest tourism tradeshow, the Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE), is set to take place in Sydney in June this year, giving tourism operators around the country a chance meet and do business with travel wholesalers and agents from around Australia and the world.

The annual event, which is delivered by Tourism Australia, will involve a hybrid format that brings together in-person and virtual components to ensure the tourism industry can meet, exchange knowledge, and establish important business connections.

The in-person component of the tradeshow, ATE Live , will take place from 6 to 9 June 2021 at the ICC Sydney, enabling international buyers based in Australia or New Zealand, as well as domestic buyers and frontline travel sellers, to meet with Australian tourism operators.

A virtual version of the event, ATE Online, will follow from 10 to 17 June 2021 for all other international buyers who are unable to travel to Australia.

To provide assistance to the industry after enduring the most challenging year on record, Tourism Australia will be offering fully subsidised participation fees to the event along with three nights’ accommodation for sellers and buyers along with flights for buyers*.

Tourism Australia Managing Director Phillipa Harrison said that participation in ATE is more important than ever to support the industry’s recovery.

“After what has been such a challenging period for tourism, we’re thrilled to be able to bring so many of our friends and colleagues from across the industry together for this year’s ATE event,” Ms Harrison said.

“The tradeshow will provide an opportunity for operators to network and do business with wholesalers and agents from around the world, ensuring valuable links between Australian operators and the global distribution network continue especially while travel to Australia is on hold.”

ATE21 will involve a number of changes, including a revised layout with traditional seller booths being replaced by networking areas defined by each of the States and Territories, and appointments taking place throughout the trade show floor instead of seller booths. Priority will also be given to past attendees and sellers in bushfire affected areas.

ATE typically brings together around 600 travel wholesalers and agents (travel buyers) from more than 30 countries with 1,500 Australian tourism operators (sellers) for four days of face-to-face meetings, networking opportunities and educational famils in the host city. The most recent ATE event was held in Perth in 2019.

Applications for ATE21 will open on 17 February and close on 19 March.

More information on the event will be provided in the coming weeks and will be available at www.tourism.australia.com/ate21

*FOC accommodation and flights to be provided to delegates based outside of Sydney. Seller accommodation is limited to one seller delegate per organisation.

Post-pandemic boom as international tourists now spending the most since COVID

A photo of a Noosa beach in the Sunshine Coast

Australia is proving a winner with international travellers, with new data showing they are staying longer and often spending more than before the pandemic.

Tourism Research Australia has found the amount of money being spent by overseas travellers per night is slightly higher than pre-COVID in South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia.

New Zealand, China, the United Kingdom, Japan and the United States are the ones with the most citizens seeking an Australian holiday.

Queensland has grown into a favoured stop for visitors, with Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast recording the highest overnight spending rates ever.

Travellers spent $3.2 billion in Brisbane and $371.1 million on the Sunshine Coast.

Meanwhile foreign travellers to the Whitsundays, Southern Great Barrier Reef, Fraser Coast and Outback Queensland had tourists spending rates above 2019, before coronavirus arrived in Australia.

' They stay longer and spend more'

Peter Lynch, who operates whale watching tour company Blue Dolphin Marine at Queensland's Hervey Bay, said it was great to see international tourism coming back.

"We're seeing quite a few more North Americans coming through now," he said.

"And when we come into our witching season, it's the northern hemisphere summer, so lots of Europeans.

"The Hervey Bay and Queensland market does very well with tourists from the UK, Germany, Holland, France and Italy.

"We are definitely seeing an increase across all the tours in the region."

Tourism Minister Michael Healy said Queensland was the "top performer" for international visitor spending.

"Our international tourists, they stay longer and they spend more -- and they're the ones we really want ot focus on.

"We want to make sure that we're getting them here."

He said an increase in arrivals from South Korea and Canada had boosted numbers, but conceded "we are yet to see a full return of visitors from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, a challenge shared across Australia".

Victoria, Tasmania and the ACT all had more visitors spending more money compared to late last year, but fell short of the 2019 levels.

The Northern Territory was the only part of the country where spending went down since the previous survey.
