Åndalsnes itself is merely a village, but the valley and surrounding mountains and fjords are among the greatest in Norway.

Sightseeing:
Although situated in one of the most scenic regions in Norway, Andalsnes itself is rather plain. That's because the invading Nazis in 1940 bombed it out of existence. The king and his family used Andalsnes as their exit route in their dramatic escape from Norway, following the German invasion of their borders. The royals made it, but Andalsnes was destroyed. The town today is modern, and pleasant enough.
Tours Excursions Transportation:
There is a new cable car called Romsdalen Gondola right by the port to the top of the mountain including a restaurant at the top. There is a viewing platform.
Andalsnes is the starting point for one of the great motor drives in Norway: the Trollstigvegen, a 2-hour drive along Route 63 south to Geiranger. The highway climbs to 620m (2,034 ft.) over a distance of 8km (5 miles). The Orneveien or "Eagle's Road" down to Geiranger was a marvel of Norwegian engineering upon its completion in 1952.
Rauma Rail Line , one of the most spectacular train journeys of Norway The Rauma line passes right under the massive Trollwall. A fantastic train ride with slow driving and photo stops at the most spectacular sceneries. Guiding in several languages, comfortable modern trains with large windows, traveling over the old stone bridge “Kylling brua”, over the wild waterfalls and into the Stavem tunnel here the train makes an 180 degree turn inside the mountain and so to continue with an unforgettable view over the Romsdals valley. Note: If you decide to book the train on your own, do so well in advance. On occasion an extra train will be scheduled, check at the train station.
The train station and tourist office are right across the cruise dock.
Both Bjorli and Dombas have not much to offer in close vicinity, so you might as well buy tickets to Dombas, where the stop is about an hour. The ticket prices are all the same. Please note the 67+ travelers receive a 50 % discount. Dombas train station is quaint and has clean sanitary facilities and nice views.
As the weather in Norway can be very unpredictable, make sure to check the cancellation policies in case of inclement weather. It is no fun doing an excursion in the clouds.
It pays to compare your cruise line excursions : Tours etc. offered by GetYourGuide and by Viator .
Nearby Places:
- Vegmuseum, Trollstigen , is a little museum at the pass, with exhibitions relating the story of how this incredible road came to be.
- Another grand highlight of the area is en route to Dombås (Rte. 9). Both road and train lines follow the Troll Wall or Trollveggen, a major challenge for mountaineers, rising 1,800m (5,905 ft.). A combined Norwegian and British team "conquered" it in 1965.
- The visitor center distributes more than a dozen leaflets outlining the best hiking trails through the Romsdalen Alps, a string of mountains enveloping Åndalsnes. The most dramatic route -- and our all-time favorite -- is the full-day jaunt that begins 50m (164 ft.) north of Åndalsnes and climbs to the summit of Nesaksla Mountain, rising 715m (2,345 ft.) over Åndalsnes. At the top, you're rewarded with another one of those awesome panoramas. On a clear day, you can see down to the Romsdalsfjord. From here the climb continues to the summit of Høgnosa at 991m (3,251 ft.) and on to Åkesfjellet at 1,215m (3,986 ft.).
- The Romsdalsfjord is one of the most scenic in western Norway, cutting a deep gash into the earth and extending west of Åndalsnes. The tourist office (located in the train station) can arrange 4-hour fishing tours of the fjord at a cost of 250NOK ($36) per person. An annual local license can be obtained for180NOK ($25) from the tourist office.
Shopping and Food
The Norwegian currency is the Norwegian crown (Norske krone), abbreviated kr. A 1/100th krone is called øre. 1.00 EUR = about 9 NOK. Norway is one of the most expensive countries in the world!
ATMs in Norway are called Minibank.
Nearly all stores accept major credit cards such as Master card and Visa (Bring your passport/driver's license, as you are required to identify yourself when using a credit card).

Communication:
Norwegian is the official language of Norway. The language is very close and mutually intelligible with the two other Scandinavian languages, English widely spoken.
On the forward decks of your ship the free wifi of Andelsnes has good reception. At the train station, you can use their internet station for 10 minutes (free)
Opening Hours and Holidays:
Opening hours in Norway are better than they used to be but many smaller stores still close early on Saturday (1 PM or 3 PM is typical) and nearly everything is closed on Sundays. You'll often see opening hours written as "9-21 (9-18)" on doors, meaning 9 AM to 9 PM weekdays, 9 AM to 6 PM Saturday.

Getting To Know Åndalsnes – Cruise Port Guide
Port snapshot.
Located at the end of the Romsdalsfjord, the ninth longest in Norway, Åndalsnes is blessed with a wonderful setting, between the lofty mountain peaks and the waters of the fjord. This is a small town, and you don’t even really need a map to get around it. This destination is all about exploring the breath-taking scenery. Welcome to our Andalsnes cruise port guide.
Port Location and Facilities
The Tindekaia pier acts as the main cruise pier in Åndalsnes is located in the heart of the small town. There are no facilities at the port, but being within 400m of the centre is handy for all the amenities of town. Tourist information can be found in the train station building, only 150m from the pier and on the walking route into town. Here you can book independent trips using local taxi providers and tour operators, plus pick up maps and leaflets for local attractions and walking routes.
What not to miss
- Rauma Railway
The Raumabanen’s been described as one of the finest stretches of railway in Europe, having first opened in 1924 after 40 years of planning and is the best way to experience the beauty of the Rauma Valley. The train station is located next to the port at 4 metres above sea level and the line ends in Dombås, 659 metres above sea level, 100 kilometres away. Since the route started almost 100 years ago it has played an important role for the people of Åndalsnes and to a wider extent Norway, transporting the Bank of Norway’s gold reserves to safety during the Second World War and in recent times transporting all the cruise ship tourists through the Rauma valley. It has even become famous in the movies, having been featured in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince standing in for the Hogwart’s Express route using a veteran train belonging to the Norwegian Railway Club. The Rauma Railway is part of the Norwegian National Rail Service and tickets can be obtained at the railway station near to the port or online in advance via https://www.vy.no/en or https://entur.no/?lang=eng
Trollveggen
Meaning Troll Wall, this is one of the most impressive rock faces, and in fact the tallest vertical rock face in all of Europe. It rises up over 1,100 metres (3,600 ft) as part of the mountain massif Trolltindene, or Troll Peaks.
- Trollstigen
Also known as the Troll’s Path or Way of the Trolls, this mountainside road has 11 hair pin bends, winding over 700 metres (2,300 ft) high to a viewing plateau and is overlooked by mountains known as The King, The Queen and The Bishop. The Stigfossen waterfall falls 320 metres (1,050 ft) down the mountainside and can also be viewed from the viewing platforms at the rest stop area.
Rampestreken
There are a few hiking routes from the port, the most impressive being the hike up the Romsdalseggen to the Rampestreken viewpoint. It takes about 1 hour to 90 minutes to make the ascent up to the summit of Nesaksla, 715 metres above sea level. From here you have sweeping views of Åndalsnes, The Rauma Valley and the Romsdalsfjord. The start is fairly simple with organized walways to the Nebba viewpoint over the Rauma River, before it gets tougher on the Romsdalstrappa. This is a series of natural stone stairs built by Nepalese Sherpas that leads to a viewpoint called Rampestreken. This metal viewing platform is very impressive, jutting 6.5 metres out into thin air, 550 metres above sea level. An extra 20 minutes will bring you to the summit for more stunning views.

Why Åndalsnes?
“Then he told him about Åndalsnes, a tiny settlement up in Romsdalen valley, surrounded by high mountains which were so beautiful that his mother had always said that that was where God had started when he was creating the world, and that He had spent so long on Romsdalen that the rest of the world had to be done posthaste to be finished by Sunday.” – Jo Nesbø, The Bat.
At the end of beautiful Romsdalsfjord lies the small town of Åndalsnes, idyllically located in the valley of Romsdal by the mouth of the river Rauma. Åndalsnes is home to some of the highest mountains in Norway and many scenic attractions such as the Rauma Railway, Trollstigen road, mount Trollveggen and the Romsdalen Gondola ridge. Enjoy the lively emerald green river Rauma, lush waterfalls, steep mountains and magnificent bridges.
What to see & do in Åndalsnes
Highlights include the spectacular Trollstigen road, an exceptional driving experience up a series of narrow hairpin bends, providing a great view of the dramatic mountain peaks surrounding it. Once on top of the plateau, the restaurant and viewpoints show Norwegian architecture at its best, and the view from the top is a sight to behold.
Another well known attraction is Trollveggen, the highest vertical mountain in Northern Europe.
The Rauma Railway, built in 1924, is a must-see when visiting Åndalsnes. Lonely Planet named it “the most scenic train journey in Europe”.
Experience the Romsdalen Gondola, a shortcut to the fantastic fjord and mountain views of Romsdalen. Located right above the town of Åndalsnes, surrounded by the famous Romsdal mountains, is Mount Nesaksla (708 m.a.s.l.). A state-of-the-art electric cable car takes you 1,679 m from the fjord and up the mountainside.

The Norwegian port town of Åndalsnes is located at the end of the Isfjord, which branches off from the Romsdalsfjord. Traveling by ship through the Romsdalsfjord is wonderful. However, the place can also be reached by car or train. The Rauma Railway runs from Åndalsnes through the Romsdal inland to Dombås, where it meets the Oslo - Trondheim rail link.

Åndalsnes sights
The small town with around 2.200 inhabitants is surrounded by spectacular nature. It is surrounded by towering mountains and picturesque valleys. The Romsdal region is a paradise for climbers and mountain hikers in summer and a popular ski area in winter. The salmon-rich Rauma River, which flows into the Isfjord here, attracts anglers from all over the world. Europe's highest steep face, the approximately 1700 meter high Troll Wall, and the Trollstigen, a mountain road that winds in breathtaking serpentines to the top of the pass, are extremely worth seeing.
Andalsnes by the Isfjord
The Troll Wall lies in the Romsdal, a valley surrounded by imposing mountains. At around 1700 meters, it is Europe's highest steep face. The vertical part of the wall is almost 1000 meters high with an overhang of 50 meters. The Troll Wall was climbed for the first time in 1965. Today there are over ten routes that lead to the summit. The Troll Wall was a popular starting point for base jumpers for a long time. After a number of serious accidents, including fatalities, base jumping is prohibited.
There is a visitor center with a shop and cafeteria on the Troll Wall. A display board is nice, on which the height conditions are clearly shown by projecting the Eiffel Tower onto the rock wall as a comparison.
The Trollstigen, the street of the trolls, is a spectacular mountain route. Shortly after Åndalsnes, it climbs from Isterdal over a length of 18 kilometers in eleven serpentines with an average gradient of 12% to the top of the pass at 700 meters. The Trollstigen is one of the Norwegian Scenic Routes and is a tourist magnet. Depending on the weather, the road can be used from about mid-May to the end of September. It is narrow, in some cases almost single-lane, so that car or bus drivers have to demonstrate high driving skills and good nerves.
The panoramic route is surrounded by several 1450 to 1700 meter high mountain ranges with majestic names such as king, queen or bishop. About halfway the road crosses the 320 meter high Stigfossen, a mighty waterfall. There is a visitor center with a large car park at the top of the pass. From there a well-laid path leads to Utsikten (view) approx. 500 meters away. Two viewing platforms above a dizzying slope offer an unrestricted view of the hairpin bends of the Trollstigen.

Shore excursion Åndalsnes the Troll Road and Troll Wall
The Rauma Railway begins in Dombås at 659 meters above sea level as a junction of the Oslo - Trondheim railway line and ends after 114 kilometers in Åndalsnes. During the journey, 32 bridges are crossed and six tunnels are passed. The line was opened in 1924 and the construction time was 16 years.
You can't miss the train terminus in Åndalsnes. The train runs along the Rauma through the Romsdal, past high mountain ranges such as the Troll Wall. Then the railway line crosses the Kylling Bridge, a 76-meter-long natural stone bridge that spans more than 50 meters over the gorge and the river. The view is impressive. The Kylling Bridge is one of the most famous railway bridges in Norway and the symbol of this route. In the small town of Bjorli you can get off and take the next train back.
Andalsnes train station
On summer weekends, a museum train pulled by a steam locomotive runs from Åndalsnes to Bjorli and back. In interesting places the train moves slowly so that the passengers have time to take pictures.

The Norsk Tindesenter is the national mountain sports center. Åndalsnes is considered Norway's mountaineering capital. So it is only logical that this center was created in Åndalsnes. It is dedicated to leisure activities in the mountains. The eye-catching building is located in the middle of town by the Isfjord and was opened by Crown Prince Hakoon in 2016. Norway's highest climbing wall at 21 meters is located in the climbing hall. It offers 60 different climbing routes for different ages and levels of difficulty. In the Norsk Tindesenter there are also climbing courses for beginners and advanced climbers. There is also an interactive exhibition on the development of mountaineering, a library, a museum with a shop and a restaurant.

The hiking trail "Romsdalstreppe" from Åndalsnes to the Rampestreken viewing platform is not suitable for walkers. However, it is easy to master for physically trained people with decent shoes. In winter or in bad weather, make sure you have good shoes and suitable clothing. More than 600 meters in altitude have to be overcome on the approximately two-kilometer route. There are some very steep passages as well as stairs and catwalks. The view from the narrow platform built high over the mountainside is breathtaking. Slightly higher is Mount Nesaksla, which can also be reached by cable car.
Norway's longest cable car, Romsdalsgondolen, takes visitors from Åndalsnes up to Nesaksla at a speed of 10 meters per second. The cable car covers a distance of 1.676 meters and a difference in altitude of around 692 meters. The valley station is located right next to the port and train station, making it easy for guests to reach. The spacious, barrier-free cabins offer space for 45 people and allow all passengers a great panoramic view. At the summit you can explore the area and several vantage points. The Eggen Restaurant is also located here, where you can strengthen yourself. Either you ride both routes with the gondola or hike a stretch past the great Rampestreken viewing platform. To save time, it is best to buy the ticket in advance Get You Guide
Cruise ships call at the pier in the middle of town almost all year round. In winter, however, only a few ships stop in Åndalsnes in search of the northern lights. The place is small. The tourist information, the train station and the Norsk Tindesenter are a short distance away opposite the cruise ship dock.

The cruise lines offer organized shore excursions, for example bus trips to the Trollwand and Trollstigen or trips with the Raumabahn. If the stay in the country is not too tight, you can plan and undertake these excursions on your own. All sights in Åndalsnes are within walking distance.

Visiting Andalsnes, Norway
During our 14 Night P&O Arcadia cruise, we visited the port of Andalsnes in Norway.
(Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWF_pIXm4hY )
About Andalsnes
Andalsnes is a town popular with cruise lines. It is located along the Isfjorden, at the mouth of the Rauma River, at the north end of the Romsdalen valley.
It has many attractions such as Hiking, the Rauma Railway and Trollstigen
Our day in Andalsnes
As you will see in our video above, we were up early so we could watch the spectacular view as we sailed in. Today we had decided to hike to the Rampestreken view point, somewhere we went when on our honeymoon cruise.
The climb up to Rampestreken is classed as a moderate hike however the last part is quite challenging. Even at the early stages you are rewarded with some great views, but if you push on to the top it’s definitely worth it. If you plan to do this hike, allow a minimum of 2 to 3 hours.
The Rampestreken lookout is 537 meters above sea level, as you walk further out on the platform you’ll will be rewarded with a jaw dropping view of Åndalsnes below.
Having come this far, we decided to push on and make our way to the top of Nesaksla. It’s a further 20 minutes of hiking and a bit more challenging, but at 708 meters above sea level the views are utterly breath-taking!
The way back down was just as challenging as the way up and with more visitors now on the trail, we were glad we came early.
As you will see from our video, it was a gorgeous day in Andalsnes! Next time we visit we will give the Ruma Railway a go.
