A quick scan of comments on the page shows that American Express representatives are highly responsive to customer feedback of all shapes and sizes.

At one time, American Express also operated a Twitter page called Ask AmEx. This page is no longer active, instead directing visitors, “For Amex service, please contact us directly by phone, app or at http://amex.co/contactus .”

And in general, American Express strongly advises its customers to reach on through more private channels to address personal customer service matters. Before corresponding and transmitting personal information through any of these channels, be sure that you’ve taken all the appropriate steps to protect your privacy, your identity, and your account information. American Express stresses the importance of protecting your privacy, especially when corresponding through its social media channels.

In its Community Guidelines statement , American Express advises account holders to “protect your privacy and don’t share personal information about you, your family, or others on the American Express Facebook page. For example, you should never post your Card number, Social Security Number, phone number, or other non-public personal information about yourself or anyone else.”

While it may seem obvious that you shouldn’t share your Social Security Number on Facebook, there are plenty of far less obvious ways that identity thieves, hackers, and credit card scammers can steal your information. Amex Business Platinum card review: Big bonus and luxury benefits

Ethan Steinberg

Editor's note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information and offers.

The Business Platinum Card® from American Express overview

The Business Platinum Card® from American Express is one of the best business rewards cards around, thanks to its large welcome bonus and the sheer number of value-added perks it offers cardmembers. While it requires some work to take full advantage of them, the effort can pay off with savings of hundreds or even thousands of dollars per year. Card rating *: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

* Card rating is based on the opinion of TPG's editors and is not influenced by the card issuer.

With premium cards in the mainstream these days, many people are comfortable paying annual fees of over $400. The Business Platinum Card from American Express stands out above even that, though, with a $695 annual fee (see rates and fees ) — although its annual statement credits and benefits go above and beyond to mitigate that yearly cost.

Between its high annual fee and a handful of business-focused perks, this card certainly won't be suitable for every small business — especially ones that don't log major travel expenses or ones with primary spending areas more in line with the bonus categories offered by other business cards . Still, it has some valuable perks, making it a strong choice for many businesses.

This card has a recommended credit score of 670 and above.

Let's dive into the card details so you can decide if it's a good fit for your business.

Amex Business Platinum pros and cons

Amex business platinum welcome offer.

New Amex Business Platinum applicants can earn 150,000 points after spending $20,000 in the first three months. Based on TPG's valuations , the Membership Rewards points this card earns are worth 2 cents apiece. So, if you can manage the $20,000 spending requirement, you'll earn points worth $3,000 toward travel. This matches the best welcome offer we have seen on this card.

american express business travel customer service

While $20,000 in three months might not be hard for businesses with a lot of cash flow, if your enterprise is smaller, you could consider prepaying as many expenses as you can afford during your first three months to help earn your welcome offer.

On the other hand, if this type of spending is out of your league, another business card with a lower bonus threshold, a smaller annual fee and more targeted earning categories might be a better fit for you in the long run.

Amex Business Platinum benefits

Amex's bevy of statement credits, easily totaling over $1,500 in annual benefits, can help cardmembers potentially offset the initial shock of that high annual fee. Here's a close look at all of them (enrollment is required for select benefits):

* These three credits are slated to end on Dec. 31 .

Alongside the plethora of statement credits you may (or may not) be able to use, the Amex Business Platinum shines through with its other travel perks.

Aside from access to Amex's Centurion Lounges , your card will open the door to the extensive American Express Global Lounge Collection . It is comprised of more than 1,500 lounges worldwide, including Delta Sky Clubs that you can enter when you have an eligible same-day flight on that airline, Priority Pass lounge access (excluding restaurant locations), Escape Lounges and Lufthansa Lounges when you have a same-day flight on that airline.

However, it's worth noting that you'll be limited to 10 total Delta Sky Club visits per year starting Feb. 1, 2025 — unless you spend $75,000 in a calendar year to unlock unlimited access.

Enrollment is required for select benefits.

american express business travel customer service

As for benefits that come in handy once you reach your destination, this card allows you to register for complimentary Gold status with Hilton Honors and Gold Elite status with Marriott Bonvoy , which provide better earnings and benefits during stays with these two brands.

Cardmembers also enjoy complimentary elite car rental status with multiple programs, including Avis Preferred, Hertz Gold Plus Rewards and National Emerald Club. Enrollment is required for these benefits.

The Amex Business Platinum Card is also great for business purchases, as you might imagine. It features extended warranty protection * that prolongs eligible U.S. manufacturer warranties of five years or less by an additional year, saving business owners time and money if something happens to an item they buy.

Additionally, the card's purchase protection covers accidental damage or theft for up to 90 days after purchase, up to $10,000 per covered purchase and $50,000 per cardmember account per calendar year, so it's a great choice for expensive items.*

Aside from these two specific benefits, the card's other notable perks include:

  • Cellphone protection , for a maximum of $800 per claim with a limit of two approved claims per 12-month period. Coverage for a stolen or damaged eligible cellphone is subject to the terms, conditions, exclusions and limits of liability of this benefit.**
  • Access to the Cruise Privileges Program and the International Airline Program .
  • A 35% rebate when you use Pay with Points to cover a first- or business-class ticket on any airline or an economy ticket on one airline of your choice (up to 1 million points back per calendar year).

* Eligibility and benefit level varies by card. Terms, conditions and limitations Apply. Please visit americanexpress.com/benefitsguide for more details. Underwritten by AMEX Assurance Company. **Eligibility and benefit level varies by card. Terms, conditions and limitations Apply. Please visit americanexpress.com/benefitsguide for more details. Earning points on the Amex Business Platinum

Amex Business Platinum cardholders will earn 1.5 Membership Rewards points per dollar on up to $2 million in eligible purchases in the U.S. per calendar year in the following categories:

  • Electronic goods retailers
  • Cloud service providers
  • U.S. construction materials and hardware supplies
  • Shipping providers
  • Purchases of $5,000 or more

Cardmembers earn 5 points per dollar on airfare and prepaid hotel purchases with American Express Travel ( including Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts ).

All other purchases earn 1 point per dollar.

Redeeming points on the Amex Business Platinum

We recommend transferring your Membership Rewards points to any of Amex's hotel and airline partners for maximum value. You can also redeem your points for merchant gift cards or to cover charges on your bill. However, these options significantly devalue your rewards to 1 cent per point or less, so we don't recommend using your points this way.

american express business travel customer service

The easiest redemption option that still offers decent value is American Express Travel's Pay with Points feature, which allows you to receive a 35% rebate when you use points toward first- and business-class flights on any airline, as well as economy-class flights on your selected airline . This boosts your redemption value for these purchases from 1 cent to 1.54 cents per point.

Just note that the 35% rebate is capped at 1 million points back per calendar year, and you must have the full number of points for the standard redemption in your account at the time of booking. You'll then receive the rebate within one or two billing cycles.

Transferring points on the Amex Business Platinum

Again, you can unlock even more value from your earnings by transferring your Membership Rewards points to any of Amex's 21 airline or hotel partners . Most transfers occur at a ratio of 1:1 and process instantly. Going this route may take a bit of research, but a little work can help increase the value of your points significantly above the TPG valuation.

american express business travel customer service

You'll also want to watch for Amex's regular transfer bonuses, which can further increase the value of your points.

TPG credit cards writer Chris Nelson frequently receives outsized value by utilizing Amex's generous transfer bonuses to Avianca LifeMiles , redeeming his points for lie-flat seats, such as United Polaris business-class flights to Europe.

Which cards compete with the Amex Business Platinum?

If you feel that your business might not be able to get the full value out of the Business Platinum Card, you might want to consider other options:

  • If you want a lower annual fee but higher earning rates: The American Express® Business Gold Card offers similar redemption options to the Business Platinum but at a lower annual fee of $375 (see rates and fees ). It earns 4 points per dollar on the two categories you spend the most on each month (on up to $150,000 in combined purchases for these two categories per calendar year, then 1 point per dollar after that). For more information, please read our full review of the Amex Business Gold .
  • If you don't want business-specific benefits: The Platinum Card® from American Express has perks less tailored to small businesses. You'll still earn valuable Membership Rewards points, receive up to $1,500 in annual statement credits (as long as you can take advantage of them ) and gain access to the same extensive network of airport lounges worldwide. For more information, please read our full review of the Amex Platinum .
  • If you want to earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points: Chase's Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card is a TPG favorite. It earns 3 points per dollar on the first $150,000 spent in combined purchases on travel, shipping purchases, internet, cable and phone services, and advertising purchases made with social media sites and search engines. For more information, read our full review of the Ink Business Preferred .

Bottom line

The Amex Business Platinum Card is an excellent choice for business travelers with expenses in bonus categories and those that offer statement credits. While it might not be worth it for all business owners, its travel perks are difficult, if not impossible, to beat. With a plethora of travel benefits, the Amex Business Platinum is a must-have card for business owners looking to maximize their travel.

Key takeaways

  • The Amex Business Platinum card offers valuable rewards, premium perks, and an attractive welcome bonus, making it a top choice for business owners.
  • The card comes with an impressive range of benefits that can help offset its hefty $695 annual fee, including airline fee credits, Global Entry or TSA PreCheck enrollment with statement credits, Clear membership statement credits, Priority Pass Select lounge access, wireless provider credits, Amex Offers, Dell statement credits, hotel elite status, and rental car elite status.
  • Adding an authorized user to the card can help earn more rewards, expedite the welcome bonus, and provide access to additional benefits.

When it comes to travel benefits , few cards top The Business Platinum Card® from American Express. The card has long been a favorite for business owners looking for valuable rewards, premium perks like elite status and airport lounge access .

At the moment, the Amex Business Platinum card is offering a welcome bonus of 150,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $20,000 within the first three months of account opening. Considering American Express has a once-per-lifetime rule regarding card welcome bonuses, this is a solid offer to take advantage of if you’ve thought about applying for this card .

If you do get an Amex Business Platinum Card , it’s important to use the card’s various benefits to offset the $695 annual fee. To ensure you’re getting your money’s worth, here are the 10 things you should do when you get the Amex Business Platinum card:

1. Select your airline for the $200 airline fee credit

Airlines are increasingly breaking up standard services into a-la-carte options. As a result, customers end up paying fees for virtually everything. Luckily, the Amex Business Platinum card offers up to $200 in annual airline fee credits. Simply choose an eligible airline and pay for any fees with your Amex Business Platinum card. You’ll automatically get a fee credit of up to $200 per year, taking a large chunk out of the card’s $695 annual fee.

Activating this benefit takes just minutes:

  • Log in to your American Express account and navigate to the “Benefits” tab.
  • Scroll down to the third row of tiles and select “$200 airline fee credit.”
  • From the drop-down menu, select an airline.

While airline selections are final, there have been reports of American Express allowing changes for customers who have not utilized the benefit. It’s always worth reaching out to see if Amex’s customer service team will allow it. That said, it’s worth thinking through your options and choosing an airline based on your expected travel patterns.

2. Apply for Global Entry

If you’ve ever returned home from a trip abroad and wished you could avoid the long line at passport control, there’s an easy solution: Apply for Global Entry. Enrollment in this program allows you to skip the long line and use an automated kiosk instead. Then, you’ll simply cut to a shorter line at passport control and hand over your receipt.

Once approved, your enrollment in Global Entry is valid for five years and includes TSA PreCheck benefits. TSA PreCheck is great for domestic travelers who want to get through the security line faster. You’ll usually get access to a dedicated line and you’ll get to keep your shoes and jacket on while going through security.

With the Amex Business Platinum, you won’t need to pay for Global Entry — this perk is included with the card. Simply pay your $100 application fee with your Amex Business Platinum card and you’ll receive a $100 statement credit to cover the cost of membership. You can claim this benefit every four years. Alternatively, you can opt for just TSA PreCheck. Simply pay for your membership with your card and you’ll receive up to an $85 application fee credit. (Note that, specifically, you’ll get up to a $100 statement credit every four years to cover a Global Entry application or up to an $85 statement credit every four and a half years to cover TSA PreCheck application fees.)

Having Global Entry or TSA PreCheck can improve your travel experience immensely. Even if you’re only taking one trip a year, this benefit can take much of the stress out of airport transit. If you have the Amex Business Platinum card, claiming your credit is a must.

3. Claim the $189 Clear credit

In addition to Global Entry and PreCheck, the Amex Business Platinum card also offers up to a $189 statement credit for Clear membership each year. Clear is an expedited security program that operates at over 50 airports, stadiums and venues nationwide. Not only do members get access to a dedicated security lane, but they can use biometric data (rather than a physical ID) to get through.

Claiming the Clear credit is as simple as claiming the Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit. All you have to do is pay your Clear application fee with your Amex Business Platinum card and you’ll receive a $189 statement credit.

4. Activate Priority Pass Select

There’s no need to pay for overpriced, subpar airport food when you can enjoy free drinks and food at an airport lounge. As an Amex Business Platinum cardholder, you’ll get free access to Priority Pass’s network of over 1,300 lounges worldwide. The best part? You can bring a guest with you.

Enrolling for Priority Pass Select membership is simple. All you have to do is follow these steps:

  • Scroll down and look for “American Express Global Lounge Collection.” Select “Enroll in Priority Pass Select.”
  • Read through the terms and scroll down to the checkbox indicating you agree to the terms. Click “Enroll.”
  • Your enrollment will be processed within 72 hours and you’ll receive a physical card within 10 to 14 days.

Skip the long lines at Starbucks and enjoy a free latte at the airport lounge instead. You’ll often have a quieter space than the airport gate and save a few dollars on food.

5. Claim the $120 wireless provider credit

Whether you’re on a basic cellphone plan or have a business account with multiple lines, you can save up to $10 per month by charging your cellphone bill to the Amex Business Platinum card. This benefit is capped at up to $120 in statement credits per year. Unfortunately, bundled services are excluded and payments must be made directly with wireless phone service providers.

You will need to register for this benefit, but once you do, the monthly credit is automatically applied after your bill is charged to the card. Here’s how:

  • Scroll down and select “$120 Wireless credit.”
  • On the following page, select the checkbox under the terms and conditions and click “enroll.”

6. Check Amex Offers

One of the best ways to get value out of any Amex card — but especially one with a high annual fee like the Amex Business Platinum card — is to take advantage of Amex Offers .

After logging in to your account, you’ll see a tab featuring limited-time offers from popular retailers, ranging from cash back deals to bonus point offers. You’ll need to scroll through and select offers you’re interested in to activate them. Once you make a qualifying purchase, the offer will automatically be applied to your account (though the timing of when it’ll take effect may vary).

As you add offers to your account, additional offers will pop up. So if you’re not thrilled with the current lineup, simply select several offers, log out and log back in to get additional offers to choose from.

7. Claim the $400 annual Dell credit

Dude, you’re getting a Dell — and thanks to American Express, it will cost you a lot less. Every year, Amex Business Platinum cardholders can get up to $400 in statement credits on Dell purchases (up to $200 semi-annually). If you take advantage of this benefit fully, it will really help to offset the card’s $695 annual fee.

Here’s how to claim the annual Dell credit on the Amex Business Platinum card:

  • Scroll down and select “Business Platinum Dell Technologies Benefit.”
  • On the following page, select the checkbox under the terms and conditions and click “Enroll.”
  • Make a purchase at www.dell.com/amex and you’ll receive a statement credit within two to four weeks.

8. Activate Hilton and Marriott Gold elite status

The Amex Business Platinum card offers mid-tier Gold elite status with two hotel loyalty programs: Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy . It usually takes 28 nights or 14 stays a year to earn Hilton Honors Gold status, while Marriott Bonvoy Gold status requires at least 25 nights per year. You can skip right past this requirement by following these steps to claim your complimentary hotel status upgrade:

  • Scroll down and select “Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite Status.” There is also a tile for “Hilton Honors Gold Status Enrollment.”
  • Select “Enroll Now.”
  • Enter your hotel loyalty program number and select “Enroll Now.” Note: You will need a Hilton Honors account and a Marriott Bonvoy account to enroll.

Both Hilton and Marriott Gold elite members receive valuable perks like complimentary room upgrades, bonus points on paid stays and a complimentary breakfast . These types of hotel benefits can make your next stay a little more comfortable while saving you money. The fact that you can get these perks just for being an Amex Business Platinum cardholder and filling out a quick form makes it a no-brainer.

9. Claim rental car elite status

The Amex Business Platinum partners with three major rental car companies to offer elite status. This includes Avis Preferred Plus, Hertz Gold Plus Rewards and National Car Rental Emerald Club Executive status. Elite benefits vary by program, but you can generally expect complimentary vehicle upgrades and bonus points. These are nice perks that can make for a better car rental experience.

Once you have your new Amex Business Platinum card, it’s worthwhile to take a few minutes to claim your rental car elite status benefits. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  • Scroll down until you see “Premium Car Rental Status.”
  • Select “Learn More.”
  • Under each of the three rental car programs, select “Enroll with [program name].” You’ll be prompted to create a loyalty account that will automatically include upgraded elite status.

10. Add an authorized user

Adding an authorized user to your Amex Business Platinum card has several benefits. For starters, it can help you earn more rewards on business expenses and earn the welcome bonus much faster.

Sometimes Amex even offers bonus points when you add an authorized user. In June 2021, for example, American Express offered up to 20,000 bonus points for each authorized user on the Amex Platinum who spent $2,000 within the first six months of account opening.

Aside from these incentives, authorized users also receive some benefits offered to primary cardholders. This includes Amex lounge access benefits , rental car and hotel program elite statuses, Global Entry or TSA PreCheck and Amex Offers.

The bottom line

The Business Platinum Card from American Express offers an incredible number of benefits that you can take advantage of to save money — or gain luxurious perks — on business and travel expenses. Just be sure to use enough credits and perks to offset the card’s high annual fee .
