Tasmanian Wilderness

The Tasmanian Wilderness hosts a diversity of unspoiled habitats and ecosystems, with plants and animals found nowhere else, and some of the world's oldest and most extensive tracts of temperate rainforest. It also boasts some of the cleanest air and waterways in the world, such as the Franklin, Gordon and Arthur Rivers. The rugged and pristine coastlines around Cape Grim on the west, juxtaposed with the beautiful turquoise waters of the Freycinet Peninsula on the east, highlight that you have just about reached the bottom of the planet, remote and largely untouched by human activity.

Join us on a seven-day fly-around exploration, enjoying the abundant local produce and epic wilderness, all shared by a small group of like-minded travellers and expert local guides who will happily tell you about life in their region of Tasmania's great wilderness.

Tour Itinerary: Tasmanian Wilderness

B,L,D: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Depart Moorabbin Airport at 8:00 am for Burnie on Tasmania’s Northwest coast.

Head to Stanley for a behind-the-scenes tour with a local farmer to learn about Cape Grim Beef, renowned for its quality and ethical practices. Enjoy lunch with local delicacies, including Cape Grim Beef, at Highfield House prepared by Provenance Kitchen. Walk off lunch with a guided tour of the old homestead, outbuildings and gardens of the Highfield House estate, built in 1826.

Stop at the charming township of Stanley for a short tour and time to stroll through the delightful shops. Marvel at ‘The Nut’ overlooking the township and enjoy the breathtaking 360-degree views from the chairlift.

2 nights: Tall Timbers Hotel, Studio

Journey deep into the cool temperate rainforests of the Tarkine wilderness to Arthur River, Tasmania’s only completely wild major river, never logged or dammed, known as 'The Edge of the World,' with 15,000 km between it and South America. Soak up the serenity and enjoy lunch as you cruise this pristine river, immersed by densely forested riverbanks.

On the return, stop at the hidden Trowutta Arch, slightly off the beaten track in some of Tasmania’s lush forestry.

This morning head out to the most northern tip of the Tasmanian mainland, to stunning Cape Grim in Woolnorth. Learn about the indigenous and western history of this remarkable region. Stand on the cliff tops of the Wind Farm, drive through dairy lands to the Cape Grim coastline and breathe deep, as they say the cape has the cleanest air on earth.

Retrace your steps, stopping in Smithton at the Duck River Pavilions to enjoy a cheese and honey tasting before a light lunch.

Returning to Burnie Airport, take off mid afternoon and see The Tarkine from a different perspective as you fly south to Strahan. Arriving on the magnificent West Coast, check into your harbour view room at Strahan Village. Time to relax and refresh, enjoy the peace and tranquillity from your balcony before a delicious buffet dinner.

2 nights: Strahan Village, Hilltop Harbour View Room

This morning a stunning 2.5-hour journey aboard the iconic West Coast Wilderness Railway from Regatta Point. Travelling in premium Wilderness Carriage with balcony, a locally inspired light menu is served along the way. Meander deep into cool rainforests, over the Iron Bridge at Teepookana before disembarking at Lower Landing Station on the King River for a wander, then return to Strahan.

Time to explore Strahan township, perhaps browse the heritage station museum, quaint shops and galleries or wander the picturesque waterfront.

Later, it’s a short stroll to see Australia’s longest-running play, ‘The Ship That Never Was’, a dramatic and hilarious true story about the last great escape from Sarah Island.

This evening, dine on authentic dishes crafted with the freshest produce at Risby Cove Restaurant on the water’s edge. This was the former site of the Risby Bros. Huon Pine sawmill.

Cruise deep into the wilderness aboard Spirit of the Wild. Glide through the pristine waters of Macquarie Harbour and the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. Enjoy the luxurious Premier Upper Deck with full-length windows and take in the grand views while grazing on chef-prepared food and Tasmanian wines. During your six-hour cruise, stretch your legs on two accessible walking tours: at Heritage Landing, wander the rainforest boardwalk, and on Sarah Island, explore the ruins of a penal colony.

From the boat to the air, in no time, you will be arriving at the delightfully named Friendly Beaches. Then, it is only a few minutes by road to the breathtaking Freycinet National Park and awe-inspiring Hazards Mountain Range.

2 nights : Freycinet Lodge, Premier Cabin

Boarding right at your doorstep, experience Freycinet Peninsula’s incredible cliffs, sea caves and hidden coves as you cruise along the stunning granite coastline to the vibrant blue Wineglass Bay. In the Sky Lounge on the upper deck, you have direct access to the captain’s bridge and a private observation deck. A selection of gourmet delights including seafood, smoked meats and cheeses is served accompanied with local beverages.

Disembark and return to the lodge for some free time.

Tonight dine at The Bay Restaurant, overlooking Great Oyster Bay. The Bay is renowned for its outstanding seafood and inspired seasonal menu and is consistently rated as one best restaurants on the east coast.

More stunning scenery is seen while exploring local vineyards, and you can hear a little about the area's growing and winemaking process. At Devils Corner, a seafood and wood-fired pizza lunch with paired wines awaits you; enjoy as you soak up the iconic sea and mountain views.

The afternoon is complemented with a Tasmanian cheese platter at Craigie Knowe, the oldest vineyard on the East Coast.

Before you know it, return to Friendly Beaches for your flight back over Bass Strait arriving Moorabbin around 5.30 pm.

Gordon River, Strahan

Tahune Air Walk

Walk Amongst the Towering Trees of Tasmania

WHAT SPARKS YOUR INTEREST?

  • Where To Stay
  • Things To Do
  • Book a Tour

Tasmania is known for towering trees. In fact, the second tallest tree in the world lives here. So it's no surprise that the Tasmanian government went through the trouble to build the Tahune Airwalk. Built amongst the treetops in the Huon River Valley , the Tahune Airwalk takes you 50 metres above the forest floor. From here, you'll be able to see across the verdant valleys that earn Tasmania the nickname 'Apple Island.' Take And the journey concludes at a cantilever sitting high above the intersection of the Huon and Picton Rivers to give you breathtaking views. There's no better way to experience the healthy natural abundance of the Tasmanian island.

Getting There

You'll have to get to the southerly town of Geeveston to take the sealed Arve Road to Tahune Adventures. The drive takes about an hour and a half from Hobart and spans about 88 kilometres. Launceston sits about 288 kilometres to the north and that drive will take you nearly four hours. The drive from Devonport , Tasmania's north coast port town, will take you four hours and 33 minutes and that trip spans more than 370 kilometres.

Airwalk Access

You'll have to have a moderate level of fitness to ascend the 112 concrete steps to the top of the walk. Most of the walk is about 20 to 30 metres above the forest floor before ascending to a staggering 50 metres at the walk's cantilevered conclusion. There is disabled access to the top of the walk if steps are impossible for you. Simply let an employee know that you require disabled access at the ticket office when you arrive.

The entire 619-metre trip takes about 50 minutes return. Many take a little longer to complete the trip because of the abundant photo opportunities along the way. But the entire Airwalk should not take you more than a morning or an afternoon to complete. This will allow you to descend back down to Geeveston to enjoy the quirky southerly town before heading back through the apple orchards of the Huon River Valley . Or you can choose to enter the Hartz Mountain National Park in the afternoon after a morning on the walk.

Eagle Hang Gliding

The Airwalk isn't the only attraction at Tahune Adventures. Thrill-seekers can choose to take a five-minute cable hang gliding course over the Huon River. Strapped in safely, you whisk 250 metres across the raging Huon River while hanging 50 metres in the air. The hang glider is securely attached to a cable so there's no chance of veering off course.

Hang gliding is totally optional but is an exhilarating way to experience the towering trees of the Huon River Valley. If you choose to hang glide, be sure to wear closed toed shoes and you must weigh between 25 and 100 kilograms. The hang gliding ride is also closed during inclement weather so plan your trip accordingly.

Pet Friendly, Free Camping and Tasmanian Resident Perks

Your four-legged friends are welcome at the Tahune River Walk so long as they are on a leash. And if you have any Tasmanian friends when visiting the island, be sure to bring them. Tahune Adventures also offers free camping for one night with a Tahune Airwalk entry receipt.

Visitor Centre and Café

Feel free to rock up to the visitor centre on the day of your visit to purchase tickets to the Airwalk. You'll also find a café serving up the freshest Huon Valley produce including craft beers , local ciders and wines. The ciders are particularly delicious as many of the best makers produce the libation in the valley below. You'll also find free Wi-Fi at the café as well as gas barbecues and picnic facilities.

Tahune Lodge and Cabins

The facility offers up a lodge that can accommodate up to 23 people. The Lodge contains up to eight separate rooms in a self-catering accommodation. Or you can choose a little more luxury by hiring a cabin. The cabins are perfect for families with two bedrooms. One-bedroom features a queen bed while the other features bunk beds. And you don't even have to worry about bringing your own food as the café offers up delicious meals.

Huon Pine Walk

The Airwalk isn't the only hike on the premises. Take a short stroll along a beautiful riverbank to one of the most accessible stands of rare Huon Pines in the world. This 20-minute return walk takes place on a narrow boardwalk which is not suitable for wheelchairs. Staff can direct you to a more accessible track if need be.

Huon Pine Trees are incredibly rare because they were harvested to near extinction in the 1800s. Its waterproof wood is pliable and repels insects while making a fragrant sap which made it the perfect pine for shipbuilding in Tasmania's early days. But you can still experience these trees in all their mighty glory at the Tahune River Walk.
