It also has a whopping 4 glacier sea days, which doesn’t happen on the vast majority of Alaska cruises. This is a very special Alaska cruise, and it’s starting from San Francisco!

15 tips for choosing San Francisco as your Alaska cruise departure port

Should you choose San Francisco as your Alaska cruise departure port?

If you live in the San Francisco Bay area, of course there is nothing that beats the convenience of cruising out of your home port!

Whether you’re flying in or you’re local, there are some things to keep in mind about cruises from San Francisco.

Are Alaska cruises from San Francisco good or bad? Whether these things will make it or break it for you will be highly individual!

When can you do an Alaska cruise from San Francisco?

You can do an Alaska cruise from San Francisco that starts in the months of May, June, July, August, and September. Of these months, September is the worst month to cruise to Alaska because you have the greatest chance of bad weather.

Other than that, any of the months can be a good time to go to Alaska… depending on what you are interested in!

Spring and summer offers something special. In May there are snow-capped mountains, and in the summer you have a better chance of seeing wildlife.

You have a lot of sea days on a cruise from San Francisco to Alaska.

Because you’re coming from “so far away” to get to Alaska, it just takes more time to get to Alaska from San Francisco compared to Seattle or Vancouver.

This means extra sea days compared to northern cruise departure ports.

You will start off your cruise with 2 straight sea days, and you will also end your cruise with 2 straight sea days before you return to San Francisco.

Plus you will have 1 other sea day, along with 1 glacier sea day.

So a typical Alaska cruise from San Francisco will have 6 sea days.

This means half of your cruise is spent at sea.

No problem if you love sea days, but if the idea of so many sea days makes you go no thanks then you are better off doing a one-way cruise between Vancouver and Anchorage !

There are no 7-day Alaska cruises from San Francisco.

Because San Francisco is so far away from Alaska, you won’t find 7-day Alaska cruises from San Francisco.

The San Francisco cruises tend to be 10 or 11 day cruises… which really means it’s at least 12 days since you will arrive back to San Francisco on day 12.

And then if you’re flying in to get to San Francisco, it’s always a good idea to arrive at least a day early to allow for flight delays, so this means you will need at least 13-14 days to do an Alaska cruise from San Francisco.

You have a greater chance of rough seas sailing out of San Francisco compared to Vancouver.

Starting out of San Francisco means that you will be sailing out in the open ocean more than Vancouver or Seattle. This has potential for rougher seas, especially the later in the season that you cruise.

There are Alaska cruises from San Francisco with and without Glacier Bay National Park.

Not all cruises go to Glacier Bay. If this is important to you, be sure to look to see that your cruise itinerary includes it! Many people say that Glacier Bay National Park is a must in an Alaska cruise itinerary.

What glacier sea days can you have on an Alaska cruise from San Francisco?

When you want to do a normal 10-day cruise or 11-day cruise, the scenic cruising glacier sea days that you can choose from are Glacier Bay National Park, Endicott Arm, or Tracy Arm Fjord.

Round-trip cruises from San Francisco are required to stop at a foreign port before returning.

Because round-trip cruises from San Francisco must stop at a foreign port, all Alaska cruises from San Francisco have either Victoria or Prince Rupert on the cruise itinerary. These ports are both in Canada.

New cruise line to sail from Los Angeles in spring 2026

A well-known name in the world of air and space travel, will be bringing its new cruise line to California.

Virgin Voyages, another business venture from billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson, will begin sailing out of Los Angeles in the spring of 2026.

The cruise line, which launched in 2021, will be bringing its newest ship to Los Angeles as part of a North American tour that will see its maiden voyage begin in New York City.

Brilliant Lady is a 912-foot cruise ship with a capacity of more than 2,700 with 20 onboard eateries, 17 decks, modern tech-savvy cabins, and designer suites “fit for a rockstar,” the company says. The ship has an adapted frame that is designed to sail through the Panama Canal and navigate “rugged new landscapes including the vast glaciers and fjords of Alaska.”

Voyages are 21+, and feature entertainment lineups that the cruise line compares to a festival experience.

“Virgin Voyages started as a simple idea for me and has blossomed into the world’s top cruise line with a full fleet of ships,” Branson said in a news release. “This ship is going to be brilliant in every possible way, and that includes the incredible new places we can travel to.”

The Brilliant Lady is being built in Italy and will make its official debut when it sets sail from New York in September 2025. From there, it will travel across North America, spending several weeks at busy ports like Miami, Seattle and the Panama Canal.

It will arrive in Los Angeles in April 2026 and will offer five- to eight-night itineraries that include visits to Baja California, Puerto Vallarta, San Diego, Santa Barbara, San Francisco and Catalina Island.

Its arrival in Los Angeles will mark Virgin Voyages’ debut in California. The cruise line has three other ships that are in service now, currently sailing from Miami, Barcelona, Spain, Athens, Greece and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Nirmal Saverimuttu, CEO of Virgin Voyages, says the cruise line is always looking for ways to innovate and challenge itself to “keep things fresh and exciting.” He says that starts with expanding into new destinations and showing travelers how the cruise line is different from others.
