Pykara Lake / Boat Club Ooty Timings

Note : Pykara Lake boating timings are from 10:00 AM and 5:30 PM on all days of the week

Rising from the Mukurthi peak, north of Ooty, the Pykara River gives birth to a series of fine waterfalls and the large Pykara Lake. While the drive towards the lake is an idyllic experience in itself, the boating inside is no less joyful.

Situated amidst a lush green shola forest, Pykara Lake is formed as a result of the dam and power plant constructed on the river. A few hundred meters north of the lake, the river tumbles down the rocks to form the famed Pykara Falls . The Boat Club (or Boat House, as popularly called) in the vicinity, adds to the charm of this little panoramic tourist complex among the hills.

This Pykara Lake Boat House, apart from housing a small cafeteria, has several motorboats ranging from 8-seaters to 15-seaters. If you’re looking for a thrilling ride instead, you can take the small speedboats.

The greens around, thick forests at the shores and the pines in the backdrop, all create an atmosphere to make you hop on the decks. At Pykara Lake and Falls Ooty, you have everything you need to enjoy a day out with your friends/family or enjoy a solitary nature walk. Whether you’re a nature lover, photographer or a newly married couple, you shouldn’t miss this attraction near Ooty.

Sit back, relax and read what all you can do at Pykara Lake, apart from gorging on the scenic natural beauty.

Things to do at Pykara Lake

Here’s a list of activities you can undertake at Pykara Lake Ooty.

1. Boat riding at Pykara Lake – Maintained by the state government entity – Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation, Pykara Lake Boat House has various motorboats and speedboats available for hire. The large motorboats give you a ride on the lake for 20-30 minutes. Get on board, and admire the beauty of the surroundings while the captain is manoeuvring it around. The small speedboats, on the other hand, are for a 10-minute adventure on the water.

2. Hiking to Pykara Falls – About 1.5-2 km from the lake is the rumbling Pykara Falls. The water, instead of falling from a height, cascades down the rocks. There are two high waterfalls there, one of 55 metres (180 ft) height and other of 61 metres (200 ft). Put on your sports shoes and walk up the steps to have a look. Chirping birds and cool breeze will accompany while you tread up the trail from Pykara Lake to Pykara Falls.

A paid battery car service to the falls is also available if you feel the need.

3. Enjoying at the Boat Club – Those who aren’t up for hiking or ready to go into the waters can enjoy their time at the small cafeteria. Walk around, take photographs and sip coffee while watching over the boats. You can buy quick snacks, tea and coffee there.

These are the activities available for you at the Pykara Lake; a place nestled away from the city. The sounds and surroundings are bound to take any stress off for the time being.

Best Time to Visit Pykara Lake

Although water is present year-round, Pykara Lake water level is low during the summer months. Also, the scorching sun makes it a troublesome affair to visit the place during those times. The best time to visit Pykara Lake, therefore, is from October to March. The weather remains pleasant, and even the Pykara Falls are in full force.

Get in there early to avoid rush or waiting time. Boating or hiking in the evening hours will be more comfortable though.

Time to Explore Pykara Lake

Two hours out of your schedule is all you need to explore the lake on a not so busy day. However, during the peak tourist season or on weekends, you will face long waiting times. So, 3-4 hours is a safe assumption to get done with boating and hiking at Pykara Lake. It will also leave you with plenty of time to spend, feasting at the natural beauty.

Pykara Waterfall, found amidst rupturing landscape - Prime places to visit in Ooty

Cascading water has been a mesmerizing sight past millions of centuries. With the weather around the world-changing its normal course, the water bodies are slowly drying up. It’s very difficult to find a waterfall that has good amount of water. In south India, Pyakara Waterfalls have been attracting tourists because this is one of those waterfalls that has an adequate amount of water all through the year.

The cherry on the cake is that there isn’t one waterfall that grabs the attention of the visitors, there are two. One of them has a height of 55 meters and the other one has a height of 61 meters. Both these immerge from the same river that flows down from the mountain. It is one the must-see places to visit in Ooty and you should not miss it.

Boating is the most favorite activity for all the people who visit Pykara Waterfall or lake. Even swimming is possible but only near the upper cascades. In the lower cascade, the flow of water is too much to handle. In the backdrop of Pykara, there is Toda settlement which survives in the natural habitat. The backwater from the dam forms a huge lake. At the very end of the dam, the river waterfalls from the height to form the falls.

A loved picnic spot, Pykara is full of greenery and flower-laden trees. The fragrance of the flowers in the forest around the lake and the waterfall makes the environment even more welcoming and fresh. It is one of the prime Ooty tourist place and also a must include in every Ooty Tour Package.

It is advisable to carry warm and cozy clothes even during the summer season because the temperature dips around the waterfall when it is even slightly cloudy. For those who wish to spend leisure time with their kin, Pykara Waterfall, an Ooty tourist place is an ideal destination. A keen photographer can get the most striking pictures at this location.

Adventure lovers can go trekking but if you are visiting this place during monsoons, going near the falls can be dangerous. Rains are the times when the water flow becomes really heavy and the level of water increases suddenly. To avoid a mishap, don’t try to do stunts around water bodies. For a perfect weekend or a day out with the close ones, Pykara amongst the Ooty places is just wonderful.

Pykara Falls Ooty entry fee

Usually, to visit the waterfalls, there is an entry fee of Rs.5 per head. However, a charge of Rs. 175 per head is taken for boating.

Pykara waterfalls timings

The timings on Monday to Friday are from 9 AM to 6 PM. The timings are from 9 AM to 6:30 PM on Saturday and Sunday.

Pykara Lake, Ooty Overview

Pykara Lake is a popular getaway that is at a distance of about 20 kilometres from Ooty, in the Nilgiri district of Tamil Nadu, India. The Pykara village, along with a beautiful river by the same name, also houses a dam and a power plant. Because of the construction of the dam, the backwaters have formed an enormous lake, which is now known as the Pykara Lake and has become a significant tourist attraction that is visited by large numbers of people all year round. It has everything that a person on vacation can ask for, right from ambience and comfort to scenic beauty. Nature lovers, photographers and adventure seekers should definitely not miss out on this unique and fun-filled place.  The best time to visit the lake is of course during the monsoons, in the months of July and August.

The Pykara is the largest river in the district and is revered by the Todas, an Adivasi community, who consider it to be sacred. The river originates from the Mukurthi peak and then navigates through the hilly terrain to reach the edge of the plateau, where it falls delightfully in a succession of breathtakingly beautiful waterfalls. The last two waterfalls are known as the Pyakara Falls and fall from the heights of 55 metres and 61 metres. The marvellous lake is just 2 kilometres away from these waterfalls.   The area in the vicinity of the Pykara Lake is surrounded by the shola forests, which is the local name for the forests here. Numerous Kollywood or Tamil Cinema filmmakers have shot movie scenes and songs here, around this picturesque lake. The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) also runs a boathouse, rest house and a restaurant in this area. Speedboats and motorboats can be hired to enjoy exciting rides in the lake. The boathouse is a fantastic place to sit back, relax and gorge on some delicious food.
