• Ninh Binh Itinerary: Explore Rural Vietnam On Your Own

what to do in ninh binh itinerary tam coc paddy rice fields

Some of the most memorable days of my 2-month backpacking trip in Asia were spent in Ninh Binh , Vietnam . I’m sharing my full detailed Ninh Binh itinerary to visit Vietnam’s hidden gem.

The whole Ninh Binh province is an extremely low-key and amazingly scenic place, still not packed with tourists (yet). It’s the perfect place to get to know the real authentic Vietnam .

The drawback of this is that information online about Ninh Binh is still scarce and confusing. Apart from my Ninh Binh guide , of course.

It can be challenging to plan a trip independently to Ninh Binh , but anything is WAY better than to explore Ninh Binh on a soulless and rushed organised tour together with dozens of other travelers.

As a matter of fact, try to stay away from tours in the whole Vietnam .

Ninh Binh Itinerary & FAQs

Some introductory notes about this itinerary:

Who is this itinerary for?

The itinerary is based on my own trip. It’s tailored for independent travelers making their own way in Ninh Binh. I believe this is the way this region should be explored.

How to get around in Ninh Binh?

While there are plenty of tour agencies, it’s better if you have your own wheels. Rent a bike or a motorbike. I strongly recommend the latter, at least on the first day of the itinerary.

How many days do you need in Ninh Binh?

I recommend staying in Ninh Binh for at least two days. Anything less and you’ll need to cut down on some important sights and/or rushing your trip. And who wants to stress while on the countryside?

How rushed is this Ninh Binh itinerary?

It’s definitely NOT a rushed itinerary. You can squeeze in more places if you want. However I suggest allowing some time to really take in the scenery, explore the area calmly and – why not – get wonderfully lost!

2-Day Itinerary to Ninh Binh

I’ve put together a map to help you navigate around Ninh Binh area in these two days. It contains all of the main sights and places worth going – IN ENGLISH!

There’s also some additional sights in case you’ve got more time or want to switch up something.

Day 1 in Ninh Binh – ORANGE pins

  • Trang An Grottoes
  • Hoa Lu Ancient Citadel

Bai Dinh Pagoda

Day 2 in ninh binh- purple pins, tam coc rice fields, bich dong pagoda, thung nham bird park, additional places worth seeing in ninh binh – blue pins.

  • Tam Coc Boat Ride
  • Phat Diem Cathedral
  • Van Long Nature Reserve
  • Cuc Phuong National Park

Now let’s go in detail about these sights!

Day 1 in Ninh Binh

This first day only has 3 places, but each one of them will need a couple of hours to explore. I strongly suggest you get around on a motorbike as distances between these sights are significant.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site , Trang An Landscape Complex is an impressive set of large limestone karst cliffs covered by forest. In the entire area, you can find temples, dozens of valleys and about 50 different caves.

The best way to enjoy this inspiring scenery is to take a boat ride. A lady rower will row the boat for you, the technique they use to manouevre the boat inside the underwater caves is truly amazing. It’s unreal the amount of effort these ladies has to put every day for a living.

Since the whole trip lasts for about 2 hours (!), I helped the rower for some time by using the spare oars.

Trang An was definitely a main highlight of Ninh Binh and apparently a much more beautiful and relaxing ride than Tam Coc ‘s (see below). Being surrounded by the huge mountains in almost every direction while on a tiny boat is truly a spectacular feeling. Don’t miss this!

Trang An Boat Ride – Tips

  • 📍 Where: Trang An is 7km away from Ninh Binh and about 11km from Tam Coc . You can get there by bike, just make sure you head to the pin in the above map – simply searching by “Trang An” in Google Maps will lead you to another place.
  • ⏱ How long: The ride has a duration of 2-3 hours.
  • 💰 How much: The entrance fee is 250k dong + a parking fee for your vehicle.
  • 💡 Tip: Most day tours from Hanoi start arriving around 10, so it’s advisable that you make your way there very early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Hoa Lu Ancient Capital

🇻🇳 VIETNAM | 🈴 Heritage. Hoa Lu was the first capital of Vietnam and home to three full dynasties of Emperors starting on the 10th century. The surrounding mountain ranges provide a natural protection to the old citadel. Looks a pretty badass city entrance to me.

Hoa Lu is the ancient capital of the Dinh and Le dynastys, dating back to the 11th century. It’s located roughly 14km from Ninh Binh and close to the Trang An boat ride.

Today, the remains of this ancient city are just that: remains. The buildings still standing include the royal temples of Dinh Tien Huang , housing a statue of Emperor Dinh Bo Linh and his sons as well as the royal temple of the early Le Dynasty.

Still, more than the buildings or temples, I found Hoa Lu to be beautiful because of the scenery. The ruins are just too ruiny to be memorable IMHO. It’s still worth to have a stroll around and imagine how the city was a millennium ago.

what to do in ninh binh itinerary bai dinh temple

Located 15km away from Ninh Binh city in a mountain area, Bai Dinh Pagoda is a HUGE religious complex. In fact, everything is massive here. Within the 539-hectare premises, there are 5,000 Buddha statues, a 36-ton bronze bell and dozens of Buddhist temples, each more opulent than the other. Usually visitors explore the compound by electric car (!).

It’s the absolute largest pagoda in South East Asia. Climbing to the top gives you an amazing open view over the Ninh Binh province.

Just like Ninh Binh in general, I honestly don’t know how Bai Dinh can fall this much under the radar. But it does and I guess that’s a good thing!

Day 2 in Ninh Binh

Contrarily to the first day, this one can be done on a bike as distances are shorter. All the sights are in or around Tam Coc .

what to do in ninh binh itinerary tam coc paddy rice fields

The boat ride in the Tam Coc rice fields are the main reason tourists come to Ninh Binh . The area is surrounded by hundreds of stony outcrops similar to the ones found in Halong Bay . For this reason, the area is nicknamed “Halong in Land”.

I skipped the boat ride when I heard it’s a hotspot for scams and hawkers. Apart from the ticket fee, the rowers often “ask” (aka demand) tourists a tip on the middle of the ride. Plus, when you get back on shore, you’re coerced to buy some food for your rower. Since I had already experienced the awesome boat ride in Trang An , I decided I could live without it.

A great alternative option to explore the rice fields is on a bike. It’s hassle-free, way more adventurous and cheaper in the end. Cycling along the paddies, waving to the people working on the fields and getting up close with some cute animals on the way felt like the absolute right choice!

what to do in ninh binh itinerary bich dong temple

If you’re coming from Tam Coc , the road to Bich Dong Pagoda is simply gorgeous. At a given point, you’ll be surrounded by huge rice fields with limestone cliffs as a backdrop. Definitely worthy of stopping for some selfie moments!

Bich Dong Pagoda itself is a set of 3 temples enclosed in an mountain. To explore the highest one you need to pass through a series of caves. At some point it’s pitch dark inside, so watch your step!

Inside you can find several Buddhist images carved in stone and hollow stalactites on which you can play some tunes. Some of these caves were used by the Viet Minh to hide from the French during the First Indochina War.

Bich Dong Pagoda – Tips

  • 📍 Where: Bich Dong is located about 2km after Tam Coc center, a 2-min walk from the place we stayed .
  • ⏱ How long: Aim to stay 1 hour maximum, as the site is not that small.
  • 💰 How much: There is no entry fee to the temples, although we had to pay 5,000 dong to park our bike. Motorbikes are double the price.
  • 💡 Tip: Bring comfortable shoes to climb up to the third temple on the very top.

vietnam tips tricks halong bay

Everyone addresses this place as the Hang Mua Caves , but to be honest the caves are nothing special. In fact if I had it skip completely, I wouldn’t have missed anything. Even the ones in Thung Nham Bird Park are better IMHO.

The real appeal of this place lies on the temple on top of the mountain. You can see the set of stairs to get there from a distance. It’s a fair climb of almost 500 (!) steps. Yes, it’s exhausting, specially because they are uneven – some are really tiny, others can be made for giants.

But don’t get discouraged. Once you have had this proper workout, you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular 360° view over the Tam Coc valley. The views over the countryside and paddy fields are truly amazing. There’s no better place to catch your breath and find your inner zen again. Totally worth the effort, believe me.

Hang Mua – Tips

  • 📍 Where: 5 km from Tam Coc. The road there is literally between rice paddies. If it feels you’re in the wrong way, you’re not!
  • ⏱ How long: Allow at least 1-2 hours here, depending on your pace.
  • 💰 How much: The entrance fee is 20,000 dong.
  • 💡 Tip: No need to say you’ll need water and some good comfy shoes to climb up to the temple. I wouldn’t recommend going up if you see the weather is rainy-ish. There’s not much shelter on the way up and with gloomy weather you probably can’t see much anyway.

route ninh binh itinerary thung nham bird park sunset

During my research about Ninh Binh , I’ve NEVER heard of this place. It was the lovely girl on the reception of our hotel that not only suggested us to go to Thung Nham , but offered to be our guide there!

For those who love nature and an adventurous bird-watching trip, the natural reserve of Thung Nham (Nham Valley) is a must go. Deeply enclosed in the mountains, it’s a place with great natural beauty with many underwater caves and rivers. The Hang But (Buddhist Cave) is one of the largest. With lots of stalactites and stalagmites inside sitting beside an underground river, going inside is quite an adventure.

A total of 150 different animals (beware of the snakes!) and more than 40 species of birds – some of them critically endangered species – can be found in Thung Nham . There are so manny there’s even a place inside dedicated to them – the Bird Park .

We took the boat to watch the birds at dusk, the peak time for foraging birds. Picture a small rowing boat on the mangrove forests, with HUNDREDS of birds hanged on the trees, all wrapped around in a drop dead gorgeous forest. The only noise comes from the birds while the sun is setting in the background. Magical.

I went there knowing absolutely nothing about this place and came back mesmerized (can’t thank you enough Trang!).

Thung Nham Bird Park – Tips

  • 📍 How to get there: Thung Nham is about 7km from Tam Coc . Head in the direction of Bich Dong Pagoda and turn left on Anna Tham’s Hotel sign. 5km later, you’ll find the ticket booth for the reserve.
  • ⏱ How long: I’d say a minimum of 1 hour, but you can spend a whole afternoon here.
  • 💰 How much: Entrance fee is normally 100,000 but drops to half after 5pm. There’s a parking fee as well. Once you are inside, you have 2 options to get to the Bird Park : you can either walk (a 1,5km trail, free) or go on a boat ride (30,000 dong).
  • 💡 Tip: Early morning and late afternoon (around dawn and dusk) is when most birds come to the park. Definitely the best time to visit, specially if it is spring or summer.

Extra sights in Ninh Binh

ninh binh self tour

The previous sights are the standard to visit the region. If you’re feeling more adventurous or have a little bit more time, then you can expand your route. And oh boy, there’s a lot to see and do in Ninh Binh !

Right off the get go, you can go on the infamous Tam Coc boat ride. I’d recommend you to only if it’s the right season and the fields are vivid green. Good luck with the hawkers though!

Located east of Ninh Binh city, Phat Diem Cathedral is considered to be one of the most beautiful churches in Vietnam . It’s western-inspired and it’s worth to visit if you’re into architecture or just want to extend your religious-site hopping spree.

Another spot worth looking into is Cuc Phuong National Park , 1.5 hours from Ninh Binh. It’s a well-preserved rainforest, filled with hiking trails, prehistoric caves and ancient trees. It’s also a site with rich fauna: turtles, butterflies and critically endangered primate species can be found here.

Finally in Van Long there’s the option to go on a much more off the beaten track boat ride than Trang An and Tam Coc . It’s relaxing and perfect for bird-watching. The natural reserve also holds the world’s largest population of Delacour’s langurs, a critically endangered primate species.

Driving around Ninh Binh

what to do in ninh binh itinerary driving bike

Ninh Binh is pretty much all flat which makes driving around fairly easy. And pleasant! Actually you could just wander around skipping all sights and the surreal backdrop for your drive would still make the trip worth it. I felt like in a movie set all the time!

That said, Ninh Binh city can be a bit crazy, just like everywhere else in Vietnam . We had to go there to withdraw money – there are currently no ATMs in Tam Coc – but other than that there’s no reason to go there anyway.

My recommendation is to drive slowly, ignore all the noise around you and don’t make any sudden maneuvres. If you stick to this, you’ll be fine.

How much does a bike cost in Ninh Binh?

We rented a motorbike for 100,000 dong per day in Tam Coc . Not the most visually striking one, but it did its job. A bike will cost you roughly half of it. Gas is very cheap, you can fill the deposit for about 70,000 dong.

Read more about getting around on my Ninh Binh guide .

Where to stay In Ninh Binh

Don’t stay in Ninh Binh city. I can’t understand how people come to such a nature-gifted place and stay in an uninspiring and ugly city.

Instead, base yourself in Tam Coc , in the countryside. It’s a much more pleasant small town closer to the main attractions – including the rice fields.

The only downside from the place we stayed (below) was the location: 2,5km from Tam Coc center, with all the shops and restaurants. On the other hand, we had a quieter location with much better views!

ninh binh hotel recommendation tam coc

Anna Tham Hotel View   Beautiful views and clean HUGE rooms, but the best is the lovely family who will treat you like one of them. It’s a 5-min bike ride from center Tam Coc in a quiet location. Book now

Ninh Binh solo traveller guide (The Ultimate guide)

Solo Traveller guide Ninh Binh

Ninh Binh is known as Halong Bay on land, one of the top 4 must-see tourist destinations in Northern Vietnam after  Halong, Hanoi, and Sapa. This Ninh Binh Solo Traveller guide by Hanoi Eco Tour is all you need to know as a solo traveler in Ninh Binh, Vietnam, including things to do in Ninh Binh for a solo traveler, where to stay, where to eat, how to get around .

Ninh Binh is an excellent place to discover as a solo traveller since it’s safe, fun, and easy to get around. Ninh Binh offers the best things for a solo traveler, such as the stunning natural beauty of towering limestone cliffs, lush green rice fields, hearty local food, rich history, friendly locals, and many more.

Table of Contents

Why is Ninh Binh great for solo travellers?

Ninh binh is super safe.

Ninh Binh is a great place to get around on your own, even stroll around Tam Coc in the evening. Apprently, the traffic in Ninh Binh is way different from Hanoi. I feel like there are very few vehicles along your way; most of them are tourists.

Easy to get around

As a tourist, you can get around by riding a push bike or a motorbike since the traffic in Ninh Binh is quiet except on the weekend since lots of Vietnamese travel during this Period. Suppose you can’t ride a push bike or a motorbike. In that case, you can also book a taxi or a private car at a reasonable cost or sit on the back of the motorbike is a great way to explore Ninh Binh since the distance between tourists attractions isn’t far at all, only 10 to 30 minutes from one place to another.

Things to do in Ninh Binh for a solo traveller

What to do in ninh binh on one day trip.

If you have a time budget, taking a day trip to Ninh Binh to see its highlights is good enough. A guided tour is an excellent idea to explore Ninh Binh on a day tour since you have limited time. There are many daily seat-in-coach terms from Hanoidoing the same things; even they will take you to the same buffet restaurant near Trang An. The majority of these tours are good. The only is that, if you aren’t a big fan of a big group, then pick a private guided tour to personalize your experience.

Ninh Binh will be busy in the peak season from Nov to April, but not always; it will be active. If you are taking a private guided tour to Ninh Binh, try to discuss with the guide how to avoid big groups by traveling with an opposite itinerary from other tour groups and, for example, making a boat trip to Tam Coc in the morning instead of the afternoon, having lunch in a less busy restaurant, not the one where most of the guided tours bring visitors there.

So it would be best if you double-checked which restaurant where the tour guide is taking you there. But the restaurant needs to be convenient with the tour route also. So the guide’s restaurant choice is also essential because they know the tour route better than you.

A typical Ninh Binh itinerary for a day trip would be

  • Hoa Lu ancient capital
  • Mua viewpoint

Sampan boat trip in Tam Coc

What to do in Ninh Binh for two days trip as a solo traveller

If you have more than a day, spend two days discovering Ninh Binh is the best. Take a leisurely walk around the Tam Coc area through village roads and hidden alleyways where most tourists don’t go.

You could see the lush green rice paddy field, local pagodas, temples, and local wet markets near the bridge.

If you love something different, book the Ninh Binh farm tour to learn hands-on farming experiences such as plowing with cows, mini cooking classes, biking rural paths, and more.

For nightlife, walk around the Tam Coc area, with many bars, restaurants, cafes, pubs, and massage stores.

From my personal experience, I do recommend Chookie Beer Garden to get some drinks and chill out. If you are a foodie lover, taking a Ninh Binh food tour is a great choice, or checking out Pho Co Hoa Lu – tons of photo opportunities: Silver pagoda, local food, and a drink at Highland Coffee.

Things to do near Tam Coc, Ninh Binh, in one day for solo travellers

  • Phat Diem Cathedral
  • Galaxy grotto
  • Cuc Phuong national park
  • Van Long nature reserve

What to do in Ninh Binh for three days

There are three couples of options to choose from

Option 1: Cuc Phuong national park day trip from Tam Coc

Cuc Phuong national park is an excellent choice for nature lovers.

  • Trekking into the jungles to the 1000-year-old tree
  • Hiking the Prehistoric Man cave
  • Check out Endangered Primate Center and Turtle Conservation Center.

Option 2: Phat Diem Stone Cathedral and boat trip in Galaxy Grotto (Dong Thien Ha) – Off the beaten track

This impressive Phat Diem cathedral – 1-hour drive from Tam Coc, draws attention due to its unique blend of European and local architectural styles. The stunning structure perfectly fuses traditional Vietnamese pagoda roofs and western gothic walls.

Boat trip in Galaxy Grotto: This hidden gem in Ninh Binh is a less-traveled destination that only a handful of organized tours include in their itinerary. Additionally, only a few backpackers know about its existence, and information about it is available on a few travel blogs. However, this location offers the best experience for a sampan boat ride in Ninh Binh, with incredible natural beauty.

Top tourist attractions in Ninh Binh for travelling solo

Ninh Binh itinerary

Boat ride in Tam Coc, Ninh Binh

The entrance fee and the oat trip are 195,000VND or approximately $8; you can enjoy sightseeing by relaxing on a 1.5-hour boat ride (with two foreigners sharing a boat) on the river in Tam Coc. May is the perfect time to experience this boat ride, as the vibrant yellow color of the rice paddies creates a breathtaking backdrop for amazing photoshoots. After the boat ride, consider taking a 20-minute walk along the pathway to Thai Vy temple instead of returning to the pier.

Trang An – The best place for a boat trip in Ninh Binh

Trang An boat trip, Ninh Binh

Trang An boat trip

Trang An, a UNESCO heritage site, and embark on a 2.5-hour boat ride to marvel at the breathtaking views of karst mountains, caves, temples, and more. You have the option to select one of the three available routes. I recommend route 3, which allows you to traverse the longest cave in the Trang An area. The entrance fee is 250k VND per person.

Van Long Nature Reserve – Ninh Binh’s King Kong Territory

Van Long nature reserve

Covering an area of 3,500 hectares, Van Long is widely recognized as the most extensive wetland nature reserve in Northern Vietnam, housing thousands of animal and plant species. Notably, the account is home to the endangered Delacour langurs. This hidden gem offers a unique opportunity for a sampan boat ride off the beaten path in the Ninh Binh area.

Galaxy Grotto ( Dong Thien Ha)

If you seek a distinct landscape unlike Tam Coc or Trang An, consider visiting a less-visited cave in Ninh Binh. Begin your adventure by taking a peaceful boat ride down the river and a short walk to the main cave. Inside, you will be awestruck by the incredible rock formations in various shapes and colors reminiscent of a galactic scene. A few steps upwards lead you to a heavenly open space where the earth and the sky seem to meet. You may also come across some prehistoric artifacts from inhabitants living in the cave between 1500 and 7000 years ago.

Afterward, continue your journey by taking another boat ride to explore the other part of the cave. Here’s a secret: try tapping on the different rocks, and you will be surprised to hear various sounds that each one produces. This is a hidden gem that not many travel blogs have mentioned.

Thung Nham bird park

Thung Nham bird park

Thung Nham is a must-visit destination for those seeking to immerse themselves in nature’s beauty. Here, you can bask in the breathtaking panoramic views of the verdant landscape, marvel at the stunning caves, and gaze upon the majestic limestone mountains.

Bird-watching lovers will be thrilled that Thung Nham is also an excellent spot. It is best to visit the area at 5:00 pm when the birds return from their daily adventures to glimpse the diverse bird species.

Widely known as the ancient capital of Vietnam from the 10th century under the rule of the Dinh and Le dynasties (968-1009), it offers a glimpse into the country’s rich history through its temples and walkways. Visitors can explore two historical temples that honor the respective kings: Dinh and Le, each showcasing unique architectural styles and designs that date back to the 17th century.

Bai Dinh pagoda - Ninh Binh itinerary

Paroramic view of Bai Dinh pagoda complex

Situated in Gia Sinh Commune, Gia Vien District, in the northern province of Ninh Binh, Bai Dinh is nestled behind a range of limestone mountains just 4 miles northwest of the Hoa Lu ancient capital . Considered one of the most significant attractions of the Trang An eco-tourism complex, Bai Dinh Pagoda is a collection of Buddhist architectural structures that includes the grand and majestic temples of the newly-constructed Bai Dinh Pagoda area, juxtaposed with revered and ancient shrines from the old Bai Dinh Pagoda area.

From the ticket booth, you need to take an electric car ride for 10 minutes and take a walk via stone steps to reach its top; there’s a lot to see along the way, including Five hundred Arhat statues, Phap Chu temple, Tam The temple (Three Period), the 13-floor Bell Tower – worth visiting with a fantastic panoramic view of the pagoda complex.

Where to eat for solo travellers in Ninh Binh

Ninh Binh’s food is fantastic, with different types of delicious dishes. Here is the list of must-try Hanoi cuisine

Thit De Nui – Mountain Goat Meat

Mountain goat meat is a delicacy in Vietnam, but Ninh Binh is a premier destination for dishes made with the finest mountain goats. Ninh Binh goat meat is a must-try dish in Ninh Binh.

What sets Ninh Binh goat meat apart is the unique method of breeding. Unlike other regions, goats here are not confined to shelters but can roam freely in the mountains. The goats climb steep and treacherous terrain, resulting in firm, lean meat.

The high quality of goat meat is also attributed to their natural diet of herbs, including many valuable medicinal plants.

Where to try mountain goat meat in Ninh Binh

  • Xuan Vinh Quan

The only thing about these local restaurants above is that their toilets aren’t spotless, sometimes you need to wait for the table to be clean because they are usually busy at the weekend.

Cơm cháy, a traditional Vietnamese dish and a specialty of Ninh Binh, is made from steamed rice sliced into flat, round shapes. The critical ingredient is Huong rice, a glutinous rice variety with rounded, pure grains. The rice is sun-dried multiple times and stored in a cool, dark place to preserve its flavor and prevent mold growth.

Once dried, the rice slices are fried in hot oil until crispy. Cơm cháy is commonly served with various types of meat, including goat, beef, pig’s heart, carrots, and mushrooms.

How to take a Hanoi to Ninh Binh day trip

Just under two hours’ drive from Hanoi, you can choose to visit Ninh Binh as an organised return day trip or do it yourself.

Ninh Binh day tours

For under €50, a full day tour to Ninh Binh will include return travel and all your transport in the region – something that’s useful as the attractions are spread across the countryside. It will also include entrance fees, guides and lunch. You’ll be picked up and dropped at your accommodation and travel from Hanoi to Ninh Binh by minibus, arriving by mid-morning. Handy! The classic tour is the Tam Coc, Hoa Lu and Mua Caves tour or, for a lesser-visited rowing boat experience, try the Trang An tour . Browse all Ninh Binh tours here .

After your Hanoi day trip to Ninh Binh, use my Hanoi itinerary to explore Vietnam’s vibrant capital!

Self-travel to Ninh Binh

Ninh Binh is well placed on the Southeast Asia backpacking route . If you’re travelling north through Vietnam, you can visit Ninh Binh en route to Hanoi, and if you’re travelling south, you can visit before Phong Nha , Hue or Hoi An . Local buses start at $5. You can do a Hanoi to Ninh Binh day trip by bus but you’d leave early and return late so, if visiting without a tour, consider staying over. There are plenty of accommodation options in Ninh Binh including hotels and hostels .

Getting from Ninh Binh to Hanoi by bus

To get from Ninh Binh to Hanoi by bus, book in any travel agent in either city or with 12go , a ridiculously useful website for travel in Southeast Asia. If you have already purchased a book of tourist bus tickets for the sleeper bus up the coast, the service will pick you up near your accommodation for the Ninh Binh to Hanoi leg.

How to get around Ninh Binh

All the key things to do in Ninh Binh are spread across the countryside. If you are visiting independently, you can either hire a scooter or go on the back of a guide’s. If you opt for the latter, they’ll likely have some ideas for a set route but you can also tell them what you’d like to do.

Best to visit during a Ninh Binh day trip

Let’s get stuck into the attractions and how to see them during a day trip. Assuming you have one day in Ninh Binh, I would suggest…

Morning – cruise the waters at Tam Coc

Tam Coc Hanoi to Ninh Binh day trip

Ninh Binh day tours call at Tam Coc, the most iconic place in the region. The distinctive cliffs that jut up out of the countryside are often called ‘Ha Long Bay on land’ and are synonymous with the region. When you arrive at Tam Coc, a fleet of boats will be ready to take you on a 1.5-hour expedition along the waterways and through a series of caves. Entrance fee:  120,000 VND National Park fee per person and 150,000 VND per boat (up to 2 foreigners per boat). Top tip:  Pair up in the boats to save money and split the 150,000 VND. If you’re travelling solo, hang around at the entrance for a few minutes and you’re bound to find someone to share.

Explore Bich Dong Pagoda

Bich Dong Pagoda

Nestled in the jungle in front of a sea of lily pads, Bich Dong is incredibly scenic. When I returned 2.5 years after my first trip I felt like I was revisiting the most perfect dream! This arch is the first thing you see on arriving, but walk over the bridge and you’ll find a series of stunning cave pagodas. Entrance fee: free, but you’ll pay 20,000 VND to park your scooter.

Climb to the Mau Caves viewpoint

Mau Caves

Another stop for your Ninh Binh day trip is Mau Caves. From this incredible vantage point, you can see for miles around. My favourite part was the fantastic aerial view of boats cruising through Tam Coc. There are 500 steep steps to get up but they are plenty of distractions along the way, like this colourful dragon statue. The Mau Caves have to be the best place in Ninh Binh to get a lay of the land and views over the area. Entrance fee:  100,000 VND per person. Top tip:  Keep hydrated if it’s hot! If you don’t have a hat, pick up the local rice ones the Vietnamese people wear – a lady sold me one near the entrance for 30,000 VND. This is standard advice for exertion in the heat but I found the Mau Caves particularly exhausting on a summer’s day and think I got a small dose of heatstroke.

Got extra days in Ninh Binh?

After your day trip to Ninh Binh, why not stay overnight to see more of the region? With an extra day, you can see more of the countryside as well as some impressive temples.

Day 2 morning – Trang An

If you search for things to do in Ninh Binh, you might see Trang An mentioned. This is known as the Tam Coc alternative as it’s slightly lesser-visited, only declared a UNESCO site in 2014. It’s another place to row through the craggy cliffs. If you just have 1 day to see Ninh Binh, consider taking a Trang An tour rather than the Tam Coc alternative.

Day 2 afternoon – Bai Dinh

Bai Dinh Temple Ninh Binh day tour

The biggest pagoda in Vietnam is a 30-minute drive from Ninh Binh centre. Don’t expect an ancient temple (it was built in 2003) but do expect some impressive monuments, Buddha statues and a giant bell tower. Entrance fee: 30,000 VND plus parking.

Unlike the new and shiny Bai Dinh, this ancient site dates back to the 11th century. It was the ancient capital of the Dinh and Le dynasties but now it’s fairly crumbled. It’s not the most impressive temple but if you hire a tour guide to show you around, you’ll pick up some facts about its rich history. Entrance fee: 20,000 VND.

3 day Ninh Binh itinerary – Cuc Phuong National Park

Cuc Phuong National Park

When I visited Ninh Binh in 2015 I visited Cuc Phuong National Park which is 45km from Ninh Binh. Here you can do some trekking in the forest and see the 1,000-year-old tree. I wouldn’t say this was the highlight of Ninh Binh for me but it was a nice day trip and worth it alone for the views of the countryside and rice paddies along the way. The drive from Ninh Binh to the park is 1 hour 45 minutes. Hire a scooter (usually 100,000 VND for the day) or a scooter driver for around 250,000 VND.

Where to stay in Ninh Binh

You have two options when deciding where to stay during your Ninh Binh i tinerary: the city or the countryside. We stayed at Hoa Lu Family Stay in the city which is a friendly family run guesthouse with private rooms from $11 a night and dorm rooms from $4. There’s also a bar, garden and terrace, plus the family will lend you bikes to help you get around. There are plenty of hostels and homestays out in the country for similar prices. Trang An Eco Homestay has beautiful surroundings where you can relax and soak up the countryside, though you’ll be stranded without a scooter (you can hire one there).

Where to eat in Ninh Binh

Bahn xeo food

If you have time, finish your Hanoi to Ninh Binh day trip with a hearty meal. Pictured above is an amazing spread of bahn xeo (Vietnamese omelette with beansprouts) and fresh spring rolls with pork and veg which we rolled ourselves. We paid 30,000 VND including drinks! I forget the name of the restaurant but you’ll find similar ones everywhere. If you’re craving a Western feed, Chookie’s is where it’s at. Main dish prices are about 100,000 VND and you can get oozy bacon cheeseburgers or healthy food like avocado and falafel salad. We all need a pho break sometimes, right?!

What’s such a great article. In my opinion, Galaxy grotto is a great off-the-beaten-track destination which is less-known among travellers. You can take a sampan boat ride from Galaxy grotto to Thung Nham bird garden

10 Best Things To Do In Ninh Binh, Vietnam + 2 Day Itinerary

The Ninh Binh Province is without a doubt one of the most memorable stops on the South East Asia travelers route. This guide will tell you everything you need to know including the best things to do in Ninh Binh as well as show you a 2 day itinerary.

Ninh Binh was once widely regarded as Vietnam’s hidden gem. However, pandora’s box has opened and the secret is officially out.

Our goal is to help you make the most of your time in this stunning rural paradise as well as help you decide how to spend your days in this authentic slice of Vietnam.

In this guide, we will show you:

  • Where is Ninh Binh in Vietnam
  • How to get to Ninh Binh with transport options
  • The 10 best things to do in Ninh Binh
  • An example 2 day itinerary
  • Popular tours options for the area
  • Where to stay in Ninh Binh and interactive map

Let’s explore the best things to do in Ninh Binh, Vietnam!

Where Is Ninh Binh, Vietnam?

Ninh Binh is a small town located in Northern Vietnam’s Red River Delta, around 93km (58 miles) directly South of Hanoi.

Walk roughly 40km (25 miles) to the East and you’ll find the Gulf of Tonkin, the Northern part of the South China Sea. Head west for approximately 150km (93 miles) and you would cross into Laos.

Did you know that Ninh Binh, Vietnam has been dubbed ‘ The Halong Bay On Land ?’ You are truly in for a treat when you visit this gorgeous paradise.

Imagine towering limestone karsts enveloped in emerald green vegetation erupt out of waterlogged rice paddies and rivers carve through valleys of karsts as local farmers grow crops at their banks.

Many tourists base themselves in the town of Ninh Binh or nearby Tam Coc in order to explore the surrounding rural regions of Vietnam which are still relatively unspoiled.

But the nomenclature around this area can be quite confusing because the town of Ninh Binh also acts as the capital city of the entire Ninh Binh province.

There is not much to do in the immediate town of Ninh Binh and this quaint town is often used as a springboard to visit popular areas of Tam Coc, Hoa Lu and Van Long.

So when people are talking about Ninh Binh, they are usually referring to the entire Ninh Binh district.

Over the past several years, Tam Coc in Ninh Binh Province began welcoming an increased numbers of tourists and almost everyone traveling Vietnam will say Ninh Binh was one of their favorite places.

Personally, we thought Ninh Binh was substantially more beautiful and far less like tourist conveyor belt than Halong Bay. Not to mention, you can visit at a fraction of the price.

How To Get To Ninh Binh Province In Vietnam

Unfortunately, Ninh Binh does not have its own regional airport. However, Hanoi international airport is only 127km (79 miles) away.

There are a few different ways you can get to Ninh Binh. Most travelers will spend a few days in Hanoi before jumping on a train or bus to Ninh Binh.

The easiest and most popular way to get to Ninh Binh is by bus, but we will go over all of your options.

Alternatively, you could book a round-trip Hanoi to Ninh Binh private vehicle if you want to travel in comfort.

Flights To Ninh Binh

Fly into Hanoi if you are traveling to Vietnam internationally. Moreover, even if you are in Southern Vietnam, there are no closer regional airports than Hanoi so Hanoi is still your best bet.

Once you are in Hanoi, you can easily make your way to the Ninh Binh province.

We always use Skyscanner to find great deals on flights.

Trains To Ninh Binh

Trains are a cost effective and extremely efficient way to travel in Vietnam. Why? Because there is one train at a time, running on one track and in one direction.

If you have ever traveled by bus, moped or car in Vietnam, you will completely understand wanting to avoid the carnage we are talking about.

Although, there aren’t always direct trains running to tourist hotspots such as adventure cave town Phong Nha and trekking haven Sapa .

However, Ninh Binh is incredibly easy to access by train, either from Hanoi in the North or from any of the big cities in the the center and southern portions of the country.

Sleeper Bus To Ninh Binh

Ahh the joys of the Vietnam sleeper bus. It’s a rite of passage as a traveler in Vietnam. If you haven’t experienced one, we recommend you try at least one during your time in Vietnam.

Traveling down from Hanoi or even Halong Bay as we did?

You won’t need a sleeper bus, just a normal day time bus that will take a few hours. Our bus Halong Bay to Ninh Binh was 2 hours late setting off and took around 4 (hair raising) hours to arrive in Tam Coc directly.

Heading up from Hue, Hoi An or Phong Nha?

Check 12Go Asia below to see availability, times and prices for sleeper buses or sleeper trains. If you plump for the bus, we would strongly advise booking a sleeper bus online before you travel. They are much better than locally organized buses on the day, trust us.

10 Best Things To Do In Ninh Binh, Vietnam

Ninh Binh Province is jam packed full of beautiful scenery. You can visit 300 year old pagodas built into caves, summit a viewpoint with a breathtaking 360 degree panoramic view and glide by boat among limestone mountains.

But there is so much more to see than just the typical ‘touristy’ attractions.

Simply cycling on a narrow lane cutting through a rice paddy field with a river to your left and a limestone mountain randomly sprouting up to your right is enough to fall in love with nature in Ninh Binh Province.

Let’s take a look at the best things to do on your Ninh Binh itinerary:

wooden boats leaving dock heading upriver

1. Trang An Boat Tour

  • Trang An Boat Departure Boat Address : 7W39+7G5, Ninh Xuân, Hoa Lư, Ninh Bình, Vietnam
  • Google Maps Location For The Trang An Boat tour .
  • Opening Hours : 7:00am-4:00pm daily
  • Price : 250,000 VND / person (about $10)
  • Time Required: Tours last around 3 hours plus go through 7–9 caves
  • Recent Reviews : Tripadvisor

We begin with the most popular and top rated ‘thing to do’ on this Ninh Binh itinerary. Throughout the Trang An Boat tour, you will float through a series of dark caves with low hanging ceilings and intriguing geological features.

At the end of each cave, you slowly glide out into a new scene filled with impressive limestone rocks dominating the terrain.

Remember we mentioned pandora’s box being opened in Ninh Binh? Imagine 2 hands opening the box. In the left hand, we have UNESCO declaring the Trang An Complex a World Heritage Site in the year 2014.

And in the right hand is Hollywood filming blockbuster, Kong: Skull Island , among the limestone karsts and waterways of the complex.

The Trang An Complex has some serious accolades just by merit alone.

As the tour continues, your helmsman will steer the boat expertly around beautiful landscapes that are the reason Ninh Binh has been dubbed as ‘Halong Bay On Land’.

You will be amazed by unrivaled serenity and tranquility as you sit back and simply enjoy Mother Nature at her finest.

There are a number of stop off points where you can leave the boat to explore small islands with Buddhist temples and shrines to discover.

Due to Trang An’s UNESCO status, the complex is regulated, therefore you will find no scams, even when it comes to parking which is a relief.

Considering a Trang An Boat tour? Don’t miss our Ultimate Guide to the Serene Trang An Boat Tour to learn everything you need to know prior to visiting.

2. Mua Cave Viewpoint

  • Mua Cave Viewpoint Address : Thôn Khê Đầu Hạ, Hoa Lư, Ninh Bình, Vietnam
  • Mua Cave Viewpoint Google Maps Location .
  • Opening Hours : 6:00am-7:00pm daily
  • Price : 100,000 VND / person (about $4)
  • Time Required: Between 2-3 hours

Although the Trang An Boat tour is the most popular attraction, that doesn’t mean it’s the best one.

For us, the incredible 360 degree panoramic vista from the Mua Cave Viewpoint was the peak of our Ninh Binh adventure.

You will have to walk 500 steps up an ancient looking stone staircase to reach the summit, but the majestic views are worth your effort.

However, this viewpoint is certainly not for the faint hearted. When you combine the heat and the humidity, the 500 steps can seem endless.

But once you reach the top, you will forget about the unbearable humidity and your own exhaustion once you feast your eyes on the valleys around you.

Look West and you will see the Ngo Dong River flowing through a range of limestone mountains wrapped in deep green vegetation. The river will be dotted with wooden boats and farmers tending to their rice crops on the river banks.

To the East, you have views over a lower viewpoint at Mua Cave, plus in the distance you can see industrial Ninh Binh city.

Don’t forget to snap a photo with the stone dragon statue at the summit, with its long meandering tail. Be careful on the sharp rocks and you should know there will probably be a line to get a photo with this guy.

A Word Of Advice For Parking

Scammers are at work as you arrive at the Mua Cave trailhead. They will try to make you park your bicycle or motorbike in their paid parking lots, but do not stop for any of them .

Unfortunately, we experienced one man who was quite aggressive and almost pushed us off our moped. Some might even be dressed in police uniforms blowing whistles at you, but don’t be alarmed.

The trick is to ignore all the commotion and continue on to the end of the road. You can park for 10,000 VND at the Mua Cave Ecolodge, right at the entrance to the Mua Caves Viewpoint.

Planning to visit Mua Cave Viewpoint? Read our popular guide to the visiting the Mua Cave Viewpoint to make the most of your trip.

3. Bich Dong Pagoda

  • Bich Dong Pagoda Address : 6W99+C23, Ninh Hải, Hoa Lư, Ninh Bình 430000, Vietnam
  • Bich Dong Pagoda Google Maps Location .
  • Opening Hours : No set opening hours
  • Price : Free

The Bich Dong Pagoda is a three-tiered temple half built inside a cave. But the name does not do the entire complex justice.

As you arrive, you will be welcomed by a lake filled with lotus flowers and if you time it right for Summer, the flowers will be in bloom.

Splitting the lake into two is a narrow stone path with a gorgeous arch, leading to a beautiful triple arched stone entrance gate.

Don’t forget to check out the grounds to discover plants, statues and even butterflies before you begin climbing the stairs.

The pagoda is built into a cave that is recessed into a huge looming limestone rock. On the second level, there is a also temple built into the rock.

You will need to take a narrow passage to the left and enter the cave. Follow the cave to a staircase and on the third tier you will leave the cave to overlook views of entrance lake.

Please note you will have to pay a small fee to park your bicycle or motorbike. Don’t pay any more than 10,000 VND. The locals might try to be cheeky and get 20,000 VND or more from you.

Do you think you have seen this whole area? You haven’t! There is a BONUS area that not many people know about.

Let’s say there were around 100 tourists exploring Bich Dong Pagoda and only 4 others (6 including us) found the secret area.

Planning to visit Bich Dong? Don’t miss our detailed walkthrough to the stunning Bich Dong Pagoda including a secret cave tour.

4. Hoa Lu Ancient Capital

  • Hoa Lu Ancient Capital Address : Trường Yên, Hoa Lư District, Ninh Bình, Vietnam
  • Hoa Lu Ancient Capital Google Maps Location .
  • Opening Hours : 7:00am-5:00pm
  • Price : 20,000 VND per person (about $1)
  • Time Required: 1 hours max

One of the major tourism draws to the Ninh Binh province is Vietnam’s first capital, Hoa Lu.

Three miles to the North of Trang An is where you will find the remnants of 1,000 year old Vietnamese history. Hoa Lu was the ancient capital of Vietnam in the 10th and 11th centuries, before the capitol was moved to Hanoi.

You will need to cross a modern looking bridge and enter through a triple arched entrance gate to access the grounds. Not much remains from the ancient dynasties, but there are several temples and pagodas.

It won’t take long to walk around and grab a few photos.

Heading to Hanoi? You might like our guide featuring the best things to do in Hanoi as well as a 2 day Hanoi itinerary.

Tam Coc boat tour on Ninh Binh itinerary boats leaving dock

5. Tam Coc Boat Tour

  • Tam Coc Boat Tour Address :
  • Opening Hours : 8:00am-6:00pm
  • Price : 270,000+ VND ($11 and up)
  • Time Required: 2.5 hours plus 3 caves

We must start by mentioning that we didn’t go on the Tam Coc boat tour ourselves. Although, reading about certain incidents on the Tam Coc boat tour added a little hesitation.

Some of the guides have been known to stop the tour in the middle of the river and demand a tip before they continue.

You will also have to pay separately for the boat as well as for actual entry:

  • Tam Coc Boat ticket : 150,000 VND / boat (max 2 persons)
  • Adult Entry : 120,000 VND / person
  • Child Entry : 60,000 VND / person

In addition, the lack of a UNESCO designation means the guides don’t have to abide by any regulations. So after careful consideration, we decided to go for the Trang An Boat tour.

However, we did run into many people during our time in Vietnam who experienced a lovely Tam Coc boat tour.

There is one particular section of the Tam Coc boat trip that looks stunning. It is the same segment you can see from the summit of Mua Cave Viewpoint, where the boats pass through the limestone valley.

The major benefit is this tour begins and ends bang smack in the center of Tam Coc, making it oh so convenient. No effort is required to get on this boat ride.

Perfect for those running low on time, waiting for a bus or don’t fancy cycling or driving out to Trang An. But this tour will still have amazing views because you are in Ninh Binh after all.

Before picking a boat tour, we would highly recommend you read recent reviews and go with your gut feeling.

Pizza at chookies beer garden Tam Coc Ninh Binh itinerary

6. Hang Out At Chookie’s

While Chookie’s Beer Garden isn’t your typical Vietnamese food option, this restaurant has a wonderful atmosphere. You can also find Wifi here if needed which is how we originally stumbled on the place.

Serving American, Australian, European as well as Vegetarian friendly and pizza options, there is something for everyone here at this beer garden.

Out of all the restaurants we experienced in Vietnam, Chookie’s always remained high on our list just because of the wonderful vibe and the great service.

Not to mention they make a sublime pizza, in a bona fide pizza oven. Try the pepperoni or bolognese pizza for lunch! The only downside? It’s not exactly budget friendly compared to other options.

7. Try The Local Vietnamese Food

If you are a foodie, we suggest you skip Chookie’s and head for some of the local options. In addition to the stunning landscapes, Ninh Binh is known for a few specialty food dishes you might want to try.

Mountain Snail

This mountain snail is native to the limestone mountains of Ninh Binh and only comes out for food during the rainy season from April to August.

You can expect the mountain snail to be hard with a sweet taste and it can be cooked in many different ways.

Mountain Snail Price Range:   80,000 VND – 100,000 VND

Fresh Goat Meat With Lemon

Expect to find the best goat meat in Hoa Lu, Ninh Binh because the limestone mountains and the weather are the perfect combination for raising goats.

The goat meat from this area is prepared in a special way with this tradition passing from generation to generation.

Fresh Goat Meat Price Range: 100,000 VND – 300,000 VND

Burned Rice (Cơm Cháy)

This crispy dish is made by cooking the rice and then slicing into many round shaped pieces. Once cooled, these pieces are placed in a pan of hot oil until yellow.

Cơm Cháy has a crispy texture and is often served with onion leaves, chilly and pork meat.

Burned Rice Price Range: 35,000 VND – 45,000 VND

Eel Vermicelli Noodle

The main ingredient in this dish is eel and the chef carefully selects an eel which has a pinkish-brown back with a dark yellow belly. It’s important to find high quality eel and selection requires experience.

A plate of fresh vegetables always accompanies this popular Ninh Binh dish.

Eel Vermicelli Noodle Price Range: 30,000 VND – 35,000 VND

8. Relax At A Local Homestay

If you are looking for the ultimate relaxation, we would recommend you consider a homestay during your time in the Ninh Binh province.

These homestays consistently have insanely high guest satisfaction ratings and the best part is you can find an option for every price range.

  • Ninh Binh Greenland Homestay – Exceptionally rated with restaurant, free bikes, an outdoor swimming pool and a bar.
  • Tam Coc Friendly Homestay – Restaurant, a 24-hour front desk, bar, garden, year-round outdoor pool and children’s playground.
  • Lys Homestay – Restaurant, a 24-hour front desk, bar, garden, year-round outdoor pool, terrace and some units feature mountain views.

9. Cuc Phuong National Park

Cuc Phuong is the largest and oldest national park in Vietnam spanning three provinces of Ninh Binh, Hoa Binh and Thanh Hoa.

In 1960, this area was classified as a forest reserve and then officially designated Cuc Phuong National Park in 1962 by President Ho Chi Minh.

This park features limestones mountains rising from lush green rice-terraces as well as traditional stilt houses of the Muong hill-tribe.

The tropical forest landscape is home to almost 2,000 species of trees as well as some of Asia’s rarest animals including the clouded leopard, Delacour’s langur, Owston’s civet and Asian black bears.

Visitors can explore the park almost any time of year, but it is best to avoid the rainy season from July to September. April and early-May are an extremely popular time to visit due to the thousands of vibrant butterflies.

There are many things to do at Cuc Phuong National Park including:

  • The Visitor Center
  • Cuc Phuong Botanical Garden
  • Endangered Primate Rescue Center
  • Turtle Conservation Center

Depending on how much time you plan to spend in the area, you can adjust your time here as needed.

10. Explore More Temples And Pagodas

Numbers 1 through 9 on this list are the main attractions for the Ninh Binh Province, but if you find you have more time, there is so much more to explore in this beautiful area.

  • Bai Dinh Pagoda – This pagoda features a complex of Buddhist temples on Bai Dinh Mountain with both an old temple as well as a large newer temple.
  • Van Long Wetland Nature Reserve – Limestone karsts are surrounded by a freshwater lake, marsh and swamps in one of the few lowland inland wetlands remaining in the Hong River Delta.
  • Phat Diem Cathedral – Built in stone and wood during 1891, this cathedral is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phát Diệm.
  • Thai Vi Temple – A beautiful temple surrounded by mountains dating back to the 13th century.

2 Day Ninh Binh Itinerary

We think an action packed 2 day itinerary is the perfect way to explore Ninh Binh. No doubt you have a lot more of Vietnam to see and an approaching expiration date on your visa.

Having visited ourselves, we are going to recommend the itinerary for Ninh Binh the way we would have done it had we been given this information first.

Geographically, this itinerary will seem illogical, but this is the best way to see the best parts of the Ninh Binh province.

However, for the best experience possible, this is the most efficient and effective way to see the best sights in Ninh Binh. We will assume that Tam Coc will be your base for the 2 days.

This itinerary is easily completed as a DIY option, but consider a tour if you want someone else to take care of the transportation aspect for you. We will list popular Ninh Binh tour options after the itinerary.

wooden boats going inside cave tunnel Ninh Binh

Day 1 Ninh Binh Itinerary – Morning

Hopefully you don’t mind early starts because this is the best way to beat the crowds at the Trang An Boat tour . You want to arrive as easily as possible.

Be the first person there at 7am. Why on earth would we ask you to do that? Because you will feel like you have been transported to another world, completely alone.

Imagine floating around giant limestone rocks as the deep violet sky begins to glow with orange hues in the early hours of dawn. A misty morning would enhance the eeriness.

There would be minimal boats out with you, giving a feeling of solitary isolation in a fascinating environment. If you wait until later in the day, you will join the hundreds of other tourists with the same idea.

We arrived at 9am and it was less busy than expected, but it fills up fast so we recommend to start your day early. In hindsight, we would have arrived at 7am.

Once you leave the boat tour, head further North to Hoa Lu Ancient Capital and pay to park just where the bridge begins. This is a good time to spend an hour walking around the temples and Outer Citadel area.

Head Back to Tam Coc passing by the entrance to Mua Cave Viewpoint. You want to save this for next morning, trust us.

Stop by Chookies and enjoy a delicious lunch.

Day 1 Ninh Binh Itinerary – Afternoon

You could continue on the motorbike, but we would suggest you ditch the engine and use your legs instead.

Grab a bicycle from your hotel and cycle the 3km (2 miles) from Tam Coc to Bich Dong Pagoda . It’s a lovely scenic ride and you’re doing your tiny bit for the environment.

Hopefully, the tour buses will have thinned out by the afternoon. You’ll need around 2-3 hours to explore the three tiers, grounds and include that fantastic BONUS area that you can find out about in our Bich Dong Pagoda article . This is a lovely place so take your time.

Once back in town, pick a restaurant that we mentioned earlier on this guide, order some local food and relax with a beer.

Day 2 Ninh Binh Itinerary – Morning

Sorry to do this to you, but it’s another early start.

This one is definitely worth making that extra effort to get out of bed for. Jump back on your motorbike and try to arrive at Mua Cave trailhead for 6am (or as close as possible).

Three reasons why you should consider an early start:

  • There won’t be as many scammers on the entrance road this early
  • You may have the entire mountain to yourself at sunrise
  • The heat and humidity will be much better at this time of day

As you can see, there are some pretty serious pros to getting up early, particularly 2 and 3. When we go back to Vietnam, we will without question be arriving to Mua Cave at 6am.

We arrived at 2:30pm thinking we’d take our time and summit just before sunset. A good idea in principle, right? Well it didn’t exactly turn out how we had planned.

Firstly, the climb was horrendous because of Vietnam’s inescapably high relative humidity and our poor decision to climb at the hottest part of the day. Secondly, it was extremely crowded at the top for sunset.

That’s why we suggest giving it a miss the evening before and making the effort to come back up on the second morning of the 2 day itinerary for Ninh Binh.

Tam Coc boat tour boats tied together in flower shape

Day 2 Ninh Binh Itinerary – Afternoon

Choose somewhere local or head back to Chookie’s for lunch. Then you have a decision to make.

You could take an easy stroll over to the Tam Coc boat dock . A late afternoon of gliding through golden or green rice paddies will be the perfect way to end your second day.

You’ve already done an early morning boat ride just after sunrise, this time head out for a sunset.

Or you could visit one of the other temples we mentioned above as well as Cuc Phuong National Park during this time in the afternoon.

Day 2 Ninh Binh Itinerary – Optional Tour

Most of the places listed on this Ninh Binh itinerary will require you to either bike or drive a moped. If you aren’t comfortable with this type of transport, you could consider a tour to help check off the top sights in Ninh Binh.

There is no right or wrong way to experience this part of Vietnam. If you are interested in booking a tour, check out some of the top rated tours below.

On another note, Ninh Binh is a great place to learn to ride a moped. During our trip, this is where Kristen learned to drive a moped so we could each complete the Hai Van Pass on our own bikes .

If you are thinking about taking a motorcycle tour during your time in Vietnam, use your time in Ninh Binh to get comfortable with driving a moped.
