Uluwatu Bali Guide: 20 Top Things To Do & See

Uluwatu is a scenic, hilly area in the southwest corner of Bali’s Bukit Peninsula. It’s named for a famous temple perched on the cliffs, but there are lots of other things to do in Uluwatu Bali than just see the temple!

This area is known for its blue waves, white sand beaches, impressive sea cliffs, quality surfing, and fancy beach clubs.

There’s something for everyone here, and you can reach the Uluwatu area in about 1 hour of driving from Kuta, Canggu, and the other popular tourist hotspots in Bali Indonesia.

We’ve visited Uluwatu and the Bukit Peninsula many times over the years, but it seems like we’re always discovering new things to do and see here.

How To Get Around Uluwatu Bali

The Uluwatu area is big and spread out, so if you want to go exploring all the beaches and such, then you’ll need transportation.

The main way to get around Uluwatu is to rent a scooter or hire a private car and driver (both of these can be booked online). Airport transfers to Uluwatu from the Bali airport can also be arranged with your hotel or booked online .

Ride-hailing apps like Grab and Go-Jek can be used for short taxi rides around Uluwatu Bali, but since it’s such a spread out area there aren’t a lot of drivers available. Hopefully that’ll change in the future.

Top Things To Do In Uluwatu Bali

1. uluwatu temple.

Of course you have to start your Uluwatu travels by visiting the epic 1,000 year old temple that gave this area its name!

Uluwatu Temple sits on the edge of a big sea cliff and it’s one of the most popular places to watch the sunset in Bali, Indonesia.

Hide your sunglasses! The monkeys at this temple are known for trying to snatch anything they can.

2. Bingin Beach

Bingin is a photogenic beach with exotic boulders and seaweed covered rocks. It’s great for photos or surfing, and it’s less crowded than some of the other beaches in the area.

There’s a bit of trash and rubble lately from hotel construction, but some high quality accommodation and restaurants are starting to spring up here.

3. Pemutih Beach

Pantai Pemutih is a popular surfing spot with some cliffside hotels and a small (but nice) white sand beach.

Not too many people seem to know about this beach, which makes it that much better. If you want to stay directly on the beach, check out Rock N Reef Hotel Uluwatu !

4. Padang Padang Beach

This is a neat little beach tucked into the cliffs. To get to it, you have to squeeze through a narrow passage in the rocks and then walk down some steps.

Padang Padang is a popular spot for surfing, or you can just sip a fresh coconut and hang out on the white sand with the monkeys.

5. Balangan Beach

This is a nice free beach with white sand and blue waves. Like many beaches in Uluwatu, it’s a great spot for sunset.

Balangan Beach is also popular for prewedding photoshoots because of the cliff above the beach, where you can get amazing views of the ocean scenery and the whole coastline.

It’s still fairly quiet here and not too commercial. You can access the beach by going down some stairs, and there are two parking areas — one for the beach, and one on the cliff above it.

6. Thomas Beach

This is one of Bali’s nicest beaches, and chilling here is one of our favorite things to do in Uluwatu. It has a long strip of white sand scattered with boulders, and not too many people.

7. Suluban Beach

Suluban is a secluded beach with caves and huge rocks to explore, plus surfable waves, but my favorite thing is the restaurant view. This little warung on top of the cliffs has amazing views of the coastline.

We pulled up a chair here and enjoyed some drinks with the scenery, and even got greeted by a monitor lizard sneaking around on the cliffs! It’s an epic place to grab breakfast while exploring Uluwatu Bali.

8. Batu Jaran Hill

This is a huge cliff near Uluwatu Temple, but there are no crowds and no safety fences to block your view of the waves crashing on the rocks below. It’s undoubtedly one of the best things to do near Uluwatu Temple!

You can see the Uluwatu pagoda in the distance, and we even spotted a few sea turtles swimming in the waves. It’s an incredibly photogenic spot that most tourists don’t seem to know about yet.

9. Karang Boma Cliff

This is another steep cliff near Uluwatu, but it’s on the south side of the temple and requires a short walk from a separate parking area.

It’s a great spot for sunset, and you should have the place mostly to yourself. We just discovered this viewpoint recently, but it’s one of our new favorite things to do in Uluwatu!

Karang Boma Cliff

10. Nunggalan Beach

Also called Nyang Nyang, this is one of the longest white sand beaches in south Bali. The walk down and back up is a bit of a killer, but you’re rewarded with a huge private beach and a cool wooden shipwreck for pictures!

11. Melasti Beach

Melasti is a highly developed beach with a road carved into the tall limestone cliffs, giving it a stunning background.

This beach has a long strip of white sand, clean turquoise water, plenty of parking space, and a bunch of different fancy clubs lining the beachfront: Cattamaran , Minoo , and Palmilla . You can also reach Karma Beach Club from here by walking.

Normally I’m not a big fan of seeing once-empty beaches get so developed like this, but I think Melasti was actually done pretty well. There’s sometimes a little bit of trash, but overall it’s surprisingly clean and nice.

12. Green Bowl Beach

Green Bowl is one of my favorite hidden beaches in Uluwatu Bali.

It may not be a very big beach, and the steep walk down is tiring, but the white sand is nice and soft.

Surfers come to Green Bowl for the waves, and there are two caves to explore on the beach.

13. Gunung Payung Beach

This is a hidden beach overlooked by cliffs and a quiet Hindu temple.

You have to go down a long stairway to reach the beach, but then it’s all yours. If you walk along the coast, there’s even a big sea cave.

Gunung Payung Beach

14. Dreamland Beach

Dreamland has a nice long stretch of white sand lined with sunbeds you can rent.

Sadly this beach has gone a bit downhill in recent years because of trash washing up from the ocean, but hopefully things improve again.

Dreamland Beach

15. Tegal Wangi Beach

Tegal Wangi is a pretty small beach, but it’s still a secret to most Bali tourists, so it’s never crowded.

This beach has two sea caves. The first one is pretty small, but if you keep walking further down the beach there’s a second bigger cave. At low tide, there are also natural pools you can sit and soak in while enjoying the views.

We came here at sunrise, but actually the best time to visit is at sunset. Since the beach is facing west, you’ll have a great view of the sunset from inside the caves!

UPDATE: Tegal Wangi is currently closed to visitors, but hopefully they reopen it soon.

Tegal Wangi Beach

16. Uluwatu Cafes

The Uluwatu area is loaded with hip cafes and restaurants to suit every niche.

Some of our top picks would be Suka Espresso , Nalu Bowls, La Baracca (Italian), Mango Tree (Mexican), and The Loft .

Best Smoothie Bowls In Bali

17. Uluwatu Beach Clubs

The beaches and cliffs around Uluwatu are just perfect for clubs, so naturally it has quite a few of them.

The way these clubs usually work is that you pay an entrance fee (anywhere from 100k to 500k Rupiah), and then you get to use that as a food and beverage credit, plus you get access to a lounge with a pool, sunbeds, and WiFi.

Depending on the club, your view from the lounge could be a nice beachfront, or an infinity pool — or both! Sipping drinks by an infinity pool is a great way to watch the sunset in Uluwatu.

Some good clubs to check out are Ulu Cliffhouse , Sundays Beach Club , Palmilla , El Kabron , and Oneeighty .

Our absolute favorite club for sunset is the Oneeighty cliff pool at The Edge! The pool has a glass bottom and amazing views of the Uluwatu cliffs.

18. Uluwatu Massage & Spa

Practically every third building in Bali is a massage shop, and Uluwatu has plenty of them too.

Balinese massage is fantastic and the prices can be very affordable, at 100k Rupiah ($7 USD) or less for a 1 hour body massage or foot massage.

A few of the highest rated massage places in Uluwatu are Laniakea Spa , Zahra Spa , and OurSpa Uluwatu . These places are terrific and you may need reservations, although honestly you can go to just about any spa in the bukit peninsula and get a good experience.

Many of the high end resorts in Uluwatu also have their own spa and massage centers, which are usually pricey but top notch.

We’ve never had a bad massage anywhere in Bali. It’s the perfect way to unwind after a full day of hiking or touring.

19. Surfing Uluwatu

The Uluwatu area is famous for its world class surfing spots.

There are a bunch of them, but check out Padang Padang or Pemutih Beach for starters. Another popular spot is Dreamland Beach.

20. Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK)

This is a cultural park in the center of the Bukit Peninsula, about 20 minutes from Uluwatu Temple.

It’s used for exhibitions and Balinese cultural events, but most people know it for the giant statues of Hindu figures.

The centerpiece of the park is a statue of the god Vishnu riding the mythical bird Garuda. At 120 meters tall (400 feet), it’s one of the tallest statues in the world.

Things To Do In Uluwatu At Night

There are lots of good things to do in Uluwatu at night.

If you’re looking for a cultural experience, you can catch the sunset at Uluwatu Temple and watch the Balinese ‘Kecak’ (fire dance), otherwise you can head to one of the many beach clubs and cliff bars in the area.

The Uluwatu sunset is legendary in Bali, and there are so many good places to experience it. Check out the Ayana Rock Bar for a romantic dinner by the waves, or Sunset Point Uluwatu for a more budget friendly option.

Is Uluwatu Bali Safe?

Yes, Uluwatu is very safe. It’s generally known as one of the safest areas in Bali, and violent crime is rare in Indonesia in general. Just take normal precautions and you shouldn’t have any issues.

The main thing to watch out for is drive-by phone snatchings, which do happen in some parts of Bali from time to time, so just remember to put away your phone when you’re by a busy road with passing motorbikes.

The glistening white sand and turquoise waters make this beach a must-see location during your visit to Bali.

The easiest way to get down to the beach is via the west entrance because there is a newly constructed road that leads from the top of the cliffs all the way down to the shoreline.

Upon arrival, there is a small ticketing booth where you’ll have to stop and pay an entry fee of 10,000 IDR to access the beach.

I recommend visiting Nyang Nyang Beach earlier in the morning before it gets too hot in the midday sun and you can enjoy a few hours down on the beach to yourself before it gets crowded.

If you do decide to visit Nyang Nyang Beach later in the day, I highly recommend sticking around for sunset which is generally around 6 pm.

You’ll also find a few local beach vendors where you can grab something to eat and drink during your visit.

Green Bowl Beach, also known as Pantai Green Bowl , is one of the most secluded beaches on the east coast of the Bukit.

Perched at the base of verdant cliffs, this beautiful white sand beach surrounded by a coral reef and turquoise waters is not to be missed.

From the parking lot, you will have to descend around 300 concrete steps to reach the shoreline. Going down is the easy part, it’s coming back up that can be unforgiving.

A small patch of glistening white sand, no more than fifty meters long, welcomes you at the bottom of the stairs.

25 Amazing Things To Do In Uluwatu, Bali

Planning a trip around Bali and searching for the best things to do in Uluwatu in 2023? Well, you’ve come to the right place, as I just spent the last 3 months living in the Uluwatu area – and it’s easily my favorite area of Bali!

There’s this really unique and relaxing vibe down there that is hard to explain, but it aligns perfectly with the laid-back surfing culture you’ll encounter while exploring Uluwatu.  There are so many incredible Uluwatu attractions, restaurants, bars, beaches, beach clubs, spas, and hotspots that you could easily spend weeks soaking up the paradise life.

Renting a moto and exploring all the different beaches is a must, but a personal favorite is being constantly amazed at the jaw-dropping sunsets that occur most nights down in Uluwatu!

Things To Do in Uluwatu, Bali

With the relaxing atmosphere, incredible dining options, luxurious beach clubs, and so many other amazing things to do in Uluwatu – I guarantee you’ll fall in love with this Bali destination just as much as I have!

While you could easily spend weeks down in Uluwatu, you really can see and do just about everything here in 3-4 days!  If you’ve been there recently, and have any recommendations you think I need to add to this list – shoot me a message on  Instagram !

Things To Do in Uluwatu

Best Places to Stay in Uluwatu

First things first, let’s talk about accommodation.  You really shouldn’t do Uluwatu just as a day-trip, so please stay down there for a few days to explore everything the south of Bali has to offer!

  • Radisson Blu Bali Uluwatu   (HOTEL)  — This is one of my favorite places to stay (location wise) in Uluwatu! The rooms are luxurious but the prices are pretty affordable, and you’ll be right in the center of everything Uluwatu has to offer.
  • Mu Bungalows   (BOUTIQUE HOTEL) —  I’ve actually mentioned visiting this place on my list of Uluwatu things to do, but it’s also an epic place to stay because it has stunning views from an iconic infinity pool. I first discovered this place as a backpacker back in 2014, and it’s a hotel I’ve returned to many times!
  • Alila Villas Uluwatu   (LUXURY HOTEL) —  If you’re not traveling on a budget, then look no further and book your stay at the Alila Villas! Not much else needs to be said, because it’s a total 5* experience that’ll truly blow your mind.
  • Renaissance Bali Uluwatu Resort & Spa   (MARRIOTT PROPERTY) —  If you’re anything like me, you’ll be loyal to a hotel brand, and I personally love Marriott properties. I stayed here at the Renaissance for 6 weeks, and it’s such a gorgeous property with everything you need for a top-notch vacation experience. It’s a bit of a drive from the downtown Uluwatu area, but well worth it. The breakfast buffet is absolutely incredible!
  • SR Hostel Uluwatu   (HOSTEL)  : If you’re a backpacker on a strict budget in Uluwatu, then look no further than staying here at SR Hostel Uluwatu which has a free buffet dinner every night!!  It’s got everything a backpacker wants: a cheap, clean, comfortable place to sleep, a place where you can meet other backpackers.

Kecak Fire Dance - Uluwatu, Bali Itinerary

Getting Around Uluwatu

If you’re new to traveling around Bali, you’ll quickly learn that renting a scooter is the most common form of transport when exploring different parts of the island!

I’d also say that it’s the BEST place to learn how to drive a scooter in Bali. The roads are well maintained, and while Uluwatu is gaining a lot more visitors than in the past, it’s still not as busy/chaotic as Canggu, Kuta, and Ubud.

Whenever I go to Uluwatu I rent a scooter through Uluwatu Scooter Rental – and they’ve always been amazing to deal with. They’ve even organized hotel drop-0ff/ pick-up services, which makes my travels A LOT easier. Their What’s App Number is: +62 857-9232-8771. They offer great bikes and good rates (even better if you rent for a week/month).

If you don’t feel comfortable driving a scooter in Bali (lots of people prefer to hire cars) — one of the best things to do in Uluwatu is hiring a private-driver for an entire day. It’s super affordable (especially if you’re traveling with a partner or group of friends), and all the drivers in Bali are extremely friendly and knowledgeable. They can help you organize a full-day itinerary of places to go (temples, secluded beaches, clubs, etc), and you can make the most of your time without worrying about driving.

Top 25 Things To Do In Uluwatu

Alright, let’s break down what all my favorite things there are to do and see in the area! Originally when I wrote this article I only had a Top 10 list, but since returning I’ve updated it to include a TON more. While it may be difficult to visit ALL of these places, it’s definitely worth a shot!

1. Visit Uluwatu Temple & Kecak Fire Dance

Uluwatu Temple Cliffs

Exploring this Balinese Hindu sea temple is one of the most amazing Uluwatu things to do and a must-visit! It’s built on the edge of a 230-foot sea cliff, providing tremendous views from the temple of the iconic Uluwatu cliffs. Most of the temple was constructed by Empu Kuturan during the 11th century, so you can be sure there’s plenty of history to learn about.

Don’t be surprised by the number of Macaque monkeys that inhabit not only the cliffs but the temple itself. It’s best to leave all your jewelry at home as these monkeys have a knack for thievery. The monkeys have also learned the skill of bartering, so if your jewelry does happen to get pinched, offering them some fruit may earn you your belongings back.

The Uluwatu Temple does have a small entrance fee of 50,000 Indonesian Rupiah , but it is worth every penny. Enjoy the scenic strolls along the cliffs, marvel at the beautiful temple, and take pictures of the cute by mischievous monkeys.

Uluwatu Temple

My main travel tip for visiting Uluwatu Temple would be to go during sunset, as you’ll get the chance to witness the traditional Kecak Fire Dance . It involves dancing, chanting, elaborate costumes and loads of excitement.

All this takes place in the temple while the setting sun acts as a beautiful backdrop. It’s a cultural experience in Uluwatu not worth missing out on. I’ve done it a couple different times and always enjoy it! For first-time visitors to Bali/Uluwatu – it will absolutely be a highlight!

Uluwatu Temple Kecak Fire Dance

2. Surfers & Sunsets at Pantai Suluban | Uluwatu Beach

The most popular and lively part of Uluwatu is Suluban Beach (most commonly known as Uluwatu Beach), which offers tons of restaurants, bars, and surf shops.

You simply can’t go to Ulutwau without watching the insanely talented surfers from up above from one of the many bars/restaurants.  You’ll be blown away about the size of the waves, but even more blown away by the beautiful sunsets every night.

There are tons of epic viewpoints to choose from, but probably the most popular spot would be  Single Finn  (see below).

Can you spot the Uluwatu Beach surfers down there…?

3. Sunday Sessions at Single Finn Club & Restaurant

There’s arguably no better place to be on Sunday in Bali than at the legendary  Single Finn in Uluwatu ! It’s located at the very top of Suluban Beach, and is the prime spot to watch the talented surfers from above while destroying a delicious meal and cold beer.

As the night progresses, the music gets louder, and the party vibes are seriously amazing! It’s free entry, there’s always a good turnout, and the music tends to be quality house music!

Travelers in Bali all flock down to Uluwatu for the Sunday night parties at Single Finn, and you’re guaranteed to meet a ton of awesome people. The food and drinks are great (albeit a bit pricey for Bali standards).

4. The Istana

The Istana quickly became one of my favorite places to visit in Uluwatu, mainly for their Sauna / Steam Room / Infrared Sauna + Cold Plunge spa experience. It’s such a refreshing and rejuvenating experience that always makes me feel like a million bucks.

It’s also at an absolutely stunning location with panoramic Uluwatu cliff views that will leave you speechless. They also offer a ton of other activities like yoga, guided meditation, cryotherapy, massages, and so much more! It’s become a Uluwatu must-visit in the past couple years!

If you’re wondering what to do in Uluwatu for some relaxation – look no further than the Istana!

5. The Cashew Tree

The Cashew Tree is hands down one my favorite places to eat in Uluwatu! It’s located really close to Bingin beach, so you’ll definitely need to swing by for a delicious meal and one of their healthy smoothies. Every time I go to Uluwatu I eat here as much as possible, and my mouth is watering just thinking about their refreshing smoothies, entrees, and desserts.

They’ve been offering weekly specials recently, so go their once and check out what the week’s menu is. Last time I was there I got a delicious curry for only 50K IDR (which is about $3.50 USD).

6. Infinity Pool Sunset Bliss at Mu Bungalows

During my first trip down to Uluwatu – I was lucky enough to have friends tell me about this place.

The infinity pool will blow you away, there’s a jacuzzi perfectly located to watch the sunset, and it’s one of my favorite boutique hotels in Bali!  Every time I take people to Uluwatu, I make sure I take them for an infinity pool sunset swim at Mu Resort!  It’s also a really amazing options if you want a nicer / more luxurious stay in Uluwatu.

For Uluwatu travelers who aren’t staying at Mu Bungalows, they offer Day-Passes – so you can swing by for epic views and sunset swims for a small fee. They’ve also recently opened up a new restaurant there and the food is amazing (especially the pastries).

7. Sunday’s Beach Club

Finns Beach Club - Uluwatu

2023 Update : After two years of being closed, Sunday’s Beach Club is back open!

I was fortunate enough to spend a day at Sunday’s Beach Club during my first trip to Bali, and it completely blew my mind! Yes, it is a bit expensive for Indonesian standards, but it’s worth every penny.  T his private beach is amazing , the food is incredible, and it’s simply a fantastic way to spend a day.  There are dozens of incredible resorts and hotels nearby, there’s also a decent happy hour selection, and  nighttime bonfires.

There is an entrance fee for a day-pass, but that goes towards your food and drink. If you do decide to spend a day here at Finn’s, it might just be your favorite day you spend in Uluwatu! Everything there is honestly just so lush, and they treat their guests super well.

Bring a book, some sunscreen, and relax on the beach while you knock back some cocktails or fresh coconuts!

8. The Edge in Bali

The Edge - Uluwatu, Bali

If you’ve been on Instagram in the last five years, chances are you’ve seen this famous Uluwatu hotspot!

Known for its infinity pool alongside the cliffs of Uluwatu, The Edge in Bali is a hotel/resort, but guests can also come and experience the pool on a day pass as well. While there is an entrance fee (that goes towards the purchase of food) and prices are quite expensive, it’s worth every penny to swim in the pool and admire the epic Uluwatu coastline views.

You could easily spend all day drinking and swimming in the pool to escape the heat, but it’s another place I highly recommend coming here an hour or two before sunset! The way the light hits the coastline during golden hour is magical, and it also makes for a pretty cool photo!

9. Savaya Bali

Savaya Bali - Uluwatu NIghtlife

Simply the coolest and best place for nightlife in Uluwatu & Bali

While there are tons of places to enjoy some drinks and dancing in Uluwatu, I’d say that Savaya Bali is the most beautiful and EPIC club on the entire island. When the biggest DJ’s and artists from around the world come here, THIS is where they play.

It has everything you look for in a club – epic views, sunsets, lights, production, swimming pools, bottle service, tasty food, drinks, and so much more. Check out their parties on the weekends for an incredible experience.

I recently attended two back-to-back nights here at Savaya for Rufus Du Sol & Black Coffee, and partying and dancing while swimming in the infinity pool was an experience I’ll never forget! They are CONSTANTLY organizing parties, so if you plan your trip in advance you can schedule it and attend a wild party.

You can also follow them on Instagram for event details — plus they regularly announce contests/ promos where you can get free tickets/ guest-list. Either way though, if you’re looking for a good night out in Bali – YOU MUST check out Savaya while traveling around Uluwatu.

10. Padang Padang Beach

Padang Padang Beach - Uluwatu

Padang Padang Beach is one of Uluwatu’s most beautiful and iconic beaches, and for good reason! It’s quite spacious (with some places with shade for my fellow fair-skinned folk), and is a fun place to spend a couple hours. It’s one of the quintessential Uluwatu attractions, and you’ll drive by it many times as you explore the Bukit.

Padang Padang Beach is also home to one of the most unique weekly parties in Uluwatu! Bali is one of the best party islands in Southeast-Asia, and you definitely need to check out the weekly event at Padang Padang every Saturday night! While it wasn’t happening when I was living there recently, events are starting to pop back up again!

11. Uluwatu Beaches

Whether you’re  backpacking through Bali  or enjoying a stay at some of the best luxury resorts in Uluwatu, the best part of your stay should be the gorgeous beaches. Each and every one of them is picture-perfect and should be added to your  Bali Instagram checklist .

Uluwatu Beaches

While some of them are great for swimming, others provide the perfect waves for surfing. But all of them can offer a fantastic beach day with stunning scenery and crystal clear waters.

And having your own moto to is pretty much essential when visiting Uluwatu (or else you’ll be spending a ton of money on taxis/ Gojeks) and wasting a bunch of time. Uluwatu is a fantastic place to learn how to ride a moto though, and renting one should only cost about $5-6 USD per day.

The Best Beaches in Uluwatu include:

  • Suluban Beach
  • Tegal Wangi Beach
  • Padang Padang Beach
  • Bingin Beach
  • Dreamland Beach
  • Nyang Nyang Beach
  • Nunggalan Beach
  • Melasti Beach
  • Green Bowl Beach (A really cool secluded beach but the hike down can be intense)
  • Pandawa Beach
  • Karma Kandara Private Beach (Club)

TOP 5 BEST BEACHES IN ULUWATU AREA 🌏 SOUTH BALI, INDONESIA

All of these are fantastic beaches and worth a visit! If you don’t have your a moto, what you could do is hire a driver for the day (which is super affordable in Bali), and you could do a full day of beach hopping. All of these are within a 15-20 minute drive max from the main area of Uluwatu.

Travel Advice |  PLEASE make sure you have proper travel insurance coverage if you rent a moto and drive around Bali.  Unfortunately, accidents do happen (especially when people drink & drive), and you want to make sure you are covered if something happens.

I personally suggest HeyMondo due to their extensive range of cover for all situations and trip lengths, their fair pricing, and their handy app which allows you to not only manage any claims within the app, but also access free assistance online so you don’t need to rack up an expensive phone bill while abroad!

12. Ulu Cliffhouse

Ulu Cliffhouse is a relatively new beach club located on the edge of a cliff overlooking the ocean, and it’s simply an Uluwatu must visit! They have a pool with plenty of loungers, so prepare to feel pampered in this stunning location. Order cocktails while you relax by the pool, or head down to the private beach at the end of a narrow pathway.

The views from Ulu Cliffhouse are unrivaled and provide some wonderful photo opportunities. This is one of the Uluwatu attractions that you’ll want to document for ‘the Gram’.

The food is delicious, the staff are super nice, and it’s also a great place to do some co-working (I’ve brought my laptop there many times to work from their beautiful oceanfront tables).

Ulu Cliffhouse - Uluwatu

13. Tuesday Cinema Night at Ulu Cliffhouse

One of my favorite things to to do in Uluwatu is watching a movie every Tuesday night! They transform the chic beach club into a movie theater and offer the same menu for dinner and drinks.

It’s my new favorite way to watch a movie, and I went at least 5 or 6 different times when I was living in Uluwatu. Movies start around 7PM, but I’d recommend getting there a bit early to enjoy a fresh coconut or bintang and watch the sunset.

Tuesday Cinema Night at Ulu Cliffhouse

14. Balangan Viewpoint

Just to the right of Balangan Beach, you’ll find the stunning Balangan viewpoint, situated on top of a cliff. It’s easy to get to and provides panoramic views of the beach, ocean, and coastline.

It’s a beautiful place to take photos, but be warned that in the evening just before sunset the viewing point does get rather crowded. For this reason, it may be best to visit in the afternoon. After taking in the wonderful sights, head to the beach for a light meal at one of the beachfront restaurants.

15. Explore The Cave at Pantai Tegal Wangi

The cliffs at Pantai Tegal Wangi are a popular sunset location. But breaking free from the crowds is often the best option. Take the small staircase down to the secluded beach and explore the small rock pools that line the shore.

There’s also a cave on the beach which provides some great photo opportunities. Just be sure to check the tides before heading to the beach. It’s important to visit at low tide as the beach becomes very small during high tide which can become dangerous.

16. Uluwatu Surfing

Surfing is by far one of the best things to do in Uluwatu! The locals have found some amazing spots, so whether you’re an avid surfer, or just starting out, there’s a surf spot suitable for you.

Padang Padang is one of the more popular surf spots in the area. The best part is it’s suitable for both advanced surfers and wave seekers that are just beginning their surfing journey. The two breaks make this possible. If you’ve got a lot of experience under your belt, head to the famous left break and ride the barrels. If you’re just starting out, surf the gentle beach break to the right.

Suluban, Bingin, and Dreamland Beach are other locations ideal for expert surfers. They’re also wonderful locations to watch some pro surfing. So, if the waves are calling you, be sure to add surfing to your Uluwatu itinerary.

17. Bali Paragliding

paragliding in uluwatu, bali

For those adrenaline junkies looking to take to the sky, there are daily paragliding flights that take off from the cliff that overlooks Nyang Nyang Beach! I haven’t personally gotten the chance to do this yet, but I’ve seen paragliders and it looks incredible!

Make sure you’re wearing closed shoes, as the company won’t let you fly in slip-slops. It’s also a great idea to bring a Go-Pro if you have one as you’ll want to preserve these memories for as long as possible.

It costs around $100 USD for a 30-minute tandem flight – Contact the people at  Bali Paraglide Tours  for reservations

18. GWK Cultural Park

gwk cultural park - places to visit in Uluwatu

Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park  is an impressive 240 hectares and features some incredible works of art. The main attraction at this cultural complex is a 492-foot statue of Vishnu, as well as one of the mythical bird Garuda.

Apart from strolling the grounds and admiring the statues, you can also visit the on-site reflexology center, the souvenir store, and the theater. Often you’ll be able to catch a performance by traditional dancers – this always takes place by the big statue of Vishnu.

I’ve actually been fortunate enough to attend a music festival here, and it’s such an awesome place to visit in Uluwatu! Just be sure to bring plenty of water, as you’ll get tired exploring in the Bali humidity.

19. Treat Yourself to a Spa Day

Beauty treatments in Bali are extremely cheap, and Uluwatu is no exception. It’s not uncommon that you end up paying one-eighth of the price you would pay in the USA. You’ll find nail bars, massage parlors, reflexology centers, and hair salons scattered all over Uluwatu. So, why not spend a day making the absolute most of them.

Taking some time off will allow you to recalibrate after all the exploring you’ll be doing. This is one of the top things to do in Uluwatu for those wanting to relax.

If you’re not on a tight budget, you can also visit world-class spa facilities at resorts like the Spa Alila at Alila Villas Uluwatu .

20. Karang Boma Cliff

Karang Boma Cliff offers spectacular views, similar to those at the viewing point near Uluwatu Temple but with far fewer people crowding the area. The viewing point is located between Uluwatu Temple and Nyang Nyang Beach – the turnoff is marked by a laminated sign.

There are a couple of locals that have set up a toll gate of sorts to make money off the tourists. They don’t charge much to get through but if you’d like to skip the informal payment make your way there earlier in the day. They only seem to set up shop in the afternoons when they know there’ll be a fair amount of people wanting to visit. There is very little in the way of protection toward the edge of the cliff, so be careful and don’t venture too close to the edge.

21. Jimbaran Bay Beach Dinner

Not exactly in Uluwatu, but having dinner and watching the sunset go down in Jimbaran is an absolute must for all visitors to Bali.   Complete with deliciously fresh seafood, candle-lit ambiance, and cold bintangs…it’s a perfect way to spend an evening.

Read all about the  Best 10 Restaurants at Jimbaran Bay , and don’t miss out on a gorgeous sunset dining experience.  I’ve tried a few of the restaurants on the list, and every one of them was incredible!  Oh, how I miss the food in Indonesia!

22. Travel Photoshoot

Uluwatu is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in Bali, so where better to hire a photographer and document the most picturesque moments of your vacation or honeymoon.

There are many photographers all over Uluwatu, so sourcing one is never difficult. They’ll be able to take you to the most stunning locations in the area. As well as having a photographer, they’ll act as a guide to hidden locations you wouldn’t have otherwise have discovered.

You’ll end up with a stunning collection of photographs to remember your trip by, and have an awesome time creating those memories. Set aside at least one day of your trip to go on a photo mission. If one of your fellow travel companions knows what they’re doing with a camera, this can even become a free activity.

23. Pre-Game / Afterparty at a Mart Party

Before and after the major club events, parties, and festivals down in Uluwatu – all the party-goers head to one of the Mart’s to have some drinks.  It might sound a bit funny, but these can be so fun and get pretty wild!  I brought my portable music player there several times, and had kick-ons for hours!

It’s a younger/ backpacker crowd full of international travelers and surfers, and some nights can be hit/miss, but if you’re there during a good mart party, you’ll love it!

24. Relax in the Sea Jacuzzi Pools

There are incredible natural ‘jacuzzi’ pools at Tegal Wangi Beach. It’s not a very popular beach amongst the locals, so you’ll often find it very quiet. Wedding photographers seem to be the only locals interested in this hidden gem.

It’s a great place to relax on the beach during the day, and you’ll have access to the ‘jacuzzi’ pools as soon as the tide is low enough. The sunset is also absolutely magnificent from this spot, like most other places in Uluwatu. But the privilege of being able to watch it without a crowd around you is a rare treat.

Spend the day lazing in these natural pools for a free spa-like experience. You’ll also be able to take some unique photographs in the pools, especially if you have a waterproof camera to make use of.

25. Never Miss A Sunset

Last, but not certainly not least…I personally think that Uluwatu is simply best place in Bali to watch the sunset.  There are so many amazing viewpoints to choose from, but my favorites are Uluwatu temple, Uluwatu Beach, or Mu Resort.

Am I Missing Any Epic Things To Do in Uluwatu?

I revisited Uluwatu in January 2019, but unfortunately I only had a couple days down there as I was attending a music festival!  I’m sure there are so many more epic things to do in Uluwatu that are on this list, and would love to keep this article updated with the best information!  So let me know if you think I need to add any awesome activities to this list!

The Complete Guide to Uluwatu, Bali – Everything You Need to Know

uluwatu bali places to visit

What's In This Guide?

Welcome to Uluwatu – the surfing paradise and beach haven on the southern tip of Bali, Indonesia !

As someone who has spent several days exploring this special area of Bali, I’m excited to provide you with my personal guide to making the most of your own visit to Uluwatu.

Whether you’re a first-timer looking for the top things to see and do, or a returning traveler hoping to uncover some hidden gems, I’ve got you covered. So, let’s get started with the need-to-know basics!

The Best Time to Visit Uluwatu

One of the biggest factors in planning your perfect Uluwatu vacation is when to go. As an equatorial destination, Bali enjoys year-round warm temperatures and sunshine – but the weather does vary slightly throughout the year.

The dry season between April and October is generally considered the best time to visit Uluwatu. During these months you can expect hot, sunny days perfect for surfing, swimming, sunbathing and exploring the temples and landscapes. September and October are the busiest tourist months.

From November to March, the wet season brings increased humidity, daily rain showers and occasionally strong winds. But the weather is still warm and prices are lower, so it can be a good option if you don’t mind a little rain. Surfing conditions also remain excellent.

If you’re flexible with dates, April-June and September-October are ideal times with mostly dry sunny weather, fewer crowds and lower prices before peak season.

Getting to Uluwatu

Uluwatu is located on the southernmost tip of Bali’s Bukit Peninsula. The most common way to reach it is from Bali’s airport in the south.

From Ngurah Rai International Airport: Uluwatu is only 30-60-minute drive south of the airport. The best option is to pre-book a private airport transfer which will take you directly to your hotel. Expect to pay around $15-25 USD each way.

A cheaper option is to take a taxi from the airport arrivals area. Make sure to negotiate the fare first – it should be 400,000 to 500,000 IDR ($25-35 USD).

You can also catch a bus from the airport to Kuta, then transfer to a minibus to Uluwatu. Total journey time is 1-2 hours.

From Kuta/Seminyak: If you’re already in Kuta, Seminyak or elsewhere in south Bali, you can take a taxi or pre-book a driver for the 30-60 minute drive south to Uluwatu.

Minibuses also run regularly during daylight hours for just 50,000 IDR ($3.50 USD) per person each way.

Tip: Be sure to check what part of Uluwatu your hotel is located in, as some areas like Padang Padang Beach are up to 30 mins drive from central Uluwatu.

Where to Stay in Uluwatu

With its cliffs, jungle landscape and string of beautiful beaches, Uluwatu has an awesome range of places to stay. Here are my top recommendations for which areas to stay in Uluwatu:

  • Padang Padang/Impossibles Beach  – For direct beach access where you can walk straight onto the sand. Close to the surf.
  • Bingin Beach  – More upscale hotels and villas overlooking this famous surf beach. Great sunset views.
  • Pandawa Beach  – A stunning and quieter beach, with luxury resorts and ocean view villas.
  • Central Uluwatu  – Budget guesthouses and mid-range resorts close to the main attractions like the Uluwatu Temple.
  • Nyang Nyang Beach  – A hidden paradise beach reached by stairs down a cliff. Unique eco-resorts offer epic views.
  • Balangan Beach  – Relaxed surf beach dotted with cliffside resorts and budget accommodation.

For first-time visitors, I recommend staying as close to the beaches and coast as possible to make the most of Uluwatu’s spectacular ocean scenery.

Some of my personal favorite hotels in Uluwatu include:

  • CassaMia Uluwatu – Incredible luxury villas at Pandawa Beach
  • Anantara Uluwatu Resort – Cliffside resort with amazing views
  • Karma Beach Uluwatu – Stylish beach club vibe on Impossibles Beach
  • Balangan Sea View Bungalows – Cool surfer retreat above Balangan Beach
  • La Joya Biu Biu – Superb oceanfront resort at Balangan Beach

Uluwatu also boasts some of the best glampi ng sites in Bali , like the highly-rated Bubble Hotel, a geodesic dome. It’s worth considering glamping for a more unique experience.

Hidden Gems in Uluwatu (Only Locals, and Now You, Know Of)

While Uluwatu’s main beaches and Uluwatu Temple see lots of visitors, there are still secret spots in the area only well-informed locals and long-time Bali expats know about. Here are some of Uluwatu’s hidden gems to discover.

  • Tropical   Limestone Caves  – Deep in the forested cliffs are cave entrances leading to pristine underground limestone formations and pools. Like a secret lost world!
  • Temples of Pecatu  – Ancient sea temples like Pura Mas Suka and Pura Dalem Pecatu hide amongst the cliffs inland of the coast. Very peaceful and unspoilt.
  • Uluwatu Nightmarket  – Each evening from 6pm behind the temple, locals hawk scrumptious Balinese street food for a few dollars a dish.
  • Bukit Caf é  – An ultra laidback cliffside café serving healthy fare. One of Bali’s best-kept brunch secrets.
  • Nyang Nyang Surf Break  – A reclusive right hand reef break with barrels and turquoise water that only experienced surfers frequent.
  • Jungle Walks  – Follow hidden paths through lush jungle interiors to waterfalls, rice paddies and Balinese village life well off the tourist trail.
  • Discover impressive graffiti street art and murals on the side of buildings, down alleyways, and by the roadside, around Uluwatu.

The Delicious Food You Have To Try in Uluwatu

One of the greatest pleasures in Uluwatu is getting to sample all the mouthwatering cuisine. Let’s take a tasty tour of what you should try:

  • Nasi Campur  – A popular Balinese dish of steamed rice served with small portions of fish, chicken, vegetables, peanuts and a chili sambal. Yum!
  • Satay  – These grilled meat skewers with peanut sauce are a quintessential Indonesian dish. Try chicken, beef, shrimp or tofu versions.
  • Gado Gado  – A veggie lover’s dream – lightly blanched vegetables served with a moreish satay peanut sauce. Healthy and filling.
  • Soto Ayam  – This classic chicken noodle soup with turmeric, ginger, vermicelli noodles and bean sprouts is simple yet so comforting.
  • Seafood  – Being an island paradise, you must sample freshly grilled fish, prawns, crab, lobster and more. Jimbaran Fish Market is great.
  • Babi Guling  – Tender slow-cooked Balinese style suckling pig. The salty, crispy pork skin is amazingly addictive.
  • Fruit Juices & Smoothies  – Made freshly with local tropical fruits. Pineapple, watermelon, banana, jackfruit and young coconut are delish.
  • Desserts  – Try Balinese sweets like klepon rice balls, jaja batun bedug and bubur sumsum. Also great gelato, pancakes, and more.

With so many options, the hardest part is deciding what to try first! Pace yourself and come with an appetite.

Visit Uluwatu Temple

Uluwatu Temple is one of the most famous temples in Bali along with Tanah Lot in Canggu and Pura Ulun Danu Beratan near Munduk . Uluwatu Temple is one of the coolest things to do in Uluwatu as it’s one of the six key temples that are Bali’s spiritual pillars.

The spiritual significance is not the only reason why you should visit this Balinese Hindu temple.

It’s the incredibly scenic sights that you’ll get from the cliffs that draw visitors to this place. Uluwatu Temple sits on a steep cliff 70 metres above sea level overlooking the Indian Ocean. It’s also where you can catch an epic sunset.

Beware of the monkeys here, they are seriously something else and are the worst behaved monkeys I have seen in all of Southeast Asia. Make sure you do not wear sunglasses (even glasses if you can manage) or jewelry.

Don’t bring in plastic water bottles or food. I had a monkey jump on me here, a friend had her phone stolen out of her hand by a monkey and I even saw one try and take a guys flip flop right off of his foot!

The Uluwatu Temple entrance fee is 30,000 and round-trip transfers are available.

Watch a kecak ‘fire’ dance

A stop at Uluwatu Temple isn’t just in order to see the temple itself but also to see the well-known kecak ‘fire’ dance . Yes, there is fire involved. It’s not the fire that makes this Balinese dance so iconic though.

It’s unique even to Balinese dancing because no music is used but instead human vocals from a large group of men as the dance is performed. Like all Balinese dances, it tells a story.

Watching the kecak dance in Uluwatu is the #1 place in all of Bali to see it, at the amphitheater at Uluwatu Temple because you get to see an incredible sunset behind the performers.

Soak up the sun at these top beaches

Besides the temple, Uluwatu is most famous for its stunning white sand beaches and surfing. While not all beaches are ideal for swimming, they certainly are worthy of visiting to hangout in the sun, to watch surfers, see boat ruins and more.

Uluwatu beaches are one of the best things to do in Uluwatu. Some of the best beaches in Uluwatu are:

  • Padang Padang Beach (a scene from Eat, Pray, Love was also filmed here and is okay for swimming)
  • Bingin Beach (stick to swimming on the left-hand side)
  • Melasti Beach (my personal fav and okay for swimming)
  • Dreamland Beach
  • Balangan Beach
  • Nyang Nyang Beach

Many beaches charge entrance fees that typically range from 10,000-15,000 rupiah.

Join a surf and yoga retreat

Surfing and yoga often go hand-in-hand and Uluwatu has a number of Bali retreats that offer both so you can spend your days in the sun while riding waves and your evenings and mornings stretching it out. With retreats that are only a couple of days to those that are a week long, you could easily book a Bali yoga retreat as your entire trip or add it on to your already incredible vacation!

Catch sunset

Easily another one of the top things to do in Uluwatu is sunset. It’s one of the best places in Bali to watch sunset from, mainly because of its location on the southwestern coast and the steep cliffs that give you an amazing viewpoint over the Indian Ocean.

For a unique sunset experience watch the Uluwatu Temple sunset.

If you’ve been there and done that then a stop at Single Fin is in order so you can sip on a cocktail while watching the surfers hit the waves below as the sky explodes with colour. Some other stellar places for sunset are Rock Bar and Delpi Rock Lounge.

Have a Sunday session at Single Fin

Single Fin in Uluwatu is the equivalent to Old Man’s in Canggu and is one of the best things to do in Uluwatu at night. It’s the top spot to party and Sunday’s are their biggest night. Single Fin beach club is worth visiting any day of the week though for sunset or to enjoy food and drinks overlooking the surfers.

It’s a great view any day and they’ve got awesome music, great food and delicious drinks so don’t miss out on visiting one of the best places in Uluwatu!

Visit the beach clubs

Uluwatu is known for its epic beach clubs that are either on the beach or on the edge of a cliff for stunning views over the blue waters. These cliff beach clubs are unique to Uluwatu and are unlike any of the other beach clubs in Bali. A day of beach club hopping is the perfect way to experience the top choices.

A few of the top ones to visit include Sundays Beach Club , that has direct access to the beach, Omnia which is the most unique beach club in all of Bali with million dollar views, Oneeighty which has one of the most insane infinity pools you’ll ever see, Ulu Cliffhouse which is known for its DJ’s, and Karma Beach Club Bali , a more private and secluded club right on the beach.

Zen out at YinSide Yoga

Uluwatu is a very chilled out area of Bali and it’s the perfect spot to lean more into the practice of yin yoga, the most relaxing kind of yoga out there.

The YinSide studio is a dreamy place to practice yoga with instructors that will guide you effortlessly through classes designed for surfers, for relaxation and to get your energy moving through your body.

Founder Hayley Wenn is an absolute pleasure to practice with and her vision for this studio and the eco-friendly products that support local Balinese people that are sold in the shop are truly worth checking out.

You can find the class scheduled on the YinSide Yoga Instagram and be in the know for when retreats are offered!

See the cave at Suluban Beach

Suluban Beach, nicknamed Blue Point, is not an ideal beach for sunbathers but a trip here is in order to see the cool cave that you have to walk through to reach the water. It’s a hot spot for surfers who use it as a point to surf out from into the strong waves.

To get down to the beach you have to walk down many steps and work yourself through the limestone cave (more stairs lead you down).

It’s an Instagram worthy beach, its cool to watch the surfers paddle out and if you walk up the steps on the opposite side then you’ll find yourself at a luxury beach club with a pool and local warung with epic coastal views.

Have Green Bowl Beach all to yourself

One of the more secluded places to go in Uluwatu is Green Bowl Beach, a paradise for beachgoers who wish to have some solid beach time to themselves. Because getting to this beach requires walking down 75 metres of steep stairs down a cliff means that only those who are adventurous enough dare to go.

If you choose to make the decent then you’ll be rewarded with a small 30 metre white sand beach almost to yourself. It’s best to go during low tide when it’s also best for snorkelling.

Soak in the jacuzzi pools of Tegal Wangi Beach

This beach is not very known by the locals, despite it being in a very obvious destination, just below the temple of the same name that sits atop the limestone cliff that rises up from the sand. It was kept secret for quite a while by wedding photographers for its scenic, rugged coastal views.

When you visit the beach make sure you check it out just before sunset during the ‘blue hour’ for epic sunsets and during low tide when the ‘jacuzzis’ are made accessible.

Surf the epic waves

Uluwatu is a surfers paradise for the stellar waves that hit along the coast. You’ll find an abundance of Uluwatu surf camps around here and lessons too as the waves are one of the top Uluwatu attractions. Some of the best surfing beaches are:

  • Uluwatu Beach
  • Green Bowl Beach
  • Suluban Beach

There are even more places to surf, but these are just some of the top places to surf in Uluwatu.

Try paragliding

I can’t think of a better area in Bali to go paragliding as Uluwatu has the most dramatic views from above. So why not get strapped in with an instructor who will tandem paraglide with you and fly over a sea temple, the cliffs and more before landing right on the beach!

Go on a day trip

As wonderful as Uluwatu is, it is also a great jumping off point for the Nusa Islands . Nusa Penida is the most famous of the three, known for Kelingking Beach (T-Rex Cliff) and its other top spots that are oh so picturesque.

From Uluwatu it’s a shorter drive than other areas of Bali to get to Sanur where the boats take off from so you can spend less time in a car and more time exploring!

How to Get to Uluwatu

Uluwatu is a great destination to start your Bali trip in because it’s one of the closest destinations to the Bali airport. It’s a 45-minute drive and you have the option to find a taxi once at the airport or book a private driver to pick you up. Many places to stay in Uluwatu will help you organize a private driver and some even offer shuttles. Expect to pay 125,000 for a taxi or private car.

I personally recommend arranging a transfer before you arrive to avoid the hassle of dealing with taxis.

From other areas of Bali you can choose to take a taxi, hire a private car or use Grab, Uber or Go Jek (the Indonesian version of Grab and Uber).

The price will vary depending on what area you are coming from with taxis being the most expensive, private drivers being well priced and ride sharing apps about the same price, sometimes slightly cheaper.

Getting Around Uluwatu

Uluwatu is big and there is no way that you will be able to walk to the majority of places you’ll want to go sightseeing in Uluwatu. Unfortunately, private drivers run the area and are ridiculously expensive. But you still have options.

The cheapest option is to rent a motorbike which costs 50,000 per day which can get you to all of the activities in Uluwatu. The roads in Uluwatu are smooth but there are plenty of hills and curves. You will have to pay for parking which is never more than 5,000. I highly recommend having experience before driving a motorbike in Bali.

If you don’t want to drive you can use Grab, Uber or Go Jek for drop-offs for all places to see in Uluwatu. Many areas in Uluwatu do not allow drivers from these apps to pick up at the main tourist sites. Some accommodation options have shuttles organized that are affordable.

Enjoy your time in Uluwatu!

15 Fun and Unique Things to do in Uluwatu, Bali

1. see monkeys at a cliff-top temple.

Unique Things to do in Uluwatu, Bali: Pura Luhur Uluwatu Temple

The Pura Luhur Uluwatu Temple is not only one of the best sights in Uluwatu but one of the most incredible things to see in all of Bali. Perched on a towering cliff overlooking the waves that thunderously crash far down below, this mesmerizing religious building will leave you speechless.

Built in the 10th century as a Hindu place of worship, the sacred temple is dedicated to the spirits of the sea, which is why it enjoys a lofty location high above the ocean. As well as its intricately carved architecture and carefully handmade sculptures, the temple is also known for the hundreds of monkeys that call the place home.

Cool Things to do in Uluwatu, Bali: Pura Luhur Uluwatu Temple

You really won’t have to keep an eye out for them when you’re exploring. All the winding pathways that work their way through the temple’s complex are covered in families of friendly (and sometimes annoying!) macaque monkeys. Make sure you keep a strong hold on your belongings – especially when you’re taking pictures. The monkeys are known to be fond of anything that’s not theirs.

2. Dance Under the Stars

Fun Things to do in Uluwatu, Bali: Ulu Garden

You’ll find bands and artists playing live music all over this relaxed town. But when it comes to an incredible experience you’ll be telling everyone about for years, you’ve got to head to Ulu Garden . This incredible location hosts one of the top Uluwatu activities every single evening.

Each night, a different performer takes to the stage to wow the audience with their talents. Depending on when you go, you could experience everything from jazz and acoustic sessions to Balinese and reggae music. To make your evening better, each night is themed – from noodle and curry nights to rib and pop-up market nights. There’s so much going on here that you’ll definitely want to return more than once.

Even when there’s nothing going on, Ulu Garden is still a spellbinding place to be. Set in the beating heart of town, the breezy tropical garden completely changes its character as the sun rises and falls. During the day, it’s a chilled-out place to relax for lunch. But after sunset, it transforms into a high-octane music venue that invites you to dance under the stars.

3. Take a Boat Trip Along the Coast

Uluwatu, Bali Bucket List: Boat Trip

When you’ve had your fill of relaxing at your luxury hotel, one of the top things to do in Uluwatu is to head to the coast and sign up for a boat trip. You’ll find plenty of kiosks along the coast with sellers offering all kinds of excursions at sea. Our favorite is the one that takes you out on a small, local fishing boat known as the Black Pearl .

After you climb on board, your little wooden boat will skirt Uluwatu’s coastline, giving you a unique view of the spectacular cliffs you can’t see any other way. Because of the coast’s small size, you’ll have the chance to carefully sail into hidden coves and stop at clandestine bays that the bigger boats can’t reach. Make sure you take your swimming gear and a towel with you because you’ll definitely want to jump in the ocean.

Don’t worry about bringing your own drinks. There’s a cooler onboard filled with icy cold drinks that you can help yourself to.

4. Visit the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park

Must do things in Uluwatu, Bali: Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park

Also known as GWK for short, the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park is one of the best things to see in Uluwatu. Tucked away in the hills of Jimbaran, this iconic attraction is best known for the Hindu statue of the god Vishnu accompanied by his mythical guardian eagle.

The eye-catching monument stands at a whopping 400 feet tall and is set on a pedestal that’s already 150 feet high. It’s impossible to describe just how tall this is – you really have to see it for yourself.

Uluwatu, Bali Things to do: Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park

Vishnu is just one of the remarkable statues in the park. As you wander around, you’ll discover many other statues depicting various Hindu gods – although they’re not quite as tall and intimidating. The 148-acre complex also features loads of souvenir stalls, a great selection of dining venues, and even a cinema that shows an interesting short film on the mythical beast Garuda.

If you feel exhausted at just the idea of walking around a place so big, we’ve got a surprise for you. You can rent a segway at the entrance and work your way around the entire park without taking a single step!

5. Devour Babi Guling

Cool Things to do in Uluwatu, Bali: Babi Guling

When you need a break from all the Uluwatu sightseeing, stop at a local restaurant and order yourself a great big plate of babi guling . One of the most delicious things you could ever get your hands on, babi guling is a dish made of suckling pig that’s almost impossible to find outside of Bali.

The name translates into English as “turning pig” because the pig is turned by hand on an open fire while it’s being cooked. Each plate is piled high with a mixture of delicate meat, crispy skin, flavor-packed stuffing, steamed rice, fresh veggies, and spicy sambal. One small plate is more than enough for a full meal!

Best Things to do in Uluwatu, Bali: Babi Guling

Decades ago, this popular dish was reserved exclusively for major celebrations and religious ceremonies. But because it’s loved so much by visitors as well as locals, you can find it in restaurants throughout Bali today.

Warung Ubay is one of the best places in Uluwatu for babi guling . This casual dining spot has a tropical vibe, decorated with bamboo columns and straw ceilings, and serves some of the most delectable, authentic, and budget-friendly babi guling you’ll ever come across.

6. Go to the Balangan Viewpoint

Fun Things to do in Uluwatu, Bali: Balangan Viewpoint

Whether you’re a professional photographer or you’re just looking for content to fill your Instagram account, a snap of Balangan Beach from this prestigious location will definitely be a sparkling gem in your collection. This well-known beach doesn’t look like much when you’re at sea level. But when you’re looking down at it from a towering cliff, the stretch of sand looks nothing short of magical.

The Balangan Viewpoint is located on the tall cliff at the northernmost end of the beach. Because it’s so high, it’s a pretty tough climb. But as long as you keep up your stamina and remember why you’re trekking uphill, the view will be more than worth it.

Must do things in Uluwatu, Bali: Balangan Viewpoint

From this lofty viewpoint, you can see the entire beach. Its golden sands, tree-clad cliffs, craggy rocks, dazzling aquamarine ocean, and surfers that look like tiny ants can all be captured in a single shot. While the view is spectacular at sunset, the place is also full of wedding photographers at this time of day. Because of this, it’s best to avoid sunset hours and arrive a little earlier to enjoy the view in peace.

7. Witness the Kecak Fire Dance

What to do in Uluwatu, Bali: Kecak Fire Dance

Visit the Pura Luhur Uluwatu temple at sunset, and you’ll discover one of the most incredible and unique things to do in Uluwatu. Every day at 5:45 pm, this spiritual temple transforms from a popular tourist attraction into a performance area for the spectacular Kecak Fire Dance .

Also known as “The Monkey Chant,” this one-of-a-kind show features a live rendition of an episode taken from the Ramayana epic. A group of incredibly talented actors and dancers take to the small stone stage and put on a phenomenal show you’ll remember forever. We don’t want to give too much away, but you can expect traditional Balinese costumes, dramatic stunts, and plenty of fire.

Best Things to do in Uluwatu, Bali: Kecak Fire Dance

Due to the lack of music, the atmosphere can feel a little bit eerie throughout the performance. Music is replaced by trance-like chanting, which begins slowly and gradually speeds up throughout the show. Even though no words are spoken, the movements and chanting make it fairly simple to understand what’s going on.

Head to the amphitheater next to the temple about 15 minutes early to get a good seat. As the sun sets behind the stage, it provides an impressive and fiery backdrop to enhance the story.

8. Indulge Your Body with a Beach Massage

Unique Things to do in Uluwatu, Bali: Beach Massage

Ticking off all the top Uluwatu attractions can be exhausting. When you need to take a little break, reward all your hard work with a massage. Don’t worry about a massage costing you a small fortune. They’re remarkably affordable throughout Bali and likely to be considerably cheaper than they are at home.

One of the best places to indulge yourself with a massage is on Uluwatu Beach. As you’re lying on the plush sun loungers, enjoying the glorious sunshine, you’ll see local women wandering up and down the shore offering massages.

Cool Things to do in Uluwatu, Bali: Beach Massage

You don’t even have to get up. Simply roll over and they’ll treat you to the ahh-inducing massage you deserve directly on your bed. These massages usually cost just $ 5-$10 USD, making them an incredible value for the money.

If you want something a little more professional, you can spend a few hours at one of Uluwatu’s day spas instead. The Istana is one of the most glamorous day spas in all of Bali. Located just steps away from the ocean, this relaxing paradise boasts everything from meditation retreats and sensory deprivation tanks of hyperbaric chambers and, of course, an amazing massage menu.

9. Have a Relaxing Day at Padang Padang Beach

Fun Things to do in Uluwatu, Bali: Padang Padang Beach

This town is famed for its gorgeous beaches, and spending a full day on a sandy shore is one of the must-do things in Uluwatu. If you’ve only got time to visit one beach during your stay, we suggest you make it Padang Padang Beach, also known as Pantai Labuan Sait.

As one of the coolest surfing spots on the island, you don’t have to be a professional wave rider to have a good time here. The perfectly golden sand, dazzling blue water, and natural shade provided by towering trees make this place beyond breathtaking. You’ve got to work your way down a tricky flight of stairs to get here, but the rocky steps are worth traversing for the chance to spend a day in paradise.

Must do things in Uluwatu, Bali: Padang Padang Beach

Look out to sea and you’ll spot countless surfers waiting for the perfect wave. Gaze inland and you’ll see families of macaque monkeys playing in the trees. Although the depths are best left to professional surfers, you can still enjoy the shallow parts of the sea and cool off when the sunshine gets to be too much.

10. Eat up Your Proteins and Veggies with Gado Gado

What to do in Uluwatu, Bali: Gado Gado

Whether or not you’re a fan of greens, one of the best things to do in Uluwatu when you’re feeling hungry is to grab a plate of gado gado . This vegetarian dish is a type of Indonesian “salad” that’s loaded with so many delicious ingredients that even the most committed carnivore won’t be able to turn it down.

A plate of gado gado is usually filled with tofu, tempeh, bean sprouts, cucumbers, chayote, long beans, carrots, and a hard-boiled egg. As if that wasn’t enough flavor already, the whole thing is dressed with a special peanut sauce that’s got a little kick. The result is a plate that’s absolutely bursting with flavor and texture. There’s really nothing like it, and you’ll be craving this dish as soon as you land back home.

Uluwatu, Bali Things to do: Gado Gado

Ayu’s Food From The Heart is where you’ll find the most incredible gado gado in Uluwatu. This colorful and welcoming cafe serves huge portions of gado gado that also include slices of fresh tomato, hard-boiled eggs, and chili peppers. It’s worth ordering one of their freshly-squeezed juices to go with it because the peanut sauce is seriously hot here!

11. Take a Ceramics Class

Best Things to do in Uluwatu, Bali: Ceramics Class

When you’re feeling artsy, one of the coolest things to do in Uluwatu is to join in with a ceramics class held at Jenggala . Suitable for kids and adults (as well as experienced crafters and complete newbies), these short classes invite you to get creative and make your own ceramics entirely from scratch.

If that sounds like a little much for you, you can decorate one of the pre-made pieces instead. Whatever you decide to do, your finished work of art will make a wonderful souvenir or a gift for someone you wished was with you on your adventure.

Cool Things to do in Uluwatu, Bali: Ceramics Class

Every step of the ceramics-making process is done at Jenggala, from the shaping and firing to the decorating and glossing. If you want to make one entirely from scratch, it takes about 4-5 days, so make sure you plan ahead. If you haven’t got time, you can always buy one of the kits to take home.

12. Go Surfing at Suluban Beach

Unique Things to do in Uluwatu, Bali: Suluban Beach

Whether you’re a total surf pro or you’ve never even sat on a board before, one of the most fun things to do in Uluwatu is to get out into the ocean and catch a wave. Almost every beach in this part of Bali has excellent surf conditions, but many surfers agree that Suluban Beach is the absolute best.

Also known as Blue Point Beach, this stunning bay features a narrow stretch of sand lapped by waves that are perfect for riding. It’s a little tricky to get to – you’ve got to descend a very steep staircase and work your way through rocky openings to get there. But when you do, you’ll be rewarded with a stunning beach that’s perfectly positioned for surfing.

Uluwatu, Bali Bucket List: Suluban Beach

Even if you don’t actually want to try catching a wave yourself, Suluban Beach is still definitely worth a visit. Surfers from all over Bali come to this place for the long, powerful swells and continuous barrels. They’re so incredibly talented that you can spend hours just watching them.

13. Chill Out at a Swanky Beach Club

If you want to feel like a VIP, one of the top things to do in Uluwatu is to spend a day at one of the resort’s cool beach clubs. While the town is best known for its cliff-top clubs that practically float in the air, Uluwatu is also home to a handful of elegant beach clubs where you can relax on soft, golden sands and take a dip into the sparkling sea whenever you like.

Because all the beach clubs in Uluwatu are so spectacular, it’s almost impossible to pick a favorite. But Sundays Beach Club has to be up there. Booking in advance does get you some perks, but even if you’ve left it until the last minute, you can usually just walk up and get in.

A VIP booking will get you a plush sun lounger in the best location, complimentary use of a beach towel, free Wi-Fi access, and unlimited use of stand-up paddleboards, snorkeling equipment, and kayaks. One of the best things about this beach club is that it stays open past dark when sunset bonfires and outdoor movies are held.

14. Watch the Sunset from Karang Boma Cliff

Must do things in Uluwatu, Bali: Karang Boma Cliff

Uluwatu boasts some spectacular sunsets, and no matter how many or how few evenings you spend here, you’ve got to dedicate one to watching the stunning natural show. There are loads of great places to watch the sunset in Uluwatu, and our favorite is from the top of Karang Boma Cliff.

Also known as Uluwatu Cliff, this beautiful cliff top is located on the south side of the Pura Luhur Uluwatu temple. You can reach it by passing through the separate parking area that’s clearly signposted for the sunset viewpoint.

Not only is the view from the cliff superb, but the view of the cliff itself is mesmerizing. Try to stand on the land that directly faces the cliff and see if you can get the ocean and the sky in the background. This position makes for an incredible shot – especially if you catch it at sunset. If you’ve got a drone, you’ll even be able to capture yourself in the picture!

15. Cool Off with Es Campur

Uluwatu, Bali Things to do: Es Campur

When the intense Balinese heat gets to be too much for you, devouring a bowl of es campur is one of the best things to do in Uluwatu. Similar to a snowcone, but so much better, es campur is a type of shaved ice dessert piled high with all kinds of delicious toppings. Its name translates into English as “mixed ice.” If you’ve ever had nasi campur (“mixed rice”) before, it’s essentially the same concept – but with ice shavings instead of rice.

The shaved ice is mixed with coconut milk and condensed milk, giving it a wonderfully sweet flavor and creamy texture. Toppings can include almost anything sweet, such as cantaloupe, papaya, lychees, and cubes of colored Jell-O. If you’re not into fruit, you’ll find plenty of places selling more indulgent variations, with things like caramel, chocolate, and Nutella, too.

What to do in Uluwatu, Bali: Es Campur

Es campur is available all over the place in Uluwatu, from street vendors with carts dedicated to the stuff to fancy restaurants that place elevated versions on their dessert menus.

The Best Things to Do in Uluwatu – The Basics

Currency = indonesian rupiah .

The currency in Indonesia is the Rupiah (IDR)

1 USD = 15,416.80 Indonesian Rupiah

You’ll find that some restaurants and cafes will accept card payments but you do need cash to travel around Bali. Cash is useful if you need to tip a guide, split a restaurant bill, or shop at a local market. You can find ATMs in town.

Language = Bahasa Indonesia

Bahasa Indonesia is the official language of Indonesia. In Bali, there are three main languages spoken on the island: Indonesian, Balinese, and English.

I suggest brushing up on basic Balinese phrases to be polite. I love using the Duolingo app to learn languages. However, because Bali is pretty touristy and a digital nomad hot spot, you’ll find that it’s relatively easy to get around with English.

Phone & Internet

Phone and internet can be spotty around the island depending on your location, especially in remote locations. However, if you are in the town center of places like Uluwatu, Canggu, or Ubud, you’ll find many cafes with fast and reliable wifi.

Bali has become one of the top destinations for remote workers, so overall, the island has a great infrastructure for digital nomads. Most hotels and villas will also have wifi. I suggest double-checking with your accommodation.

Daily Budget

Bali is a relatively affordable place to visit. Especially compared to destinations in the west. The average budget for Bali is about $25 to $40 per day. However, travelers have spent as little as $15 per day by spending time at the beach and eating local food.

Tipping in Bali

Tipping is not customary in Bali, however, a small amount of change is always appreciated. If you choose to tip, an amount of 10% to 15% is generous. Or a small amount such as 10,000 to 20,000 IDR is polite to leave.

Can You Drink The Tap Water?

No, do not drink the tap water in Bali.

US citizens will need a visa to enter Indonesia. You can either purchase a visa on arrival or online ahead of time.

The 16 Best Things to Do in Uluwatu

1. spend time at a beach club .

One of the best things to do in Uluawtu is to visit one of the many renowned beach clubs in the area. I have a full blog post all about the best beach clubs in Uluwatu but a couple of my personal favorites are Sunday’s Beach Club and Palmilla Beach Club.

Typically beach clubs in Uluwatu will have a minimum spend to access daybeds and lounge areas. If you are spending the day, it’s well worth it since you’ll be purchasing food and drinks. This is certainly one of the most relaxing ways to spend a day in Uluwatu.

2. Relax at Nyang Nyang Beach

Nyang Nyang Beach is a hidden gem near Uluwatu. It has pristine white sand and bright blue water. It’s more secluded than other beaches making it less crowded than many other beaches in Uluwatu.

To access the beach will be a bit of a walk from the parking area. Make sure you’re wearing comfortable shoes. You can also visit the abandoned airplane here (more on this later in the article).

3. Watch The Sunset at Rock Bar

Rock Bar Bali is arguably the best place to watch the sunset in Uluwatu. Rock Bar is located at AYANA Hotels and sits 14 meters above the sea. It’s ranked as one of the world’s best bars making it a must on your Uluwatu itinerary.

As you can imagine, it fills up fast. Especially during the high tourist season. Sunset reservations at Rock Bar are only available for AYANA guests however, walk-in guests are still welcome to enjoy the Rock Bar sunset – you just need to get here early.

Smart attire is required here. Keep this in mind if you are planning to visit after being at the beach.

We visited on a busy weekend evening and unfortunately, Rock Bar was booked. If you are trying to visit on a weekend, get here super early.

4. Nyang Nyang Beach Airplane and Shipwreck

At Nyang Nyang Beach in Uluwatu, an abandoned Boeing 737 airplane sits near the edge of Nyang Nyang cliff. This serves as a unique photo attraction in the area. They do have plans to turn this into a luxury villa.

You can also visit the famous shipwreck (which is technically located at Nunggalan Beach about a 1 mile walk from Nyang Nyang Beach). This shipwreck now makes for an amazing photo and unique Instagram spot in Uluwatu. Sitting at the top of the shipwreck makes for an amazing view.

5. Suluban Beach

Suluban Beach, also known as Blue Point Beach, is famous for its unique entrance through a cave and bright blue waters. It’s a great spot in Uluwatu for surfers and beach lovers. Here you’ll find scenic views, cliffside cafes and local eateries, occasional events, and the best photo opportunities.

6. Uluwatu Cliff (Karang Boma Cliff)

Uluwatu Cliff, also known as Karang Boma Cliff, is one of the best viewpoints in Uluwatu. Karang Boma Cliff is the perfect spot to watch the sunset.

To get here, you’ll either need to rent a scooter or hire a driver. There is an entrance fee for Karang Boma Cliff of 10,000 IDR and an additional fee if you want to fly your drone.

7. Have Dinner at The Cave

Do you want a unique dining experience in a 25,000-year-old cave? The Cave by Chef Ryan Clift is a restaurant located at the Edge in Uluwatu, Bali.

The Cave is a 22-seat restaurant offering set 7 to 10-course menus with optional drink pairings. This cave was discovered in 2013 during the construction of the property. To preserve this cave, a team was assembled to make it possible, and is now turned into a one of a kind dining experience.

You need to make a reservation well in advance considering it’s such a small restaurant. My friend, my sister, and I went to the dinner second seating at 9 PM and had the standard 7-course meal (which turned into 11 courses).

Not only was the food amazing but there were light show intermissions and a break to explore the cave. This is hands down the most unique dinner experience I’ve ever had. And some of the best food. I do think this experience was well worth it.

8. Single Fin

Single Fin is great for breakfast, lunch, or even a night out. It’s situated on the cliffs overlooking the renowned Uluwatu surf break. This makes Single Fin an amazing sunset spot in Uluwatu.

They have live music on Wednesdays and Sundays, Check out their website for other events happening during the time of your trip.

9. Padang-Padang Beach

Padang Padang Beach is one of Bali’s most famous surf spots and is also well known for being featured in the movie, “Eat, Prey, Love.” It’s located on the Bukit Peninsula with white sandy beaches and amazing surf breaks.

10. Bingin Beach

Bingin Beach is another popular beach in Uluwatu located on the Bukit Peninsula. You’ll find incredible views, great surfing conditions, and a laid-back atmosphere with several cafes and accommodations.

Bingin Beach does tend to get busy, so I suggest visiting early in the day.

11. Dinner and a Night Out at Tabu

In my opinion, Tabu is a must to add to your Uluwatu itinerary. It’s a restaurant and club. The cuisine is Mexican and Japanese-inspired and it’s delicious. Near the end of the night, Tabu turns into a club. Perfect for a fun night out! They call it Uluwatu’s first “supper club.”

12. Drifters Market on Sunday

If you are in Uluwatu on a Sunday, make sure to head to Drifter’s Market. Located at Drifter’s Surf Shop, every Sunday they have a market with local produce, baked goods, and other fun things you can shop for. A great spot to pick up a souvenir.

There are also so many cute boutiques in town. Shopping in Uluwatu is a good way to spend a rainy day.

13. Balangan Viewpoint

Another amazing sunset spot in Bali is Balangan Beach’s viewpoint. There are two main viewpoints here, the most popular is a small edge that overlooks the sandy beach and the turquoise blue water.

The second viewpoint is a large platform covered in vines. This viewpoint is located a little further down the beach. Here, you have a view of the picturesque coastline.

It’s best to visit earlier in the day because during sunset there will typically be a handful of wedding photographers working here.

Are you visiting Ubud during your trip to Bali? Check out my 3 day Ubud itinerary here!

14. Uluwatu Temple

Uluwatu Temple is located 70 meters above the Indian Ocean and is one of Bali’s most scenic temples.

Not only will you find panoramic views from Uluwatu Temple, but you’ll also get to experience traditional Kecak dance performances. Make sure you keep your personal belongings close, there are monkeys here that may grab your things.

The entrance fee to Uluwatu Temple is 50,000 IDR. Have your shoulders and knees covered – you are typically able to rent sarongs if not dressed appropriately.

15. Watch a Kecak Fire Dance

As mentioned above, you can experience traditional Kecak performances at Uluwatu Temple. During sunset, around 6 PM, on a cliff-top amphitheater in the Uluwatu Temple complex, you can see this iconic dance performance.

Tickets cost 150,000 IDR (10 USD) per person. I suggest buying tickets early because they usually sell out.  Purchase tickets here.

16. Surfing in Uluwatu

Surfing is certainly one of the best things to do in Uluwatu. Surfers visit Uluwatu from all over the world to experience world-class surf breaks. If you are new to surfing, you’ll want to start on easier beaches such as Dreamland or Padang Padang.

Book a surf lesson in Uluwatu here.

When is The Best Time to Visit Bali?

Bali’s dry season is between April and October, typically the best time to visit to enjoy dry weather. The months of April, May, September, and October are great months to find reduced rates and fewer people aka less crowded beaches and roads. And the traffic in Bali is no joke. It’s insane.

I visited in July which is considered one of the best times to visit Bali in terms of weather but it ended up monsoon-ing in Uluwatu basically during our entire time here. Honestly, there’s not much to do in Uluwatu if it’s storming so pray for good weather when you visit!

How to Get to Uluwatu

Uluwatu is located about 45 minutes from Denpasar International Airport (DPS). You can book a Grab or hire a driver. Contact your accommodation to set you up with airport transportation. They can usually provide this and you’ll have someone waiting for you with your name on a sign.

Traffic in Bali is insane at times. Keep this in mind if you plan on visiting nearby cities.

How to Get Around Uluwatu

The easiest and most efficient way to get around Uluwatu is to rent a motor scooter. However, if you are not comfortable with your scooter-driving abilities ( like me ) use Grab, Gojek, or a private driver to get around.

Both Grab and Gojek are essentially like Uber in Western countries. This is how I got around Bali most of the time. If you want a day full of activities, I suggest hiring a private driver. This will be most efficient and hiring a driver for the day in Bali is affordable.

Located very close to its namesake beach, Padang Padang Inn offers great location and for a great price. The space itself is modern, stylish, and clean. The onsite pool is also a great respite after a long day of surfing, swimming, and climbing all those steps to and from the beach.

Best Airbnb in Uluwatu – Alfiia’s Place

Alfiia’s Place Best Guesthouse in Uluwatu

Alfiia and her husband own an amazing Airbnb in Uluwatu and are absolutely brilliant hosts. They have a large property with comfortable rooms and lots of great extras like a pool, BBQ, and workout area. The public outdoor kitchen and coffee area was a personal favorite of mine.

Best Hostel in Uluwatu – SR Hostel Uluwatu

SR Hostel Uluwatu best hostels in Uluwatu

SR Hostel Uluwatu is located relatively far away from the beaches, but I wouldn’t count it out. SR provides more than enough to make your vacation in Uluwatu unforgettable! We’re talking shuttles, bar crawls, club nights, scooter rentals, and a free buffet every night . Hard to beat that kind of deal.

SR Hostel Uluwatu is one of our favourites in Uluwatu but they’re not taking guests right now. We’re not sure if they’re closed for good but we hope they’ll come back soon.

1. Grab the best pizza in Uluwatu at Doppio Zero

I’m going to give full disclosure right now: my girlfriend, who was with me in Uluwatu, is a passionate Italian who can’t resist the temptations of cheese and carbs. At every Italian restaurant in Uluwatu we passed, she would insist on going. For a moment there, I thought my trip in Uluwatu was about to become a dedicated pizza tour.

But in the end, my girlfriend and I ended up going to the same place over and over again: Doppio Zero . The tastefully designed space – a mix of sleek and rustic decor – initially caught our eye. The excellent food, full-bar, and amazing service kept us coming back.

doppio zero best restaurants in uluwatu

Honestly, we loved this place so much that we went there every day, be it for a pizza or just to have a glass of wine with the owner, Luigi. Maybe it was the copious limoncello shots he fed us, but it was a very easy talking to him.

Doppio Zero is located on the right just before you’d normally turn off the main road to Blue Point from Jalan Pantai Padang-Padang.

  • Watch out for: Fresh ingredients, most of which are sourced locally.
  • Insider Tip: Go during happy hour (times vary) for buy one-get one free drink specials.

2. Run away to Nyang Nyang Beach

Without a doubt, Nyang Nyang is the absolute best beach in Uluwatu ; NAY one of the best beaches in all of Bali. It’s perfect white sands stretch on for almost 2 kilometers and are touched by some of the most beautiful turquoise water you’ll see in Bali. This place is an absolute gem and should be on everyone’s things to do in Uluwatu list.

Nyang Nyang Beach is located on the far southern edge of the Bukit Peninsula beyond Uluwatu Temple. You’ll drive about 5 minutes east from the latter before reaching the Nyang Nyang turnoff on the right. You’ll know you’ve arrived when you see a parking lot with a local warung and some construction on each side.

nyang nyang beach in uluwatu

After a 10-minute or so walk down a dirt road ( wear good shoes ), you should arrive at the beach and be greeted by splendor. More surprisingly is that you won’t be greeted by hordes of tourists either! Compared to Bali’s usual attractions, Nyang Nyang is very quiet. Come here, and you’ll have lots of space to lounge and just chill.

  • Watch out for: The makeshift huts on the beach. Perhaps a place to spend the night? (Maybe bring your backpacking tent just in case.)
  • Insider Tip: Don’t stop in the parking lot – you can actually drive a bit more down the dirt road.

3. Go to some local restaurants outside Uluwatu

The neighborhoods surrounding Uluwatu usually don’t get much attention. They’re pretty raw compared to Uluwatu and usually the latter looks pampered in comparison to the former. Most people just make a b-line through these areas in search of surf and beach clubs.

But there are some very good reasons to actually make an excursion out into the nether-regions of Uluwatu. For one, the food you find outside of the touristy areas is actually very good and often very inexpensive. Gone are the boutique cafes and delis; say hello to the warung culture.

street food in bali

Warungs are local food stalls, usually run by a family. They’re about as close to a mom n’ pop diner as you’re going to get and serve up some mean food. One of my favorites when I visit Uluwatu is a little place called Bakso Solo Baru . It’s a literal hole in the wall but they make bomb spicy chicken.

So be adventurous and try some food outside your comfort zone. Some may be surprised to know there is more to Balinese cooking than smoothie bowls and satay.

  • Watch out for: The crowds – lots of people next to a stand usually means good food.
  • Insider Tip: Not all street food is necessarily safe. Go easy at first and pick your location wisely.

4. Surf everywhere

You can’t visit Uluwatu and not consider surfing! The surf in Uluwatu is absolutely legendary and practically put the town on the map in the first place. Even if you’ve never surfed before, you should still consider a lesson or at least watching the pros from some lazy beach bar.

The surfing in Uluwatu is as diverse as it is epic. The waves come in all shapes and sizes here, from tubes that stretch on like highways to reasonable swells for beginners to behemoths that look like they could swallow the entire island. There’s a wave for everyone in Uluwatu and no one, regardless of their skill level, should feel left out.

surfing at balangan uluwatu

There are a ton of places to surf in Uluwatu but some do stand out. Suluban Beach gets some pretty gnarly waves and plenty of surfers looking to conquer them. Balangan is a more lowkey spot with some super long pipes. Nyang Nyang is a bit of a hidden gem that gets very few crowds and some excellent surfing conditions.

These are only a handful of the surfing locations in Uluwatu. Visit yourself and find your own favorite spot!

  • Watch out for: Coral reefs – they’re everywhere around Bali and can hurt a lot.
  • Insider Tip: Get the latest Uluwatu surf reports at magicseaweed.com !

5. Drop (not literally) by Karang Boma Cliff

The Karang Boma Cliff is a fantastic viewpoint. It offers a similar vista to the one at Uluwatu Temple but receives nowhere near as many visitors. This means one can actually enjoy this place without having to push and shove (which isn’t a good idea near cliffs anyways).

Karang Boma is located in-between Uluwatu Temple and Nyang Nyang Beach. The marker for the turnoff is pretty basic – pretty much a laminated sign that’s way too faded – so keep your eyes open. Once you hit the turn off, it’s about a 5 minute drive to the cliff.

drone shot karang boma cliff uluwatu

Bare in mind that some entrepreneurial locals have set up a toll gate of sorts before the viewpoint. They’ll ask you for 5,000 rupiah to continue down the road and there doesn’t seem to be a way around. In my experience, the locals are only there later in the day though when it’s busier. If you arrive at sunrise or early in the morning, you may get there before anyone sees you.

  • Watch out for: The edge because there’s practically no fences or protection.
  • Insider Tip: There are some pretty cool photo opportunities here so bring that camera you’ve been traveling with as well.

6. Get a sundowner at my favorite bar in Uluwatu – Sunset Point

I love this place. It is my favorite bar in all of Bali. On an island where pretension, excess, and vanity can reel their ugly heads, this place feels authentic to me for some reason.

Sunset Point is simple on paper: a wooden bar, a handful of picnic tables, a large collection of beanbag chairs, and a great view. It follows a pretty common trend that you see elsewhere in Bali: that if you build a place somewhere beautiful and have Bintang, the people will come.

sunset bar in uluwatu

But there’s something about this bar in Uluwatu that makes it special. Maybe it’s the remote location; perhaps it’s the strings of christmas lights that remind me of my backyard; or it could be the laidback crowds it attracts; but I just feel this place.

Oh and the sunset views are indeed some of the best in Uluwatu. That goes without saying.

  • Watch out for: The puppies; I hope they never grow up.
  • Insider Tip: Try and arrive early and get a seat at the front near the cliffs.

uluwatu bali places to visit

Wanna know how to pack like a pro? Well for a start you need the right gear….

These are packing cubes for the globetrotters and compression sacks for the  real adventurers – these babies are a traveller’s best kept secret. They organise yo’ packing and minimise volume too so you can pack MORE.

Or, y’know… you can stick to just chucking it all in your backpack…

7. See a kecak fire dance at Uluwatu Temple

This is probably one of the most touristy things to do in Uluwatu. People travel from all over Bali to see the sunset at Uluwatu Temple and many stick afterwards to see the Kecak Fire Dance performance.

Though it can be pretty busy, the kecak fire dance is pretty damn cool to watch. The performance involves about eighty people and zero musical instruments. A large group of seated men use their own vocals to produce a sort of rhythmic melody to which a group of costumed dancers perform to. The effect is very hypnotic and you’ll soon fall into a trance after listening long enough.

kecak fire dance, Uluwatu

Tickets can be bought at the offices of Uluwatu Temple or ahead of time with an organized tour. If you choose the latter, you’ll also get to see the temple itself as a part of the deal. Check out the deals for the fire dance here !

  • Watch out for: the monkeys – they’re deft thieves around the temple.
  • Insider Tip: consider buying your tickets ahead of time – most of the seats are reserved for organized tours.

8. Have a drink at Blue Point

It may be touristy as hell but I can’t resist going to the bars at Blue Point first thing when I arrive in Uluwatu. I grab a beer, find a good spot near the edge of the bar, and watch the surfers catch some waves as the sun sets. It’s one of the most timeless things to do in Uluwatu, and I always recommend that everyone do it at least once on a backpacking trip to Bali .

Just to be clear: when I use the term “Blue Point,” I am referring to the general area around Single Fin . Whilst Blue Point is the unofficial name for this place, Single Fin is probably the most well-known establishment around, not to mention one of the most famous beach clubs in Uluwatu.

suluban beach cave uluwatu

That being said, I usually don’t like hanging around Single Fin. It’s overpriced and there are plenty more bars down the cliffs that offer better views and prices. Pick any one of them and you’ll be sitting pretty.

If you’re feeling up to it, you should consider walking all the way down the steps to Suluban Beach . Located on the other side of an epic sea cave, Suluban is super intimate and a popular place at sunset. When the water’s low, you can also walk pretty far out into some tide pools!

  • Watch out for: The tides as Suluban Beach may not be accessible at when the water is high.
  • Insider Tip: Park back on Jalan Pantai Padang-Padang and walk to Blue Point to avoid paying for parking.

9. Make a road trip to Melasti Beach or Green Bowl

Visiting Uluwatu can sometimes be a bit hectic these days. No longer the remote, undiscovered corner of Bali, Uluwatu is becoming more developed and, as such, more crowded with people.

If you want to get away from the center of attention in Uluwatu, then consider driving to the far southern shores of the Bukit Peninsula. Aside from finding well-known oasi like Sundays Beach Club and Karma Beach Club , you’ll find some very nice beaches to go with them.

melasti beach uluwatu things to do

Green Bowl is probably one of the quietest beaches near Uluwatu. Due to its remote location, hardly anyone visits here aside from a couple of surfers or beach bums. Green Bowl Beach is small but if you’re looking for peace this is the place.

Melasti Beach is a relatively new development but is already grabbing people’s attention. The water here is a magnificent blue and the white cliff behind the beach are something to behold. Unlike Green Bowl Beach, there are actually some beach bars and restaurants at Melasti so you won’t have to worry about packing a lunch.

  • Watch out for: The lack of development at Green Bowl. There are no beach chairs, bean bags, bars, toilets, anything here.
  • Insider Tip: It’s possible to visit Melasti, Green Bowl, and maybe a beach club all in one day. Make it an epic road trip!

10. Join the hordes at Suka Espresso

Suka Espresso is a local legend that usually tops the lists of “Best Cafes in Uluwatu.” The hype is real too: the breakfast (served until 3pm!) is exceptionally good here. Suka uses very high quality ingredients and offers arguably some of the best food in Uluwatu and Bali.

Problem is the lines can be ridiculously long here. We’re talking brunch lines at noon in Portland, Oregon long. (For those who have never visited Portland, people go absolutely nuts for brunch in this town; I don’t make this comparison lightly.)

suka espresson cafe in uluwatu

If you want to get a table at Suka, you absolutely need to arrive early in the morning; I mean early. If you’re planning on arriving at 9am, then you’re already too late. Get there at 7:30am the moment the doors open – it’s the only way my friends.

  • Watch out for: The Banana Brulee Hotcakes, which look divine but are probably a major cause of diabetes.
  • Insider Tip: Suka Espresso also serves lunch/dinner and these aren’t slouches either.

11. Or have a more peaceful breakfast at Land’s End

If you want to have a nice, peaceful breakfast and don’t want to deal with the madness at Suka Espresso, there are other places to eat in Uluwatu. One of my favorite breakfast cafes in town is Land’s End . This small, unassuming cafe is easily overlooked but totally worth checking out.

Land’s End Cafe is simple: a cashier’s counter, a bathroom, a kitchen, and some wooden tables. The dishes on offer don’t seem that interesting either at first: just the usual fair of smoothie bowls, breakfast burritos, and espresso drinks.

smoothie bowl bali breakfast

But what Land’s End lacks in diversity they make up for in quality. The coffee is perfectly prepared, the food is made with 100% organic ingredients (and love), and the staff is very warm. To be honest, you couldn’t ask for much more out of a restaurant in Uluwatu.

  • Watch out for: The homemade truffles that come with coffee.
  • Insider Tip: Glutards will enjoy this place as it has a respectable gluten-free menu.

12. Spend the afternoon (or all day) at an extravagant beach club

It just wouldn’t be an  epic Bali itinerary without visiting some sort of beach club, right? Luckily, Uluwatu has plenty of these and most of them are worth spending the day (and night) at.

There are some staples to Uluwatu’s beach club scene. They are:

  • Ulu Cliffhouse: A hot-spot in Bali that is usually the center of conversations. Big, shiny, and often the first club in Uluwatu that everyone goes to.
  • Sundays Beach Club: A staple of the beach club scene with a long beach, elegant food, and languid vibes. A good place to run away to without leaving any luxuries behind.
  • OMNIA: A beach club that demands attention; not just because of its bold design but because of its “adults-only” policy. People come here to get wild and wild they get.
  • Karma Beach Club: A very secluded beach club hidden away below the cliffs and through the jungle. It actually requires a cable car to get to. It’s a pretty small space too, which means you’ll need to arrive early to get a chair.

13. Discover the secret Pantai Cemongkak

Pantai Cemongkak is one of my favorite beaches in Uluwatu for several reasons:

  • It’s strikingly beautiful: The crystal-clear water and white cliffs make it look like a remote Greek cove.
  • It’s close to Bingin Beach and Dreamland Beach: In fact, it’s right in-between the two and both are 5-10 minutes walk away.
  • It’s absolutely deserted: Seriously, I never see anyone here aside from a fisherman or two.

secret beach in uluwatu

So next time you’re visiting Pantai Bingin or Dreamland Beach, consider making a slight detour to Pantai Cemongkak. You’ll be shocked at how empty it is and, at the same time, how pretty the beach is.

  • Watch out for: The sun – there’s not much shelter here aside from some ruined beach shacks.
  • Insider Tip: Since there is no development at Cemongkak, be sure to eat in Dreamland or Bingin Beach before.

14. Spend the day at Balangan (and don’t forget the cliff at sunset)

If you’re looking for one beach in Uluwatu that has a little bit of everything, Pantai Balangan is an excellent choice. It has great restaurants, beach bars, not too many people, some great little walks, and, of course, is gorgeous. What more could you want from it?

There are plenty of things to do at Balangan Beach. Some of the best surfing in Uluwatu is here If you’re not up for surfing, there are lounges and umbrellas around for beach bums and a Bintang is never hard to find either.

balangan beach viewpoint uluwatu bali

On a slightly odder note, one of my favorite things to do in Uluwatu is to visit the New Kuta Golf Course. This is not because I necessarily like to play golf (I really don’t) but because I like to walk around the grounds. Located on the edges of the cliffs of Uluwatu, this course may have one of the prettiest views in the world. Plus, I like to yell “FOUR” and fuck with the golfers a little.

  • Watch out for: The cliff viewpoint to the north of Balangan – this is a great place to watch the sunset.
  • Insider Tip: There is a trail leading up to the New Kuta Golf course directly from the beach. Just look for the stairs.

15. See a cultural show at Garuda Vishnu Kencana Park

Garuda Visha Kencana is a cultural park that is mostly known for the gigantic statue that stands in the middle of it. The colossus, which stands 120 meters high, depicts the Hindu god Vishnu riding his trusty steed, the winged beast Garuda. (Fun fact: the Gardu-Vishnu is higher than the Statue of Liberty.)

The cultural park also holds daily cultural shows for visitors. These shows are careful recreations of traditional Balinese dances and performances, like the Barong Dance , and usually include 20 or more performers. For those who are interested in Balinese dance, which is pretty cool actually, attending one of these is a great opportunity.

cultural show in uluwatu garuda vishnu

Admittedly, there isn’t a whole lot else to do in Garuda Vishnu Kencana. When I visited, I got the feeling that the park was only halfway done. There were times when I felt like the staff just didn’t have their heart in it as well.

  • Watch out for: the parades – there’s usually a couple of small ones per day.
  • Insider Tip: if you just want to see the statue, don’t bother entering the park – you can see easily from outside.

16. Chill out at Padang Padang Beach

Pantai Padang Padang is one of the most beloved beaches in Uluwatu that attracts all kinds of travelers. Whilst hanging out here, I saw families playing with their kids, Brazilians playing fresco , and backpackers sharing beers; all in one place. Padang Padang is just an easy beach to visit, plain and simple.

padang padang beach uluwatu bali

Padang Padang Beach is easy to get for that matter as well. It’s located right off the main road and you can actually see the beach itself from a bridge overhead. There’s a dedicated parking lot across the street from the entrance that charges a reasonable 5,000 rupiah.

Note that you will have to pay another 10,000 rupiah to enter the beach itself.

  • Watch out for: The satay – make sure it’s cooked thoroughly and correctly.
  • Insider Tip: Head to nearby Thomas Beach if you want a little space. It’s larger and usually pretty calm.

17. Find the sea cave at Pantai Tegal Wangi

There is a pretty cool sea cave located at Pantai Tegal Wangi that makes for some great photos. At sunset, the cave is particularly beautiful as the westward-facing cave lights up wonderfully at this time. For Instagrammers in Bali, this is a great spot to drop by and a welcome break from the usual tree swings and temple settings ( don’t be these people please ).

Pantai Tegal Wangi is located on the edge of Uluwatu and is actually quite close to Jimbaran. It’s a bit out of the way and I suggest that trippers use some sort of navigation app like Maps.Me or Google Maps to get there.

what to do in uluwatu at sunset pantai tengel wangi

Once you arrive at Pantai Tegal Wangi, go for a mission to find the sea cave! (I won’t spoil it for you ;)) Feel free to take a break whenever and enjoy the scenery as well. Tegal Wangi is a very popular place to catch the sunset and having a Bintang here at the end of the day is just as rewarding as finding that cave.

  • Watch out for: The small temple complex that marks the entrance of the beach. It’s called Pura Segara.
  • Insider Tip: bring beer with you if you want one because the vendors at Tegal Wangi usually run out fast.

18. Head to Jimbaran for fresh seafood

Uluwatu is technically right next to the ocean (no shit Ralph…) but that doesn’t mean it has the best catches of the day. Whilst there is some fresh seafood caught around Uluwatu, most of it actually comes from neighboring Jimbaran.

fresh seafood in jimbaran

Jimbaran, located north of Uluwatu, is famous for its seafood restaurants. A lot of people actually travel to Jimbaran from all over Bali just to eat fresh fish . The quality of the catch is that good and you can find just about anything here, from grilled mahi-mahi to sushi to bakar (fried).

So if you really want the best fish in Uluwatu, you shouldn’t necessarily stay in town. Take the short trip north to Jimbaran and really treat yourself.

  • Watch out for: Fresh red snapper – the most delicious of fish in the ocean.

19. Join a CrossFit Class at Bambu Fitness

Even on vacation, you don’t wanna miss out on getting your workout in. In Uluwatu, Bambu Fitness is a beautiful and tropical gym offering all types of classes, personal training sessions and body building options.

Filled with the high-quality equipment, and led by excellent, experienced trainers, it is one of the best places to get your pump on in Uluwatu.

Looking for some more detailed information for your next holiday in Uluwatu? There lots more useful advice located just below!

When to Travel to Uluwatu

Uluwatu has a wonderful climate – not too hot, not too cold, and rarely too wet. It is located on one of the most luxurious and beautiful islands in the world after all, one that is famous for its regularly amazing weather.

Winters in Uluwatu (May-October) are the dry season. Temperatures around this time are lower than usual but still very comfortable at around 28 Celsius or 82 Fahrenheit. Rain is very infrequent during these months, which means that there can be water shortages. Please be mindful of your water consumption in Uluwatu while visiting.

The surf in Uluwatu is also best during the dry winter months. During this time, the waves reach their legendary heights, which means the surfers will be out in droves.

dreamland beach when to visit uluwatu

Summers in Uluwatu (November-April) are hotter and more rainy than winter, but neither of these are ever extreme. Although Uluwatu gets a fair bit of rain (it is still tropical) it receives far less precipitation than the rest of the island. It’s location on the arid Bukit Peninsula makes it drier than other places in Bali.

Honestly, one could visit Uluwatu at any time of the year. The weather is nice year round and there’s always something going on.

If you wanted to avoid the crowds, you will have to stick to the (short) shoulder seasons. April and October are good months as there usually isn’t too many people or high prices.

How to Travel to Uluwatu

Uluwatu and the Bukit Peninsula are located on the far southern tip of the island. Outside of the far north, traveling to Uluwatu from most of Bali’s top destinations should be painless. Granted, you’ll have to deal with Bali’s torturous traffic but this comes with the territory.

Most people travel to Uluwatu by private car or taxi. By far, these are the most convenient form of transport in Bali because they are relatively quick and affordable.

drone shot of melasti beach uluwatu

You can arrange a private transfer to Uluwatu in many ways. You can either have your previous accommodation in Bali arrange one for you, use a ride-share app like Grab or Gojek or hail a taxi (the worst choice).

If you have your own form of transport i.e. a scooter or car than just remember to be careful when driving to Uluwatu. Traffic can be very bad near the Jimbaran area, especially around 5 pm when everyone is heading to Uluwatu Temple for the sunset.

To get a better idea of how long it takes and how much it costs to arrive in Uluwatu, refer below to the following estimates:

  • Kuta to Uluwatu: 30 minutes – 100,000 rupiah / $7
  • Ngurah Rai Airport to Uluwatu : 30 minutes – 100,000 rupiah / $7
  • Sanur to Uluwatu: 45 minutes – 150,000 rupiah / $10
  • Canggu to Uluwatu: 1 hour – 200,000 rupiah / $14
  • Ubud to Uluwatu: 1.5 hours – 250,000 rupiah / $18
  • Padang Bai to Uluwatu: 1.5 hours – 250,000 rupiah / $18
  • Amed to Uluwatu: 2.5 hours – 400,000 rupiah / $28

Traveling from Uluwatu to either Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Penida is very easy! Just head to Sanur and catch one of the many ferries. You can buy tickets ahead of time with Direct Ferry .

How to Get Around Uluwatu

There is really only one way to get around Uluwatu and that’s by scooter. Having your own scooter will allow you the most freedom for the least amount of money. You will need to be mindful of the road as always, but with the usual precautions you’ll get to experience Uluwatu to the fullest.

You can usually rent a scooter in Uluwatu at your hotel. The proprietors usually have some sort of contact – be it a business or just a local with a bike – and should be able to organize something for you.

how to get around uluwatu scooters

If your hotel or villa in Uluwatu should strike out in arranging a scooter, then there are plenty of independent rental agencies around town. Just go for a walk and start looking. Don’t pay anything over 60,000-70,000 rupiah per day.

It must be said though that riding a scooter in Uluwatu is just as dangerous as anywhere else in Bali. Please be smart and drive safely while you’re visiting. This means:

  • ALWAYS wear your helmet.
  • Never drink and drive.
  • Don’t take blind corners too fast.
  • Being mindful of road conditions and debris.
  • Driving aggressively or recklessly.

If you don’t want to ride a scooter, there are some more options of getting around Uluwatu but they aren’t as convenient. You could walk but the distances will be enormous. Or you could hire a private driver but I only recommend this if you’re willing to spend the extra $25-$30 per day.

Also, be aware that whilst ride-shares are easy to organize to Uluwatu they are not easy to organize in Uluwatu. For one reason or another, the area is often devoid of Gojecks or Grabs, which makes them an unreliable form of transport.

The Best Bars and Restaurants in Uluwatu

When I first visited Uluwatu, the clubs were just being built; ramshackle beach shacks and bars were the overwhelming majority of “business.”

Nowadays, there are all kinds of cafes and restaurants in Uluwatu. Fancy bistros, quaint cafes, international delicatessens, local warungs; all of these can be found in abundance in Uluwatu at the moment.

Beach Club, Uluwatu

I find Uluwatu’s restaurant scene to be more low key than those in Seminyak or Nusa Dua. Chalk it up to the chronically chilled-out surfer culture if you’d like but, for whatever reason, you shouldn’t have to dress up or look the nines if you want a good meal.

That being said, there are definitely some classy joints here. The opulent beach clubs in Uluwatu , like Sunday’s Beach Club, Ulu Cliffhouse, and OMNIA, are prime examples of how exclusive Uluwatu’s nightlife can be. But getting into these just requires a little extra money and time in front of the mirror.

To give you an idea of where to eat and drink in Uluwatu here are some of our favorite establishments:

  • Land’s End Cafe – best breakfast in Uluwatu
  • Suka Espresso – best coffee in Uluwatu
  • Doppio Zero – best Italian in Uluwatu
  • Sunset Point – chillest bar in Uluwatu
  • Ulu Cliffhouse – best nightlife in Uluwatu
  • Aunty Warung – best local food in Uluwatu
  • El Kabron – fanciest meal in Uluwatu
  • Bingin Bagus Seafood BBQ – best beach food in Uluwatu

Here are some quick answers to common questions about what to do and see in Uluwatu.

What are the top things to do in Uluwatu?

Spend the day at Nyang Nyang, the best beach in Uluwatu maybe even the whole of Bali. The white sands and turquoise waters are absolute paradise!

What are some things to do in Uluwatu at night?

Explore the diverse nightlife of Uluwatu from exclusive beach clubs, to local Warungs, it has it all. We love Sunset Point as it’s proper chill and obviously great for sunsets!

What are some fun things to do in Uluwatu?

So many! After you’ve seen Uluwatu Temple at sunset then stick around for a unique Kecak Fire Dance performance, it’s freaking insane!

What is there to do in Uluwatu for the day?

Mate, there’s too much! Chill on the beaches, hang at the cliffs at sunset, hit up the bars, restaurants and clubs. There’s also heaps of culture and it’s sick for surfing as well!

Get Insured Before Traveling to Uluwatu

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

Before I sign off here, I would like to remind everyone visiting Bali to be very careful when it comes to drinking. There is a lot of bootleg alcohol on the island – mixed sometimes with dangerous amounts of methanol – and you DO NOT want to drink the wrong batch.

Buy liquor from trusted vendors and don’t accept drinks from random dudes. Go to legit bars in Bali and not to roadside shacks. Sticking to bottled Bintang beer is a sure way to avoid this shit as well.

  • UPDATED: 01/01/2023

Uluwatu is located on the southernmost point of Bali Island. In comparison to other popular tourist areas of Bali like Canggu , Seminyak, or even Ubud , it is a little more residential and peaceful. Uluwatu hosts some of Bali's most gorgeous beaches and the most spectacular sunsets. Additionally, Uluwatu has the best waves for surfers. In this article, we'll discover the 15 best things to do in Uluwatu, whether you are coming for a few days or just a day trip.

To visit most of the locations I list below, I suggest staying in Uluwatu for at least two full days. Beaches, viewpoints, cliffs, and temples are among the best places to visit in the area. I also share some advice on the best places to eat and stay in Uluwatu.

Take a look at the following selection of hotels in Uluwatu, one of the greatest places to stay in Bali, if you plan to spend several days in this region. I’ll start by stating the hotel where I would stay. I will then suggest other options for low, medium, high, and extremely high budgets.

I recommend Oceanna Hotel , a small establishment with just five rooms and stunning ocean views. The rooms are generously sized, incredibly bright, and exquisitely designed. The infinity pool, which offers stunning sunset views, is the nicest feature of this hotel. Additionally, beaches like Thomas Beach and Padang Padang are close by.

  • Telaga Sari , my hotel ($$).

Things to do in Uluwatu, Bali

Are you ready to discover the 15 best things to do in Uluwatu? A journey to Bali would not be complete without visiting this area of the island. Let’s begin!

1. Uluwatu Temple (Bali)

things to do in Uluwatu

It is one of the few touristic temples in this part of Bali and a must-see in Uluwatu, but its setting makes it one of the most stunning and mystical on the island. The actual temple is compact. Since the Uluwatu Temple is perched on top of a 70-meter-high cliff, it is the surrounding natural landscape that captures people’s attention. The scenery is lovely.

I recommend visiting the temple just before dusk. Not only will the lighting be more lovely, but there will also be a Kecak show, a traditional Balinese dance, celebrated every day at 6:00 p.m. The kecak show tickets can be purchased online in advance . If you prefer buying them in person, they must be purchased around one to two hours in advance.

Uluwatu Temple Entrance fee: 30k IDR.

🏥 Remember that it is very important to travel with the best travel insurance for Indonesia , since you never know if you are going to suffer any inconveniences during your stay. Without adding a lot of money to the final budget, you can go with the peace of mind that if something happens to you, all your expenses will be covered, as well as having a team of people who will help you. I always use and recommend HeyMondo travel insurance, where I can offer you a 5% discount on your travel insurance. .

2. Karang Boma Cliff (Uluwatu Cliff)

uluwatu cliff

The Uluwatu Cliff, also known as Karang Boma Cliff, is one of Bali’s most well-known places and is located close to the Uluwatu Temple. The cliff is around 70 meters high and offers stunning views of the Indian Ocean. This viewpoint is a terrific choice to enjoy a stunning sunset if you are not heading to the prior temple at that time. Additionally, going at sunrise is strongly advised.

3. Balangan Beach Viewpoint

uluwatu, bali

This Beach is a great place in Uluwatu for surfing, swimming, or simply lounging in the sun. There are also a number of beach bars there where you can get something to eat or drink. Nevertheless, the cliff to its right offer stunning views of Belangan Beach. At sunset, you can enjoy the breathtaking view. Naturally, more people are out and about at this time of day. There are also many couples taking wedding pictures!

4. Visit Nyang Nyang Beach, one of the best things to do in Uluwatu

nyang nyang

Nyang Nyang is one of the most beautiful beaches in Uluwatu. It is almost 2 kilometers long and is located parallel to a limestone cliff full of vegetation. The sand is clear, and the water is a very beautiful blue. This beach is really large, therefore you will not find many people concentrated in one particular area.

Previously, you had to descend and then ascend about 500 steps to get to Nyang Nyang Beach. However, now you can ride your motorbike down to the beach (it is not possible by car). Include this location on your list of things to do in Uluwatu and take advantage of the sand and sea; you won’t regret it!

Don’t forget to take a seat on the cliff before or after visiting the beach to take advantage of the breathtaking views of the water below. They are incredible! There is an aircraft parked right there that was formerly accessible from outside the property. However, it is currently closed.

5. Abandoned Plane, a unique place to visit in Uluwatu

things to do in uluwatu

Something different to do in Uluwatu (Bali) is to visit the famous abandoned plane. The reality is that it is not known what this plane is doing there. I’ve heard that someone bought it to build a restaurant inside, but for now the project seems to be on hold. You cannot go down to the ground where the plane is parked, but you can see it and take a photo from above.

As there are other abandoned planes in Bali, make sure the position you enter on the map corresponds to the plane that is at Uluwatu. I advise doing this because I almost got confused when I visited the plane from Canggu.

Update: The plane is no longer abandoned and has become the AirCrew Sensation Bali attraction, a place where you can experience a virtual flight and see the inside of a Boeing 737. If you are an aviation lover, it can be an interesting visit.

6. Bingin Beach, a wonderful beach to spend the day

things to do in Uluwatu

This beach is one of the best beaches in Uluwatu to enjoy a good beach session. It stands out for having a lot of buildings along the shore. Although this may set you back, the reality is that the combination of nature with the houses built on the cliff is worth seeing. It has several very cool bars and restaurants to have a drink, go to the bathroom, or spend some time in the shade.

Once you leave the motorcycle in the parking lot, you will have to walk through some narrow streets and go down around 100 stairs. Going down isn’t hard. Go up is a bit more taxing on the body, but it’s worth it!

Sunset Point Pantai Cemongkak

Sunset Point Pantai Cemongkak, a lovely location to view the sunset, is not far from Bingin Beach. A grassy meadow can be found atop a cliff. It’s a terrific location to visit and engage in some activity before the sun totally sets. Don’t overlook the stunning views of the beach that are located beneath this location.

7. Thomas Beach, one of the best beaches in Uluwatu

things to do in Uluwatu

This Beach is one of the top beaches in Bali . It is fairly broad and has both white sand and crystal-clear water. If you want to spend some time alone, you can either bargain for a lesser fee or hire sun loungers with umbrellas for the entire day. Surfboards and paddle boards can also be rented. The beach includes a lot of locations where you can dine and drink, as well as kiosks where you can buy coconuts and water.

It is the perfect beach if you want to spend the entire day there. Like many other beaches in Uluwatu, getting there requires taking a few steps down, then back up. Don’t forget to pack sunscreen and a hat!

8. Suluban Beach, great for surf lovers

Suluban Beach

Suluban Beach is one of Uluwatu and Bali’s most beautiful and picturesque beaches. The limestone cliffs have created a sort of tunnel that must be passed through in order to reach the sea. In Uluwatu, it is also one of the most well-liked surfing locations. If you enjoy playing this sport, this beach will undoubtedly become one of your favorites on the island.

9. Single Fin, Uluwatu (Bali)

Single Fin

I recommend visiting Single Fin, one of Uluwatu’s most well-known bars, if you’re searching for a spot to enjoy a drink while watching an amazing sunset and even take a dip in the pool. Due to this bar’s proximity to Suluban Beach, you can also see surfers catch waves. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are available. They host parties each Sunday.

10. Visit Melasti Beach, one of the most beautiful ones in Bali

melasti beach

If you want to spend the entire day at the beach, Melasti Beach is a fantastic alternative. The water is magnificent, and it is situated near Uluwatu’s southernmost point. It is much more stunning due to the fact that it is surrounded by cliffs. To get to Melasti Beach, unlike other beaches in Uluwatu, you don’t have to go down countless flights of stairs, which is another advantage. It won’t be an issue for you to ride down on your motorcycle and leave it parked.

palmilla bali

There are a number of warungs (local restaurants) on the beach where you may get something to eat and drink. You can also decide to visit a beach club like Palmilla Bali or Tropical Temptation if you want a more intimate experience. Last but not least, be sure to take in the views of the beach from the nearby cliffs.

Melasti Beach Entrance Fee: 10k IDR.

11. Green Bowl Beach, Uluwatu

things to do in Uluwatu

This beach is located right next to Melasti Beach. Unlike the previous one, to get to this little piece of paradise, you will have to go down a 75-meter drop. Of course, you can enjoy the beach almost by yourself since few people are encouraged to go up and down so many stairs. If you decide to be one of those brave ones, don’t forget to bring enough water and something to eat, since you won’t find any kind of food stand on the beach.

12. Padang Padang Beach

padang padang

Padang Padang Beach is one of Uluwatu’s most stunning beaches (Bali). It has lovely corners and is divided into a number of coves by enormous boulders. But, at least at the time we visited, it was also one of the busiest beaches. In addition, the area is limited due to its small size.

Although I do not advise spending the day at this beach, I do advise visiting because, as I have already mentioned, it is really lovely. Go early if you want to fully appreciate this gorgeous corner. There are a few stairs to descend in order to reach there, but I assure you that they are not many.

One of the best hotels in Bali , Dreamsea Bali , is located close to this beach.

13. Sundays Beach Club, my favorite beach club in Uluwatu

sundays beach club

There are various beach clubs in Uluwatu (Bali), but Sunday’s Beach Club is my favorite. It’s truly amazing! The finest thing to do in Uluwatu if you want to relax on the beach with delicious meals, fun water activities, and all the conveniences is to go to this beach club. I heartily endorse it.

The best thing about Sundays Beach Club is its location. It is located on the most beautiful beach I have visited in Bali. If you are looking for white sand and crystal clear blue water, you can find it here. To access, you have to pay IDR 500k, of which 200k is charged as admission and 300k is credit to spend on food and drinks.

The entrance includes a deck chair and towel per person, wifi and kayak rental, snorkel gear and a paddle surf board. A bonfire is lit every day at sunset.

14. Pantai Tegal Wangi Cave

Pantai Tegal Wangi Cave

Tegal Wangi is not particularly known for being a swimming or tanning beach. The most impressive feature in this area of Uluwatu is the tiny cave that is built into the beach’s rocks. If you wish to go there, walk a short distance after you descend the beach’s steps. I don’t advise going if the tide is high because it can be hazardous.

A great idea in Tegal Wangi is to observe the sunset from the cliff’s edge. Purchase a drink and an ear for yourself, then savor the moment.

15. Visit GWK Cultural Park, one of the best things to do in Uluwatu

uluwatu bali

Visit the GWK cultural park if you’re seeking for something different to do in Bali . Sculptures and other works of art, exhibits, and performances can be found here. The Garuda Wisnu Kencana monument, which stands more over 120 meters tall, is the park’s most recognizable places. It may be seen from different locations in Bali, like Canggu. You can purchase your GWK tickets here .

Where to eat in Uluwatu

mana uluwatu

Like many other parts of the island, Uluwatu has a great deal to offer in terms of food. There are several cafeterias and restaurants in this area, both local and international, where you can enjoy delicious food.

Some of Uluwatu’s best restaurants are listed below:

  • Mana Uluwatu: restaurant and bar with pool where you can enjoy beautiful views.
  • D’alvie Kitchen: delicious local food.
  • The Loft: healthy and delicious food.
  • Suka Espresso: one of the most popular.
  • Kelly’s Warung: eat with sea views!
  • La Baracca: best pizza in Uluwatu.
  • BGS Uluwatu: if you want a good cup of coffee.

Best Things To Do in Uluwatu, Bali (2024)

Wondering about the best things to do in Uluwatu, Bali? We got you!

The Bukit Peninsula (commonly referred to as Uluwatu) consists of much more than just the famous Uluwatu cliffs. Everything south of Denpasar Airport is considered to be the Bukit Peninsula.

Most travelers spend their entire trip north of this area in more popular areas like Kuta, Canggu , or Ubud . While these are beautiful Bali areas worth visiting , Uluwatu has some of the best beaches on the island and some of the most fun places to visit in Bali.

uluwatu bali places to visit

So it’s safe to say that you don’t want to skip out on Uluwautu!

11 Top Things To Do In Uluwatu

After exploring the entire peninsula, here are all of the best things to do in Uluwatu, including a few places to each and tips for getting around the area.

Let’s dive in!

1. Watch the Sunset at Padang Padang Beach

Though the beach is smaller than we expected, Padang Padang is one of the best beaches in Bali for sunset.

uluwatu bali places to visit

It’s also a great place to come and explore during low tide since you can walk out into the ocean over 100 meters without the water coming past your knees and walk below the coastal cliffs.

The surf break at Padang Padang is known across the globe as the “Bali Pipeline”– a near-perfect tube for advanced surfers. If you are a beginner, we recommend visiting one of the other beaches in Uluwatu without such shallow reefs.

P.S. There is an entry fee of 15K ($1), and you must walk down over 100 steps to get to the shore.

2. Learn to Surf at Balangan Beach

uluwatu bali places to visit

Balangan Beach is one of the longest beaches in South Bali, and it’s an excellent place for anyone to hang out, but it’s especially great for travelers hoping to move from beginner waves to intermediate surfing.

Come at high tide for the best surfing. You can rent a board for just 30K IDR/hour ($2)!

At Balangan Beach, there are a variety of restaurants right on the beach and plenty of vendors to browse through souvenirs. The only downside to this beach is the rocky ocean floor. If you want to swim, you must bring some reef shoes!

Overall, this beach is fantastic and makes for a great afternoon!

3. Stay at a Luxury Resort (Without the Luxury Price).

Uluwatu is full of stunning luxury resorts, so if you’re looking for where to stay in Uluwatu , you’ll have many options.

These beautiful villas are among the best parts of staying in the area, and the best part is that you can find 4- and 5-star resorts for the price of a motel room in Europe and Asia!

The Elementum in Dreamland and Ulu Segaru Resort in Nusa Dua are two of the best, affordable resorts to check out. Both have beautiful pools, suites, and tons of amenities.

4. Visit Karang Boma Cliff

uluwatu bali places to visit

The cliffs you’ll see in Uluwatu are absolutely ridiculous, and none are more impressive than Karang Boma Cliff.

Suspended hundreds of feet above the sea, Karang Boma Cliff is your chance to see one of the most dramatic cliffs in Bali! If you’re feeling brave, you can walk right up to the edge (just be careful with no barriers)! There is a viewpoint on the other side of the main cliff that allows for some epic photo-ops.

To many’s surprise, this place isn’t crowded, is easy to find by motorbike, and is close to all the beaches listed above.

5. Uluwatu Temple & The Kecek Fire Dance

uluwatu bali places to visit

From Karang Boma Cliff, it’s just a short drive (or walk) to Uluwatu Temple. The views are equally as beautiful, with the addition of the Temple perched right at the edge of the cliffs.

Be aware that entering the temple area requires a 30K IDR ($2) fee.

Uluwatu Temple is famous for hosting the Balinese Kecak Fire Dance at sunset every night. It’s touristy but an iconic thing to do in Uluwatu, so consider buying a ticket and staying to watch!

6. Go for a Swim at Dreamland Beach

Dreamland Beach is very touristy, so it can be crowded in the evenings, and lots of people come here to hang out at Klapa Beach Club during the day.

However, the good part is that the waves start pretty far from shore, and the floor is soft and sandy. This makes it relaxing and enjoyable to swim!

It’s important to remember that you can only go swimming during high tide at Dreamland since there will be waves (and surfers) that make it relatively unsafe.

To find out the tide forecast for today, check Magic Seaweed!

7. Get a Smoothie at Bingin’ Beach

uluwatu bali places to visit

Bingin’ Beach requires a little bit of work to get to (almost 200 steps down to the beach), but after arriving, you’ll be rewarded with soft sand, little crowds, and warungs serving delicious smoothies on the beach.

You can surf, but that’s not why we recommend visiting.

Bingin’ Beach is a laid-back, boho-style beach that’s a favorite among expats for kicking back and relaxing in the sun all day.

8. Relax in an Infinity Pool

uluwatu bali places to visit

Many resorts in Uluwatu are known for offering food and drinks next to their infinity pool, but a couple of places are also open to the public.

For example, Single Fin is an upscale restaurant & bar overlooking Uluwatu Beach. The bar is famous for its live music, surf watching, and a dreamy infinity pool. Single fin is expensive, but if you have the budget, it’s a beautiful venue to have a romantic dinner. They also have live music on weekends.

Another great spot is Mana Uluwatu , an affordable Latin American restaurant & bar.

uluwatu bali places to visit

The view is incredible, and they have an infinity pool overlooking the cliff, similar to Single Fin.

9. Explore the ‘Hidden’ Suluban Beach

Suluban is found in a minor breach between the Uluwatu cliffs. It’s super small but very beautiful and uniquely tucked between the cliffs.

It’s known as a ‘hidden’ beach,’ but that’s no longer the case at all. It’s extremely crowded, so you should make sure to get here early and don’t plan on spending the entire day here.

Yet it still gets five stars!

The surf here is pretty intense, so unless you’re experienced, leave it to the pros.

10. Enjoy Water Sports At Nusa Dua

uluwatu bali places to visit

Uluwatu’s east coast is significantly more calm than the west. But what it lacks in the surf, it makes up for with a huge variety of water sports! The best place to go for water sports is a few kilometers north of Nusa Dua Beach, in an area called Benoa Bay.

Many companies will take you parasailing, scuba diving, jet-skiing, tubing, deep-sea fishing, and more! Unfortunately, they are not the most inexpensive. You can expect a 15-minute parasailing ride to cost about 2,000,000 IDR ($100), but there are more affordable combo packages if you book online .

11. Visit the Hatch for late-night shenanigans

Hatch is a favorite of ex-pats and travelers in Uluwatu! They serve up delicious dishes and a groovy atmosphere. There are even themed events every night, including a rotating selection of things like Old School Hip Hop Mondays, Game Nights, Live Music on the weekends, and open-air markets.

How To Get Around Uluwatu, Bali

uluwatu bali places to visit

Rent A Motorbike

We cannot recommend renting a motorbike in Bali (especially for traveling around Uluwatu).

Everything here is very spread out, and you may have some trouble finding taxis at a moment’s notice.

One of the easiest ways to find a scooter is to book one online ( Bikago is a reputable company), but you can also find local rentals around, and even villas/resorts often have a few scooters on hand to rent out to their guests.

Expect to pay about 100K IDR/day ($5).

Taxis & Ridesharing Apps.

Uber is no longer operating in Bali, so tourists have to take local taxis or use alternative ride-sharing apps, such as Go-Jek or Grab, which are both readily accessible in Southeast Asia and available all around the island of Bali.

You can download the app and call a grab from anywhere. The price is about 50-75 cents per km, which makes it the most expensive form of transportation on the island. However, the price is still relatively cheap compared to hiring a personal driver for the day.

Final Thoughts On Uluwatu, Bali

Traveling to Uluwatu is an amazing experience, and we hope you have time to do all the best things in the area! It will be even more memorable if you have the budget to stay in a lovely villa with an ocean view!

uluwatu bali places to visit

If you only have time for one beach, make it Balangan Beach. Whether you want to sunbathe, surf, or have dinner on the water, it’s the best all-around beach. It’s also close enough to other popular areas in Bali that you can quickly stop here on a day trip to Uluwatu!

Every year, visitors travel to Uluwatu, Bali Indonesia for world-class surfing, cliffside temples, and white-sand beaches on the Indian Ocean. This Uluwatu Travel Guide will cover everything you need to know to plan your trip to Bali’s southern peninsula.

About Uluwatu, Bali Indonesia

Uluwatu is located on the southernmost tip of Bali, Indonesia, and is known for having incredible surf, beautiful beaches, jawdropping cliff views, and an overall laid-back ambiance.

The landscape is the perfect blend of lush jungle and rugged coastline. You never know when you’ll discover a charming little beach bar or a delicious cafe surrounded by greenery.

Uluwatu is more spread out than some of the other areas around Bali. There isn’t a traditional “downtown” area, so to speak, but visitors do tend to congregate around Single Fin Bar to socialize, watch the surfers, and enjoy the sunset.

Sunset at Single Fin, Uluwatu Bali Indonesia

How To Get To Uluwatu  From The Bali Airport

The easiest way to get from the Bali Airport to Uluwatu is by taxi. When you exit the airport at arrivals, you’ll see a stand where you can hire a taxi to Uluwatu on the Bukit Peninsula.

A taxi from the airport to Uluwatu will likely cost around 350K rupiah (about $25 USD) flat rate. You can also choose to have the taxi run the meter but this can be risky if you’re traveling at a high traffic time of day.

I’ve done it both ways and it can be hit or miss. If you happen to arrive at a low-traffic time of day, like early in the morning, the metered taxi can work out to be easier on the budget. But if you’d rather not risk it, the flat-rate taxis are also a good way to go.

If you’re coming from another part of Bali, your hotel or guest house can help you arrange a taxi transfer.

Getting Around Uluwatu

In most areas around Bali, you can use rideshare services like Grab or Gojek. Unfortunately , once you’re in the Bukit Peninsula, these services are much harder to use. The whole area is a “drop off only” zone so you’ll either have to take local taxis or rent a motorbike and drive yourself.

Not many areas of Uluwatu are walkable, so having a scooter is the best way to go. There are plenty of motorbike rental places around Uluwatu, but the easiest way to handle your Uluwatu scooter rental is through your accommodation.

Many guesthouses and hotels have scooter rental available at a better rate for guests and you won’t have to worry about picking up and dropping off the bike at another location.

Scooter rentals typically cost between 50K and 70K (about $3.50 – $5.00 USD) per day.

Things To Do In Uluwatu

Even though Uluwatu is known for having a peaceful atmosphere, there are still plenty of fun things to do. Make sure to check out these top Uluwatu activities and attractions when you visit.

Enjoy The Beaches In Uluwatu

You won’t have to look hard to find an incredible beach in Uluwatu. Most beaches feature white sand, clear blue water, and dramatic cliffs surrounding all sides.

Whether you’re interested in relaxing on the beach with a good book or hitting the waves with your surfboard, Uluwatu has no shortage of sunny stretches of paradise.

Go Surfing In Uluwatu

Uluwatu is known for being one of the best places to surf in Bali – and the world. Uluwatu is best for intermediate and experienced surfers since the waves can be powerful and are often crowded in this area.

Some of the most popular areas for surfing around Uluwatu

  • Suluban Beach: Hidden cave beach with access to surf near Single Fin Restaurant
  • Padang Padang: Best all-around surf spot with board rentals on the beach
  • Green Bowl: Remote beach on the south coast of the Bukit Peninsula with rock formations and waves
  • Dreamland: Popular surf spot for intermediate and advanced surfers with cliff views

If you’re a beginner interested in taking surfing lessons, you can rent a board and find an instructor at Padang Padang Beach. You can also consider booking a stay at an Uluwatu Surf Camp like Rapture or Padang Padang Surf Camp.

Surf spots in Uluwatu Bali

Visit The Uluwatu Temple For The Kecak Fire Dance

The Uluwatu Temple is located high on a cliff with panoramic views out to sea. In the evening, you can attend the Kecak Fire Dance , a performance which celebrates Balinese culture.

The Kecak Fire Dance uses dancing, chanting, costumes, and fire to tell the story of the Ramayana, a Hindu Epic. Set against a vibrant sunset, the Kecak Fire Dance at the Uluwatu Temple should definitely be on your Bali bucket list.

Sunset And Dancing At Single Fin

Single Fin is a popular bar located on the Uluwatu coast that’s known for being a top sunset spot. Make sure to stop by in the evenings to watch the surfers catch waves at Suluban and enjoy a cold one while the sky changes colors.

On Sunday nights, Single Fin is the place to be with live music and dancing!
