Thames Travel opens new Didcot depot

routeone Team

Go-Ahead-owned Thames Travel has opened a new low-carbon depot in Didcot, replacing its previous base in Wallingford.

Part of a £2.5m investment, the depot has a fully-equipped workshop, fuelling and washing facilities, and new office space.

It has energy-efficient lighting and will soon get solar panels.

The move from Wallingford is part of the operator’s strategy to boost the economic growth of Didcot.

Thames Travel Managing Director, Phil Southall, says: “Didcot is an exciting growth area in the county, and we are committed to ensuring we continue to play a key role in its success.

“We are proud to be a large and growing employer in the area, and to pay our colleagues above the Oxford Living Wage.

“Our depot move was an important strategic decision to ensure we are well placed to cater for the growth we are seeing both in Didcot itself, and across the surrounding employment hubs at Milton Park and Harwell Campus."

Thames Travel opens low-carbon Didcot depot

Thames Travel has unveiled a new, low-carbon depot in Didcot, which will act as a central hub for the firm’s growing number of staff and buses

Lord Bradshaw, Co-Chair of the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Party Committee on Transport, cut a ceremonial ribbon with Thames Travel Managing Director Phil Southall to officially open the new facility on Tuesday 30 April.

Thames Travel

The operator decided to move to Didcot from its former home in Wallingford to play a key part of the economic growth of the ‘garden town.’

The relocation is part of a £2.5m investment by Thames Travel in its fleet, infrastructure and people.

The depot in Collett, Didcot, incorporates a fully-equipped workshop, fuelling and washing facilities, newly-refurbished office space, and a large parking area for vehicles to be housed while not in service.

The building has been fitted with the latest energy-efficient LED lighting, and solar panels are due to be installed soon in partnership with Oxfordshire social enterprise Low Carbon Hub.

Thames Travel Managing Director, Phil Southall said: “Didcot is an exciting growth area in the county, and we are committed to ensuring we continue to play a key role in its success.

“We are proud to be a large and growing employer in the area, and to pay our colleagues above the Oxford Living Wage.

“Our depot move was an important strategic decision to ensure we are well placed to cater for the growth we are seeing both in Didcot itself, and across the surrounding employment hubs at Milton Park and Harwell Campus.”

Thames Travel unveils new Milton Park buses livery

Thames Travel has launched its newly branded Milton Park buses livery as part of a partnership with Milton Park.

It follows the introduction of substantial improvements to bus connectivity launched by Thames Travel and Milton Park in January, which includes new direct connections to Headington, Wantage and Grove and improved service to Oxford, Didcot Parkway and Abingdon.

This week Thames Travel unveiled three branded buses designed to highlight the services to passengers and celebrate the growing partnership with the Park.

Milton Park bus pass being used on new Thames Travel partnership buses

Further improvements are due to be introduced from April, including the establishment of a new direct service to southern areas of Didcot and the southern section of the Great Western Park development.

The services provide enhanced connectivity between Milton Park and major residential areas, rail services, and Oxford.

Milton Park employees can travel from anywhere in the Didcot area to Milton Park using their special employee tickets for a subsidised price of £20 per year.

As one of the leading science and technology communities in Oxfordshire and home to 250 companies, the partnership benefits the park’s occupiers, visitors, and local communities.

The new buses feature decals which show the what3words the routes’ start and finish points so passengers can easily find the pick-up and drop off locations.

what3words being used on the back of Thames Travel and Milton Park's new-buses

what3words is a free app that divides the world into three-metre squares and gives each one a unique address made of three words: a what3words address.

For example, the Didcot station bus stop is at ///regrowth.butterfly.presuming and ///local.courier.librarian for St Aldate’s in Oxford. All go to ///scores.honey.ambitions, which is the destination for the Park’s Innovation Centre. This may be a sign of things to come, with what3words innovative location mapping soon likely to become more integrated into transport journey planning.

There are 22 ultra-low emission Euro IV buses operating on the Milton Park routes between 6am and 11.30pm daily. They are all equipped with Wi-Fi and contactless payment solutions, with many also having USB charging sockets and audio-visual next-stop announcement systems.

Phil Southall, managing director of Thames Travel, said: “This represents the next step in our partnership with Milton Park and our collective investment, along with Oxfordshire County Council, in providing improved connectivity in Oxfordshire. The newly branded vehicles look fantastic and are designed to help improve awareness of the services within the community.

“The new service means Milton Park has unrivalled direct bus connections to a wider range of locations, with faster journey times and improved ticketing options, to make bus travel easier. We look forward to welcoming more passengers as lockdown restrictions begin to ease in the coming months.”

Thames Travel and Milton Park new bus liveries showing what3words-start and finish destinations

Veronica Reynolds, sustainable travel advisor, Milton Park, added: “At a time when people are starting to consider returning to work, they are also evaluating how they can travel around more comfortably, sustainability and economically. The unveiling of the buses’ new livery is a great alternative travel mode offering people the opportunity to relax, read or work on the bus while saving the average £162 per month[1] that it costs to keep a car on the road.

“Having more regular buses going between Oxford and the Park helps our customers to retain and attract staff. If you live in Didcot, switching to the bus means you can travel to and from Milton Park for just £20 a year, which means that we can help people get to work and save money.

“By taking cars off the road, we can all work towards improving air quality and reducing traffic congestion. We hope that people enjoy seeing the new livery and experiencing the enhanced services.”

Thames Travel is the sister company of Oxford Bus Company. It employs 150 staff and has a fleet of more than 60 vehicles, including 40 ultra-low emission models, operating in South Oxfordshire and Berkshire. The launch of the new services created 15 new jobs at Thames Travel’s low-carbon depot in Didcot.

With buses from Oxford to Milton Park every 30 minutes, this new Thames Travel and Milton Park partnership will benefit many people.

Samara has two main spots to wait for the bus depending on where you are going. Lots of information below but here is a website we found to check out schedules.  https://www.samarainfocenter.com/local-bus-schedule

Samara to San José

If you are going to San José  there is a direct bus, it will stop across from the Empresa Alfaro office in town. This location is indicated on the map above and the schedule for this bus can be found below. This is a really nice a/c bus. As of Aprils 2017 the price is 4265₡ and the trip takes about 5hrs.

San José to Samara

There is a bus that leaves the Terminal 7-10 two times per day: 12pm and 5pm. To Samara it’s about 5.5hrs and costs 4265₡ (2017).

Samara to Nicoya

For buses heading back to Nicoya  you can wait at a covered bus stop right at the exit of town – about 20 meters away from the Alfaro office. Have a look at the photos below to see this stop. This bus will pass La Bomba – which is where you need to get off for buses to Nosara , see below. As of 2016 the price is about 1800₡ and the trip takes 1.5hrs.

To/from Nosara:

To go between Samara and  Nosara  you need to head to “La Bomba” a few miles outside of Samara. This is basically a junction between Samara and Nosara.  When leaving Samara you can take the Nicoya bus and ask the driver to let you off here. Or, grab a taxi.  There is a covered bus stop there where you can wait for the bus to pass. There is a chance you will have to wait a bit here for a connecting bus and you can check the schedule posted on the Nicoya page to get a sense of when the respective bus will pass. La Bomba is about an hour away from Nicoya.

Liberia Airport to Samara

In Liberia the bus to Nicoya will pass by the airport very regularly. You can grab this bus to Nicoya and then from there you can switch to the bus to Samara. Have a look at the Nicoya page for the schedule to Samara.

What to do in Samara?

Lots to do around here: Dolphin Watching and Snorkeling , Night Time Turtle Watching , Stand Up Paddle Boarding  and much, much more!

Today, San José ( terminal 7 – 10) at 12am >>> Samara 5:15pm for 4435 colones. You can purchase the ticket on the second floor (be there early because the bus is quickly full, I traveled without a seat. I think some people had bought the ticket online)

' data-src=

Took bus with direction to Nicoya and got down to La Bomba. Paid 1000 colones. Samara is 5 km from there. Hitchiked but there is bus. Bus Nosara to Nicoya: Weekdays and Sat: 5am, 6 am, 7am, 12, 3:30 pm Sunday: 6,7,12 and 3 pm

' data-src=

Samara –> San José earlier this week. Departed at 9am (well, 9:15 in the end) and was at 7-10 by 14:30. Good trip. Most of the information above is still accurate, just a couple of points to note: -The front of the ticket office looks different and is now an Italian shop called ‘Salumi y formaggi’. The Alfaro agency on the side is still there and opens at 8am. -Departure times to San José are the same. -Alfaro uses the MiBus platform, but two passengers who purchased online never received QR code tickets. They weren’t allowed to board until they purchased new tickets. I purchased a ticket in dollars at the agency without issue. -Cost is higher than 4295 but still less than 5000. -The A/C is great until the bus fills past capacity at Nicoya! 🙂

Keep up the great work, Centrocoasting.
