safari opens blank page ipad

This article explains how you can fix when Safari returns a blank page when you try to load a webpage on your iPhone or iPad, as you can see in the screenshot below:

Safari blank page

Are you having this problem too? Does Safari open with a blank page instead of the web site? If you are unable to load a site and if Safari shows a blank page (shows nothing), then this article is for you.

We previously wrote an article about a similar problem. That article explains how you can fix the “ Cannot Open Page ” error. If Safari is displaying the “ kCFErrorDomainCFNetwork “, see this article.

Please try the tips below until Safari starts working again:

If you are getting the “ This Connection Is Not Private ” message, see this article.

Restart Safari

To do that you need to quit Safari and then reopen it. Here is how you can do this:

  • On your device, go to your Home screen and swipe up from the bottom of the screen. If this is an iPhone 8 or earlier, double press the Home button.
  • This will reveal the app switcher which lists your most recently used apps.
  • Swipe left or right and find the Safari preview.
  • Swipe up on the Safari icon.
  • Then reopen Safari normally to see if your issue is resolved.

Restart Safari

Restart your device

Restarting your iPhone or iPad may resolve your problem. Here is how you can do that:

  • If this is an iPhone X, 11 or later and an iPad with Face ID: Press and hold the side (or top) and the volume up (or down) buttons together until you see the red power off slider. Then drag the slider. Wait about 1 minute so that your device completely powers off.  Then press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
  • Other iPhone models and iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the side or top button until you see the power off slider. Then slide the slider. To turn your device back on, press and hold the side or top button until you see the Apple logo.

Clear Safari data

Here is how you can do this:

  • On your device, tap Settings > Safari.
  • And scroll down and find the “Clear History and Web site Data” button, tap this.
  • Tap the red Clear History and Data button to confirm.

When you do this, your history, cookies and other data will be removed. These will also be removed from other devices signed into your iCloud account .

Clear Safari data

Check for an iOS update

It is possible that a software update may fix your problem. Here is how you can check for an update.

  • On your device, go to Settings > General > Software Update. if there is an update available, update your iPhone or iPad .

Internet connection issues?

It is possible that the Internet is not working. Lets first try to test that if you have a strong connection. Open the App Store app on your device, does the App Store app load without an issue? Then probably you have a connection. If not, you may try:

  • Turn on Airplane Mode and wait about 30 seconds and then turn it off (Settings > Airplane Mode).
  • Restart your device.
  • Restart your modem and router by unplugging the power cord and wait about 1 minute and then plug them back in.

Try a different connection. If you are using a cellular connection, connect to a Wi-Fi network to see if your problem still occurs. If you are using a Wi-Fi connection, then try to connect to a Wi-Fi network.

Turn off Safari experimental features

On your device, go to Settings > Safari > scroll down and > Advanced > Experimental Features. And toggle off everything here. If this does not resolve your problem, you can turn them on again.

You should also try disabling various Safari experimental features one-by-one. For that, go to Settings > Safari > Advanced > Experimental features.

12. Change Wi-Fi DNS

Sometimes, the issue happens to a wrongly configured DNS server. You should change it to Google DNS and see if websites open in the Safari browser.

Fixing Safari issues on iPad can take seconds to fix due to an unknown minor issue, or it can take a lot longer. Here's how to fix it when Safari won't work on an iPad.

Causes of Safari Not Working On iPad

There are many reasons why Safari may not be working on iPad. Try these troubleshooting tips to figure out what's happened.

  • Your iPad is out of date. If your iPad is not up to date, you may find yourself running into trouble loading standard apps including Safari.
  • You're offline. If your iPad doesn't have a data connection, Safari won't be able to load any websites, making it look as if Safari is the issue.
  • Your iPad has a major problem. If your iPad won't load any apps including Safari, the problem may be deeper than just the one app.

How to Fix Safari Not Working On iPad

If your iPad won't open Safari or it won't load correctly, it severely limits your ability to browse the internet. Here's how to fix Safari not working on iPad.

Restart your iPad . Many common issues are solved by restarting or rebooting the device in question. Restart your iPad to hopefully fix Safari.

Check your data connection . If your iPad is a Wi-Fi model, check you're connected to a Wi-Fi network with internet access. If your iPad has a cellular connection, check it has a signal and is working correctly. Tap Settings > Cellular and check the toggle next to Safari is On.

Check Airplane mode . Check if Airplane mode is enabled on your iPad. If it is, you won't be able to browse online.

Check content restrictions . If you have parental controls set up on your iPad, these may stop you from browsing using Safari. Check the settings to confirm this isn't the issue.

Clear your browsing history . If Safari opens but is unresponsive, clear your browsing history to see if that makes it work more effectively.

Disable Safari suggestions. Safari suggestions can sometimes cause Safari to crash. Try disabling them by tapping Settings > Safari > then toggle off the Safari Suggestions switch.

Update your iPad . If you haven't updated your iPad in a while, you may need the latest version of iPadOS to correct any issues. It's simple to do but set aside a while for the update process to complete.

Reset your iPad . Resetting your iPad to factory settings removes all your personal information but can sometimes solve an underlying issue previous steps haven't solved.

Contact Apple . If none of the above fixes work, you may have a hardware issue with your iPad. If you have remaining warranty or AppleCare+ , the appointment and fix may be free.

The first thing you should check is that you're entering the correct URL. If you're typing it manually, try finding a link. If you're following a link, try typing it by hand. The website may also be down, and you should try again later.

The best way is to delete your Safari data. Go to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data .

How to customize the safari start page on iphone and ipad.

Make your Start Page clean and simple---or just as cluttered as you like it.

On your iPhone or iPad, you can easily customize the Safari Start Page in iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 (or higher). You can make the page blank (mostly), add a background image, or pick and choose what you want to see. Here's how.

First, open Safari on your iPhone or iPad and open a new tab by tapping the tabs button (two overlapping rectangles), then tapping the plus ("+") button.

You'll see Safari's "Start Page" by default. To edit what's on the Start Page, scroll down if necessary and tap the "Edit" button.

When you tap "Edit," a "Customize Start Page" window will appear. Use the switches beside the listed options to turn them on or off. Here's what each option does.

  • Favorites: This displays items from your Favorites list (like bookmarks).
  • Frequently Visited: You'll see a list of frequently visited websites.
  • Shared With You: This gives you a list of items shared with you from other people through the Messages app.
  • Privacy Report: This shows a report on the number of trackers Safari has blocked recently.
  • Siri Suggestions: This displays suggestions from Siri related to what's in your history and bookmarks.
  • Reading List: This shows items from your Reading List .
  • iCloud Tabs: This shows Safari tabs that are synchronized across iCloud from your other devices.

While also in the "Customize Start Page" window, you can use the "three lines" handle beside each item to tap and drag the Start Page items in the list. This will change the order of how the items will appear on the Start Page.

And if you turn the switch beside "Background Image" into the "on" position, you can select a background picture that will display behind the content on your Start Page. Tap an image in the thumbnails or tap the plus ("+") button to select a custom image from your photo library.

If you want to make your Start Page as minimalist as possible, switch off every item on the "Customize Start Page" list. (Unfortunately, you'll still see the "Edit" button.)

When you're done, click the "X" button to close the Customize Start Page window. The changes you've made take effect immediately. Happy browsing!

Open iOS Safari to a blank page

One of my biggest beefs with Safari on iOS is that when I tap the Safari icon on my Home screen, instead of being able to use Safari immediately, I often must wait for the browser to reload the last page I was viewing—usually hours, or even days, earlier. (This is less of an issue on the iPhone 4 and the iPad 2, as the additional memory in these models means Safari doesn’t flush its page cache as often, but it still happens frequently.) Similarly, if I previously closed all Safari windows, the next time I open Safari, it pops up my bookmarks list instead of letting me immediately enter a URL.

A feature I’d love to see in iOS Safari is for the browser to open to a blank page whenever I tap the Safari icon directly. But until Apple adds such a feature, it doesn’t have to remain just another item on a wishlist —you can get essentially the same behavior, right now, using iOS’s Home-screen-bookmark feature. Here’s how:

safari opens blank page ipad

Launch Safari on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

In the URL field, type about:blank and then tap Go to “open” that page…which will be completely blank.

Tap the Share button (the one at the bottom of the screen that looks like a rectangle with an arrow).

Tap Add To Home Screen to create a Home-screen bookmark for this blank page.

In the dialog that appears, give the icon a descriptive name. (I chose New Page for mine.)

The Home-screen bookmark is saved to your device’s Home screen, where you can move it wherever you like. On my iPad and iPhone, I’ve moved this bookmark to my first Home screen, relegating the actual Safari icon to a folder of rarely used stock apps, where it hangs out with Compass, Notes, and Stocks.

safari opens blank page ipad

Whenever you want to open Safari to view a new page, you simply tap this New Page icon on your Home screen. Safari opens—instantly—to a blank page, ready for you to type a URL or open a bookmark.

Another benefit of this tip is that if you were planning to keep currently open pages handy (meaning you were really going to open a new Safari page), you avoid not only having to wait for a page to reload, but also the extra steps of tapping Safari’s multiple-pages button and then the New Page button. And it avoids the aforementioned annoyance of your Bookmarks list popping up on its own whenever you launch Safari after previously closing all Safari windows.

What if you want to open Safari to view a previously opened page? You can tap the Safari icon, as usual. Or if, like me, you’ve buried the browser’s icon in a folder, you can simply access Safari from iOS’s multi-tasking dock (by double-pressing the Home button). For me, this approach closely mirrors my actual Safari use anyway: Nine times out of ten, if I want to look at a page already open in Safari, I open Safari from the multi-tasking dock. I can continue to do that, but if I want to go directly to a new page, I use my New Page icon on the Home Screen.

The biggest drawback to this tip for some people is that the icon for this blank-page bookmark is, appropriately enough, blank. Unfortunately, there’s no way to give it a better-looking icon, since URL-bookmark icons are adapted from each Website’s favicon . An alternate approach would be to publish, somewhere on the Web, a blank Web page with a nice favicon—say, a Safari icon with a blank-page badge?—and then create a Home-screen bookmark to that page. Of course, loading that page wouldn’t be as fast as opening about:blank , but it would likely still be much faster than the current Safari behavior of reloading an older “real” Web page.

How To Fix: Safari Can’t Open Page On iPhone/iPad

Safari Cant Open Page On iPhone iPad

When I try to open a web page in Safari on my iPhone or iPad, I sometimes get the error “Problems repeatedly,” and the page does not open properly.

This error can occur only when trying to open a particular page in Safari, but it can also occur randomly on various pages.

This article will explain what to  do when the page does not open due to the “Repeated problem” error in Safari on iPhone / iPad.

Method 1: Restart Safari

It is possible that a temporary problem has occurred in Safari, and the page cannot be opened due to frequent “Problem repeated” errors.

Therefore, quitting Safari entirely and then restarting it may resolve the error.

To quit Safari and then restart it, follow the steps below.

  • Swipe up from the bottom edge of the iPhone (iPad) screen and release your finger in the center of the screen to display the multitasking screen. Press the home button twice quickly for models with a home button instead.
  • When the list of waiting apps is displayed, swipe horizontally to find “ Safari ” and swipe up on the panel to exit.
  • Tap Safari from the home screen to start it.

With the above procedure, you can restart Safari. After restarting Safari, check if the page can be opened normally.

Method 2: Delete temporary data in Safari

There may be a case where the page cannot be opened due to a “ problem repeated ” error due to a problem with Safari’s cache data or cookies.

Therefore, deleting the temporary data in Safari may solve the problem.

However, keep in mind that deleting cookies will log you out of the site you are logged in to, and you will have to re-enter your account information.

To delete temporary Safari data, follow the steps below.

  • Open “ Settings ” from the home screen.
  • Tap “ Safari “.
  • Tap “ Details “.
  • Tap “ Website data “.
  • Tap “ Delete all website data ” at the bottom of the screen.
  • When the confirmation message is displayed, tap “ Delete Now ” to execute the deletion.

Clear website data

With the above procedure, you can delete the temporary data of Safari. Start after the deletion is complete and check if the web page is displayed.

Method 3: Reboot the device

If restarting Safari doesn’t fix the “ repeated problems ” error, try restarting your iPhone or iPad.

You can reset the temporary system trouble by restarting the device.

Follow the steps below to restart your iPhone or iPad.

  • iPhone X and above : Press and hold the Side Button and Volume Control Button simultaneously and drag the power off slider. When the power is turned off, press and hold the “ Side button ” to start it.
  • iPhone 8 and earlier : Press and hold the “ Side Button ” and drag the power off slider. When the power is turned off, press and hold the “ Side button ” to start it.
  • iPad (without home button) : Press and hold the “ side button ” and “ volume control button ” at the same time and drag the power off slider. When the power is turned off, press and hold the “side button” to start it.
  • iPad (with home button) : Press and hold the “ top button ” and drag the power off slider. When the power is turned off, press and hold the “top button” to start it.

Reboot the device

After restarting the device, open Safari and check if the page is displayed normally.

Action 4: Perform a software update

It is possible that the page cannot be opened with a “repeated problem” error due to an old version of Safari or the defective system.

Therefore, running a software update to update Safari and your system to the latest version may resolve the issue.

To execute the software update, follow the procedure below.

  • Open the “ Settings ” app.
  • Tap General  >> Software Update  to proceed.
  • When you see the available updates, tap Download and Install. If the message “Your software is up to date” is displayed, you have already updated to the latest version.
  • After performing the update, follow the on-screen instructions to download and install.

Once you’ve run the software update to bring Safari and your system up to date, make sure Safari opens the page normally.

Method 5: Switch to desktop mode

You may get a “repeated problem” error in Safari because you are trying to open a page that is not designed for mobile.

If you get a “repeated problem” error on a particular page and can’t open it, you may be able to see it usually by switching the website view to desktop mode.

To switch to desktop mode and view the page in Safari, follow the steps below.

  • Start Safari and access the page that cannot be opened due to an error.
  • When you see the “Problems repeatedly” error, tap the icon labeled “aA” on the left side of the address bar.
  • When the menu is displayed, tap “ Website settings “.
  • Toggle the Show Desktop Website switch to On.
  • Tap “Finish” to close the settings screen and press the “Refresh” button to reload the page.

Or, if you cannot switch to desktop mode by the above procedure, try setting from the settings app as follows.

  • Tap Show Desktop Website.
  • Switch “ All Websites ” to “ On “.
  • Start Safari and revisit the page you couldn’t open.

You can switch Safari to desktop mode with the above steps and open the page. After reloading the page in desktop mode, ensure the content is displayed normally.

Method 6: Turn off the search suggestion function

Safari has a search suggestion function that displays search word suggestions under the search box when you enter a search word halfway.

Due to a bug in this search candidate feature, there are cases where the page does not open with a “repeated problem” error.

Therefore, please turn off the search suggestion function and check if the web page is displayed normally. To turn off the search suggestions feature, follow the steps below.

  • Toggle all “ Search engine suggestions “, “ Safari search suggestions “, and “ Preload top hits ” switches to “ Off “.

If you can change the settings, reload the page in Safari and see if the error no longer occurs. If the error persists, restore the settings and proceed to the next action.

Method 7: Stop iCloud sync

Safari may have a “ repeated problem ” error that prevents the page from opening due to a problem with the iCloud sync process.

Therefore, please stop syncing Safari in iCloud and see if the problem goes away.

To stop syncing Safari in iCloud, follow the steps below.

  • Tap “ My Apple ID account name ” at the top of the screen.
  • Tap iCloud.
  • Set the “ Safari ” switch to “ Off “.

With the above procedure, you can stop syncing Safari in iCloud. If you can stop the sync, check if the page is displayed normally in Safari.

Once the page is displayed successfully, follow the steps to turn iCloud Safari sync back on.

Method 8: Disable JavaScript

A problem with the JavaScript embedded in a web page may cause a “repeated problem” error in Safari.

The above problem may be avoided by disabling the JavaScript function of Safari.

To disable the JavaScript function of Safari, follow the procedure below.

  • Set the “ JavaScript ” switch to “ Off “.

With the above procedure, you can disable the JavaScript function of Safari. If you can disable it, reload the page and see if the error was avoided.

However, if you disable the JavaScript function, other web pages may not be displayed properly, so please re-enable the function when you can check the page contents.

Method 9: Change the browser

It is possible that the page does not open with a “repeated problem” error due to a bug in the version of Safari you are using.

Safari may be defective, especially if similar errors occur randomly on multiple pages.

If you still get the error even though Safari is the latest version, consider temporarily using another browser such as Chrome –AppStore .

Then, when a new software update is available, run the update to see if the Safari bug has been fixed.

Method 10: Contact the site operator

If you’ve tried these steps and the page still doesn’t open in Safari, there may be a problem with the website itself.

In particular, if you are getting the “Repeated problem” error only on a specific page, there may be a problem on the website side.

If you suspect a website problem, it is difficult for the user to deal with it, so please wait for the management to respond or contact the management for the error page.

Curious if anyone has an issue with Safari randomly show a white screen and show no content on the page. Been going on since I updated to iOS 13. On the latest software now, still the same issue. Only way to fix is to close and reopen Safari. (iPhone XS Max)

I have this issue as well; I have to kill Safari and then it works fine for a while. I do this 3-4 times a day. The two apps I use most are Safari and Mail, both of which have been a complete disaster since the ill-fated day I decided to download ios 13. Apple don’t seem that bothered.

Yep, you're not alone. This is my experience, as well.

The fact that this is still a bug in iOS 13.3.1 is really frustrating.

I see this every now and then. On my Mac I even get pages that appear but are completely scrambled. The only fix is to close the tab and open a new one. This happens on a daily basis. With iPadOS 13.4 beta 3, I have also seen pages that consistently show up completely blank. I've reported all of it via Feedback but haven't gotten any replies.

Apple is just hopeless at producing quality software. As a developer, I dread every time I get a report of something not working properly on version 'x' of iOS, I know I'm in for a long painful session with the xcode simulator trying to reproduce and fix it. Every new version introduces its own new slew of bugs and incompatibilities with previous versions. I'm no Google fan, but Chrome/Android is light years ahead of Safari/iOS in my mind when it comes to stability and quality - even with the apparent disadvantage Google has of running on hundreds of different devices from different manufacturers as opposed to Apple having to support just a few of its own devices.

Helmsley

I get this occasionally too on iOS 13.6. Assumed it was the poor at times mobile network in my area but obviously not.

How to Change Your Start Page on Safari

Your Safari start page, or "homepage", is the page that loads whenever you start Safari. You can change this page to whatever you'd like, but if you have an adware infection it may keep getting reset. If this is the case, you can try manually removing the adware so that you can regain your control. If you use an iOS device, you can create custom shortcuts to simulate a traditional start page.

Changing Your Homepage

Step 1 Open the Safari browser.

  • If you're using Safari for Windows, click the "Edit" menu and select "Preferences". It is highly recommended that you switch to a more up-to-date browser, as Safari for Windows is no longer supported by Apple and is not receiving any security updates.

Step 3 Select the General tab if it isn't already.

  • You can also click Set to Current Page to set your new homepage to the page that is currently open.
  • If your homepage keeps resetting to something else, red on to the next section.

Removing an Adware Infection

Step 1 Understand when you need to do this.

Step 6 Reboot your computer.

Hi book246,

Thanks for contacting Apple Support Communities!

We understand that you're unable to use Safari as it quits unexpectedly.

Restarting your iPhone is a great place to start! You can also clear website data, check any VPN settings if you have a VPN, and enable JavaScript as outlined here for additional troubleshooting: If Safari isn't loading websites or quits on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

"Clear website data

You can clear website data occasionally to improve Safari performance.

  • Go to Settings > Safari.
  • Tap Clear History and Website Data.
  • Tap Clear History and Data to confirm.

Turn on JavaScript

Turn on JavaScript if it's not already on.

  • Go to Settings > Safari > Advanced.
  • Find the JavaScript feature.
  • Tap the button to turn on JavaScript."

We hope this helps you.
