Things to do in Paia, HI: Maui’s Chilled Out Hippie Town on the North Shore

last Updated: December 1, 2023 hawaii maui

FYI: Affiliate links may be sprinkled throughout the awesome, free content you see below. I’ll receive a small commission when you purchase from my links (at no extra cost to you), which I’ll totally blow on adult things like boba tea and avocado toast. As always, thanks for the support.

Headed to Maui and looking for the best things to do in Paia?! I’m sharing all about this funky little chilled out beach town on the North Shore of Maui, which we absolutely love!

This massive guide will showcase not only my favorite things to do in Paia, but where to eat, where to stay, and all the best beaches to visit in this hippy surfer town. It’s the perfect escape from the bustling resort area of Kaanapali — super laid back and one of the most eccentric places in Maui.

paia food tour

We visited Paia on our most recent trip to Maui, and fell in love with the entire town. Coming from San Francisco, I loved the hippy, bohemian vibes, and just how vibrant and carefree all the locals seem to be. It’s honestly kinda reminiscent of a funky and laidback California beach town from the 60s, which I discovered is totally my scene.

The town is full of old-school hippies, professional surfers, and tourists looking for the best things to do in Paia. And of course everyone’s looking to soak up the artsy vibes of the little beach shops (lots of surf and swimwear here!) and fine art galleries. Let’s not forget the hemp store, Buddhist stupa, and the best natural food store on the entire island. Take a break from the beach and head to Paia for a day for some shopping, art, and relaxation!

And just to set the record straight, make sure you pronounce Paia “pah-ee-ah” — you don’t wanna give away your tourist status right away!

Planning on doing some island hopping? Check out these additional resources:

Things to Know Before Visiting Paia

My favorite things to do in Paia, Maui, Hawaii! Spend a day on the North Shore!

Where is Paia exactly?!

Paia is located on Maui’s North Shore, not terribly far from where most visitors book hotels. It’s about a 45 minute drive from the buzzy beach areas of Lahaina and Kaanapali in West Maui, and only about 20 minutes from Kihei in South Maui.

The town is concentrated on the cross section of Hana Highway and Baldwin Avenue, and it’s really hard to miss. Just put Paia Fish Market into your GPS and it’ll take you right to town!

You might have heard of Paia when researching stops on the Road to Hana . This is because it’s essentially the last little town before making the long and windy drive to Hana! Psst – you’ll wanna fill up on gas here.

Many tourists breeze right through Paia with hopes to reach Hana faster, but don’t be like them! Definitely make a stop (just not on the same day you’re driving the road to Hana — Paia deserves a full day of its own!).

How long to Stay in Paia:

I’d say a day trip to Paia will suffice, but you definitely won’t get to everything on this list! It’s a tiny town, but there’s a whole bunch of things to do and restaurants to check out.

There’s definitely enough beaches and other things to do in Paia for two days or so, so if you wanna explore in-depth (and eat all the things), plan to spend the night!

Us? We typically visit on day trips when we’re staying in Lahaina/Kaanapali, but next time we’re on Maui, I kinda wanna spend the night!

Weather in Paia

Just like elsewhere in Hawaii, there’s a rainy season and a wet season. The rainy season typically lasts between November-March, with the dry season being April-October. Thankfully, in regards to temperature, highs are consistent in the 80s and lows consistent in the 60s/70s year-round.

Honestly, there’s really no bad time to visit this artsy town. Just avoid visiting in mid-summer if you’re not a huge fan of the heat, as some will say the weather can become uncomfortably warm.

Where to Stay in Paia

Paia is home to some of the most unique lodging options in all of Maui! I mean, there’s even a treehouse surrounded by mango trees (and yes, of course it’s on my Hawaii bucket list )!

Would I spend my whole trip in Paia? Probably not — Maui is filled with tons of things to do around the island (find my detailed Maui itinerary here ). BUT, I would spend a night or two here in addition to a few nights in Kihei or Lahaina/Kaanapali.

Psst — if you’re hoping to get a head start on the Road to Hana , I highly recommend spending the night before in Paia. You’ll be about 45 minutes ahead of everyone starting in Kaanapali/Lahaina! And those 45 minutes sometimes mean beating all of the traffic!

My Paia recommendations:

Paia Inn : Check out Paia Inn, a boutique hotel just steps from Paia Bay and located across the street from Paia Fish Market (yum!). This Bali-inspired hotel offers private patios, concierge services, and on-site dining. Be sure to lounge on their private beach and relax in their tropical outdoor spaces (and yes, complimentary Wifi is offered of course).

Mangolani Inn : If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, check out Mangolani Inn, a boutique bed and breakfast — in an actual treehouse! Yes, a treehouse!! Just steps away from the main town, Mangolani Inn’s tranquil scenery consists of mango trees, avocado trees, and passionfruit (can we get any more tropical than this!?).

If this isn’t relaxing enough, don’t forget to lounge in the hammocks and take a dip in the hot tub. Of course, we can’t look past Mangolani Inn’s effort to promote green energy by using solar panels!

Aloha Surf Hostel : Looking for a budget-friendly option? Aloha Surf Hostel, located between two of the most famous surf spots on Maui, offers both dorm-style and private lodging options. This tropical-themed oasis offers free breakfast, tours, and Wifi. And it’s where you’ll find that super Instagrammable surfboard fence!

Take a break from walking the town to play pool, ping pong, or relax in their hot tub. Traveling solo ? You’ll be sure to meet fellow travelers here!

The Best Things To Do in Paia, Maui

Shop in Paia Town: If you’re looking for beachwear or island-themed gifts, the town of Paia offers some of the most unique and eclectic shops to wander around in. Bring your wallet though because these small shops can get quite pricey. A few to check out:

paia food tour

  • Don’t miss Alice in Hulaland (one of my favorite shops in Paia), where you can find a reasonably priced beach bag and lots of Hawaiian themed clothing (good quality trendy stuff, not your typical Hawaiian luau shirts). :p
  • If you’re looking for some uniquely designed jewelry, be sure to stop into Heart in Paia, where you can buy pieces directly from the artist. Shop small and support!
  • And I always love stopping in Pakaloha — their bikinis come in a rainbow of colors (and you can never have enough bikinis!). They are kinda pricey but I’ve been happily wearing mine for years without much wear and tear.

Colorful Surfboard Photo Opp: Make a quick stop at the Aloha Surf Hostel to take a picture with the array of colorful surfboards (can’t miss this perfect Instagram opportunity!). You’ll find the hostel right on Baldwin Avenue, a little up the road (221 Baldwin Ave). It’ll take all of 5 minutes, but worth it in my opinion!

My favorite things to do in Paia, Maui, Hawaii! Spend a day on the North Shore!

Hang at the Beach : Need to cool off? I hear ya – all that walking around in the hot Hawaiin air is difficult ?. Take a break and head to the beach, watch the surfers, and take a dip.

There’s quite a few beaches in Paia, but I highly recommend Baby Beach for a chilled-out lagoon and Ho’okipa Beach if you wanna see some turtles! See below for information about specific beaches in Paia!

Take a Yoga Class: Yogis, you’re gonna LOVE Paia! And all you beginners as well (promise)! Paia is the perfect spot to reconnect your body and mind — there’s a whole slew of yoga studios to check out in this peaceful beach town.

paia food tour

A few recommendations:

  • Relax and clear your mind and body at Maha Yoga & Wellness Center by taking one of their many, reasonably-priced (!!!) yoga classes. Unwind even more by enjoying a massage or foot bath treatment — there’s lots of services to choose from!
  • In the mood for a more intense workout? Check out Infusion Barre & Hot Yoga where classes are offered for all levels and instructors are known for their positivity and friendliness.
  • Looking for a beginner yoga class or simply want to expand your yoga skills? Check out Iyengar Yoga , also located in the main town, where a variety of yoga classes (beginner to advanced) are offered.

Due to the close proximity of these 3 yoga studios, all are comparable in price, and reasonably-priced for yoga in paradise 🙂

Ho’okipa Lookout: Take a short drive to Ho’okipa Lookout, famous for watching windsurfers, surfers, and spotting an abundance of sea turtles lounging in the sand. Be cautious as the cliffs can be dangerous and the rocks can be slick. If you’re lucky, you may be able to catch the food trucks and local artists sellings goods near the parking lot.

Speaking of parking, it can be tough, so arrive early in the day and maybe even catch the sunrise! Check out details about Ho-okipa Beach Park below.

Head to Twin Falls: Continue your journey on this rustic side of the island by heading to Twin Falls, just a 20 minute drive from the town of Paia. This is the perfect stop if you’re wanting to avoid the treacherous road to Hana.

Twin Falls is known to be the first stop on the Road to Hana, so obviously can get crowded. Plan to get there early in the day. Park on the street and follow the jungly trail to the waterfalls.

My favorite things to do in Paia, Maui, Hawaii! Spend a day on the North Shore!

This short trail (it’s less than a mile!), will lead you to a beautiful freshwater pool where you may see locals jumping off of cliffs or tourists simply cooling off in this refreshing natural pool. Be sure to bring a waterproof camera and get those insta-worthy pics!!

This spot is a DREAM for the ultimate jungly Hawaiian photos. Take the trail back to the parking lot — you’ll find a Hawaiian Farm Stand full of fresh juices, smoothies, and popsicles. Indulge!

FYI — It’s best to wear hiking/water shoes or shoes with grips on the bottom as this trail can be muddy, wet, and slippery at times.

Huelo Lookout: If you wish, continue on the Road to Hana to Huelo Lookout (it’s about 25 minutes east of Paia). There’s views of the ocean in the distance and of course, those not-to-miss jungly lookouts. Stop at the Huelo Lookout Shack for some fresh banana bread, smoothie, or sugar cane juice (my favorite!).

paia food tour

Makawao Spa Treatments: Experience the tranquil upcountry town of Makawao by getting a massage, facial, or an ultimate, luxurious spa treatment from Ho’omana Spa. Ancient Hawaiian techniques and natural remedies are incorporated to give you the ultimate relaxation experience. The coconut milk and honey bath is calling my name!

Maui Pineapple Tours: Take a 10 minute drive from Paia up to Makawao to experience Maui Pineapple Tours to learn about the history and culture of harvesting this yummy fruit! Tour the actual pineapple fields and learn all about the growing cycle of a pineapple.

paia food tour

This 1.5 hour tour can be a bit pricey, but included in the price is an airport safe pre-packaged pineapple to take home and enjoy on the mainland! The ultimate Hawaiian souvenir!

Take a Helicopter Tour: Looking for more adventurous things to do in Paia and want to get a bird’s eye view of the island ? Take a helicopter tour from OGG and experience the Hana Rainforest, where you’ll land and explore a former taro plantation in the Wailua Valley.

My favorite things to do in Paia, Maui, Hawaii! Spend a day on the North Shore!

Continue your journey by exploring the lush jungle! Experience aerial views of Maui’s north coast, specifically Paia, Haiku, and the Road to Hana. This is the perfect alternative to experiencing Hana if you’re not wanting to take on the well-known treacherous drive. It’s honestly not that scary though — just use common sense and go slow!

My favorite things to do in Paia, Maui, Hawaii! Spend a day on the North Shore!

After landing in Kahului, make an extra stop at Geste Shrimp Truck for lunch. Be sure to try their flavorful garlic shrimp!! One of the best on the island. Need a pick-me-up? Be sure to grab a cup of authentic Hawaiian coffee from Akamai Coffee.

Read Next: My Helicopter Experience in Maui (psst — we loved it!)

Attend the Obon Ceremony and Festival at Mantokuji Mission of Paia: If you’re lucky enough to be in Paia during the Obon Ceremony and Festival, head to the Mantokuji Mission of Paia. The Obon Ceremony and Festival is a Japanese ceremony to celebrate the lives of ancestors by participating in traditional dances and eating lots of food (count me in!).

Famous for serving local favorites like andagi (deep-fried donuts), shave ice, and chow fun, this vibrant and lively ceremony takes place in the summer. Be sure to check the exact dates at Mantokuji Mission for this festival’s arrival. It’s by far one of the most cultural things to do in Paia!

Beaches in Paia

My favorite things to do in Paia, Maui, Hawaii! Spend a day on the North Shore!

Baldwin Beach Park: Be sure to check out Baldwin Beach Park, the North Shore’s most popular beach. This long, white sandy beach offers bathrooms, showers, picnic tables, BBQs, and lifeguards (for good reason)!! The surf can be rough at times, making this a popular destination for experienced body boarders and windsurfers.

Baby Beach: Looking to cool off after strolling the shops or taking a hot yoga class? Head over to Baby Beach – the perfect spot to relax as this lagoon offers protection from the big waves.

Swim some laps, float on your back, or take a stroll on the large sand dunes and wooded area that backs the beach. It’s kid-friendly but can get windy in the afternoons, so be sure to hit this beach earlier in the day.  I LOVED seeing the turtles swim around in the water.

where to go snorkeling in maui

Ho’okipa Beach Park: Not in the mood to go snorkeling in Maui , but want to see more Hawaiian green sea turtles and professional windsurfers? Head over to Ho’okipa Beach Park! This beach is home to a world renowned windsurfing destination due to its impressive surf. But my favorite part — the sea turtles! There’s lot of them relaxing on the shore and the exposed reef that runs along the water. Don’t get too close; they’re federally protected!

Like Baldwin Beach, it’s best to be careful of the surf and rip currents over here. Two lifeguard stands are located at each end of the beach — be sure to ask them about the swimming conditions for the day.

Want to get a better view? Head up to Ho’okipa Lookout, located on a cliff along the beach. It may be best to drive to this spot, as the lookout offers its own parking lot. More information on the lookout can be found under “Things to do in Paia”.

Tavares Beach: Next up, Tavares Beach, a sandy spot near Paia known for its snorkeling, swimming, rock jumping, surfing, and windsurfing. You may even spot some sea turtles along the reef! The beach is a favorite among locals, so try to hit this beach during the week to avoid crowds.

Tavares is easy to miss, especially if you’re not familiar with the area. It’s often referred to as “Blue Tile House Beach”, as there is a beach house with a ceramic blue tile roof used as a landmark (so look out for that!).

Paia Secret Beach: Between Paia Bay and Baldwin Beach, you’ll find Paia Secret Beach. Known as a clothing optional or nude beach, this beach is relatively private and often visited by locals.

To access this beach, park at Paia Bay and walk through the wooded area along the west end of the bay. Clothing is expected on the Paia side of the beach, unlike the Kahului side, where some swim nude. There is no vehicle access for visitors and there are better beaches for swimming adjacent to this one, but head here if you’re looking to avoid crowds or simply want to swim nude!

Kaulahao Beach: Need to see more sea turtles? Head over to Kaulahao Beach, located just about a half a mile away from Paia town. This isn’t the best beach for swimming due to the rocks, but sea turtles on the sand!!!! There is a small parking lot, where visitors come and go, likely making a stop before beginning the Road to Hana .

Where to Eat in Paia

Mama’s Fish House: My all time favorite place to eat in not just Paia, but in all of Maui(!!!). Whatever you do, don’t miss this spot! There’s Polynesian decor, a seafood-driven Hawaiian menu, and even epic ocean views.

My favorite things to do in Paia, Maui, Hawaii! Spend a day on the North Shore!

The menu changes daily depending on what the local fishermen catch — it doesn’t get more fresh than that! And while everything on the menu is great, obviously get fish and dessert (I’d die for some lobster-stuffed mahi mahi and liliko’i creme brulee right about now)!

Psst → You’ll definitely need to make a reservation (way) in advance, as Mama’s is popular for a reason. Check sunset time and make your reservation for a bit after. Come extra early to wander the lush grounds, watch the sunset, and grab a tiki drink at the bar!

Paia Fish Market: Time to fuel up after shopping and beach time? Be sure to check out the well-known Paia Fish Market. This casual dine-in restaurant has fresh seafood plates, tacos, and pasta. If you’re not a fan of seafood, they offer burgers, salads, and plenty of appetizers. Definitely order the shrimp and fish tacos — some of the best I’ve ever had!

paia food tour

Cafe des Amis: Not in the mood for seafood? How dare you (haha). Cafe des Amis serves up both Mediterranian and Indian dishes for breakfast and all throughout the day. I cannot stop thinking about their crepes!

Not hungry? Grab a cocktail, glass of wine, or a refreshing fruit smoothie! Be sure to check out their happy hour from 4-6! We always look for happy hours on the island to stay within budget, while still getting to try all of the yummy, island food!

Ice cream lover? Head over to Cafe des Amis’s Artisan Ice Cream shop, located right next door. With raving reviews and local flavors like toasted coconut (vegan) and lilikoi butter, you’ll definitely want to try this homemade ice cream!

Paia Bowls: If you haven’t had an acai bowl in Hawaii yet, do yourself a favor and make that a TOP priority. And lemme tell you — the acai from Paia Bowls is top-notch (they also have smoothies, but who are we kidding, just get a bowl. Add some of their tropical toppings like coconut, ashwagandha, papaya (my favorite!), and even peanut butter!

My favorite things to do in Paia, Maui, Hawaii! Spend a day on the North Shore!

The outdoor patio is just as lush as you’d imagine. Need a pick-me-up? You’re in luck — there’s bulletproof coffee and a golden turmeric latte here, too!

Milagros Food Company: Need a heartier meal or simply a cold cocktail? Head over to Milagros Food Company for fresh Mexican food, mai tais, and margaritas! Try something Hawaiian like a Li Hing Mui marg and a mahi-mahi burrito.

Psst → Happy Happy is EVERYDAY from 3-6, and the drink and appetizer specials are a really great price!

Mana Foods: Yup, Mana Foods is actually a grocery store — BUT, here me out! Imagine aisles of fresh tropical fruits, organic local produce, delicious bakery goods, and even a smoothie bar. It definitely ain’t your regular market!

Pick up some deli meat, tropical fruit, a salad from the salad bar, or a dish from their hot food bar and head to one of the beaches mentioned above for a picnic and some more sunshine!

My favorite things to do in Paia, Maui, Hawaii! Spend a day on the North Shore!

Tobi’s Shave Ice: Shave ice a MUST in Maui, and Tobi’s doesn’t disappoint. The syrups are locally sourced and there’s lots of outdoor seating. And always add the coconut ice cream for that perfectly creamy flavor.

If you need more than a snack, their fresh tuna poke is the way to go.

My favorite things to do in Paia, Maui, Hawaii! Spend a day on the North Shore!

Vana Paia: We like to come to Vana Paia (part of Paia Inn) for breakfast. Yes, it’s a bit on the pricier side, but I promise you won’t be disappointed. The food is high-quality and fresh, there’s fresh-pressed juice (my fave), and you can eat under the tropical trees on the outdoor patio. Loaded bloody mary’s anyone?! You betcha they fill up that glass with all of the fixings!

Coming later in the day? Vana offers pastas, sandwiches, and fresh fish dishes like scallops and prawns. They’ve even got their own sushi bar — make sure to try a few sushi rolls and some fresh sashimi.

Paia Bay Coffee and Bar: Paia Bay offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, or come here simply for some coffee! You might even catch some chill live music!

There are so many options — think breakfast plates, nutella croissants (<3), fresh salads, sandwiches, and a mahi mahi curry bowl (yum!). Again, look for their happy hour, which runs from 3-6 and offers food and drinks!

This outdoor restaurant is tucked behind the storefronts, so be sure to keep an eye out! I recommend stopping here to fuel up before heading on the Road to Hana.

Flatbread Company: Ohhhh, one of my favorite dishes — wood-fired pizza! And they’re over here at Flatbread Company. With fresh ingredients for salads and pizzas, no one should be disappointed (and tehre’s even a bunch of vegan options!). We like to share a pizza and a salad here and it’s enough for the two of us!

I hope you’ve enjoyed all my favorite things to do in Paia! Are you planning a trip to the North Shore of Maui anytime soon?!

I am bookmarking this.  I am headed to Maui next year for my best friends wedding!  Definitely gonna try to hit up some of these spots!

You’re gonna love it! I am in the process of writing a post on the Bucket List of Things to do in Maui which will have a bunch of fun stuff.

Thank you as always! Adding your recs to our honeymoon planning Google doc :-)

Hopefully I finish all my Maui posts before you actaully take your honeymoon!

I've never been but that pizza looks AMAZING!!!!!

Pork on anything is pretty much amazing :)

The food looks amazing…but i would see myself out watching the sunrise … I can only imagine how gorgeous it would be!

I am a sucker for a beautiful sunrise or sunset, with any luck both on the same day :)

Not sure if I'll ever make it to Paia but if and when I do I'll be sure to try some exotic Sandy Beach Gelato.  It doesn't resemble anything I've ever had and  I'm a sucker for amazing sweets, especially if coconut's involved.

Agree with you about the coconut! It’s one of my favorite treats whether sweet or savory.

Been to Maui twice but haven't done the road to Hana or been to Paia, but I hear the town is amazing and the drive breathtaking.  When we were there in February, we drove the other side of the island.  From Kapalua to Kahului it was the scariest drive I have ever done.  Some great photo opportunities, but a lot of white knuckle driving too.

The first time I was in Maui we did the road from Kapalua to the blowhole with was beautiful. But, I did hear that if you go any further it gets pretty scary! We did the entire loop of the Road to Hana and it wasn’t too bad and absolutely stunning!

Love the look of the dairy free ice cream.  Or should we call it nut-cream! Looking forward to you next post!

Even though on our tours we don't stop in Paia.  It's a great place to check out.  Many of us live upcountry and head down to Paia for shopping and grabbing a bite to eat.  We always recommended to all our guests that they come back for an afternoon / evening to check out the town.

I definitely could have spent an entire day in Paia shopping!

We are staying near Paia for our Maui visit which is not the usual for tourists, but glad to know there’s a lot to look forward to there! Thanks for the tips :)

It’s a cute little town, so have a great time!!!

How many nights do you suggest we stay in Paia? Is it a good base location for a week with a few day excursions elsewhere?

I think a week there may be too long, but it really depends on what you’d like to do. Three nights is good!

You’re right on about Paia. Don’t forget the Paia Fish Market. We ate there 2 or 3 times and it was fantastic. The shops are adorable, the shaved ice from Ulu’s…ya can’t go wrong.

This is a nice article and images are looks awesome…

Wonderful article also your photographs are look’s nice..

Maui Hideaway

Warm and welcoming, Paia, Maui is the definition of a bohemian beach town. This one-time sugarcane plantation is presently known for its chill surf culture. In fact, one of its top attractions, Ho’okipa Beach, has been touted as the “windsurfing capital of the world.”

If you don’t care about surfing, you might mistake Paia for merely a backwater town where road-trippers gas up on a trip to the Hana Highway . But for such a tiny area, it packs a lot of variety. If you stop by and look closely, you’ll discover a charming mishmash of quirky shops, rustic restaurants, and funky boutiques.

Indeed, Paia is as diverse as they come, boasting tattoo parlors, yoga studios, a kava lounge, and a Buddhist stupa. Then, there are the lovely beaches and the thriving food scene. You could easily spend a day or two here, basking in the chill, island life vibe.

In this guide, we’ll cover the top seven things to do in Paia, Maui’s hippie surf town, should you want to add some spice to your itinerary. Check it out!

Visit Paia’s Beaches

Explore the boutique shops, have lunch or dinner, indulge in a tasty treat, the great paia lha bab peace stupa, start the road to hana, bike to paia from haleakala, is paia worth visiting, where is paia located, are there places to stay in paia, what is the weather like in paia, what is the history of paia.

Baldwin Beach Park

While the beaches of Paia are renowned for their spectacular waves, luring avid surfers of different skill levels, they are still worth visiting, even if you’re not keen on surfing. These gorgeous beaches have crystal-clear waters, making them suitable for swimming and snorkeling.

Like all beaches in Maui, the beaches of Paia boast spectacular views. You’ll find plenty of nice spots to relax and work on your tan, and many of them aren’t as crowded as the resort beaches you’ll find in West and South Maui. Below, check out some of the best beaches in Paia.

  • Hookipa Beach Park – A hotspot for windsurfing and kiteboarding. Ho’okipa is also worth visiting for its gorgeous landscape and dozens of green sea turtles.
  • Baldwin Beach Park – A long stretch of sand, protected swimming spots, and spectacular sunsets. It also has bathrooms, showers, barbeque areas, picnic tables, and lifeguards.
  • Paia Bay – With its big waves, the bay is a hit with bodysurfers and bodyboarders. But it is also idyllic enough for a picnic lunch. The eastern end of the beach has lush greenery with its rows of palm trees. The western side is rockier but quieter.

Check out our post, “ The 10 Best North Shore Beaches Near Paia in Maui ,” for a full list of beaches in this area.

Paia Maui Shops

Paia has an eclectic collection of boutique shops, where you’ll find anything from trendy clothing and handmade jewelry to unique art pieces and organic skincare products. Some stores have pretty hefty prices. But considering that you’re in Maui (arguably Hawaii’s most expensive island), the shops in Paia are relatively cheaper.

Even if you don’t intend to buy anything, exploring the boutique shops in town is still a must-do. It lets you peek into the island’s rich culture and local talent. In addition, window shopping can be a relaxing experience, especially in a town as artsy and quaint as Paia.

Most boutique shops in town feature products that locals themselves designed and crafted. One of these is Heart in Paia, where you can get one-of-a-kind jewelry straight from the artist. If you’re into surfing, check out High Tech Paia, a surf and board rental shop that sells customized t-shirts and hoodies.

Paia Town

Another draw of Paia is its vibrant dining scene. Unlike the more touristy resort towns, which are rife with over-priced restaurants, Paia caters mainly to the local crowd. For this reason, you’ll find plenty of cheaper and more casual food options here.

Be sure to check out Mama’s Fish House , famous for its sea-to-table and seasonal ingredients. Located on a beachfront, this restaurant features colorful Polynesian decor and stunning ocean views. For a more casual atmosphere, head to Paia Fish Market and sample its mouthwatering seafood plates, shrimp tacos, and salmon burgers.

Not a fan of seafood? Flatbread Company serves freshly baked wood-fired pizzas with locally sourced toppings. But whatever your food preference is, don’t miss Mana Foods . Known as the best (and cheapest) natural food store in Maui , it sells high-quality, organic items, such as baked goods, all-natural dairy products, and home-grown produce.

Ululanis Paia Maui

What better way to cool off on a hot Hawaiian day than by having some ice cream? How about trying the famous shave ice? The great thing about Paia is that it has loads of shops that offer tasty treats, including organic gelato and decadent pumpkin pie.

Paia Gelato serves unique Hawaiian flavors with a hint of Italian twist. You can’t go wrong with its bestseller, Sandy Beach, a concoction of coconut candy and peanut butter with lava sea salt. If you’re craving a local favorite, head to Ululani’s Shave Ice . Pick from its soft, fluffy ice creations topped with all-natural syrups made from sugar cane or tropical fruits such as guava, mango, passion fruit, and pineapple.

Want a refreshingly healthy treat? Check out Choice Health Bar for their refreshing fruit juices and smoothies. Or, you can visit Paia Bowl ’s pop-up shop at the Better Things Cafe for delicious acai bowls. For a little bit of everything – local craft beer, organic brownies, coconut cream mousse, and more – drop by Kuau Store Deli & Market Maui .

Paia Peace Stupa

The Great Paia Lha Bab Peace Stupa sits at the entrance to the Maui Dharma Center and is a tribute to the late Lama Tenzin, the center’s first resident teacher. In 2007, the 14th Dalai Lama consecrated the monument on his historic visit to the island.

At 27 feet, the stupa features a roof shaped like a monk with hands clasped over his head in prayer. Inside is a wheel, said to hold millions of written intercessions for peace. You help spread love and peace as you spin the wheel and ring the chime.

A lovely garden with a small pond surrounds the stupa. It’s a serene spot to sit, meditate, and reflect amidst a busy day. You can also join the monks for their morning or evening prayers. Nearby is a  gift shop with handmade items, such as mala beads and Tibetan singing bowls.

Road to Hana Aerial View

After spending some time in Paia, start a trip on the Road to Hana . Spanning nearly 65 miles long, the narrow and winding Hana Highway connects Kahului to the remote town of Hana. It passes through a lush tropical rainforest, majestic waterfalls, around 620 curves, and more than 59 bridges, many of which date back to 1910. Several lookouts dot the highway, offering incredible views of the Maui coastline and the ocean.

An interrupted drive from Paia to Hana takes a little over two hours. You can rent a vehicle or book a guided tour for a hassle-free road trip that lets you focus on the panorama. Along the route, you’ll see spectacular attractions, including the Twin Falls, Waikamoi Ridge Trail, Wailua Falls, Bamboo Forest, Maui Garden of Eden, and the Hana Lava Tube .

One of the most famous viewpoints on the Hana Highway is the Ho’okipa Lookout, which overlooks the beach and makes the perfect spot for watching surfers. Some roadside shops boast the world’s tastiest home-baked banana bread. So, be sure to add this delicious treat to your shopping list.

Haleakala Bike Tours

Beyond the town of Paia lies Haleakala National Park, home to one of the world’s largest dormant volcanoes. A fantastic way to explore the area is to join a Haleakala Volcano tour . You can zipline through treetops, watch the sunrise from the mountain’s summit, or go on a helicopter ride.

If you want an excursion that blends exercise with sightseeing, go for a self-guided bike tour to Paia from Haleakala. You’ll feel an exhilarating adrenaline rush as you cycle downhill on the volcano’s slopes while soaking up the gorgeous views.

Most trips take around four to five hours, depending on your speed and how many stops you make. Once you reach Paia, you can indulge in retail therapy, relax at the beach, or reward yourself with a tasty treat.

Paia Town

Yes, Paia is worth visiting. It’s one of the most unique small towns in Maui – rustic and mellow yet funky and full of life. Along with its beaches, surfing, and windsurfing, its eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, and art galleries makes it wholly interesting. To top it all, Paia is an excellent base for exploring popular attractions, such as the Road to Hana and the Haleakala National Park.

Paia is on the North Shore of Maui, Hawaii, about eight miles east of Kahului, where the island’s main airport is. Before gaining popularity as a surf town, Paia was mainly referred to as the last stop before entering the scenic Road to Hana. Over the years, Paia has attracted not only free-spirited hippies, artists, and avid surfers but also tourists traveling on the Hana Highway.

Yes, there are plenty of places to stay in Paia. Choose from vacation rentals, bed and breakfasts, and small hotels. The town center has more options to fit all kinds of budgets. If you want a more secluded and peaceful setting, there are great accommodations on the outskirts as well.

  • Paia Inn – A boutique hotel located in the heart of Paia, offering luxurious rooms and suites with ocean views, a courtyard pool, and an on-site restaurant.
  • The Inn at Mama’s Fish House – A charming inn with spacious rooms and suites located on a private beach next to the iconic Mama’s Fish House restaurant.
  • Paia Vacation Rentals – A Paia vacation home is the best option for those looking for a home away from home.

Paia is generally warm and sunny all year round, with average temperatures between 70°F and 85°F. The pleasant weather makes Paia perfect for beach outings and outdoor activities. Summer is drier and balmier, while winter can bring lots of rainfall and cooler temperatures. But no worries, the rains usually do not last long.

Like the rest of the Maui North Shore, Paia is known for its trade winds, which makes it a popular spot for windsurfing and kiteboarding. In winter, the waves can get enormous and extremely dangerous. If you plan to go surfing or swimming during this season, be extra careful and take heed of the safety signs.

The rich history of Paia has its roots in its plantation past. In the late 1800s, when sugar plantations became the top industry in the area, Paia quickly grew into a bustling town. It welcomed a diverse population of workers from around the world. Its economy was based on sugar until the last plantation closed in the late 20th century.

Today, Paia is a vibrant community that celebrates its multicultural heritage through its food, art, and events. At the Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum, visitors can learn snippets about the colorful history of Paia and the role the sugarcane industry played in shaping Maui.

Hookipa Beach and bay in Paia, Maui

Enjoy sheltered swimming at the small areas of sandy shoreline at Hookipa Beach that are marked for swimmers.

8. Hookipa Lookout

Hookipa Lookout is another spot on the Road to Hana on the cliff overlooking Hookipa Beach. The lookout has a big parking area. You can spot giant sea turtles and monk seals up the cliff lookout.

9. Paia Bay Beach

Paia Bay beach is the closest beach to the Paia town in Maui. Spend a relaxed day swimming at this white sandy Paia beach and feasting on delicacies at Café Mambo, one of the best restaurants in Paia.

Wander slightly from the Paia Bay beach to reach the Paia Secret Beach. This Paia, Maui beach is a nude beach that is only accessible on foot and quite secluded. However, you don’t have to be nude to enjoy the Secret Beach.

Further ahead, the Paia Secret Beach is the Baldwin Park Beach.

Swimming and spending time at one of the many beaches in and around Paia is the best free thing to do in North Maui.

10. Check out a Rainforest Zipline

The North Shore of Maui, Hawaii, is covered with lush tropical rainforests. A guided eco-tour in the forest brings you in close contact with the native Hawaiian plants and traditional farming practices in Haiku – a 15-minute drive from Paia.

Image of a woman wearing a red tank top ziplining through the forest on Maui

The elevated platforms for the zipline are built into large trees, and you zip between the trees at a speed of 30 mph. It’s fun and thrilling to fly through the air. The staff and instructors do their best to keep you safe, informed, interested, and entertained.

The entire tour lasts for 2 hours, where you come across beautiful flowers, waterfalls, and unique plants. This activity is the most adventurous thing to do near Paia, Maui.

The Rainforest Zipline tour follows all safety rules and even allows children as young as 6 years to zip across. Check the latest rates and more information here .

11. Paia Fish Market

If you like seafood, you’ll be in heaven eating on Maui. Paia Fish Market is casual and affordable, and also delicious.

Image of a plate of fish tacos, salad, and home fries.

The food tastes so fresh! I highly recommend getting the homemade tartar sauce as well as the home fries.

12. Try the North Shore Zipline

The North Shore Zipline Tour adventure is available in Haiku – a 15-minute drive from Paia town. It allows you to enjoy incredible views of Maui’s North Shore and the Pacific Ocean while flying across a zipline.

Image of a kid ziplining in Hawaii

The North Shore Zipline adventure tour is set up at the historic World War II camp in Haiku. Our tour guide taught us a lot about the island’s history and culture. In addition, there’s a little museum at the site, which is a must-visit.

If you are a fan of adventure and heights, the North Shore Zipline activity is for you. The guides were patient and made us feel safe before experiencing the activity. My kids had fun dangling from the zipline and posing in the air.

We also tried other fun challenges on the North Shore Zipline Tour circuit that included suspension bridges and ladders. Again, our kids had the most fun; read my review here . Check the latest prices and more details here .

13. Try a Yoga Class

North Shore, Maui is known for its healing arts, especially yoga. There are several yoga studios, workshops, and training where different styles of yoga are practiced and taught.

Image of a woman doing yoga on a rock in Maui

Enrolling in a yoga class is among the most unusual things to do in Maui. Whether you are a complete beginner or seek to step up your yoga quotient, visit one of the many centers and register for a yoga class in Paia. Yoga classes are also held for kids of all ages.

Few notable yoga studios are Maha Yoga and Wellness Center , Maui Yoga Shala , and Infusion Barre Maui . Many yoga centers in Maui follow unique practices like Pranayama, Ashtanga, Hatha yoga, Tantra yoga, beach yoga, goat (mountain) yoga, and yoga among sharks, rays, and fish.

14. Get Shave Ice

After walking around this cute town, you’ll probably want to grab some refreshing shave ice. And there are several great options!

Image of Tobi's shave ice sign and someone holding shave ice in front of it

You’ll find Tobi’s Shave Ice and Ululani’s Shave Ice right on the main strip. Both are really tasty, legit shave ice.

15. Grab Gelato

Paia Gelato has been in Paia town in Maui for many years. The friendly staff at the store dish up varieties of fresh, authentic, flavored gelato and snacks on the go.

The gelato offerings come in cups or cones and are packed with fresh tropical fruits, cream, and unusual flavors; some are dairy-free and gluten-free too. Snacks include sandwiches, bagels, and lox.

Our kids love visiting Paia Gelato and having their gelatos served with graham crackers and peanut butter. They do coffees, cheesecakes, and smoothies for adults as well.

Their special lunch menu is equally delicious. We saw many visitors on the Road to Hana getting a takeaway lunch box.

16. Stroll the Paia Farmers Market

The Paia Farmers Market is a great place to pick up some locally grown produce or enjoy a variety of delicious, freshly squeezed juices and smoothies.

Image of a box of Maui Gold pineapple

They are in the process of expanding this market to include 160 stalls!

17. Watch Professional Surfers

Between Paia and Haiku, you’ll also find “Jaws.” This is one of the top surfing spots on Maui that professional love.

Image of a girl surfing a wave on Maui

During the winter months, the waves can reach more than 60 feet high! That’s why it appeals to professional surfers!

You’ll have the best chance of seeing pro surfers if you visit Maui between December and March .

18. Check out a Waterfall

Twin Waterfalls is located along the Road to Hana drive and is often included as a stop in the Road to Hana tour. Hike to Twin Falls is relatively easy. It’s 1.8 miles out and back trail near Haiku – a 22-minute drive away from Paia town in Maui.

Check out this Maui waterfall tour review by top Hawaii blog Hawaii Travel with Kids. Image of Twin Falls on Maui.

Since the trail is short, a hike to the gorgeous Twin Falls is the most fun thing to do in Paia town with kids. We hiked with our kids, and they loved jumping in the large pool below the waterfall.

We walked through a rainforest, crossed several waterfalls, and learnt about the area and agriculture. The entire experience is guided and takes 5 hours in total, including transportation.

Though you can visit Maui’s Twin Falls on your own, I highly recommend Hike Maui’s guided tour to Twin Falls .

19. Maui Pineapple Tour

Maui Gold Pineapple is one of the world’s sweetest pineapples. We once booked a tour of one such working pineapple plantation located in Haliʻimaile – a 10-minute drive from Paia, Maui. Read my review here .

Find out all about this Maui pineapple tour by top Hawaii blog Hawaii Travel with Kids. Image of a pineapple in a pineapple field in Maui.

The guided Maui pineapple tour took us to the pineapple field, where we understood how pineapples are grown and harvested. We visited during the harvesting season, so they let us try our hand at harvesting.

Needless to say, we also got to taste different varieties of fresh pineapples while on tour. They also have an on-site store that sells pineapple boxes and pineapple-related items.

The tour lasts for 1.5 hours, and by the end, everyone gets a freshly picked Maui Gold Pineapple!

Pineapple Tour is amongst the most popular yet unusual things to do in Maui for everyone aged 3 and above. Check out the latest prices and more details .

20. Drive the Road to Hana

I had to include this because Paia is technically where the Road to Hana starts. So, it’s fitting that I would end the article with talking about your next move.

Image of a colorful surfboard and coconuts at a roadside stand on the Road to Hana

You can grab coffee, breakfast (or a to-go lunch) and start driving the Road to Hana.

It’s all about the journey, not the destination. So, you’ll want to stop often to check out the sights, try some food, do little hikes, or hit the beaches.

Ed Gamble: Comedian swaps hot dog for cucumber on tour posters after falling foul of TfL's ad rules on junk food

The stand-up comic was told to alter the poster to be used on the London Underground because it failed to comply with its advertising policy on junk foods.

A comedian has been forced to remove a picture of a hot dog from posters promoting his stand-up tour after falling foul of Transport for London's (TfL) advertising policies.

Ed Gamble used an image of the popular barbecue staple in advertising posters for his upcoming Hot Diggity Dog tour.

But when the billboards were sent to TfL for display on the London Underground , the stand-up comic was told to alter the poster because it failed to comply with the organisation's advertising policy on junk foods.

So the 38-year-old, who recently starred as the host of the Traitors: Uncloaked, improvised by offering to replace the hot dog with a cucumber.

"I actually don't have a problem with the TfL regulations, they make sense to me," he said.

"But the new posters promote something way more harmful - the idea that cucumbers pair well with ketchup and mustard.

"I'm not sad to have to remove the hot dog, it was only featured on the poster because I wanted to eat during the photoshoot.

"Hopefully it's not too late to change the title of the show to Cu Diggity Cucumber?"

Pic: PA

In a post on Instagram, he described the incident as a "career highlight" and added: "TfL told me I couldn't have a hot dog on my poster to promote my @hackneyempire shows in June.

"I guess I'm dangerous? So I've replaced it with a cucumber. Eat your greens, Kids!"

A spokesperson for TfL said: "We welcome all advertising on our network that complies with our published guidance.

"Following a review of the advert, we advised that elements would need to be removed or obscured to ensure it complied with our policy.

"A revised advert is now running on the network and we are always happy to work with people to ensure adverts follow our policy."

Cannoli

Ancient ruins, city tours and cannoli on a family tour of western Sicily

Start in Palermo and head west for a family adventure featuring street food, ancient ruins and a magical night tour of the city.

Italians may flock to Sicily’s soft sands in summer, but this far-flung Mediterranean island is far more than just a beach destination. Families can scale Mount Etna in giant off-road jeep buses, feast on classic Sicilian sweets and delve into archaeology at well-preserved ruin complexes like the Valley of the Temples. Older kids, meanwhile, can satisfy any gangster fascination by exploring mafia heritage in Palermo and seeking out The Godfather filming sites in the quiet mountain villages. And with the island lying closer to Africa than Rome, its southerly climate makes it a great choice for off-season travels around Easter and October.

Palermo by night

To beat the heat of the Sicilian capital in summer, try venturing into town after dusk for a guided night tour , when Palermo’s landmarks are magically illuminated. The walk can take in city highlights such as the medieval Kalsa district, the Arabesque domes of San Giovanni degli Eremiti, the Norman cathedral of Monreale and UNESCO-listed Zisa palace.

Gangster’s paradise

Unpick the island’s deep-rooted connection with the Sicilian Mafia, known locally as Cosa Nostra, at Palermo’s No Mafia Memorial museum . It explains the origins of the crime cartel and the government’s efforts to quash the organisation after the Second World War. If you’ve got more time, there are also Mafia-related tours taking in the eastern villages of Savoca and Forza d’Agro, which were key filming locations for The Godfather — a good bet if you’ve got any movie-mad teens in tow.

Street-food specialities

Sicily’s original thick-crusted pizza is a must try. There’s a topping for every palate so picky eaters are bound to find something they like; the more adventurous should go for the classic, which includes anchovies, herbs and strong cheese on a passata base. For dessert it’s cannoli, deep-fried pastry tubes filled with sweet ricotta, that take centre stage. Arancini — fried risotto balls — are another favourite for a cheap meal on the go. A Palermo street-food tour is a fun way to explore for those whose kids love to try new dishes.

Sicily’s sweet-making centre

With its sloping cobbled streets and crowning castle, Erice — around 70 miles west of Palermo — has a fairytale quality. But in Sicily this town is best known for its almond pastries — especially those made by local pastry chef Maria Grammatico , whose stories have been immortalised in the biography Bitter Almonds, by Mary Taylor Simeti. Follow the sweet scent of powdered sugar down winding lanes to find her old-fashioned bakery and encourage the kids to order belli e brutti — ‘beautiful and ugly’ — a buttery bite-size pastry laced with almonds and lemon.

Archaeology discoveries

Sicily has more than its fair share of ruins and many of the best are in the west of the island. Closest to Palermo is the fifth-century Segesta Archaeological Park , around 47 miles west of the capital, which offers panoramic views from a Hellenic theatre atop Monte Barbaro. But Sicily’s finest ruins can be found at the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento on the southwest coast — a UNESCO World Heritage site with one of the world’s best-preserved Greek temples.

Volcano tours to Mt Etna

The east of the island is famed for its succession of exquisite baroque towns in the south and the cone of Mount Etna on the east coast. Towering 3,329 metres high, Europe’s tallest volcano is also one of Sicily’s seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites — and a family favourite because of how close kids can usually get to the fuming calderas. The trip starts with a cable-car ride up to 2,500 metres, from where 4x4 jeep buses carry travellers higher on guided tours of the lunar-like landscape and smoking volcano craters. Tours are available from Catania, Taormina or Messina, but keep an eye on the local news — Etna last spewed lava as recently as November 2023.

Where to stay

Villa Igiea Restored at the end of the 19th century by famous Italian architect Ernesto Basile and revamped by Rocce Forte Hotels in 2021, the 124-room art nouveau-style Villa Igiea in Palermo is rich in character. It still retains its frescoes, original furniture and decor with a modern twist, all of which are guaranteed to make kids feel like they’ve stepped into a fairytale. Rooms are individually decorated with lovely hardwood floors and luxury marble bathrooms, and it’s located near the port, overlooking an ancient Greek temple.

Verdura Resort Set on more than 500 acres of southwestern Sicilian coastline, the 205-room Verdura Resort offers uninterrupted views of the sea from private balconies or terraces, designed in a fresh and contemporary Sicilian style. The hotel is packed with facilities to make life easy for families, including a 60-metre infinity pool, a handful of clay tennis courts and four restaurants – plus five bars and a massive spa for the adults.

Paia Food Tour

Explore Paia Town with a delicious food tour and meet the chefs, business owners, and locals of this charming town on Maui.

I toured Google's new $2.1 billion office in NYC. Here are the 15 coolest things I saw.

  • In February, Google unveiled its New York City headquarters at Hudson Square.
  • Madeline Park visited the brand-new office and felt it was like an all-inclusive wellness resort.
  • Here are 15 of the coolest things about the office that stood out to her.

Insider Today

Google welcomed employees to its brand new $2.1 billion office in February in the Hudson Square neighborhood of New York City.

Called St. John's Terminal, the building is 12 stories high and was built on top of a rail terminal from the 1930s.

My friend, who works at Google, invited me to check out the new building as their guest during opening week.

Here are the coolest amenities I saw that make this office feel almost like an all-inclusive wellness resort.

1. The Great Hall

Once I got past security, I was shocked by the sheer amount of space in The Great Hall work lounge.

The lounge has super tall ceilings, cozy furniture, and a café where you can grab drinks like espresso, matcha, coffee, and chai with breakfast — all for free.

Related stories

I got an Americano, a mini egg salad sandwich, a mini ham and Swiss sandwich, and a smoked lake trout tartine.

2. The fun furniture

The chairs, in particular, caught my eye. They were super vibrant and playful.

I did a quick Google Image search and discovered that the furniture might be a mix of designer and retail. There's a nearly identical-looking bulldog stool online that goes for under $90, and the yellow chair looks like a piece called "Klara," made by Spanish designer and architect Patricia Urquiola.

3. The fully-equipped gym

An entire section of the building is dedicated to the Recreation Center. It has amenities like a spin studio, yoga room, martial arts studio, a separate space for personal training, and even a coach's office for instructors.

4. The spin studio

Google offers weekly spin classes in the private spin studio.

5. The yoga studio

The natural wood yoga studio is right around the corner from the gym and has a calming glow of light.

6. This foot-washing station

The foot-washing station has a little bench you can sit down on, along with fresh towels.

7. The martial arts studio

Next to the yoga studio, there is a fully padded and matted martial arts studio.

8. The massage room and recharge room

The rooms have various percussive and compression therapy devices.

9. "The Shop" of Google merch

Next to the lobby café, there's a dedicated shop full of Google, Android, and YouTube merch. The fitting room alone is larger than the size of my college dorm room.

The items at the store ranged from T-shirts ($30), jackets (~$100), tumblers ($15), and children's books.

10. Google-branded pet accessories

There were even pet accessories branded with the Google logo.

11. The micro kitchens

Google's snack stations come equipped with a $20,000 La Marzocco espresso machine for coffee snobs, a $6,000 digital coffee brewer for the non-coffee snobs, a pile of fresh fruit, and drawers full of snacks.

12. The cafeterias and free food

The actual cafeterias at Google's new office are the ultimate benefit and charm of working here. This cafeteria, which is one of many, is a fully vegan kitchen with a beautiful interior and unlimited, sophisticated vegan dishes.

For lunch, I ate a whipped ricotta and beet tartine, a celeriac schnitzel with sauce Gribiche, and sweet potato kimbap with a side of berries. It was all vegan and very delicious.

13. The bathrooms

The bathrooms are an amenity in itself. Google's 12th-floor all-gender bathroom has a view of the NYC skyline with floor-to-ceiling windows.

Each stall is equipped with feminine product dispensers and full-length mirrors (but alas, no bidet).

14. The coworking spaces

The best part of the office was looking into all the coworking spaces.

Google says it designed the office so that teams are assigned to different "neighborhoods" or spaces in the office — employees don't have assigned desks, so there are a lot of communal and coworking spaces.

Each coworking space is decorated with a theme. I can see how the expansive ceilings and beautifully designed spaces inspire employees to leave their homes and come into the office.

15. The view of the Hudson River

And finally, the view of the Hudson River from the building is breathtaking.

The Google office at St. John's Terminal is so big that I didn't get to explore all of it.

It was opening week, and already the office was bustling with employees and visitors like me.

Although there were a lot of people, Google seemed to have created enough space dedicated for just about everything to bring up the collaborative energy, efficiency, and even good mood of the employees.

If I worked here, I would want to show up every day.
