Sickness outbreak caused by parasite forces farm to cancel animal cuddling and feeding experiences
Gannow Farm in Worcestershire received reports of people suffering sickness and diarrhoea after farm experiences that let them get up close with animals.
Thursday 11 April 2024 13:00, UK
A farm where families can feed and cuddle animals has closed to visitors after people reported sickness and diarrhoea upon leaving the attraction.
Gannow Farm in Worcestershire said on Wednesday it had "decided to close for the remainder of the 2024 Farm Experience", which was scheduled to run until 21 April.
The decision was taken after "several people" reported feeling unwell after visiting the farm.
In a statement from the farm on Tuesday, a spokesperson said Environmental Health officers had diagnosed the sickness outbreak as cryptosporidium, a parasite with the most common symptoms being watery diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach pains and fever, according to the NHS.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) advises that you can catch the bug from the faeces of an infected animal, for example by touching a lamb and then putting your hand to your mouth without washing it first.
An emailed request by Sky News for comment about the closure received an automatic response saying "Gannow Farm 2024 Experience is now closed and all future bookings will be refunded as soon as possible".

In a statement on Facebook, a spokesperson for the farm wrote: "This is a decision taken by the team and not by governing bodies however we are working closely with them as always.
"We would like to wish anyone that is poorly a speedy recovery."
It appeared that people who commented on the post were not deterred from visiting in the future, however. "Your hand washing facilities were better than I've seen on most farms and I guess it comes with the type of work you do, can't be avoided but can only try to prevent it," one person wrote. "Rest assured it will not stop us coming year after year."
One visitor said two members of their family were ill, but added: "I absolutely loved our experience and would defo consider visiting again as this could happen anywhere."
To avoid catching cryptosporidium the UKHSA advises: "You should pay special attention to hygiene during farm visits, washing hands after any contact with animals, and eating only in designated areas."
A spokesperson for UKHSA said: "Specialists from the UKHSA West Midlands are working with Worcestershire County Council following reports of a number of visitors becoming unwell with diarrhoea and vomiting after visiting Gannow Farm, Worcestershire.
"Samples have been taken and sent off for analysis, we are unable to confirm the cause of illness until we receive the results back from the laboratory."

"Our fields (in Exeter) are partially in bloom, with most early varieties in full bloom," the website states. "Because these early beds are just a portion of our total field, we'll be selling fewer tickets, and the experience is more intimate and quiet. While the farm is very pretty, it is not yet the picturesque 'wow' we consider the full Wicked Tulips experience.
Wicked Tulips stated that "general admission tickets will be released two or three days before each farm opens."
Tickets: Weekend adults $23; weekday adults $20; Every adult ticket includes 10 you-pick tulips; Kids General Admission: $5, children under 4 are permitted free. Check here for tickets.

Federal officials are tracking the outbreak of avian influenza in dairy cattle
Scientists are monitoring the spread of bird flu in dairy cattle and other mammals to see how the virus is changing. So far, there are no alarming signs that it poses a new risk to humans.
STEVE INSKEEP, HOST:
Federal officials are tracking an outbreak of bird flu in dairy cattle. It's been detected in herds in at least half a dozen states, which scientists are watching because they're alert for any potential pandemic. NPR's Will Stone reports.
WILL STONE, BYLINE: Cows are just the latest mammal to end up with this kind of bird flu. There have been red foxes in the Netherlands, sea lions in South America, bears in Canada, and dozens more. Avian influenza generally does not spread well between mammals. One reason it's appearing more often now is probably because the outbreak is so huge. Millions of wild and domestic birds have been infected around the world.
NICHOLA HILL: It's got the largest geographic footprint we've ever seen.
STONE: That's Nichola Hill, a disease ecologist at the University of Massachusetts Boston.
HILL: So it's creating all of these new transmission pathways that we didn't know existed.
STONE: It's still not clear exactly how the virus arrived in dairy cattle in Texas. Hill says so far, genetic sequencing of the virus in cows suggests it jumped from wild birds.
HILL: There are certainly mutations in those bird flu viruses that are now in cattle, but there's no evidence of it mutating in the direction of efficient human-to-human transmission, so that's really good news.
STONE: Of course, the fear is that could change the more that the H5N1 virus spreads in mammals that are in close contact with humans. The genetic data from the Texas dairy worker who was recently infected did show a mutation that's typically seen when bird flu gets into mammals. Anice Lowen, an influenza virologist at Emory University, says this is the first giveaway that it's evolving to better replicate.
ANICE LOWEN: So we're not surprised by it. It's not a good sign, but we also know that it's not enough to really create pandemic potential.
STONE: What would be concerning? Changes that allow avian influenza to easily infect humans. That could happen if the virus adapts to lock onto the receptors in the upper respiratory tract of humans.
LOWEN: Different receptors are used by influenza viruses in different species, so we're not seeing a lot of evolution in that function of the virus.
STONE: At least not when there's been spillover into mammals so far. Lowen says luckily, cows are not hosts for other influenza A viruses that could mix with this bird flu and spawn new, dangerous versions. She'd be much more worried if it were spreading in pigs.
LOWEN: Because influenza A viruses are widespread in pigs, and those viruses that circulate in pigs are quite similar to the viruses that circulate in humans.
STONE: Scientists have also used lab experiments with ferrets to model how this version of bird flu spreads. A study from the CDC looked at the virus isolated from a severe human case. It had a high capacity to replicate in human cells, but required direct contact between the animals to spread. Darwyn Kobasa led his own study at Canada's National Microbiology Laboratory, this looking at virus found in wild animals, including a hawk.
DARWYN KOBASA: It very rapidly transmitted by contact from infected to uninfected animals, and in the originally uninfected animals, it caused lethal infection.
STONE: He says there was also preliminary evidence suggesting it may be able to spread from one animal to another in the air, but that did not lead to severe illness, and there are many caveats. Ferrets are not the same as humans.
KOBASA: We certainly don't see any changes that would suggest that there's any way to support efficient airborne transmission.
STONE: When it comes to dairy cattle, it's not really looking like a respiratory illness. There's not much virus in the nasal swabs. Instead, it's mostly in the milk.
DAVID SWAYNE: A lot of virus in the milk.
STONE: David Swayne is a veterinarian who spent decades studying avian influenza.
SWAYNE: At least some of the hypotheses are is that the transmission is actually occurring in a very unique and defined environment.
STONE: Maybe in the milking parlor, maybe as the cattle are being transported. It's still not clear. Overall, Swayne is not alarmed.
SWAYNE: It is different from previous outbreaks 'cause we do have wild mammals infected, and now we have dairy cows, but the details tell us that we're not to a point where we have a high level of concern.
STONE: After all, he says, only a handful of human cases have been reported worldwide.

How does the solar eclipse affect animals? Veterinarians share insights and pet safety tips
By Aliza Chasan
Updated on: April 8, 2024 / 4:54 PM EDT / CBS News
With around 180 million people living in or near the 2024 solar eclipse path of totality, many pet owners have been wondering how the eclipse may impact animal behaviors and how their pets might react.
Veterinarians said they've been fielding questions from some concerned pet owners about the eclipse's impact on animals. Ultimately, there isn't a clear answer for pet owners because eclipses happen so infrequently. Researchers did plan to watch animal reactions during the April 8 eclipse to learn more about how it affects animals.
"There's not a lot of scientific research done on this topic of animals and eclipses mostly because they don't come often," said American Kennel Club Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. Jerry Klein. "And a lot of it's just been anecdotal reports and just volunteering information."
How does a solar eclipse affect animals?
Though there isn't a lot of information out there, veterinarians and animal researchers do have some idea how the eclipse may impact dogs, cats and more.
"Most animals will be overall unaffected by the eclipse, but pet owners may notice brief periods of confusion, and dogs and cats may exhibit fear and confusion," said Dr. Katie Krebs, a veterinarian and professor at University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine.
Pets may hide, howl, pace or pant during the eclipse, Krebs said. As the sky darkens, some pets may start their nighttime routine early.
The average indoor dog or cat is likely not going to be affected by the eclipse, said Dr. Rebecca Greenstein, veterinary expert with pet care company Rover.
"So owners should take heart and take comfort in knowing that," Greenstein said.
Why do solar eclipses affect animals?
It's not so much the eclipse that affects pets, but the behavior of people, Klein said.
"They'll take their cues from us," Klein said. "So if they're kept indoors and we don't try to force them into a situation that's peculiar, there should be minimal to none as far as reactions."
Many people will gather at eclipse parties and those large gatherings can impact pets if they're brought along, Klein said. The travel, noise and crowds can be stressful for animals.
Some animals that depend more on the light-dark cycle, like birds, may be more affected because the sky will darken during the eclipse, Krebs said.
"Things like fireworks and thunderstorms are probably a much more significant phenomenon than an eclipse that's lasting only a few minutes," Greenstein said.
Can animals look at the eclipse without going blind?
Animals generally know not to stare at the sun themselves — they've learned that doing so can temporarily blind them, leaving them vulnerable.
"Dogs know that if something hurts them, they probably shouldn't do it," said Klein. "So left to their own devices, dogs are probably not going to stare at the sun."
Pets may look up if they see the people around them are preoccupied with looking up at the sky, vets said.
"Dogs follow your cues, so if you're preoccupied with looking up, your dog is looking to your cues to figure out how to behave," Greenstein said. "So this may be a time to either not bring them along, or if you are, to reassure them with their favorite toy or treat and just keep them preoccupied with what's going on at ground level."
Pet owners do not need special eclipse glasses for their dog or cat, Krebs said.
If you have a pair of eclipse glasses around, be careful not to leave them unattended with your pet, who may chew on or eat them, Klein said. Eclipse glasses that have scratches or punctures should not be used.
Should you keep your pets inside or outside during the solar eclipse?
Veterinarians agree that it's likely best to keep pets inside during the eclipse, especially if they're stressed by crowds or events like storms or fireworks.
"If possible, keep them indoors in a comfortable environment where they will feel more secure because the feeling of this is probably the most important thing," Klein said.
Owners planning to go to eclipse events should be respectful of their pet's boundaries.
"Not all animals do well with large crowds or with you being distracted with other things, so leaving them at home or calling a trusted pet sitter are probably the best bet," Greenstein said.
At home, owners can try distracting a pet with a favorite toy, vets said. Pets who are often anxious may benefit from anti-anxiety medication during the eclipse, but owners should check with their veterinarian for specifics before giving their dog or cat any medication, Krebs said.
"If you plan to stay home during the eclipse, your pet may seek out extra attention or comfort, so providing them with extra comfort and reassurance may help," Krebs said.
More pet safety tips to keep in mind
If you've decided to take your dog to an eclipse event, it's important to make sure they're microchipped with current info in case they get stressed and run away, Klein said. While there, make sure they're well controlled on a leash.
"By and large, we're not thinking this represents any major danger, but definitely pet owners should use their judgment," Greenstein said.

See how the eclipse transformed America, city by city
For weeks, if not months, those who have seen one repeated to anyone who would listen: There’s nothing like experiencing the totality of a solar eclipse.
For some of them, this was a second time in six and a half years experiencing the eerie calm when the moon passes in front of the sun, at least for a few minutes. And yet, they were just as awestruck.
For others, it was a likely last opportunity to witness such a celestial phenomenon for two decades. It inspired gasps and smiles, solemnity and excitement.
Here is how it looked as the moon’s shadow crossed three countries and 13 U.S. states, with the time of totality in Eastern time.
El Salto, MX
2:10 — 2:14 p.m.
Uvalde, tex., 2:29 — 2:33 p.m., russellville, ark., 2:50 — 2:54 p.m., carbondale, ill., 2:59 — 3:03 p.m., bloomington, ind., 3:04 — 3:08 p.m., tiffin, ohio, 3:11 — 3:15 p.m., littleton, maine, 3:32 — 3:35 p.m..
Time of totality
El salto, mexico.
A group of professors and students traveled from the United States to El Salto to conduct the most thorough experiment ever using an eclipse to test Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity. Einstein’s idea held that the massive sun would bend the light of surrounding stars more than previously estimated, proving that matter can pull and warp space and time.
The researchers used five telescopes to measure that effect more closely than ever, measuring stars that appear so close to the sun’s edge they can only be viewed during an eclipse.
After a countdown in Spanish, the sun darkened, and the data collection began. “TOTALITY,” yelled Sam Jeffe, a third-year physics major at Willamette University as it appeared in the telescopes’ lenses. “And it’s clear!”
Researchers will feed the data into the computer program, which will analyze the position of the stars and determine how the sun bent the light around them. But, for now, more than half the battle was done.
2:27 — 2:31 p.m.
Eagle pass, tex..
On U.S. soil, totality first came into view in the border city of Eagle Pass, Tex., where a crowd gathered at a football field erupted into cheers as the skies darkened above them.
A singer crooned, “I’m walking on sunshine!” People put on protective glasses and craned their necks toward the sky. Many began to clap.
Vita Garza Flores, 76, traveled from Northern California to see the eclipse in the city where she was born. She brought her daughter and brother along with her.
She grabbed her eclipse glasses, positioning them across her sunglasses: “Wow!”
Students from Uvalde High School were also among the citizen scientists using the eclipse to learn more about the sun and its effects on Earth.
They joined Southwest Texas Junior College’s STEM club in participating in a program known as the Citizen Continental-America Telescope Eclipse. Called Citizen CATE, it will combine short videos of the eclipse taken via telescope into an hour-long movie that NASA says will detail magnetic structure within the sun’s corona and reveal its density. That will help scientists to measure the strength of the solar wind — charged particles that can disrupt electricity grids and produce auroras when they reach Earth.
In Russellville, NASA gathered scientists and broadcast the eclipse’s progress live online. Tourists gathered there, too, wearing T-shirts that declared, “I got mooned at the eclipse.”
A jazz band from Arkansas Tech University played. NASA hosted workshops and Q&A sessions with scientists, at least one of whom has been to space: Among the visitors were Mike Massimino, a veteran of NASA space flight missions to upgrade the Hubble Space Telescope in 2002 and 2009.
Carbondale, Ill., earned the title of “eclipse crossroads of America,” having fallen in the path of totality for a 2017 solar eclipse as well as the event on Monday. This time, at least, the skies were clear for totality, and a full stadium of eclipse fans burst into collective screams when the moment came.
“This is so much better than 2017,” a one commentator on NASA’s live broadcast noted. “It’s so much darker than 2017.”
To many of those who experienced it, the eclipse was a spiritual event. In Bloomington, Buddhist monks marked it with a puja ceremony, a “ritual honoring and promoting inner and planetary healing,” according to the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center.
Eclipse watchers flocked to Yellowwood Lake where they could experience the eclipse in nature.
When the last pulses of the sun’s rays make their way to Earth before an eclipse enters totality, they appear like a brilliant diamond set on a golden ring. In Tiffin, that meant a chance for some “unforgettable” weddings at an event called “Elope at the Eclipse.”
3:18 — 3:21 p.m.
Niagara falls, n.y..
Crowds flocked to landmarks across the path of totality for a memorable view. At Niagara Falls, despite a thick blanket of clouds, people gathered on the banks of the Niagara River and trained their phone cameras toward the sky. Streetlights turned on, if only briefly, when darkness descended.
The moon’s shadow reached North America at the beaches of Mazatlan, Mexico, just after 2:07 p.m. Eastern time. Just about 90 minutes later, it crossed the wilderness of northern Maine, on its way toward Canada, and then, the North Atlantic.
A total solar eclipse will next dim communities in the contiguous United States in 2044, but only in parts of Montana and the Dakotas. The country will have to wait one more year for the next coast-to-coast phenomenon, a total eclipse that will stretch from California to Florida on Aug. 12, 2045. It will be a Saturday.

Remains presumed to be missing Utah teen Dylan Rounds located two years after his disappearance
On April 9, 2024, the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office in Utah announced that a body presumed to be missing 19-year-old Dylan Rounds had been found in Lucin, Utah.
In June 2022, Dylan’s case was featured in Dateline’s ‘Missing in America’ series. Dateline spoke with his parents, Justin Rounds and Candice Cooley. They said that Dylan grew up in Idaho but owned a farm in Lucin that he purchased with his grandfather in 2019. He spent most nights living in his camper on the farm.
On Saturday, May 28, 2022, Dylan spoke with his grandmother on the phone from the farm. That was the last time anyone heard from him.
A few months later, now 61-year-old James Brenner was named a suspect in Dylan’s disappearance. According to court documents , Brenner was “squatting” in a trailer a few miles away from Dylan’s property. Candace Cooley, Dylan’s mother, told NBC affiliate KSL that at one point, Brenner lived on Dylan’s property, where he helped him bale hay. She noted that Brenner’s presence never gave her “any reason for alarm.”
But Brenner was a convicted felon. In June 2022, he was charged with three counts of felony use of a firearm by a restricted person after the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office, along with the FBI, searched his trailer and discovered, “ball ammunition, ignition caps, black powder, and speed loads, all related to ‘muzzle loading,’” court documents state.
Then, in March 2023, Brenner was charged with criminal homicide, aggravated murder, and abuse or desecration of a human body in connection to Dylan’s disappearance.
According to the probable cause statement, during the search for Dylan, deputies discovered a pair of his boots. One boot had a blood stain that analysis revealed included DNA from both Dylan and James Brenner. Dylan’s phone records also showed movement on the day of his disappearance in the same area where Brenner was squatting.
The investigation showed that Dylan’s phone last pinged at Lucin Pond and a search of the pond led officials to his phone.
When officials investigated Dylan’s phone, they discovered a video on it that showed Brenner with blood stains on his arm and shirt as he was cleaning a gun. The shirt Brenner was wearing in the video was analyzed and Dylan’s DNA was found on it, the probable cause statement said.
None of the evidence found, however, led investigators to Dylan’s body.
That changed on April 9, 2024. The Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office announced that “skeletal remains presumed to belong to Dylan Rounds were recovered in the remote western Box Elder County area of Lucin.” The post goes on to say that “the FBI assisted the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office by processing the area for evidence and recovering the remains. The remains are in the possession of the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner for confirmation of identity.”
East Idaho News reported that, according Candice Cooley, Brenner led authorities to her son’s body as part of a plea agreement.
The Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office stated that they are “grateful to everyone who assisted and supported the investigation and search efforts on this exceptionally challenging case.” The sheriff’s office did not release any additional information.
