Round Algonquin Park Tour
Ride the rap tour.

Known as the grand daddy of sled tours, this 850km loop of World famous Algonquin Park is a must-do tour for sledders in Ontario. By far the most popular loop in Ontario, many return year after year to get their fix. Over the 850km stretch sledders get to experience a diverse set of terrain and riding, winding through thick maple forest , across wide open straightaway corridors, past scenic vistas, rolling hills, granite rock outcroppings, snow-covered evergreen pines, and maybe even some wildlife. The tour can be done in 3 days of ‘hard’ snowmobile riding, but many prefer to stretch it out into a more leisurely 4-5 full days, averaging about 200km a day, riding about 6 – 9 hours each day. The great thing about the RAP tour is the people you will meet along the way. Accommodations, restaurants, gas stations and local businesses love sledders and make you feel comfortable and welcome every step of the way. This loop has been called on of the best snowmobiling tours in Ontario, but it also might just be friendliest as well!
Park and Fly in Muskoka
The closest starting point from Toronto for the Round Algonquin Park Tour is Muskoka. Here’s a list of accommodations that welcome sledders, and are near the Round Algonquin Park Tour trails. If you spend the first night and the last night of your trip at these accommodations, you are more than welcome to leave your sled trailer parked on their premises for the duration of your trip. Make sure to make arrangements with accommodations for this during time of your booking.
- Tally Ho Inn located right on Trail #77 on beautiful Penn Lake, halfway between Huntsville and Dwight. Rates start at $93 per cottage midweek. Watch your favorite sports on Shaw Satellite in each cottage.
- Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville has accommodations ranging from hotel style rooms to 3 bedroom condos, as well as on-site restaurants, weekend entertainment, fuel, pool and hot tub.
- Bondi Village Cottage Resort offers comfortable cottage style accommodations with their own cozy wood burning fireplace. Ask about their 15% sledders’ discount
- Blue Spruce Resort offers comfortable cottage or suite accommodation, with ample parking for trailers and trucks
Suggested Round Algonquin Park Tour Itinerary
Day 1. Head to Muskoka. Arrive at your Muskoka accommodation for check-in. Complete any last minute errands before your tour. Grab a bite to eat at your hotel’s on-site restaurant, or one of the great establishments in town. Muskoka is a world class desination, and has many great accommodations and restaurants to choose from.
Day 2. Hit the trails bright and early, heading counter clockwise. Wind your way through the rolling hills and valleys of the Muskoka forest, and finish the day with a 37km stretch through the only snowmobile trail in Algonqin Park. End the day in Whitney, a popular sledder’s stayover. Couples Resort and Adventure Lodge are both sled friendly, and offer top notch dinners and breakfasts as part of their packages. Depending on where you stayed the first night, today’s ride will be anywhere from 135km to 180km.
Day 3. The day is yours to enjoy on the trails. The countryside changes from the dense Algonquin forest to the scenic rolling hills of Madawaska Valley. Stay overnight in Pembroke at the Best Western or Holiday Inn Express , both of which are right on the trails and across the street from an Irving Truck Stop Restaurant and gas station. Today’s ride is roughly 150km. If you want to cut down on tomorrow’s ride, stretch out today’s ride to Deep River, and stay at the Bear’s Den Lounge & Motel .
Day 4. You are going to want to get an early start for this one! This is a great stretch, with some wide open trail systems that will let you tack on a few extra clicks. A portion of the trails on this stretch are groomed double wide, as well as some long stretches of forest trail and a number of scenic lookouts. This will definately be your longest stretch on the trails, but you will be rewarded at the end of the day with hot food and accommodation in North Bay at the Best Western . They have a snowmobiler’s rate, restaurant on-site, and secure lock-up for your sleds. Today’s ride will clock in at 277km (230km from Deep River).
Day 5. The home stretch! Sleep in a bit today, you earned it! Wake up to a hot breakfast and get ready for your last day on the trails. This is a more technical section of the RAP Tour, with more turns and bends in the trail. Depending on where you stayed the first night, today’s ride will be anywhere from 135km to 180km. Stay overnight in Muskoka at the same property you stayed at your first night. Eat, drink, and be merry!

Snowmobile Touring in the Great Canadian Wilderness – The Round Algonquin Park (RAP) Tour Loop
Updated november 23, 2020.
Easily the most recognized and oldest provincial snowmobile loop in Ontario, the Round Algonquin Park (RAP) Tour Loop is still a favourite with riders from far and wide. And it’s easy to understand why – at over 850 kms, and travelling through each of Ontario’s distinct geographic landscapes, it never gets boring.
While many will choose to do the tour in three or four days, adding detours to take in the local club trails will make your tour even better… While the TOP trails are mandated by the OFSC to be groomed at specific intervals, it’s these smaller local trails that give the RAP it’s staying power year after year.
You’ll also be able take in unique sights you won’t find anywhere else, like the ice caves at the borders of Algonquin Park and lookouts of the Almaguin Highlands, so make it a five day trip and take in Ontario’s incredible winter scenery.
For a PDF map of the loop tour you can print click here .

Ontario’s Ride Around the Park
By: John Arkwright
Ontario’s famous RAP Tour has tenaciously stood the test of time, and continues to get better with age.
The Tour route was laid out in 1994 and masses of snowmobilers, myself included, began riding it in 1995. In the ensuing years it has become one of my favorite rides.
The basic loop around the perimeter of Ontario’s vast Algonquin Provincial Park is a daunting 600 miles long but it can be completed very easily in four days.
The joy of this tour is its versatility. You can take any number of side trips and make a week or more out of it.
You’ll ride through four unique snowmobiling regions: The Haliburton Highlands, Eastern Ontario, the Near North Travel Region and the Muskoka Snowmobile Region.
Every imaginable type of trail is found on this circuit: Rail and hydro lines, abandoned logging roads and, on the north side of this tour from Pettawawa to Mattawa, you’ll ride on a pipeline that offers an experience you’ll talk about for years.
At Mattawa, I strongly recommend crossing the river and taking trails MA-150 and NB-301 into North Bay. It’s a sweet ride. Also, Trail D down through South River to Emsdale is absolutely stellar.
Then there’s B Trail from Minden right up to Pembroke! The list of great trails goes on and on! The four major population centers on this tour are Huntsville, Haliburton, Pembroke and North Bay.
On this tour you’ll find excellent quality accommodations no further than 100 miles apart around the whole loop.
If you’re planning to do the RAP Tour I would suggest late January through February will usually guarantee great conditions. March riding can be excellent, but is sometimes unpredictable.
This part of the province is appealing because of its excellent snow conditions and moderate temperatures. This, in turn, makes for comfortable long distance riding.
When riding the tour be sure to stop in and say hello to Maurice at Spectacle Lake Lodge, Doug at Kingfisher Lodge and Tim at the Algonquin Motel.
These three were an integral part of putting this great saddlebag tour together. There are very few out there that offer the quality of the RAP Tour!

However, for a plug-and-play experience on the trails this winter, consider these nine loops. The variety of trails, the availability of accommodations and services, the beauty of the natural surroundings, the vast expanses that allow us to escape the daily grind and get outside and be active—it all adds up to something special, and these loops offer just that.
For many, it's not just the snowmobiling itself that does wonders—there's something truly unique about spending quality time with friends and family in the great outdoors, surrounded by fresh powder, beautiful forests and ribbon-like trails.
Depending on your level of comfort and experience, putting together a viable snowmobile route can be a challenge. Just knowing that the basics can be relied on along the way can provide a much-needed sense of peace of mind that will allow you to truly enjoy your travel experience.
The tour loops listed below have been put together by snowmobilers and volunteers with a view to maintaining selected trails at the highest possible level of quality and consistency.
Well marked, impeccably groomed, and with direct access to enough fuel, food and lodgings to enable snowmobilers to find them easily, these loops could well be the setting for your next great winter memory.
Before you head out, please check to make sure that the trails are available using the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Club's Interactive Trail Guide .

Introducing Ontario's Newest Sledding Adventure—The Epic "Wilderness Loop"
Been there, done that? Bet you haven’t, because it’s new this season! Want the bragging rights? Check it out…
The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs is promoting 25 Snow Tours across Ontario this winter and the longest one is the NWOSTA Wilderness Loop at 906 kilomtres (563 miles). That’s no surprise because big distance is a fact in this larger-than-life part of Ontario .
NWOSTA is the North Western Ontario Snowmobile Trail Association and six of its clubs operate and maintain the Wilderness Loop through the heart of the rugged Canadian Shield. This snow tour takes in 10 very snowmobile-friendly communities, and along the way riders will experience some of the best trail adventures in the province, with terrain that varies from windy bush trails to massive hills and from flat out lake riding to whoop-de-whoop utility corridors that disappear far into the horizon.
While avid snowmobilers can do the Wilderness Loop in three full days, others may want to take the time to visit must-see sights like White Otter Castle near Atikokan, the scenic viewpoint at Sioux Lookout , or the various rapids and waterfalls along the trail near Sioux Narrows . The thrill hills on the pipeline near Kenora are a blast too!
The Wilderness Loop is easily accessible. Its western side is about a two-hour drive from Winnipeg, with loop access just east of Kenora. Thunder Bay is about the same drive time from the loop’s east side with access at Atikokan. If you’re coming by sled, connector trails feed into the Wilderness Loop at Atikokan and Sioux Narrows. Snowmobilers trailering north from Minneapolis can be on the Wilderness Loop in about five hours, entering it at Atikokan, while Fort Frances (International Falls) is the entry point for those from North Dakota.
Once you’re riding the loop, you’ll find sufficient services for fuel, food and lodgings. For example, if you’re staging from Kenora (pop. Approx. 15,000) here’s what towns and services are available doing the Wilderness Loop clockwise…
Vermillion Bay (105 km/65 miles from Kenora)
