itinerary: Loch Ness & Highlands Tour

2 day tours from edinburgh to highlands

The ruins of St Andrews Cathedral

1. St. Andrews

Departing Edinburgh we’ll head north into the Scottish highlands, crossing the River Forth along the way. Our first stop is the medieval town of St Andrews, which is home to one of the oldest universities in the English-speaking world. You’ll have free time to explore this charming town which is considered the birthplace of golf, and is also where Prince William met his future wife, Kate Middleton. Highlights include the medieval buildings of St Andrews Unversity and the Cathedral grounds. For a small fee, you can also visit St Andrews Castle. Highlights include the underground mine, an infamous castle prison and the tunnels.

2. The Hermitage & Pitlochry

Leaving St Andrews, we’ll head into the heart of the Highlands passing the city of Dundee. We’ll stop at The Hermitage, a magical woodland nature reserve set deep in the forests. You’ll get to see a spectacular waterfall, walk amongst the tallest trees in Scotland and admire the wildlife! From here we drive to the Victorian town of Pitlochry for lunch. The town has lots of pubs and cafes where you can enjoy something to eat while taking in the picture-postcard surroundings.

3. Outlander

2 day tours from edinburgh to highlands

From here we drive into the Cairngorm National Park, an area of outstanding beauty. We’ll stop at Clava Cairns, a set of ancient burial grounds that date back to the bronze age. This site served as inspiration for the writer of the Outlander novels, which was later turned into a hit TV-series. We then continue our Outlander theme with a visit to the Culloden Battlefield. An important location in Sottish history, the Battle of Culloden also features in the Outlander TV Series.

4. Inverness

Inverness

Stop overnight at Inverness, the capital of the Highlands

The first day of our Loch Ness and Highlands tour ends in Inverness, capital of the Scottish Highlands, where you will check-in at your local accommodation. Enjoy free time in the evening to explore the highlights of the city. There are lots of local restaurants or traditional Highland pubs where you can try out the Scottish national dish Haggis . There are also plenty of pubs to sample the Scotch Whisky or beer from one of the local breweries. You can also take an evening stroll along the banks of the famous River Ness, where you’ll find Inverness Castle and Inverness Cathedral.

Day 2 of our Loch Ness and Highlands Tour begins with a journey to Loch Ness, admiring the stunning countryside along the way. We’ll drive the full 23-mile length of the Loch to reach the shore at the pretty village of Fort Augustus. Enjoy a 1-hour boat cruise along Loch Ness and try to spot Nessie the Loch Ness monster! Alternatively, have a stroll around the pretty village and beautiful Caledonian Canal lock system.

6. Glenfinnan Viaduct

2 day tours from edinburgh to highlands

The Glenfinnan Viaduct is one of the most photographed places in Scotland. It’s become instantly recognizable from the Harry Potter movies, where it was used as the bridge that Hogwarts Express crosses! It’s located amongst spectacular Scottish countryside, and you’ll have the option to take a short hike to an extraordinary viewpoint.

7. Glencoe & Highlands

2 day tours from edinburgh to highlands

Glencoe, in the heart of the Scottish Highlands!

From here, head to Glencoe, passing Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles. Glencoe is a valley of volcanic origins and an important location in Scottish history. It was here that a massacre took place in 1692 when many of the Macdonald Clan were murdered. Soak up the dramatic views as your tour guide recounts the tale of the infamous ‘Massacre of Glencoe’.

8. Return to Edinburgh

We’ll return to Edinburgh driving through more spectacular countryside, and passing through the Trossachs National Park and Loch Lomond. As we approach Edinburgh, we’ll see Stirling Castle in the distance and the National Monument to the Scottish hero Sir William Wallace.

Take our 2-day Loch Ness, Inverness and the Highlands tour from Edinburgh, travel in comfort in a small group and savour the delights of the Highlands with your guide: see rivers, lochs and mountains, and experience plenty of rich Highland history - with an overnight stay in the Highland capital of Inverness.

From Edinburgh we head west to pick up our Glasgow passengers*, first stopping at the pretty conservation village of Luss, on the ‘Bonny Bonny Banks’ of Loch Lomond. We descend into the dramatic expanse of Rannoch Moor, passing the Black Mount, to dramatic Glencoe, site of the 1692 massacre of the MacDonald Clan. Here we pause for a leisurely walk to soak in the atmosphere of this haunting glen, before continuing north towards Fort William and Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis.

After lunch in the Fort William area, your two day Inverness tour from Edinburgh traces the 24 mile shoreline of Loch Ness, passing Urquhart Castle, then on to Inverness, capital of the Highlands, where we arrive early evening.

After a lunch stop we move south for a visit to the old military garrison of Ruthven Barracks, built by General Wade. Then, there is the opportunity for a visit to Dalwhinnie Distillery, please note however that this is based on availability and may not always be possible. Incredible Scenery! Amazing Tour! Fantastic Driver/Guide.

“The Highlands are a must see for any first time visitor to Scotland. We are a family of 4 with 2 young adult children. We are so happy we selected the 2-day tour as there is so much to see. Timberbush Tours took the work out of deciding what sights to see and how to get to them. The itinerary was superb and we covered a-lot of ground without feeling rushed. Each stop was handpicked and the tour guide/driver offered flexibility & choices with the itinerary so we truly felt the tour was customized to our group. The small tour bus was comfortable, all the arrangements were seamless, and the amount of information & history provided throughout the tour was excellent. We felt especially fortunate to have such an incredible driver/guide > Saint Andrew was a pro: safe driver, very personable, extremely knowledgeable & willing to share his wisdom. He made all the guests feel like family and he is welcome in my home anytime he visits Canada. Seek out Timberbush Tours and ask for Andrew. We enjoyed his tour so much we rented a car and returned to see more of The Highlands. Thank you for your hospitality. A true Scottish gentleman.”

What is the difference between a Hostel, B&B and Hotel?

Hostels are budget accommodation. Many hostels have kitchen facilities where customers can prepare their own food. B&B's are privately owned Guesthouses. Guests are given breakfast (continental or full, depending on the B&B) but cannot prepare their own food. Hotels are the most expensive choice of accommodation. Rooms come with a full breakfast (unless stated) and guests are unable to prepare their own food.

What is the difference between ensuite, standard, twin and double rooms?

Double means one double bed which sleeps two. Twin means two single beds, where you share a room but not a bed. Ensuite rooms have a private bathroom/toilet/shower within the room. Standard rooms have communal facilities that are shared with other guests.

Can I book my own accommodation?

Yes, you are free to make your own arrangements if you wish! We offer a £10 discount  to those that choose to book their own accommodation!

This means that you have complete control over where you stay, and can take some time to research all of your options and pick the perfect accommodation for you and those you are travelling with!

Simply advise us at the time of booking that you will be reserving your own accommodation, and inform us at your earliest convenience of the name and address of the Guesthouse once it has been booked. We kindly ask that your accommodation provider is located in central Inverness, otherwise your Driver-Guide will be unable to drop you off and collect you.

How much luggage can I bring?

Luggage is restricted to one medium sized suitcase per person. For guidance: a medium sized suitcase is considered 60-69cm high and roughly 45cm in width.

If you have more luggage than this, you can store your surplus bags with Unbaggaged .

Unbaggaged will collect your bags at a time and place convenient to you! They then store them at a secure central location, and return them to you, again, wherever and whenever you like! We've negotiated 10% off all bookings for our passengers with code TIMBER10. Book here

We negotiate discounted rates for you, ensuring you'll always get a great deal at Scotland's top visitor attractions. You leave Edinburgh and head north across the River Forth towards the Highlands.

You travel through the beauty of Highland Perthshire and your driver-guide will look for the perfect place to stop this morning. Perhaps it will be Pitlochry, a quintessential Scottish town nestled among the hills. Or maybe you'll stop in at the gorgeous wee village of Dunkeld. We keep things flexible this morning and see what the group is interested in.

This wild heart of the Highlands teems with mountains, rivers, lochs, and wildlife hotspots and is a magnet for all nature lovers. We head to Aviemore, a bustling hub for all outdoors activities, where you can try local specialities before you travel to Loch Morlich, which is as unique as it is bonnie.

Leave the majestic mountains and step back in time at Clava Cairns near Inverness. These ancient standing stones and ring cairns are as beautiful as they are mysterious and were made famous by Diana Gabaldon in the Outlander books.

Then it’s just a short drive to Inverness, where you’re dropped off at your accommodation.

The evening is free for you to explore the Capital of the Highlands.

  • Try to spot the Loch Ness Monster on a boat trip* (April - October)
  • Survey the famous mountains in the valley of Glencoe

After a leisurely breakfast, you’re picked up from your accommodation and taken into the surrounding countryside.

You travel to the mysterious Loch Ness where you have the chance to take a boat trip along the loch and visit dramatic Urquhart Castle.

Our journey continues south through the Great Glen past Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK, towards Fort William. You stop for lunch along the way before arriving in Glencoe. One look and you'll understand why its one of the most famous natural landmarks in all of Scotland. There's also a tragic tale that’s haunted this valley for over 300 years... perhaps your guide will tell you all about it.

The return journey continues over the wild and remote Rannoch Moor and into the Lowland scenery around Stirling, before finally reaching our starting point of Edinburgh.

The cruise is subject to availability.

*The Loch Ness boat cruise is weather dependent and may be cancelled without notice.

How can I book accommodation?

Accommodation is not included in the price of your tour. To book accommodation, there are two options: either Rabbie’s Tours can book it for you, or you can book your own. For information on how to do this, please see the ‘Accommodation’ tab on FAQ page HERE .

How much will the accommodation cost?

We book accommodation with third-party providers on your behalf and each property sets their own rates. Rates vary considerably depending on the accommodation standard, facilities, location, and local demand. We therefore can’t tell you exactly how much your accommodation will cost until your request has been allocated to a specific property.

As a guide, you can expect to pay the following prices,  per person per night :

NOTE: Prices quoted are for guidance only and may be higher on some occasions, especially for last-minute bookings and when demand is high (E.g. peak season, weekends, holidays, special events etc)

Do you offer hotel pickups in the departure cities?

The UK and Ireland's historic city centres are full of narrow streets and winding roads. So, to speed up your departure, we only pick up from our central meeting points. What's more is leaving the city using the most direct route also reduces the carbon footprint of our tours.

Is there parking close to the departure point?

We don't recommend bringing your car into the centre of our departure cities. It can be hard to find parking, and there are excellent public transportation services.

When should I get to the departure point?

Arrive 15 minutes before your departure time. Due to waiting restrictions, we can't wait for you if you're late.

What happens if I'm late or miss the tour?

If you're late for your tour, our cancellation policy applies. 100% charges are applicable, and you will not be entitled to a refund or alternative.

What are your cancellation policies?

If you cancel inside these notice periods, full charges will apply and no refunds will be issued.

To cancel your booking, email [email protected] as soon as possible. The effective date of cancellation will be the date we receive written confirmation from you.

Can Itineraries change?

Your tour will always follow the itinerary as closely as possible. Your driver-guide will keep you up to date on the road, and we'll try to get in touch about any large changes prior to your departure.

Can I pre-book a specific seat?

Due to logistical reasons, we're unable to let you pre-book a seat on the bus. But our comfortable 16-seat mini-coaches have huge windows. So, you'll always get a good view.

Are there toilets on the bus?

Unfortunately, we have no on-board toilet facilities, but you'll have regular comfort breaks.

How do you cater for people with accessibility needs?

We aim to accommodate everyone. To read more information on how we do this, click here to go to our accessibility guide.

Do you take children on your tours?

We regret we don't carry children under the age of five on our scheduled tours.

You can ask us about the tours we recommend for younger children. And if your child is less than 1.35m tall, you should let us know, so we can provide them with a suitable booster seat.

How much time do I get off the bus?

We want you to enjoy Britain and Ireland. And we believe the best way to do this is to get you off the mini-coach and out exploring. So, we give you plenty of time to take photos, go walking, and explore ancient ruins.

Why do you exclude visitor attractions?

We exclude visitor attractions in your tour price because it lets you travel your way. It means you can pamper yourself with a luxury lunch or skip an attraction whenever you feel like it.

Do we need to bring our own lunch?

You don't need to. We stop in small towns, villages, and rural eateries where you can choose whatever meal pleases both your taste buds and your budget.

Should I tip the driver-guide?

Let's be honest, our driver-guides would never refuse a cheeky bonus. But it's up to you, and the amount is entirely at your discretion.

What about travel insurance?

We advise you take out travel insurance.

What is ABTOT?

You're protected by ABTOT when you chose to let us reserve your accommodation on a multi-day tour. This means you can claim back anything you've paid us if we become bankrupt. Read our terms and conditions for more information.

Glencoe mountains on a private tour from Edinburgh

Glencoe attracts visitors for its awe-inspiring scenery, walking, climbing and, of course history. As a result, great photo opportunities and incredible views are what makes Glencoe so memorable. However, hearing the Clan MacDonald’s tragic tale whilst standing in the Glen makes it an unforgettable experience.

In 1692, the Clan MacDonald of Glencoe suffers a terrible fate that still resonates with Scotland’s people to this day.

Glencoe Day Tour from Edinburgh

The Harry Potter Bridge

One of our main stops in the afternoon on our Inverness & Scottish Highlands Tour is the famous 19th-century Glenfinnan Viaduct. The incredible rail bridge spans the glen for over 1000 ft and is a classic piece of railway infrastructure.

Glenfinnan Viaduct

Glenfinnan Viaduct

Better known in modern times as the Harry Potter Bridge, the Glenfinnan Viaduct is instantly recognisable as the bridge upon which the Hogwarts Express travels.

The Glen has witnessed so much over the centuries. Bonnie Prince Charlie landed here in 1745 to rally the Highland Clans in what is to become the final Jacobite Rebellion. The Glenfinnan views and history make it an unforgettable stop on our Scottish Guided Tour.

Inverness & Scottish Highlands Tour

Inverness Capital of the Highlands

In the early evening, we check into Inverness. The largest city and the cultural capital of the Scottish Highlands.

Inverness & Scottish Highlands 2 day tour

For the best Scotland tour and experience, Inverness is a must-see. Nestled on the River Ness, the small city has an excellent choice of restaurants, traditional pubs and shops. Situated on Scotland’s northeast coast where the River Ness meets the Moray Firth makes this wee city an outstanding overnight stop. The superb choice of Hotels, B&Bs, shops and local eateries means there is a great choice for all travellers in the Capital of the Highlands.

Inverness Highlands Tour

On the morning or our second day, we travel the short distance to Culloden Moor.

Culloden Visitor Centre Inverness private tour

The Battle of Culloden was the final battle of the Jacobite rising of 1745. On April 16 th  1746, Charles Edward Stuart’s Jacobite army was decisively defeated by a British government force under William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, at Culloden Moor. Because of this, Culloden is an emotive and special place for both Scots and international visitors alike. Our 2 day Inverness & Highlands Tour means you have time to take it all in and experience Culloden Moor.

2 Day Inverness & Highlands Tour

A short journey from Culloden is Clava Cairns. A hugely significant and exceptionally well preserved prehistoric site, Clava Cairns is a fantastic example of the distant history of Highland Scotland, dating back about 4,000 years.  A well-preserved Bronze Age cemetery complex of passage graves, ring cairns, kerb cairns and standing stones in a beautiful setting.

Private Tour of Scotland

Standing stones are not uncommon in Scotland but are always very special to touch, walk around and experience.  The Outlander TV series has certainly added to their popularity.  A hugely significant and exceptionally well preserved prehistoric site, Clava Cairns is a fantastic example of the distant history of Highland Scotland, dating back about 4,000 years.

Magical Woodlands

The Hermitage Woodland Walk & Ossians Hall

Come face to face with the thunderous Black Linn Falls –  best viewed from Ossian’s Hall.

Breathe in the earthy woodland and tang of pine needles as you wander along the banks of the River Braan.

Our final stop is the Unesco protected and world-famous Scottish landmark of the Forth Rail Bridge on our return to Edinburgh.

An incredible engineering feat and still responsible for carrying all the rail traffic over the River Forth. South Queensferry is a historic location within Scotland. Queen Margaret’s ferry crossed this river as far back as the 11th century.

Tourists get more access to royal family residences with 'exclusive tours' of Buckingham Palace and Balmoral Castle

A picture of Balmoral Castle exterior with some colourful gardens

Rooms at Balmoral Castle and Buckingham Palace that were previously off limits will be opened to the public for the first time, giving visitors a sneak peek into royal life.

The royal residences were open to tourists before, but now visitors will be able to see even more of the historical locations and take "exclusive tours" with special guides.

However, it comes at a price.

Tickets for what's called "The Balmoral Experience" cost 100 pounds ($192).

Significant royal residences

Scotland's Balmoral Castle was thought to be Queen Elizabeth II's favourite residence, with the late monarch spending her final days there before her death in 2022.

It was something of a retreat for the late monarch, who spent almost every summer of her life at the estate.

"I suppose Balmoral is a place one looks forward to very much," she said in 1992.

"I think granny is the most happy here. I think she really, really loves the Highlands," her granddaughter, Princess Eugenie said in 2012.

Buckingham Palace is in central London and is an administrative hub for the royal family.

Its balcony is a centrepiece for mayor royal events, with the royals typically gathering there to wave to crowds below.

Balmoral interior opened for the first time

Before now, access to Balmoral Castle was pretty much restricted to the grounds and the ballroom.

But a series of limited tours will give visitors a more intimate look at Queen Elizabeth's summer home later this year.

Here's how the Balmoral website describes it :

"For the first time since the castle was completed in 1855, we have been granted permission to take you on a private tour with our experienced guides. "They will take you on a historical journey through several of the beautiful rooms within Balmoral Castle. "You will learn about the origins of the Castle and how it has been loved by generations of the Royal family. Travel through time from the purchase of the Balmoral by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, through to present day, where you can see how rooms within the castle are used today by their Majesties The King and Queen and other members of the royal family."

The tours are limited to 40 people per day and will only run in July and August.

Tickets cost 100 pounds, with an extra 50 pounds for afternoon tea.

Balmoral tickets sell out in a day

Within a day after local media reported the new tour, all tickets have sold out , according to the Balmoral Castle website.

On Wednesday, the website was briefly brought down by demand.

"As we are currently experiencing a high demand of bookings, you have been placed in a queue," the website read.

General admission tickets, which covers entry to the grounds, gardens, and exhibitions are still available.

The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and their four children pose for a holiday snap in 1972.

More access to Buckingham Palace

Before this announcement, the public could tour 19 state rooms at Buckingham Palace.

But the East Wing — a section of Buckingham Palace which includes the front facade and the famous balcony — has been off limits.

In July and August, "expert guides" will lead small tourist groups through the wing.

It will lead people to a room that leads onto the balcony, according to Royal Collections Trust website .

But it doesn't say if tourists will be able to go out on the balcony.

Adults will have to be pay an extra 75 pounds on top of the standard admission ticket to the state rooms — so it will cost at least 107 pounds.

There are limited tickets available for these tours, which haven't gone on sale yet.
