Upcoming Sebastian Stan Movies And TV Shows: What's Ahead For The Marvel Actor

Sebastian Stan - Avengers: Infinity War

Last week, Sebastian Stan reprised his most famous role in Disney+'s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the newest Marvel mini-series that pairs Stan's Bucky Barnes, i.e. The Winter Soldier, with Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson, i.e. The Falcon, as a mismatched duo who must find a way to work together in order to, you know, save the world. After playing second fiddle on a number of superhero blockbusters, this limited series will finally put Stan in the spotlight. That said, the under-appreciated actor has shown his talents in a number of projects over the years , including I, Tonya and last year's The Devil All The Time, as well as a few upcoming projects, which we're excited to discuss.

If you love the actor but you're only familiar with his work inside the always-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe, here are some upcoming Sebastian Stan movies and TV shows that you should keep an eye on, including April's anti-romantic drama, Monday.

Denise Gough, Sebastian Stan - Monday

Monday - April 16th, 2021 (Completed)

Monday is a hurricane of a movie , one that washes you into an utterly ferocious storm of a claustrophobic romance led by Sebastian Stan and Denise Gough. Premiering at last year's TIFF, the latest film from Argyris Papadimitropoulos ( Suntan ) is a splashy and sensational drama that can be abrasive in its approach but also enthralling as a cinematic odyssey. It'll split audiences, much like it divided critics, particularly those who expect a more traditional Hollywood romance, but this Greek-based love affair is an immersive experience, and it allows Stan to give one of his finest performances.

Also elevated by Denise Gough's excellent performance, Argyris Papadimitropoulous set out to make a "rom-com gone wrong" with Monday , and he succeeds (in my view). But I'm curious to hear what the public thinks when it arrives on April 16th. If you like passionate movies that get caught up in the fervor of romance — or, perhaps, anti-romance — you should make a date to see Monday, though it's not the best date movie .

Sebastian Stan - Captain America: The Winter Soldier

What If …? - TBA 2021 (Post-Production)

In addition to reprising his role as Bucky Barnes in Disney+'s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier , Sebastian Stan plays the Marvel sidekick in Disney+'s What If ...? , an upcoming animated anthology series that will premiere later this year. Based on the comic book series of the same name, Marvel's enticing streaming series explores what would happen if major MCU moments occurred differently. As a result, the cast is filled with a variety of familiar voices, including Mark Ruffalo, Hayley Atwell, Natalie Portman, Jeremy Renner , Paul Rudd, Taika Waititi, Chris Hemsworth , Tom Hiddleston , Samuel L. Jackson , Michael B. Jordan , Karen Gillan , Josh Brolin, Jeff Goldblum, Frank Grillo , Michael Rooker, Dominic Cooper , Sean Gunn, Chadwick Boseman , and Sebastian Stan.

Additionally, Iron Man, Captain America, Dr. Strange, Captain Marvel, and Howard the Duck are all expected to show up in cameo fashion. Therefore, it's not out of the question for their respective actors to make voice-only appearances. Aiming for a mid-2021 premiere, What If ...? promises to be a curious addition to the expansive MCU.

Sebastian Stan - Captain America: The Winter Soldier

The 355 - January 14th, 2022 (Completed)

Admittedly, veteran producer Simon Kinberg didn't make a great first impression with X-Men: Dark Phoenix, his directorial debut. Maybe the second time will be the charm? We'll see. Shortly after he finished that ill-fated X-Men franchise finale, Kinberg was attached to helm this action-thriller ensemble piece, which will star Jessica Chastain, Penelope Cruz, Lupita Nyong'o, Bingbing Fan, Diane Kruger, Edgar Ramirez, and Sebastian Stan. Already completed and ready to go, this blockbuster was met with high expectations when it was announced, particularly thanks to its premise and its fierce line-up of stars, though the movie hasn't made a smooth transition to the silver screen.

Your Daily Blend of Entertainment News

Once set to come out this January, The 355 was delayed a year due to the pandemic. Now, it'll arrive on January 14th, 2022. Granted, a mid-January release doesn't inspire confidence, but here's hoping that the cast's giddy enthusiasm makes it worthwhile. Particularly, Sebastian Stan got plenty ripped for the part , showing his ... dedication.

Sebastian Stan, Margot Robbie - I, Tonya

Fresh - TBA (Post-Production)

While details remain limited for Fresh , the upcoming social thriller that'll serve as the feature directorial debut of Mimi Cave, it has the potential to be an intriguing addition to Sebastian Stan's consistently dynamic filmography. Also starring Daisy Edgar-Jones ( Normal People ), the latest film written by Lauryn Kahn ( Ibiza ) will reportedly center around "the fear many women face every day," though that logline is deliberately vague.

It's unclear if Sebastian Stan plays a friend or foe, but the Marvel actor has experience portraying morally grey characters, notably in I, Tonya . Production began in January, as Deadline reported , and it only recently wrapped. It's unclear when Fresh is expected to be released, but it could be arriving later this year — though sometime next year seems like a safer bet. It should also be noted that this movie comes from producers Adam McKay and Kevin Messick, who previously produced Lauryn Kahn's first film. We'll keep you posted on Fresh once we learn more details about this mysterious new thriller.

Sebastian Stan - The Bronze

The Brutalist - TBA (Pre-Production)

With his first two features, The Childhood of a Leader and Vox Lux , writer/director Brady Corbet became one of the most ambitious, dexterous, up-and-coming filmmakers working today. With his sprawling narratives and intensely character-focused dramas, making films both grandly epic and intimately refrained, Corbet is a daring, impressively talented filmmaker who's worth following with keen interest — which, of course, means that I'm extremely eager to see what he does with his promising third film, The Brutalist .

Chronicling 30 years in the life of a visionary architect (Joel Edgerton) and his wife Erzsébet (Marion Cotillard) as they escape Europe to rebuild their legacies at the birth of a modern America, per Deadline, The Brutalist will undeniably be another bold cinematic effort from Brady Corbet, though one hopes that he can pull off such a grandiose vision. From a screenplay he co-wrote with his partner, Mona Fastvold, Corbet's star-studded ensemble includes Mark Rylance, Vanessa Kirby, and Sebastian Stan. Additionally, it'll reportedly shoot in English, Yiddish, Hungarian, and some Italian. Production was expected to start this past January, though it's still a little while away. Here's hoping Corbet's latest project reaches the same heights as his past triumphs.

Sebastian Stan - Captain America: Civil War

Pam & Tommy - TBA (Pre-Production)

Can you imagine Sebastian Stan as Tommy Lee? Well, you better plant that image in your imagination, because it's becoming a reality sooner than you think. Recently, the actor signed on to play the famous Mötley Crüe drummer in Pam & Tommy , Hulu's upcoming mini-series that'll also see Lily James as actress/model Pamela Anderson . It'll chronicle their whirlwind celebrity romance from 1995-1998, which infamously included a highly publicized (and stolen) sex tape, among other notorious publicity scandals, from a marriage which started only 96 hours after they became a couple.

Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee's turbulent, ill-fated marriage was a media frenzy and often quite salacious (and scandalous). It'll be interesting to see how this limited series compares. This televised dramatization comes from acclaimed screenwriter Robert Siegel ( The Wrestler ), with Craig Gillespie reportedly directing, thus reuniting the I, Tonya filmmaker with Sebastian Stan. Additionally, Seth Rogen will produce and play a supporting character. Production is expected to start this spring. You better get ready.

Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan - The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Beat the Reaper - TBA (Announced)

Based on the novel by Josh Bazell, Beat the Reaper could be a fun starring vehicle for Sebastian Stan — if it actually comes together. Adapted for the screen by Billions ' Brian Koppelman and David Levien, the story follows a young ER doctor (Stan) who finds his life caught in a tail-spin when a patient recognizes him from his past life as a mafia hitman, which reacquaints the doctor with a few unsavory characters. The book is quick and bloody in its style, from what I recall (I read it several years ago), and this proposed movie has the benefit of coming from Gore Verbinski, an adventurous filmmaker who often surprises with his eccentric work, even with the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy.

Certainly, Beat the Reaper sounds like an exciting project for the Marvel star, though it's unclear if it's set to move forward anytime soon. The last developments were in 2018, and the adaptation has had several false starts over the years, notably with Leonardo DiCaprio once attached . Recently, Verbinski signed on to make Netflix's Sandkings , so he might've moved on, but here's hoping this one works out for Sebastian Stan's sake.

Whether he's making blockbusters, small indie projects, or playing Bucky Barnes in a variety of Marvel-related projects, Sebastian Stan keeps himself plenty busy. It'll definitely be exciting to see where the actor goes next — especially outside of the MCU. Be sure to follow CinemaBlend for the latest updates on these projects and more!

The Story Behind Sebastian Stan’s Sky-High Fade

sebastian stan tour

By Eileen Cartter

Image may contain Sebastian Stan Human Person Fashion Clothing Apparel and Premiere

The actor Sebastian Stan is making a quick pivot. Fresh off his Pam & Tommy press tour, he’s onto his Fresh press tour, as in the Sundance-backed cannibalistic thriller rom-com in which he stars opposite Daisy Edgar-Jones. In turn, Stan’s really hitting his formalwear stride—not bad for two-ish months into the year!—and his look at Thursday night’s Los Angeles premiere checked off a few of our current big red-carpet-dressing talking points.

We’ve got the baggy-fit , double-breasted Hermès suit, not unlike his Pam & Tommy costar Seth Rogen’s sumptuous Fear of God fit from a few weeks ago. Check! He’s all aboard the Turtleneck Train, right alongside his fellow MCU-er Tom Holland . Check! And he’s sporting a Grooming Gods -grade crew cut with the sharpest sky-high fade we’ve seen in recent memory. Big check! (Shoutout to his cut by Shane Middleton, with grooming by Jamie Taylor.)

We know what you’re (I’m?) wondering… Is Sebastian Stan sporting a fresh fade because he’s in a movie called Fresh ? And the short answer is: no. Admittedly, while that sort of inane commitment might be something to celebrate, he’s been sporting a similar cut for weeks . And while Stan may be a hair chameleon—it’s true, just Google “sebastian stan hair”—he’s long been in favor of an “aerodynamic haircut,” and has dipped back into high fade territory time and time again. Plus, the film’s titular freshness is ultimately presumably, in reference to, well, human flesh and not the follicles that sprout out of it. Then again, either way…snip snip!

How Sebastian Stan Went From Winter Soldier to 'Winter Swoldier'

To keep up with the Chrises, Stan upgraded his diet, training, and worldview. And 2020 is shaping up to be his best year ever.

Muscle, Clothing, Red, Shoulder, Standing, Fashion, Arm, Flesh, Human body, Chest,

THE COFFEE-SHOP staff is having a silent meltdown. The peppermint tea I ordered was forgotten as soon as Sebastian Stan walked in. He orders a coffee, receives it instantly, and goes to put it down on a table. The lid isn’t fully on, and the coffee spills. It’s almost a “stars are just like us” moment, but then a barista suddenly materializes with a paper towel in his outstretched palm. “It’s wet,” he says eagerly.

Stan, 37, is wearing black shorts, a black T-shirt, midcalf black socks, and a gray hoodie missing its drawstring. He looks very off-duty SoHo, which he is: He’s back home in New York City on furlough from preparations for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, an extravagant collaboration between Marvel and newborn streaming service Disney+.

He’s also wearing a blue baseball cap, which sits slightly higher on his head than it might on the head of someone with less va-va-voom hair. That hair sent the Internet into a tizzy recently, when a poster for Falcon showed Stan with a short cut. In the past when Stan has played the Winter Soldier (né Bucky Barnes), he’s had shoulder-length hair. Next to his forehead, which is giant—the White Cliffs of Dover of foreheads—the longer style made him look very sinister.

Image no longer available

Stan is somewhat less recognizable in street clothes, but women still side-eye him on their way to the bathroom. Maybe they recognize him; maybe he’s just a little too strapping not to be famous.

As Stan talks, he maintains an unsettling deadpan, verging on a glower. “People always ask me if I’m okay,” he says, still glowering. “They’ve said I have ‘serial-killer resting face.’ No matter what I do, I’ve always had dark circles under my eyes that never really go away. Lately there might be a little moisturizer happening here and there, just in case. Preserving a couple years, or whatever.”

The more reserved the actor, the more likely he is to become part of Hollywood mythology. Between Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) and Captain America: Civil War (2016), a rumor circulated that he had gotten too ripped for the arm he’d worn in the earlier film, a wraparound contraption meant to look like a machine prosthetic. Redditors called him “the Winter Swoldier” and “Bulky Barnes.”

Chair, Sitting, Leg, Furniture, Footwear, Neck, Photography, Muscle, Shoe, Leisure,

Stan laughs when I bring it up and clarifies that he used a new-and-improved arm in each successive film. With the first iteration, he had to apply lube to slide his real arm into what was essentially two rigid metal tubes. “It was like having a massive hammer attached to me,” he says, “but it looked unbelievable in the movie, and it actually informed a lot of my body language.”

Subsequent arms were more mobile, and Stan doesn’t have to lube up to get in there anymore: There’s a sleeve inside the arm for his next appearance as the Winter Soldier. But, he concedes, he did get too big for the arm used in Civil War . “I was so insecure being around these massive fucking guys, so I started lifting really heavy and ate a lot. I remember I showed up, and I was a little bit bigger than I had been in The Winter Soldier . The arm was a bit tight,” he says. “I was losing circulation.”

Stan is not a new arrival in the Marvel universe: He made his superhero debut in 2011, with Captain America: The First Avenger . But recently he’s enjoyed a burgeoning late-term fandom as his roles (and arms) have ballooned. Beyond Marvel, he starred alongside Margot Robbie in 2017’s I, Tonya, as Tonya Harding’s jackass boyfriend. When we meet in October, he’s just returned from shooting the spy film 355 in London, with Jessica Chastain, Penélope Cruz, Lupita Nyong’o, and Diane Kruger. Another insecurity-inspiring roster.

With Stan’s constellation of anxieties—he says he’s “terribly self-aware, to the point of detriment”—he is uniquely suited to stardom in 2020. A decade ago, audiences wanted actors to be pillars of Hollywood hubris, strutting around in latex Marvel suits, muscly and impenetrable. We still want the muscles, but we also want stars to be genuine.

Aerialist, Acrobatics, Muscle, Barechested, Balance, Performance,

Marvel films can seem at odds with that national craving for authenticity. Steve Rogers, for example, becomes Captain America instantly, in the first ten minutes of The First Avenger : He goes into a machine and emerges fit, huge, and self-actualized. I ask Stan whether that narrative—man gets muscles and immediately earns the admiration and attraction of everyone in his midst—isn’t a dated, unrelatable picture of masculinity.

“When I was watching Steve Rogers,” Stan starts in, “I saw him question his identity, his alliances, the government. ‘Who am I? What is this? What made me come into this is very different than the role I am in now.’ I think it was very timely, in the sense that you could see that character evolve. Then he gives up his shield and is like, ‘I’m out. I’m going to do my own thing.’ He chooses his own life. It’s actually more relatable.”

Text, Font,

There’s an obvious metaphor there: Stan is Captain America, and stardom—and the press tours, the scrutiny, and the training that come with it—is his government, always invading his carefully fortified sense of self. As a result, he can appear very reticent in public, offering only occasional glimpses of the unguarded Sebastian Stan. Audiences live for those moments.

Stan is the anti-celebrity in the year of the anti-celebrity.

And his ambient hostility toward questioning is offset by the behavior of his Falcon costar Anthony Mackie. When alone in interviews, Stan can seem deflective and bored, but he gets an enormous kick out of Mackie, who has jumped in to rescue many an interviewer left to writhe on the hook by Stan. He is the Sebastian Stan whisperer, midwife to a charm that can be difficult to coax out.

“When I’m trying hard to find the honest moment, he sort of unlocks me a little bit. We both laugh and we find a way to have a good time,” Stan says. When I tell him that I’m planning to mine Mackie for gossip, he laughs. “Here’s what he’s going to say: ‘He’s way too serious. It’s boring. He slows everything down. It’s always these questions and, like, the stare . Give this kid a Yoo-hoo! Somebody get him a chocolate milk. Good God, put a smile on his face!’ ”

Performance, Event, Premiere, Gesture, T-shirt,

Mackie is the enthusiastic extrovert to Stan’s pensive recluse. Even though I reach him on the phone at 9:00 p.m. after a long day of shooting in Savannah—“I’m already going to bed,” Mackie says in a N’awlins drawl that sounds sleepier than usual—he’s forthcoming about Stan. He describes his costar as a hermit, a chronic Irish-goodbye-er who doesn’t offer much of himself at first. “If the FBI ever needed to get anything out of him, they’d be in very big trouble,” Mackie says. “I don’t know what the male equivalent would be of ‘resting bitch face,’ but Sebastian has nailed that 100 percent.”

His first impression, which lingered for a long time, was that Stan was a very quiet, very reserved actor. They shook hands when they met, but it wasn’t a buddy-com bromance at first sight. It wasn’t until much later, when the two were on a press tour for The Winter Soldier, that they hit it off. Mackie hung out with Stan and a few of his closest friends, and they “unlocked” Stan for Mackie the same way Mackie now unlocks Stan on press tours.

Image no longer available

Their chemistry also plays well on set. They share a dedication to their work, and they both come from classical acting backgrounds. (“He went to Juilliard,” Stan says of Mackie. “He can do anything.”) Beyond that, they’re opposites, reining in each other’s moods to a perfect, workable middle. “He calms me down when I’m ready to rage against the machine,” Mackie says. In turn, Mackie bullies Stan into having fun.

Case in point: When they were on a press tour in Beijing, they had one of those endless nights that make press tours seem glamorous. “It just went on and on and on,” Mackie recalls. “We had to do press the next morning, and he’s like, ‘I’m going to bed.’ I’m like, ‘Nope.’ I took his wallet and his cell phone so he couldn’t get into his hotel room. Then, by the time we got to the press, I was fine. He just looked like he’d gotten hit by a car.”

Muscle, Leg, Room, Model, Black hair,

Hollywood has always relished actor partnerships—from Robert Redford and Paul Newman to Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson—but now more than ever, buddying up feels like an imperative. Pairs perform, especially on social media. In November, when Stan and Mackie took over Marvel Studios’ Instagram to announce that they’d begun filming Falcon, fans were as thirsty for their friendship as they were for the show. Their dynamic is the stuff of memes: “[I] want someone to look at me the way Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie look at each other,” one fan tweeted.

I know what that fan meant. When Stan does look at you without suspicion—when, perchance, he laughs at something you say—it’s like winning a battle.

WHEN IT COMES to fitness, Stan has also benefited from the influence of a charismatic spirit guide. He played soccer and basketball at his Rockland County, New York, high school, but he didn’t start running and going to the gym until he was in college at Rutgers University. And he didn’t get really into fitness until 2005, when he was cast in a film titled The Covenant, which Stan calls “really classic.”

Text, Font, Line,

Really classic, indeed: The Covenant also stars Chace Crawford, whom Stan would later join on Gossip Girl (another classic), and Taylor Kitsch. Stan plays one of five prep-school boys endowed with supernatural gifts and sick abs.

“I got a call,” Stan says. “And one of the producers said to me, ‘Look, you’re going to have to look like John Travolta in Staying Alive .’ He’s just glistening with muscles. It’s ridiculous. I was like, ‘Oh my God.’ I started to work out with a trainer, but it was my buddy Taylor Kitsch who got me into it.” With the trainer and Kitsch as his gym shepherds, Stan began exercising in earnest.

Then, in 2013, ahead of The Winter Soldier, Stan teamed up with trainer Don Saladino, who’d also sculpted Ryan Reynolds, John Krasinski, and Liev Schreiber (and created the Men's Health video workout Superhero Shred ) . That same year, Stan starred in a Broadway revival of William Inge’s Picnic, playing a character whose defining trait is his hotness.

“Inge was writing something very important about vanity and how people were perceived in terms of being quote-unquote good-looking, beautiful, or pretty,” Stan said in a Playbill interview in 2013. “In the play, there’s something shameful and dirty about it. Our obsession with beauty has not changed. When we see something that turns us on, we either appreciate it or judge it. It’s so primal. We still dismiss people if they’re pretty; we don’t care how they feel, because they should just be happy looking the way they do. That’s something we were trying to say with this production.” Stan is less philosophical about his Picnic bod these days. “I had to be basically shirtless every night, like eight shows a week,” he says. “I really zoned in on diet, and everything transformed.”

Barechested, Muscle, Chest, Leg, Abdomen, Arm, Trunk, Physical fitness, Thigh, Human leg,

He prefers exercising on an empty stomach, so he generally starts his day with coffee—and a rice cake with some almond butter and honey if he’s feeling depleted. Today he was feeling very depleted, he says, so he had some scrambled eggs with Brussels sprouts and aioli. “I’m not going to tell you the place where I got that,” he adds, unprompted and wary, as though I might start dining there daily in a stalker vigil.

Stan is a proponent of “quality over quantity,” but that doesn’t mean he skimps on his workouts; he just knows that a 20-minute session that catapults his heart rate into the red zone is as effective as an hour of low-intensity bullshit. He runs (“I’m not going to tell you where”) when he’s feeling meditative.

In advance of the Falcon shoot, Stan started lifting weights every morning and knocking out stunt training for the fight scenes. He points out that filming an action movie is a workout in itself: You spend whole days running around and sweating in a heavy suit. “I mean, next to Evans and Hemsworth and all those guys, I feel like I’m 50 miles behind. I don’t think I can get to that size, to be honest,” he says. That aside, Stan feels, in his late 30s, better than ever. “My body right now is probably the best it’s ever been.”

THERE'S A PHOTO of Stan, age 15, on his Instagram. It’s a headshot from Stagedoor Manor, an acting camp that he attended while in high school. He’s recognizable from the brow up—he has the same broad forehead, the same voluminous hair. His arms look pale and soft, like overcooked linguine, and he’s staring down the camera with theater-kid intensity.

sebastian stan as a child

Stan lived in Romania until he was eight years old. Shortly after the Romanian revolution, he and his mother moved to Vienna and stayed there for four years before heading to New York in 1995. No, he says, he didn’t have a foreign exchange student’s social cachet in middle school. “Maybe if I was from France or something. But I am Eastern European. We left communism,” he says. “When I came here, I just wanted to be like everybody else.”

I ask Stan which of his mannerisms are typically Romanian. “You’re kind of putting me on the spot to define a whole nation—a guy who hasn’t been there for years,” he says. But he thinks for a second. “For me, based on my mother, the ‘Romanian temperament’ is perseverance—being able to handle more than you think you can. At 27, my mother was working two jobs in a foreign country where she barely spoke the language. There’s a sense of family and perseverance that’s deeply ingrained in the blood.”

Even for someone who has experienced a certain degree of stardom, Marvel fans can be a shock to one’s sense of family. Certain Marvel stars acquiesce to the attention on some level, greeting fans with a Chris Hemsworthian openness to scrutiny. Stan’s boundaries are reflexive and firm, as though his sense of self is always under attack. (Which, to be fair, it may well be: “He’s so reserved,” Mackie says, “but in this day and age that’s a very good quality.”)

Text, Font, Line,

Stan is more protective of his personal life than most actors. Celebrities often use social media to dispense calculated chunks of themselves in exchange for privacy. Stan occasionally opens up on Instagram: “Been working with this guy through years of self judgement and mental wars when it comes to fitness and LIFE,” he wrote of Saladino in a caption accompanying a gym selfie. But questions about the people in his orbit ping ineffectually against his poker face.

He attributes this to only-vaguely-alluded-to incidents in which his family and friends were subject to public attention. As a public figure, he has opted into that attention, he explains, but they haven’t. It upset him when they were the targets of scrutiny, particularly when that scrutiny came from his fans. Stan seems to be looking for earnestness in an industry that, on the whole, disdains earnestness. He “tries hard to find the honest moment,” as he himself puts it (much like how he saw a profound statement about “our obsession with beauty” in William Inge’s horny play).

Gym, Physical fitness, Room, Arm, Standing, Leg, Flooring, Muscle, Leisure, Strength training,

In this, the Marvel universe is an improbably good fit for him. We speak the week after Martin Scorsese said Marvel films “are not cinema,” and Stan is as defensive of the films as he can be without disrespecting Scorsese, one of his heroes. “All I know is that all movies affect people,” he says. “I’ve certainly experienced firsthand many people who have been affected and helped by Marvel movies.”

Captain America fans lean earnest. People have told Stan that Bucky Barnes helped them cope with their PTSD. During Q&A sessions, he’s asked questions like “What would Bucky Barnes’s major be?” and “What happened to Bucky Barnes when he fell from the train?” Stan fields those questions without sarcasm or diversion.

“They think we are these people,” Stan says, again without condescension. He’s content to take questions about Bucky Barnes, especially if it distracts fans from asking questions about Sebastian Stan. “Now we’re much more obsessed with the personality rather than the actor. We take people and swallow them and digest them and chew them up, and then we spit them out the other side. Then we’re done,” he says. “We’ve done that with numerous celebrities—people. I’ve seen people have massive ups and downs and stuff. All I can do is just try to be as honest as I can. And do my job.”

Dreamy Photos of New York, From a Captain America Actor

Portrait of Sangeeta Singh-Kurtz

When the coronavirus came to New York City in early March, the rich fled . En masse, celebrities, influencers, and other wealthy people left for their vacation homes upstate or just got stranded on the vacations they were already on . Sebastian Stan wasn’t one of those people. Although he’s been anxious, hates Zoom, and has become intimate with every nook and cranny of his apartment, he tells me he couldn’t imagine leaving New York.

I spoke with the Captain America actor over the phone last week. He’s spending lockdown alone in the city and has been getting into photography. He’s the first to admit he’s an amateur but says that taking photos of New York has helped him feel better about everything.

sebastian stan tour

“There was something about seeing these structures, these massive buildings, seeing them weathering the storm,” he mused. “It doesn’t matter what’s going on, who’s around, or what we’re facing. There’s something about the architecture, sort of like the weight of these buildings, that just exudes perseverance in a way. It just made me feel less alone.”

Below, a conversation with Stan about photography, what New York means to him, and why he found it so important to stay.

How did you get into taking photos?

I’ve been running in the city very early in the morning, when there’s hardly anybody on the street. And so I just started taking these pictures — it just made me feel better about being here during this time. We’re all coping with this thing as best as we can. Everyone’s doing their best, and everyone’s got their own version of that. And I think this is part of it for me.

There’s this great lens, this little thing on the iPhone camera so you can shoot and include more in the picture. I was just mostly sending them to my friends who live in the city but left, being like, “Hey, just remember where you’re from.”

sebastian stan tour

Speaking of your friends who left the city, you could really be anywhere right now. Why did you choose to stay?

This is where my home is. I don’t have a place somewhere else to run off to. People that don’t live here, they just picture it to be this very lonely place. And it can be lonely, but it’s really not. I just feel a tremendous amount of pride being here, because it’s where I live.

I’m in a relationship with this city, to some extent. It made so much possible for me in this country, so I don’t want to abandon it.

When did you move to New York?

After college, in 2005, and I’ve lived in the city since then. I came from Romania, and when we first came to the States, my mom fell in love with New York and was very determined to find a way for us to live here. I remember visiting when I was little, and she passed to me this idea about New York, like: This is where you come from, and this is where you invent yourself, and this is where you make it. This is where you survive.

Do you have a favorite building or spot in Manhattan?

I’ve always loved that West Side Highway. I’ve walked there through every possible problem, celebration, exhilaration, depression — like everything you can imagine. I’ve walked Seventh Avenue all the way up and down.

sebastian stan tour

What do you think the city will look like when the pandemic is over?

People here are gonna find their way and continue connecting in that very specific way that only happens in New York. The thing about this city is its inner resilience. Sometimes on my runs, I would pass another runner, and he would look at me and give me like the fist up — like, “Here we are. We’re doing it.” And there’s something very powerful about that.

And a few weeks ago, I was walking and I passed an old lady who was blasting Sinatra’s “New York, New York.” You heard it all the way down the street, and she was in the window. She must’ve been 70-something, and she was like, “Come on, let’s go!”

What’s the first thing you want to do when things are back to normal?

Honestly, I want to go to a rooftop in Brooklyn and hear massive house music playing outside, overlooking Manhattan. And have a cocktail, see the sunset setting over the skyline, hear the music, and just say “WE’RE BACK!”

How Sebastian Stan Transformed Into Tommy Lee For Pam & Tommy

Sebastian Stan

Romanian-American actor Sebastian Stan got his start on television with a guest appearance on " Law & Order " and recurring roles on "Gossip Girl" and "Kings." In 2011, he was cast in the role he is arguably best known for — superhero sidekick James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes in "Captain America: The First Avenger." Stan would reprise the role in the next several "Captain America" and "Avengers" films, culminating in the 2021 Disney+ miniseries "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier," co-starring Anthony Mackie.

In between Marvel movies, Stan has made a name for himself as a supporting player in the indie film world, working with such esteemed directors as Jonathan Demme ("Ricki and the Flash"), Steven Soderbergh ("Logan Lucky"), and Craig Gillespie ("I, Tonya"). On February 2, 2022, Stan reunites with Gillespie for the Hulu miniseries " Pam & Tommy ," a satirical look at the late-1990s scandal involving "Baywatch" star Pamela Anderson, husband and Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee, and the honeymoon sex tape that was stolen and copied around the world. Stan plays Lee opposite "Downton Abbey" and "Cinderella" star Lily James as Anderson .

The famously debauched hair-metal drummer is a far cry from Bucky Barnes, both physically and personality-wise. Let's take a look at how Stan prepared for the role.

A long development

Sebastian Stan was not actually the first choice to play Tommy Lee in the miniseries. In fact, it wasn't always going to be a miniseries at all. In 2018, the stranger-than-fiction saga of the Tommy Lee-Pamela Anderson sex tape — detailed in a 2014 Rolling Stone article by Amanda Chicago Lewis — was brought to the attention of Point Grey, the production company run by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, Variety reports. The pair began to develop the story as a feature film vehicle for their friend James Franco , who would direct and star as Lee. As development continued, however, the project was reconceived as a longer piece of storytelling.

In December 2020, it was announced that the series would be produced for Hulu, with Stan and Lily James cast as Lee and Anderson and producer Rogen playing Rand Gauthier, the disgruntled electrician who inadvertently discovered the sex tape inside a stolen safe. Robert Siegel — writer of "The Wrestler" and "Big Fan" — would pen the script, and Craig Gillespie, whose "I, Tonya" similarly dealt with a misunderstood 1990s tabloid sensation, would direct.

Mixed reactions

When Sebastian Stan and Lily James' casting was announced, reactions were mixed. Neither actor seemed to be a natural fit for the role. Online critics' skepticism was directed more toward James, in an unfortunate echo of the kind of double standard that the real-life Anderson faced when the sex tape leaked. But Stan also took some hits for lacking a certain rock 'n' roll quality that fans felt necessary to play Lee. Alternate casting options abounded in the days after the announcement, with some pointing to Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly (who played Lee in the 2019 VH1 adaption of the Motley Crue memoir "The Dirt") being popular choices. It was clear that Stan would be facing an uphill battle to establish credibility in the role.

Stan himself was unsure that he was the right person for the job when it was offered to him by his "I, Tonya" director Craig Gillespie. As he would later tell Variety , "I don't have a single tattoo on my body. So I was like, 'What exactly is making you think I can play this man?' But I was intrigued enough to want to see why [Gillespie] was calling."

A journalist ...

Despite his reservations, Sebastian Stan accepted the role and began researching the man he was going to play. For him, playing a real-life person involved as much reportage and recreation as it did inspiration. "The story is there," he told Variety . "You're a journalist at that point. You're really researching all you can and trying to understand the best you can."

To that end, it must have helped that Tommy Lee's life has been so well-documented, often by Lee himself. Born in 1962 in Greece, Lee joined Motley Crue when he was 18. He has co-written two books; the first, 2002's " The Dirt ," is credited to all the members of Motley Crue (plus co-author Neil Strauss) and is the history of the band in all its glorious, sometimes gag-inducing excess. The second, 2005's " Tommyland " (co-authored with Anthony Bozza), is a memoir by Lee with an audacious stylistic conceit: the book is narrated from the perspective of Lee's penis. Amazingly, "Pam & Tommy" dramatizes this idea in its second episode with a scene in which Stan as Lee speaks to his penis about his love for Anderson. The organ is apparently presented as an animatronic puppet voiced by comedian Jason Mantzoukas.

... But not a drummer

Reading books on his subject and studying videos is one thing; learning a musical instrument is something else. Tommy Lee is regarded as one of the greatest rock drummers in history , and Sebastian Stan had to  learn to play  before taking the role. He took drum lessons for three months leading up to production and worked hard to master Lee's signature drumstick twirl . "It's not easy to do," Stan told Variety . "My fingers were swollen for a good week and a half. I kept hitting myself in the head with it."

Lee is known as a consummate showman behind the kit and prone to eye-catching theatrics. A concert tour in the mid-2000s saw him employing three different drum sets that he would reach by flying via wire rig. But "Pam & Tommy" appears to have a more down-to-earth approach to its Motley Crue scenes, as seen in on-set rehearsal footage that was leaked to TikTok in July 2021. Stan is seen in character behind the drum kit, playing along to a backing track.

Tattoos and piercings

Pyrotechnic drumming and rock star hedonism were not all that Sebastian Stan would need to become Tommy Lee. Lee's gaunt frame, dozens of tattoos, and multiple piercings are central to his image in the popular imagination, especially during his 1990s heyday. Since Stan had none of those things, the task of creating the character of Lee from the outside-in fell to the show's team of makeup artists.

Stan fasted in order to shed his " Winter Soldier " bulk. In order to recreate Lee's body of ink — most notably the gothic-styled " Mayhem " written across his stomach — the team had to reapply his temporary tattoos every couple of days, keeping Stan in the makeup chair for upwards of two hours before filming could begin. Lily James' process to become Pamela Anderson was even more daunting — her makeup and prosthetics took over three hours to apply daily. As for Lee's famous nipple rings, Stan opted to let the makeup team do its job and fit him with prosthetics rather than get his own pierced.

His own hair

Recreating the mid- to late-1990s look of the series meant head-to-toe makeovers for not just Lily James and Sebastian Stan, but the rest of the cast as well, including Seth Rogen as electrician-turned-pornographer Rand Gauthier and Nick Offerman as his sleazy associate Milton "Uncle Miltie" Ingely. To turn back the clock on top of everyone's head, hair department head Barry Lee Moe crafted a total of 25 different wigs for use for different characters, as the show spans several years. Some looks, such as James', are iconic , while others — like Rogen's — are somewhat less flattering .

Of the main cast, though, the only actor not to appear in a wig is Stan, who grew out his own hair for the role. Moe and his team gave his hair a keratin treatment and would color it every few weeks. It's a familiar look for Stan, who wore his hair long ( plus extensions ) for most of his turns as Bucky Barnes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Like the MCU, the "Pam & Tommy" production kept a tight lid on spoilers and secrets — particularly the look of its two leads. For Sebastian Stan, that meant keeping himself under wraps, literally, both on- and off-set so as not to attract attention with his Tommy Lee tattoos. After a while, the pressure of keeping his appearance a secret began to wear on him. "I was walking around in these hoodies and hats ... just paranoid of being seen,"  he told Variety . "I was like, 'God, I hope they're finally going to release something, so you know what we look like, so we can go on with our lives.'"

His wish came true in May 2021 when British tabloid the Daily Mail published leaked photos from the set showing Lily James as Pamela Anderson filming a scene from "Baywatch." Soon after, Hulu released the first official images from the series, which included a screen test shot of James and Stan recreating a famous photo of Anderson and Lee. After months of secrecy, Stan was relieved to have people finally see him as Tommy Lee: "Honestly, it was freeing," he told Variety.

The release of the official photos of Lily James and Sebastian Stan caused an immediate sensation , with news outlets and fans alike amazed at the actors' transformation — particularly James, who is nearly unrecognizable as Anderson. If there were any remaining doubts as to whether these two could pull off such well-known figures, the sight of a bleach-blonde James chomping on a shirtless Stan's nipple ring laid them to rest.

Writer Robert Siegel already had tremendous faith in the duo, and the outpouring of public support simply proved him correct. "Pam's smart, shrewd, kind of wholesome,"  he told Variety , all qualities that James shared with the character. Siegel noted a certain physical resemblance between Stan and Lee (at least, more of a resemblance than James and Anderson share) but added, "He is just a straight-up chameleon. He's one of those guys that disappears into characters."

Stan, in turn, gave all credit to the show's hair and makeup department, telling Entertainment Tonight , "They deserve whatever awards that are given. We couldn't have done it without them."

Tommy Lee's blessing

"Pam & Tommy" comes on the heels of FX's " Impeachment: American Crime Story " from 2021, another modern-day examination of a 1990s sex scandal that dominated headlines, inspired countless late-night TV jokes, and destroyed the reputation of a woman while leaving the man more or less unscathed. The major difference between the two shows, however, is that "Impeachment" was made with the input of Monica Lewinsky, the woman at the center of its scandal, while "Pam & Tommy" was made without the cooperation of either Tommy Lee or Pamela Anderson.

Lily James attempted to reach out to Anderson before production began but was unsuccessful. Sebastian Stan, however, was able to contact Lee, though he hasn't revealed what exactly the two discussed. "He seemed touched and appreciative that I took the time to even reach out and connect," Stan told Variety . When asked about the series by Entertainment Tonight in September 2021, Lee appeared to be supportive. "From what [Stan's] told me, it's a really beautiful story," he said. "The story's actually cool; what actually happened wasn't."

Controversies

Still, there are some who take issue with the show's very existence. In November 2021, writer Hayley Maitland published an editorial in Vogue objecting to the series based on what she had seen in the recently-released teaser trailer. She feared that the series' semi-comedic tone and the presence of a well-known and liked film actor in Sebastian Stan meant that the series might gloss over or entirely ignore the fact that Pamela Anderson brought spousal abuse charges against Lee in 1998. She also feared that the show, by virtue of airing at all, would bring too much attention to the sex tape itself, introducing it to a new generation and re-traumatizing its victims — Anderson in particular.

So far, Pamela Anderson has yet to directly comment on the series. In May 2021, British tabloid The Sun published an anonymous source claiming to be a "close friend" of Anderson, who was said to be deeply offended by the show. Around that same time, Anderson's real-life friend, rocker Courtney Love , published a scathing rebuke of the series on her Facebook page. In the now-deleted post, she called the show "f***ing outrageous" and called out James by name: "And shame on Lily James, whoever the f*** she is."

At this point, Stan, James, and the rest of the cast and crew can only air the series as it is, confident in their research and artistry, and hope that it finds an appreciative audience, whether they were around in the '90s or not. As Stan told Variety , "All we can do is just sort of wait and see how people perceive it."

Thunderbolts Cast & Marvel Character Guide

Fox's original x-men movie cast replaced by 26 new famous actors in expansive marvel concept trailer, dcu superman suit reveal makes me even more confident james gunn is going to get the character right.

  • A new Sebastian Stan set photo hints at Bucky Barnes's undercover role in Thunderbolts* as he sports a new look.
  • Stan appears in a business suit with a goatee, suggesting he may have taken on a disguise for a covert mission.
  • Bucky is set to lead the Thunderbolts team, indicating the possibility of solo missions or the team in disguise.

While Marvel's Thunderbolts* movie is currently filming in Atlanta, Georgia, a new set photo of Sebastian Stan has surfaced, sparking speculation about whether it's a first look at Bucky Barnes' next MCU appearance. Bucky hasn't been seen in the MCU since 2021's The Falcon and the Winter Soldier , but he's set to return next year in the anti-hero team-up movie, Thunderbolts* . Though many details about Thunderbolts* have remained under wraps — Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige won't even elaborate on the title's mysterious asterisk — Florence Pugh, who plays Yelena Belova, confirmed filming had started in March with an official set video.

On Instagram, Atlanta Filming posted a photo of a digital camera screen featuring an image of Sebastian Stan on a film set. The photographer doesn't specify what film the photo is from, but Thunderbolts* is Stan's only movie that's currently in production. See the photo below.

In the photo, Stan can be seen wearing a gray business suit and sporting a goatee along with shoulder-length, slicked-back hair. It's certainly not a look Stan has sported when playing Bucky in the past, so it's possible the photo is from another one of the actor's upcoming projects, though Atlanta_Filming confirmed it wasn't The Apprentice .

Several MCU characters return for Phase 5's Thunderbolts, a team of antiheroes and reformed villains attempting to follow in the Avengers' footsteps.

What The Sebastian Stan Set Photo May Reveal About Bucky's Thunderbolts* Role

It's possible bucky is undercover and has donned a disguise.

If the set photo is from Thunderbolts* , it confirms a very different look for Bucky in the MCU , but that may be intentional within the story. Since Stan isn't wearing any kind of superhero uniform and is instead wearing a standard business suit, it's possible that Bucky has gone undercover on a mission for the MCU's Thunderbolts team . The group is overseen by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and will no doubt operate more discreetly than the Avengers did before them, which gives them the ability to infiltrate other organizations and events.

Based on the set photo, it would seem that Bucky goes undercover on a mission at some point in Thunderbolts* , though it remains to be seen whether it might be part of the main story or a short sequence reintroducing Bucky to the MCU. Previously, Feige confirmed that Bucky will be the Thunderbolts team leader , so it's possible he's on the mission solo, or the other members of the team are elsewhere in their own disguises. In terms of where the mission is, that's difficult to tell, though the fence and grass behind Stan do look remarkably similar to those in front of the White House .

Since this sequence with Stan appears to be filmed outside, it's possible more set photos will surface later today or in the coming days, offering more insight into whether it's for Thunderbolts* or another production. If the set photo is from Thunderbolts* , additional images and/or videos could provide context for the scene and reveal whether Bucky is undercover or if this is his new look for the entirety of the MCU movie. Hopefully, more information can be learned soon about what to expect from Stan's return as Bucky Barnes in Thunderbolts* , whether that's through set photos or official channels.

Thunderbolts* (2025)

Marvel's Thunderbolts is a superhero movie based on the comic team of the same name. The movie acts as a part of the MCU's fifth phase of films. The film sees the likes of Bucky Barnes, Yelena Belova, Wyatt Russell, the Red Guardian, and more as an unlikely group of heroes and villains brought together to fight for good.

Sebastian Stan Is Turning Heads in New 'Thunderbolts' Set Image

That's one slick looking Winter Soldier.

The Big Picture

  • Sebastian Stan rocks a traditional suit as Bucky Barnes in a new set image from Thunderbolts .
  • The MCU team-up movie is filming now, and also stars David Harbour, Florence Pugh, and Wyatt Russell.
  • The movie is set to premiere on May 2, 2025.

Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts is shrouded in mystery, and the recent asterisk in its title only adds to the intrigue. While there's speculation in the ether about what the movie might actually be — Dark Avengers , anyone? — the current lineup suggests it’s more of a follow-up to Black Widow and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier , which means a familiar face. New imagery has emerged from the set of the movie, offering a glimpse of Sebastian Stan’ s updated look as Bucky Barnes.

This time, Bucky is seen in a traditional suit, and he's rocking a funky new goatee, hinting at a possible undercover mission or simply a new, and frankly, tremendous style choice. While the photo is enough to stir excitement, it’s possible Bucky’s role in Thunderbolts might not be extensive, sparking concerns among fans that this could mark the end of his journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Let's hope not.

Stan shared his enthusiasm for the film earlier this year when he spoke with Variety , stating, "I’m excited. I’m going to go back basically in a month or so. I’ve missed it. It’s a great cast. The batting average is so high that it’s difficult to always land everything right away. It’s always been a great experience. With this one in particular, I think there’s a lot of good things."

Who Else is in 'Thunderbolts'?

Unfortunately, Bucky isn’t expected to appear in Captain America: Brave New World , which is not just massively disappointing for fans but also a strange move, given Bucky's popularity. However, they can still look forward to seeing him in Thunderbolts . The confirmed cast for massive ensemble movie includes Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova , David Harbour as Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, and Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster.

In recent casting news, Geraldine Viswanathan has replaced Ayo Edebiri in an undisclosed role , and Lewis Pullman has taken over as Sentry following Steven Yeun’s unexpected exit, both due to scheduling conflicts. This shake-up adds another layer of excitement and speculation around the film’s plot and character dynamics.

Written by Eric Pearson, Lee Sung Jin, and Joanna Calo , and directed by Jake Schreier , Thunderbolts is certainly shaping up to take the MCU in an interesting new direction. The film is slated for a May 2, 2025, release , and fans are eagerly awaiting more updates and sneak peeks as production progresses.

Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and behind-the-scenes looks at Thunderbolts as we count down to its theatrical debut.

Sebastian-Stan-Lily-James

“Pam & Tommy” stars Sebastian Stan and Lily James will reunite to star in psychological horror thriller “Let the Evil Go West.”

The film sounds very different from Stan and James’ previous collaboration, which saw them playing Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson in a Hulu mini-series. In “Let the Evil Go West,” a railroad worker stumbles upon a fortune under deeply disturbing circumstances. As horrifying visions and manifestations drive him toward madness, his wife becomes convinced that an evil presence has attached itself to their family.

Stan will next star in A24’s “A Different Man,” which premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. He will also hit Cannes, appearing as Donald Trump opposite Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohn in Ali Abbassi’s “The Apprentice,”   which will premiere in competition and is seeking distribution. He is best known for his role as the Winter Soldier in the “Captain America” and   “Avengers” franchises.

James can next be seen in the upcoming crime comedy film “Greedy People” for Lionsgate, which will also star Joseph Gordon-Levitt and is set to premiere this May, as well as in an upcoming film inspired by the Bumble founder for 20th Century Studios and Ethea Entertainment, which is set to begin shooting later this year. Her other credits include the wrestling drama “The Iron Claw” and “Baby Driver.”

Tafdrup is known for directing the Danish psychological thriller “Speak No Evil,”   which premiered at Sundance and which the 2024 Universal Pictures film, by the same name, is based on. He will executive produce the remake.
