Yuksom highlights:

About yuksom:.

Yuksom is a well known name to the trek enthusiasts. This place serves as the trek base for the famous Dzongri and Goecha La trek . Today we’ll present the case on why Yuksom is worth exploring even if you’re not planning to hike to any of the fore mentioned hiking destinations. Surely the green surroundings and quietness of the area will charm every traveller. Bordering Kanchendzongha National Park, Yuksom is a small, peaceful and pristine town. It was the first capital of Sikkim established in 1642 AD by Phuntsog Namgyal who was the first Chogyal (temporal and religious king) of Sikkim.

yuksom

Three Lamas belonging to Nyingmapa sect (Red Hat Sect) of Tibet entered Sikkim via different routes sometime around 1640-41 CE and met here at Yuksom. [P.K. Bhattacharya, Aspect of Cultural History ofSikkim (Calcutta: K.P. Bagchi & Co., 19.84)]. In Lepcha language ‘Yukmun’ means Lamas and ‘Som’ or ‘Sam’ means three. So Yuksom literally means ‘the place where three lamas met’. The western readers must be wondering Lamas? From Tibet?? Well, in this part of the world Buddhist monks are commonly known as ‘Lama’s.

These three Lamas appointed Phun-tso-Namgyal (commonly referred as Phuntsog Namgyal) of Khe-Bhumsa’s dynasty as the ruler of Sikkim in the year of 1642 CE. They gave him the title of Chos-r-Gyal / Chogyal (Dharma-raja or religious king). That means he had the total authority over the land and the beliefs of his subjects. He used to reign over a landmass many times the size of present day Sikkim. Yuksom would serve as the capital of this new found Kingdom of sikkim until 1670 CE when his son moved the capital to Rabdentse  near present day Pelling to defend against the invading Gurkhas. [I.S. Chenzong, History and Culture of Kirat People, Part I (Kathmandu : Pushpa Ratna Sagar, 1967)]

man-wearing-a-gurkha-hat

Little is known about the lifestyle and culture of the people who used to live here before 1640 CE. It’s shrouded in obscurity. Most probably Lepchas, Magars and Limbu people used to live in small fiefdoms.

Places to visit around Yuksom:

Hysterical behaviour caused by continuous stress isn’t that uncommon in this fast paced rat race that we call life for the last 200 years or so.  As one famous (or infamous) pervert pessimist philosopher of our era puts it, “Hysteria [in capitalism is] a rebellion of the subject against being reduced to usefulness.” This rebellion is simply not required if you’re spending a few days in the laid back atmosphere of Yuksom. The calmness in the air of this place will definitely prove to be quite effective if you’re badly looking for a brief relief and want to blow off some steam.

calmness-in-the-air

Within a few kilometres of this place there are many places to visit. Following is a list of some not-to-miss destinations.

Norbugang Chroten (Coronation Throne):  Right at the heart of Yuksom stands a huge 400 year old Cryptomeria pine tree. Under this tree three lamas from Tibet appointed the first Chogyal (temporal king) of Sikkim, Phunktsog Namgyal, in the year of 1642 CE. This place is not only significant in the inception of Yuksom but is integrated in the essence of Sikkim itself.

norbugang-the-coronation-throne

Kathok lake: This is a small to medium size lake in Yuksom and regarded as Bla-Sho or Soul lake. Lamas perform Tru-Sol or purification rite every year to retain its sanctity.

kathok-lake-in-yuksom

Dubdi Monastery: Built in the year of 1701 it is one of the oldest monasteries of Sikkim. Lieutenant Colonel Laurence Austine Waddell, the famous British explorer, defines the meaning of Dubdi as “The Hermit’s Cell” in his book The Buddhism of Tibet (P. 285). Many sources also define the meaning of the name as “The Retreat.” Though renovated a few times, the monastery still retains its old design and architecture. Approximately one hour of uphill walk from Yuksom through cardamom fields is quite rewarding.

hiking-to-dubdi-monastery

Tashiding Monastery : 20 km away from Yuksom this monastery was built on top of a hill surrounded by Rangeet and Rathong River. It was built in the year of 1717. According to wiki Tashiding means “The Devoted Central Glory.” According to Lieutenant Colonel Laurence Austine Waddell however, Tashiding means “Elevated Glorious White Rock.”(The Buddhism of Tibet, P. 258). This monastery is considered to be the holiest of all monasteries in Sikkim. So much so that it’s believed that just touching the monastery will rid you of all sins committed in your life.  As per local legend Guru Padmasambhaba (or Guru Rinpoche) meditated on this spot while travelling to Tibet from Bengal on 8 th century CE. The sacred Bhumchu (Bhum=pot; Chu=water) festival or “Holy Water Festival” is celebrated each year on the 14 th and 15 th day of first month in Tibetan calendar. Holy or not, this monastery located in majestic isolation is truly a sight for sore eyes.

Rabedentse Ruins : In 1670 Chadok Namgyal, the second Chogyal of Sikkim, shifted his capital to Rabdentse to defend more effectively against the invading force of fearsome Gurkhas. It’s approximately 40 km away from Yuksom. Situated on top of a ridge it provided an excellent wide angle view of the surrounding hills and proved to be a good look out point to spot any invading force. It would remain Sikkim’s capital till 1814.

rabdentse-ruins

This place tells the story of Sikkim’s past glory. The view of Mt Kanchendzongha  from here is quite captivating. The outlines of Pemyangtse Monastery is also visible from here.

Pemyangtse Monastery: About 30 minutes of brisk walk from Rabdentse will take you to this monastery. The monks Nyingmapa sect can marry and have children. So this monastery was built to house celibate “pure” monks (ta-tshang). Pemyangtse means “Perfect Sublime Lotus”. The honour of anointing and crowning the Chogyal was reserved to the head Lama of this monastery.

The main attraction of this monastery however would be Sangtok-Palri . It’s a wooden model of a celestial city full of sprits and living beings. It was envisioned by Lahtsun Chempo, the leader of the three monks who appointed the first Chogyal. He wrote about it in his autobiography. Later Lingpyo Rimpoche, the great artist who designed the dancing masks of Sikkim, spent three years visualising and building it. He didn’t use a single nail in this large doll house structure. The details and intricacies of the structures are fascinating. Only one such model exists and it’s preserved in Pemyangtse monastery.

Khecheopalri lake: This lake is 27 km away from Yuksom. You can visit this lake the same day you visit Pemyangtse, Rabdantse. This lake is uniquely shaped like a footprint. This shape is clearly visible from Bajre Top . Courtesy to our fertile imagination it’s not a surprise that there are many legends about this lake. Some say it’s the footprint of Goddess Tara, some say it’s lord Shiva’s footprint. As per Buddhist folklore it’s Buddha’s footprint. According to another Buddhist legend this lake is an abode of ‘Tsho-sMan Pemachen’ the protective Nymph of the Buddhism.

As per another legend, long long time ago this place was a grazing ground full of stinging nettles. Lepchas used this plant for multiple purposes. One day a Lepcha couple were collecting barks of this shrub. All of sudden they heard a strange sound coming from above. Looking up they discovered a pair of conch shells flying towards them. Those conch shells entered into the ground near them and the ground started vibrating. A spring of water started coming out of the ground and formed this lake. Yes this legend is published in the official website of the Ecclesiastical Department of Govt of Sikkim .

As you must have noticed by now places around Yuksom is full with centuries old Buddhist monasteries. Here we have mentioned the monasteries connected by motorable roads. There are also monasteries like Hongri Gompha, Sunon Gompha etc far interior not connected by motorable roads. We have a tailor made Sikkim monastery circuit homestay tour designed for the more adventure minded people covering those monasteries. If you have 3-4 days to spare, exploring these villages embedded deep into the forests would be a once in a life time experience.

Where to stay:

There are ample options available ranging from standard hotels to budget hotels here at Yuksom. Homestays are available little away from the main Bazaar area.

You can book few standard hotels online directly. For homestays you can mail/call us. We can book rooms at homestays as per your choice. Where to eat in Yuksom :

The standard hotels have their own restaurants and they serve food. Apart from those there are a number of small eateries available around the main street Bazar (market) area of Yuksom. These serve both vegetarian and non veg items, ranging from Indian, Chinese and basic continental.  If you are spending nights at homestays, the homestay owner family can cook food for you on request.

If you don’t mind a local liquor then you must check out a local drink called “Tongba”. It’s a millet brewed mild alcoholic drink served with hot water in a bamboo container.

All major mobile networks work at Yuksom. Data reception is not that strong in the Bazar (market) area. If you go to any of the surrounding higher elevation areas like Yuksom Colony or Guffadara you get 4G data reception.

My friend and I decided to book a last minute Trip to India to do Kanckanzonza goechala trek base Camp in 2019. and turned out to be a great decision because we had an absolutely amazing experience! From the very beginning we had lots of questions about the india trip and itinerary and Subash Tamang the owner was always quick with answers so we felt comfortable with everything.

The team from Ashmita Trek and Tours Company has done a marvellous job to ensure that my safety, logistics and lodging was organised properly during our Trek.

The guides were helpful, friendly and were always on the lookout for my well-being which I deeply appreciate. All in all we had a wonderful time and I could honestly recommend these guys to anyone interested in Sikkim Trek. Only hope I come back in the near future and do another trek!

Srashv, United Kingdom - April 20, 2019

We are a group of friends who had the opportunity of trek to Dzongri - Goechala in Sikkim. Mr. Sangay was our guide. We were given a warm welcome with garlands after our arrival at the airport. We are accommodated at good hotel in Yuskom. Judging the groups capabilities Sange proposed slight changes to the program, which proved to be good in the end. He and his team took good care of us and had a good overview of the well being of each member of our group. The cook of the group made every effort to provide a good variety of food over the days. Sangay was encouraging every member of the group and made sure that all of us stepped on the finish line. He organised a celebration after returning to Goechala. Composed, coupled with knowledge and experience, Mr. Sangay is a good recommendation as a guide.

1. A common tendency among young blood and beginners is to show enthusiasm by walking fast with excitement. Even the experienced sometimes try to show off by walking fast, this is soon exhausting and not recommended. Walk slow - warm up gradually and continue at a slow comfortable pace before pushing yourself a little more.

2. Develop a personal rhythm. Maintain your steps to synchronized with breathing. This will help minimize getting out of breath.

3. Walking in Himalayan trails with loose soil and rocks is tricky. So, avoid stepping on loose soil and rocks and place the foot flat and firm with a better grip. Always follow the rule ‘heel first’ while walking in the Himalaya trail.

4. Walking in a zigzags manner while ascending on a very steep slope is advisable. While descending walking zigzag is a good technique to avoid excessive pressure on knees and avoid knee pain and blisters.

5. Avoid stepping on loose stones and soil to avoid an accident.

6. Avoid overtaking fellow travelers on a narrow trail. Only Overtake at comfortable wide space if necessary.

7. While ascending and descending a slope or over loose stones, leave sufficient space between the next person so that any stone rolling down does not hit trekkers below.

8. Do not run down a slope. Bend knees a little while descending. Dig heels into soft snow or soft ground.

9. Our Himalayan condition is mostly wet so avoid wet grass, wet roots, and the muddy zone which can be very slippery. Be careful while walking on them.

10. Shortcuts on a foot trail should be avoided.

11. Always put-on warm clothing while taking a rest. This will help avoid getting cold, cough and high-altitude sickness

12. Respect the sentiments and traditions of the local hill people.

13. Always carry enough water in your water bottle as water is essential in avoiding altitude sickness.

14. Wear comfortable and right set of trekking boots, pants and jackets. Avoid wearing new trekking boots directly for the Trek. Get used to it by wearing before the trek. Carry all necessary clothing’s.

 Halts and Rests:

1. While taking a rest, lie against a tree trunk, a big stone, or on flat ground. Place your legs on your bags or any other higher ground. This helps regulate blood circulation.

2. Stop at any comfortable point after the first start to readjust your rucksack, jackets, or to tie a shoelace for better comfort and adjustment.

3. Do not make frequent or prolonged halts. Too many small stops destroy the walking rhythm. Frequent rests are not helpful. You should follow your own rhythmic walking pace and technique to avoid unnecessary tiredness. A stop should be made only at natural stopping points, like on the top of a ridge, or before an ascent, or at a scenic viewpoint.

4. Stop and place yourself on the safer (Mountain) side to give way for the pack animals to pass through. Avoid bags carried by the animals that can push you. Be aware of the yak's horn too.

Best Time to Visit Yuksom to Dzongri Trek

Best time to trek Dzongri Trek: The best season for trekking in this region is the summer between mid of March till June mid. After that, another right time is in the autumn during mid September till November.

If you want to go for trekking in this region then you must not go trekking during monsoon season, i.e. between (end June to mid of September) as the path of the trail becomes slippery and muddy. Also during this season landslides and loose rocks are quite common and as a result the approaching roads get blocked.

In the winter season, particularly in the month of January and February it is impossible to trek in this region. As during this period, it snows really very heavily after Dzongri and from here the trails become unapproachable and weather quite foul. Also during this time you will not be able find any guides. In winters the temperature in this region can fall below -20 degree Celsius. Occasionally some expeditions take place in the winter, but they are managed and guided with knowledgeable and experienced mountaineering guides. However it is seen that most of the expeditions that are commenced during this odd and extreme weather conditions fails.

In the summer between (May to June) the usual temperature of the day varies between (15°C – 25°C), and in the night temperature ranges from (8°C to 15°C). At Dzongri during this season the daytime temperature varies between (7°C – 15°C) and at the night varies between (3°C to -2°C).

In autumn between (Mid September to end October) the ordinary temperature of the day varies between (13°C – 20°C), and in the night temperature goes between (2°C – 7°C). At Dzongri during this season the daytime temperature varies between (3°C – 10°C) and at the night it is between (3°C to -4°C).

The trail ahead of the first view point at Goechala remains under snow till early April. However, by the month June, this part of the trail turns out to be completely accessible. However, on the higher altitude you can still find snow in some part even in September and October.

There is only one thing to be done in Yuksom – Trekking. There are some easy short treks from Yuksom which could be done with kids also. I told you about one such short trek from Yuksom in my previous post -(trek to Dubdi Monastery)

Between Yuksom and Dzongri, there is a well-beaten trek, which passes in the shadow of Kanchendjonga range through dense forest. Dzongri itself is a junction of several trails.

Yuksom serves as a base for all these treks. Guides, porters, pack yaks, tents, sleeping bags and other trekking equipment are readily available. However, we saw a group of six boys trying hard to get all these on rent (they had no prior arrangements with hotels) from market, which on that day were all booked.

How did we turn Yuksom- Dzongri Trail into a short trek from Yuksom

We decided to trek for the first half (or less) stretch of day one of Yuksom-Dzongri trail .

The day one of this trail covers a climb of 16 Km from Yuksom (1780 Mts) to Tsokha (3480 Mts). One can also stay at Bakhim that is some 2 Kms before Tsokha, at a height of 2684 Mts. It takes four days to reach Dzongri from Yuksom.

short treks in Yuksom, Sikkim

We decided to climb upon this path up to 12:30 pm and then return, as we had to reach Bliss resort in Biksthang (last destination of our itinerary) by that evening.

Watching a Landslide Effect

We started early morning and just at a distance of ten minutes walk we saw how disastrous and horrible a landslide could be. In 2004 there was a huge landslide right there.

yuksom moto tours and treks

Big boulders were lying everywhere blocking the route of a previously existing stream.

Suman, our guide, told us that on that day he was at hotel Tashigang and suddenly they heard loud sound of explosion. Initially they could not comprehend what was happening – a war with China or what? But in no time they realized what it was!

They were all trembling with fear and could not dare to come out as rocks were flying towards the hotel. Luckily they were spared by less than half a km of distance between death and them.

Not many people were there on that day and casualties were restricted to four persons – an angry face of otherwise loving and beautiful Mother Nature.

The climb started meandering past these village houses.

Short treks- Yuksom, Sikkim

People were busy in their chores.

yuksom moto tours and treks

When they relaxed for a while Rachit wanted to give it a try.

yuksom moto tours and treks

Dzo and trekking is ubiquitous in Yuksom

There was a group of people, who were packing vegetables, milk, gas and other paraphernalia, to be laden on Dzo.

Dzo is a cross between cow and yak. Trekkers and guide had started early morning; Dzos, porters, and cook etc were starting late. But they will reach Tsokha before trekkers to keep lunch and tents ready!

Suman told us sometimes the porters come back from Tsokha same day to start early next day carrying other trekking party’s things, leave them at Tsokha, pick-up previous party’s thing to be carried to next destination. Once Suman also did this Yuksom-Dzongri trail and returned in just two days!!

Reaching the first Bridge over gleaming white river

For the first hour walk is moderately difficult up to the first bridge. We plucked wild yellow berries and ate handful of them. Here and there, we had to give sides to Dzos, which were traveling to and fro carrying the trekking material.

Short treks in Yuksom

We were climbing up, and deep down there was a river of gleaming white and green water.

yuksom moto tours and treks

We reached at the first bridge, which was above that river. The river was coming from yet another roaring waterfall.

I have lost count how many waterfalls and streams we had come across in Yuksom. We all wanted to get down to river. Well we would, while returning back.

Walking further Up

We were climbing further up on a path lined with sky-embracing-trees, which were laden with white and pink orchids. This stretch was more difficult. We had climbed high and the charm of playing in that river under the bridge was luring us.

Rachit and Manish wanted to return and I wanted to go further up. Suman told us that the second bridge was not far away. It was already 12:30 pm, so we returned to the first bridge. We sat just in the middle of the stream and very near to the waterfall.

yuksom moto tours and treks

There was magic in the air and we were enjoying the surroundings of mighty mountains, gurgling of the stream and chirping of birds in perfect solitude.

Here at this place, there was nothing one could ask GOD to grant. We were in perfect harmony with nature and ourselves. Doing even just a part of a larger trek was a delightful short trek in Yuksom.

Now I know exactly why all “Rishi-Munis” and gurus chose their abode in Himalayas and places like this. It was so peaceful and blissful.

Returning to Yuksom

After spending an hour there we climbed down to Yuksom. It started drizzling as we were approaching Yuksom. Rachit chose not to take shelter in umbrella and drenched himself; enjoyment for him and worries for me!

I did not want to depart from Yuksom

We had to start for Bliss resort Biksthang around 3:00 pm and my heart was sinking at the thought of leaving Yuksom. I asked Manish – “Why not stay here and enjoy some more treks?” I am always like that – clinging to a place I like very much, but thank god! You had sent Manish as my life partner.

As always he said No, taking care of not breaking my heart and yet at the same time convincing me. I was feeling sad while leaving Yuksom but there was a kindling of another new place also. Don’t know which one was dominate, perhaps the first one.

We said Good bye and thanks to everyone for making our stay so pleasant and started to our next destination – Bliss Resort, Biksthang.

Moving on to Biksthang, Pelling

Biksthang is a very small town near Pelling. We were to follow another route this time – via Tashiding and Reshi. This road was very good. En route we stopped at Phamrong falls .

Phamrong Falls

Phamrong water fall, Sikkim

This was another big roaring cascade. There was no one except us. Very few people visit West Sikkim and those who visit, only a few of them go to places other than Pelling.

Skipping the Tashidang Gompa

Tashiding has another gompa – Suman had told us that it is a beautiful gompa where devotees from all over Sikkim gather for the Nyingmapa Bhumchu festival. There is an ancient bowl that according to a legend never dries up. Devotees are blessed with holy water from this bowl. We decided to give it a miss, we were tired and I simply dislike “been-there-done-that” kind of traveling.

After crossing Tashiding and Phamrong falls, we were driving past – ummm. I don’t know? I fell asleep.

It was almost 2 hrs drive and by the time I woke-up we were approaching Rangit Dam. From there we were continuously descending along Rangit, crossing many bridges and streams, till Reshi.

Sikkim stirs desires!

It was very scenic (where was it not?). I suggested Manish that we have four full days at Biksthang, one day we will come down to Reshi and trek along river as long as we can.

Manish floated another idea of rafting – it was sure a good place to go rafting with the kid and his not so brave heart mother as the rapids were quite gentle.

From Reshi, we started our climb to Bliss resort, Biksthang/Mangalbarey. Wherever there were two choices to go, Bliss people had put its board guiding to its resort.

We were climbing up and up – It was so serene and very very different from our past two destinations – Pelling was all about Kanchendzonga range and its monasteries,

yuksom moto tours and treks

Yuksom was wild, eternally wild

Short treks in Yuksom

and now this drive was all so somber and serene with more of terraced hills, maize farms and spread out rolling hills.

yuksom moto tours and treks

One thing was common – you will enjoy all that most of the time in perfect solitude.

Reaching Biksthang, Pelling

We reached at Bliss resort somewhere around 5:00 pm and were welcomed by their staff – Dorji, Ram and Gyurmee – the owner – a young, handsome and knowledgeable guy. We had a brief talk with Gyurmee about our experiences in Sikkim so far, our stay and treks – and I saw everybody’s eyebrow raised in question – with this kid!

When I say everybody it means Dorji, Ram, Gyurmee, 5 adults of a Maharashtrian family and a retired Bengali couple. Suddenly Manish and me were not tired anymore. No matter how much you try to play it down, still your child’s accomplishments stirs something in your heart.

So this is all about fifth day of my Sikkim trip. Will write about my experiences at Bliss in next post.

Hi, compliments to your writing skills. Great read. I wanted to ask in which season you did this? Were there leeches? Are guides like Suman available for these kind of mini treks?

Hi Debaleena

Thanks for liking the post and leaving your comment and also sorry for delay from our side. We went to Yuksom in the month of May.

Regarding Suman – Generally we enquire at the hotel/homestay about someone (local) who can accompany us and guide us. Most of the time, they send a person who knows the place, vegetation, customs very well. It makes our hike/trek much enriching and safe as well.

Regards Manish.

The Travelling Slacker

Yuksom: The First Capital of Sikkim

Sikkim has suspended all tourism-related activities as of now due to the Covid-19 situation t least till September 2019. They will reopen for tourists only in October 2019, that too if the situation improves. Will update in case of any new development.

————————————

When I reached Sikkim this January, my intentions were clear and I had a bucket-list in my mind. I was going to cover all major attractions of the state except those cut-off by the winter snowfall. However, as the trip progressed, although I managed to visit many places, I started growing impatient because I was not really getting that feeling of seclusion and serenity that I usually take for granted in the Himalayas. Gangtok was too big a city for me, Yumthang too was swarming with visitors even in the off-season, and Pelling just seemed like a cluster of hotels.

Pelling

Finally, my search for that intangible “my kind of” place in Sikkim ended with Yuksom, that too on the last day of the trip. Due to my ignorance, I’d just planned it as a day trip from Pelling, something that I regret now. Looking back, I think this would have been the best place to stay for a few days, simply soaking in the country air and walking through cardamom fields. I actually asked around and found that the homestays here also are a bit cheaper than other places of Sikkim.

Pelling to Yuksom

The drive to Yuksom started from Pelling in the morning, along with Jacomjin & Abhinav. It took slightly more than an hour but not before we took a small detour to Rimbi. This was not a part of the plan but the driver suddenly pointed towards the orange plantations on the right side of the road and informed us that these are the orange gardens of Rimbi. So, we decided to take a look. First we just noticed a bunch of roadside shops selling tea and fast food, but soon realized that the path to the garden goes down from here towards the river. They were also selling them produces on the shop and one girl was selling entry tickets for INR 10. We bought tickets and quickly descended down to the orange kingdom. First I saw one tree, fully loaded with fruits, followed by another, and then the whole grove appeared till as far as I could see. The good part was that although it was unplanned, we were there at the peak of the orange harvesting season. It was a quick stop, but a good example Sikkim’s organic move.

Rimbi 5

After the orange garden, we quickly moved on towards Yuksom, passing a waterfall or two en-route, but without making a stop. Coming to Yuksom, in case you have never heard of it before, was the first capital of the medieval Kingdom of Sikkim. Later on, the capital moved to Rabdentse near Pelling, and finally to Gangtok, which is also the current capital of modern Sikkim. Present day Yuksom is a small but pleasant town, skipped generally by most tourists and visited by trekkers because it also works as a hub for many major treks such as Goechala and Dzongri as it lies on the edge of Khangchendzonga National Park, one of the newest UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India. What sets it apart is the fact that the commercial establishments such as hotels and homestays here are well spread out and not thickly concentrated like other tourist spots. They are interspersed with medieval gompas, and plots of fragrant cardamom plantations.

Norbugang: The Coronation Throne

Yuksom 30

We left the vehicle at the entrance of the town and started walking towards Norbugang as there were a lot of signage in the town pointing towards the same. We crossed cardamom patches and many single-storied, wooden houses for the next few minutes, only to spot a gigantic statue at the top of a tall concrete structure. It looked too new to be the Norbugang (But to be honest, I had no idea how Norbugang looked like). After a bit of investigation, I figured out that this is a fairly new construction, sort of a monastery with a larger than life statue of Yangthang Rinpoche at the top. Now, Yangthang Rinpoche is supposed to be the latest incarnation of Lhatsun Chempo, who was a monk present at the original coronation 500 years ago!

Yuksom

I don’t blame you if all these sound confusing. The statue also is strikingly brown in colour and has a beard, making him look like an old Indian sage rather than a Tibetan Buddhist monk. Nevertheless, from the top of this shrine, I could finally see Norbugang, which was on the other side. There was a big contingent of elderly lady monks making round of the statue. I think irrespective my confusion, it is an important Buddhist site in Sikkim. I tried to strike a conversation with one or two of them but we did not seem to share any common language. So, I left them there and started walking towards Norbugang.

Yuksom 2

The Norbugang is basically a chorten (stupa), which was the site of the coronation of Phuntsog Namgyal as the first Chogyal of Sikkim in 1642 AD. That dynasty ruled Sikkim for several centuries, till the point Sikkim merged with India in the 1970s. A park has been built surrounding the chorten and a few other shrines around it. There was a small shop run by a local woman in front of the park, who was also collecting entry fees of INR 10. We quickly paid the same and entered the park, which can also be called a mini botanical garden as there we many trees and all of them had boards identifying respective species. We soon realized that trees have always played a major part in the whole setup as the Chorten itself was located under a giant pine tree which, looking at the girth, can be assumed to be as old as the history of the town.

Yuksom 5

So, Phuntsong Namgyal was a descendant of a royal from Eastern Tibet. As per local legends, his ascent was foretold by Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) himself in the 9 th century. When the time came, a group of three Lamas went for a tour of Sikkim and eventually found and handpicked him for this role. He is believed to have established the first centralized administrative system in Sikkim and expanded the kingdom to parts of present day Darjeeling and Nepal. There is also a set of preserved footprints belonging to one of those three lamas from Norbugang, which is now a small structure where the white has turned greenish yellow. Nevertheless, symbolic importance of it in Sikkim and in the entire Tibetan sphere is unmistakeable.

Kathok: The Monastery by the Lake

Yuksom 12

After Norbugang, we quickly moved on to explore other places of Yuksom and soon found ourselves at Kathok Lake, which is a sacred lake as per the locals. This green lake is surrounded by dense vegetation and lined with white prayer flags. As per the legends, the water from this lake was used to wash the throne at the time of coronation. Later on, a monastery was built slightly higher up, apparently in the honour of another of the monks who conducted the coronation. In that sense, I think almost everything in this town is a tribute to that historic event and the people involved in the same. It was a small monastery, but with very distinctive red walls surrounded by beautiful bamboo groves. However, it was closed when we arrived and so we could not really have a look inside. It is a small monastery and is located at an elevation overlooking the whole town. Even as you approach Yuksom, it is generally the first thing that appears in the horizon.

Dubdi: Trek to The Hermit’s Cell

We had a hasty lunch at one of the roadside restaurants. We still had at least 2 hours remaining in that short winter day and we wanted to make the most of it. The last major attraction remaining in this place was Dubdi monastery that required a short hike, which seemed perfect for the time we had. We figured out the route after asking around a few people and finally found the route to the monastery, which was a small trail behind a government dispensary as well as a popular homestay. The trail initially passes through a patch of cardamom plantations. In that season, I think the harvesting was already over and the leaves had gradually turned reddish yellow from green, not that it bothered me. How often do you get to walk through a cardamom patch anyway?

Yuksom 17

Small hilly streams were flowing down from the top and they were powering what I call, for the lake of a better word, watermill chakras . These are usual Buddhist Dharma chakras that you get to see at any Buddhist site but at Yuksom they were designed as watermills and placed above the streams, so that the force of flowing water make them move automatically. After 15 minutes, we passed that stretch and the trail met a mud road. The cardamom trail ended and now we were in the forest covered by oaks, rhododendrons, and chestnuts. However, the hike did not last long and we reached the monastery in another 10 minutes.

Yuksom 16

Dubdi Monastery was established in 1701 AD by Chogyar Namgyal and is dedicated to Lhatsun Namkha Jigme, another of those three Lamas from Norbugang, as you might have guessed already. It is also called “The Hermit’s Cell”, referring to the ascetic nature of the Lama. It is located reasonably higher up from the town, at around 2,100 metres and is a much larger monastery built of stone, covering a reasonably vast area for a small town. Images of various lamas, other Buddhist symbols and collection of manuscripts and texts have been preserved in the monastery, along with the statues of those three lamas. The courtyard of the monastery was well-manicured and as we were relaxing out there soaking some sun, a Polish traveller conjured from the back of the monastey and advised us to check the areas beyond the monastery.

Yuksom 31

So, we left the monastery behind in order to explore the backyard and found a couple of trails going further. One of them was pointing towards Hongri Monastery, which is on the way to Tashiding, which is 25 KM’s from Yuksom by road. So, there was the shortcut route here taking you to Tashiding although there was no time left for us for such an adventure. As far as I could see, one will have to trek for at least 15 KMs to reach Hoingri and then Tashiding, which will take the whole day. I’m sure Yuksom had more hidden gems to offering this was the most we could accommodate on the last day of the trip. Still satisfied, we returned to our vehicle and moved back towards Pelling but not before we spotted a magnificent orchid bloom at one of the houses. I don’t know what species it was and that was not even the blooming season. But Yuksom is nothing if not surprising.

For the experience of a lifetime, travel to the wonderful area of clean secret lakes, vibrant flower, exotic wildlife, and unspoiled mountain peaks. The charming village of Uttarey serves as the starting point of the relatively new trail, which treks across the Singalila ridge to Goechala . Despite the trek's amazing splendor, few tourists travel there. In actuality, Sikkim yak herders make up the majority of those who trek the trail. Enjoy a feeling of solitude and peace in this wilderness-like atmosphere.

You are now traversing Chiwa Bhanjyang's high alpine meadows after a few days on the trek. Continue and cross two high alpine passes, each offering a unique viewpoint. Start your hike from Dzongri towards Goechala, another breathtaking Himalayan vista. Place yourself above the majority of others. You can only see locations that are higher than you. Views of MightyMt. Kanchenjunga (8586m), Mt. Talung (7349m), andMt. Kabru will be available (7353m). After there, descend to Yukom to complete your trek. Is a wonderful way to wrap out the adventure.

The Sikkim Singalila Uttarey Circuit Trek or the Indo Nepal Trek must be possible throughout the year.

However, spring (March to May) and another excellent season (September to November) are the ideal seasons.

The vibrant flowers bloom in the spring. Fall often brings better skies. The trek is fully managed by Glacier Treks and Adventure, including transportation, lunches, etc.

Therefore, feel free to ask any questions you may have if you are there in detail.

What is the most attractive and crucial for completing the Singalila Goechala Circuit or round Trek?

the splendour of this trail. World's third-highest mountain, Kanchenjunga, as seen from a great distance. Trek to Goechala to get as close to the massif as you can without touching it.

Panorama of peaks in Sikkim, Nepal, and Bhutan. Kanchenjunga, Kumbhakarna, Rathong, Koktang, South Kabru, North Kabru, Black Kabru, Jupono, Tenchenkhang, Pandim, Simvo, Goecha Peak, Forked Peak, etc.

Trek across the Himalayan rhododendron forest. Late March through early June is when rhododendrons blossom.

The fortunate individuals get the opportunity to see the endangered bird and animal species of the Singalila and Kanchenjunga National Parks.

One of the most pleasant experiences of the journey is climbing to the top of Goecha La 4800 metres high. However, the calm that the waves of Samiti Lake and the "tear-shaped" Goechala Lake offer is an experience that adds unequalled value to the trek.

You get up and move around when you see the sun rising and setting over the mountain peaks. Yes, remember to bring your cameras so you may record the golden peaks.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
