How to Get the Most Out of Your Visit to Stone Brewing

How to Get the Most Out of Your Visit to Stone Brewing

words: Beth Demmon

If size matters — and in beer, it does — Stone Brewing is a San Diego heavyweight.

One of over 150 breweries citywide , Stone has the largest craft brewery in Southern California, and ranks  among the 10 top-selling breweries nationwide . Stone has multiple locations across San Diego as well as in two other beer hotspots ( Richmond, Va., and Berlin, Germany), and an outpost  smack in the middle of Napa Valley wine country . There’s even a Stone Shanghai in the future.

Staunchly committed to “growing up without selling out” since launching in 1996, Stone has cultivated a fan base primarily of hardcore hopheads, thanks to its signature West Coast-style IPA . But with a wide variety of seasonal and special releases that range from ice cream-inspired collaborations to a decade-spanning vertical , Stone appeals to palates of all kinds (except those who seek fizzy yellow beer).

Anyone planning a craft beer pilgrimage would be remiss to skip Stone’s original location in Escondido , 30 miles north of downtown San Diego. There, the company has crafted more than a taproom. Stone’s World Bistro & Gardens is a colossal testament to San Diego beer and is a destination in itself. From a sprawling outdoor oasis, to the formidable steel-and-granite restaurant with three dozen draft lines and extensive bottle list, this is an impressive operation. (The beers don’t disappoint, either.)

Why It’s Famous

Originally started in San Marcos, Stone custom-built its current Escondido headquarters in 2006 (1999 Citracado Parkway). Just off Highway 78, a.k.a. San Diego’s “Hops Highway,” Stone’s facility has been the cornerstone of the burgeoning North County scene ever since.

Those familiar with the brewery are sure to recognize the scruffy, bearded face of Greg Koch, but he’s only one half of the founding team. Koch, along with Steve Wagner, created Stone over 20 years ago, long before San Diego became the beer mecca it is today.

Its flagship beer, Stone Pale Ale, was discontinued in 2015, but rabid fans requested (and received) the recipe in order to brew it at home. Many more hop-forward beers have taken its place, but favorites like the “Enjoy By” series encourage drinking fresh rather than cellaring.

Stone’s anti-establishment attitude led it to launch Arrogant Brewing (questioning every drinker’s worthiness to imbibe), release a politically charged “ImPeach IPA,” and even take on the big boys of corporate beer in a trademark lawsuit . Aggressively independent and aggressively hopped: That’s the Stone way.

What to Order

Considering Stone’s far-reaching distribution, especially for the beers it brews year-round, start your visit with one of the brewery’s seasonals or special releases, like the Pilot/Experimental series.

In town for Comic-Con? Any wOOtstout you can get is worth trying. Get a flight of whatever’s available to try concurrent years back-to-back. Stone also recently partnered with local favorites Societe Brewing Company to create “The Skedaddler” IPA, an aromatically resinous/tropical-tasting amalgamation of friendship.

Don’t skip the food menu, either. The Impossible Burger could fool even the staunchest carnivore, and the mac & cheese with pancetta is as good as it sounds.

What to Skip

Some of the brewery’s one-offs can get a little esoteric for the casual beer drinker, like the “Give Me Stout or Give Me Death” collaboration with Ardent Craft Ales of Richmond, Va., and former Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe. The “aggressively hopped imperial stout, jam-packed with Virginia raspberries and blackberries” gets a little bogged down with so many ingredients, but be sure to give the other Virginia-brewed beers a try.

Given NOFX frontman Fat Mike’s controversial comments , you can also safely skip the “Punk in Drublic” lager . It’s a shame — because it’s tasty — but not worth supporting. (Stone agrees; it pulled its sponsorship of the multi-city music and beer festival .) Try one of the guest lagers instead.

It’s always summertime in San Diego, so come anytime! Every November, San Diego goes even more beer-crazy than usual for San Diego Beer Week . With events galore all over the county, it’s a great time to experience the best of #SDbeer.

Every Thursday means live music as well, and tours of the brewing facility are available daily (but often fill up fast).

Where to Stay

Escondido doesn’t have the lodging options of more central San Diego areas, but the Lakehouse San Marcos is a frequent partner of the facility and close enough to ride-share. There are also plenty of hotel chains nearby, and we’re still holding out hope for the Stone hotel to become reality.

Those crestfallen at Stone’s landlocked location can head due west toward Carlsbad for beachside accommodations and, of course, plenty of craft beer .

Stone Brewing

Famous for bringing the world the likes of Arrogant Bastard Ale, Stone Brewing is nothing if not cheeky. This is, after all, the first American craft brewer bold enough to open an outpost in Germany , a country steeped in beer-making tradition. But Stone’s audacity is hardly unfounded, as you’ll discover when you visit the company’s headquarters in Escondido—ideally, for a private tour and tasting. If you’re not already a fan of San Diego ’s particularly hoppy style of IPAs, there will be at least one beer on tap that makes you a convert. But first, you’ll walk through the brew house—past mash kettles and whirlpools and fermenters—to learn all kinds of fun facts, whether it’s the surprise source of the chocolaty notes in Stone’s porters and stouts (mega-roasted malted barley) or what the upcycling options are for spent grains (cow feed and dog bones). Pro tip: After your tour, bypass the lovely indoor restaurant for the even lovelier outdoor gardens—all bamboo and koi ponds and hummingbirds. Sit back in an Adirondack chair with a beer (try one of the extra-innovative brews on offer only here) and warm pretzels with Stone Ripper Pale Ale beer cheese sauce.

More Recommendations

Stone brewing world bistro and gardens, one brewery to watch.

This April, Stone Brewing Co., San Diego’s largest craft brewery, will open a restaurant in a former navy mess hall. Guests can look forward to duck tacos dressed in Levitation Ale barbecue sauce as well as glasses of hoppy Arrogant Bastard Ale.

Down on the Farm ~ Urban Farming as Social Topography

The social benefits of urban agriculture are exemplified: empowerment & mobilization, youth development and education, food security, safe spaces, and intergenerational exchange. Stone Farm is simply one of a network of highly sustainable urban farms nurtured and harnessed to support N. San Diego County’s social landscape. So dedicated to using organic, sustainably farmed produce, Stone bought a farm to grow their own a few miles from the brewery and has it open to the public on weekends. Come on down, stroll the grounds while sipping a Stone beer brewed with farm ingredients, and hear Stone’s beloved blabbermouth, Ken Wright pontificate (about how he’s not really the model for Arrogant Bastard Ale). Be sure to check out the on-site store for bits and bobs of freshly picked organic produce. Beware the pickled beets ~ they are a tad sweet! Tours depart from the Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens - Escondido @ 1pm & return by 2:45pm. The tour involves an easy-paced 25 minute stroll, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Conditions are typically sunny & warm. A hat, sunscreen and loose, lightweight clothing are recommended. All ages are welcome. Guests must be 21 or older to enjoy beer at the farm. Be sure to visit on June 22nd for a special Grand Opening event. You’ll see fields brimming w/organic produce, hop vines, quail, chickens, and even peacocks! Carlsbad’s Red Oven Pizza will be available for a small donation & funds go to The Escondido Creek Conservancy.

Sip and Screen

Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens has bocce ball, craft brews, and 50,000 square feet of outdoor space—what more could you want on a blissful summer day? After dusk, settle in for a classic movie (Fight Club, Princess Bride) paired with pretzels, tuna poke tacos, and Stone IPA, a hoppy West Coast pale ale. This appeared in the June/July 2016 issue.

Exploring Carlsbad's Beer Scene with Scavengers Beer Adventures

Carlsbad is home to numerous craft breweries, many of which make innovative beers iconic of the west coast’s experimental style. The best way to explore this facet of the local culture is through a brewery tour with Scavengers Beer Adventures. You’ll visit the city’s best breweries and brew pubs while riding around in a six-wheel-drive all-terrain high-mobility army utility Pinzgauer. Additionally, your guide will show you some of Carlsbad’s most scenic spots.

California Through My Lens

Stone Brewing Co. Brewery Tour: Escondido, CA

One of my favorite places to visit, eat, and hang out in Southern California is at the Stone Brewing Co. in Escondido. This place is so much more than a brewery with its gardens, bistro, and tour of the brewery itself. Since I am such a fan of this place, I am breaking this post up into two separate entries, one on the Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens and this one on the tour of the brewery and how the beer is made. If you are in the area, go check it out yourself, you can get details here , if not read this blog, it’s a close second. Note that this post is from 2011 so some of the details may have changed.

Getting a Pass

When you arrive at the brewery, the first thing you need to do is check-in and get a pass. On weekends the passes tend to go fast, so make sure you are a lot earlier than when you plan to take the tour. When we got there at around 1 PM on a Sunday, we got the last two passes for the 2 o’clock tour, and the rest of the times, until 4 and 6, were already gone. The tickets are given out starting two hours before the tour time, and it seemed like they only had around 25 people on the tour if I had to guess. They are free and include four decent-sized tasters of their beer at the end. It is very popular, so arrive early and check-in right away.

stone brewing tours

Having been on a couple of different brewery tours, I knew what to expect; however, the guide we had was much more knowledgable then other breweries I had toured in the past. The tour started with a detailed presentation on the different ingredients and how the beer was made. It was pretty exciting to see the sheer size and amount of fermentors they had; you can tell that they take brewing serious at Stone Brewing Co.

stone brewing tours

Throughout the tour, they made quips about yellow fizzy beer, which was quite funny and they have a lot of merchandise in the store that plays off this as well. From there, they took us into the fermentor area and explained the process and time for the beer. It was interesting to see that they like to test new beers and create some unique concoctions such as a pumpkin ale that I stumbled upon at a local restaurant in Riverside.

stone brewing tours

Next, they took us to the bottling area, where they had stacks upon stacks of beer ready to go out as well as a system that seamlessly bottled the beer after it has been completed. This part was especially interesting because they gave a little history of the company and how much it has grown in its short life. Also, you were then free to ask any questions you had about the tour and the company before heading back to taste.

stone brewing tours

When the tour wrapped up, we headed back to the store to taste four of their most popular beers. I spoke with a couple of the people that run the tours, and all of them seem to have a vast knowledge of both the company and how the beer was made. It was a lot of fun, and I would highly recommend it, even if you don’t like beer. I always find these tours to be a unique part of what makes California what it is.

Behind the Scenes at San Diego Breweries

National and international award-winning beers.

Something amazing is brewing in San Diego. The region's craft breweries are turning out innovative beers that push the envelope and take top prizes at national and international competitions.

See Where the Magic Happens With a San Diego Brewery Tour

At the World Beer Cup, an event that only happens every two years, San Diego breweries consistently rank among the best. In the recent past, local standouts like Ballast Point Brewing Company and Coronado Brewing Company have been honored as champion brewers, and many other San Diego all-stars—both young and old—scored honors for individual brews, including AleSmith, Karl Strauss Brewing Company, and Port/Lost Abbey Brewing Company.

Sampling these award-winning brews is best done right at the source and, if you’re a beer lover who wants to really pull back the curtain and see where the magic happens, a brewery tour is a must-do. Sign on for one of these tours and go behind the scenes, meet the brewers, get a few tastes, and learn all about the process of making great beer, San Diego style.

Stone Brewing Company

With a boldly creative attitude to match their aggressively hopped beers, Stone Brewing Co. is recognized as one of the best breweries in the United States by the two largest beer enthusiast websites,  Ratebeer.com  and  BeerAdvocate.com . Producing more than 300,000 barrels annually, Stone is the 9th largest craft brewery in the nation and is among the pioneers that put San Diego beermaking on the map. "Hop" on a guided tour at Stone’s original craft beer mecca in Escondido and then enjoy a meal at the Stone Brewing World Bistro and Gardens, where the menu is full of options designed to pair with one of Stone’s outstanding beers. With 36 beers on tap and over 100 bottles from which to choose, plan to spend plenty of time enjoying this unique experience.

Stone Brewing World Bistro and Gardens – Liberty Station offers the option to get the Stone experience a little closer to downtown. Located in the Point Loma area of San Diego, this 50,000 square foot restaurant and bar serves up 40 beers on tap, including small batches brewed on site. A large, comfortable beer garden and bocce courts are only two of the special features that make this Stone facility a unique venue. Additional tasting rooms and Stone company stores (with fill stations) are located throughout the county.

Ballast Point

At Ballast Point, the brewers are experts at capturing the signature hoppy San Diego flavor profile. Among their many iconic beers are world-famous Sculpin IPA (Gold medal at World Beer Cup 2010) and Grapefruit Sculpin, in addition to Grunion, Even Keel, and their newest double IPA, Manta Ray.

Take a behind the barrels tour at Ballast Point's  flagship restaurant and brewery in Miramar , or enjoy a pint at the brewing facility in Scripps Ranch , the restaurant and R&D headquarters in Little Italy  or the original brewing location in Linda Vista which also houses Homebrew Mart , one of San Diego’s best homebrew supply shops. There, you can see where the Ballast Point story all began and pick up some supplies while you’re at it (and sample some tasters too!).

AleSmith Brewery Company

AleSmith used to be tucked into an unassuming Miramar storefront, but now it inhabits one of the largest production spaces (and the largest tasting room) in San Diego. The company’s meteoric growth in recent years can be attributed to the dedication and vision of owner Peter Zien, a tireless beer perfectionist and San Diego's only "Grand Master" Level One Beer Judge.

Since he began brewing in 1995, Zien's beers have earned over 400 medals and honors including “Small Brewing Company of the Year” at the Great American Beer Festival, the nation’s premier gathering of craft brewers. Many of AleSmith’s beers have been rated “perfect” or nearly perfect on Ratebeer.com (Speedway Stout has consistently rated 100 points) and the brewery’s reputation for bold flavors and high quality are legendary in the industry.

Tours of the massive new brew house and production facility are available on a regular basis at the brewery, and while you’re there be sure to check out the Tony Gwynn Museum, which houses an exclusive collection of Mr. Padre’s personal and professional memorabilia and baseball artifacts.

Karl Strauss Brewing Company

Karl Strauss is commonly credited with igniting the local craft beer movement when it first began brewing on Columbia Street downtown in 1989. As the first post-Prohibition brewery to reintroduce San Diego to locally brewed, handcrafted beer, Karl Strauss’s beers set a new standard for San Diego and the craft beer industry at large. Nearly 30 years later, Karl Strauss Brewery restaurants can be found all around Southern California, where they offer a beer-centric menu of great pub food paired with their many award-winning brews.

Karl Strauss Brewing Company was honored by the Great American Beer Festival in 2016 as the Mid-Sized Brewer and the Mid-Sized Brewing Company of the Year.

Green Flash Brewing Co.

Soon after they first began, Green Flash became the iconic brewery of San Diego’s most aggressively hopped beers, most notably West Coast IPA and then Palate Wrecker. Today, they retain a loyal following of die-hard hop-heads, but also have many fans of their others styles, such as Belgian-styles, lagers and stouts.

These are just a few of the breweries that offer tours in San Diego. For more, browse San Diego's 100+ Craft Breweries  to schedule a Brew Tour.

12 breweries to visit at the Delaware beaches — or on the way

stone brewing tours

The Southern Delaware beaches are the birthplace of modern craft brewing in Delaware, ever since Dogfish Head's Sam Calagione decided to open a little brewpub serving chicory stout and maple-vanilla ale.

The zone surrounding the state's southern beaches remains true to these roots, a suds-dense area with more than a dozen brewpubs within a half hour's drive of each other, some of which named among the best in the mid-Atlantic and the country.

But with so many to choose from, the options can be dizzying (especially if you drink all of them.) So here's a little guide to the breweries and brewpubs of Delaware's Southern beaches, from Lewes to Rehoboth to Dewey to the Inland Bays to a little river town en route to the beach.

Delaware breweries in and around Lewes

Big oyster brewery.

1007 Kings Hwy. Lewes, 302-644-2621, bigoysterbrewery.com .

Big Oyster’s original location is the kind of rambling beer hall you always hope you’ll find near a beach: a rural-styled barn of a place with steamer clams and oysters, a bar made from a solid hardwood slab, a wooden stage out back for local bands, and a sizable playset for the kiddies.

Big Oyster offers newfangled hazies and Willie Wonka sours, but our favorites are the classics. Oyster makes remarkably crisp lagers free of flaws — in particular a lovely and biscuity Helles — and their flagship Hammerhead is the sort of bright, modern, generously dry-hopped pine-citrus IPA you rarely see on this coast.

A second Big Oyster outpost, at the new Southern Delaware Golf Club outside Milford, is also due for summer 2024.

Crooked Hammock

36707 Crooked Hammock Way, Lewes, 302-644-7837, crookedhammockbrewery.com .

Crooked Hammock is a brewpub with the approximate personality of a Jimmy Buffett concert: a fun-themed Southern-beachy backyard of a place with rainbowed adirondacks and ping-pong and an actual hammock we’re not sure is crooked.

The beers you should order also are the ones themed for "fun." This could be a pineapple-fruity Jungle Juice sour that tastes more sweet than sour. Or it could be a “Joint Collaboration IPA,” infused with cannabis aromatics, which smells like a lit bong but tastes mostly mild.

Especially, it should be the Hammock Light.

The Hammock Light, a crystal-clear beach lager if there ever was one, is the most basic and frictionless beer you can expect to find in this world: It is low calorie, low hop, low gluten, low alcohol and low effort. It’s what you’d drink in a parking lot or while thinking about mowing a lawn, the flavor of a life lived without care. A life led, we presume, mostly on a hammock.

Dog Pirate Beer Co.

32191 Nassau Road, Nassau, 302-644-2850, facebook.com/dogpiratebeer.

A stone’s throw from Delaware’s oldest winery, Nassau Valley Vineyard, stands one of its newest breweries.

Since August 2023, in a wee tasting room at the back of quaint barn of a building also home to a bakery, Dog Pirate Beer Co. offers European-inspired, mostly malt-forward ales that offer a respite for those weary of the single-minded hops obsessions of much modern craft brewing.

And so a recent malty-sweet tripel is filled with the banana and dark-fruit aromas of Belgian yeasts. A German-inspired Kolsch — trapped somewhere between lager and ale — starts clean and ends with the lightly mineral notes one expects from the style.

But if the beer is mostly traditional, the space is a bit of a hybrid. Owner and brewer Greg Christmas founded Dog Pirate last ye ar in the same tasting room as his other business, Beach Time Distilling . This makes for a heartening truce among drinkers of different flavors. Come as a couple, and one can sample fruit-flavored rums (including Beach Plum ) or a promising 3-year bourbon, while the other chooses to sip saisons and stouts.

Or, theoretically, both of you can drink both. But be warned: This could lead to the life of a pirate.

Breweries in Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach

Dewey beer co..

2100 Coastal Hwy, Dewey Beach, 302-227-1182 ; 21241 Iron Throne Drive, Milton, 302-329-9759; deweybeerco.com

The original Dewey Beer Co. taproom feels like any old beach bar for surfers and kooks, and that’s pretty much the point.

Just feet from sand and shore — along a street filled with head shops and beachy hotels — you can get your hands messy with hot wings and peel-and-eat shrimp, watch neverending surf videos on a pair of flat screens by the bar, and buy more merch than you’d find at a stadium tour.

But it’s not just any old beach bar. Dewey Beer is also home, perhaps, to Delaware’s most accomplished scientists of hops. More than half the entries on its long beer list are big, fruity, juicy, hazy IPAs with silly names and even sillier volumes of dry hopping. A pineapple-yellow Futuristic Future, on a recent visit, tasted like every fruit Carmen Miranda ever wore on her head, from pineapple to orange to guava.

In some ways, the IPAs may even taste fruitier than the rotating array of Secret Machine fruit beers that dominate much of the rest of the menu — though those fruit flavors in the IPAs come only from the hops themselves.

It’s likely this combination — a locals bar with world-class hazy IPA — that drove USA Today’s 10Best to name Dewey Beer the best taproom in the country in 2024. It’s hard to wander within 20 miles of the place without the urge to stop by.

A bit inland, the production taproom in Harbeson is just a few miles from the Milton production brewery of Dogfish Head, if you want to be closer to the source. You also can visit Dewey's new brewery taproom in in Denver, Colorado , if you wish

Dogfish Head Brewery

Brewing and Eats, EmPOURium and Chesapeake and Maine, 316-20 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach, 302-226-3600; Dogfish brewery, 6 Village Center Blvd., Milton, 302- 684-1000, dogfishhead.com .

Delaware’s oldest, biggest and most famous craft brewery is still worth a check-in even for locals. For out of towners, it’s a rite of passage.

Dogfish Head's food and beer complex in Rehoboth Beach is like a little Epcot Center for beer and spirits: a choose-your-mood tour of bottle shop, brewpub and seafood bar.

If you arrive hungry or at happy hour, our favorite of Dogfish Head's taproom options is Chesapeake and Maine, for its namesake mix of local and Maine oysters — really one of the only places to slurp actual Delaware oysters — alongside ale-soaked mussels and steamed littleneck clams.

Pair your shells with a seasonal or rotator Dogfish Head beer you can’t find anywhere but here, and you’ve officially had the Delaware beer experience that people from Florida or California are sure to ask about. Add in a stay at the Dogfish Inn in Lewes and a tour of the production brewery in Milton to boot, and you’re probably taking it all too far. But in this part of Delaware, the world is your Dogfish.

Iron Hill Brewing

19815 Coastal Hwy., Rehoboth Beach, 302-260-8000, ironhillbrewery.com .

Iron Hill, a Delaware-founded brewery just a hair younger than Dogfish Head, is the kind of place you could easily take for granted. It’s a multi-state chain, for one. Each location looks pretty similar to the other ones, whether in Delaware or elsewhere.

But take a look at the wall, at the vast array of national beer awards earned over Iron’s nearly three decades, and you’ll see a different story. Stick to the stouts and lagers especially, or to the clean and crisp and clear hoppy pales, and you’ll find a brewery well in control of its craft.

Beer & produce: New weekly market set to open at Georgetown Revelation Brewing in May. What to know

It’s not for nothing you see Iron Hill on the resume so many excellent brewers around the region: Jean Broillet IV at Philly's Tired Hands brewed at Iron for years. So did brewer Bob Barrar, who can’t stop winning national gold medals for his Russian Imperial stout at 2SP. Same goes for Larry Horwitz, who inaugurated Crooked Hammock’s excellent Hammock Light lager.

Anyway, the Iron Hill at the Tanger Outlets in Rehoboth Beach is not very beachy. Nor is it overly different from the Iron Hill up the road aways in Wilmington, or in Newark. Nor at any number of locations in Pennsylvania or New Jersey. Consider this an acknowledgement that consistency like this is quite difficult to achieve.

Revelation Craft Brewing

19841 Central St., Rehoboth Beach, 302-212-5674’ 413 S Bedford St., Georgetown, 302-515-1100; revbeer.com .

Revelation Brewing is perhaps undersung, as home to some of the tastiest beer in Delaware. But to beachy locals, hardly a secret.

Its original Rehoboth Beach taproom is humble and out of the way, a backroad bar with chalkboard beer list that feels made for the neighborhood. A little shack out front serves wood-fired pizza, and its beertenders justly have been voted some of the friendliest in the state.

But its beers, likewise justly, have won national awards year after year. Mostly, this stems from Revelation’s deftness with sour beers conditioned on unholy amounts of fresh raspberry or apricot or blackberry: beers that are balanced, light and beauteously expressive of fruit. But don’t sleep on a clean and crisp Pilsner, nor a brown ale accented with on woody notes from Caribbean Mama Juana wood.

As of last year, Revelation also has expanded to a Georgetown brewery and taproom far from the beach, but conveniently located at a cross-section of highways for those coming in from parts south or west.

Thompson Island Brewing

0133 Veterans Way, Rehoboth Beach, 302-226-4677, thompsonislandbrewing.com

Thompson Island is the original beer outpost of Rehoboth Beach’s omnipresent SoDel Concepts , the restaurant group behind well over a dozen restaurants and bars and breweries along the Delaware coastline.

Thompson's better-than-usual taproom food menu shows evidence of this, from stacked smashburgers to seafood to locally famous wings. So does the minimalist white-on-white cottagecore of the restaurant’s interior, whose self-consciously rough-hewn furniture looks a little like its painters left early for the day.

But if you’re here, you’re almost certainly here for the indoor-outdoor back bar, the spacious firepit patio with multiple cornhole courts, and an array of beers from a spot-on Baltic porter to No Bad Days lager that starts dry and ends with a strong noble-hop finish. Hopheads should always spend a glass with a truly excellent piney-citrusy, malt-balanced Thompson Island IPA.

Some far-flung beer flavor experiments, like a maple pancake sour, might reward caution. But,a mixed-culture Brett saison, a style known for barnyard funk, scored national medals in 2024 at both of the biggest craft beer competitions in American beer.

Southern Delaware breweries: Inland Bays and further Inland

Bethany brewing.

38450 Hickman Road, Ocean View, 302-616-2691, bethanybrewing.net .

Bethany Brewing is perhaps the closest any Delaware beach brewery comes to being a secret. Tucked away at the back end of an inland Ocean View parking lot next to a seafood store and a restaurant called Munchies, Bethany is unknown to some who live mere miles away.

The beers feel a bit like homebrews, rough-hewn and malty. The best are those where that’s a virtue, in particular a coffee-forward Rick’s Brown Ale named after the owner who came up with the recipe. The bartender on our visit favored instead the porter and the stout.

But really, a visit to Bethany Brewing feels like traveling back to a time before beer hype existed. It is a bare-bones and somewhat sleepy place, more locals-only than any beachside surf bar that might claim the same. It’s the sort of daytime haunt you often hope to find while far from home: a place full of regulars and a life that exists only here, in this becalmed backchannel of the Inland Bays.

Ocean View Brewing

85 Atlantic Ave., Ocean View, 302-829-1530, oceanviewbrewingde.com .

Ocean View is, of course, Thompson Island’s other half — the other brewery from the Delaware beaches’ ubiquitous SoDel Concepts.

It’s not the same brewery as Thompson Island. And it’s not quite the same menu either. But it’s not not the same, either. The two share a brewmaster, and some of Thompson Island’s brews tend to show up at Ocean View. Some of Ocean View’s brews also show up at Thompson Island.

That said, the mood is much different at inland Ocean View: There’s a calmer, family-friendly vibe. Fewer cornhole courts, and more street-corn nachos. The namesake beers are different, as well. Where Thompson’s namesake IPA is an old school, balanced West Coaster, the Ocean View IPA is a light, low-bitterness, low-friction hazy.

As at Thompson Island, your best move is to skip the novelty beers and order the classics. On a recent visit, our favorite beer by far was an unassuming English mild: It tasted, wonderfully, like a chocolate-covered toffee without the sweetness.

Brick Works Brewing and Eats

36932 Silicato Dr., Long Neck, 302-287-0077; 30 S Dupont Blvd, Smyrna, 302-508-2523, brickworksde.com

Brick Works, founded in Smyrna in 2016, wandered down to beer-starved Long Neck three years later to open a similar burger-filled brewpub at the western edge of the Inland Bays.

Brick Works is named after an old brick factory in Smyrna. But the vibe at both locations is more like mini-mall sports pub, filled with TV screens and ballcaps and burgers. The beer is mostly straight down the middle of the plate, but there are a few curve balls.

The brewer at the Long Neck location might discover a sudden fondness for new-fangled Medusa hops one week, as we found on a recent visit. Medusa, if you're unfamiliar, is a “Neo-Mexican” hop variety that imparted wild guava and melon flavors to a recent lager and IPA. Both were worthwhile experiments.

A stout from the Smyna location might offer the sugar and cinnamon of a shopping mall Cinnabon, while one from Long Neck serves up the vanilla and white-chocolate notes of an Otis Spunkmeyer cookie.

Beer-spotters take note: While Brick Works is currently the only brewery within 10 miles of Millsboro, SoDel Concepts (Thomspon, Ocean View) told Delaware Online/The News Journal in 2023 that they were eyeing the city for a third brewery location. So the neighborhood might get a little more crowded.

Mispillion River Brewing

255 Mullett Run St., Milford, 302-491-6623, mispillionriverbrewing.com

All right: So Milford’s hardly a beach town. But for the northern half of Delaware, it's en route to and from the beaches. And so it’s also worth including here as a possible detour. Besides, the gravel of the patio at Mispillion River Brewing could be considered a river town's version of a beach.

Changes on the Riverfront: Why this will be the last year for Constitution Yards beer garden as you know it

Besides, the taproom at the decade-old brewery is an experience worth having. The room is a nest of weirdo knick-knacks from Imperial TIE fighters to wall-mounted dinosaur heads spouting expletives, and the customers might be equally lively with local gossip and goofball jokes. This is true perhaps especially if the brewer wanders out from his station, visible through glass from the little bar.

Mispillion brews an unpredictable variety of new beers each year, and the names are often also unpredictable. Standbys include an IPA named Not Today Satan, and another named Reach Around. That said, the IPAs themselves often are no-nonsense: malt-balanced, classically bitter-hopped beers of the sort they used to make on the West Coast.

Summer is for music festivals and the best way to celebrate tunes and sunshine is at a new resort in the Riviera Maya. Located along Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, Margaritaville Island Reserve Riviera Maya opened last June and is the place to be for an adults-only vacation with endless island vibes. The resort, inspired by the lyrics and lifestyle of singer, songwriter, and bestselling author Jimmy Buffett, is beautifully decorated with quotes, photos, and artwork. There are murals of colorful parrots around the property and cheerful and laid-back Buffett fans are fondly known as “parrot heads”.

Margaritaville Island Reserve provides a vibrant, world-class experience with gorgeous coastal designs, top-quality food and beverages including a brewery , entertainment, a luxurious spa, and exceptional service.

Dining concepts are inspired by Buffett’s lyrics and restaurants provide carefully-curated cuisine featuring a la carte items and colorful food displays. Food quality is next-level delicious and Margaritaville caters to dietary preferences and allergies upon request, we were thrilled with the amount of plant-based options. There are five Margaritaville-inspired restaurants including a beachside grill, License To Chill, where we dined under the sun at tables in shallow water. After discovering tasty and authentic jackfruit tostadas we went back daily.

Margaritaville Island Reserve Riviera Maya; Frank & Lola’s Italian Trattoria

Frank & Lola’s Italian Trattoria, named after Buffett’s song, has a wood-burning pizza oven for authentic pies, pasta, and fresh salads, all set against a décor of colorful clocks, plants, and artwork. The Landshark Brewery & Grill is the place to be for an evening of live entertainment and tasty grilled food. It’s also Mexico’s first beachfront brewery with guided tours and live brewing demonstrations.

Salted Rim is a margarita bar and lounge serving specially crafted drinks in the main lobby. Talented mixologists display innovative bartending skills worthy of photos. Meanwhile, it’s always Five O’clock Somewhere, a bar with world-famous margaritas based on Buffett’s popular song.

Chill At St. Somewhere Spa

You will literally chill at St. Somewhere Spa. All you need to do is pull down the chain that activates an entire bucket of ice-cold water being dumped on you. I wasn’t brave enough but my son pulled down the refreshing bucket twice. It’s part of their hydrotherapy circuit that’s dedicated to overall wellbeing and includes hot and cold pools, herbal steam room, dry sauna, sensory pool, polar lagoon, and chromotherapy shower. The ritual is designed to awaken your senses, strengthen circulation, soothe nerves, and improve digestion. Custom-designed body treatments are available and the Wellness Ritual was exactly what I needed to chill, without the icy bucket. Other treatments include a deep ocean massage, hot stone therapy, invigorating body scrub, and refresher facial. After your treatment relax with a book in the quiet area sipping herbal tea or work out at Fins Up! Fitness Center.

Dance, Sing, And Play

Summer of Music is in full swing for the next three months and includes live Latin rock, interactive jam sessions, Caribbean beach parties, and captivating Mariachi shows. It’s a global celebration of music and a fond reminder that music is the essence of Buffett’s Margaritaville. Even when Summer of Music ends, live music is never far away. There are pool parties with local bands and DJs, and live musical performances from solo singers to full bands playing classics and current favorites.

Rotating resort activities include movie trivia, aqua fit, volleyball, bingo, cornhole games, salsa cooking lessons, and a game of pickleball on one of their two courts. Don’t miss the Margarita Madness Foam Party in the pool, even if it’s watching from the sidelines. When the sun goes down, head to karaoke night, a piano session, DJ party, Caribbean night, or a lively rock n’ roll band at Landshark Bar.

Get Back To Nature

Taakk Bi Ha Cenote, Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

Buffett participated in charity concerts after hurricanes and supported environmental causes to protect marine species and conserve the ocean. In 1981 Buffett and a former US Senator formed Save The Manatee Club , an award-winning national nonprofit to protect manatees and their aquatic habitat for future generations.

We wanted to explore the natural side of Riviera Maya and booked the Cenote Paradise Lagoon tour with Lomas Travel . Cenotes have porous limestone soil and when that collapses from river currents and rainwater over time it leads to the formation of cenotes. We swam as a group through clear icy water in darkness except for the light of our guide’s flashlight. Cenotes are named after the Yucatec Maya word “D’zonot” — a place with underground water, and there are over 6,000 cenotes in the Yucatán Peninsula.

Yal-Ku Lagoon, snorkeling destination near Playa Del Carmen,Quintana Roo,Mexico

Next stop was Yal-Kú Lagoon, near Akumal Beach, a stunning tropical oasis hidden among the lush Mayan jungle. The freshwater lagoon is connected to the Caribbean Sea, creating a thriving ecosystem of marine life, fish, and coral. We swam past colorful fish through a breathtaking underwater world learning about creatures of the sea in their own natural paradise.

Jimmy Buffett would approve.

The Success of ‘Fancy Like’ Challenged Walker Hayes’ Sobriety. His New Project Celebrates It

  • By Tim Chan

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Rolling Stone may receive an affiliate commission.

Country singer Walker Hayes was six years into his sobriety journey when he scored a surprise number-one hit, instantly giving him the biggest platform of his career, while also propping him up on the biggest stage to fall from.

That surprise hit was “ Fancy Like, ” Hayes’ humdinger of a single that touted the joys of a “Bourbon Street steak” at Applebee’s over a snappy beat and sing-along chorus. Buoyed by a viral TikTok dance and even a remix with Kesha, the single went platinum (for sales of more than one million units) and hit number one on the Billboard country charts. But three years later, Hayes says the resulting whirlwind of “Fancy” was anything but.

“It was the greatest thing that ever happened in my career,” he tells Rolling Ston e, “but it was one of the biggest storms in my life too, because I didn’t know how to process it.”

Hayes is sipping a green smoothie in the lobby of a trendy West Hollywood hotel, miles removed from his modest home in Mobile, Alabama where he lives with his wife and six kids. The country star is in town to promote his new collaboration with Athletic Brewing Company, the country’s largest non-alcoholic beer brand, who’s just tapped Hayes for a new American Pale Ale, appropriately called “Fancy Like.”

The partnership stemmed from a genuine love for the brand, Hayes explains, but also a desire to create something fans could feel good drinking at his shows, especially if they were laying off the alcohol . While Hayes calls himself “a sweet tea guy,” the singer admits he was tired of not having any options at bars and restaurants aside from iced tea, club soda, or Diet Coke, which made his stomach hurt.

The newly-christened Athletic Brewing Co. “Chief Fancy Officer” (CFO) describes his new beer as a “great, classic pilsner” and compares it in taste and feeling to Miller High Life. “It’s just fun and laidback,” he says, adding that “Fancy Like” was “just the perfect name for it.”

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

Hayes says he started drinking at 13, though he can’t recall a particular reason or moment that drove him to drink. What he does remember, is watching home videos with his wife and kids one night eight years ago and not recognizing the person he saw on the screen. “It hurt man,” he says, “because I was looking at a picture of me and my son, and my eyes are glazed over.”

“I was smiling,” he continues, “but I just wasn’t there.”

That moment, Hayes says, “awakened a guilt in him,” which led to him finally putting down the bottle at the age of 36, ending this “crazy battle” within himself once and for all — or so he thought.

In 2020, Hayes began filming himself making TikTok videos with his family, partly as a way to kill time during Covid and also as a way to promote his album, Country Stuff . One of the videos, which featured the singer dancing with his daughter to “Fancy Like,” quickly went viral, propelling both Hayes — and his song — suddenly into the spotlight.

While Hayes — who had struggled for years as a singer and songwriter in Nashville — had seemingly found his big break, he says the success of “Fancy Like” came amidst a turbulent period in his life.

“I have a daughter we lost three years prior, who was stillborn,” he explains. “And my dad died six weeks before we put ‘Fancy Like’ out. And then ‘Fancy Like’ was just this large stone that splashed into the lake of our life, and the ripple effect, honestly, was like nothing short of tragic.”

Hayes went from playing UNO in his pajamas with his kids during Covid, to being on the road and doing promo in a different town each night. Most nights, he’d fall asleep alone, miles away from his family and friends. And then there were the sudden flashes of fame, which the small-town guy from Alabama had never had to navigate in his life.

“All of a sudden, you take this dad who’s very comfortable at home just writing songs and you put him in a suit, and you do his hair, and he’s walking red carpets with Machine Gun Kelly, and Cardi B’s introducing him? Yeah,” Hayes admits, “there were times where I was like, ‘I would love to be hammered right now; I’d much rather be drunk at this award show because I am uncomfortable.”

“I’m not gonna lie,” he shares, “but there were many nights where I called my wife and I said, ‘Look, there’s a bar down at the hotel, there’s nobody there, and nobody would know.’ There were many nights,” Hayes says, “where I counted on my wife and friends to talk me through and say, ‘You will not regret it if you don’t have that drink. You will not regret it if you wake up tomorrow and don’t have that secret to keep.'”

Hayes seems a little uncomfortable sharing that anecdote. But he has no regrets.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Walker Hayes (@walkerhayes)

Country music has always been synonymous with drinking. Some of the most popular country songs of all time revolve around beer or whiskey, or some combination of the two. Hayes admits that he still “loves a good drinking song,” but the singer hopes his story — and music — can inspire fans to think beyond the bar.

“There’s beer or whiskey in every single country song, and it’s almost like the furniture that goes in the house of a country song,” Hayes says. “And I think my role, or my calling, if you will, is to just be sober out loud, at least in our genre of music.”

“I don’t want to judge people,” he continues, “but I’m gonna have ‘Fancy Like’ [non-alcoholic beer] at all my venues, and I’m gonna promote it and say, ‘Hey, do you need this? It’s an option. I want to expose you to it. And it’s okay.'”

Hayes’ favorite song on his new album is called “Same Drunk.” It’s about how we all struggle with something, he explains, whether it’s alcoholism, substance abuse, or just “hitting the gym every day and realizing you’ll never be jacked enough. At some point,” he offers, “whatever you’re leaning on is going to let you down.”

Another song on Sober Thoughts is called “Beer in the Fridge,” inspired by the single remaining beer Hayes had in his refrigerator when he decided to quit drinking. “I would see it every day and shut the door,” he says, “and that was a victory for me.”

Why didn’t he just toss it out?

“I don’t know,” he admits. “I guess back then, I was playing a dangerous game and felt like, ‘Temptation tastes good.'” He shrugs and shakes his head in seeming disbelief.

Hayes is quick to acknowledge that launching a new beer brand — even a non-alcoholic one — could be a form of temptation as well. Does he want to walk so close to the fire?

“It’s not a trigger for me to drink a non-alcoholic beer,” he says reassuringly. “I don’t drink one and go, ‘Oh, this makes me really want to drink a real beer . I just like the taste of beer. And I like the activities that beer goes with, like baseball, golf, boating, bonfires, friends, family.”

The results are in: kendrick lamar won the great rap war, why grown-ass women love the idea of 'the idea of you', steve albini, noise rock pioneer and 'in utero' engineer, dead at 61.

“I’m really vocal about my story, my struggle and my redemption from alcoholism,” Hayes says, “and I just want to give people hope, especially in my line of work, where it just kind of coincides with drinking.”

“I don’t want people to be in dark places alone,” he continues, “because I know when I’m in those places, life is sad. And when you’re doing something in the dark that you know isn’t good, it’s killing you. And I don’t want people to feel that way. That’s really why I still make music,” Hayes offers. “Just to say, ‘Hey, out there. Are you okay? Are you good? Me too.'”
