A Brief History of Ghent

Ghent day trip itinerary - Things to See-in Ghent in One Day Itinerary - St Michaels Bridge Sint-Michielsbrug

In fact, most historians believe that Ghent’s historical name, ‘Ganda’, derives from the Celtic word ganda which means confluence.

During the Middle Ages from 1000 to around 1550, Ghent was one of the richest and most important cities in Europe. Bigger than London, Ghent was once considered the second largest city north of the Alps, second only to Paris.

As you walk around the city center, you’ll see the impact of the city’s rich past evidenced by the decorative and imposing architecture of its churches and the houses of rich traders.

Today, the center of Ghent is car-free which gives it a peaceful calm and a welcome getaway from the bustling capital.

Nowhere else will you find so much history per square metre than in the historical heart of Ghent.

Ghent, Gent, or Gand?

As you plan your trip to Ghent, you will come across conflicting spelling of the city.

First of all, Ghent, Gent, and Gand all refer to the same place. Since Belgium is a country of three spoken languages,   Dutch ( Flemish ), French, and English, it’s good to know who uses what to refer to the city.

If you haven’t already guessed it, Ghent is the English spelling (pronounced ‘gehnt’), Gand is French, and Gent is the Dutch (Flemish) spelling.

Want to know where you’ll be going? Take a look at the detailed map below.

3. Castle of the Count (Gravensteen)

Ghent day trip itinerary - Things to See-in Ghent in One Day Itinerary - Castle of the Count Gravensteen

The castle served as the seat of the Counts of Flanders until it was later abandoned in the 14th century. In Dutch, Gravensteen literally means “Castle of the count”.

Being the only remaining medieval castle with a moat and largely intact defence system located in the Flanders region of Belgium, the Gravensteen is a must visit.

During its lifetime, the castle was once a courthouse and a prison before it was abandoned at which point houses were built alongside its walls and in the courtyard. Stones were taken from the walls and reused to erect other buildings.

In the late 18th century, the Gravensteen was sold to private owners who converted it into a factory complex including a cotton mill. When its workers left, the Gravensteen fell into a state of complete disrepair and was ready for demolition.

Today, the Gravensteen is Ghent’s most important tourist attraction. Inside you can visit the Arms Museum and the Museum of Judicial Objects where you’ll find various weapons and torture devices on display dating back to medieval times. Don’t miss the guillotine and Mask of Shame.

Before you leave, go up to the rooftop for stunning panoramic views over Ghent. From here you’ll get a unique view of the three Medieval Towers of Ghent which include the Belfry of Ghent, Saint Bavo Cathedral and Saint Nicholas’ Church.

6. Vrijdagmarkt

Ghent day trip itinerary - Things to See in Ghent in One Day Itinerary - Little-Tower in Vrijdagmarkt

Vrijdagmarkt holds an important place in Ghent’s history as it was where royalty were officially received at ceremonies known as Joyous Entries. Publica also took place here.

Located in the square is the fifteenth-century Toreken, or ‘Little Tower’. Once the house of the tanners’ guild, it is the only original building to have survived from that era, all the others were built later in the 19th century.

Still today, Vrijdagmarkt is popular with locals and visitors who come to the market which is still held on Fridays mornings and also on Saturday afternoons.

While you’re here, stop by De Dulle Griet , home to 350 Belgian beers and the largest collection of Belgian beers in Ghent. Bottoms up!

7. St. Bavo’s Cathedral (Sint-Baafskathedraal)

Ghent day trip itinerary - Things to See-in Ghent in One Day Itinerary - St Bavo Cathedral

When Ghent became a rich and powerful city in the Middle Ages, an even larger and more impressive church was commissioned and became the imposing Gothic St Bavo’s Cathedral you see today. It was during this time that Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, was baptised here.

A major drawcard to the cathedral is seeing one of the most influential paintings ever made, The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb. This 18-panel masterpiece was painted by the Van Eyck brothers in the 15th century.

Price : Adults (including audio guide) €4 Opening Hours: Mon – Sat: 8:30 – 18:00, Sun: 13:00 – 18:00

The abbey was at its peak in the 11th century growing into a complex that today is home to the oldest standing wall in Ghent. Unfortunately, after the Revolt of Ghent in 1539, Emperor Charles V ordered the destruction of the abbey by cannons in 1540. It’s miracle that any of it is still standing.

Today, you can wander around the original Romanesque church marked with green shrubs. Due to the fragility of the site and to protect what remains, St Bavo’s Abbey is only open to visitors for a few hours each week.

In 1402, the Ghent Belfry housed the city privileges (aka laws and rights) in a chest locked up in the Belfry safe.

The Ghent Belfry took over from St Nicholas’ Church as the main watchtower. Up until 1869, watchmen would use the tower to keep an eye out for any dangers, (fire, in particular) that may threaten the city.

Where is Ghent?

Ghent is located in the northeast region of Flanders, Belgium, just 58 kilometres (36 miles) from Brussels.

How long does it take to Ghent?

It is super easy to reach both Ghent and Bruges from Brussels. In fact, the same train will take you to both! The best way to get to Ghent from either Brussels, Bruges, and Antwerp is by taking the Belgian Rail.

From Brussels: 35 minutes from Bruxelles-Midi Station. Price : Adult €9.20 one way From Bruges: 25 minutes from Brugge Station.  Price : Adult €6.80 one way From Antwerp: 1 hour from Antwerpen-Centraal Station.  Price : Adult €9.90 one way

You can either buy your tickets online in advance on the Belgian Rail website or buy them at the train station. There might be a queue at the ticket office so allow extra time for a potential wait.

The center of Ghent is quite small and pedestrianised which makes it easy for getting around on foot.

The main station (Gent Sint-Pieters) is about a half hour walk from the centre and not very scenic. If you don’t fancy the walk in, take tram no. 1 located right outside the station and get off at Gent Korenmarkt perron 5. The journey only takes 15 minutes.

Nestled in the heart of Flemish-speaking Belgium,  Ghent is a gorgeous city with a rich historical heritage alongside a quirky, modern spirit. Ghent has been overshadowed in recent years by its more popular Belgian counterparts like Antwerp and Bruges.

Ghent is a hidden gem of Europe waiting to be discovered. Ghent has some of the most beautiful Cathedrals in Europe and makes a perfect day trip for those  staying in Brussels  – so here is what to do on a day trip spending one day in Ghent!

Discovering Ghent in One Day

A mineret-like tower and glass awning in front of the brick train station in Ghent, Belgium

Ghent is very easy to get to from Brussels. It’s a great idea to stay in Brussels to be able to make wonderful day trips to areas like Bruges and Antwerp, which you can easily visit in one day!

Unlike Bruges and Antwerp above, though, Ghent isn’t much to look at when you first pull into the train station – but just wait! Walk into its historic town center and  Ghent is a remarkably picturesque city .

Ghent is known all over Belgium for its historic significance, incredible art, and culinary delights. Inside Ghent you’ll find a stunning  medieval castle , winding canals, religious art, and endless bridges.

Even if you only have one day in Ghent – Ghent is absolutely worth visiting and should not be missed on your trip to Belgium.

Exploring  Ghent in one day  is a challenge, but is absolutely possible! I traveled to Ghent from Leuven – which is even further than Brussels – and spent an amazing day in this  Unesco World Heritage Site  city. There are plenty of  things to do in Ghent , so follow this itinerary to make the most of Ghent in one day and discover the most amazing things to do in Ghent, Belgium.

Canals in Ghent with boats moored to the edges and historic homes with lots of windows and a cloudy sky in Ghent

Traveling to Ghent for a Day Trip

The best way to get around Belgium is  by train . Belgium’s train system is efficient and while not the cheapest in Europe it is still relatively inexpensive. You can  easily buy tickets online  per route so you can use them at any time of day.

If you are  staying in Brussels during your trip to Belgium , travel from  Brussels to Ghent  takes less than an hour and is very pleasant.

When you arrive in Ghent, at the Gent-Sint-Pieters Train Station, you might be surprised it doesn’t exactly look like all the tourist photos below! Ghent is a large city and the canals and tiered guild houses that made it a UNESCO World Heritage Site are only in the Historic Center.

A fountain with two gysers and a tall statue with guns on top memorializing a war outside of the train station in Ghent against a blue sky

It’s at least a  20-minute walk  from Ghent Train Station to the city center. A better idea? One of my best Ghent travel tips is to  take the buses or trams!

If you buy a Ghent Card for the day, free public transportation comes pre-loaded onto it. If you are on your own, just download the  DeLijn app   onto your phone and you can easily by a public transport day pass or individual tickets for 2.50 Euro each.

Just be careful and don’t get on the tram going the wrong way like I did! I got quite the unexpected tour of Ghent.  🤦🏽‍♀️

One Day In Ghent: 14 Best Things To Do in Ghent

Ghent has so much to do, and with only  one day in Ghent  you are going to want to start early to have enough time! I advise trying to arrive at the Historic Center around 9 am.

It’s easy to grab breakfast at any train station in Belgium to enjoy on the train then you can start your day fueled and ready to go! Follow this  Ghent itinerary  to make the most of your one day in Ghent!

Morning in Ghent: Take Canal Tour and Visit Gravensteen Castle

A canal in Ghent with beautiful historic Guildhouses.

1. Take a Canal Tour in Ghent

One of the top things to do in Ghent is to take a boat tour through Ghent’s gorgeous canals! The  best time to take a canal tour is the morning  for two reasons: the light is gorgeous for photographs and a canal tour will give you a great orientation to Ghent. You can also beat the crowds in the morning – which is always a plus!

On your guided tour of the canals in Ghent, you will not only see the highlights of the city centre by boat ride, but also get a little further into the “real” Ghent where people live and work and go to school. You’ll pass truly beautiful buildings like the new Ghent library and your local guide will point out a lot of quirky, fun houses and share a lot about the city’s history.

There are many  wonderful boat tours in Ghent   to choose from. To make sure you get a seat I recommend  booking ahead of time online .

If you want to play things by ear for your Ghent day trip, you can always purchase at the kiosks near where the boats leave from, at  Groentenmarkt,  at the Vleeshuisbrug which is a short walk from the main historical city.

Most canal tours cost between 8 and 10 Euro per adult and can be experienced in different languages (English is almost always offered!). The different companies offer slightly different types of boats and length of tour, but they are all great options I honestly wouldn’t spend too much energy on which is best and go with what fits in your schedule and budget.

A view of historic buildings in Ghent against a dramatic sky.

2. Take a Free Walking Tour of Ghent

Like so many cities in Europe, there are plenty of options for so-called “Free Walking Tours” of Ghent. If you prefer to keep your feet on dry land or are interested in a deeper historical exploration of Ghent, a walking tour is a great way to start your Ghent day trip.

Most likely, with only one day in Ghent , you won’t have time to do a canal tour  and  a walking tour – so you can choose which you prefer.

There are a number of companies providing Free Walking Tours of Ghent – perhaps the best known is  Legends of Ghent  which provides a daily tour at 10:30 am (that goes until 1:30 so be prepared for lots of walking!), a nighttime tour if you do  stay in Ghent overnight , and even a tasting tour – yum!

Remember – Free Walking Tours in Europe aren’t, technically, supposed to be completely free and it’s customary to generously tip your guide.

3. Explore Gravensteen Castle, the Castle of the Counts

Gravensteen Castle, which translates to “ Castle of the Counts ,” is an incredible medieval fortress constructed in the late 12th century. Gravensteen was built during the reign of  Philip of Alsace,  the Count of Flanders and throughout the Middle Ages it served as a residence for the Counts of Flanders. It’s a prime example of medieval architecture in Belgium and frankly one of the coolest castles you can visit in all of Europe!

Over the centuries, Gravensteen witnessed a huge number of historical events, including battles, sieges, and political developments. Gravensteen also played an important role in the many conflicts between the Counts of Flanders and the citizens of Ghent over the years.

In the 19th century, sadly Gravensteen was falling apart, and there were discussions about demolishing the castle in Ghent. However, it was eventually  restored in the 19th and 20th centuries,  preserving its historical significance and allowing it to be open to the public.

Today you can visit Gravensteel Castle and stroll along its medieval towers. You can buy your  ticket online here  or at the gate.  Do not forget the audio guide!  It’s wonderful and well worth it

You also have the option to climb the battlements for panoramic views over Ghent’s historical city!

Lunch Time in Ghent: Savor Local Delicacies, and Wander Ghent’s Cobblestone Streets

A bowl of soup in an enamel bowl with a large chunk of brown bread to the left.

4. Savor Ghent’s Culinary Treasures

Anyone visiting Ghent, even for only one day in Ghent, needs to take time to enjoy the local Belgian cuisine! There are lots of great restaurants in Ghent, but wherever you go make sure to try local delicacies such as Ghentse Waterzooi (creamy stew), Belgian fries with their delicious sauces, and Belgian Waffles . And, of course, don’t forget about having a good old Belgian Beer along with it all!

For a quicker meal, but utterly delicious, stop by Soup’r – a little restaurant that serves amazing soups with tons of accoutrements, as well as sandwiches on the most delicious bread. It’s at Sint-Niklaastraat 9 – a stone’s throw away from the canals and cathedrals of Ghent.

5. Sit by Ghent’s canals like a local

One of the best things to do in Ghent is to take whatever Belgian foods you order and sit by the canals! There are a few lovely restaurants right along the canal in Ghent if you’re looking for more sit-down fare, but for to-go foods in Ghent, it’s great to have a picnic by the canal.

It will be easy to spot where to do this because all the students and locals enjoy sitting by the canals during lunch hour and afternoon! It’s delightful to watch the boats go by and get an up-close sense of daily life in Ghent this way!

6. Climb the Belfry of Ghent, Ghent’s Bell Tower

The Belfry Tower in Ghent is located near two of Ghent’s major churches, Saint Bavo’s Cathedral and Saint Nicholas’ Church. The Ghent Belfry was originally built in the 14th century when it was part of the city’s cloth hall and served as a symbol of Ghent’s prosperity and autonomy during medieval times.

The Belfry of Ghent is part of a group of belfries in the Flanders region of Belgium, which were prominent structures in medieval cities.for the best views over the historic city of Ghent!  Ghent’s Belfry is one of the tallest belfry in the region and is a great spot for the best views over Ghent.

You can buy your ticket to the Ghent Belfry online to save time, or when you get there. As of 2023, a regular adult ticket costs 11 Euro, with discounts for young persons and students.

The Stadhuis in Ghent an intricately carved front with niches and statues and flags.

7. Walk up the Botermarkt Street

Very near Ghent’s Bell Tower is Botermarkt Street. This is the old market of Ghent. Here you can see Ghent’s (somewhat controversial) Stadshal – a modern recreation of Ghent’s rooftops.

You can also see Ghent’s Stadhuis – the beautiful town hall with amazing carvings all along it! (It doesn’t quite beat the one in Leuven though – which is one of the most beautiful buildings in all of Belgium!)

Afternoon: Ghent’s Cathedrals and Ghent’s Museums

You can’t go to Ghent, even for one day, without visiting at least one of Ghent’s beautiful and famous churches.

With only one day in Ghent, I advise you to choose one Cathedral to visit.

Of course, I recommend Saint Bavo Cathedral for the Van Eyck Altarpiece “Adoration of the Mystic Lamb” but Saint Michael’s Church and St Nicholas Church are wonderful choices as well! If you have time I highly recommend you visit one of the  Museums in Ghent.

A huge altarpiece behind glass with one person looking at it.

8. Visit St. Bavo’s Cathedral and the Van Eyck Altarpiece

Aside from being one of the largest and most stunningly beautiful  Cathedrals in Europe , St Bavo’s Cathedral is one of the most famous and storied pieces of religious art in the world: the Van Eyck Altarpiece , also called the ‘Adoration of the Mystic Lamb.’ This is truly one of the most incredible pieces of art I’ve ever seen and is well worth the admission price to see – it’s also one of the biggest tourist attractions in all of Belgium!

Aside from simply being stunningly detailed and symbolic, the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb is known as the most stolen painting in history!

A tall painting showing lots of people in dynamic poses by Rubens in St. Bavo's in Ghent

Created by the Flemish artists Jan van Eyck and his brother Hubert van Eyck, first the Ghent Altarpiece was taken during the  French Revolution in 1794  and briefly displayed in the Louvre before being returned to Belgium.

The worst blow came in 1934 when the lower left panel, called the Just Judges, was stolen from the Van Eyck Altarpiece overnight – it has never been recovered but many Belgians and Art Historians dream of being the one to find it! There is a copy in place today – but honestly it’s just not nearly as incredible as Van Eyck’s original work.

Later the Nazi’s looted the Ghent Altarpiece in 1942, and it was finally recovered by Allied Forces in 1945.

St. Bavo’s Cathedral itself is a wonderful example of gothic architecture with beautiful stained glass windows and a soaring nave. Don’t miss some of the other art treasures inside, such as paintings by Rubens!

9. Visit St. Michael’s Church

The outside of St. Michael's Cathedral in Ghent

St. Michael’s Church is another gorgeous Gothic Cathedral in Ghent that dates back to the 10th century when it was founded by Bishop Notger of Liège. The original church was constructed in the Romanesque style, and fragments of this early structure can still be seen in the church today.

In the 13th century, the church underwent significant renovations and was transformed into the Gothic style.

St. Michael’s Church is known for its impressive Gothic architecture , with soaring vaulted ceilings and beautiful stained glass windows. It’s also known for the art inside, including a magnificent Baroque high altar and a carved pulpit. The Ghent Altarpiece was originally housed in Saint Michael’s Church before being moved to Saint Bavo’s Cathedral.

You can find St. Michael’s Church just past St. Michael’s Bridge near one of the nicest areas of canals in Ghent – the bridge offers a beautiful view of the church and some of the famous guildhouses in Ghent.

Even if you only have one day in Ghent, I recommend popping inside St. Michael’s Church at least briefly!

10. Visit St. Nicholaschurch

St. Nicholaschurch is very near Ghent’s Belfry and St. Bavo’s Cathedral.  Saint Nicholas Church was started around 1200. It was commissioned by the local guilds and merchants who wanted a church that would rival St. Bavo’s Cathedral.

Like the other two main churches in Ghent, St. Nicholaschurch is built in the Gothic architectural style. In medival Ghent, St. Nicholas’ Church served as a place of worship for the city’s merchants and guild members. It was also used for important civic functions and meetings.

St. Nicholaschurch originally had a tall bell tower, but it was severely damaged in a storm in the 15th century and was subsequently shortened. The current tower is still impressive!

11. Visit MSK – Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent

Even with only one day in Ghent, the Museum of Fine Arts is a must-visit for art enthusiasts in Ghent! I recommend doing this towards the mid-late afternoon. In the summers you’ll beat the heat and this makes a great capstone to your day before heading back to Brussels or enjoying dinner by the canals of Ghent.

The MSK Ghent has an impressive collection of old masterpieces, including works by famous artists such as Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, and Jan van Eyck.

For those who prefer more modern art, The Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent also features an extensive collection of 19th and 20th-century European art . including works by artists like James Ensor, Gustav Klimt, René Magritte.

The best way to get to the MSK Museum in Ghent from the historic center is to hop on Tram 1 heading towards “Flanders Expo”. There is a stop on that line right in front of the art museum! Otherwise, it’s about a 20-25 minute walk from the city center.

A modern building with two wooden points against a dramatic sky

12. Visit STAM – The Ghent City Museum

The Ghent City Museum is another of Ghent’s museums that is well worth visiting, even with only one day in Ghent!  This   museum in particular might warrant visiting in the morning, as it will give you a comprehensive overview of Ghent and its history. It’s also a nice capstone to your one day in Ghent!

STAM offers a comprehensive overview of the history of Ghent. Using a combination of artifacts, multimedia displays, maps, and interactive installations,  the STAM tells the story of the city from its early origins to the present day. One of the coolest features of STAM is a large-scale model of the city of Ghent that allows visitors to explore the city’s layout and development over time.

Don’t miss that STAM offers excellent panoramic views of the city from its rooftop terrace! It’s a great place to relax for a few moments and enjoy a gorgeous view of Ghent, Belgium!

13. Visit S.M.A.K. – The Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art in Ghent

For those who prefer more contemporary art to historic art, Ghent is an amazing place for modern art! Not only is Ghent known for amazing street art (see below) but the SMAK Museum, or Museum of Contemporary Art in Ghent is world-renowned!

It’s particularly known for site-specific installations and contemporary art installations that engage with the museum’s architecture and spaces, providing visitors with immersive and unique experiences.

14. Explore Ghent’s Amazing Street Art Scene

Ghent is a real hub in Belgium and in Europe for Street Art . Where to  Stay in Brussels  for a Day Trip to Ghent

If you’re planning to take a day trip to Ghent while you visit Belgium , and perhaps other great day trips in Belgium like a day trip to Leuven or Antwerp or – of course – Bruges, then you should definitely consider staying near one of Brussel’s main train stations.  This map shows the two main train stations in Brussels as well as some great accommodation options in Brussels!

Where to Stay in Ghent, Belgium

You may choose to stay overnight in Ghent to give you more than one day in Ghent – since there’s so much to do! If you choose to do so, I recommend paying that little bit extra to stay in the historic center, near the canals, to fully embrace the beauty of Ghent by night and enjoy every minute of your trip to Ghent!

Three great hotel options in Ghent, Belgium at different budget points are:

1898 The Post ($$$) is perhaps the best hotel in Ghent right in the historic center! It’s such a beautiful property and would make an amazing treat after your day in Ghent!

At a more budget price, the B&B Petit Prince is a highly-rated hotel in Ghent that combines comfort with being a bit more budget-friendly!

You can also choose to stay in a converted Monastery in Ghent! The Monasterium PoortAckere is an older property but with gorgeous architecture and is perfect for spiritual travelers (all are welcome of course!).

Your guide will mix modern and historical facts, and provide plenty of local insight into the different Ghent attractions.

3. Do a Beer and Chocolate Tour with a Local Guide

I had the pleasure of taking a 3-hour beer tour with Liselot, the fantastic founder and guide of Belgium beer days. Guys, I highly recommend this tour, because you not only drink nine different types of beer.

But Liselot also educated my tour group on Belgium’s proud brewing traditions, how and why they are so many different types of beer in Belgium.

Throughout the tour, I sampled beers from big Belgium brands and craftwork brews, tasting a mix of malty, hoppy, fruity, reddish, and herby beers to sour beers.

I learnt how to pair chocolate and beer using different flavour combinations – aka pairing Neuzeke with sour beer. This pairing is for the people with a unique pallet, like me. It’s a weird combo, but I liked it.

This tour was interactive and fun, Liselot’s passionate for Belgium beer shows in this tour, and it made me love trying the beers even more. Plus she showed us tranquil little places and shops that only the local’s know.

If you love beer, heck if you are a beer novice like myself, I highly recommend that you do this tour. You’ll not only taste lush beers, learn some cultured beer stuff to impress your friends back home but also have fun doing it.

What to Eat in Ghent Belgium

WhattoEatinGhent

Now that we’ve covered the top things to see in Ghent in one day, let’s talk about the food! This Belgian city has many tasty local treats you should absolutely try when visiting.

Frites: These are commonly called French fries by Americans and chips by the Brits. In Belgium, they’re thick-cut and double-fried.

This produces an extra crispy outside and a soft inside. They’re usually served with creamy Belgium mayo. They’re an incredibly tasty snack and best enjoyed fresh from a food stand.

Waffles:  Belgian waffles are famous around the world. They’re different than regular waffles in that they have deeper pockets due to the waffle iron they’re cooked in.

The batter is also lighter than typical batter. This results in a fluffy waffle ???? goodness of heavenly proportion.

You can find them at street carts across the city. They’re cooked up fresh and can be served with many different toppings.

Chocolate: Like waffles, Belgian chocolate is known worldwide for being exceptionally delicious. What makes the, chocolate here so unique is its high cocoa content, which is generally more than regular chocolate.  Chocolate shops are in high supply all over the city. Grab a small box to enjoy during the day, and stock up on more to take home with you. Your one day in Ghent Belgium would not be complete without popping into a chocolate shop and indulging in this sweet treat.

Neuzeke – aka Belgium nose aka Cuberdons: These are popular cone-shaped Belgium candies. Neuzekes translates to “little nose” for its appearance that shares similarities to a human nose. After chocolate, they’re the second most popular candy in Ghent.

They have a gummy candy crust and a sweet liquid filling. The most popular flavour is raspberry. You’ll find them in sweet shops and street stalls throughout the city.

The sweets pair well with Belgium sour beers as the combat the taste of the beer, a cultured fact I learnt on my beer tour.

Beer: Beer fan or not, you can’t visit Ghent without enjoying a pint or two or nine. The Belgiums have a proud beer culture, and there’s no shortage of cosy pubs in Ghent.

Purchase a flight of beer and try as many variations as possible. Or, ask the local bartender for their recommendation.

Shops to Visit when in Ghent

Historical center of Gent Belgium 1

Tierenteyn-Verlent – One of the oldest shops in Ghent which produces and sells Belgium mustard, piccalilli and other related products. The listed 1860s interior forms the perfect setting for the range of herbs and spices.

This shop is excellent for picking up some authentic Ghent souvenirs for family and friends.

Oud Huis Himschoot (Old House Himschoot) – The oldest bakery in Ghent where bread is still baked here in the basement according to the traditional method.

From the outside, the small bakery seduces you with delicious looking fresh pastries. But you can’t try them all, so pick the local speciality ‘mastel’.

It’s a small bread, which looks similar to a doughnut, but it’s made of a similar dough to that of brioche, with cinnamon added to taste.

Is Ghent Worth Visiting?

Yes Ghent is worth visiting, Ghent might not be as well-known as Brussels and Bruges, but this low-key popularity is what makes it all the more charming.

It remains slightly less busy (for now) and has all the amazing characteristics of a fairytale European city.  Think medieval buildings, scenic waterways, cobblestone streets, cosy cafes and friendly locals.

Is One Day in Ghent Enough?

One day in Ghent Belgium, is definitely enough time to see the major Ghent landmarks. It’s a small city, and it’s very easy to get around – even as a first time visitor.

Of course, if you have more time, you could extend your trip and spend a weekend in Ghent Beglium. However, all of the points of interest I’ve included are things to do in Ghent in one day.

When is the Best Time to Visit Ghent Belgium?

view on the center of Ghent in Belgium

Here is a quick rundown of the seasons, so you know what to expect during your one day in Ghent Belgium.

🌼 Spring (March – May) in Ghent sees a slow rise in temperatures coming out of winter. These are the months when it rains the least. As long as you have a light jacket, Spring is a great time to visit Ghent.

☀️ Summer (June – August) produces the warmest temperatures in Ghent. Expect the days to hover around a pleasant 21 – 23 degrees Celsius. This is considered peak tourist season in Ghent.

The Ghent Festival ( Gentse Feesten ) is an annual music and theatre festival that takes place every July. It attracts a huge crowd. In recent years, about two million visitors have attended. It’s one of the biggest festivals in Europe.

🍁 Autumn (September – October) is absolutely breathtaking. The leaves take on a rustic red and burnt orange colour, and the temperatures are very comfortable and conducive to outside activities.

The whole city becomes extra cosy during winter (November – February) . Ghent lights up with twinkling lights and an annual Christmas market takes place in December.

You can find hot spiced wine and Christmas crafts in high supply. If you’re looking for a place to get in the Christmas spirit, Ghent will not disappoint.

I visited at the end of February, when the city was in the grip of winter, with grey skies and rain. So, I’d recommend visiting during spring, summer or autumn and mid-December for the Christmas markets.

Getting Around Ghent Belgium

Views of Ghent from Gravensteen

If you’re planning on covering all the top things to do in Ghent in a day, you’re probably wondering how to get around.

Luckily, Ghent is a very walkable city , and most of the main tourist attractions in Ghent are concentrated close to one another.

It’s the total tourist package!  Ghent city centre is small and pedestrian-friendly, you can easily travel from site to site on foot.

However, if you need a backup for rainy days in Ghent or want to give your feet a break, Ghent has an excellent public transport system. Buses and trams will take you anywhere you want to go and run from early morning till late at night.

Note: If you are planning on spending a weekend in Ghent Belgium then getting a Ghent City card is best as the card includes the top attractions in Ghent and public transport at a low price.

How Long Does It Take To Get To Ghent?

How long does it take to get to Ghent? Well, that depends on where you’re coming from. Luckily, Ghent is very close to Belgium’s capital city, Brussels. The train between the two cities only takes about 35 – 40 minutes.

If you’re travelling to Ghent from far away, the nearest airport is Brussels Airport (BRU) in Zaventem, just northeast of Brussels. This is where you’ll want to fly into before continuing your short trip to Ghent.

Given its location, this Belgium city makes for a great day trip from London and Bruges. If you’re only visiting Ghent in a day, you’re probably wondering the shortest and most convenient way to get there.

Here is some helpful information about the best ways to reach Ghent from these three cities.

🚗 London to Ghent Day Trip

A Ghent day trip from London takes about three hours by train. To get there, take the London to Ghent train (Eurostar) from London St Pancras International Railway Station. You’ll switch trains in Brussels and continue your journey to Ghent with a local train.

Even though you switch trains, you’ll only need to purchase one ticket – which is for the Eurostar. It will be valid for all local trains in Belgium within a 24 hour period from the time your Eurostar arrives and departs.

There are usually 7 – 9 trains that run between these cities each day. As long as you get an early start, travelling to Ghent by train from London makes for a great day trip. Your train tickets from London to Ghent can cost as little as £77.00 for a standard round trip fare.

🚗 Getting to Ghent from Brussels

Getting from Brussel to Ghent is super fast and only takes about 40 minutes by train. From Brussels, ride the Belgian Rail to Ghent Dampoort Station or Gent-Sint-Pieters train station. These are the two main train stations in Ghent.

You can be quite flexible with your trip too, as trains run between the two cities all day, every day. A round trip ticket will cost about £16.00.

Visiting Ghent by car is another option, and it only takes about 50 minutes. Seeing as the train easily connects these three cities, you could even visit Bruges and Ghent in one day if you get an early enough start.

If you are travelling from Brussels-Midi (Bruxelles-Midi) to Ghent via train during the weekend, tickets are 50% off (€15.40) on 2nd class day train tickets. The discount is applied at the ticket machine automatically.

🚗 Getting to Ghent from Bruges

Getting to Ghent from Bruges is equally as easy, and takes between 25 – 30 minutes by Belgian Rail. Trains run between the cites all day. Hop on at Bruges’ main train station: Station Brugge and take it to either Ghent Dampoort Station or Gent-Sint-Pieters.  Since it’s a shorter distance, your ticket will only cost about £13.00.

Ghent Things to Do in a Day – What To do in Ghent For A Day

I hope you enjoyed this list of what to see in Ghent in 1 day. You’ll find no shortage of activities to fill your time. Ghent is very much a modern city, but it retains its medieval charm.

As you walk next to historic buildings and through narrow cobblestone streets, you’ll feel as if you’re in another world.

Apart from the main attractions in Ghent Belgium, don’t forget to enjoy a traditional Flemish dish. Stop at a street stand for waffles and pop into a sweet shop for chocolate and Neuzekes . Visit a lively pub or an intimate restaurant.

Now that you’re fully sorted with what to see in Ghent in one day, how about you continue your journey through Belgium and enjoy an Antwerp city break?

The Best Things to Do in One Day in Ghent (Ghent Day Trip Guide)

Although not a hidden gem by any means, a Ghent day trip might not take the top spot on your bucket list of things to do in Belgium. However, I’m here to change that! Truthfully, a trip to Belgium isn’t complete without a visit to this proudly Flemish city, where old meets new – be it the medieval castle and classic cobbled centre paired with the excitingly modern De Krook or eclectic street art, or the blossoming veggie food scene finding its place amongst traditional hearty food and confectionary like cuberdons.

As one of the closest cities to the capital, Ghent is one of the best day trips to take from Brussels , and this easy guide has everything you need to plan one day in Ghent.

How to Get to Ghent from Brussels

The distance from Brussels to Ghent is small – in fact, the cities are only a thirty-minute train ride apart! Board a train at any of Brussels’ three main train stations – Midi/Zuid, Central/Centraal, or North/Nord/Noord and you’ll alight at Gent-Sint-Pieters station in no time. Trains depart every 20-30 minutes.

Top Tip: Gent-Sint-Pieters train station is not in the centre of Ghent, so you’ll be met with a 15-minute tram ride or 30-minute walk when you arrive.

To break up the long walk between Ghent’s train station and the city centre, start your Ghent day trip with a visit to one of Ghent’s best museums. Opt for SMAK, Ghent’s contemporary art museum in the beautiful and spacious Citadelpark, or STAM, which celebrates Ghent’s history and culture. These museums are definitely some of the best places to visit in Ghent in one day.

  • St Peter’s Abbey

Continue your journey into the centre passing the spectacular St Peter’s Abbey (Sint-Pietersabdij). The abbey has a rich history – which you can learn about here as the abbey is used as a museum. Make sure you also check out the secret garden at the back of the abbey, one of the best free hidden gems in Ghent !

I also recommend a stop at De Krook, Ghent’s excitingly modern public library. The building was opened in 2017, reviving a previously run-down area of the city while simultaneously providing a space for innovative research and the community of Ghent.

The secret garden behind St Peter's Abbey in Ghent, Belgium

  • Gravensteen Castle

With only one day in Ghent, Gravensteen Castle is an absolute must-see. The medieval fortress has a spectacular history – it has housed many counts and has been used as a prison, a court, a mint, and a cotton mill!

Nowadays, Gravensteen Castle is used as a museum where you can learn all about this interesting past, and even visit the torture chambers. After, wander around the castle to see the impressive exterior and its surrounding moat – the only one in Ghent.

Graslei & The Centre

Now it’s time to explore Ghent’s picturesque centre and the city’s riverside hub, Graslei. The cobbled streets, gingerbread house-esque buildings, market squares and outdoor bars are very typical of Belgian culture.

By this point in your Ghent day trip, you might want to grab some lunch and sit down for a coffee – or a Belgian beer. Although a little touristy, I always love to sit at the terraces around Graslei, as the vibes are the views are fantastic. For food, it has to be Belgian fries – try the popular Frites Atelier or Friterie Het Puntzakje.

Some spots to look out for as you explore Graslei and the centre of Ghent are Stadhuis , Ghent’s ornate city hall, Graffiti Street , a vibrant alleyway filled with fun graffiti and street art, and Vrijdagmarkt , a large market square that’s equally worth a visit during and outwith market hours.

If you’re interested in learning about Ghent’s history and culture from a local, I recommend booking a guided walking tour around Ghent . Find some more things to do in Ghent below.

Ghent’s Churches

Ghent’s centre has an abundance of churches to visit – don’t miss St Bavo’s Cathedral (Sint-Baafskathedraal), Saint Nicholas’ Church (Sint-Niklaaskerk), and Saint Michael’s Church (Sint-Michielskerk). You can see them all from the beautiful stone arch bridge, Sint-Michielsbrug .

Cuberdons at Groentenmarket

Sample one of Ghent’s delicacies from traditional carts around the city. Cuberdons are cone-shaped candies that were accidentally discovered by a Ghent native, pharmacist De Vynck, back in the 1800s.

There are plenty of places to try this popular candy in Ghent, but Groentenmarkt is a great spot in the centre. Typically, there are cuberdon shops with little carts outside where you can sample and buy some sweets.

If you’d like to learn about the full story of the cuberdon, check out this guide to Belgian food you must try in Brussels!

Vrijdagmarkt (Friday Market) Square in Ghent with the statue of Jacob Van Artevelde

With just one day in Ghent, you’ll want to make the most of your time, and one of the most exciting things to do in Ghent is to jump on a boat tour and see the city from the water. Typically, boat tours come with an audio guide, making this a great way to learn all about Ghent as you ride around.

  • Ghent Belfry

Ghent’s belfry dates back to the 14th century when it was used as a watchtower and belltower. These days, you can still hear the bells ring out every Sunday, and you can climb to the top of the tower and see amazing panoramic views over Ghent.

Once you’ve visited the Belfry, round up your day trip to Ghent with a walk through the centre – you might want to do a spot of shopping at some of Ghent’s great vintage stores and boutiques along the way. Either grab dinner in Ghent (I’ll leave a few recommendations below) or head back to the capital and check out one of the best restaurants in Brussels .

The Best Things to Do in One Day in Ghent

With the Ghent day trip itinerary above, you’ll be all set to spend a day in Ghent. Here’s a round-up of all the amazing things you can get up to!

  • Ghent Boat Tour from Graslei
  • SMAK Modern Art Museum
  • STAM, Ghent’s City Museum
  • Graffiti Street
  • Try some Cuberdons
  • Sint-Michielsbrug and Ghent’s many churches
  • Vrijdagmarkt

Ghent Day Tours

If you want to take the hassle out of a day trip to Ghent, you could book a Ghent day tour from Brussels. Most tours will combine Bruges and Ghent in a day as they’re close to each other and easily combined in a day trip.

Whether you choose to book a day trip to Ghent or plan one on your own, I’m sure you’ll love this exciting Belgian city. If you’re looking for more Belgian day trip ideas, check out these guides to a day in Bruges or the Belgian Coast .

9 Great Things to Do in Ghent in One Day

Oh, Ghent: this small university city in the Flanders region of Belgium may be perpetually overshadowed by the ever-gorgeous Bruges, but it is a beautiful and charming city in its own right–and since Ghent is so small, it’s very reasonable to conquer the best things to do in Ghent in one day.

We fell hard and fast for this walkable canal city, complete with beautiful architecture, interesting history, and–of course–excellent waffles.

If you’re planning a trip to Belgium, here’s how to make the most of spending one day in Ghent!

Table of Contents

The Best Things to Do in Ghent in One Day

What to eat when visiting ghent, belgium, getting around ghent, belgium, getting to ghent from brussels or bruges, looking for a day trip to ghent, where we stayed in ghent.

Take a walk down Werregarenstraat.

What do you do if you want to encourage street art in your city, but also want to protect priceless buildings?

Dedicate an entire street to art, of course!

Werregarenstraat (say that five times fast!) is a walking street home to a bright and ever-changing collection of street art in Ghent .

Ghent or Bruges: Ghent Graffiti Street

Pay a visit to Gravensteen.

If you’re looking for a castle that looks like it belongs in a fairytale, look no further than Gravensteen.

Dating back to the Middle Ages and set directly next to one of Ghent’s canals, Gravensteen is majestic and impressive to behold.

Depending on your priorities during your day in Ghent, you may have time to tour the interior, which operates as a museum open to the public.

Either way, be sure to stop by the castle for gorgeous views!

Soak in the views from St. Michael’s Bridge.

One of the most famous views in Ghent is found by standing on St. Michael’s Bridge.

From there, you can admire all three of Ghent’s medieval towers in one view: the towers of St. Nicholas’ Church, the Belfry, and St. Bavo’s Cathedral.

Wander through Patershol.

Stepping into the picturesque neighborhood of Patershol is like stepping into a storybook: think cobblestone streets and classic Flemish rooflines.

Though the main street has plenty of cafes and restaurants to choose from if you’re looking for something to eat, it’s the quiet back streets that are our favorite to explore.

Visit St. Bavo’s Cathedral.

St. Bavo’s Cathedral has a gorgeous interior (and as of our visit in late 2017, a temporary display of a whale’s skeleton hanging from the ceiling), but is best known for being home to the Flemish art piece The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb.

Climb the Belfry for great views over Ghent.

If you want to see the best views of Ghent’s rooftops and get an epic view of St. Bavo’s Cathedral, make your way up the Belfry–366 steps up, to be exact.

When weighing the pros and cons of what to do in Ghent (or any other city, for that matter), we tend to find that we never regret making the climb up to beautiful viewpoints!

One Day in Ghent: Climb the Belfry

Take a ride through the canals.

Riding through Ghent’s many canals while admiring the views and learning the city’s history is one of the most popular things to do in Ghent for a reason.

There’s nothing like taking to the water to get a different perspective on Ghent: staring up at Ghent’s beautiful architecture from the canals will give you a whole new perspective on the city.

Admire the lights of Ghent by night.

Ghent doesn’t want its magical beauty to fade away when the sun sets–and with a little ingenuity and some clever light installations, it definitely doesn’t.

A series of lights work at night to light up Ghent, casting gorgeous reflections into the canals below.

A walk along Ghent’s canals at night definitely can’t be missed when trying to see Ghent in one day!

One Day in Ghent: Bike Rider

One day in Ghent may not give you enough time to eat your way through all of the city’s restaurants, but there are a few indulgences (primarily unhealthy ones) that cannot be missed.

Think that French fries are, well, French?

If so, don’t say that in Belgium: what Americans call French fries are very proudly known as Belgian frites in Ghent and beyond within Belgium, and they are incredibly tasty.

Typically served with Belgian mayo (which is utterly delicious and not to be confused with the bottled stuff from the grocery store), Belgian frites are a can’t-miss snack in Belgium.

basket of belgian frites topped with belgian mayo

Like Belgian waffles, Belgian chocolate is iconic: find a delicious chocolate store and go crazy.

Since chocolate is so portable, don’t forget to pick some up to bring home!

Belgian waffles are known worldwide, but there is nothing like the real thing!

We recommend buying one from a street cart that is cooking them fresh (not simply reheating ones that are hours old).

There are plenty of toppings to choose from, but we’re partial to Nutella.

No day in Ghent can be considered complete without a taste of Belgian beer!

If you’re a beer lover, consider purchasing a flight of Belgian beer in any number of Ghent’s pubs to make sure you try as many variations as possible during your one day in Ghent.

If you’re a beer lover and want to make the most of your one day in Ghent, consider booking a beer crawl to sample several drinks in one go, all while learning the ins and outs of the local beer scene.

During our trip to Belgium, we had guides in both Bruges and Ghent claim these candies as originating in their city, but one thing is clear: they’re definitely Flemish.

Also known as Cuberdons, these small candies have a soft raspberry syrup in the center and can be purchased from any number of street stalls and candy shops in Ghent.

Ghent is a very walkable city, and depending on where you stay in Ghent , there’s a good chance you won’t need anything more than your feet to explore the city.

However, if you want to move a little faster when exploring all of the things to see in Ghent, the public transportation system is excellent and easy to use.

Please note that tickets for buses and trams can be purchased either near the stops from vending machines or on the bus or tram itself–but if you wait to purchase until you’re on board, you’ll pay more.

You can also consider using a Ghent City card when visiting Ghent –it includes access to public transportation as well as several sights in the city.

Ghent is conveniently located right in between Brussels and Bruges on Belgium’s easy-to-use train system: it’s about a 30-minute ride from each city, making it the perfect addition to any Belgium itinerary .

You can visit Ghent in one day from either city, or you can do what we did and stick around for a few days.

Trains run from Ghent to both Brussels and Bruges all day, every day.

While you should definitely check the train station in advance, you should have no problem hopping on a train to Ghent just about whenever you need to.

If you’re limited on time and would rather have someone else handle the logistics, consider booking a day trip to Ghent!

Day trips are perfect for visitors who want to make the most of a short timeframe and can help you see the best Ghent attractions in the most efficient fashion.

This day trip to Ghent and Bruges from Brussels is incredibly popular for good reason!

Ultimately, we loved our time in Ghent: the city is adorable and relaxing, home to beautiful views, some of the prettiest architecture we’ve ever seen, and absolutely delicious snacks (always a plus in our book).

We would love to go back, and absolutely believe that spending one day in Ghent (or even more!) is a worthy addition to any Belgium itinerary .

Airbnb: Complete Private Floor — We adored our stay in Ghent!

This Airbnb is listed as a private room, though it was actually a private floor, including a bedroom, living room, and bathroom.

Everything was incredibly clean and well decorated, the bed is one of the most comfortable we slept on all year, and the couple who owns the home took absolutely amazing care of us.

Though the property is a bit of a walk from the city center (about 25 minutes), we didn’t mind and would absolutely stay here again.

Such good recommendations – thank you!

Thanks, Rachel!

I keep coming back to this post as I’m starting to plan my trip! The way your organized your post is incredible helpful – so thank you! I’m so excited to share my experience with you after this trip!

Ah, that’s so great to hear Rachel! Hope you have an amazing time. 🙂

Ghent really looks like something out of a fairytale, it’s so pretty. Who can say no to waffles, certainly not me! And I’m sure walking this city is a must as there’s probably so much to see in side streets.

Oh, absolutely–we spent the bulk of our time in Ghent wandering around semi-aimlessly.

I so love the look and charm of this town. Taking the canal ride, walking the streets, trying the waffles and fries, not to mention taking photos would all be highlights for me. Next year we are planning to visit my finance’s original home town in Delft, in the south of the Netherlands, near the Belgian border. I can’t wait to head over to explore Belgium a bit as well after seeing this post.

Sounds like you guys have an amazing trip planned! Flanders is a beautiful part of Belgium, hope you guys get the chance to make it there. 🙂

Great idea’s. Had never even considered visiting Ghent before. Beautiful pictures as well

Thanks, Nicola!

Ghent looks so beautiful and those waffles looks yummy too. I love to take walk while am in a different country/place. Walking makes u explore small little amazing things.

Very true, Nazy! That’s one of our favorite things about visiting cities and towns in Europe.

I never imagined Ghent to be so beautiful, it truly looks like straight out of a fairytale and I mean look at those colourful streets, the graffiti on it. A creative person like me can spend hours just starting at those and riding through the canals is always a luring affair for me. I can again spend hours doing just that.

Fairytale is the perfect word choice for sure!

I lived in Belgium for a year and regularly would visit. It’s been a while though so thanks for jogging my memories. Beautiful photos which really bring it to life

Ah, what a fun place to live for a year! Sounds like a wonderful experience.

I admire the slightly abandoned sort of look Ghent seems to have about it. I particularly enjoyed the first photo of the buildings along the canal. The food sounds delicious as well. I haven’t ever had Neuzekes, and would love to try them if given the chance.

Thanks, Denny! I agree–the slightly less maintained sections of Ghent give it very interesting character.

Ghent looks like its straight out of a fairytale! I love the old architecture and quaint stone streets, as well as how uncluttered the city feels. I’d for sure love to spend a day, or a few here. So beautiful!

Uncluttered–I like that word choice! Very true for what we saw of Belgium in general.

One Day in Ghent: The Ultimate Ghent Day Trip

' src=

Ghent, Belgium is a fairytale world just waiting to be explored. Ancient castles, medieval architecture, romantic canals… what more could you want to fit into one day in Ghent?

Ghent is full of beautiful sights and exciting activities around every corner making it one of the most sought-after destinations in not only Belgium but Europe, as well!

In this post, you’ll find everything you need to know about visiting Ghent for one day. From the best things to do, how to get around, practical tips for visiting, where to eat, where to stay, and more!

I hope this post helps you find exactly what you’re looking for while planning a trip to Belgium , and you find yourself wanting to return!

The Perfect One Day in Ghent Itinerary

Even if you only have one day in Ghent, you’ll be able to pack a lot of fun into your day. Most of the places I have listed below can be squeezed into one day, but you may feel a little rushed.

So, what I like to do when traveling is instead of rushing through everything to get everywhere (though we are culprits of this rather often), is I’ll tell myself “I’m going to come back.”

Traveling is a way of life – it teaches us about different people, different cultures, and different traditions . .. without it, we’re forced to only know what we hear from other travelers’ tales, books, or the media. Emily Cuneo

The Best Things To Do in Ghent

I truly believe that traveling is essential to have a firm grasp on the realities of the world, so, there is no reason I shouldn’t continue my travels in the future no matter what happens!

So, don’t worry about squeezing everything into your one day in Ghent itinerary, but instead think of a time when you’ll be able to return and spend more time in Belgium as a whole, including Ghent!

Vrijdagmarkt

ghent day tours

Vrijdagmarkt is one of the main squares in Ghent’s historical center. It was originally named for its Friday markets ( Vrijdag means Friday in Dutch) where you can still find outdoor stalls selling everything from unique textiles to food and clothing centuries later.

Over time, the market has scaled back in size and has begun to sell more modern items like iPhone cases, etc. in addition to traditional goods. While the market may not be selling as authentic Belgium souvenirs as it once did, it is no less fun to check out!

It’s a beautiful spot in town and is also home to some great restaurants and bars (though many in this area will be quite touristy and expensive) as well as charming outdoor cafes .

The area makes for some great people-watching as tourists make their way through the market as well as the perfect spot to enjoy a morning breakfast.

Vrijdagmarkt is also a great spot to begin your Ghent itinerary due to its central location enclosed by the Leie River.

Korenlei and Graslei

ghent day tours

In the heart of Ghent, the two quays of Korenlei and Graslei sit across from each other right on the banks of the Leie River. Conveniently connected by the beautiful Grasbrug Bridge , this is one of the best parts of town!

At the meeting point of the two quays, visitors will find an array of outdoor cafes , hip bars , and trendy restaurants serving up some of the best food in the city.

You’ll also be exposed to an area of breathtaking beauty where you’ll be surrounded by medieval architecture, stone arch bridges, a lovely canal, and beautiful string lights in the summers and winters!

While this part of the city can sometimes be quite touristy , if you visit in the off-seasons as I suggested you’ll find some of the best scenery in Ghent!

Gravensteen Castle

Gravensteen Castle is a must see during your one day in Ghent

The 12 th -century medieval castle known as Gravensteen is the most popular tourist attraction in Ghent and is easily recognized across Europe.

But, there’s a dark history to this grand castle that many people are unaware of. Once a prison and mint, Gravensteen, also known as the Castle of the Counts , was home to Count Philip of Alsace who abused his power and enforced horrific interrogation methods on the inmates that were trialed there.

Prisoners were gruelingly tortured to confess their crimes, and many even faced fatal harassment. This lasted until the 18 th century, but today, visitors can learn about the torture methods they used, the history behind the Counts that resided there, and how it came to be a cotton mill in the early 19 th century.

Guided day tours are available as well as self-guided tours and audio tours. You can find more information at Visit Ghent on the history behind the castle, but the best way to learn about the events first-hand is to take a guided tour !

Walking Tour through the Medieval Neighborhoods

Be sure to stroll through the medieval neighborhoods during your one day in Ghent

When doing a walking tour through Ghent, you can choose between joining a guided walking tour with a company or creating your very own walking tour with the use of a local map!

In our experience, we find self-guided tours to be more rewarding since we can include only what we actually want to spend our time at and we can choose to skip whatever we aren’t interested in.

But, that’s not to say that having a local guide who can tell you more about the history of Ghent and the local architecture, traditions, and Belgian culture isn’t an invaluable resource ! Just be sure to do some research before choosing a guide, as not all are created equal.

Along your walking tour, be sure to check out Patershol – known as the ancient quarter for its medieval architecture and tight network of narrow streets, you’ll find cozy pubs and cool souvenirs here!

Additionally, the neighborhoods of Kouter for its expansive flower and plant markets and Prinsenhof for its 16 th -century ancient palace ruins and charming residential houses without all of the tourists are definitely worth a small piece of your time in Ghent!

Take a Food and Beer Tour

If you’re going to Ghent or even Belgium as a whole, you shouldn’t deny yourself the fun of a food and beer tour! They range vastly from what foods they include like the traditional chocolates, waffles, and moules-frites as well as alcohol including beer, whiskey, and sometimes gin.

You can even find tours that allow you to cook with a local !

Take a peek at the tours below and see if any may be a good fit for you. They range from 1 hour and up and all offer exceptional reviews. I haven’t done all of these tours myself, but I have found that many of them are well known across Ghent .

Best Food and Beer Tours in Ghent

Sint-Michielsbrug and Saint Michael’s Church

ghent day tours

Adorned with a beautiful statue of St. Michael, the Sint-Michielsbrug, or St. Michael’s Bridge, is one of the most famed stone arch bridges in the city.

It offers a fantastic vantage point overlooking the Leie River and provides visitors with one of the best perspectives of the Korenlei and Graslei quays!

Take some time to stroll over the bridge, capture a few wonderful photos, and then make your way over to the accompanying Saint Michael’s Church .

Easily seen from across the city, Saint Michael’s Church is recognized for its striking tower and gothic exterior. The exterior contradicts its interior which is embellished with beautiful artwork, large colonnades, and stunning stained glass windows .

This Roman Catholic church is a must-see when spending one day in Ghent, even if it’s only for a short period of time. The architecture and design will truly take your breath away even if you aren’t someone with a particular interest in cathedrals!

Take a Canal Boat Ride

If you only have one day in Ghent, be sure to take a canal boat ride

If you’ve ever visited Amsterdam or Bruges, it’s likely you have at the very least heard of or seen a canal boat ride go by. And I’m here to tell you that this should be at the top of your list for things to do during your one day in Ghent!

A canal boat ride offers you a completely unique perspective on the city. From the water, you’ll be looking up at all of the beautiful architecture and cafes , and you’ll glide by many of the city’s attractions (like Gravensteen Castle).

You’ll also be rewarded with the opportunity to relax and rest your feet while sightseeing . We all know how running from place to place can be exhausting, so why not sit back and let someone else take the wheel?

That way, all you’ll need to do is take a picture when the prime moment presents itself. After all, isn’t that what taking a vacation is all about?

Taking a canal boat ride is a great way to see the city while catching your breath , take advantage of some unique photo opportunities, and experience the city from a different viewpoint!

Not to mention that you can usually find boats that will provide alcohol included in the price… how can you beat that?

Map of One Day in Ghent Itinerary

The map below has everything that I just mentioned labeled for you, so it’s quick and simple to plan your walking route.

If you like it, share it on your Facebook, Twitter, or even email so you can have it when you visit Ghent!

How to Get to Ghent for One Day

ghent day tours

Owing to Ghent’s precise location directly between Brussels and Bruges, getting to this gothic Belgium city couldn’t be easier .

If you’re coming to Ghent from Brussels, hop on the train at Brussel-Centraal and wait until the last stop where you’ll get off at Gent-Sint-Pieters. The entire journey roughly takes about 37 minutes.

If you’re coming to Ghent from Bruges, similarly you’ll just get on the train at Brugge Station and stay on until you reach Gent-Sint-Pieters approximately 30 minutes later.

If you’re coming from outside of Belgium, consider booking a train on the Eurail ! They offer thousands of different routes across Europe and can get you to Ghent in no time. But, be sure to take a look at what flights are available prior to booking if you’re traveling a long distance to Belgium.

You can occasionally find great deals on both domestic and international flights in Europe that will save you a lot of time in comparison to taking the train.

Of course, if you’re already in Belgium, the train will be the fastest and most efficient method of transportation if you don’t plan on renting a car (not usually recommended in Europe).

How to Get Around Ghent for One Day

Walking and biking are the best methods of transportation if you only have one day in Ghent

Since the city is covered in mainly cobblestone streets, thousands of pedestrians, and is divided by one-way streets and rivers, driving through Ghent can be a bit of a nightmare . Luckily for you, you won’t need to worry about renting a car over your one day in Ghent.

The city is easily walkable and you’ll find that most people (tourists and locals) get around by either walking or biking everywhere. For further destinations, the city’s public transportation system will get you there.

Affordable buses and trams line the city center and can bring you everywhere including the Gravensteen Castle, and more.

Since you’ll be short on time, consider renting a bike for a few hours to get you around to all of the main attractions quickly. Then, when you want to head to the Castle, hop on the tram!

This way, you’ll be able to fit in everything you want to see in Ghent in one day, and you’ll still have plenty of time left over for enjoying the local cafes, bars, and restaurants in the evening.

Tips for Visiting Ghent

Before jetting off to the airport, learn about these practical tips for your one day in Ghent itinerary

Even if you have visited Ghent before, there are a few useful tips below that you may just find helpful to planning your next one day in Ghent itinerary! And if you haven’t, be sure to read through these tips before jetting off to the airport.

✔️ Belgium uses the Euro and many people can speak Dutch, French, German, and English!

It isn’t uncommon to hear conversations happening in several different languages around you at any given time, so consider learning a few phrases in at least one of the aforementioned languages if you can.

✔️ Since you’ll be spending the majority of your day walking or biking around the city, be sure to pack a comfortable pair of walking shoes !

This one is key to a fun day in Ghent (nobody likes blisters while sightseeing!)

✔️ Also, depending on how much money you plan to budget for your trip, you may want to consider eating at smaller cafes or getting food on-the-go to save some money.

Ghent’s restaurants, especially in the historic center and along the Leie River, are typically quite expensive.

You can occasionally find a good deal, however, most of the time you’ll notice appetizers and entrees ranging between €20- €30 each. With the addition of a round or two of beers, it isn’t uncommon to go over €100 for two people even at lunch!

✔️ Lastly, unless you plan on completing an entirely self-guided Belgium tour, avoid renting a car .

This can become quite costly and owing to Ghent’s pedestrian-only streets and numerous one-ways, it usually becomes more of a headache than anything to have a car rental in Ghent.

Instead, opt for a combination of walking, biking, and public transportation to aid you in getting around the city! This will save you a considerable amount of money and a lot of stress in the long run.

What to Eat in Ghent, Belgium

These are the best foods to try during one day in Ghent

Did you know that the Belgian waffle actually originated in Ghent ? Well, you do now, so it goes without saying that one of these sweet delicacies is a must when you are in town.

But, what else? Of course, Belgium is known for its luxurious chocolate and soft, chewy waffles, but what else should you try on your one day in Ghent? Let me show you!

Belgians aren’t just known for their dessert crafting skills, but also for their rich and savory meals that date back for centuries… but, now with a modern twist . Below are some of the best local dishes that you should try during your time in Ghent…

✔️ Stoverij – This Flemish recipe local to Ghent is a popular favorite among the locals. Authentically made with dark beer or stouts, this hearty stew is full of tender beef and simmered until a thick, savory broth is created. Often served with freshly made fries, this is the ultimate food for your soul!

✔️ Tierenteyn Mustard – this special condiment dates back to the 18 th -century and is well known in Ghent for its distinctly bright and tangy taste. Made from specially ground dark mustard seeds without the addition of preservatives, this unique sauce makes for a wonderful addition to any rich meal.

✔️ Mastel – this traditional bread also originated in Ghent and is known for its sweet, caramelized center. The bread has a denser texture than most and is often sliced, covered in butter and brown sugar, then laid on a hot griddle creating the most wonderful caramel flavor.

Where to Stay in Ghent

Check out these neighborhoods before deciding where to stay for one day in Ghent

I previously told you about some of the best neighborhoods to check out in Ghent, but what about where to stay? Especially if you only have one day, choosing a central accommodation that’s both charming and affordable can be difficult.

But, luckily for you, I have already done all of the work for you! Check out my preferred accommodations below where I have laid out the best places to stay in Ghent based on your travel style.

Day Trips to Ghent

Day trip from brussels to ghent.

ghent day tours

You might be wondering, “how far is Ghent from Brussels?” and “can I visit Ghent in one day from Brussels?”. If so, you’ve come to the right place!

Ghent is a mere 37-minute train ride from Brussels, so yes, you can easily wake up in Brussels and hop on the train to Ghent for the day before returning back to your accommodation in Brussels in the evening.

But, you may not want to! Many travelers regret this decision when they come to find how unique and charming Ghent is and wish they had planned to stay at least one night in the medieval city.

If you’re able to squeeze a day trip from Brussels to Ghent into your Belgium itinerary, consider booking at least one night in Ghent!

Day Trip from Bruges to Ghent

ghent day tours

Opposite Brussels is the medieval capital of Bruges which is known for its extravagant, gothic architecture, and its mysterious, windy canals that cut through the city in random patterns.

If you’re already in Bruges, consider hopping on a quick 30-minute train ride to Ghent where you’ll be rewarded with similar, yet more vibrantly-colored, buildings and rivers.

These two Belgian cities are a classic pairing owing to their unique similarities and close proximity to one another. If you’re considering taking a day trip from Bruges to Ghent, I highly suggest that you do!

FAQ: One Day in Ghent

Is ghent belgium worth visiting for one day.

Ghent is absolutely worth visiting even if you only have on day

Even though you may be short on time, visiting Ghent is absolutely worth just a quick visit. The town is overflowing with charm and character, so it would be a shame to not take advantage of this incredible Belgian place!

It’s also easily accessible from both the capital of Brussels or the medieval town of Bruges in well under an hour, so you could even visit Ghent for less than one day if that’s all the time you had.

Ghent is overflowing with history (take the torture chamber in Gravensteen Castle, for example), charm, and spectacular cuisine and while I can’t promise that you’ll be happy you chose to visit, I do believe that there is a very good chance you’ll be pleased!

Is One Day Enough in Ghent?

One day in Ghent is plenty of time to see all of the best sights and attractions

One day in Ghent is certainly enough time to spend there. The city is on the smaller side and extremely walkable , so it won’t take you a long time to get between most sights and attractions.

But, if you or someone you are traveling with would prefer to include a half or full-day trip to the Gravensteen Castle, then one day may not be enough for you.

Likewise, if you typically enjoy exploring interesting art collections and the exhibitions in the local museums when you travel.

So, if you prefer to include plenty of time at each attraction, want to spend an ample amount of time at the Gravensteen Castle, and would like to fit in some time for simply relaxing at a riverside cafe, then one day in Ghent may not be enough time for you.

However, even if you only have one day to explore Ghent, don’t fret. You will still be able to fit in many of the main sights, attractions, and some time at a cafe or two!

When is the Best Time to Visit Ghent?

Especially if you only have one day in Ghent, be sure to visit in the shoulder seasons

Ghent, Belgium is a breathtaking city to visit year-round, but there are a few times of the year that we prefer over the others.

For instance, our favorite time to visit Ghent (and Belgium, for that matter) is in the shoulder seasons of spring and fall!

We find this to be when the weather is still comfortable (though there is a slightly higher chance of rain), most of the tourist prices for accommodations and flights have dropped significantly, and many of the tourists have left the city.

In the spring months of April through June, you’ll find thousands of blooming flowers creating a beautiful, vibrant cityscape. In the fall months of September through November , the fall foliage begins and all of the leaves turn gorgeous colors like yellow, orange, and red!

While the summers in Ghent are beautiful, they are relatively hot, flooded with tourists, and it’s also quite expensive to visit during this time, as well. Not to mention that you’ll be waiting in long lines for the major attractions and at most restaurants throughout the city.

The winters in Ghent are also beautiful! You can enjoy ice skating and holiday markets and even the occasional snowfall, however, Belgium gets very few daylight hours in the winters so you better also enjoy curling up in front of a toasty fireplace with a glass of mulled wine.

All in all, the best time to visit Ghent is in the spring and fall when you can get a balance of reduced pricing, fewer tourists, more locals, good weather (for Belgium, at least), and all the comforts of having the city to yourself!

Can You Do Bruges and Ghent in One Day?

If you have one day in Ghent, you can always include a few hours in Bruges, as well!

Since these two medieval Belgian cities are so close to one another via train, you can easily travel to both Bruges and Ghent in one day.

They also have many similarities making them a great combination for a day trip! From their canals and gothic architecture to the food and the people, you’ll find many connections between the two.

However, even though the two cities are close to one another, whether you have enough time or not to see everything is entirely dependent on your travel style .

While I enjoy squeezing as much into my travel days as possible, many people do not… and that’s okay!

If you like to take your time when visiting a new place, you may feel rushed trying to see both Bruges and Ghent in one day. But, if you don’t mind skipping some of the smaller attractions or only seeing the main sights in each city, then one day in Bruges and Ghent is enough time!

Is Bruges or Ghent Better?

ghent day tours

In my personal opinion, I enjoyed Bruges more, however, both cities offer a healthy dose of charm, history, and Belgian culture. Bruges, with its fairy-tale medieval architecture and picturesque canals, is like stepping into a time machine set to the Middle Ages.

Ghent, on the other hand, boasts a lively, modern vibe without losing its historical roots. Its vibrant nightlife, contemporary art scene, and student population lend it an energetic atmosphere.

When visiting small, Belgian towns, I felt like Bruges hit the nail on the head in terms of a real-life fairytale, but you may find Ghent’s trendy neighborhoods to be more your style.

How Many Days in Ghent?

Ghent might be one of Belgium’s most underrated cities. Most tourists head straight for Brussels or Bruges without stopping in to explore everything that Ghent has to offer. One of the most common ways to see this city is by taking a day trip from Brussels to Ghent.

In one day, you can see most of the major highlights without feeling like you have to be constantly moving. A short train ride from Brussels means you have the vast majority of the day for your trip. There are several trains per day, so you can also be flexible with your arrival and departure times.

If you decide to spend 2 days in Ghent, you can dig a little deeper into the city’s history and attractions. You can visit a smaller, local museum or take a boat ride on the canal.

No matter how long you spend in Ghent, make sure to save time to try delicious local chocolate and Belgian waffles.

To determine how many days to spend in Ghent, make a list of everything you want to do in the city. Ask yourself what you can realistically see at the pace you enjoy traveling then begin constructing an itinerary from there.

Old Town of Ghent

Getting To & Around Ghent

Luckily, Ghent is very easy to access from Brussels by train. It’s a short 30-minute train ride from Brussels to Ghent, and there are several trains per day. You can book trains in advance here .

If you prefer to go on a tour there are several options for an organised Ghent day trip from Brussels. This full-day tour takes you to both Ghent & Bruges while this tour takes you to Antwerp & Ghent.

Once you arrive, getting around is equally easy. If you are visiting Ghent in one day, most of the highlights you’ll see are within walking distance of each other. Plus, exploring this city by foot means you also get to experience all the charm of its architecture, cobblestone streets, and narrow alleys that make Ghent so endearing.

If you prefer to use public transportation in Ghent, the bus is a good option. With the CityCard Ghent , you can ride all the trams and buses without paying the extra fee when you purchase a per-ride ticket. However, this might not make the most sense if you’re only spending one day in Ghent.

Alternatively, you can use the ticket machine at the tram or bus stop to purchase your ticket. Contactless payment is available on the buses and trams using a credit or debit card, smartphone, or smartwatch. You can also use rideshares and taxis to get around Ghent.

Finally, if you find yourself interested in exploring Ghent like a local, consider renting a bike for a few hours to peddle around the city. Biking is a very popular way to navigate the city, so you’ll see bike racks posted outside many local shops and restaurants.

You can even organise a bike tour if you want to learn more about the history at the same time! That said, keep an eye out for bikers as you’re walking around Ghent.

Walking along Graslei

1-Day Ghent Itinerary

Spending a day exploring Ghent will be a day well spent. Here is everything you should add to your trip.

Walk along Graslei and Korenlei

The Graslei and Korenlei are the two walking paths on either side of the canal that carves their way through the city. Casually strolling along the canal bank is a great introduction to sightseeing in Ghent. On nice evenings, you’ll see locals sitting on the banks enjoying their time.

It’s also the place to be for stunning views of Ghent lit up after dark. The Graslei and Korenlei meet up at St. Michael’s Bridge, another great place for an iconic view of Ghent.

Consider grabbing a cup of coffee and pastry from a local coffee shop to sip and snack as you walk along the canal and soak up the exquisite architecture of Ghent. If you want to get a unique vantage point, you can also organise a short boat ride along the canals.

Visit the Gravensteen Castle

How many medieval castles are located in the center of European cities? There aren’t many, but the Gravensteen Castle is one of them. Also known as the Castle of the Counts, the Gravensteen Castle was the residence of the Counts of Flanders between 1180 and 1353.

Today, the castle is a central landmark in Ghent and invites visitors to enter its towering wall for a deep dive into its rocky history. You can purchase tickets at the entrance, where you can also opt in for the audio guide and to pay a visit to a torture museum.

A visit to the castle is a must for your itinerary and is one of the top things to do in Ghent.

Gravensteen Castle

Explore St. Nicolas’ Church

St. Nicolas’ Church is one of the oldest (and coolest) sites in Ghent. Construction began in the early 13th century and continued for nearly 100 years. It’s built in the Scheldt Gothic style, which is an architectural style you’ll see in many prominent buildings throughout Ghent.

The church is located right next to St. Michael’s Bridge and opens at 10 AM, so stop in for a quick tour before the afternoon crowds arrive. It’s a great place to pause before or after a walk along the canal.

Climb the Ghent Belfry

Of the three towers that stand out on the Ghent skyline, the Belfry Tower is the most eye-catching. The tower itself is 91 meters tall and visitors can climb to the top for an unbeatable view of Ghent.

It was constructed in 1313 and many of the original art, sculptures, and statues still remain in the belfry. Inside, you can watch a video to learn about the history of bell making, see the belfry’s most famous bell named Roland, and enjoy the historic artwork.

A visit to this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a must-see for your 24 hours in Ghent itinerary.

View from Ghent Belfry

Wander the streets of Ghent

One of the best ways to see Ghent is on foot, especially because the neighborhood streets of Ghent are filled with creative street art. One of the most famous neighborhoods to set out in is the Patershol. Here, narrow cobblestone streets with brick buildings on either side dominate.

Many years ago, the Patershol was considered a rougher neighborhood in Ghent. However, today it’s one of the most creative and artsy areas full of hidden restaurants and bars. It’s located near the Gravensteen, so stop in after you visit the castle.

Patershol is a great area to explore if you’re looking to get away from the tourist-packed areas.

Taste all the treats

Famous in Ghent are ‘Cuberdons’, also known as ‘red noses’, that can be purchased in sweet shops or from carts in more popular areas of the city. These tasty little candies are delicious. Your visit to Ghent would be incomplete without a Belgian waffle.

You’ve probably had a Belgian waffle before, but not like this. These sweet, fluffy, and mouth-watering waffles are staples of the country. Get yours smothered in chocolate or topped with more unique local flavor.

You must try Belgian chocolate during your visit. There are several chocolate shops throughout Ghent where you can sample some of the most delicious chocolate ever. Make sure to indulge in your sweet tooth while in Ghent. You can also organise a tour to learn more about chocolate making in Ghent!

If you don’t have much of a sweet tooth, you can consider a food tour of the city instead.

Cuberdons

Have More Time?

If you have 2 days in Ghent, you can expand your trip to encompass some of the city’s lesser-known sites. You could also choose to stick to the highlights, but take them at a more leisurely pace.

When seeing Ghent in 2 days, make sure to add a canal boat ride to your itinerary. There are several options for seeing Ghent from the canal, but the view is stunning. Tours will provide historical and cultural context for the landmarks you see from the water.

If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can rent a canoe or kayak to explore parts of the canals and rivers of Ghent on your own.

When you’re back on dry land, pay a visit to Saint Bavo’s Cathedral. This cathedral is one of the three that stand out on the Ghent skyline. Standing at 89 meters tall, Saint Bavo’s Cathedral is where the Diocese of Ghent resides.

It boasts the same gothic architecture style that you’ll see across Ghent. Construction began around 1275 with several modifications and additions taking place between the 14th and 16th Centuries. Today, visitors are welcome to explore the cathedral – where you can see the incredible Ghent Altarpiece – at their leisure.

Finally, if you have 2 days to spend in Ghent, visit some of the museums the city is known for. Art and history fans alike will be able to find a museum to suit their interests. The city’s museum of fine arts, MSK, houses in-depth collections of classic artists and modernists from Belgium’s creative history.

Those curious to learn more about the history of Ghent should visit the STAM. The museum traces Ghent’s history from a medieval trading town to the modern city it is today. It also features a room that has a giant map of Ghent projected on the ground that visitors love.

Finally, the most well-known museum in Ghent is the S.M.A.K., the contemporary art museum. It is where you can find some of Belgium’s most famous and impressive pieces of modern contemporary art–some that might even leave you scratching your head.

If you want to plan a Ghent itinerary that includes museums, remember that most museums in Ghent are closed on Mondays.

Hold up! Have you thought about the importance of travel insurance?

Remember this:  anything can happen. Travel is fun, but your health is more important; thus, I always, always, always recommend getting insured during the duration of your trip. I have benefitted from having one multiple times, and it has been covered for thousands of euros!

The latest one is not necessarily “health” related – it was during the peak of the unspeakable terrible C that consumed the world. I was living in Vietnam when I received an email from SafetyWing (my travel insurance) that if I want they’ll fly be back home to Finland as the world goes through a global emergency alert. I flew back fully covered, and dealing with  SafetyWing  was a breeze despite the roar of people in contact with them trying to get back home.

I can’t highly recommend them enough. Otherwise, I rarely get sick; hence I don’t always need to head to a hospital, but knowing that I have travel insurance makes me feel safe at the very least.

Read my post about  why you should get travel insurance  for more information. Otherwise, you can get a free quote from  SafetyWing  – they’re the best, in my opinion.

top day trips from ghent belgium de haan

De Haan is a coastal village known for its low skyline. Most of the buildings here are visible prominently. The town has an 18-hole golf course founded by King Leopold II in 1903. It is the only link course in Belgium. Albert Einstein lived in the most famous villa, Savoyarde, for six months after leaving Germany .

It is a beach resort in West Flanders, on the sea coast of Belgium. It has maintained the old-world charm of the 1930s thanks to its strict and smart real estate norms. top day trips from ghent belgium leuven

Leuven is a lively and prosperous town with more than 100,000 residents. It is the capital of Flemish Brabant, a Belgian province. It is the typical university capital which is reflected in the streets. The city has no lack of young people during the academic year, especially on weekends.

The city has an impressive long-back history since it was founded in the 9th century. It was quite extraordinary due to the Dilje River location and Brussel’s proximity. Most of the city was burned and ruined by the German invasion in the First World War. It was also damaged during the Second World War.

The historic center has been preserved well, and monumental buildings have been recovered, such as the University Library , partly because of foreign relief funds.

Leuven has the Province Building and a range of administrative services, where the provincial council is positioned. It is known for the beer and technology industry.

The Grand Beguinage “Groot Begijnhof” is one of UNESCO’s most amazing World Heritage Sites. St. Peter’s Church is another major attraction, and its belfry is a part of the Belfries of France and Belgium.

What are my favorite travel must-haves?

As a frequent traveler, I’ve learned a lot throughout my years of travel, and there are five items that I always carry with me regardless of where I go and how long the trip is. Here are my five travel must-haves!

  • Warm packable jacket  – I always carry a light jacket, even when heading to warm countries. There hasn’t been a time I never used it, especially in airports and planes.
  • Transparent toiletry bag  – I often bring a carry-on if I’m only traveling within Europe for a few days. Life is so much easier to go through security checks with a transparent toiletry bag.
  • Kindle Paperwhite  – I love a good read and always take my Kindle everywhere. It keeps me entertained during long flights and waiting times.
  • Powerbank  – I don’t know how I could travel without one! Having a power bank saved me a ton since I carry a lot of electronic devices with me.
  • Travel Adapter  – I never leave my luggage without a travel adapter! I carry one with me all the time. It is just one of that travel-must haves that doesn’t hurt to have in your bag at all times.
