Our bestselling cycle tours in Germany

The Free State of Bavaria needs no introduction. Everyone knows the Alpine region and feels right at home. It’s no wonder that many of our most popular cycle tours are located in Bavaria. Of course, Munich and the surrounding area play an important role.

Main Cycle Path

The little brother of the Rhine – we’re of course talking about the Main. It plays a major role at Eurobike and is by no means in its big brother’s shadow. Cycle tours like Bayreuth - Mainz or the Main Vintner's Tour are just one example of the wonderful cycle tours along the Main.

View of the town and the castle of Miltenberg situated on the River Main

The beautiful rivers, which are so wonderful to cycle along, are especially attractive for cyclists in central Germany. This idyllic image is accompanied by enchanting castles and palaces, which are very common in this area, as well as picturesque vineyards. A bike holiday in central Germany promises a lot of rest and valuable time to yourself.

Secluded beaches on the rough Baltic Sea, dreamy fishing villages, thatched houses and modern cities await the cyclist in northern Germany. On almost perfect cycle paths you reach one highlight after the last.

The climate in germany.

Like the cuisine, the climate in Germany varies! Overall, it is incredibly difficult to make a forecast of the weather across the country. Various climatic zones meet here. From the mountainous climate of the Alps, to the continental climate on the south-east of Germany and on to the maritime north you will find all weather.

Grapes in the Palatinate

German Cuisine

You can’t lump German food together. It is as diverse as Germany herself. The hearty Bavarian cuisine is more similar to that in Austria. ‘Thüringer Klöße’ (dumplings), ‘Köningsberger Klopse’ (meatballs with white sauce) or ‘Kohlrouladen’ (cabbage rolls) are just a few examples of central German cuisine. And what is being served in northern Germany? Fish is of course high on the list, as is potato salad, kale, turnip and beetroot.

Did you know...

  • that the most popular attraction in Germany is the Cologne Cathedral?
  • that, measured by the number of club members, fitness is the favourite sport in Germany – not football!
  • that Berlin Zoo is the largest in the world?
  • that Germany is one of the few countries where a jailbreak is not illegal, but also not without consequences?
  • that 10 tonnes of bird droppings fall from the sky every day in Berlin?
  • that more beer is brewed in Dortmund than in Munich?

Berlinish or Bavarian

Germany is diverse and varied, also when it comes to its culture and language or dialects: listen to Low German on your cycle tour through the north, it has been recognised as a language in its own right and included in the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages. In Bavaria you will encounter Franconian and Bavarian dialects, yo mei. Perhaps you'd like to babble Hessian , chat Swabian or experience a real Berliner Schnauze, eh? Et kütt, wie et kütt, they say in Kölsch. So let's see what regional specialities you will discover, because there are not only linguistic but also cultural differences.

The most beautiful biketrails in Germany and Europe

On our biketours you will encounter hares and deer and no exhaust fumes! The routes are planned extremely carefully by our own experts and precisely documented by legend texts and GPX tracks. The selection of the biketour routes is subject to high standards. They must include cultural sights and the beauty of the landscape. Traffic-free forest and meadow paths and routes on minor roads are always preferred. Low-traffic secondary roads are included only when necessary. On our cycling tours we provide you with the terranova  touring-bike or  the terranova Ebike. Our bikes got developed by us in close cooperation with the bicycle industry for the special needs of bicycle touring. The careful and regular maintenance of our bicycles is carried out in our own workshop under professional supervision. The criteria for the specification of our bicycles are their safety and comfort for the guest.

Look forward to excitingly conveyed culture and history

Cuisine, art and winecellars we will introduce to you on all our bicycle tours. The itinerary of our cycling routes are based on the culturally significant places of the regions. Therefore, the visit and explanation of these places and their history are an important part of all our trips.  Guided tours with local certified experts in mportant buildings, places and monuments are always part of our guided biketours. Our guests do not want to travel as a "herd"! A manageable number of participants increases the cycling pleasure, it promotes better understanding during guided tours and it makes individual cycling guests out of "group members". That is why the number of guests on our group tours is limited. The average number of guests per bike tour is 10.

The careful selection of accommodation during our biketours

The selection of our hotelpartners is made with special consideration of their unique features: Atmosphere, comfort, location and cuisine. The hotels and their special features are an important part of the terranova bicycle travel experience. Hotels with historical and regional ambience are preferred over houses with only functional facilities. Anywhere you rest up has been vetted by a member of our team, and the relationships we’ve nurtured with hoteliers means you always get preferential treatment.

Bicycling is a huge part of German culture– Karl von Drais invented the first pushbike over 175 years ago and you will rarely encounter a German who did not grow up riding a bike and/or still does. Experience Germany’s storybook landscape the way the Germans do and take pleasure in the sights and sounds.

The baroque city of Würzburg boasts over 100 hundred churches that have endured the years and range in style from gothic, renaissance, baroque to modern. The four towered St. Kilian cathedral, one of the largest Romanesque churches in Germany, is an incredible sight to see. This city is also famous for being the center of Franconian wine production. One large vineyard, the “Burgerspital-Weingut zum Heiligen Geist,” is believed to have been the birthplace of the flat, pouch–shaped bottle that is the hallmark of Franconian wine.

Of course Germany is known for its beer but both wine and beer pair well with German cuisine which is experiencing a movement towards light, more regional expressions of flavor. Like in the south, near the Alps, where crusty Braten, wonderful brown breads and Wurst are popular and delicious.

Germany offers castles with Rapunzel-like towers, quaint sidewalk cafes, sprawling vineyards and centuries old moss-covered stone bridges. Its visions of scenes like these that bring so many visitors to the historic towns and villages of Germany and what better way to explore this country than on a bike.

Cycling holidays in Germany

Cycling in germany.

Cycle paths of all levels of difficulty, vast landscapes and majestic mountains, Germany has it all. Cycletours Holidays offers you cycling holidays along her idyllic waterways.

You can choose between bike and barge tours along the Rhine from Amsterdam to Koblenz , Aschaffenburg to/from Bamberg or along the Main, Rhine and Mosel. If  you prefer cycling through the vineyards you can chose the tours along the Moselle and Saar ? Staying on the cozy barge Zwaan and cycling midweek along the Maare-Mosel cycle path to discover the Eifel. Some will prefer to travel to the the south of Germany. They will enjoy cycling along the Danube, but they still have to choose between guided and self-guided and staying in hotels or on a ship. All choices will have the same outcome: a great cycling holiday!

Maare-Mosel-Cycletour

Bike and boat, danube cycle path, bike and hotel.

This thoroughly enjoyable cycle tour begins in Daun, in the heart of the UNESCO Volcanic Eifel nature park and geopark - very near the famous maars. The route runs between Daun and Bernkastel-Kues along a disused railway track, with almost no ascents, and with all the attractions along the way is ideal for cyclists looking for a leisurely tour. The tour winds downhill to the vineyards of the Moselle river, over viaducts and bridges, through tunnels and forests in the Eifel, past the maars and extinct volcanoes. Join our tours along the Moselle and Saar and find out yourself!

Bike and boat in Germany

The German waterways as the Moselle, Saar, Rhine, Main and Danube make the country ideal for bike and barge holidays.

If you would like to book a cycling holiday, but you cannot escape your fascination of water, then we have something very special in store for you: bike and boat  holidays! There’s a reason these trips are so popular: the very special atmosphere on board enchants even the landlubbers among you. The ship acts as a comfortable hotel, that swims alongside you, and as an exquisite restaurant. Re-pack your suitcase? This is not necessary on these cycling trips. You can join our tour along the Moselle and Saar or vice versa; Aschaffenburg to/from Bamberg or along the Main, Rhine and Mosel on our barge the Zwaan. The Zwaan only has 7 cabins. The cozy atmosphere and small group (max. 14 persons) makes this one of our highest valued tours.  If you ever want to cycle along the Danube, then you can hop on board the MS Swiss Crown on the cycle route  Passau – Vienna – Passau  or check in on the MS Vivienne or MS Swiss Crown and discover the route  Passau – Budapest – Passau . These ships are larger river cruise ships for more than 100 people. The guided cycle groups are approx. 22 people.

The most famous bike route in Europe is the Danube cycle path. From the river's source in Germany down to the Black Sea it is about 1,800 miles. On it's way, the Danube crosses half of Europe. As a cyclist, you are most probably interested in the Danube's course through Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary.  One of the highlights on the Danube cycle path is the stage from Passau to Vienna . If you want to visit 3 capitals in a week we recommend the stage from Vienna (Austria) through the Slovakian capital Bratislava and to end in Budapest (Hungary).

Bike and hotel tours

Cycletours Holidays offers three hotel and bike tours. Two tours along the Danube cycling path and one along the Lake Constance.

Our cycling holiday  Lake Constance  is one of the best bike tours to book for inexperienced cyclists, because it is mainly flat cycling on a bike path. You will cycle in 3 countries during the cycle tour:  Germany , Austria and Switzerland . Along the Danube cycling path you can cycle in 14 days from Passau to Budapest or choose to cycle in 8 days from Passau to Vienna . In your trip package of these self-guided tours are all our servcices included: bicycle or e-bike rental, route descriptions, luggage transport and service hotline. Idyllic treasures

Idyllic treasures

Rhine bike tours.

Inspiring imperial cathedrals and ancient, majestic castles are just part of the thousands of years of history you’ll witness along Germany’s longest river. The 820-mile-long Rhine begins in the Swiss Alps and winds its way through Germany before emptying its waters into the North Sea. Densely packed with cultural treasures, spas, and the biggest German wine-growing area, this region is what tourists imagine when they think “Germany.” Cycling in the Rhine River region is made easy with the miles of well-marked, dedicated bike paths and country roads with minimal traffic. Rolling hills and mainly flat terrain make it popular for families, first-timers, and skilled cyclists. The Rhine River Valley enjoys long summers with warm temperatures cooled by river breezes. Late spring and early autumn are also ideal times to visit.

Often family run, these charming hotels range from 2 to 4 stars and provide access to local living thanks to your hosts. The hospitality is generous and their local knowledge is invaluable. Where possible, we choose locations that add to your experience.

Think of it as your floating hotel, where each day you experience a different sunrise and sunset location and you unpack only once. Berths range from two lower or bunk bed style but can be upgraded to larger berths with double beds. The bar and dining area is always a popular hangout at the end of each day's activity. The crew includes an onboard cook.

Refuges or gite hostels

Used mainly on mountain walks, these convivial places add to the atmosphere of your journey through the mountains. Dorms may sleep up to 40 people and the beds are often bunk beds. Linen and blankets are provided and bathrooms are shared. Private rooms may be available, although private gite rooms still use shared bathrooms.

Bed & breakfasts (B&Bs)

Simple yet rich in local character, the B&Bs chosen are clean, comfortable and run by hosts that help add to your experience.

Guesthouses

Similar to bed & breakfasts, these family-owned accommodations are clean and comfortable. Rooms with en suites generally have a shower but no bath due to space. There may be a separate room with a bath tub.

Despite its size, the majority of Germany has a moderate continental climate, with little variation from north to south. Temperatures range between 5-18 degrees Celsius (41-64 degrees Fahrenheit) in spring and autumn, and 15-25 degrees Celsius (59-77 degrees Fahrenheit) in summer (sometimes higher). You should however be prepared for temperature variations up to 38 degrees and down to 10 degrees, even in the middle of summer. It is important to take enough water with you and drink regularly through the day.

The walking season in the European Alps is short – from June to September and many of the mountain huts are closed outside this time. Temperatures in summer range from around 6 degrees Celsius to 20 degrees Celsius during the day. Afternoon thunderstorms are quite common. At the higher elevations it is important to dress with layers as cold winds and possible snow falls can happen even in summer.

Please refer to your trip for specific information about climate.

Get out of the city and into nature: 8 tour tips

Woods and moors, meadow orchards and vineyards: in Germany, nature is usually just a stone's throw away from the city centre. Experience the fascinating contrast between the city and surroundings on these bike tours.

Nature Tour Bremerhaven: between the Weser and Lune

Bremerhaven: New harbour with the Klimahaus and the German Emigration Museum

Lapwings and golden plovers, kingfishers, dragonflies and water buffalo: the Luneplate nature conservation area is home to a diverse fauna. The flat coastal landscape between the mouth of the Weser and the Lune river is the destination of the 34-kilometre Nature Tour around Bremerhaven. Pack a picnic and enjoy a relaxed meal along the way.

Potsdam: circumnavigating Templiner See

Bicycles on the banks of the Havel

Baroque splendour with a lake view: with its parks on the bank of the Templiner See, the setting of Caputh Palace is truly idyllic. Albert Einstein's former summer house is just around the corner. The 20-kilometre bike path around Templiner See near Potsdam is defined by the juxtaposition of culture and nature. Along the way, attractions include small bays that are perfect for bathing, as well as a ferry crossing.

Münster: from castle to castle

Muenster: Moated castle Huelshoff with Droste-Museum and Center for Literature

More than 400,000 bicycles for a population of 310,000 – Münster once again claimed the title of Germany's bicycle capital in 2023. So hop on a bike and explore the excellent infrastructure, for instance on the 34-kilometre circular trail from Münster Castle into its idyllic surroundings. Visit the Hülshoff moated castle along the way – where you can order a picnic basket packed with regional specialities.

Leipzig: Neuseenland Cycle Route

Leipzig: three cyclists on the Neuseenland cycle route

Nine bodies of water, including Lake Cospuden and Lake Kulkwitz, line the nearly 100-kilometre-long Neuseenland Cycle Route to the south of Leipzig. All of them were created as part of landscape recultivation in the former open-cast lignite mine. Today you can go swimming here, get active in the canoe park, spend the night at the lakeside or explore historic sites such as Borna.

Greifswald: Route of North German Romanticism

Greifswald: Riems Island in the Greifswald Bodden

Romanticism was defined by painters, poets and writers, notably Caspar David Friedrich and Philipp Otto Runge. Follow the trail of four great artists on the 54-kilometre Route of North German Romanticism between Greifswald and Wolgast – and enjoy views over the Bay of Greifswald along the way. Take the train back to your starting point after the tour.

Saarbrücken: Saarkohlenwald Loop

Saarbrücken: Old bridge with old town in the background

Industrial monuments from mining days of the past alternate with secluded forest landscapes, making the 80-kilometre-long Saarkohlenwald Loop perfect for a diverting day trip. Immerse yourself in Earth history at the GONDWANA adventure park, marvel at the natural phenomenon of the Burning Mountain just like Goethe once did and stop at cosy guesthouses.

Baden-Baden: tour to the summit of the Badener Höhe

Freudenstadt: Friedrich Tower on the Baden Heights

Nearly 1,500 metres in altitude over a distance of 60 kilometres: if you want to really let off steam on a mountain bike trip in between pleasant treatments at the Baden-Baden health resort, the summit tour is the one for you. This challenging tour passes Yburg Castle at an elevation of more than 1,000 metres. Cosy taverns invite you to sample regional specialities along the way.

Passau: on the sparkling course of the Inn

Passau: Danube river with city view

They meet at the three-river triangle in Passau: the Ilz with its dark water, the Danube in blue-brown and the green of the Inn. An enjoyable tour follows the course of the Inn for about 30 kilometres until it joins the Danube. If you get hungry for more along the way, you can follow the Inn for more than 500 kilometres in Germany.

Tour de Hongrie: Thibau Nys hangs on for overall victory as Poels wins stage 5

Dutchman takes first win of the season on uphill finish to Pécs

Thibau Nys (Lidl-Trek)

Thibau Nys (Lidl-Trek) defended brilliantly to claim overall victory at the Tour de Hongrie as Wout Poels won stage 5 after a brutally tough uphill finale into Pécs.

After his two back-to-back stage wins, Nys marked moves and emptied the tank to defend his yellow jersey, holding off attacks from Marc Hirschi (UAE Team Emirates) and Emanuel Buchmann (Bora-Hansgrohe).

The German champion animated much of the finale with Nys and Callum Scotson (Jayco AlUla) following, but it was Poels who bridged to the leading quartet in the final kilometre before out-sprinting all of them to the line.

This was Poels’ first win in 2024 and Nys’ first-ever stage race victory, with the 21-year-old rider holding onto a 12 second margin to his nearest GC rival. “It was a super hard final, I had a really good feeling from the beginning of the race already. I felt pretty strong. On the first time Pécs was really hard and I started to suffer more than I predicted, but then the second time was already better and I felt that I recovered really good from the climb and the efforts," said Nys.

"In the end I’m actually disappointed I didn’t win a third stage, but I was a bit too much with my head looking to the GC and I didn’t want to leave any gaps, and that’s where I think I lost the stage today, but the GC was more important. I’m super happy, it’s been an incredible week.”

The strong efforts of Buchmann and Poels saw them move up to the podium while Diego Ulissi (UAE Team Emirates) went from second overall to fourth, ending up just one second behind Buchmann on the GC after coming sixth on the final stage. His teammate Hirschi was fifth overall.

NAPLES, Italy (AP) — Dutch cyclist Olav Kooij won a bunch sprint for a stage victory on his grand tour debut while Tadej Pogacar maintained his considerable lead after the ninth stage of the Giro d’Italia on Sunday.

Kooij, who rides for Visma-Lease a Bike, edged Jonathan Milan by half a wheel at the end of the 214-kilometer (133-mile) route from Avezzano to Napoli – the second longest day of this Giro. Juan Sebastian Molano was third.

It was a 33rd professional win for the 22-year-old Kooij.

“I was really looking forward to my first grand tour,” Kooij said, adding that despite his previous wins “this one is really one I was dreaming of.”

Jhonatan Narvaez had seemed set for victory after making his move with 7.7 kilometers remaining and he had a gap of 12 seconds heading into the final kilometer.

But, with Pogacar leading a charging peloton for his own fast man Molano, Narvaez was caught just 50 meters from the line.

Milan launched his sprint but he was edged at the line by Kooij.

It had been expected to be a day for the breakaway but only two riders went clear right at the start. Polti–Kometa teammates Mirco Maestri and Andrea Pietrobon had a long and lonely day up front before they were caught with 24 kilometers remaining.

Pogacar remained 2 minutes, 40 seconds ahead of Daniel Martinez overall. Last year’s runner-up Geraint Thomas was 2:58 behind.

“It’s a comfortable gap to go to the rest day, I’m really looking forward for (an) easy day tomorrow,” Pogacar said. “Just relax and try to not think about the race for one day, but it is going to be hard.”

Monday sees the race’s first rest day before a short but difficult leg. Tuesday’s 10th stage starts in Pompei and is just 142 kilometers (88 miles) but features a second-category climb in the middle before the top-classified climb to the finish at Cusano Mutri.

“It’s good to be for rest day in Napoli and let’s hope for some good pizza and good cappuccino,” Pogacar said.

The Giro ends in Rome on May 26.

Five Boro Bike Tour takes over NYC. Here's why over 32,000 cyclists from around the world rode 40 miles.

By Kristie Keleshian , Zinnia Maldonado

Updated on: May 5, 2024 / 8:59 PM EDT / CBS New York

NEW YORK --  New York City's Five Boro Bike Tour is the largest charitable bike ride in the United States. It starts in Manhattan, then covers 40 miles across the five boroughs to end on Staten Island.

Five Boro Bike Tour route map

untitled-design.png

The first wave of cyclists started at 7:30 a.m. from the intersection of Franklin and Church Street in Tribeca. The last wave left at 10:25 a.m.

The route then heads up into the Bronx, over to Queens, back down to Brooklyn and ends at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island, where riders can then catch a ferry back to Manhattan.

"It's 40 miles and I enjoy every minute of it," said Anthony Maynard, from Columbia, South Carolina.

"It was a great destination and it was a tour, not a race, so we thought that it would be a first thing for us. We are not cyclists, so we've trained some," Nichole Muller, of Texas, said at the starting line.

Many riders arrived Saturday to pick up their bibs and to attend the annual blessing of the bikes.

"One of the reasons people come here, certainly not the only reason, but one of the reasons is people are aware of how dangerous this is, riding a bike in New York, and they come to pray for their own safety and ask us to pray with them for their own safety," said Patrick Malloy, Dean of Cathedral St. Catherine of the Divine.

There is no official end time, but most riders should be done by the evening.

"We're riding a tandem bike together, so that will be interesting just to take it to another level. We practiced yesterday in Central Park, we're good New York, we're good," added Meredith Mitsifer, of Arizona. "This is going to be amazing, I can't wait to see New York in a whole different way."

Cycling for a cause

The Five Boro Bike Tour represents all ages and abilities.

"It feels like a microcosm of the world," said Bike New York President and CEO Ken Podziba.

More than 32,000 cyclists take part in the charity ride, which raises money for Bike New York's free bike education programs. The nonprofit teaches children and adults how to ride, as well as bike safety.

"I'm riding on behalf of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation," said Steve Shiffman, whose wife has cystic fibrosis.

"We wanted to bring awareness to ovarian cancer," said Nicole Moler, with the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition in Dallas, Texas.

Participants from around the world say the event is a rare chance to explore the city in this way.

"I think a lot of people that maybe are not familiar with the city, they think of New York as just Manhattan, but there's so much more to New York, and I think doing it on a bike is probably the most unique way you can possibly do it," said Will Stafford, from Virginia.

Five Boro Bike Tour road closures

Of course, the bike tour also meant street, bridge and tunnel closures for drivers across the city.

The Staten Island-bound lower level of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge was closed from 2 a.m. to 7 p.m. The upper level remained open in both directions.

The Robert F. Kennedy Bridge exit ramp to the southbound FDR Drive closed from 7:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. The approach from the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel to the westbound Gowanus/Brooklyn Queens Expressway closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

See the full list of road closures here.
