The Crew 2.

The Crew 2 review – racing simulator takes the long and grinding road

PS4, Xbox One, PC; Ivory Tower/Ubisoft In this road-trip fantasy, you can drag-race in Vegas, cruise through Manhattan and divebomb off Mount Rushmore. So why isn’t it more fun?

I n The Crew 2, you and up to three online friends are free to journey across a make-believe America, switching between boats, planes and cars with a swish of the right analog stick. Happily, there’s no need to worry about real-life road-trip concerns such as the laws of physics or LA’s perpetual traffic congestion, and should you wish to somehow drive a Motocross bike to the top of Mount Rushmore to perform a front flip from its peak, you need no written permission.

Within the open-world map lurks a swathe of by-the-numbers events from the Need for Speed mould. There are urban checkpoint races; three-minute supercar scrambles in which the throng of opponents never seems more than a few feet behind; and more adventurous events like powerboat races, motocross trials and aerial freestyle stunt challenges. As a rookie driver competing in a preposterous America-wide motorsport festival, you’re out to make a name for yourself by winning races and pulling off feats of lunatic daring. Veterans of the Forza Horizon games will recognise the setup and the exuberant voiceovers, if not the low-rent execution.

The handling of The Crew 2’s many means of transport is forgiving to the point of being neutered. Cars are prone to understeer, bikes play fast and loose with the laws of physics once they hit a ramp and planes are a little too easily manoeuvred to be truly satisfying.

The scenery raises your spirits. Belting through the Louisiana Bayou at dusk in a pickup truck; looping and divebombing a stunt plane above Mount Rushmore like you’re expecting the four founding fathers to hold up score cards; a hypercar drag race along the gaudy surrealism of the Las Vegas strip – these are moments when there’s a sense of place and purpose. Multi-vehicle spectacles like the Manhattan race that opens the game – during which the horizon folds in on itself mid-race in homage to Inception – are sadly quite rare. But they are a clear expression of The Crew 2’s purpose: a cartoonish trans-American road trip.

The game is an opportunity for some simple virtual tourism. You can while away 45 minutes driving from New York to LA in your dream car, watching skyscrapers give way to forests, the Rocky Mountains and Death Valley, or cruise every twist of the Mississippi River on your way down the the Florida Keys. The problem is that it’s hard not to crave something more than a raft of hit-and-miss solo events veering from the endearingly absurd (jumping speedboats off the Hoover Dam) to the instantly forgettable (repetitive aerobatics stunts and checkpoint races along anonymous highways).

Why, for example, are there other players occupying the world map, but no way to race against them? If forming a crew of four is so central to the experience, why isn’t there more to do when you join one? All you can do is take part in the same racing events as a group, or just prowl the world map. It makes the title’s premise feel rather flimsy.

It is bizarre for a supposedly social driving game not to feature competitive multiplayer racing. Ubisoft promises that is coming this winter, but you wonder how many diehard players will stick around until then. The Crew 2 has the whiff of a game that might become something wonderful in a year’s time, after numerous patches and additions. But right here, at the beginning, it doesn’t do enough.

The Crew 2 review

A road trip that isn’t worth taking yet., our verdict.

An impressively huge, occasionally beautiful map doesn’t make up for mediocre driving and a lack of multiplayer options.

What is it? A massive open world racing game set in the USA. Expect to pay £50/$60 Developer Ivory Tower Publisher Ubisoft Reviewed on GTX 1080, Intel i5-6600K, 16GB RAM Multiplayer 1-4 Link Official site Buy it Steam / Uplay / Humble

It’s the roads between cities where The Crew 2 shines. Those great swathes of highway that curve through deserts, snake through canyons, and cut through forests. Here the game’s immense scale, arcade handling, and palpable sense of speed coalesce into something genuinely thrilling—especially if you have a couple of friends driving alongside you. But it’s a feeling that doesn’t last, because outside of these blissful moments the game is absolutely determined to sabotage the purity of its driving with endless nonsense.

The Crew 2 is an open world racer set in a massive, condensed approximation of the continental United States. To give you an idea of its size, it took me 46 minutes to drive non-stop from Los Angeles to New York City in a Ferrari 458. It’s a vast and varied setting, and it’s undoubtedly the best thing about it. There’s fun to be had in just aimlessly driving from state to state, watching the scenery change around you, visiting famous landmarks (of which there are, curiously, fewer than the first game). But the game gets impatient when you do this, insisting you focus on earning followers for some non-specific social media network instead: the primary metric of your success in The Crew 2.

Followers are earned by winning races, performing stunts, driving dangerously, and dozens of other activities that send the counter ticking up. As you play, a cast of obnoxious, horribly written characters are forever buzzing in your ear about how rad you are, how many followers you have, and how many more you could get if you take part in this awesome event, dude. The dialogue is astonishingly bad, and the whole thing comes off like a desperate attempt to piggyback on contemporary culture without really understanding it.

The Crew 2 has a 60fps framerate cap, which most modern GPUs can hit.

It’s just vapid, treating internet fame like it’s somehow the peak of human achievement, and the constant, cloying validation of everything you do, no matter how banal, is exhausting. But here’s the thing—it could have been interesting. What if, as well as earning followers, you also lost them? So every failed stunt, crash, and spin-out actually counted against you, and you were constantly at war with yourself to maintain your following. That would have at least given the social media concept some bite, rather than it just being some arbitrary number that increases to make you feel good about yourself.

It’s on the road, away from all this embarrassing “How do you do, fellow kids?” noise, where The Crew 2 is at its best—particularly in the way it lets you seamlessly transition between land, sea, and air vehicles on the fly. You can be screaming along the highway in a supercar, before transforming into a plane and taking to the air, then changing into a speedboat as you fly across a river, landing safely in the water. It’s immensely fun being able to switch your mode of transport on a whim, but the enjoyment is tainted by the fact that, cars aside, the vehicles just aren’t much fun to drive in The Crew 2.

The motorcycles, particularly the motocross bikes, are frustratingly stiff to control, with completely rote physics. Flying in planes feels sluggish and laboured, with a feeble sense of speed. And the boats are unremarkable, failing to create a convincing sensation of moving through water. None of the vehicle types (well, except for the motocross bikes) are terrible—they’re just deeply underwhelming. But they do have their moments, such as navigating a plane through the snaking rocky corridors of the Grand Canyon or back-flipping a Harley Davidson off the top of Mount Rushmore. It’s a shallow thrill, however, and I found myself spending as much time in cars as possible.

It’s immensely fun being able to switch your mode of transport on a whim

The Crew 2 is not a great driving game, but the cars are far superior to every other mode of transport. The arcadey handling is smooth and responsive, but has none of the wonderful, weighted nuance of the Forza Horizon games. The cars all feel vaguely the same, and the physics are cartoonishly bouncy, like your chassis is made of hard rubber. But when you hit those long desert roads, which seem to go on forever, it’s hard not to feel a rush of excitement. This is where the size of the map earns its keep, giving you miles of road to tear up and a powerful feeling of travelling across a great distance.

Going on cross-country road trips with friends is easily the most fun I’ve had in The Crew 2. But if you want credits to buy new cars, you’re gonna have to take part in some events. This is the game at its most basic, with all manner of checkpoint races to take part in, as well as distractions such as drag races, aerial acrobatics, and motocross competitions. I do like the off-road races and how they let you choose your own path to each checkpoint, but otherwise this is stuff I’ve seen and done in a dozen other open world driving games.

The AI is maddening too. You can drive perfectly for two laps, only to make one minor mistake and see the rest of the pack immediately rush past you. It’s some of the most obscene rubber-banding I’ve encountered in a racing game outside of Mario Kart. There’s also a hilariously jarring loot system that lets you upgrade your car with new parts. I couldn’t help but laugh at the ‘rare exhaust’ I found that gave me an utterly meaningless 0.07% boost to my follower gain. But upgrading doesn’t appear to give you any edge over the AI, who always seem to adjust to your current specs, rendering the whole activity futile.

the crew 2 road trip

The Crew would benefit from having no story and focusing entirely on the driving

If you’re in a crew you can enter these events with friends and race against them. But this, amazingly, is the extent of multiplayer in The Crew 2 at the moment. You’ll see other players in the world as you drive around, but they can’t be challenged to a race, unless you go to the trouble of inviting them to your crew first. There’s no lobby system either, meaning you can’t race against strangers on your own. Even if you start an event in a crew, the other racers will be AI. GTA Online has this stuff figured out, so why doesn’t an online-focused driving game that costs $60? Ubisoft says a December update will add PvP, but it’s bewildering that they didn’t launch the game with such basic multiplayer functionality.

There are other issues too, such as the waypoint system that sometimes just refuses to snap to any roads. Unless you’re grinding events, some vehicles are outrageously expensive—and of course there’s a cynical microtransaction storefront to tempt weak-willed players into spending real-world money on them. And despite an admirable attempt to make the game more charming than the gloomy, self-serious original, it’s completely devoid of personality. I think The Crew would benefit from having no story at all and focusing entirely on the driving, which should stand tall on its own without the player being forced to become an insufferable Instagram star against their will.

It’s a shame, because there’s a huge amount of potential in The Crew 2. The scale of the world is quite extraordinary, and being able to warp to the other side of the continent near-instantly is impressive on a technical level. Cresting a hill at night on some lonely desert highway and seeing the neon glow of Vegas far in the distance is a moment I won’t soon forget. And I love how you can share these moments of discovery with friends in co-op. The ten minutes I spent in a plane doing loops through the legs of a giant cow in Wisconsin with my friends was way more memorable than any of the tepid race events, and I feel like the game could have leaned into the co-op side of things more.

the crew 2 road trip

The PC version of the game runs well on my GTX 1080, and occasionally looks stunning—at least from a distance. There are some remarkable vistas to be found here, but the world doesn’t hold up to much scrutiny . The cities, which include San Francisco, Dallas, Washington D.C., and Chicago, are boxy and unconvincing. The lighting is often flat and lifeless, and there’s some fairly severe pop-in when moving at high speeds. The vehicles look great, but their fidelity is at odds with the world around them. It’s one of the most visually inconsistent games I’ve ever played, which I suppose is a side effect of creating a world this large. It’s clear where the corners have been cut.

The first Crew improved dramatically after a series of post-launch updates, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the sequel received the same treatment. But right now this is a full price game released by one of the biggest publishers in the world, and I can’t recommend it in its current state. The lack of multiplayer options is inexcusable and, on a more fundamental level, the driving simply isn’t as fun or refined as it should be. The Crew 2 could be something special, but Ubisoft doesn’t seem to know what to do with it. I’m willing to give it another chance after a few updates, but until then I’ll stick to Forza Horizon 3 .

6 essential The Crew 2 tips to know before you play

Learn what it takes to become America's top racer with our essential guide to The Crew 2

The Crew 2 is your new summer obsession. Blending professional driving simulations with open world mayhem, it’s an unpredictable and liberating road trip across a racing-themed recreation of the grand ol’ USA, and the series has never looked better. With 50 states (and one federal district) to race around in, there’s an absurd amount of tarmac and dirt to cover in The Crew 2, making it easy to miss some of the finer details in Ubisoft ’s ambitious sequel.

How does loot work? Can I play everything in multiplayer? And why on earth does the game want me to be taking pictures of coyotes? We intend to answer all of these questions and more with our following list of tips and pointers, all designed to help you navigate the cities and streets of Uncle Sam’s mother country like a true pro. Here are six essential The Crew 2 tips you need to know before you play.

1. Photo mode is more than a frivolous pastime

the crew 2 road trip

It’s basically the law for video games to come packaged with an in-built photo mode in 2018, but Ivory Tower hasn’t just tacked one onto The Crew 2 for the sake of it. While roaming the home of the brave, you’ll often be greeted with pop-ups notifying you that a photo challenge is nearby.

The task could be as simple as snapping a pic of a nearby coyote, or as tricky as trying to replicate that iconic scene from E.T., but fulfil the criteria, and you’ll net yourself a sizeable sum of money and followers to reward your efforts. You can mess around with the photo mode’s broad range of customisation options to make sure you get just the right frame, too, and all of them are available to view in your gallery menu, like small, digital mementos to your American adventure.

2. Live track lets you record and replay EVERYTHING

the crew 2 road trip

But why just take mere photographs when you can record footage of every second of your exploits in The Crew 2? The in-game Live Track is, literally, a live tracking feed of your movements throughout the USA, providing a clear geographical overview of where you’ve been, what you’ve been up to, and where you’re heading.

The Live App automatically records the last ten minutes of your session in The Crew 2 at any time, which you can then access and tinker with to create cool highlight reels thanks to the comprehensive video editing software included. It’s easy to share these slickly produced replays with your friends on console, too, just to make sure they all know how proficient you are behind the wheel.

3. Visiting your home brings its own rewards

the crew 2 road trip

Your nameless, speechless, and frankly rather gormless character actually has their own swanky pad based out in Miami, believe it or not, and you can visit your not-so-humble abode whenever you want to take a break from all that rubber burning in The Crew 2. And it’s not just for show, either. Home is where the heart is, as they say, but it’s also where your vehicle and driver swag is all stored up, making it the only place where you can customise your character with all those newly unlocked fashion statements.

Similarly, this is where you come to customise your own liveries and stickers for your vehicles, or deck them out in ones made by members of the community. At the very least, home is a nice breather from all the madness of Motornation outside, and it can even be upgraded as you continue to make room for all those new cars you’re purchasing.

4. Playing with crews increases your win rates

the crew 2 road trip

The title kind of gives it away, but crews are kind of a big deal in The Crew 2. You and a party of up to three other friends (or strangers you meet in the shared world) can band together to take part in races as a team, and doing so can result in some rather lucrative rewards for those who play nice with each other. If any of your crew mates wins a race or challenge that you’re partaking in together, all of you win. No catch. No strings attached.

That means you’ll receive your share of the victor’s spoils even if you’ve come dead last, so long as one your buddy fulfills the activity’s criteria. If there’s four of you playing in a race between 12, then that seriously ups your chances of victory compared to playing alone. It’s the closest video game approximation to a win-win situation, but don’t forget that you can’t play Live Xtrem Series races in co-op, so not every activity can be exploited in this way.

5. Hard mode nets you more loot for every Event

the crew 2 road trip

Once you’ve completed one of The Crew 2’s many Events, you’ll be offered the chance to have another pop at it, and this time there’s the choice to compete in normal or hard mode. Hard mode, as you’d expect, ramps up the difficulty (be it with more aggressive AI or a leaner countdown), but the added challenge is balanced by the promise of even greater sums of loot.

This is good, because The Crew 2 isn’t a particularly hard game in the first place, but playing on Hard mode can seriously up the challenge, so make sure you’ve got a well-upgraded vehicle before taking on the task. In fact, replaying these Events in end-game is a great way to test out your best new rides, which sometimes makes it feel like you’re playing a completely different activity from last time.

6. Don’t forget to pick up your loot

the crew 2 road trip

After every completed Event in The Crew 2, a handful of glowing orbs will mysteriously drop from the sky and land in front of you, Destiny 2 style. This is your loot, the rarity-tiered parts you can use to upgrade and enhance any vehicle you own, but they’re easy to miss if you’ve already taken off by the time they appear.

That’s not advised, as loot is the best way of keeping your favourite cars, boats, and planes competitive in The Crew 2, with the high-tier parts providing concrete bonuses (known as Affixes) like increased Nitro speeds or a chance for better loot drops. If you do manage to leave some loot behind, though, it’s not the end of the world. You can just head over to one of the four HQs found throughout the United States and pick them up in the mailbox (seriously, it’s weirdly similar to Destiny ).

The Crew 2‘s Map is a Whopping 7,000 km2 – What You Need to Know

Let‘s kick things off with the key fact: The Crew 2‘s explorable game world is absolutely massive, measuring approximately 5,000 to 7,000 km2 in total land area.

To put into perspective just how gigantic that is, it‘s over twice as big as the original Crew‘s map, and dwarfing the world sizes of other open world racers like Forza Horizon 5‘s 103 km2 and Need for Speed Payback‘s 78 km2.

With over 10,000 kilometers of drivable roads winding through The Crew 2‘s rendition of the continental US, you could drive non-stop for over 100 hours and still not cover every inch of pavement! Clearly, Ubisoft set out to create one of the most ambitious and sprawling open world driving sandboxes ever made.

But raw size isn‘t everything. This guide will take a deep dive into what makes The Crew 2‘s map so special, how it condenses the US geography into a manageable space, and most importantly – whether it‘s still worth exploring in 2022 with all the new racing games out there. Let‘s hit the road!

Scaling Down the USA into a Massive Open World

Ubisoft developers achieved the jaw-dropping size of The Crew 2‘s map by condensing the real United States down to approximately 1:36 of its actual scale.

So for example, a 10 km stretch of road in The Crew 2 equates to around 360 km of highway in real life. This compression allowed them to fit all 48 contiguous states into a playable video game world.

To visualize how they pulled this off, check out the data table below comparing real world locations with their in-game counterparts:

As you can see, this intelligent downscaling allowed the developers to retain the general sense of distance when road tripping coast-to-coast across the map. It feels like a cross country journey while condensing the geography into something playable.

The Sheer Variety of Terrain is Unparalleled

Another benefit of this scaled down USA is that Ubisoft could represent all of the wildly varied biomes and terrain across the country in intricate detail:

Lush forests, rolling hills, and large lakes in the Midwest region

Tropical wetlands and island chains along the Florida coast

The arid canyons and deserts of the Southwest

Vibrant cities like Miami, Los Angeles, Las Vegas recreated with accuracy

Rocky mountains, mesas, and canyons capture the Mountain States

Iconic landmarks like the Statue of Liberty and Golden Gate Bridge

And much more – it would take hours just to list all unique environments packed into the map!

Simply put, no other open world racing game comes close to matching the diversity of terrain and atmosphere as The Crew 2‘s condensed US.

From ranches to volcanos, beaches to vineyards, you really feel like you‘re exploring the entire contiguous United States with all its regional charms and quirks.

It Has 3 Times the Roads of Test Drive Unlimited

One useful metric for measuring an open world racing game‘s scale is total drivable road length.

On this front, The Crew 2 is estimated to have over 10,000 kilometers of paved roads weaving through its map.

For comparison:

The Crew 2: 10,000+ km of roads

Forza Horizon 4: 500 km

Test Drive Unlimited: 3,000 km

Need for Speed Payback: 380 km

Once again, The Crew 2 stands head and shoulders above its genre competitors. With 3x as many drivable roads as the previous king Test Drive Unlimited, Ubisoft clearly optimized their condensed US map for explorers who want to pave their own paths.

The Crew 2 Has 6 Distinct Regions

The Crew 2 region map

Now let‘s discuss The Crew 2‘s six distinct regions comprising the entire US map:

The Midwest

The green fields, forests, rivers and lakes surrounding cities like Detroit and Chicago capture quintessential Midwest landscapes and small towns. Cornfields as far as the eye can see!

Home to towering metropolises like New York City , alongside beachfronts, Atlantic coastline, and iconic roadways that give a taste of East Coast life.

Wetlands, swamps, and island chains surrounding Miami and the Florida Keys recreate The South‘s tropical atmospheres. A boater‘s paradise.

Mountain States

The arid deserts and red rock canyons surrounding Las Vegas capture the beauty and isolation of America‘s Mountain region.

Los Angeles serves as the sunny centerpiece here with its sprawling recreation encompassing Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Venice Beach and other iconic SoCal landscapes.

Canyons and wide open deserts reminiscent of Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada capture the frontier spirit of the Southwest.

Each region has unique Driver Challenges themed around its geography like trailblazing through Redwood forests or Grand Canyon whitewater rafting. There‘s always a new landscape surprise over the horizon!

It Dwarfs Open Worlds like GTA V and Horizon Zero Dawn

We‘ve established by now that The Crew 2‘s map is unusually gigantic for an open world game. But let‘s put some hard numbers to it:

  • The Crew 2: 5,000 – 7,000 km2
  • Grand Theft Auto V: 81 km2
  • Horizon: Zero Dawn: 75 km2
  • Assassin‘s Creed Odyssey: 130 km2
  • Watch Dogs Legion: 45 km2

As you can see, even behemoth open world games like GTA V and Horizon Zero Dawn clock in around 100 times smaller than The Crew 2‘s explorable recreation of the US.

And the disparity only grows wider when comparing to single city open worlds like Watch Dogs Legion‘s condensed London.

Simply unprecedented scale and scope for driving fans looking to live out their cross country road trip dreams!

The Crew 2 in 2022: Still Worth Playing?

Now that we‘ve established why The Crew 2 deserves its reputation as one of the most ambitiously massive open worlds ever designed, is it still worth playing in 2022? Let‘s zoom through a few key points:

Ubisoft‘s Ongoing Support

Four years after launch, Ubisoft continues rolling out new vehicles, events, missions and quality of life improvements via free updates. This sustains the experience rather than abandoning it as a "dead game".

Satisfying Progression System

Leveling up your vehicles by winning events never gets old. Unlocking new disciplines like aerobatics or powerboating creates a compelling gear collector loop.

Relaxing Road Trip Vibes

Many fans praise The Crew 2 as a chill cruising game thanks to the lack of collisions and traffic. It perfectly captures the zen road trip fantasy.

Frequent Discounts

The game sees deep discounts down to $15-20 regularly. Combined with a free 4-hour trial, you‘ve got nothing to lose test driving The Crew 2 for yourself.

Simply Unmatched Scale

If you want to road trip across a condensed but reasonably accurate recreation of the entire continental US, nothing else comes close to the insane scope and variety of The Crew 2.

So while it may lack the polish of Forza Horizon 5 or story focus of Need for Speed games, The Crew 2‘s gargantuan map and relaxing DIY road trip vibes cement its value for driving fans in 2022.

Ubisoft clearly achieved their goal of cramming the iconic American landscapes we know and love into one interconnected open world masterpiece.

The Takeaway

In summary, The Crew 2‘s explorable map measuring 5,000 to 7,000 km2 is one of the most ambitious and impressive technical achievements in open world design.

No other driving game allows you to seamlessly road trip across so many intricately crafted American landscapes, from the California coast to the Florida Keys.

Yet it retains a surprising level of realism via intelligent scaled down distances and extremely diverse biomes condensed into six core regions.

Factor in outstanding post-launch support from Ubisoft, and The Crew 2 remains a breathtaking playground that gearheads should visit at least once.

So gather your crew and hit the road to see America beautiful in a whole new light! Just be sure to stop at a few roadside diners along the way.

The Crew 2 Photo Ops Locations

July 7, 2018 by CriesOfFurya 3 Comments

:square:

Doing Photo Ops gives you money, followers, the “Pics or it didn’t happen” trophy/achievement (for 40 photos) and it adds towards your progression in each racing discipline.

All 4 racing series have a photo op menu called “Photo Album” that is divided into 3 categories. The categories are made up of 6-10 photo ops and amount to a total of 92 photo ops. You can view the Photo Albums in the Pause Menu > Activities > Select Racing Discipline > Photo Album.

In the Photo Albums Menu you can activate each photo op individually and see the exact requirements. This is by far the easiest and most reliable way to trigger each op. Then all you have to do is go to the locations shown in the guide below. The Photo Album Menu also lets you keep track of which ones you have completed. They will also be marked on the map after taking the photo.
