Jersey Public Bus Service

Jersey is home to LibertyBus , a broad network of buses that are easy to access and simple to navigate. The small size of the island makes it perfect for exploring in this way, as the majority of Jersey’s popular destinations and attractions can be reached by bus.

Liberation Station is located in St. Helier and there are additional bus stops and bus stopping points, with BUS marked in white on the road, situated island-wide. Timetables are offered at the station, at Jersey’s tourist information centre and online .

A single journey ticket can be purchased in cash when you board the bus for adults and for children, which includes children between the ages of 5 and 15. Students attending school full time also pay this rate. Proof of age may be requested. Children under 5 travel free. Jersey also offers a ‘hop on hop off’ ticket, which is designed for visitors. This offers unlimited travel on Jersey’s transit system for 1, 2, 3 or 7 days and can be purchased at Liberation Station. Quick Links

The parish of St Helier is the centre of the island-wide bus services, which cover all the major Jersey tourist attractions .  If you’re planning a Jersey city break, a bus is the only mode of Jersey transport you’ll need to use.  The buses in Jersey start and finish from the new Liberation bus station in St Helier and provide a comprehensive network of routes around the Island.

Linking many rural communities, sights and attractions which are located in sparsely populated corners of the island, these can easily be accessed and enjoyed thanks to the bus service.  ‘Explorer tickets’ offer unlimited travel on buses, representing good value for money, and run to the majority of the Islands key attractions.

See the table below for the Jersey Multi-Journey Bus Pass:

There are two types of AvanchiCards – AvanchiCard PAYG and AvanchiCard Unlimited.

AvanchiCard PAYG

The AvanchiCard PAYG is the most cost-effective way to get around Jersey with every journey charged at £1.85.

When purchasing an AvanchiCard PAYG from Liberation Station it needs to be loaded with £5 credit and can then be topped up online as required.

AvanchiCard Unlimited

The AvanchiCard Unlimited pass comes in two variations – monthly or annual. This pass allows unlimited travel for the duration of the pass.

Jersey Bus Tips

Jersey taxis – getting around jersey.

Take the stress and planning out of your trip by using one of the reliable local taxi services available on the island. Please be aware that different rates apply to both public rank taxis and privately booked cabs depending on the time and day, and public holidays.

Jersey Rank Taxis

Rank taxis can be recognised by their yellow roof signs, and are generally cheaper than private hire cabs. All rank taxis charge the same tariff via their meters, which is higher at night and on public holidays. They will also charge extra for waiting and for luggage not carried in the passenger compartment.

Taxi ranks can be found outside the Arrivals Hall at Jersey Airport, and at the Albert and Elizabeth Harbours. When the airport is busy, there can be a queue. There may not be taxis at the harbour terminals unless a boat is due in.

In St Helier, there are ranks in Library Place, Snow Hill, and at the Weighbridge (bus station). Queues can be very long after the nightclubs close.

It is illegal for a child under the age of three to ride in a taxi unless there is a proper child seat. Some of the newer taxis have a built-in child seat which folds down from the rear seat.

A few of the rank taxis are the black cab type and may carry wheelchair ramps.

Private Hire Cabs

Private Hire cabs need to be booked in advance from one of several taxi companies (see below for the biggest cab companies on the island). You can recognise them by the white roof sign, usually with the company name and the word ‘restricted’.

If you plan to travel at peak times such as the morning or evening rush hour, during the evening when many people are on the way out for the evening, or after the pubs or nightclubs close, you will need to book your cab well in advance. Cab companies will sometimes refuse to take bookings late on Friday or Saturday nights unless you have made the outward journey with them as they give priority to customers booking return trips.

Some of the bigger cab companies have child seats, but if you need one you must book in advance so that the company can make sure they put one in the car.

How Much is a Taxi from Jersey Airport to St Helier?

If you pick up a taxi from the taxi rank outside Jersey Airport then the rough price into the centre of St Helier should be no more than £15 – 20. You may pay slightly more between 23:00 – 07:00 and on Sundays and public holidays.

Driving in Jersey / Jersey Car Hire – Getting Around Jersey

Green Lanes

At the end of 2006 there were 104,537 cars registered in Jersey, and coupled with the small narrow lanes and low speed limit can make driving around a slow process.  However driving in Jersey gives added flexibility and is a convenient way of exploring the many tourist attractions in Jersey.

With many hire cars available and cheap fuel, driving makes sense on the tourist attractions that are further away.  Driving in Jersey takes place on the left-hand side of the road, the same as in the UK, but there are a few differences.

Traffic lights in Jersey change from Red to Green with no amber in between, a yellow line across a road means the exit of a minor road and you must give way, and a ‘filter in turn’ sign means take your turn with other vehicles in joining or crossing any stream of traffic.  The maximum speed limit in Jersey is 40mph, and you should avoid using the Green Lanes roads with their 15mph speed limit.

Drinking and Driving

Drink driving is taken very seriously in Jersey, with penalties of up £2,000 in fines, 6 months in prison and unlimited disqualification for a first offence.

The legal limit for driving in Jersey is 80mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood. It is also an offence in Jersey to drive under the influence of drugs.

Drink driving checks are carried out throughout the year. These usually take the form of roadside checks carried out by the Jersey Police force. If you are going out for the evening and plan to drink, better to book a taxi.

Parking in Jersey

Parking in Jersey can sometimes be difficult and you don’t want to spoil your holiday with a fine.

Jersey has one of the highest ratios of cars to people in the world. Parking isn’t as expensive as many cities, averaging around 50p an hour, but fines are high and easy to get.

While most of the big tourist attractions and events have large car parks, St Helier, and many popular bays, have limited spaces. Some favourite spots, such as Green Island, will never be too crowded because there is so little parking.

If you are going to spend the day at a beach, consider getting there by bus instead. There is a Jersey bus service to most of the popular beaches and some of the smaller ones during the summer months.

You might have particular difficulty parking at Green Island, Plemont, Grève de Lecq , Rozel, Bouley Bay or Bonne Nuit unless you arrive early. Parking at St Aubin can be difficult, but there is parking along the road towards La Haule slip if you don’t mind a short walk.

Parking near Le Braye slip at St Ouen’s gets very crowded on hot days, as does St Brelade . All of these bays and beaches have reasonable or good bus services.

Parking in Jersey can be at its worst in St Helier on a Saturday.

Road Markings

Unlike the majority of the UK, a single yellow line along the edge of the road means no parking at any time. You are allowed to briefly stop and let someone get in or out of the car, and you can stop to load or unload something heavy, but park on a yellow line and you are at risk of getting a ticket.

There are a quite a few places where it is difficult to access a business relying on passing trade without parking on a yellow line. Due to the friendly village feel of Jersey, the traffic wardens will usually pop inside and ask before giving a ticket. If you want to pop in somewhere and it looks as if you could stop on the yellow line for a short while without causing disruption to the traffic flow or blocking emergency access, it is worth getting someone to run in and ask he shopkeeper how parking outside is dealt with.

Paycard Parking in Jersey

On-street parking in Jersey is paid for using paycards. There are no meters. Most car parks also require paycards. Paycards are not sold in car parks and so must be bought in advance.

The only other type of paid parking in Jersey are a few car parks where you pay on exit. These are at the Elizabeth Harbour, the Airport and the Waterfront.

Most parking is charged from 8am to 5pm Monday to Saturday, but there are some car parks that charge outside of these times.

If you are bringing your car to Jersey, then you can buy Paycards on the ferry. If you forget, look for the 30 minute parking spaces on the right as soon as you drive out of the customs hall. If there is a space here it is worth going into the main terminal building – the shop sells Paycards for parking. Make sure someone stays with the car, or leave a note in the windscreen saying something like ‘Just arrived in Jersey – gone inside to buy Paycards’. Then hopefully you won’t be booked.

Buying Paycards

Paycards are not sold in car parks other than Sand Street. They are mainly sold in most corner shops, supermarkets, post offices, garages, hire car firms, Jersey Tourism and anywhere else that displays the ‘Paycards sold here sign’. It is strongly recommended you get hold of some Paycards before you park. They are sold in books of 10 or single cards, in three values – 1, 2 or 4 units.

If you have been to Jersey before and you have some Paycards left over, check that they say 1 unit, 2 units or 4 units in the bottom right-hand corner or half-way down the left-hand side. If instead they state a price, they are the old-style Paycards and are no longer valid.

Using Paycards

Look for the signs which tell you how long you can park for and how long a ‘unit’ will pay for. On-street parking in Jersey is divided into red and yellow zones. In the red zone you are allowed to stay for a maximum of one hour, using 1 unit of a Paycard. In the yellow zone (mostly town centre) parking is restricted to 20 minutes for 1 unit. Once this time is up you must move the car – you can’t add another Paycard.

Most of the large car parks charge 1 unit for an hour stay, but by displaying more units you can stay longer. Look at the information board to see the maximum stay. There are a few car parks that allow you 2 hours for 1 unit.

If you are using more than one paycard, scratch them all exactly the same. For example if you arrive at 10am and want to stay 3 hours at 1 unit an hour, scratch all your cards to say 10am. If you make a mistake scratching the card, you have to throw it away and use another one.

One of the drawbacks with parking in Jersey using Paycards is that you have to decide in advance how long you will be parking. Fines for staying longer than you have paid for are steep, so it’s worth using another unit if you think you might be a little late back. After you lock the car, check that your cards are clearly visible. You will be fined if they have fallen off the dashboard and can’t be seen clearly.

Cycling in Jersey – Getting Around Jersey

Cycling in Jersey

Jersey is one of Europe’s best-kept secrets for cycling and there is no better way of taking in the wonderful sights than from the seat of a bicycle. The 350 mile island-wide cycling network of roads, by-ways and lanes offer a number of trails and you can enjoy a leisurely scenic ride of just a few miles or a challenging ride around the island.

A newly developed Town Cycle Network now joins the existing 96 miles of marked routes and offers a series of routes using Liberation Square as the starting point.  The routes are suitable for novice riders who may not be confident in traffic and who require a safe and clearly visible route to the edge of town.

The Green Lanes network is also ideal for cyclists, with the surfaced roads meaning they are nice and smooth and with priority to cyclists, walkers and horse riders, means they avoid dangerous traffic.  Routes are well sign posted, and as well as a great way to explore and get some exercise, best of all is that cycling is free!

Some notes for cyclists: When cycling at night, ensure your front and rear lights are lit and your bicycle have an efficient red rear reflector. Stay as close as possible to the side of the road when wheeling your bicycle.  It is recommended that cyclists wear a cycle helmet and fluorescent or light coloured clothing.

Walking in Jersey – Getting Around Jersey

Plemont

For such a small Island, Jersey is a walker’s paradise offering a huge number of different types of walks from coastal walks with breath-taking views, country walks through rural paradises, wildlife walks for nature lovers and guided walks including annual walking festivals such as the spring and autumn walking weeks.

Everywhere along the coast you’ll find gentle beach walks and spectacular cliff paths or explore Jersey’s traditional woodland, there are half-hour strolls to long distance hikes, there really is a walk for everyone. Why not try the popular Charity Island walking event ‘the Itex walk’ which is also held on Guernsey .  The aim is to walk around the entire Island in just one day.

Jersey Green Lanes

Jersey’s famous ‘Green Lanes’ was first introduced in the Parish of St Peter in 1994 and can now be found in ten of the Island’s twelve parishes.  The only two parishes they do not feature are Trinity and St Saviour .  Easily identified by a special road sign with the words ‘Start of Green Lane’, the 50 mile network of tranquil and highly scenic lanes are a walker’s paradise and is the only way to experience the island’s natural beauty.

Inland footpaths are not as widespread as on the mainland and rights of way which cross private property, in particular woods and fields are rather the exception.  As the maximum speed limit is just 15mph, walkers have priority over the car and the lanes are surfaced roads so ideal for cyclists.  The tree-lined byways are an ideal way of travelling from parish to parish in a relaxing manor and the almost continual footpath along the north coast gives you access to some of the most spectacular scenery in the British Isles.

Getting Around Jersey: A Comprehensive Guide to Exploring the Island

Jersey is a small, beautiful island in the English Channel between England and France. It’s the biggest Channel Islands and combines British and French styles. Even though it’s only nine miles long and five miles wide, Jersey has many different places to see – like pretty beaches, green countryside, and old buildings. One of the best things about Jersey is that there are many ways to get around.

You can take a bus, drive a car, ride a bike, or walk. Each method is special and lets you see Jersey differently. This guide will help you find the best way to see all the cool things in Jersey and have a great trip!

Public Transportation in Jersey

bus travel on jersey

Jersey’s comprehensive public transportation system is centred around the parish of St Helier, acting as the hub for the island’s bus services. The network covers all major tourist attractions, making it a convenient and cost-effective option for visitors. Buses operate from the modern Liberation bus station in St Helier, providing reliable and comfortable transport across the island.

The bus service extends into rural areas for those looking to explore beyond the city, making even the most secluded corners of Jersey accessible. The ‘Explorer tickets’ are particularly beneficial for tourists, offering unlimited travel and representing excellent value for money. These tickets allow you to hop on and off at various attractions at your leisure, making them ideal for a flexible, stress-free island exploration.

Taxi Services on the Island

bus travel on jersey

Jersey’s taxi services are a convenient choice for those seeking a more personal and direct mode of transportation. The island boasts a reliable fleet of local taxis, readily available for spontaneous rides from public ranks and pre-booked private hires. When using these services, it’s important to note that rates can vary depending on the time of day, with different tariffs applied for evenings, weekends, and public holidays.

Taxis in Jersey offer a stress-free way to navigate the island, especially beneficial for those unfamiliar with the local roads or for late-night travel.

Driving in Jersey

bus travel on jersey

Driving around Jersey is a great way to see the island at your own pace. The island has many roads, over 350 miles, that take you through beautiful countryside and along the coast. When you drive in Jersey, remember that people go on the left side of the road, just like in the UK. The maximum speed limit is usually 40 miles per hour, but it can be lower in some places, especially on the small ‘Green Lanes’ where the speed limit is just 15 mph.

You can bring your car or rent one. Renting a car is a good idea because it lets you visit many different places on your schedule. But there are a few things to know. For example, traffic lights in Jersey go straight from red to green without the amber light in between. And there are some signs, like ‘filter in turn,’ which means you take turns with other cars at some junctions. Remember, if you’re bringing your vehicle, you must have a special insurance card and driving license.

bus travel on jersey

Jersey is a fantastic place for cycling. The island has a big network of roads and lanes perfect for bike riding. It’s a fun and healthy way to see the island. There are even special ‘Green Lanes’ where cyclists, walkers, and horse riders are given priority over cars, making it safer and more enjoyable.

There are a lot of different cycling routes you can take, from easy rides just a few miles long to more challenging ways that go around the whole island. The trails are well-marked so that you will stay aware, and they take you to beautiful places. You can bring your bike or rent one on the island. It’s a free way to get around and see many cool things!

Walking and Hiking

bus travel on jersey

Walking is one of the best ways to explore Jersey. The island might be small, but it has a lot of different walks you can do. There are walks along the coast where you can see amazing sea views, walks in the countryside where you can visit farms and forests, and even walks where you can learn about nature and wildlife.

There are walks for everyone, whether you want a short, easy stroll or a longer hike. Some special walking events happen throughout the year, like walking festivals in the spring and autumn. There’s even a big walking event called the Itex Walk, where people try to walk around the island in one day!

Jersey is a beautiful island with lots of different ways to get around. Whether you like to drive, take a bus, ride a bike, or walk, there’s something for everyone. Each method of getting around lets you see the island differently. So when you visit Jersey, try different ways of exploring and see which one you like best. Have fun and enjoy all the wonderful things Jersey has to offer!

New York state and city officials urge caution if traveling during solar eclipse

State transportation officials suggested new yorkers leave early to view the eclipse, be prepared for traffic, and follow the law by not parking on the shoulder, by nbc new york staff • published april 7, 2024 • updated on april 8, 2024 at 8:23 am.

New York City and Empire State officials are cautioning about the challenges of traveling Monday afternoon during the solar eclipse .

The greater New York City area will see a partial solar eclipse (not a total one), but will have nearly 90% of coverage of the sun. The strongest effects will start around 3 p.m. and last an hour.

The New York City Office of Emergency Management warned "New Yorkers are advised to take caution while traveling due to the sudden lack of light."

Gov. Kathy Hochul said a large number of visitors are expected to New York state and traffic could be more congested than normal.

“New York is prepared to welcome visitors from around the world to view the total solar eclipse on April 8, and I urge all travelers to be prepared for a high volume of traffic,” Hochul said.

The state Department of Transportation said extra HELP and tow trucks will be on the roads, but New Yorkers should take precautions before heading out to view the eclipse.

"I urge all New Yorkers to enjoy this natural wonder - but do so, safely," Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez said in a statement. " Leave early, be prepared for traffic delays - bring extra food, water and blankets and don’t forget your eclipse viewing glasses. Please remember to not park on the shoulders of the road, and most importantly, pack your patience."

This couple lives in a school bus they converted into a luxury tiny home—take a look inside

In 2021, Tanya Nestoruk, 31, and Arya Touserkani, 38, were living in a four-bedroom house in Canada when they decided to sell it and move into a van.

"I love the simplicity and versatility of being able to live and travel wherever you want, have minimal impact, and explore new places," Nestoruk tells CNBC Make It.

Nestoruk, an environmental educator, and Touserkani, a photographer, lived in the van for several months when they realized they wanted something bigger. They decided on a school bus.

"We wanted to do something more adventurous and we thought the school bus would be a fun way to give a second life to a retired vehicle," Nestoruk says.

Nestoruk found the retired school bus on Facebook Marketplace. The seller was a school bus contractor, which the couple says was a blessing in disguise because it meant the bus would have up-to-date- maintenance records and be relatively well taken care of.

"Someone drove it on its last school run and then we took it home right then and there," she says.

The couple bought the school bus for $7,200, according to documents reviewed by CNBC Make It.

The two agreed they wanted to renovate within six months of their big purchase. During the renovation, Nestoruk and Touserkani tried to recycle everything they could from the bus, including donating the seats to a local kids camp and selling the luggage racks to someone who was going to repurpose them for their garage.

The couple wanted to renovate the school bus outdoors, but the Canadian weather had other ideas. They rented a workshop where they could consistently work on the bus.

Because they wanted to DIY the renovation, Touserkani tells CNBC Make It the two spent their days building and their nights googling and watching YouTube videos on how to do stuff for the next day.

"It was nonstop and we worked on it as much as we could," he says. "I got so obsessed with everything that needed to be done with that bus."

"It was a challenge because we weren't able to disconnect because we had to plan for the next steps while trying to do the current steps," he added.

The couple needed to stick to their six-month timeline because they wanted to escape the Canadian winter and travel to Baja California, Mexico.

"We were following the warm weather as snowbirds in training," Nestoruk says, laughing.

The couple spent roughly $30,000 and one year turning the school bus into their home. The bus has a bedroom with a king-sized bed, a living room with a custom pullout couch, a kitchen with a three-burner stovetop and oven, and a bathroom. They also found an RV washer and dryer on Facebook Marketplace.

There is hidden storage for food, an on-demand hot water heater, the couple's belongings, and much more.

Nestoruk and Touserkani say the thing people love most about their school bus are the two skylights they installed — Touserkani is 6'1'' and wouldn't be able to stand up straight on the bus without them.

"They provide so much natural light, and it really makes the space special for us," he says.

Nestoruk adds that the skylights were also a cost-effective way for them to raise the roof in key areas without having to do the entire thing.

The school bus has solar panels so the couple can be completely off the grid.

Nestoruk and Touserkani built stairs that lead up to the roof and had a friend weld a rear hitch deck that holds their motorcycles, which they use as their everyday transportation. There's also a table on the outside of the bus that they use for barbecues and whenever they have guests.

The two say they don't think renovations on the bus will ever really be finished, but they did stop work on it in November 2022 to head down to Mexico.

"We found there was a certain type of energy that the bus attracted and it was just fun," Touserkani says. "Everyone always had a strong connection to it. It's been a lot of fun interacting with people who are attracted to the bus."

The couple has been living on and off the school bus for over a year now and says that like with every living situation, there are pros and cons.

"You have to be proactive in your everyday chores which is good and bad. There's a freedom with that too, which is great, and we love, and then just the reality of it is that sometimes it can require more work," Nestoruk says.

"If you're signing up for living in any sort of a vehicle, there is always going to be some level of maintenance work that needs to happen. It's not as carefree as living in a house," Touserkani says.

The biggest concern for the couple is being environmentally conscious while on the road.

"We want to have as minimal impact as possible," Nestoruk says. "We want to promote environmentally friendly living to others, too."

The couple is currently on a break from life on their school bus and plans to eventually sell it and explore other tiny living options. They also want to build their dream home on Vancouver Island in British Columbia.

"We're hoping to enjoy the bus as long as we can and we hope that the next owners will take it on new adventures," Nestoruk says. "It has lots of life left."

Earthquake snarls air and train travel in the New York City area

By Megan Cerullo

Edited By Aimee Picchi

Updated on: April 5, 2024 / 4:36 PM EDT / CBS News

An  earthquake  centered in New Jersey and felt across the New York City region on Friday disrupted air and rail travel, with ground stoppages at airports in the New York City area and delays in train service.

Travel operations were momentarily halted Friday morning with ground stoppages at John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens and at Newark Liberty International Airport in Newark, New Jersey, with crews working to resume normal air traffic operations. By early afternoon, the ground stoppage at JFK had been lifted.

Arriving and departing flights in Newark also resumed in the afternoon, but delays averaged roughly two hours,  according  to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The earthquake, which occurred roughly 10:20 a.m. Eastern time, had either a 4.7 or 4.8 magnitude and was centered near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, 40 miles west of New York City,  according to the United States Geological Survey.

Newark airport is experiencing average departure delays of 43 minutes, according to flight tracking website FlightAware. Inbound aircraft that are already airborne are delayed by about an hour. Inbound flights that have not yet taken off are being held until 12:30 p.m., according to the site.

Flights in and out of LaGuardia airport in Queens were also delayed, likely in order for airport staff to check for damage to the airport and runways and clear away any debris.

The ground stoppages and delays are not expected to last long.

Additionally, New Jersey Transit said it's experiencing up to 20-minute delays across its entire rail service system, in both directions. NJ Transit said it's inspecting a bridge for damage to ensure train travel is safe.

15 Best Places to Visit in New Jersey, According to Local Experts

Don’t miss these awesome spots in the Garden State.

Bordered by New York to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Delaware to the south, and Pennsylvania to the west, New Jersey stretches 150 miles from top to bottom. And while some may joke that it’s just one big highway, residents and return visitors know of its many charms. The Garden State has something for just about every type of traveler (not to mention some great places to live ), whether you prefer the sandy beaches and Victorian homes of Cape May, the nostalgic fun of the Ocean City Boardwalk, or the live entertainment in Atlantic City.

We talked to insiders to get the scoop on the best places to visit in New Jersey.

Ocean City Boardwalk

DenisTangneyJr/Getty Images

“The Ocean City Boardwalk is a famous promenade that’s been a source of entertainment for more than 100 years,” says Diane Wieland, chairperson of Southern Shore Region DMO. The wooden walkway has amusement rides for all ages, mini golf, arcade games, souvenir and sweet shops, and iconic boardwalk eats — hot dogs, burgers, fries, pizza, and soft serve.

Situated at the tip of the Cape May peninsula, Cape May boasts sandy beaches, historic trolley rides, a striped lighthouse, and Victorian architecture. More than just a summer destination, the charming Jersey Shore town gets into the spirit for all the seasons — especially the holidays with festive decorations, tree lighting ceremonies, and a vendor village at Congress Hall .

Morey's Piers & Beachfront Water Parks

Hannah Beier/Getty Images

For summertime fun, look no further than Morey's Piers & Beachfront Water Parks. “Families can spend the entire day on more than 100 rides, splashing around the two water parks right on the beach, and lounging in private cabanas,” says Jeffrey Vasser, executive director, New Jersey Division of Travel & Tourism.

Wildwoods Boardwalk

In a state known for its seaside amusements , the Wildwoods Boardwalk stands out from the pack. Composed of more than 70,000 wooden planks, the 38-block oceanfront stretch draws crowds with everything from amusement piers featuring rides and games galore to water parks to classic eateries and shopping.

Wildwood’s Doo Wop Motel District

“Walking around Wildwood’s Doo Wop Motel District is like being transported to the 1950s,” says Vasser. Dotted along the two-mile stretch between Atlantic and Ocean Avenues sits the largest concentration of mid-century motels in the country. “It’s really neat to see all the neon signs and retro details.”

American Dream

Courtesy of American Dream

“ American Dream is, quite literally, an indoor vacation one-stop shop that’s open year-round,” raves Vasser. From the Nickelodeon Universe theme park and the DreamWorks Water Park to skiing at Big Snow and surf lessons at Skudin Surf to the hundreds of stores (it’s the second-largest shopping mall in the United States) and restaurants, it provides endless fun for the whole family.

Lambertville

Moelyn Photos/Getty Images

Founded in 1705, Lambertville brings history to life through its well-preserved federal townhouses, Victorian homes, antique shops, restored 19th-century train depot, and the James Wilson Marshall House . “The charming town also supplies family-owned wineries and photogenic vantage points such as Goat Hill Overlook,” adds Vasser.

Beneduce Vineyards

andykazie/Getty Images

"Most people don’t realize New Jersey is home to more than 50 wineries,” says Vasser. “One of my favorites, Beneduce Vineyards , has great wine and fun year-round events such as live music and food trucks on Saturdays.” Plus, it’s located less than 75 minutes from New York City and Philadelphia.

Grounds for Sculpture

Courtesy of Grounds for Sculpture

Located on the former site of Trenton Speedway, Grounds for Sculpture is a 42-acre sculpture park and museum. Visitors can spend the day ogling art and grabbing a bite at the restaurant. The Hamilton cultural institution also hosts special events such as after-dark light and sound experiences in partnership with Klip Collective and the upcoming Def Poetry Jam Reunion .

Atlantic City

Approximately two hours from the Big Apple, Atlantic City — the East Coast's answer to Las Vegas — dazzles visitors with its casinos, live entertainment, glitzy hotels, and big-name restaurants like Nobu . While Steel Pier offers games, entertainment, boardwalk fare, an observation wheel with sweeping views, and the only helicopter ride at the Jersey Shore.

Nestled along the banks of the Delaware River in Hunterdon County, Frenchtown is a vibrant community with plenty of Victorian architecture, art, and culture to keep travelers entertained year-round. Vasser suggests visiting over Labor Day weekend because that's when Frenchtown Riverfest takes place. “There are all kinds of street fair activities along the river,” he says.

Cape May County Park & Zoo

Joseph Hulik / FOAP/Getty Images

Located in the Cape May Court House section of Middle Township, the Cape May County Park & Zoo houses more than 550 different animals and is free to the public. There are also awesome playgrounds for kids of all ages just outside the entrance. "It's truly one of the best-kept secrets in the area," says Wieland.

Asbury Park

Jon Bilous/Getty Images

Over the last decade, Asbury Park has become a creative hub and music mecca. There are so many venues to catch a show. Wieland recommends The Stone Pony , which is best known for launching the career of Bruce Springsteen. Asbury Lanes combines bowling, dining, and live entertainment. To admire eye-catching artwork, head to the boardwalk. The Wooden Walls Project collaborates with artists to turn blank walls into colorful photo ops.

Adventure Aquarium

Andrew Burton/Getty Images

Adventure Aquarium protects more than 8,500 aquatic species, including penguins, turtles, stingrays, and the largest collection of sharks on the East Coast. It also gives visitors the chance to interact with hundreds of sea creatures at the touch tanks. “It’s a favorite for kids of all ages, especially if you’re looking for an indoor activity,” says Wieland.

Long Beach Island

Eileen_10/Getty Images

With 130 miles of Atlantic Ocean real estate, there’s no shortage of beautiful beaches in the Garden State . But the shores of Long Beach Island are particularly lovely. Besides its scenic Atlantic Ocean coastline, vacationers go for the water sports, charming towns like Barnegat Light, and laid-back lifestyle.

Solar eclipse 2024: Follow the path of totality

Thinking of taking a last-minute drive to see the eclipse here's what to know.

RV traffic sits at a standstill along a two-lane road near Madras, Ore., a few days before the 2017 total solar eclipse. Experts say traffic could be heavy, but eclipse watchers shouldn't necessarily be deterred.

NASA says that roughly 31.6 million people live in the path of this year's total solar eclipse, and a little under half of the U.S. population lives within 200 miles driving distance of the path of totality .

That could mean many millions of Americans will hit the road to get a better view on April 8. If you're still pondering whether or not you want to make the journey, here's what to consider.

Have some destinations in mind, and check the weather and cloud cover forecasts in advance

It's a good idea to scout out one or more locations within driving distance, so that you have some flexibility if traffic or weather is threatening your plans, says Jonathan Upchurch, a professor emeritus of civil engineering at Arizona State University who has studied travel around solar eclipses.

There are several interactive tools that show the path of totality, including Eclipse2024.org and the National Solar Observatory . You can use them to figure out what sites might work best for you.

In terms of weather, check not just the weather forecast, but also the cloud cover forecast. Some websites, such as Windy.com will predict cloud cover ahead of time, giving you a sense of whether you'll actually be able to see the eclipse in all its glory.

Everything you need to know about solar eclipse glasses before April 8

Everything you need to know about solar eclipse glasses before April 8

During the total solar eclipse in 2017, Upchurch says he chose to go to Idaho "because there were some great chances of having sunny skies, and I had the opportunity to be nimble and relocate if I wanted to."

Before driving into the path of totality, make sure your gas tank is full and that you've got everything you need

During the last total solar eclipse in 2017, it's estimated some 5 million people took to the roads, and those numbers will potentially be much higher this year.

Given all that, Upchurch says it's important to make sure you're taking what you need into the path of totality. You should make sure your car is gassed or charged up, and that you have plenty of snacks and water with you in case you get stranded for a while, especially when trying to leave.

Simple tips to safely photograph the eclipse with your cellphone

Simple tips to safely photograph the eclipse with your cellphone.

Also don't forget to bring eclipse glasses, which must be worn anytime you're looking at the sun, except for the few minutes when it is completely blocked by the moon.

Some state emergency planners also recommend bringing a paper map or road atlas in case cellular networks become overloaded with visitors seeking directions from their phones.

Arrive early and stay late

Once you figure out where you're going to watch the eclipse, and you've got your supplies, try to get there early. Although traffic is likely to be heavier than normal on the morning of eclipse day, it still should be possible to reach many destinations without too much hassle, says Upchurch.

"Leaving is definitely going to be more of a problem," he says. As the eclipse concludes, people will take to the roads all at once to try and get home as fast as they can. In 2017, that led to traffic jams that lasted many hours in some areas. If possible, Upchurch says, people should stay put for a while to try and avoid the worst of the post-eclipse rush, which in 2017 stretched even into the following day in some parts of the country.

Here's what time the eclipse will be visible in your region

Here's what time the eclipse will be visible in your region

And one more thing: If you do find yourself on the move near the time of the eclipse, state officials stress that you should not simply pull over to the side of the road or highway you're driving on. It's important to be parked legally and safely at the moment of totality.

If you're already in the path of totality: Relax and enjoy!

Several major metropolitan areas including Dallas, Indianapolis, Cleveland and Buffalo are already inside the path of totality, so there's no need to seek a better view, Upchurch says. You'll probably have the most fun simply staying where you are.

Watching a solar eclipse without the right filters can cause eye damage. Here's why

Watching a solar eclipse without the right filters can cause eye damage. here's why.

If you're on the edge of the path of totality, however, you might consider making a short trip to get closer to the center of the eclipse's path.

"If you're within about 40 miles of the center line, you'll have two-and-a-half minutes or more" of complete totality, Upchurch says. It's up to you to decide whether it's worth making the trip to a more central location.

Despite studying the potential hassles of traveling extensively, Upchurch says he's still looking forward to seeing the 2024 eclipse, which he plans to watch from Texas.

"Totality is absolutely spectacular," he says. "If you have a chance to witness it, I would do it."
