Roadtrip Guide from Cochin to Munnar

A road trip from Cochin to Munnar is one of the most frequented roads in south India. The crown jewel adorning South Indian hill stations, Munnar is also termed the ‘Kashmir of the South’, famous for its mountain ranges and tea plantations. The drive from Cochin to Munnar is full of cascading waterfalls and breathtaking mountain views. Hence, making it an unforgettable experience. Cochin to Munnar Sightseeing Places

Puthencruz and kolanchery.

Puthencruz and Kolanchery are among the fast-developing villages in Ernakulum district. The villages are a part of the greater Cochin development area and they connect other towns and high range areas to the city of Kochi. The famous church of Kadamattom is between Puthencruz and Kolanchery.

Muvattupuzha

Muvattupuzha is located at a distance of 36km from Cochin and is a significant town connecting Cochin and Munnar. The city sits on the shores of Muvattupuzhayar or Muvattupuzha River. The dreamland municipal park, Areekal waterfalls, St. George Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, Kochareekal caves are some of the main attractions of Muvattupuzha. Vazhakulam is en route to Muvattupuzha and has the largest Asian pineapple market. It is therefore nicknamed the ‘pineapple city of the world’.

Neriyamangalam Bridge

Travelling through the canopy-covered roads of Neriyamangalam, we reach the Kothamangalam Bridge, often termed the ‘gateway to high range.’ The bridge was made by the Maharaja of Travancore in the year 1935 and marked the border between the districts of Idukki and Ernakulum. Neriyamangalam has the annual average rainfall rate in the state. Hence, it goes by the nickname ‘Chirapunji of Kerala’.

Entrance from Cochin to Munnar

The winding forest roads from Cochin to Munnar are full of breathtaking views of mountain ranges and the occasional galloping of waterfalls. Cheeyapara waterfalls are an important viewpoint en route to Munnar and are often brimming with tourists. The waterfalls also have an upper viewpoint.

The entrance to Munnar greets you with a lushful green meadow on one side and a lake on the other. Kerala state transport stand is located nearby for easy access to all tourists. The famous old Munnar church is only a few steps away from the lake. The church was built by Henry Mansfield knight, a man who served as the manager of the Kannan Devan tea plantation during the British era. The newlywed knight and his wife Eleanor Isabel came to Munnar in the winter of 1894.

Mesmerized by the beauty of Munnar, Isabel requested her husband to bury her remains in Munnar after her death. Isabel fell victim to the cholera outbreak and had a premature death at the age of 24. Thus, with an aching heart, the knight buried his wife’s body on the hilltop to fulfill her wish. The CSI church was originally built by the knight in memory of his wife, in front of a small hill where she was buried. Later a cemetery was constructed in the vicinity, exclusively for British planters.

Devikulam is a village located 6km from Munnar. The village is famous for its scenic beauty and tea plantations. The temperature is usually low, and there is fog all year round. Devikulam has ideal homestays and camping spots if you wish to stay away from the bustle of Munnar town. Devikulam – Bodimet marks the state boundary of Kerala-Tamil Nadu and provides access to the hill station of Kodaikanal.

Echo Point & Matupetti Dam

Moving via the Munnar- top station route is the famous Matupetti dam and Echo point. The eucalyptus plantation on either side of the dam with the casual lake setting provides you with an unforgettable experience. Boating Facilities are available in the dam if you are in the mood for a casual drift. Handicraft merchants, fruit vendors, and leisure activities on the dam make sure you are having the time of your life.

Echo point is nearby the Mattupetti dam and provides scenic beauty of evergreen forests and wildlife of the Western Ghats. As the name suggests, shout at the mountain, and nature will treat you back with an echo! Maybe it’s nature’s way of reminding us to be kind to one another.

Kundala Dam

Kundala dam is another dam stands in the Munnar top station route. The lake is situated adjacent to a horse track and afield of teak trees, thus, making it the ideal spot for camping with your family members. One can try out kayaking along with regular boating as well. This is one of the main sightseeing location on roadtrip from Cochin to Munnar.

Top Station

The top station is the highest point in Munnar and offers a splendid climate all year round. Forest-themed resorts offering jeep trekking for adventurers are a common sight. The forests of the top station are home to the infamous wild tusker, “Padayappa,” occasionally seen displaying his large wide tusks to the tourists. The top station marks another border point of the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The wide border consists of individual hamlets with integrated cultures. Strawberry farms are a common sight. Step farming is another practice to counter frequent landslides. The viewpoint offers a splendid view of the lake and towering mountains.

Eravikulam National Park

A Cochin to Munnar sightseeing trip is incomplete without a visit to Rajamala. Rajamala is located on the Munnar-Pollachi route. It is part of Eravikulam national park, the first national park of Kerala. 

Eravikulam is also spread through nearby national parks of mathikettanchola, pambadumchola, anamudi Chola, and the wildlife sanctuaries chinnar and kurinjimala. Visitors flock in for the blooming of Neelakurinji happening every 12 years. Neelakurinji ( Strobilanthes kunthiyana)  is a shrub blooming purple flower which is endemic to the Western Ghats. The Paliyan tribal people of Western Ghats use the flower to calculate their age. The purple flower blooming over an entire valley gives it the name ‘Neelakurinji’ or ‘Blue Mountain.’

Rajagiri hills are most famous for their population of the endangered Varayadu or Nilgiri Thar. It is an endangered species of goat endemic to the Western Ghats. It is the state animal of Tamil Nadu. Conservation efforts have increased the population of the Thar, and an occasional flock led by the female for grazing can be spotted at most times. The park is also famous for its population of Nilgiri marten, the only species of martens in south Asia. It is endemic to the hills of Nilgiris and part of Western Ghats.

Moving on through the refreshing tea meadows of Munnar, which offers you picturesque locations for the perfect holiday memory, the next destination is the village of Marayur. The villages of Marayur-Kanthalloor are famous for their jaggery and sandalwood plantations. Keep an eye on the sandal plantations, and you will catch a glimpse of the Chital or spotted deer curiously watching you. The forests also contain populations of Water buffalo or the Asian buffalo, Indian langur, and Malabar giant squirrels.

The town of Marayur offers a rich shopping experience for nature lovers. Bazars are full of fresh fruits and vegetables, handicraft products, sandalwood products, elephant rides, and jaggery makers. Small-scale industrial huts are where the famous Marayur jaggery is prepared. The taste of freshly made jaggery is sure to fill your taste buds with joy.

Being a favourite of hill station lovers, Kerala State Road Transport (KSRTC) operates several buses from Cochin to Munnar. Pre-booking seat facility is offered by KSRTC, ensuring your view of the mountain remains uninterrupted. Kerala State transport stand is located at old Munnar, easily accessible for all tourists while in Munnar. KSRTC also offers a budget stay inside a AC buses at Munnar.

Travelling to Munnar from Cochin airport takes more than 4 hours for 106 km. There are various Taxi Cabs available at Airport for Airport to Munnar Travel. You can check with the Taxi counters available at the airport. However, no active public transport services are provided to Munnar from Cochin Airport.

The closest railway station to Munnar is the Angamaly railway station. There are no active train services from Cochin to Munnar.

This is the cheapest stay option in Munnar. Several old KSRTC buses are renovated to make dorm rooms in Munnar. Each bus have 16 bunk beds with common toilet facilities. Each bed costs Rs. 100 per night. Pillow, Blanket and Bedsheet are charged extra in this facility. You can either directly go to KSRTC station in Munnar to book the bed or call on 04865230201 for more details.

FAQs on Cochin to Munnar Trip

You can go to Munnar from Cochin by driving through the hilly roads. There are Buses and Cabs available from Cochin KSRTC Bus stand to Munnar.

If you are a beach person, love crowds and night person Cochin will be best choice. Munnar is a hilly destination and having a great climate. If you are a mountain person and love to be away from crowds, Munnar is better.

Munnar is at a distance of 126 km from Cochin and will take 4 hours to reach by car.

Wayanad and Munnar are two famous hill stations in Kerala. Wayanad is less crowded compared to Munnar. Munnar have best luxury resorts compared to Wayanad. Also Munnar is situated in higher altitude than Wayanad.

If you love beaches and backwaters, Allepey is the best choice. If you love Mountains and remote places Munnar is the best bet. Munnar is less connected to major cities than Allepey.

Your Kochi to Munnar Travel Guide – Transport, Sightseeing, Where to Eat & More!

One of the most scenic journeys in Kerala is the one from Kochi to Munnar. As you wind your way up this picturesque hill station, you can enjoy some of the best scenery that Kerala has to offer. 

Rolling hills, miles of jungle, spice plantations, wildlife, and waterfalls all await you here! 

This was by far my favourite drive on my visit to God’s Own Country with India Someday. Although the journey times were really long, the amazing sightseeing and tasty lunch stop along the way helped to pass the time.

What is the distance between Kochi and Munnar? 

Kochi is located around 126 kilometres from Munnar. So, a drive without any traffic will take you a minimum of 3/4 hours. 

But, as Munnar is elevated at around 1,500 metres above sea level, you’ll need to wind your way up along long winding roads. 

As some of these bends can be quite tricky for two cars to pass and there are often road works, there will be hold-ups along the way. Not to mention that the road is super busy due to hundreds of tourist cars visiting and leaving, hence lots of traffic. 

So, the journey time between Kochi to Munnar will be around 5 hours and, if you add in sightseeing, around 6. During peak tourist times (like festivals) my driver told me it could take all day. 

If you’re heading here on a day trip I would leave as early as possible to avoid peak traffic times! 

When is the best time to visit Munnar? 

Personally, I always avoid peak times to travel. I always find this makes hotel prices go up threefold and the place is so busy you can’t really enjoy it! But, it couldn’t be helped this time.

While I was visiting, it was a Navratri Festival in October and so a lot of domestic tourists were visiting Munnar over this time. That made the roads extremely busy as well. 

Like a domino effect, all the attractions were packed out and the roads were jammed too!

The peak season of Kerala is September to March which is the best time to visit for the weather. But, I’d expect big crowds. 

April – June is the summer months, which although hot, is the perfect time for wildlife spotting. It will be busier due to everyone wanting to escape the heat in the clouds.

Another great time to visit is in Monsoon from July – September. The rains will fall, making all the jungle nice and lush, plus there will be lots of waterfalls to enjoy in full force! 

I would suggest the in-between seasons at the end of March or the end of September. This is still counted as the ‘off’ season so everything will be cheaper and you’ll avoid some of the heavier crowds too. 

How to reach Munnar from Kochi

The easiest and most convenient way to reach Munnar from Kochi is to self-drive. This means you can take your time, stop where you like, and have the freedom to go sightseeing.

But, there is the option to hire a driver if you don’t plan on driving and also take a shared taxi too. 

Public government buses are available but I’d recommend this as your final option or if you’re on a shoestring budget.  

Do trains run from Kochi to Munnar Hill Station?

Although Munnar is technically a hill station in India, that boat sailed as soon as the British left. 

There used to be a train that would run up to Munnar and even Top Station, but now both of those are relics and what is left was moved to museums. 

In fact, the old train station in Munnar is now a factory and what is left of Top Station is simply cement!

The only way that you can get up to Munnar from Kochi is to drive up the winding hills by car or bus…

There are public buses but there aren’t really many government/private buses (like on  redbus.in ) designed for tourists to get here. 

So, you’ll need to do a bit of working out in order to reach where you’re trying to go.

If you decide to take the public buses, you will probably end up getting around three buses in total and the journey will take around 5/6 hours without stopping. 

Speaking from personal experience with riding hundreds of hours on local buses, I wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re on a tight budget! Imagine honking, crazy drivers going way to fast and lugging all your luggage around in the sweaty heat…

The whole journey will probably cost you less than 100 rupees though so it is a bargain if you’re willing to make the effort. 

Kochi to Munnar by self driving, taxi or a tour

If you have your own car and can self-drive up to Munnar, this is your best bet! 

Not only will having your own transport mean you have more freedom and can stop where you like but when you get to Munnar all your sightseeing can be done by car too. 

Most tourists tend to hire a private taxi or sharing a car to make their way up from Fort Kochi to Munnar. Or, you can do a day trip to Munnar too.

To me, hiring a car makes the most sense as once you’re here, getting around can be quite a challenge without one. 

But, if you are backpacking or you’re without a means of transport, have a look at some of these day trips to Munnar here;

Places to stop en-route to Munnar for sightseeing

It isn’t really hard to pinpoint the popular sightseeing stops on the way up to Munnar. 

As you wind your way up you can spot the masses of crowds with selfie sticks and see the cars parked up for what seems like miles along the roads before you get there. 

But, although there are many, not all sightseeing spots are created equal here! 

I will go through all the ones worth visiting on your way from Kochi to Munnar and the ones to absolutely avoid. 

Cheeyappara Falls

Our first stop on the way up was the amazing Cheeyappara Falls which are around 300 metres high! 

As soon as you arrive you’ll spot cars stopping, market stalls selling all sorts of hats and selfie sticks, food stalls, and of course the big crowd at the bottom of the waterfall.

The best time to visit the falls is during or after Monsoon season and you see it crashing to the floor during this time! In Summer, this may be dried up due to the lack of rainfall.

Once you arrive, head to the viewing platform and join everyone else taking photos and selfies! I was lucky to get a photo by myself for two minutes, although that was mainly because people were staring at me instead haha!

It’s FREE to visit and worth a photo stop, but you probably won’t spend more than ten minutes here unless you want to hang around.

Valara Falls

The Valara Falls is another famous waterfall stop just a little bit further up from Cheeyappara falls.

When we first arrived I couldn’t believe the strength of the waterfall. But, my driver told me that this was ‘weak’ compared to the water flow in Monsoon! 

It’s FREE to visit but you can’t trek down to see the waterfall or get anywhere near close.

This is really just a viewing platform where you can take a quick photo from the road. As there is just a wall and no real space to view, just be careful of fast cars tearing past! At this point, you’ll be over 1000 feet above sea level.

Karadipara View point

At this point, you’re pretty much in Munnar. But, this viewpoint is a great introduction to your journey here.

Karadipara is a restaurant stop that has a fantastic vantage point of all the rolling hills and the peaks of the mountain tops; you can see for miles and miles into the distance.

The restaurant serves up an amazing spicy chai and cheap eats if you wanted to stop for lunch there with the view.

But, if you want to just stop for a photo, you can pay 10 rupees to head down onto the viewing platform. 

It makes an amazing photo spot and you can spend as long as you like there!

Stop at a spice garden

There are many spice gardens that are advertised on the way up to Munnar and most are pretty much the same.

You go on a quick tour of the spice farm where they tell you what spices grow there and what they use them for. You can also try some of the organic spices and you exit through the gift shop!

There will be all sorts of spices to buy but just make sure that they are the genuine product and you’re not getting ripped off. 

You’ll also see a load of Ayurvedic and chocolate shops too – my guesthouse owner said to avoid them as most of them aren’t good value for money or sell genuine products. It’s best to wait until you get to Munnar and visit a recommended outlet… 

DON’T STOP at the elephant camps 

Please. Don’t stop at the elephant riding camps! These are to be avoided at all costs. 

The treatment of the elephants who have been domesticated for tourism is barbaric and there has been lots of research that shows that riding elephants is bad for their health. 

In Munnar, you really don’t need to visit an elephant camp to see one. If you’re lucky, you can spot a wild elephant on your way up to Munnar in the fields! It’s a common sight here.

It’s far more special to see an elephant roaming free in the wild than it ever will be to see one who is unhappy and forced to entertain tourists. 

So, I beg you to avoid them. The more people who boycott this practice the better it will be for the elephants here.

Where to stop for lunch between Cochin and Munnar

On our way up to Munnar, my driver stopped at a traditional Malayali restaurant ‘Clay Oven’ which is really popular but most importantly hygienic and clean. 

I was recommended to have the traditional Malayali feast on a banana leaf and, they’re not lying when they say it is a FEAST!

I had dishes upon dishes of curries, chutneys, and sauces, a massive serving of rice, papad, banana chips, a banana, and even desserts too! It was a banquet that was all incredibly tasty.

I then washed it down with a freshly squeezed pineapple juice and by that time I was ready to enter a food coma for the next few hours haha!

All the food and the drink only cost me around 350 rupees which was a bargain. I would highly recommend visiting on your way up, but come hungry. You’ll need the room.

Where to stay in Munnar

If you’re looking for the best hotels in Munnar, I would avoid staying in the city centre. Yes, the accommodation is really cheap around that area but Munnar city really isn’t attractive.

It’s busy, with lots of traffic and buildings pretty much built on top of each other. 

If you want to really experience the serenity of Munnar, I would recommend staying a little outside of the city in the countryside. 

Mistletoe Homestay was a gorgeous family-run property and each room had breathtaking views of the rolling hills from the balcony. 

One of my favourite moments was sipping on coffee overlooking the views! I felt so lucky I could enjoy them from the comfort of my own bedroom.

The rooms were spacious with a desk and a huge bathroom with a powerful shower too! 

I ate here more often than not and the homemade food was divine. I always asked for a surprise and the meals just got better and better.

Things to do in and around Munnar when you get here

The journey from Kochi to Munnar is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the attractions in Munnar itself. 

It’s a huge emerald green paradise that goes on for miles and you’ll find incredible places to visit around every corner! 

Here are some of my favourite spots in Munnar that you need to add to your itinerary;

Visit a tea plantation & have a tea tasting

Did you even visit Munnar if you didn’t visit a tea plantation?

This is one of the top things I think you should do while you’re here but it can be difficult to find the right one to visit.

It all depends on your preferences really. If you just want to take photos of one, there are endless possibilities. You can just stop on the road and take photos.

But, if you want to learn about how tea is made, have a tea tasting, hike around the fields or enter the tea fields. You’ll need to do some planning.

I off-roaded on a jeep safari through Lockhart Tea Plantation with Route 49 adventures.

They had a permit so we could enter the private areas, we learned about how tea is made at the factory and we then topped it off with a tea tasting to finish. It was perfect as we avoided the crowds too. 

But, as well as Lockhart there is also the KDGP museum which is run by the oldest and largest organisation here in Munnar. So, the choice is yours. 

Hiking will be a completely different ball game but easily organised with your homestay or a travel company in the area. Read my guide for more details.

Visit the border of Tamil Nadu at Top Station

Top Station is the most popular route in Munnar and so it comes with the most traffic and crowds.

In fact, despite it being one of the most visited tourist attractions I wasn’t too impressed. Maybe it was the weather and the fact we couldn’t see a view, or the fact we were stuck in traffic jams the whole time. But, I just couldn’t see what the big hype was all about. 

Top Station used to be a trading post during the British era. Here, you’re actually on the border of Tamil Nadu and so the British used it as a trading post with Madras (now Chennai). Nowadays, it’s a popular viewpoint where you can wander around and take in the sights…if you get lucky.

More often than not, as you’re so high up, you’ll mostly see clouds! So, I would leave as early as possible before they roll in. 

You’ll also walk through what seems like miles of food stands, chai stalls, and gift shops. So, you’re being hassled the whole time.

But, if you stick around, the clouds do move and sometimes make way for some pretty views. So, grab a chai and see.

Spot a Nilgiri Tahr at Eravikulam National Park 

The Nilgiri Tahr used to be thriving in Kerala, but when the British arrived their intense hunting practices nearly made them extinct! 

This is until the Kerala Government decided to protect the area and make it a national park. 

The Nilgiri Tahr is still on the endangered list but Eravikulam National Park is home to the biggest population of them in the entire world.

You don’t go on a wildlife safari or anything, you walk a few kilometers into the park. Seeing a deer is not guaranteed but it is possible. I have pictures to prove it!

Swim in Lakkam Falls

Just down the road from the oldest national park is Lakkam Falls. These actually fall from the Eravikulam plateau but you don’t need a ticket to the park in order to see it. Tickets only cost 20 rupees.

My favourite part of these falls was the fact that you could swim inside and cool down from the heat. Another surprise was that fish nibbled at my feet, a bonus of a natural fish spa!

These falls truly are spectacular and if you didn’t want to swim, they make an awesome photo stop.

Watch a Kalaripayattu performance

There isn’t a lot to do for entertainment in the evenings in Munnar, but there are a few cultural performances you can watch. 

As I had already seen a Kathakali Dance in Fort Kochi, India Someday and my driver recommended that I check out a Kalaripayattu performance.

This ancient practice originates from the warriors of Kerala and as soon as I walked in, it looked like I was going to watch gladiators at the colosseum! 

This martial arts takes years of practice and you can watch the warriors sparse with sticks, swords, and even jump through fire.

This will be helpful for many newcomers. But the price of kerala feast is not really that much. Actually you can get one for 100 Rs or 150Rs. If anyone says that it is 350 just dumpnit and go to another shop. And never miss a chance to sip some hot and strong tea with bread omlet when you visit Munnar or any other hill station in Kerala. You can get it from any shack shops on the roadside.

Kochi to Munnar: A Day Trip to the Hills of Kerala

An article detailing how to get from Kochi to Munnar to explore the wonderful hills and tea plantations of Kerala.

After one week of awesome luxury aboard the Deccan Odyssey Train , it was time to broaden our horizons and see a different side of India and what better destination to do so than Kerala, a state known as God’s Own Country.

Kochi to Munnar: Bus, Private Transfer or Hitchike?

All Kerala itineraries usually start in Fort Kochi and involve going to the Kerala Backwaters in Alappuzha (Alleppey) before heading east towards Munnar.

But how do you get from Kochi to Munnar, Raphael?

Well, if you’re traveling outside of a tour group, you might be puzzled and confused when it comes to how to get from Kochi to Munnar since there are no direct buses and private transfers are usually very pricey.

But hey, this is India we’re talking about. Surely there must be an obscure local bus from Kochi to Munnar, right?

Luckily, my friend Mel is a complete planning freak so she did some research about it: from Fort Kochi you need to take a ferry (which costs 4 INR) to Ernakulam, a city located a few minutes away from Fort Kochi and from where the bus station is located.

Buses to Munnar leave roughly every hour or two (depending on the season) and will set you back 100 INR. The journey can take up to 5 hours so bring some snacks and yes, tons of water.

Buses are very basic (no A/C, no toilets) but you will get to experience the real India so that’s a big plus for me!!! You can read Mel’s details of the bus journey from Ernakulam to Munnar here !

From Munnar, we went onwards to Bangalore (12 hours bus ride!!!) then to the ruins of Hampi in Karnataka  so you could always do the same journey in reverse my friends.

If you ask me, the best views of the waterfalls can be seen from the tea plantations on the way to it so I won’t judge you if you don’t make it all the way to the bottom of the falls.

Alternatively, you can hitchhike from Kochi to Munnar. I mean, it will probably take you double the time but it’s all part of the adventure my friends!

Who knew getting from Kochi to Munnar could be so difficult, right?

Trekking in Munnar: Exploring the Tea Plantations

During our first full day in Munnar, my friend Mel from A Broken Backpack (be sure to check her blog, she’s quite funny despite being a French Canadian!!!) and I decided to just board a random Tuk Tuk, ask him to drive east from Munnar and then just ask him to drop us off near the most scenic tea plantation (which ended up being like 10KM away from Munnar).

It was time to put our legs to good use and loose all that weight from the luxury train!!! And yes, I know what you’re thinking: “so wait, you just asked the Tuk Tuk guy to drop you off at a random spot”? 

But no, it wasn’t just a random spot, it was a very pictursque random spot!!! There’s an infinite number of those in Munnar so my best advice is just to pay by KM, ask to be dropped off whenever you see something that really fancies your eye and then start trekking from there back to Munnar.

Trekking in Munnar without any clear destination or objective in mind is a truly beautiful experience in my opinion as you make your way through the tea plantations (the ones we encountered were all free to enter and you were able to walk trough them) and discovering new panoramic viewpoints constantly.

The best part? All the friendly local workers we encountered were super friendly and they were so curious about the fact that I was wearing a mundu , a traditional Kerala skirt (yes, I know it isn’t  technically a skirt but you know what I mean!!!) for men.

Am I a Mexican India, an Indian Mexican or both? You be the judge my friend!!!

One Day in Munnar: The Best Things to Do and See in Munnar

During our second day in Munnar, my friend and I decided to check out all of the main touristy sights located near Munnar town so if you’re short on time, you can skip Trekking in Munnar and instead hit these 3 best places to visit in Munnar in 1 Day.

We recommend hiring a Tuk Tuk for the entire day instead of hiring one from Point A to B since it would be more convenient and hassle-free. And yes, be sure to haggle for the best price! You can read some of my best haggling tips here my friends!

The first stop in your list of the best places to visit in Munnar in 1 Day is Chithirapuram, a hill town located 13 KM from Munnar (this is also the furthest place you’ll go this day since the other stops are located before it) where you can enjoy the quintessential tea plantation experience.

Take a walk and enjoy the peaceful nature of it before heading off to the second stop on the best places to visit in Munnar in 1 Day: the Atukkad Waterfalls. These falls are located between Munnar and Chithirapuram and the trail to reach them is just pure beauty!!!

And finally, the last stop on the best places to visit in Munnar in 1 Day is the Pothamedu Viewpoint (5KM south of Munnar), a beautiful place that is the locals’ favorite for watching the sunset and well, it isn’t hard to see why.

Located at a high elevation, here you can see how the sun hides behind the tea plantations and the Munnar hills giving you an unprecedented view of Kerala. Kerala is known as God’s Own Country and sunsets like this are one of the reasons why.

Where to Stay in Munnar, India

One thing to look out when looking for accommodation in Munnar is that Munnar itself is a really basic city with no beautiful attractions of its own: everything worth seeing (including the tea plantations) are actually a few KM outside of Munnar itself.

This, of course, includes some of the best hotels and resorts in all of India. During my most recent stay in Munnar, my friend Mel and I were hosted at the Kaivalyam Retreat , a luxury property located 7KM south of Munnar itself. Cochin currently known as Kochi is one of the major seaports in India. It is the beginning point for all the Kerala Holiday and Tourist packages across the world. The vacation spots around Kochi incorporate Fort Cochin, Cherai Beach, Fishing Nets, the highly praised Marine drive, and so on.

Athirapally Waterfall

Athirapally fall is among the most loved tourist attractions in the state. It is one of the most well-known falls and is additionally the biggest one Kerala has to offer. In God’s own country, Kalady lies; it is the birthplace of one of the best Indian philosophers. Kalady is a well-known pilgrim centre which got well known as Adi Sankaracharya’s birthplace. Situated close to Kochi in Kerala, Kalady is devoted to Sankaracharya and his memory. It is a spot that celebrates both culture and knowledge. It gives the most extreme significance to its history and has set itself up as one of the most significant attractions for pilgrims. There are two significant places of worship situated in Kalady, devoted to the memory of Adi Sankaracharya.

Kodanad/Kaprikad Elephant Camp

Kodanad Elephant Sanctuary and Training Centre is located in a rural village in Kerala’s Ernakulam district. It is a popular tourist destination and also a picnic spot. It is the only elephant rescue & training centre in Kerala that specializes in rescuing as well as training baby and grown elephants.

Here, the recently captured elephants are kept for training. During the 1950s and the1960s, it was recognized as one of the biggest elephant training centres that captured elephants from close by forests but in 1970, elephant capturing was prohibited by Indian Government and since then this elephant sanctuary is only used as a training centre for rescued elephants.

Why we don’t support elephant camps

We do not support elephant camps– the reason being the process that is used to train them.

The hurtful training process that elephants go through to become a part of the tourism industry is heartbreaking. Baby elephants are kept away from their mothers and are kept in a really tiny place, then beaten with sticks spiked with nails and bullhooks. The elephants are also kept starved and sleep-deprived, in order to break their spirits so they become submissive to the humans.

This is a conventional practice in most training centres, and many elephants that you will see in these camps or sanctuaries have undergone this dreadful procedure. This is the reason you must give elephant riding a miss.

If any elephant ‘sanctuary’ or training centre or camp provides elephant rides, painting shows or circuses, you can be sure the elephants have gone through horrendous abuse to do what they are doing for our fun.

While a few places market themselves as humane and claim they do not use bullhooks or any harmful object, the fact that the elephants are being trained simply means that they are being harmed in many ways.

Thattekkad bird sanctuary

The Thattekkad bird sanctuary is in the Kothamangalam area of Idukki. It is one of the popular landmarks in the state of Kerala. It is home to nearly 500 types of fascinating birds. At the height of 35-523m over the ocean level, this magnificent bird sanctuary is arranged at Njayqapilli top by the side of the Periyar River. It was described by Salim Ali “Thattekad in the 1930s as the most extravagant bird living space in peninsular India.” Prior to it, it was insignificant in the physical map of Kerala, today it pulls in bird lovers from over the globe. Furthermore, the credit goes to the hard work of Dr Salim Ali who found the incomparable capability of this tropical deep evergreen forest as a haven for birds.

This heaven of bird lovers is situated in the thick tropical evergreen and deciduous forests and grassland patches. Thattekkad is full of teak, rosewood, mahogany and many different trees. The beautiful landscape of the park houses some rare types of birds. The unprecedented birds which are regularly found in Thattekkad are Crimson-Throated Barbet, Sunbird, Gray Heron, Bee-eater, Shrike, Black-winged Kite, and the Night Heron. There are birds like Indian Roller, common snipe, cuckoo, crow, jungle nightjar, grey drongo, kite, Malabar trogon, wood-pecker; large pied wagtail, baya sparrow, grey jungle fowl, Indian hill myna, jungle babbler, robin bird, and darter can be easily found in this spot.

Neriamangalam Bridge

The bridge was constructed in 1935 during the period of Travancore Maharaja and is an entry point for the high ranges of Idukki.

The bridge known as ‘SethuLaksmi’ reminds us of the mid-twentieth century, the ranges of Travancore Rajas. ‘Ranikallu’ and the ‘Ranicurves’ are the famous spots here that are the remnants of historic memories. Built over the Periyar River, the bridge connects Idukki as well as Ernakulam.

Cheeyappara waterfalls and Valara Waterfalls

The view of Cheeyappara waterfalls stunningly beautiful. Seeing water gushing through the mountains and the sound of nothing else except for nature will clear your mind.

The falls of Kerala are other incredible attractions for nature lovers. Huge numbers of Kerala’s’ most exquisite falls are just active in the rainy season however there are a lot of others open in the winter. These two waterfalls are seasonal waterfalls that are open during monsoon. Valara falls near the town of Adimali in Idukki are perhaps the greatest fall in India and are a well-known tourist attraction.

The Cheeyappara waterfall and Valara Waterfall are one of the most excellent trekking areas in the Idukki region. Many individuals visit these falls while they are on their way to Munnar and it is gradually transforming into a tourist hotspot. There is a thick growth of trees all around and a few uncommon types of plants, as well as animals, can be found in the region. The Cheeyappara Waterfall gushes down in 7 levels and is really an incredible sight to behold. This waterfall has rich greenery encompassing it and is a lovely picnic area.

Kallar Vattiyar

Home to misty waterfalls, winding paths, and an unending expanse of tea plantations, Munnar in Kerala is one of the most popular places to visit in South India. Blessed with pristine valleys, endangered flora and fauna, calming lakes, and verdant forests, it may very well be one of the most beautiful places in India too.

Situated at an altitude of 1600 metres above the sea level, Munnar is a picturesque hill station and town in the Idukki district of Kerala. Accessed via an encircling road that passes through a myriad of scenic waterfalls, thriving vegetation, and mesmerising views of the Western Ghats, it is a sightseeing gem that once served as a summer resort for the British colonists.

Being the first stop on my Kerala trip in February last year, I spent two days exploring Munnar with my best friend. Meandering around acres of tea estates nestled between humongous mountains covered with low-lying clouds, I instantly comprehended Kerala’s much enthused title of God’s own country. So much so that I nearly teared up at the thought of leaving.

However, planning our trip to Munnar wasn’t equally wistful. There is a lot of information out there about what to do and see in Munnar, but barely anything that clarifies the mystery that Munnar’s layout is. I kid you not, I must have spent hours looking at the map of Munnar and reading Kerala guides after guides to just understand which area to stay in.

So, if you are planning to visit Munnar and are in the same boat as I once was, then worry not. In this guide, you will find all the essential topics ranging from the different areas to stay in Munnar, how to get there, best places to visit, which tea plantations to go to, where to eat and so on.

Where exactly is Munnar in India?

Munnar is the tea capital of Kerala, the southernmost state in India. Renowned for its natural beauty and wealth of pictorial sights, Kerala is one of the most incredible destinations to visit in Asia. Bordering the Arabian Sea on the west; it is an Indian state that is admired globally for its humid tropical wet climate.

Munnar is located at the union of Muthirapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala mountain streams in the South-Western Ghats of India. Its name fittingly translates to “three rivers” in Malayalam, the local language of Kerala. Sitting on the Kochi-Dhanushkodi National Highway (N.H. 49), Munnar is around 130 km from Kochi. Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu is also close at a distance of roughly 157 km.

Although Munnar is commonly referred to as a hill station and trains did go up to its town centre and beyond once, that is simply not possible anymore. There was a dreadful flooding in the area in 1924, which ended up destroying much of the railway and ropeway, connecting Munnar to other major Indian cities. You can find remains of the old railway tracks on the Kundala-Top Station route even today.

The longstanding railway station, however, now operates as the local office of Tata Tea. The old platform outside it has also been converted into a road. Yet, this doesn’t mean that Munnar isn’t easily reachable nowadays. Being one of the most sought-after hill stations in South India, Munnar is still well connected to nearby airports and stations via road.

How to best reach there?

Whether you are travelling from domestic Indian cities or visiting directly from international destinations, there are many ways to get to the town of Munnar. Here are the most common transport options to help you decide the best mode for you:

Since Munnar doesn’t have an airport of its own, the nearest one that you can fly into is in Kochi. Cochin International Airport is located about 125 km away from Munnar. It is well connected to most cities in India and around the world. From there, you can hire a private taxi to Munnar directly when you arrive or pre-book one and have it ready for you at arrivals. Check flights to Cochin International Airport here!

I flew into Kochi from Mumbai early in the morning and just booked the transfer to our hotel in Munnar at the airport itself. There is a booking counter right after baggage claim in the arrivals lounge and you can easily get fixed price transports from there (No, haggling wouldn’t make a difference). The entire process is really organised and hassle free as you get a booking slip upon payment and meet your driver outside.

CG’s tip: Just make sure to have the proper address of your accommodation with you and not of Munnar town simply. Munnar refers to both the town and its surrounding areas, so accommodations are sometimes further out or nearer to the centre. Depending on where yours is based, you might be asked to pay a little extra or less, so it is better to check beforehand. 

Our accommodation was actually higher up from the general drop-off point, so our AC taxi with two large suitcases cost us INR 3350 for the drop-off . If you are travelling alone or are tight on budget, then you can even get a bus transfer. There are several bus companies running frequent buses between Cochin International Airport and Munnar. Though, none of them are direct as of yet. If you would prefer a direct bus, then you can head to the closeby Aluva bus stop (12 km away) and get a bus to Munnar from there .

The closest railway station to Munnar is in Aluva (110 km), which is slightly nearer compared to the centre of Kochi. Angamaly (Kalady) Railway Station is also at a similar distance. But if you are looking for better connectivity to other parts of India with frequent express trains, then Ernakulam might be the best option.

The Ernakulam Railway Station in Kochi is at a distance of 130 km from Munnar and has more daily trains arriving from faraway cities like Mumbai and Delhi . The Madurai Railway Station in Tamil Nadu is also around 135 km away, so you can check online and see which one might be a better choice for your departure city.

Irrespective of which railway station do you arrive at out of the mentioned above, there are onward buses and taxis available for Munnar from all. You can either walk to the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus stand near your station and take a local bus, or get a prepaid taxi from arrivals / book a taxi from Kochi to Munnar online .

Snuggled between splendid hills, Munnar is one of the most beautiful places to drive to. Regardless of how you choose to get there, chances are that you will be arriving into town by road. One of the popular ways to travel to Munnar is hiring a car to self-drive or booking a taxi . Since most places to see in Munnar are very spread out, I personally think having your own vehicle can be a bliss whilst there.

Munnar is also well connected to numerous state and national highways across India via public transport. You can book buses online via redBus or turn up at a stop and buy a ticket in person. However, the local, state run buses by KSRTC might be a better choice as they operate more frequently to mountainous areas where many public buses don’t often go. When taking a KSRTC bus from Kochi to Munnar, you can expect to pay somewhere around INR 130 per person.

CG’s tip: If arriving in a private vehicle, do not forget to make pit-stops on the way to enjoy the abundant viewpoints as you gain elevation and snap pictures by the oodles of waterfalls that will surprise you en route. If coming by bus, then get a window seat and purely admire the verdant visions from your ride!

Onward Transport from Munnar

When it’s nearly time to leave, you can simply arrange for the transport in Munnar itself. Our next stop on the Kerala trip was Kumarakom and we got a private taxi for INR 3300 in Munnar town the night before. There are various travel agents and ticketing shops around town from where you can book your preferred onward transfer.

Buses operate daily from / to Kumarakom, Alleppey, Kochi, Coimbatore, Madurai and more. You can browse bus routes on the KSRTC website here. Alternatively, you can book a taxi or hire a car to anywhere you would like to go.

What is the best time to visit Munnar?

Munnar is one of those destinations that can be enjoyed throughout the year due to its adequate climate. Whether you are looking to find some solace during the scorching Indian heat in summer, or are thinking of a mountainous getaway during the winter season in India; Munnar, being a hill station, is a treat anyhow.

Summer (March to May)

Summer starts arriving in Munnar from March and usually lasts till May. With temperatures ranging between 19-35 degrees Celsius , it is a great time to visit Munnar and enjoy the cool air amidst acres of tea plantations. Early morning and night time in Munnar are generally cool throughout the year, so you will still get a hill station feel even in summer.

Munnar is also known to have less humidity and rainfall during the summer months. Because of this, you might notice a surge of prices when travelling to Munnar during this time as many domestic tourists head there to escape the heat. From hiking in the Western Ghats to going camping and exploring waterfalls, there are a plethora of activities that you can take part in in summer.

This time of the year is also when many seasonal activities like paragliding, rock climbing, rappelling and other adventure sports are available. You can also go on a trek to Anamudi – the highest point in India (outside the Himalayan Mountain Ranges) at 2,695 metres above the ground.

CG’s tip: Munnar could still experience light rain showers in the summer. It is a good idea to carry a light sweater or jacket and an umbrella or raincoat for your visit.

Monsoon (June to September)

Monsoon season in Munnar comes with its own charm. The arrival of shimmering rain transforms the sprawling tea estates and lush forests of Munnar into an even more alluring, verdant and vibrant scene. Cloudy skies and heavy waterfalls further add to the overall atmosphere and make way for a pleasant time.

Munnar experiences heavy rainfall with an average of 533 mm rain during the months of June and July. If you are planning to visit Munnar during monsoon s , then keep in mind that many touristic activities might not be available . The roads leading to Munnar and around it can also be slippery during this time, so I would advise to head there only during the day and not at night.

Having said that, most accommodations in Munnar are typically cheaper during monsoon (due to off-season). You can even book a room overlooking the lush hills and enjoy the view with a hot cup of chai when the rain pours. The town in general is quieter too, so it can be a more relaxing time to visit. However, with rain comes leeches, so be careful when going into grassy areas during monsoon. There could also be road blockages and landslides in monsoon, so I would personally avoid visiting then.

CG’s tip: Trekking and hiking might not be possible to do in Munnar during monsoon as the surface becomes slippery. Though, it might still be a good idea to carry footwear that you would not mind getting dirty along with some warm clothing and an umbrella or raincoat .

Winter (October to February)

Winter is the best time to visit a hill station like Munnar. With crisp afternoons, icy dawns, and pleasant dusks, it is easy to understand why most tourists head to Munnar between October and February. The average temperature in Munnar during this time is around 10 degrees Celsius . But since it is situated on high terrains and is surrounded by vast empty lands, the air tends to feel colder than that.

I visited Munnar in the beginning of February and loved the climate. The afternoons were hot enough to wander around in a t-shirt, but a jacket was still needed during auto-rickshaw rides and at night time. From hiking, trekking and mountain climbing, to gazing at waterfalls and walking amidst tea plantations, there were plenty of activities to engage in. Just remember that it is the busiest tourist season in Kerala, so you should expect to see large crowds!

From the month of November to January, Munnar sometimes experiences occasional snowfall and cold waves with recorded temperature dipping down below 0 degrees Celsius. If you are planning to visit during the blooming of Neelakurinji flowers, then September to October might be a better choice. But if weather is the deciding factor, then I personally found February to have been perfect .

CG’s tip: When packing warm clothes for the trip, make sure to bring layers with you. Since the temperature increases in the day and then drops again at night, it would be comfortable to have easily changeable options with you.

How many days are enough?

In order to see the best of Munnar, I would recommend visiting there for three full days. I was there for a short trip so could only stay for two days and thus, ended up missing a few things that I would have liked to explore and do. 

Most places to see in Munnar are spread out from each other and divided into routes according to their location. You will most likely have to dedicate a day to each route in order to see the touristic spots in that area. Since I was there for only two days, I could only do two routes. 

We were able to see quite a few places, but I have to admit that I felt a little rushed on the first day. Since we made our way from Kochi airport on the same day, we could not begin the tour early in the morning and hence had limited time. Even though the driving distance between Kochi and Munnar isn’t that much, the duration often takes longer due to the windy, singular road.

However, if you are short on time, then it is possible to do a private day trip to Munnar from Kochi. You’ll usually begin your journey at sunrise and be back in Kochi for dinner!

Where to stay in Munnar?

This is one question that I struggled with the most when planning my trip to Kerala. Since Munnar refers to both the town and its general surrounding area, many nice hotels and resorts there are actually located far off the centre. Having not been there before, I personally found it difficult to gauge how far away would it be okay to stay in terms of food, transport, touristic sites and so on.

I had always dreamt of staying at a beautiful accommodation with panoramic views of the plantations and the greenery that Munnar is known for. However, resorts like that can be scattered anywhere up to 20-25 kilometres of radius from the centre. So, if you do not have your own vehicle with you, it can become costlier to get around and to access the restaurants in the town centre for dinner.

So how do you choose where to stay? Well, know that Munnar is divided into three broad areas that each have something different to offer. Depending on what your preference, budget and purpose of the trip is, you can see which one suits your needs best and stay there. 

Old Munnar is a small settlement that is not too far from Munnar Town. It is a decent area with many budget accommodations and some nice viewpoints close by. If you are arriving to Munnar in a bus from Kochi, then Old Munnar is where the buses would usually stop first. Being in close proximity with a bus stop, Old Munnar is a convenient area to get to and from.

I visited Old Munnar to see some photo points and spice gardens around there, and the neighbourhood looked acceptable. I wouldn’t go as far as saying that this is the best area to stay in Munnar. But if you are after economical properties that are away from the town centre noise and traffic, then Old Munnar is a decent choice. Especially since it is still close enough to easily get there if needed.

From the research that I have done, Grand Plaza and Greenview Holiday Inn look like the best options in Old Munnar. Greenview Holiday Inn is located right on the Main Street connecting Munnar to Kochi, while Grand Plaza has some rooms with beautiful views going for it. Other properties like Deshadan Mountain Resort and Fragrant Nature Munnar are a tad further away, but come with beautiful tea estate views and luxury that is otherwise rare in the hills. The Abad Copper Castle Resort is also nearby and has great balcony views.

Munnar Town

Munnar Town is the commercial centre of the area. If you are looking to stay somewhere with easy access to restaurants, accommodations, ATMs and other tourism related services, then this is the best option for you. Though, it may not be the most postcard worthy choice. 

With many hotel buildings and shops nearby, the view in Munnar Town is merely ordinary. I stayed at a walking distance from the main market there and felt like I missed on the proper hill station experience that one would go to a place like Munnar for. Most places to sightsee in Munnar are also not actually in the centre, so it certainly lacks when it comes to scenery.

However, with an array of eateries present in almost every nook, I admit that it was convenient to grab a quick albeit delicious bite at any given time and just go for an escapade. Containing the town’s main taxi stand near the market, Munnar town also ended up being a convenient base to hire auto rickshaws or private cabs for day tours in and around Munnar.

You can check out my hotel in Munnar Town here . We just went there to sleep, so I cannot say much about the service. But, it was easy on the pocket. If you are looking for something more decent, then the nearby Tea County looks great.

Out of Town Munnar

If commercialised areas aren’t your thing and you would rather enjoy the idyllic views that Munnar is mainly famous for, then staying a little out of town might be the best choice for you. With numerous guesthouses, hotels, resorts and treehouses (!!) spread around a 20-30 minute drive from Munnar, there is a wide list of options to choose from for every budget when staying out of town.

Depending on what you choose (eg: a guesthouse by the tea plantations), there may be less restaurants situated close to your accommodation. But since most places like that have an on-site restaurant, you can always double check before making a booking or request for arrangements in advance. Nearly all out of town properties also have a concierge service and can make transportation s and day-tour s bookings for you. 

CG’s tip: If you are taking a bus to get to Munnar, then make sure to check which bus stop is closest to it. A lot of the properties are in or near Munnar Bypass, so buses usually stop there first before heading to the town.

One of the best out of town properties is the luxurious Kaivalyam Wellness Retreat . It is situated midst a beautiful spice plantation and has free shuttle bus services to the main town. The Elixir Hills Suites Resort and Spa and Blanket Hotel Spa also look equally stunning. If you like waterfalls, then you can even get a room with a view of a mesmerising waterfall at Blanket Hotel Spa. Last but not the least, The Panoramic Getaway also is a great choice.

How to get around Munnar?

Since most places to see in Munnar are far (like covering national parks and forest reserves far!) from the centre, you cannot simply walk to a landmark and explore independently. If you have your own vehicle with you, then yes, you can drive in any direction you like. But for most travellers, you will either need to use a public bus, hire an auto-rickshaw (tuk-tuk) or a private taxi.

CG’s tip: If you want to drive your own vehicle or take a bus, then remember to write down the timings, directions and other necessary information for the way back. Since some spots are situated even higher up than Munnar town, cellular network doesn’t really work there so you might not have any connectivity from time-to-time.

Public buses run all the way to Top Station and are easy to find from the town centre. However, due to the winding nature of the road taking you there and the distance involved, these buses can take longer than anticipated. 

I wanted to have more freedom in regards to being able to stop wherever I liked, so I didn’t personally try this option.

Auto Rickshaw or Taxi Tour

Because there are so many wonderful spots and directions to go explore when in Munnar, getting around in a privately hired vehicle may be your best bet. Depending on your budget, you can book a taxi or auto rickshaw for a day tour and have the drivers take you around your chosen spots and back.

Since most touristic sights around Munnar fall on a certain route, you will find taxi and auto rickshaw drivers offering customised tours for various different ones. These drivers almost always carry a route card / brochure with pictures of the most famous spots with them, so you can have a look at the options and go with the one that interests you best.

Depending on how further you opt to go and the duration of your chosen tour, a price will then be quoted to you. Auto-rickshaw tours are typically around INR 700-1000 per day and the taxi charges are nearly double that. The asking price can be at least twice these figures (especially if you are not from around there) so don’t forget to haggle beforehand. 

The four most common routes are towards the Mattupetti, Marayoor (or Coimbatore), Cochin, and Thekkady directions. We decided to take the Top Station / Mattupetti tour on Day 1 from the town centre and it cost us INR 900 for an auto-rickshaw option. For Day 2, we chose the Cochin direction tour (with the same driver) which cost us INR 1000 with a hotel pick-up and drop off. 

The best thing about our tour was that the driver was very accommodating and didn’t mind stopping at random stops for pictures. He was also very knowledgeable about the places we visited, so it was like getting a tour guide and a driver for the price of one. But, keep in mind that none of these tours cover entrance fees for any attractions.

Renting a Motorbike

This used to be a very popular means of getting in and around Munnar up to a few years back. With an encircling road situated right in the lap of nature, adventure loving travellers often enjoyed touring around in pocket friendly motorbikes to explore Munnar on their own. However, due to reasons unclear, this is no longer possible.

Though based upon my chat with my auto-rickshaw driver and other locals, it did look like there are actually multiple causes behind it. There seemed to have been some accidents involving the rental motorbikes in the past (which for a hill station like Munnar sounds likely) and seemingly fatalities too. 

However, I was also told that since other tour operators and locals weren’t benefitting with tourists hiring their own vehicle for cheap, the government had to intervene and prohibit motorbike rentals.

Places to see and things to do in Munnar

Where do I even begin with this one? For a town oozing with touristic sights and hidden gems, saying that there is plenty to see in Munnar would be an understatement. From seeing elephants in their natural habitat to visiting the most elevated tea plantation in the world, here are some places that you can explore on your next trip to Munnar:

Mattupetty Dam

Mattupetty Dam is a concrete storage gravity dam that is used to generate hydroelectricity in the area. It was constructed in the Idukki district in the late 1940s and is said to be the first of its kind in the entire state of Kerala. 

Surrounded by lush forests and verdant tea plantations that reflect beautifully on the water in the lake, it is also a much renowned picnic spot in Munnar. There are several stalls offering local delicacies like roasted corn and coconut water around. You can also bring your own food there and enjoy it by the lakeshore.

Mattupetty Dam is also known for spotting Asiatic Elephants. Due to the water availability in the lake, many such wild animals and birds can be occasionally seen from there. And if you like adventures, then there is also a beautiful trekking path leading to nearby forests. Water activities like speed and motor boating in the dam are available too.

Distance: 13 km away from Munnar Route: Munnar to Top Station / Mattupetti Direction route Opening hours: 09:30 am – 05:00 pm

Echo Point is a beautiful spot located at an altitude of 600 feet on the banks of a glistening lake. With panoramic views of three mountain ranges and evergreen forests, it is one of those places that is destined to leave you spellbound. 

Echo Point is also famous for its natural phenomenon of echoing. So, when visiting, make sure to shout something by the shore of the lake and hear your voice reverberate back to you in sometime. I will admit that I didn’t really expect much from it at first, but the moment you first hear your own echo, it truly is enthralling.

You can also walk around the gentle slopes, trek, or go on a boating expedition while there. I, for one, even loved sitting and gazing at the incredible landscape in front. Echo Point is also home to misty low-lying clouds and some very tall trees.

CG’s tip: Echo Point is a beautiful spot to take Instagram photos in Munnar. So don’t forget to carry your camera with you and take some pictures to remember this natural paradise by.

Kundala Lake

Snuggled between green valleys, Kundala Lake is one of the most beautiful places to see in Munnar. Located at a height of 1700 metres above sea level, it is a tranquil spot situated on the way to Top Station. One of the well-known attractions to see when visiting Kundala Lake is the artificial Kundala dam. Also known as Sethuparvathipuram dam, it is said to be Asia’s first ever arch dam.

The lake is also a popular spot for boat rides such as the traditional Kashmiri Shikara boat. Other types of boating like row boating, paddle boating or speed boating are also available for hire. With the sun reflecting on the clear water and making it gleam in every direction possible, Kundala Lake is indeed a must visit sight for nature lovers. 

This area is also a significant place to see cherry blossoms. Blooming only twice a year, the cherry gardens surrounding Kundala Lake turn the entire lake into a more magical location. Being a paradise full of beautiful flowers, Kundala Lake is also home to the famous Neelakurinji flowers that bloom once every twelve years. The next sighting of the Neelakurinji flowers is supposed to be in 2030!

CG’s tip: Kundala Lake looks even more mesmerising under the first rays of sun. Make sure to arrive here early in the morning to see it in all its glory.

Distance: 20 km from Munnar Route: Munnar to Top Station / Mattupetti Direction route Opening hours: 09:00 am – 05:00 pm (Boating closes at 04:30 pm)

Top Station

Top Station is the last stop on the Mattupetti direction route. If you are looking to enjoy panoramic views of the Western Ghats and the Theni district valley, then driving to the Top Station should definitely be on your Munnar list. It might not technically be a ‘top station’ anymore due to the destruction of the railway tracks there, but it is certainly still the ‘top’ of Munnar. On a clear day, you can even see Tamil Nadu from there!

Like most touristic sights in the Kanan Devan hills, Top Station is also best enjoyed early in the morning. Because it is located 1880 metres above sea level, it can get surrounded by clouds more easily. Once the clouds come in, it becomes harder to see the incomparable views that the location is famous for. Top Station is also popular to spot the rare Neelakurinji flowers. There are a few tea farms nearby too. If you like chai, then you can even grab a cuppa and some snacks at the Top Station and enjoy the misty view in front.

However, do keep in mind that it can get really crowded there. When I visited around sunset time in February 2020,  tourists in Munnar were very limited due to the coronavirus. I was told by my auto-rickshaw driver that sometimes it can even take an entire day to get there and back due to the traffic in peak season.

Spice Gardens

There are many spice gardens in and around Munnar. Although a tad touristy, doing a tour of spice plantations is interesting if you want to see how the indigenous spices (like turmeric, ashwangandha , pepper, etc.) of the region grow. Typically, you will start by buying your tickets from the counter and have a guide take you around. You can try the species you like, learn about them, take some photographs and then exit through the gift shop.

The one that I visited was part of the auto-rickshaw tour in Cochin direction. It is called Spice County and the tickets cost INR 100 per person. We were taken to the starting point of the plantation in a rather adventurous jeep drive. Our tour lady was nice and wasn’t giving any unnecessary information to try to sell the products from the gift shop. However, others could insist on purchasing something.

The Cinnamon Gardens Spice Plantation is another popular one to visit in Munnar.

Distance: 6 km from Munnar Route: Munnar to Cochin direction Opening hours: 08:00 am to 06:00 pm

Tea Plantations and Museum

You cannot go to Munnar and not visit a tea plantation or factory! With more than 1500 acres of land covered with tea, it is truthfully present in every corner there. You can drive past them and stop on the highway to take photos from the various viewpoints that you will come across. Or, go on a tour, learn how it is cultivated, engage in tea tasting and bring some back home.

But if you are looking to get those Instagram perfect pictures of yourself strolling around in tea fields, then know that most aren’t open to the public. The Tata Group actually owns the majority of them, so you will need a special permit to enter as they are usually surrounded by pointed wires. Nonetheless, there are hiking and jeep tours in Munnar that go through the tea fields, so you can do one at sunrise and get some beautiful photos.

Some plantations like Chinnakanal Tea Fields, Kolukkumalai Tea Estate and Lockhart Tea Estate also allow visitors to explore the tea fields with a purchase of a ticket. The Kolukkumalai Tea Estate is the highest organic tea factory in the world. A jeep tour of it was recommended to me by many locals and tourists. This walking tour takes you amidst tea plantations and involves tea leaf picking and tea tasting as well!

CG’s tip: I was only in Munnar for a short while so I didn’t get the chance to do a tour. But, the auto-rickshaw driver we went with knew some tea plantations that were open to enter (I double-checked with the staff there too) and on the way. If you can, I would recommend doing a tour though as I do feel that I missed out on it.

Pothamedu Viewpoint

Nestled amidst tea and coffee plantations, the Pothamedu Viewpoint offers panoramas of the nearby valley, is a good place for photographs, and is said to be beautiful at sunset time. 

We visited around noon on Day 2 and I personally felt that it wasn’t worth going out of our way to reach there. It might have been because I went to more scenic places the day before or the weather condition, but it didn’t wow me like the other places did.

Having said that, I did enjoy walking around the Pothamedu viewpoint and found a tea plantation that was open to visit. The area is also known to be a good hiking and trekking spot. But if you are visiting with young kids, then be careful as the drop on the other side is really high and there is barely any safety.

Eravikulam National Park

The Eravikulam National Park is one of the many wildlife parks near Munnar. Home to the endangered Nilgiri Tahr mountain ungulates, the highest peak of Anamudi, and the famous Neelakurinji flowers; it is a much-loved tourist destination in Kerala. 

Unlike other national parks around the world, the Eravikulam National Park actually gives visitors the rare freedom to walk around instead of doing a traditional (jeep) safari. There is a designated area where you can stay as long as you wish to and try to spot a Nilgiri Tahr. If interested, you can also book a private hiking tour with the park in advance and go on a 2-3 hour guided expedition. The Eravikulam National Park requires everyone to buy a permit to enter.

In their attempt to do right by the Nilgiri Tahrs, the Kerala government ensures that they remain undisturbed during the calving season. So keep in mind that each year the park remains closed sometime from January for three months straight. Since I visited Munnar in February last year, I could not go to Eravikulam National Park because of this reason.

CG’s tip: The park might be closed during monsoon too, so if you are heading to Munnar to view it, then don’t forget to check in advance.

Lakkam Waterfalls

Lakkam Waterfalls is a beautiful stream close to the Eravikulam National Park. It is one of the most serene places to see in Munnar and is also known as Lakkom waterfalls. You can visit here to simply admire the waterfalls amidst rich flora or go swimming in the crystal-clear plunge pool that forms at the bottom of the lake. The water is usually icy cold, which can be both a blessing or suffering depending on the season you are visiting in.

Lakkam Waterfalls is also known as a great trekking spot in the area, so you can also book a tour for the same if you like. Just remember to not hike there during the monsoon season as the rocks can be slippery. The waterfall is also surrounded by beautiful Vaga trees that make the area even more appealing.

Distance : 25 km from Munnar Route: Munnar to Marayoor / Coimbatore direction  Opening hours: 08:00 am to 05:00 pm

Some other noteworthy waterfalls to visit in Munnar are Attukal (aka Attukad) waterfalls, Cheeyapara Waterfalls, Chinnakanal Waterfalls and Kuthumkal Waterfalls. But since cascades are in abundance there, you will probably come across many more during your time in Munnar.

Where to eat in Munnar?

South Indian food is one of my all-time favourites so I was really excited to eat my weight in the local delicacies of Munnar. Here are some places that I would recommend for good vegetarian food in Munnar:

Saravana Bhavan: Saravana Bhavan is a well-known, vegetarian South Indian chain around the world. You can expect to find good quality and hygienic local specialities like dosas, idlis , appams, thalis and more here. It is situated in Munnar market and is easy on the pocket too. I had a Rava Masala Dosa along with some idlis and found everything really tasty. I also loved that the food was served on an authentic banana leaf. Unfortunately, we only went here on our last night; otherwise we could have gone back for seconds!

Tea Tales Café: Tea Tales Café is a newly opened eatery by an adventure company in Munnar. It is situated on a higher floor on a busy street in Munnar Town, making it less noisy if you sit inside (outdoor seating is available too). If you need a break from the local food, you can find good vegetarian and vegan options like sandwiches, pastas, smoothies, etc. there. They also have a huge spread of coffees and local teas.

Hotel Gurubhavan: Hotel Gurubhavan was located a mere 5-minute walk from our hotel, so we decided to visit it for dinner one night. We arrived earlier than the standard Indian dinner time, but the place was packed with local tourists within minutes. The price was very reasonable and the food was decent too (we ordered a dosa and some Indian curry with naan). However, they did make another family sit on our table and have us share it with them without even asking which was a little weird.

County Cuisine: Tea County is a hotel operated by the Kerala Government and its multi-cuisine restaurant on site is called County Cuisine. I personally didn’t get to visit it, but from the recommendations I got and the reviews online, it looks like a nice place to get some Indian and Asian food. The restaurant is vegetarian friendly and offers some nice views.

Rochas Restaurant: Rochas restaurant was another eatery in Munnar that was near our hotel. We had jeera aloo and paneer butter masala with some garlic naans and everything was nice. I personally wanted to eat idlis , but for some reason a lot of the South Indian food was available only for breakfast. Not something that I was expecting in Kerala, but it was a touristy place so maybe that’s why.

Other than this, we just had our meals in decent looking places close to where we were. Since Munnar is a hill station, you might not find a huge number of modern restaurants around. Our hotel didn’t have a restaurant on site, but if yours does, then you can always eat there.

What to buy in Munnar?

Munnar is known for many things so if you like souvenir shopping or bringing a loved one a little something, then don’t forget to check out the local markets in the town. Since Munnar is also referred to as the tea capital of Kerala, some tea is always nice to remember it by. I also brought some coffee home for my family and they seemed to really enjoy it.

There are also many shops in Munnar town selling homemade chocolates. You can get flavours like fruit and nuts, chilli chocolates, white/dark, etc. The spice plantation I visited also had a chocolate shop near it, so it might be better to buy from them directly instead of a convenience store in the town.

Last but not the least, since Kerala is known for its Ayurveda practices, you can also buy essential oils, handmade soaps, incense sticks and other natural care products.

What to pack for Munnar?

•  It is really common for showers to appear from nowhere due to the high altitude of Munnar, so make sure to bring an umbrella or waterproof clothing.
• If you plan to take an auto-rickshaw tour, then it might be better to pack something to cover your face or eyes. There is a lot of dust when it’s windy, so we were thankful to have face masks and some eye gear .
•  A jacket ! Even if you are coming in the summer, places like Munnar do get cold at night, so it is useful to have a light layer in case you need it.

• Getting some light cotton clothes is also a good idea. The temperatures seem to fluctuate a lot so it can get really hot and humid during the day. I was there in February and was only comfortable in sleeveless maxi dresses or t-shirts during the day.
• Mosquitos are quite common in Munnar, especially near water bodies. Make sure to take some mosquito repellent with you.
• And of course, a camera! There are going to be countless photo opportunities for you in Munnar, so don’t forget to pack it. This is the one that I’m currently using.
• Munnar and especially Eravikulam National Park is great for wildlife photographers. So, if you have one, then bringing a zoom lens is also recommended.

Some things to know before visiting Munnar

• Even though there are ATMs in and around Munnar, I would recommend to always have some cash on you. The network in Munnar isn’t all that reliable and the auto-rickshaw and roadside vendors only take cash.
• If you are arriving into Munnar on the same day as taking a tour then I would recommend leaving the Top Station one for your second day instead. Since we could only start ours around mid-day, I felt a little rushed towards the end as it started getting dark before we could cover some spots.
• Even though there are a lot of hiking and trekking spots in Munnar, most are only accessible with a guide. If you rather go independently, then research in advance to double check if you are even allowed to access your preferred location.
• If you want to trek to the Anamudi Peak inside the Eravikulam National Park then you can get permission from the Forest and Wildlife authorities at Eravikulam.
• Last but not the least, please do not support elephant villages and other places that use animals as an attraction. Munnar is a place where you can watch them in their natural habitat drinking water by the lake, so there really is no good reason to contribute to animal cruelty.

Final Thoughts

Munnar is a truly incredible destination and it boosts so many interesting lakes, waterfalls, national parks and tea estates that you will never experience a dearth of options when visiting there. It may look like a small town at first, but the surrounding areas are so vast that there will always be new places to stumble upon. Aptly known as ‘Kashmir of the South’, Munnar truly is one of the best places I have visited in India so far!

It is a little over 3 hours drive through scenic hills of Kerala, covered in lush green terrace fields of coffee, with black thundering clouds hanging over the top of the hills. There are several waterfalls that you get to see, some from far, some from more nearby, on the way. Eventually we stopped near a gushing waterfall and clicked some snaps. Kerala, it seems, is abundant in massive waterfalls.This waterfall is one of those, where the water is crystal clear and super white. Owing to the fact that we visited just after the monsoons the waterfall looked at its charming best. There is a provision to go all the way to the foot of the waterfall to experience it literally – if you understand what I mean.

Covered by bushy trees, this waterfall is a treat to watch,hence it's advisable to see this place on your way to Munnar. 

There are no roadways that will take you near the waterfalls. So you will have to watch it from the window of your car. If you see this location on your way to Munnar, you don’t need to come back again to this place, and this will save some of your time.

Cheeyappara waterfalls

Adjacent to Valara waterfalls is the Cheeyappara waterfalls, another breathtaking location worth a visit. It is advisable to go to Cheeyappara waterfalls after visiting Valara during your Munnar 2 day trip plan , as they are close to each other. There is a point where the Cheeyappara waterfalls meet the Valara waterfalls and this meeting point is also a scenic beauty to watch.

The tourists mainly come here to see the lake and dam. Say, for example, you have started your journey on Saturday early in the morning, around 6 AM, via a self-drive car. Then you will have to take your breakfast in Kothamangalam. Say,;you watch both the waterfalls and reach Munnar by 10:30 AM. If you have booked your stay here, you can keep your luggage in the hotel room, freshen up and take a short nap of 1 hour. After that head for  Mattupetty dam.

The Mattupetty lake is around 13 kilometers away from Munnar. So either you can pack your lunch and take it with you, or you can reach this place and before you look around you can bring your lunch here. The place is open from 2 pm  to noon. You can opt for boat rides here after 2 pm or visit the rose garden. This rose garden of Mattupetty is very popular, due to the variety of roses available here. This lake will remain open until 3:30 pm.

 This is at a distance of 25 minutes from Mattupetty and is famous for its hydroelectric project, as it was the first site of Kerala to start this project. If you have already visited the dam, you must come and see the site where the hydroelectric power is generated. By the time you finish exploring the dam, the afternoon will be set, exhausting you. So, visit one more location and head back to your hotel.

  Devikulam in Munnar is around 1-hour drive from  Pallivasal. This place has a high mythological value. It is believed that Sita, wife of Lord Rama, bathed in the spring water in this place. It is due to this reason, a lot of people come to visit this place. The natural beauty of this place will mesmerize you and you will see a wide range of tea plantations here.

By the time you reach here, it might be around 5 pm. So you can spend about 1 hour looking around. After that, you must head back to your hotel in Munnar, which should be approximatey 6-7 kilometers from here. Although there are a few hotels in this place, booking a hotel within Munnar is advisable. Otherwise, it will be very difficult for you to visit other locations the next day.

  Anamudi peak

 The next morning, you start very early to reach the  Anamudi peak in Munnar about half an hour from Munnar.  Besides the natural scenic beauty, there is one special thing about this mountain range(the highest peak in the Western Ghats). The peak of this mountain looks like the head of an elephant , hence the name.  After spending around 40-45 minutes here, you can head to another beautiful location,  Echo point.

Surrounded by  green and bushy trees, this area has a lot of mountains. These mountains surround this point in such a way that any loud noise made here keeps echoing, hence the name. The  Echo point in Munnar has different entry fees  for adults and children. 

Once you are done with Echo Point, you can choose any nearby restaurant to have a meal. You will also find several places where you can shop and hotels wherein you can check in and rest for a few hours to rest and freshen up.

Angamaly Railway Station located in Kaladi is the nearest train station to Munnar located 108 km (3 hours) away followed by the Aluva Railway Station located 109 km (3 hours) away from Munnar.

Traveling from Kochi to Munnar by a KSRTC bus is considered to be the most cost-effective means of getting to and fro these two cities. KSRTC runs frequent bus service between these two and other cities in Kerala at reasonable rates. All you have to do is book your seat online or at the Ernakulam KSRTC Bus Stand itself before boarding your bus from here.

Is there a direct train from Kochi to Munnar?

No, there are no direct trains from Kochi to Munnar. The nearest railway station to Munnar is the Angamaly Railway Station located in Kaladi 108 km (3 hours) away, followed by the Aluva Railway Station located 109 km (3 hours) away from Munnar. Train travel is not a viable option to travel to Munnar from Kochi.

Is 2 days enough for Munnar?

Things to do in Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey and Kochi (Kerala)

Your time in Kerala is going to split between exploring the beautiful surrounding nature, complete with elephants, eating great food, perhaps a cooking class, and relaxing.

The following is an overview of various activities you could undertake and ways to get around Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey and Kochi. The list is not comprehensive and we highly recommend using a guide book and tips from your hotel/homestay in addition to this outline.

The highlight of Munnar is the gorgeous views of the surrounding valleys filled with trees and tea plantations. Munnar is more of a see and relax town, than having active things to do.

In terms of activities, you could still do a forest trek or ride/bath elephants. You would want to take advice of your homestay or hotel while planning these activities.

Getting around Munnar

You will need a vehicle to get around Munnar. Most of the points of interest are a generous distance apart and cannot easily be reached on foot. If we have rented a car for your entire time in Kerala, you can use this at no additional cost. Else your hotel/homestay can arrange for a car at approx INR 1,200-1,500 for a day. You could also get around Munnar by hiring a bike/scooter.

Things to do in Munnar

• You could spend time visiting the Eravikulam National Park in Munnar. The Nilgiri Thar (mountain goat) can be spotted fairly easily here. It is a pretty spot where you’d spend a little over an hour. The bird sightings are good but don’t expect to spot any spectacular wildlife such as tigers or leopards.
• Visit the scenic Mettuppey Dam and the Sandal Wood forests. There are also many waterfalls in and around Munnar such as Lakkam and Attukal waterfalls.
• You certainly want to visit a tea plantation and the Tata Tea Museum. Your hosts in Munnar, as predominantly you are in a homestay, are the best source of information for interesting activities to do.

Pretty in its own right and by the edge of the Periyar National Park, Thekkady in Kerala offers a lot more active things to do. For adventure enthusiasts the Periyar National Park provides a number of adventure activities like light treks, heavy forest treks or day rafting.

Getting around Thekkady

It is difficult to reach all the spots in Thekkady on foot. Again, if you have rented a car you can use that, else you should use a Tuk-Tuk – a much cheaper option than hiring a car for a day and can reach all spots. It will be roughly INR 400-700 for a day and can be arranged through your hotel.

Things to do in Thekkady

Here is a list of things to do with an overview compiled by the owners of Indhrivanam.

• One can ride and bathe elephants at Elephant Junction. Or you can take a spice plantation tour, which is pretty educational, and see the traditional dance and martial arts show.
• Over and above Thekkady too is a very relaxing place to take it slow and enjoy the views. One can particularly enjoy the traditional Indian dance and martial arts show at the cultural centre. Both last for about an hour – do not miss it!

The highlight experience of Alleppey in Kerala is its backwaters. Take an overnight houseboat or a day cruise or for a few hours riding along the backwaters and viewing normal day life along the banks.

Getting around Alleppey

Take an autorickshaw or a bus from the town centre to where you would like to go. The journey from Alleppey railway station to downtown is only 10-15 minutes and will cost about INR 50-60. Buses also run and are a cheap mode of travel, but Alleppey is quite small and going around on foot is far more enjoyable. Or you could consider hiring a bike/scooter from a reliable source.

Things to do in Alleppey

• Accommodation options are spread along the backwaters in Alleppey. It does not offer any principle attractions, apart from the backwaters itself. You would have to speak to your hotel/homestay for additional activities.
• Virtually all of them can arrange for a backwaters cruise if you are not spending a night on a houseboat. They can also arrange for cycles to roam around the countryside or guided farm walks to explore the fields.
• Alleppey is also extremely close to the coast so ask your host to direct you towards the beach if you wish to spend time there.

Kochi in Kerala is a quaint town, oozing with old world charm by the sea. The experience is just exploring the place on foot.

Getting Around Kochi

Kochi is just off the mainland and ferries are the fastest mode of transport. They run from Ernakalum and will take you to the main ferry port in Kochi. There are also tuk-tuks that will take you from Ernakalum station to catch the ferry.

Things to do in Kochi

• There is an array of sightseeing in Kochi. You can visit the Synagogues, see the Chinese fishing nets and buy dinner at the fish markets. Stop by one of the lovely cafes and enjoy South Indian cuisine, or ask your hosts to direct you to find a cooking class.
• Explore the old Portuguese and Dutch colonial buildings and churches such as St Francis Church, David Hall and Mattancherry Palace.
• Kochi also has a cultural centre where you can catch the traditional Indian dance you should not miss!

At a distance of 10 km from Ernakulam Junction (South) Railway Station, Cochin Jewish Synagogue is a religious place located at Jew Town in the Mattancherry area of Kochi city. It is the oldest synagogue in the Commonwealth of Nations, and among the must-visit places during your Kochi tour . Also known as Paradesi Synagogue, & Mattancherry Synagogue, the Cochin Jewish Synagogue was constructed in 1568 by Samuel Castiel, David Belila, and Joseph Levi for the Malabari Jewish community who mainly migrated from the Middle East and Europe. In 1662, it was destroyed by the Portuguese and then reconstructed, two years later, by the Dutch. The synagogue is located in the quarter of Old Cochin known as Jew Town and is the only one of the seven synagogues of the Cochin Jewish community still in use. The complex has four buildings. It was built adjacent to the Mattancherry Palace temple on the land given to the Malabari Yehuden or 'Yehuden .....

2 Dutch Palace

At a distance of 10 km from Ernakulam Junction (South) Railway Station, Dutch Palace, also known as Mattancherry Palace is a Portuguese palace located in Mattancherry locality of Kochi. Situated near Jewish Synagogue, it is one of the famous heritage sites in Kerala , and among the must-include places in Kochi holiday packages .   The Mattancherry Palace was built around 1545 CE by the Portuguese and gifted to the King of Cochin Veera Kerala Varma in the year 1555 CE. The Portuguese influence was further supplanted by the Dutch, who took over Mattancherry in 1663. The Dutch then carried out some extensions and renovations in 1663, and since then the palace was popularly known as the Dutch Palace. 3 Indo Portuguese Museum

At a distance of 12 km from Ernakulam Junction (South) Railway Station, The Indo-Portuguese Museum situated in Fort Kochi is an important center to understand the Indo-Portuguese Christian Art heritage. The museum was established by Dr. Joseph Kureethra, Bishop of Kochi. It is divided into five main sections according to the nature of items displayed in each section, Altar, Treasure, Procession, Civil Life and Cathedral. The museum currently houses a piece of the altar made in teak wood from the Church of Our Lady of Hope, Vypeen, a chasuble from Bishop's House, Fort Kochi, Processional cross, which is a combination of silver and wood from Santa Cruz Cathedral, Fort Kochi, Indo-Portuguese Monstrance from The Church of Our Lady of Hope, Vypeen. Among the displayed items, the Coat of Arms of the Franciscans needs special mention. Timings: 10 AM to 5 PM. Closed on Mondays and Public Holidays.

4 Santa Cruz Basilica

At a distance of 13 km from Ernakulam Junction (South) Railway Station, the Santa Cruz Basilica is situated in Fort Kochi. This church was built by the Portuguese and elevated to a Cathedral by Pope Paul 1V in 1558. Later the British demolished the structure and Bishop Dom Gomez Vereira commissioned a new building in 1887. Consecrated in 1905, Santa Cruz was proclaimed a Basilica by the Pope John Paul II in 1984. It is one of the 8 basilicas in India and one of the oldest churches in India. The Church has two lofty spires and a remarkably bright, white-washed exterior and a pastel-colored interior. The interiors of the church are mostly Gothic. The columns decorated with frescoes and murals, the seven large canvas paintings on the passion and death on the Cross, especially the painting of the Last Supper, modeled on the famous painting of Leonardo da Vinci and the beautiful stained glass windows add to the artistic grandeur of the place.

5 Chinese Fishing Nets

At a distance of 13 km from Ernakulam Junction, Chinese Fishing Nets are a type of fishing nets that dotted the harbor's mouth at Fort Kochi. These are among the most popular Kochi tourist attractions . Locally known as Cheenavala, these nets were introduced in Fort Kochi by the Chinese explorer, Zheng He between 1350 and 1450 AD. The Chinese Fishing Nets are fixed land installations, used for fishing in a unique method. These nets are fixed on bamboo and teak poles holding them horizontally by huge mechanisms to pull them down into the sea. These nets are weighed by large stones tied to ropes. The entire structure of the Chinese fishing nets is 10 meters in height, spreads 20 meters over the water body, and is operated by a team of six fishermen. 6 Fort Kochi Beach

At a distance of 10 km from Ernakulam Junction (South) Railway Station, Fort Kochi Beach, or Kochi Beach is a pristine beach located on the coast of the Arabian Sea in Kerala. Also called as Mahatma Gandhi Beach, it is one of the finest beaches in Kerala , and among the prime places to visit as part of Kochi holiday packages . Often known as the 'Queen of the Arabian Sea', Fort Kochi Beach is a serene beach that offers a scenic view and natural beauty to its visitors. With its pristine water and tranquil ambiance, it is extremely admired by tourists and local people as well. At a distance of 39 Kms from Munnar, the magnificent Valara Waterfalls is located between Adimali and Neriamangalam on Munnar to Kochi highway (NH49), near Cheeyappara Waterfalls. Valara features a chain of waterfalls falling from a height of about 1000 feet and provide a magnificent view. These waterfalls are surrounded by lush, dense forests that are home to a variety of animals and birds. It is one of the top waterfalls near Munnar. Though the falls are visible from highway, it demands good amount of trekking to reach the bottom of the falls. The surrounding places of the Valara Falls are good for trekking. The falls offer spectacular views in monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. This place is connected by buses running between Munnar and Kochi.

2 Tea Museum

At a distance of 3.5 km from Munnar Bus Station, Tea Museum is a wonderful place to visit in Munnar town. The museum is owned by Kannan Devan Hills Plantations Limited owned by Tata Group. Visit to Tea Museum is one of the top things to do in Munnar. The museum exhibits different equipment used in tea manufacturing from early 20th century to late 20th century. Some of the items exhibited in the museum include the tea leave cutting machines, power making equipment, etc. The process of tea manufacturing is also explained in the museum. The museum is situated in a scenic location on Pooyankuty Road on the outskirts of Munnar town. Timings: 10 AM to 4 PM. Monday Holiday. 3 Rose Garden

At a distance of 4 km from Munnar Bus Stand and 2.5 km from Top Station, Rose Garden is a well maintained flower garden situated on Munnar - Top Station Highway in Munnar, Kerala. It is one of the top places to visit in Munnar. Munnar Rose Garden is a beautiful garden with hundreds of rare varieties of flowers and herbal plants. With large tea plantations in the background, this place can be visited during a trip to Munnar. The garden is operated by Kerala Forest Development Centre (KFDC), a Govt. of Kerala undertaking. Spread across a few acres of land, this place has an amenity center for tourists and a sales outlet, in addition to hundreds of rare varieties of flowers, cactus, shrubs, creepers and herbal plants. At a distance of 16 km from Munnar, Eravikulam National Park is a protected wildlife reserve located in Munnar. At a distance of 4 km from Munnar Bus Station, Photo Point is a beautiful spot on Mattupetty road lined up with tea gardens on both sides. As the name suggests, this place is a famous photography point in Munnar due to its breathtaking background of mountains surrounded by lush green tea gardens. Photo Point is one of the best tourist places to visit in Munnar . The tea gardens are owned by Kannan Devan Hills Plantations Limited owned by Tata Group and it is a private property. Visitors can take photographs at the entrance of garden without disturbing the plantations. At a distance of 15 kms from Munnar, Echo Point is a beautiful place situated on the way to Top Station between Mattupetty Dam and Kundala Lake. At a distance of 32 Kms from Munnar, Top Station is a breathtakingly beautiful place on Kerala - Tamilnadu boarder. From here, one can get 360 degrees view of the Western Ghats. This is one of the best Munnar tourist places and among the prime place to visit on a Munnar tour . At an altitude of 2200 meters, this place is also known for the Neelakurunji Plant, which flowers only once every 12 years (next flowering year is 2018). The view point is at a distance of 2 kms from the road point and has to be trekked down. The trek path is very steep with deep valleys one side. Travel from munnar to thekkady, 1 periyar boat cruise.

Boat Cruise is the best mode in Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary to watch the wildlife from a close distance. Boating in Periyar Lake is arranged by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) and is one of the most popular things to do in Thekkady . The lake was formed by Mullaperiyar Dam constructed in 1895. The land surrounding the lake is commonly frequented by wildlife. Elephants are the most common wildlife you can see on the shores of the reservoir while boating in the lake as part of Thekkady holiday packages . Apart from Elephants, the sight of Wild Boar and Sambar Deer is also possible. The upper deck in the boat is best for wildlife viewing. It offers a rare opportunity to experience the safari on an Elephant through a Spice Plantation where the gentle breeze refresh ones, with the spice scented air. Elephant Junction is a place where one can actually interact with the elephants getting indulged into activities such as bathing elephant, elephant ride and enjoying getting around with playful elephants. Elephant safaris are equipped with a howdah on the back of the elephant on which two tourists sit, with an umbrella over the riders head. At a distance of 35 Kms from Kanyakumari, 53 Kms from Trivandrum & 700 Kms from Chennai (situated on Trivandrum - Kanyakumari road), Padmanabhapuram is an ancient historical town surrounded by a fort with an area of 187 acres. The ancient capital of Travancore might be constructed before AD 1601. The palace with an area of seven acres, is situated in the very centre on the Padmanabhapuram Fort, amidst hills, dales and rivers. The fort which was built with mud originally was dismantled and reconstructed with granite by Maharaja Marthanda Varma. 4 Thiruvalluvar Statue

At a distance of 1.5 kms from Kanyakumari Bus Station & 1.5 km from Kanyakumari Railway Station (situated on Vivekananda Rock), Thiruvalluvar Statue is dedicated to the greatest Tamil poet, philosopher and saint - Thiruvalluvar. The pedestal of the statue is of 38 feet height and the statue over it is 95 feet tall with a grand total of 133 feet for the entire sculpture. The 3 tier pedestal known as Atharapeedam is surrounded by an artistic Mandapa with 38 feet height. To help the tourists to worship the holy feet of Thiruvalluvar 140 steps are constructed inside the Mandapa. The view from this point is quite breathtaking! At a distance of 1 km from Kanyakumari Bus Station & 1 km from Kanyakumari Railway Station (situated at the entrance of Beach Road), The Gandhi Memorial completed in 1956 is built in the memory of the Father of the Nation. An urn of Mahatma Gandhi was kept here for public to pay homage before immersion. Mahatma Gandhi visited Kanyakumari twice in 1925 and 1937. In 1948 his ashes were immersed in the sea waters in Kanyakumari. In commemoration of this event a beautiful monument has been constructed here. It's central shape is 79 feet high representing the age of the Mahatma at that time. The sun at Mid day on 2nd October would fall on the peedam through a hole in the roof. enroute to munnar you can visit vallara & cheeyapara falls,karadipara view points,plantations etc

there is elephant ride option at enroute at kodanad.its not great and shall be avoided.you may do either in munnar or thekkady

Munnar via Athirapilly is a longer route. As suggested by Arun-Tina, you can see vallara & cheeyapara falls on Kochi-Munnar route.

Nothing special in vallara and cheeyappara it is the normal falls in cochin -munnar road...nearby munnar one viewpoint is pothanmedu viewpoint....view of sunset is very nice from there
