The Asian Tour’s International Series will return to England for its fifth event of 2023 at Newcastle's Close House .
In 2022, another course in the area, Slaley Hall, hosted an International Series tournament – the first time an Asian Tour event had taken place in the country. This year, the venue for the 2017 and 2020 British Masters gets the nod for the tournament, which will take place between 17 and 20 August.
As well as the venue’s recent history of hosting the high-profile DP World Tour event, it also has a strong association with LIV Golf player Lee Westwood , who opened its Colt Course in 2011 and helped improve the features of its two courses by adding new tees and bunkers. It is at the Colt Course where the tournament will take place, and Close House Managing Director, Jonathan Lupton was delighted with the news.
He said: “Welcoming The International Series back to Northumberland for a second consecutive year is an exciting development. Having had the pleasure to visit the International Series Oman in February, it was fantastic to see the growth of the Series over the last year and we’re looking forward to working closely with the Asian Tour to create a memorable event in England.”
Close House owner Sir Graham Wylie was equally enthusiastic about the announcement. He said: “I am sure that the players will relish the challenge of the Lee Westwood Colt Course along with enjoying a very warm welcome from the members and guests. The people of the North-East are extremely passionate about sport and to host another world-class event in the region is a huge honour.”
Meanwhile, Commissioner and CEO of the Asian Tour Cho Minn Thant cited the success of last year’s tournament in the area and ties with Westwood as reasons why it is the ideal venue. He said: “The Asian Tour is excited to be returning to Newcastle for the International Series England. We enjoyed a very successful event there last June, which marked the Tour’s first trip to the United Kingdom.
"To be able to stage the tournament this year at Close House, a fantastic venue that has such strong ties with Lee Westwood – a nine-time winner on the Asian Tour – adds an exciting new dimension to the tournament and provides another great opportunity for our membership.”

The International Series was launched last year following a $300m investment from LIV Golf over ten years. Aside from the $2m purse for the tournament, many in the field will have an added incentive to perform well as the International Series Order or Merit winner will earn a place with the lucrative LIV Golf League next year. Former LIV Golf player Andy Ogletree, who won the International Series Qatar last month , is the current Order of Merit leader.

Six big Masters talking points – part one: The Irish
Is this to be Tiger’s Augusta swan song?
Graeme McDowell is up to 16th on the Asian Tour’s International Series England leaderboard at Close House after a second-round 69 saw him move to -2 for the tournament and trail the leaders by four.
McDowell’s approach play was impressive as he hit 16 of 18 greens in round two, but six birdies were offset by four bogeys – including two three-putts – in a round that could’ve been much lower had he not required 32 putts in total.
Speaking after his first round, McDowell said he would love to see the Asian Tour visit Royal Portrush, believing that there is potential for the Asian tour to come to Ireland and praising the support the Asian tour is receiving from household names on the LIV tour.
“Asian Tour Portrush, yeah, obviously I’d love to go up there, obviously we’re kind of happy with the partnership that we have now with the Asian Tour and Cho [CEO of Asian Tour Cho Minn Thant] and his whole team”, McDowell said.
“I think they’re a great team and I think we’re proud as LIV players and top players and guys that are obviously big names coming over to support the Asian Tour and I think it’s great to see them benefitting from it and I think it’s just the beginning, where can this go? I think you can go to great places”.
McDowell said that it’s important that the Asian Tour follow other tours and make themselves a global tour.
“Asia has to take advantage of new markets, new opportunities and take their players around the world because speaking from my point of view, I think it made me a better player playing on the European Tour when I was young because I got exposure to all different types of cultures and golf courses and grasses and environments around the world,” he told the media.
“I think it’s great to see the Asian Tour travelling and coming to new destinations, so we say global destinations. I think it’s great for the game, it’s great for the business of the game and I think that’s like I say, every tour in the world’s doing it now so it’s definitely important to follow suit.”
McDowell trails 21-year-old Spaniard David Puig and 38-year-old American Jason Kokrak by four strokes going into moving day. Puig’s 66 was the second lowest of the day and came despite missing six of 18 greens with all five of his birdies coming on the front nine.
Kokrak, who’d opened with a 67, followed up with a two-under 69 to take 36-hole co-leader honours and they’re a stroke clear of the USA’s Andy Ogletree and Australian Jack Thompson, with the former taking low round of the day honours with a 65.
“I’m Hitting the ball pretty good, the putts that dropped at the beginning didn’t drop at the end but overall, pretty happy,” said Puig, who’s another that plays on the LIV Tour.
“It was tough. But at the end of the day it’s a pretty short course so I have a lot of wedges in. It was maybe an extra club off the tee on some of those holes, but at the end of the day, you’re hitting the same club into the green.
“It was obviously a little more windy than yesterday, but I don’t think it played that tough because the greens are still pretty receptive and with preferred lies. But it was a grind too, I mean you needed to hit good shots to have birdie opportunities, and I think I did.”
Kokrak didn’t feel he’d had his best in round two but is hoping that slight improvements will see him kick on over the closing two rounds.
“Yesterday with the way I got around, I hit it really nicely,” he said. “Didn’t have my best stuff today, didn’t hit it quite as good. Made a few putts to start the round to kind of keep it going, a couple five, eight footers here and there, but hopefully, you know, tidy a few things up and make a few putts over the weekend”, he said.
Lee Westwood shot a four-over-par 75 to finish just the right side of the cutline on three-over-par, alongside Ian Poulter’s son, Luke, who shot a 74 to make the cut as an amateur.
McDowell tees off at 11.40am tomorrow alongside Miguel Tabuena and Taichi Ko.

Close House to host Asian Tour event
Close House, which has also staged four editions of the British Masters from 2017-2020, has Lee Westwood as its tour ambassador. It has not yet been confirmed whether Westwood, who joined LIV Golf last year, will be playing in the International Series England.
The International Series was launched last year through an investment by LIV Golf that created a premier level of events to develop the next generation of stars and offer pathways to top competition in the LIV Golf League. The ground-breaking initiative sits within the Asian Tour schedule and saw seven International Series events staged last season across seven countries in three continents.
“The Asian Tour is excited to be returning to Newcastle for the International Series England. We enjoyed a very successful event there last June, which marked the Tour’s first trip to the UK,” said Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner & CEO of the Asian Tour. “To be able to stage the tournament this year at Close House, a fantastic venue that has such strong ties with Lee Westwood – a nine-time winner on the Asian Tour – adds an exciting new dimension to the tournament and provides another great opportunity for our membership.”
The next tournament on the International Series schedule takes place at Black Mountain Golf Club in Thailand from March 9-12.

Close House and passionate North-East welcomed return of International Series England
– Close House’s Colt Course chosen for fifth event on The International Series 2023 –
Close House, a premier golf destination in the North-East of England with a strong affiliation to one of the country’s greatest golfers Lee Westwood, will hosted The International Series England 2023 and ensured another world-class venue featured on The International Series schedule.
The US$2 million tournament was played from August 17-20 and represented the fifth stop on The International Series in 2023.
The International Series England made its debut last summer, in the same region, and was a landmark event for the International Series and Asian Tour as it marked the first time the Tour had staged an event in the United Kingdom.
Before the event, Close House Managing Director, Jonathan Lupton, said: “Welcoming The International Series back to Northumberland for a second consecutive year is an exciting development.
“Having had the pleasure to visit the International Series Oman in February, it was fantastic to see the growth of the Series over the last year and we’re looking forward to working closely with the Asian Tour to create a memorable event in England.”
The Scott Macpherson-designed Lee Westwood Colt Course was used for the tournament. The highly rated par-71 layout measures just under 7,000 yards, and incorporates historical features throughout, including ha-ha walls and ancient woodland. It is one of two courses at Close House, with the other being the Lee Westwood Filly course.
“I am sure that the players will relish the challenge of the Lee Westwood Colt Course along with enjoying a very warm welcome from the members and guests,” said Close House owner, Sir Graham Wylie prior to the event.
“The people of the North-East are extremely passionate about sport and to host another world class event in the region is a huge honour.”
The International Series was launched in 2022 through a historic investment by LIV Golf that created a premier level of events to develop the next generation of stars and offer unprecedented pathways to top competition in the LIV Golf League. The ground-breaking initiative sits with the Asian Tour schedule and saw seven International Series events staged in 2022 across seven countries in three continents.
During the build up to the event, Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner & CEO, Asian Tour stated that “The Asian Tour is excited to be returning to Newcastle for the International Series England. We enjoyed a very successful event there last June, which marked the Tour’s first trip to the United Kingdom,”
“To be able to stage the tournament this year at Close House, a fantastic venue that has such strong ties with Lee Westwood – a nine-time winner on the Asian Tour – adds an exciting new dimension to the tournament and provides another great opportunity for our membership.”
“We thank Close House for making this possible and look forward to another trip to the North of England, which, as we learned in 2022, is an incredible region for golf.”

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.
Duration: 2 hours
Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing
This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.
Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.
Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.
Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.
Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating
We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…
This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.
The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.
Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.
The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.
You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.
Physical Rating
Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…
These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.
These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.
These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.
These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.
Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.
Luxury Rating
Some trips are like a stroll on the beach, while others have you trekking alpine passes. Some of you thrive on camping out on the savannah, while others may prefer a hot shower and a comfortable bed in a lodge. Follow the grading systems below to find the right trip for you.
To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport. So whether you're travelling on a budget and want to save money by using public transport, or prefer upgraded accommodation and are happy to pay a little more, then we have a level for you.
