Military & Veterans Travel Guide – Ideas, Discounts & Resources [2023]

Travel Organizations for Military Service Members & Veterans

Travel deal websites for military service members & veterans, airline discounts & allowances for military service members and veterans, accessing airport lounges while flying as a military service member or veteran, military lodging, booking a rental car as a military service member or veteran, booking a cruise as a military service member or veteran, buying theme park tickets as a military service member or veteran, mobile apps for military service member or veteran discounts, final thoughts.

We may be compensated when you click on product links, such as credit cards, from one or more of our advertising partners. Terms apply to the offers below. See our Advertising Policy for more about our partners, how we make money, and our rating methodology. Opinions and recommendations are ours alone.

Many people view the military community almost as an extended family. If you’re part of that special club in any capacity, you’ll often feel the gratitude and appreciation being directed your way by everyday members of the public, as well as a host of business owners who can offer you more than just their thanks for serving your country.

Over 8 million consumers are part of that community when you count active duty, retired personnel, reservists, and military employees. Adding in the immediate families of past and present military personnel, you soon appreciate that this a big group of people who businesses would like to recognize and keep happy.

Many travel and leisure providers (and credit card issuers) offer discounts to service members and veterans as their own gesture of appreciation for the time these people have served. However, it can often be difficult to instantly locate military and veterans discounts on general travel websites or know where to get the best possible travel deal.

This guide aims to provide resources that military personnel and veterans can use to find travel discounts. There is a wide range of continuing and promotional discounts and incentives available, and these can often be found via resources like travel clubs, booking websites, attraction websites, and airline, hotel, and cruise websites.

Here is a comprehensive guide to getting recognition for your military service in the form of discounts, special offers, and incentives.

USAA thank you note

There are a number of organizations and programs that military service members and veterans can join to get special access to travel benefits and other advantages. These programs are often free for those who are eligible, and applications can be submitted online. Here are several organizations to choose from:

  • Armed Forces Vacation Club (AFVC) — The AFVC is a membership organization for active duty, guard, reserve, and retired military employees. It offers weeklong resort vacations at thousands of resorts in over 100 countries starting at very low prices, including last-minute vacation deals, “space available” deals, and short-stay deals. Members can also buy travel certificates to be redeemed at affiliated resorts. For travelers in need of inspiration, the AFVC features a Vacation Planning Resource Center full of vacation ideas and travel tips.
  • In Honor of our Troops Foundation (IHOOT)  — This organization originally started by offering veterans 1 free vacation per year. They have also added another program — the IHOOT Acquisition Program — that offers discounted accommodation rates to members all year round. You can apply for free vacations that are aimed at offering rest, recuperation, and healing to help military families reconnect with each other. There are 100 locations, including accommodations in places like Hawaii, California, and Mexico. Although the stay is free, airfare is not included. It is also suggested you apply at least 6 weeks before your intended vacation date.
  • The Military Wallet — Sign up for a free newsletter to stay up to date with some of the latest deals and incentives available to veterans and check out the Travel Discounts page to get information on tickets and other travel options at reduced costs.
  • Operation We Are Here   — This website has a variety of air travel assistance links for the military community.
  • SMART RVing — This site aims to source the most competitive RV rental and accommodation prices available for military veterans, and there are regular rallies throughout the country that you might want to attend.
  • United Services Automobile Association (USAA) Travel Deals  — USAA offers insurance, banking, investment, and retirement services to both active and former military service members and their families. In addition to the free financial resources that USAA members receive, veterans can also check out the special travel deals. On the organization’s  Travel Deals  page, visitors can explore  car rental services  as well as deals on flights, hotels, cruises, and travel insurance that can only be accessed by registering online as a member.
  • Vacation for Warriors — Specifically aimed at providing free vacations for soldiers who are injured during combat, Vacations for Warriors is a non-profit that was set up in 2014. These vacations are made possible with the help of commercial organizations like American Airlines, which donated 1 million AAdvantage miles, along with other transferable hotel points and timeshare options.

Hot Tip: Aside from travel bookings, some of these websites can even provide discounts on car buying, home repairs, loans, and more!

Booking Travel

Many travel discounts are available to military service members and veterans even if they do not belong to an organization. The following websites offer military travel deals online:

  • American Forces Travel — This Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) program is for active military, Guard or Reserve, U.S. Coast Guard, retired military, and all eligible MWR patrons. • CheapTickets — By visiting the CheapTickets military page, active-duty service members, those on reserve, National Guard members, and veterans can sign up to verify their military or veterans status to get discounts of up to 18% off.
  • Hotwire — Active, retired, and veterans of the U.S. military, and their spouses and minor children get $10 off Hot Rate hotel bookings

Visitors can find advice on military travel, getting military deals, and military lodging options. The website also gives travel advice and has a large section of travel discounts.
  • Military Fares  — Military Fares is a website that allows users to search a variety of airlines, hotels, and car rental for military rates. The platform is a Priceline Partner Network that provides an extensive offering of flights. Recent military deals that users have purchased are displayed so visitors can get an idea of what rates might be on offer when they’re searching.
  • Travelation — This search page dedicated to military travel deals makes it easy to book flights with military and veteran discounts. There is also a military promotional code for additional savings.
  • Veterans Advantage — Enroll with Veterans Advantage and get access to a number of travel discounts, special offers, and medical/insurance services that are included as part of the membership package. Qualification includes anyone who served in the military and immediate family members. There is an annual membership plan available for $4.99 per month, but if you take advantage of the various offers and discounts, the savings should be far greater than this fee. Plus, the $55,000 insurance coverage that comes as part of the deal is worth having.

Keep in mind that sometimes when you book through a site that offers discounts to military and veterans, you might not receive miles or points for your flight or stay or on-site benefits that may come with elite status.

Hot Tip: The TSA provides expedited security screening for all members of the U.S. Armed Forces and offers assistance with the screening process for veterans and wounded warriors. Check out our guide to TSA military benefits  for more details.

Military member uses cell phone

If you want to be able to search for travel deals using your phone, it makes sense to have some apps installed that can help when you don’t want to browse the internet.

Apps you may want to download include:

  • Ibotta ( iOS , Android )
  • Military Discounts Free ( Android )
  • Rakuten ( iOS , Android )
  • RetailMeNot ( iOS , Android )
  • ShopSavvy ( iOS ,  Android )

While some of these apps provide discounts to the general public, the savings may be more significant than using a military-specific program.

To those who serve or who have served, your time, talent, and dedication to protecting our nation hasn’t gone unnoticed. Many vendors, airlines, hotels, and cruises provide opportunities for you to save while you travel, or receive exclusive perks and services.

Booking through these programs can save a significant amount of money, and it’s always beneficial to search around to take advantage of the best deals.

American Forces Travel℠ is a new Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) program arising out of a joint service initiative combining the efforts of each of the five branches of service (Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard) and the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Military Community & Family Policy.

Because the Internet is now the most popular way to research and book travel, the branches of Service chose to evolve their travel offering. The Services have contracted with a world leader in travel, Priceline®, to deliver high value travel benefits to the U.S. military community. American Forces Travel℠ is transforming the way MWR provides online leisure services to our Service members and families, empowering them to revitalize, reconnect, be well, and most importantly, be mission-ready. In addition to dramatically enhancing quality of life for the military community, American Forces Travel℠ will inject critical revenue into MWR programs by providing commissions from every booking made.

Awarding the no-cost contract to Priceline® is a major milestone for the Services and a testament to their collaborative and transformative efforts. While there are many for-profit online leisure travel offerings marketing to the military today, American Forces Travel is the only official joint services MWR leisure travel website.

Flying Space-A to Sigonella, Italy: 10 Things You Need to Know

A port city with a mountain in the background

A military hop to Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella is the perfect start to an adventure on the island of Sicily! Starting with views of Mt. Etna, Europe’s most active volcano, as you land at the air terminal, Sicily is a feast for the eyes as well as the palate.

Sicily also offers many unique experiences, all within a relatively small area. Visit Mediterranean beaches and snow-capped mountains on the same day. Explore ruins from ancient civilizations. Sample local wines and olive oil. And of course, enjoy southern Italian cuisine, culture, and hospitality!

Start planning your trip now with these 10 things to know about flying to Sigonella Space-A!

If you are new to Space-A flying, read this Quickstart Guide to Space-A Flights first to get a basic understanding of how the process works.

1. Passengers arriving in Sigonella from outside of Europe are responsible for obtaining the required stamp in their passport.

Sigonella passenger terminal does not have a representative from Italian Customs & Immigration. Passengers flying from the U.S. or other locations outside of the Schengen Area* into Sigonella will not receive a Schengen entry stamp in their passport.

Following is the guidance from Sigonella passenger terminal for how to obtain the required passport stamp:

“When entering the European Union via NAS Sigonella, please note that all responsibility for border clearance falls solely on the passenger. NAS Sigonella is not an official entry point into Italy, and as such, does not offer border clearance services. Travelers must coordinate in advance with the Italian Police at Catania International Airport for border clearance (contact: +39-095-723-7988). Office hours for clearance are Monday to Friday, from 0800 to 1600. Required documentation includes: Military boarding pass confirming arrival in Sigonella, Italy A valid and up-to-date passport Ensure adherence to all relevant protocols and contact the appropriate authorities for any questions or assistance.”

*If you are not familiar with the Schengen Area, read this article from Department of State .

Please note that if you do not get your passport stamped at your first Schengen port of entry, you may have problems if you encounter local police or other authorities in the Schengen area during your visit or with immigration officials when you depart.

If you are stationed in Italy on orders or fly to Sigonella from another base in Europe and already have a Schengen entry stamp in your passport, you have no need for a stamp at Sigonella.

2. Sigonella is on a Patriot Express route.

The Patriot Express mission originates at NAS Norfolk and stops at NAVSTA Rota (usually for only a few hours) before continuing to Sigonella and then to Bahrain. You will not receive a Schengen entry stamp in your passport at NAVSTA Rota.

Please note that Space-A passengers who are not stationed in Europe and do not have a Spanish passport or residency card are not authorized to leave Rota Naval Base during the stopover. The reason for this restriction is explained in this article .

3. Most flights to Sigonella originate in Norfolk or other bases in Europe.

Besides the Patriot Express, Norfolk has other frequent missions to Sigonella. Most stop at NAVSTA Rota on the way.

Other frequent flights via Sigonella are from locations in Europe. Besides Rota, bases with regular missions to and from Sigonella include NSA Naples (Italy), Souda Bay (Greece), and Ramstein AB (Germany) .

Visit the Sigonella passenger terminal page on the Air Mobility Command website to see their current flight schedules.

4. The Sigonella passenger terminal is open 24 hours.

Although the terminal is always staffed, after-hours services are limited.

There is a small USO open on weekdays. The coffee shop next to the terminal also is open during the day, Monday through Friday.

5. NAS Sigonella has two bases: NAS 1 and NAS 2.

The bases are about 7 miles apart. They are connected by a shuttle, which makes multiple stops at each base and takes about 30 minutes to travel between NAS 1 and NAS 2. A shuttle schedule is available at the terminal.

The passenger terminal is located on NAS 2, which is the smaller of the two bases. Other facilities on NAS 2 include a Navy Gateway Inn & Suites (NGIS), a fitness center, a NEX Mini Mart, and a few fast-food eateries.

NAS 1 is the main base, which has all of the usual facilities, another NGIS, and a Navy Lodge.

6. NAS Sigonella has three lodging facilities.

NAS 1 and NAS 2 both have a Navy Gateway Inn & Suites (NGIS). When you make a reservation, remember to confirm which base your room is on.

The NGIS at NAS 2 is a 10 – 15 minute walk from the passenger terminal. The location on NAS 1 is right near the front gate.

NAS 1 also has a Navy Lodge only a 5-minute walk from the gate.

Contact the facilities directly for current rates and availability.

Get the full scoop on using Space-A flights and lodging with our free 45-page Guide to Military Space-A Travel.

7. The nearest off-base lodging is mostly on local farms or in the city of Catania.

The closest civilian hotel is Hotel Sigonella Inn , across from NAS 1. The area is rural, and besides the base, the only services within walking distance of the hotel are a couple pubs/restaurants.

Other lodging in the immediate area consists mostly of “agriturismos,” which are farms or wineries that also host guests.

Agriturismo Oasi di Francesca is located between NAS 1 and NAS 2 and comes highly-recommended by fellow Space-A travelers. View pictures and check rates here .

The city of Catania is about 13 miles from NAS 2 (see transportation options below). In Catania, you can find a wide range of lodging options, including hotels, B&Bs, and apartments.

If you rent a car, we don’t recommend staying in the city center. If you do, make sure the hotel has secure parking, as theft of auto parts is common.

8. Retirees can use most base facilities at Sigonella

Retirees can shop at the commissary/NEX, rent cars, and use MWR facilities, including the fitness center and Community Recreation trips (we did a fun ATV tour of Mt. Etna).

Retirees cannot eat in the Galley (dining facility) or purchase fuel at the gas station.

9. The closest civilian airport to Sigonella is Catania International Airport.

Catania (code CTA) is about 12 miles northeast of NAS 2. It has direct flights to destinations throughout Italy and to other countries in Europe, plus Casablanca and Dubai.

Several low-cost airlines, including Ryanair, service Catania airport.

10. You have many options for ground transportation after landing at Sigonella.

Car Rental There is a Europcar rental car facility next to the terminal. They have a key drop box if you need to return your vehicle outside of business hours. Note that they are closed on Saturday afternoons and all day Sunday.

You can likely find a much cheaper rate by renting from a location outside the base or at Catania airport. We used DoYouItaly to rent a car at the airport and paid about $40 total for a 3-day rental, including tax and insurance.

Keep in mind that driving in Sicily is not for the faint of heart (or slow of reflex). If you do not want to rent a car, you have other good options.

Train/Bus You can catch a local bus right outside the NAS 2 gate. The ride to Catania airport takes about 20 minutes. The bus station in downtown Catania (a 5-minute walk from Catania Centrale train station) is about 10 minutes farther.

Train travel in Italy is efficient and inexpensive. You can even take a train from Catania to mainland Italy!

Use Google Maps or Rome2Rio to find the best combination of public transport options for wherever you want to go.

Taxi Few taxis have base access, but the passenger terminal is across the street from the NAS 2 gate, so you will not have far to walk to meet your taxi.

Ready to go to Sigonella?

Start planning your visit to the incredible island of Sicily! Make sure you have everything you need to fly Space-A , including the required documentation and the recommended gear/clothing. Then, start tracking military flight schedules and get ready to hop to Sigonella!
