West Texas is a unique part of the Lone Star Start with a lot to offer . Bordering Mexico on the other side of the Rio Grande, desert landscapes, ghost towns, inspiring artwork, and relics of the Old West can all be found in this enchanting region. Travelers planning to take a vacation in El Paso should consider extending their trip beyond this vibrant city to take a road trip to some of these nearby small West Texas towns that are perfect for experiencing the warm and welcoming ways of West Texas.

Marfa is one of the most popular small towns in West Texas and is why many artists venture this far west in the state. The desert town is a growing arts hub where visual artists from around the world come to complete residencies or display their work at galleries. Marfa is home to The Chinati Foundation, which was founded by Donald Judd. Visitors to the foundation can view indoor and outdoor art installations on the grounds of a former army base.

Outside of the arts, one of the reasons to visit Marfa is its stellar culinary scene. Margaret’s is a cozy diner with home-style comfort foods that are sure to satisfy. For a fine dining experience, head to Cochineal for a multi-course dinner with an exceptional presentation. Also, be sure to go out at night and look for the the Marfa Mystery Lights at the designated viewing center.

8 Terlingua

Terlingua has a reputation as a ghost town (it even markets itself as such), but in reality, Terlingua is now growing. The tiny town has a population of around 100 people but is growing at a rate of 2.44% per year. The small mining district in Brewster County has a surprising number of attractions for its size. Travelers can get authentic Texas barbecue at DB’s Rustic Iron BBQ in Terlingua, visit the Terlingua Cemetary, or have a meal at the Starlight Theatre Restaurant.

Travelers may see Alpine as a stop along the route to Big Bend National Park, but this lovely West Texas town has a lot to offer. It’s bigger than most towns in this region, home to more than 5800 people. The Brewster County town is also home to Sul Ross State University and has a host of restaurants, bars, and coffee shops. There are also plenty of boutique stores, so this is a great place to shop for souvenirs.

Odessa is a city, not a town, but it’s significantly smaller than West Texas’ major city, El Paso. 5 Fort Davis

Fort Davis is a census-designated community in West Texas with a small population of just over 1,200 people. It’s a historically important location for the Southwest as one of the best-surviving frontier military posts for Native Americans. Fort Davis played an important role in protecting emigrants, freight wagons, and mail coaches from 1854 to 1891 . The Fort Davis National Historic Site also offers 4 miles of hiking trails to explore.

Marathon, Texas, is home to a population of fewer than 500 people and essentially consists of one main street lined with shops, restaurants, and the infamous Gage Hotel. The historic hotel is the heart of the town and was established in 1927. The hotel is gorgeous with unique accommodation options, including rooms inside The Historic Hotel and rooms in a separate building with a courtyard, called Los Portales. The rooms in Los Portales have a true Old Western design scheme and each room has a one-of-a-kind hand-crafted set of wooden doors.

Van Horn is a small town in Culberson County, Texas, just a couple of hours away from El Paso. For travelers already taking a trip around West Texas, it’s worth making a stop in Van Horn to see the famous Launch Site One. This rocket launch site originally put Van Horn on people’s radars in 2021 , when Jeff Bezos drew a crowd with his journey to the edge of space. The site is closed to the public, but travelers can catch a glimpse from the roadway.

2 Fort Stockton

Located close to Odessa, Fort Stockton is a city on the I-10 with a population of just over 8,000 people. Much like Fort Davis, Fort Stockton has an important history for the state, acting as a reminder of frontier life. The post first helped establish a military presence in the region back in 1858. Tour the original buildings and then grab a coffee or some ice cream at Mesquite Tree Gifts, Ice Cream & Coffee Shop.

1 Balmorhea

5 West Texas Destinations (Other Than Marfa) You Need to Visit

There's something romantic about exploring West Texas . The roads seem to stretch on forever, the sky looms larger, and the spaces are wide open. Nothing fills a Texan with wanderlust like the thought of cranking up Willie and Townes and pointing their vehicle towards the west. Marfa is often the big draw to visitors wishing to explore West Texas . But there's a lot more to explore. 

If you're dreaming of a western getaway, here are five other West Texas towns you need to visit.

1. Marathon

Marathon, Texas is a small town (pop. 430) just outside of Big Bend National Park. The quaint town attracts visitors from all over the country who are on their way to Big Bend or stopping to stargaze under Marathon's incredible dark skies. (The town is designated as "Class 1 Dark Sky," a rare status achieved by communities with little to no light pollution.)

To get a glimpse of West Texas nature, visit Post Park, where javelinas, turkeys, and jackrabbits can be seen in the early mornings and late evenings.

One of Marathon's most cherished historic landmarks is the Gage Hotel , built in 1927 for San Antonio banker Alfred S. Gage. The hotel features fine dining at the 12 Gage Restaurant and drinks (they are famous for their Prickly Pear Margarita) at the charming White Buffalo Bar. Don't forget about the stunning Gage Gardens on the property. 27 acres full of lush landscaped gardens are a must-see. 

2. Big Spring

Centered between Midland and Abilene, Big Spring is home to the nearly century-old Hotel Settles . The 15-story, 150-room hotel was once the tallest building between El Paso and Fort Worth. Hotel Settles offers comfort food at the Settles Grill and a social gathering spot with cocktails, beer, and wine at the Pharmacy Bar.

For an incredible view of the city, hike the 200-foot bluff at  Big Spring State Park .

3. Balmorhea

West Texas may be associated with tumbleweeds and cacti, but it's also home to the world's largest spring-fed swimming pool. Balmorhea, Texas , is an oasis in the middle of the West Texas desert. Balmorhea State Park, a 46-acre park located on the San Solomon Springs, is the perfect place to swim or scuba dive in crystal clear waters, picnic, or camp.

West Texas Wonders

West Texas is a great getaway to find a blend of charming towns, a look into history, and the great outdoors. Whether you’re looking to get away as a couple, or bring the whole family along, there are lots of places where you can explore safely and responsibly even amidst the current pandemic.

We were fortunate enough to get a taste of West Texas last year and have already made a list of more spots we want to check out next time we’re there. To help you plan your trip, we’ve put together a list of five spots you should visit.

Recommended Length of Stay: 3 – 5 Days

During our visit, we started and ended our trip here, but it can easily be a stop on your West Texas road trip. El Paso , known as Sun City, is one of the sunniest cities in the world with approximately 300 sunny days a year. That gives you plenty of options, whether you’re into outdoor activities or you’d rather stay inside.

Start off your day at Franklin Mountains State Park . It is one of the largest urban parks in the U.S., and you can hike one of its many trails or do a guided hiking tour of old mines. It’s also the perfect place to bring a picnic lunch to take a break before getting out to explore more.

After a long day enjoying the beautiful outdoors, head back to get washed up at your hotel. We stayed at the Stanton House , which is a brand new, chic hotel. If you’re like us, after a day out, we like to pamper ourselves a bit. So get dressed up and enjoy an upscale dinner at Taft & Diaz downstairs.

The next day, start your morning off by checking out the amazing street art in El Paso. There are beautiful murals and sculptures within walking distance of your hotel. After grabbing lunch, head to the El Paso Museum of Art to escape the heat. They have an amazing collection and feature artists from both El Paso and Juarez. In the evening, grab some food at L&J Cafe , which has been around since 1927 and popular among tourists and locals.

Hueco Tanks State Park

Recommended length of stay: 1 – 2 days.

Before you leave El Paso, head over to Hueco Tanks State Park for a day. Hueco Tanks is widely popular amongst rock climbers and boulderers, but even if you don’t climb, the crazy rock structures and beautiful landscape is a great place to get outside. There are plenty of hikes to explore, and you’ll definitely want to scramble up some of the boulders yourself.

We only had time to stop by for an afternoon and loved exploring the area. Unfortunately, we didn’t have our climbing gear with us, but we’re definitely coming back to climb in the future.

Recommended Length of Stay: 2 – 3 Days

After spending time in the El Paso area, make your way over to Fort Davis . This is a great spot to escape the heat because of its high elevation. As you approach the Davis Mountains , you’ll see why it’s referred to as a sky island. The isolated mountain range is surrounded by an ocean of desert.

Starting in town, check out the Fort Davis Drug Store & Hotel , where you can get food and small supplies. From here, you should walk around town and check out some of the boutiques and architecture. Once you’re done, head over to the Fort Davis National Historic Site . It’s one of the best surviving examples of a frontier military post from the Indian War. Then, if you need to cool off, stop by the Herbert’s Caboose Ice Cream Shop , which is just across the street. Before leaving town, grab some food and supplies to pack a lunch for the next day. We recommend staying at the Indian Lodge , which is a beautiful spot to stay tucked into the mountains.

The next day, explore Davis Mountains State Park. A great place to start is at the Headquarters/Visitor Center, where you can get more information on hikes and points of interest. After exploring some hikes and picnicking for lunch, be sure you don’t miss the Skyline Drive. It’s the perfect spot for sunset and you can even see the Indian Lodge from up there.

If you’re into astronomy, stop by McDonald Observatory to look towards the night skies. They have daily tours and you’ll be amazed at what you can see from one of the darker skies in the US.

No West Texas trip would be complete without a stop in Marfa . The artsy community is full of galleries, exhibits, unique restaurants, and beautiful architecture, not to mention, plenty of photo ops.

Start our out Ballroom Marfa to check out some modern art. You’ll also want to check out Prada Marfa, which is about 30 minutes outside of town, which is extremely popular on Instagram.

After getting your fill of art, grab some food in town. We had lunch at Pizza Foundation , which was delicious and had an outdoor seating area. They do get extremely busy, so it’s recommended to call your order in before you arrive.

In the afternoon, you can check into your hotel. We stayed at Hotel Paisano , which is centrally located and has a ton of history. If you’re a movie buff, check out their Giant memorabilia. After dropping off your stuff, walk around town to see the murals, and don’t miss the Presidio County Courthouse and Central Fire Station. These beautiful buildings are worth checking out and great places to snap a few photos. We especially loved the pink fire station.

Before it gets dark, head out to catch the Marfa Lights. We don’t want to spoil the surprise, but ask the locals what their theories are about what these mysterious lights are.

The next day, head over to the Chinati Foundation , where you’ll find amazing contemporary art pieces big and small. In the afternoon, you can walk through the unique boutiques and artisan shops. When you’re ready to relax, head over to Planet Marfa for a drink, where you’ll find a huge teepee and school bus on the property. It’s a great spot to mingle with locals.

Big Bend was the highlight of our trip. We love exploring National Parks and the Big Bend area is not only home to Big Bend National Park , but you can also check out the small communities in the area, like Lajitas, Terlingua Ghost Town, and Study Butte. We visited as many spots as we could during our short visit, but Big Bend covers a large area, so give yourself plenty of time to explore.

Start off in the park at the Panther Junction Visitor Center to get information and maps. Then head over to Terlingua or Lajitas to use as your home base. Terlingua Ghost Town is a great spot that’s popular with locals. Not only can you explore a historic church and beautiful cemetery, but you can also get a drink and some food at the local watering hole, Starlight Theatre , or check out the other small eateries in town.

For something a bit more upscale, head to Lajitas Golf Resort. You can spend the afternoon on the 18-hole golf course, or if you’re looking for something more exciting, they have zip line tours and Stand Up Paddle Boarding guides (SUP).

During your time in the park, explore each area on separate days so that you don’t get too tired from just driving around. To the southwest, drive along Ross Maxwell Drive for beautiful scenery. Stop in the Castolon Historic Compound to get a glimpse into the history of the area, and take in the views at the Santa Elena Canyon. For a great hike, check out the Window Trail.

The eastern area, which is the farthest, is home to the Langford Hot Springs , where you can go for a soak. Hike the Boquillas Canyon Trail and explore the Rio Grande Village. Before heading home, stop by the Balanced Rock hike.

On the last day, explore the west area close to home. Whether you just want to relax in town, play a round of golf, or SUP on the Rio Grande, there is plenty to do before you end your trip.

Note: More than ever, it’s important to travel safely and responsibly. Please keep these travel tips in mind when planning your trip:

• Wear a mask. Regardless if you have symptoms, masks protect you and the people around you. When wearing one properly, it should cover your nose and mouth.
• Wash your hands regularly. It also helps to have hand sanitizer or wipes with you when you are out so you can wipe down high-contact areas.
• Keep your distance. Whether you are indoors or outdoors, it is still safest to keep at least six feet apart.
• Avoid crowded areas. If you stop somewhere and it’s crowded, move on and come back later.
• Check current hours. Although a lot of places are open, most places are open at a limited capacity or limited hours. It’s best to call ahead or check online to see what their current policies are.
• Outdoor spots aren’t necessarily open either. If they are, not all their facilities will be up and running.
• If you show any signs of COVID-19, including a fever, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, loss of taste or smell, or diarrhea, do not travel.
• If you’ve been in close contact with someone who has COVID-19, do not travel.

The Lone Star State has several different regions, and West Texas is one of the most beautiful regions. Despite being the most remote region, there are so many wonderful things to do in West Texas.

A road trip to West Texas is arguably one of the best Texas road trips you can experience. The region is rich in history, outdoor adventures, delicious cuisine, unique art, and friendly towns. You can visit two National Parks, stay in a bubble dome under the stars, drive one of the most scenic roads, explore a ghost town, find amazing art, and more.

Needless to say, there is an exciting adventure for every type of traveler. To help get you started, I have a list of the 25 BEST things to do in West Texas.

Things to Do in West Texas: Small Towns

West Texas is full of wonderful small towns that are worth visiting. Each one has a charming Old West appeal with different experiences waiting to be discovered.

Visit Fort Davis

Fort Davis is one of my favorite West Texas small towns. Despite being a small town with a 1,099 population, there are so many fun things to do. I recommend spending two days at Fort Davis.

Party Under the Stars at the McDonald Observatory

Hands down, one of the best things to do in West Texas is to attend the Evening Sky Viewing and Star Party at the McDonald Observatory .

The McDonald Observatory is located on top of Mount Locke and Mount Fowlkes in the Davis Mountains – one of the darkest night skies in the continental United States. In other words, this will be one of the best stargazing experiences of your life.

The Evening Sky Viewing takes place at a beautiful amphitheater with a knowledgeable staff member who educates and helps guide guests to find major constellations, bright stars, planets, and satellites. After the Evening Sky Program concludes, the Star Party begins.

At the Star Party, guests sit outside and watch live views of different astronomy findings from a telescope/camera system projected onto a large screen. We saw two galaxies, an asteroid, a nebula, and a star cluster during our Star Party, and it was amazing!

Take a Step Back in Time at Fort Davis Historical Site

The Fort Davis Historic Site is a remarkable piece of Texas history you should not miss. As part of the U.S. National Park Services, it has stood against the test of time as an important example of a Southwest frontier military post of the American Indian Wars.

Several of the buildings are restored and furnished to represent the 1880s period. As you step onto the parade grounds and hear the bugle call (yes, the park actually sounds bugle calls on a daily schedule), you feel a small sense of what life had been like here.

Explore Davis Mountains State Park

Davis Mountains State Park is one of the best State Parks in Texas for several reasons. It has a beautiful landscape, miles of hiking trails, fantastic birdwatching, a scenic drive through the mountains, an Indian Lodge for accommodations, CCC history, and more.

Even if you do not like to hike, a trip to Davis Mountains State Park is definitely one of the best things to do in West Texas. In fact, this is one Texas State Park that you really do not need to hike to be able to enjoy its greatest attractions. You can easily enjoy the scenic views, bird viewing areas, and historical sights by car.

Eat Chicken Fried Steak at Fort Davis Drug Store

Did you know that Chicken Fried Steak was originated in West Texas? So what better place to eat Chicken Fried Steak than in one of the best towns in West Texas?

The Fort Davis Drug Store was an actual drug store from 1913 – 19802. Today, it is a full-service American restaurant.

Moreover, it is one of the best places to eat in Fort Davis. Everything on the menu is delicious, but you must order the Chicken Fried Steak.

The Chicken Fried Steak at Fort Davis Drug Store is the best I have ever tasted. The meat is tender, the breading is crisp, and the flavor is impeccable.

Spend a Day in Marfa

Marfa is one of the best small towns in Texas because of its world-renown art scene, famous Marfa lights, and overall quirky yet Old Western vibe. Exploring this small town for one day is plenty of time to enjoy its best attractions.

Window Shop at Prada Marfa

One of the most iconic roadside attractions in the United States is Prada Marfa. Prada Marfa is a permanent sculptural art installation just outside of Marfa, Texas.

The artists describe this piece as a “pop architectural land art project.” Since its reveal in 2005, it has been one of the most iconic attractions and one of the best things to do in West Texas. 

And yes, there are REAL Prada purses and shoes inside the building!

Marvel at the Chinati Foundation’s Contemporary Art

The Chinati Foundation is a world-renown contemporary art museum founded by minimalist artist Donald Judd. The contemporary art you will view at Chinati Foundation is unlike any art you have ever seen.

Chinati Foundation occupies permanent, large-scale installations that connect art and its surrounding land. In addition to the large-scale installations, the museum also features paintings, sculptures, poems, and drawings by a limited number of artists, including Donald Judd.

Witness the Mysterious Marfa Lights

The Marfa Lights have been a mysterious phenomenon for more than 135 years. People travel from all over to witness the Marfa Lights and make sense of it with their own eyes. Needless to say, witnessing the Marfa Lights is one of the best things to do in West Texas.

So what are the Marfa Lights? Honestly, no one knows – which makes them that more captivating and fun to watch. Scientists and researchers have studied the Marfa Lights, and the answer has been inclusive.

Some believe there is a scientific reason, whereas others say it’s headlights coming from Presidio. A few also believe the lights are supernatural.

People have claimed to see lights dart wildly across the desert. Others say the twinkling lights are colored either red, blue, yellow, or white. I saw two different types of mysterious lights, which was enough to make me believe in the mysterious phenomenon.

A stranger and I witnessed a light blue light dart across the horizon, almost like it was a paint stroke. Additionally, a group of us saw twinkling yellow lights bounce in the sky. Headlights? I do not think so.

The city installed a viewing area for guests to sit and watch. The best time to see the mysterious Marfa Lights is at dusk. I recommend finding a spot before dusk to ensure you do not miss out. As soon as it was dark, we witnessed the lights and continued to see them as the night got darker.

Visit the Ghost Town of Terlingua

Visiting the ghost town of Terlingua itself is one of the best things to do in West Texas. During our 2-week road trip in West Texas, this was the first time we truly felt like we were in the Old West. Just like many others, we love it here!

Dine at Starlight Theatre

I have to admit; I was skeptical that a ghost town in West Texas could have one of the best fine-dining experiences with gourmet dishes. However, I am pleased to say that the Starlight Theatre blew all my expectations. Our dinner at Starlight Theatre was our favorite dining experience of our entire two-week road trip in West Texas.

Attend the Chili Cook-Off

Whether you are competing or watching from the sidelines, the Terlingua International Chili Competition is one of the best events to attend in Texas. The internationally acclaimed chili competition is hosted by the Chili Appreciation Society International (CASI).

Most of the people who attend are chiliheads (competitors), but others are there for pure joy. The weekend has several fun things to enjoy, such as live Country music, an Old Western carnival of performance artists, fortune tellers, and games for prizes.

The annual event is held on the first Saturday of each November. So come with your cowboy hat, boots, best Texas chili recipe , and a fun attitude!

Stay in a Bubble

Terlingua has several awesome glamping accommodations. You can stay in a tipi, lotus tent, retro trailer, casita, or a spinning Volkswagen beetle – but our favorite place to stay in Terlingua is the bubble at Basecamp Terlingua.

Basecamp Terlingua has these magnificent and luxurious bubble domes in the middle of the desert. During the day, you can explore the ghost town or nearby parks. At night, you literally get to sleep under the stars in the comfort of your air-conditioned/heated bubble.

There are four different types of bubbles – one-bedroom, two-bedroom, deluxe two-bedroom, and two-room plus. All bubbles (except for one bedroom) include a hot tub with desert views. Additionally, the two-room plus has a private pool.

These luxurious bubbles book up fast! I am talking 12 months in advance. So make sure you make your reservations as early as possible. Trust me, sleeping in a bubble is one of the best things to do in West Texas.

Spend a Day at Gage Hotel

Spend a full day, or better yet, spend the night at the famous Gage Hotel in Marathon, Texas. The Gage Hotel is known as being of the most historic and luxurious hotels in Texas.

Grab a Drink at the White Buffalo Bar

Calling all tequila and margarita enthusiasts. You MUST grab a drink at the famous White Buffalo Bar at Gage Hotel . It has been named “Best Hotel Bars” by Texas Monthly Magazine due to its extensive tequila selection and delicious handcrafted award-winning margaritas.

Stroll Through the Gage Gardens

Also at the Gage Hotel is the Gage Gardens a true oasis in the West Texas desert. The Gage Gardens encompass 27-acres of pure beauty.

The lush garden has a relaxing quarter-mile walking trail and a one-mile trail with interval exercise stations. Additionally, there are enchanting ponds, exquisite fountains, a rose garden, peaceful sitting areas, a fruit orchard, and even a nine-hole putting green!

It is the perfect place to enjoy a leisurely morning or afternoon in Marathon, Texas.

Things to Do in West Texas: Big Bend

Two of the most beautiful parks in Texas are Big Bend Ranch State Park and Big Bend National Park. Though one park is a State Park and the other a National Park, both parks are respectable in their own merit.

Explore Big Bend Ranch State Park

Big Bend Ranch State Park is the largest and one of the best State Parks in Texas. Therefore, it deserves at least one day of exploring.

Drive the Scenic River Road

One of the best things to do in West Texas is to drive the River Road, also known as El Camino del Rio. The River Road is one of the most scenic drives in Texas.

The 50-mile scenic drive travels between Lajitas and Presidio – mostly within Big Bend Ranch State Park. The road twists and turns alongside the Rio Grande River, going up and over countless mountains.

One mountain being the “Big Hill,” one of the steepest roads in Texas. At the top, you are rewarded with breathtaking views of the Chisos Mountains, the Colorado Canyon, the Rio Grande River, and mountain ranges spanning into Mexico.

Along the scenic River Road are several overlooks to pull over and soak in the views.

Hike a Narrow Slot Canyon

Big Bend Ranch State Park is home to 238 miles of trails – a perfect place to go hiking. One of the best and most popular hikes in the park is Closed Canyon.

Closed Canyon is a short, 1.4-mile, out and back trail. The trail is considered moderate because as you descend deeper into the canyon, there is a 12 ft. drop (easy to get down, difficult to get up).

The hike through the tall and narrow slot canyon is simply wonderful. Unlike most hikes, there is nothing monumental at the end of the trail. In fact, there is a sign to turn back before you get a chance to reach the river (hence the name, closed canyon). The beauty of this hike is the journey through the majestic slot canyon.

Spend 3 Days in Big Bend National Park

A trip to West Texas is not complete without enjoying a few days in Big Bend National Park . There are three different areas of the park to explore, which is why I recommend spending three days in the park.

Hike the Best Trails in Big Bend National Park

Of course, one of the best things to do in Big Bend National Park is hiking. A few of the best hikes at Big Bend National Park include the Lost Mine Trail, Santa Elena Canyon Trail, Window Trail, and Balanced Rock Trail.

Each trail is a great day hike and offers something unique. The level of difficulty ranges from easy to moderate.

The Lost Mine and Window Trail are moderate hikes in the heart of Big Bend in the Chisos Mountains. In comparison, Balanced Rock and Santa Elena Canyon Trail are easy hikes in different parts of the park. Balanced Rock has fun rock scrambling with stunning views, and Santa Elena Canyon takes you deep into the marvelous canyon.

Visit Boquillas, Mexico

Did you know that you can cross the border and visit a small village in Mexico from Big Bend National Park? This is one of the most unique experiences in the park. It provides an opportunity to meet with the locals, taste authentic Mexican cuisine, and purchase handmade wire sculptures and embroidered textiles.

To cross the border, visitors must have proper documentation (a valid passport). For more information on how to get to Boquillas, please refer to NPS .

Soak in a Hot Spring

How many places can you swim in a natural hot spring inside a U.S. National Park and only a few feet away from crossing an international border? I will tell you – just one! This is why taking a dip in Big Bend National Park’s Hot Springs is one of the best things you can experience in West Texas.

There is nothing better than enjoying the healing waters of a hot spring after a long day of hiking. For the best experience, I recommend coming just after sunrise or before sunset for cooler temperatures and golden hour breathtaking views.

See the Milky Way

One of the best things to do in West Texas is to see the Milky Way. To see the Milky Way with your naked eye is a magical event that not many get to experience. Luckily, it is fairly easy to see the Milky Way in Big Bend National Park.

Big Bend National Park is a stargazing wonderland. The park has the least light pollution and darkest skies of any National Park in the Lower 48.

For the best chance of catching a glimpse of the Milky Way in Big Bend National Park, you need to visit in the summer months (June through August) during the middle of the night, i.e., after midnight. Furthermore, you will need clear skies, and binoculars are also recommended. Good luck!

Things to Do in West Texas: Explore More Parks

In addition to the Western landscape and charming small towns, one of the beautiful things of West Texas is the ample amount of parks. In fact, West Texas has two National Parks and nine State Parks. Needless to say, West Texas is an outdoor lovers paradise.

Hike the Tallest Peak in Texas

If you love to hike, this definitely needs to go on your Texas bucket list. You can hike to the tallest peak in Texas at Guadalupe Mountains National Park .

Guadalupe Peak is an 8.5-mile hike with a 3,000 elevation gain that is undoubtedly strenuous. It takes an average of 6-8 hours. Therefore, it is highly recommended to start as early as possible.

Once you reach the peak, you are rewarding with breathtaking views of the Guadalupe Mountains National Park and its surrounding West Texas landscape.

Encounter Bison and Longhorns

The San Angelo State Park is definitely one of the best Texas State Parks because visitors can encounter the Official Texas State Bison Herd and Longhorn Herd.

This is significant because the only other State Park with the Official Texas State Bison Herd is  Caprock Canyons State Park . Furthermore, parts of the Official State of Texas Longhorn Herd are divided into three other State Parks – Cooper Breaks,  Palo Duro , and Lyndon B. Johnson. San Angelo State Park is the ONLY Texas State Park that has BOTH herds.

Moreover, visitors can take a FREE tour to encounter them up-close during their feeding time. Almost every Wednesday and Saturday at 11 am, visitors can partake in the bison and longhorn guided tour.

During this tour, a park ranger will round up the Official Texas State Bison Herd and Longhorn Herd to feed the animals and educate the visitors of each herd. This tour is, hands down, one of my favorite things to do in San Angelo and West Texas.

Swim at the Worlds Largest Natural Fed Pool

Everything is bigger in Texas, which is why the world’s largest natural spring-fed pool is at Balmorhea State Park . The 1.3-acre natural spring-fed pool is 25 feet deep and holds 3.5 million gallons of water. One of the coolest features (no pun intended) is that water temperature stays at 72 to 76 degrees year-round.

People travel from all over to beat the Texas heat and cool off in this amazing natural spring-fed pool. Visitors can swim AND scuba dive in the crystal-clear water among fish.

Explore High-Desert Mountains

Franklin Mountains State Park is the largest state park within a city. It sits just 15 minutes outside El Paso, towering above the city with beautiful over­looks of the Rio Grande.

This Texas State Park is an outdoor lover’s dream for hikers, mountain bikers, and rock climbers. There are over 100 miles of multi-use trails that are considered a mountain bikers paradise. It is also an incredible Native American historical place because you can find colorful pictographs and etched petroglyphs on boulders and rock walls. 

Discover Pictographs and Natural Rock Basins

Another West Texas outdoor wonderland is at Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site . It is an amazing state park for hiking and rock climbing, but it’s also rich in history, with over 2,000 pictographs etched in rock.

Visitors can explore Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site on either a self-guided or guided tour. Keep in mind that only 70 people a day are allowed to take a self-guided tour to preserve the park.

With that said, to have the best experience at this state park, I recommend booking a guided tour because the rangers are very informative about the park’s natural and cultural history.

Go Sand Sledding!

It’s hard to believe there are landlocked sand dunes in Texas, but it’s true! Monahans Sandhills State Park is home to peaks and valleys of sand dunes. It’s honestly so beautiful; you would think you are in the Sahara Desert.

Of course, the best thing to do at Monahans Sandhills State Park is to go sand sledding. At the park’s headquarters, you can purchase a sled for $21 or rent one for only $6. They also have wax for sale – do not forget to wax your sled; it gives you speed!

The best place to go sand sledding is near Sandhills Picnic Pavillion and Willow Draw Camping Area. Hike your way up a sand dune and enjoy the ride down!

So to beat the Texas heat, people travel from all over the Lone Star State to cool off in this historical natural spring-fed pool. Moreover, you can swim AND scuba dive in the crystal-clear water amongst a variety of fish. Needless to say, this oasis is one of the best things to do in West Texas.

Go on a Cave Adventure

The Caverns of Sonora are internationally recognized as one of the most beautiful show caves in the world. Though the active caverns are considered in West Texas, they are uniquely located where the Texas Hill Country meets the Chihuahuan Dessert.

To explore the Caverns of Sonora, visitors must book a guided tour. The Crystal Palace Tour takes guests 155 feet deep into the caverns through narrow passageways with highly decorated stalagmites and stalactites.

The more adventurous and perhaps fun tour is the Discovery Challenge Tour. This tour takes visitors on a thrilling caving adventure to navigate through a maze of off-trail passageways and rappel fifty feet into the Devil’s Pit.

1. Big Bend National Park

The crown jewel of West Texas— Big Bend National Park —should be at the top of your itinerary. This massive national park has incredible canyons, rock formations, desert landscapes, the mighty Rio Grande River, and an entire mountain range within its boundaries. 

When you make the scenic drive to this remote park, you’ll see how easy it is to escape the crowds. One of the best places to do this is Santa Elena Canyon, with its 1,000-ft cliffs separated by the Rio Grande River (swimming or rafting here comes highly recommended!). 

There are some magnificent hikes in Big Bend, including my favorites, the South Rim Trail and Emory Peak—both will give you sweeping views of the park. Afterwards, head towards Boquillas Canyon to visit the historic Langford Hot Springs for a warm dip on a cool desert evening. 

2. McDonald Observatory – Fort Davis, TX

West Texas is renowned for its stargazing, making up one of just 18 International Dark Sky Reserves in the world. Arguably the best place to be amazed by these stars in West Texas is McDonald Observatory , located on the top of a mountain near Fort Davis. 

This acclaimed observatory is a leading champion of astronomy education and research around the world. With five research telescopes, including its powerful Hobby-Eberly Telescope, the observatory studies far away galaxies and searches for undiscovered planets. 

You can tour the observatory during the day for some impressive West Texas views. However, you’ll definitely want to make time to go to the observatory’s star parties to see constellations and other celestial wonders up close. 

3. Marfa Lights – Marfa, TX

A local phenomenon known as the Marfa Lights has been a mainstay in West Texas lore for several decades. Here mysterious ghost-like orbs of light are often spotted at night floating across the desert landscape—and no one really knows why (though wild theories abound!). 

About nine miles outside Marfa you can try to see these mystery lights yourself at the Marfa Lights Viewing Center . This impressive roadside viewing area provides a great place for an evening stakeout and picnic to watch the desert sun go down and perhaps catch a glimpse of the legendary lights. 

4. The River Road

There is a lonely, winding highway that connects the small Texas towns of Lajitas and Presidio on the US-Mexico border called FM 170—or better known as The River Road . For the lucky few who venture out onto it, they’ll experience one of the most scenic drives in the United States. 

If you dare to make the journey, you’ll dance along the Rio Grande River and see numerous Instagram-worthy views of mountains, deserts, historical sites, canyons, and even an old Western movie set. Expect to make multiple stops along the way—even just to sit and ponder the quiet landscape. 

One of the hallmarks of FM 170 is its remoteness, so you should be prepared. With little to no civilization along the route, make sure you have enough gas before you go! 

5. Balmorhea State Park

When you visit West Texas, one of the first things you’ll notice is the heat, especially in the summer. Any chance to escape the high desert temperatures is a welcome opportunity. 

One of the best places to beat the West Texas heat is Balmorhea State Park . Containing the world’s largest spring-fed swimming pool, the park draws travelers from all over ready to take a dip in its refreshingly clear waters. 

This historic pool covers over an acre with 3.5 million gallons of water that remains 72 to 76 degrees Fahrenheit all year. After your swim, make time to visit the nearby historic Calera Chapel for some quintessential West Texas photo-ops. 

6. El Cosmico – Marfa, TX

The dusty West Texas town of Marfa feels like an odd choice for a burgeoning hub of artists, hipsters, cowboys, and occasional celebrities. But the eclectic community has become a must-see for being just that, in its own quirky, almost improbable way.

Definitely the most memorable place to stay in town and experience Marfa’s unique vibes is El Cosmico . An Instagrammer’s dream, El Cosmico is a glamping destination, bohemian campground, and community hangout all in one.

I recommend a stay at one of El Cosmico’s refurbished vintage trailers, tepees, or yurts. If you’re looking for something more upscale, book a night at the nearby historic Hotel Paisano , famous for being the headquarters for the actors and crew during the filming of the all-time classic movie Giant . 

7. Guadalupe Mountains National Park

Are you a fan of dramatic mountain landscapes? If so, you’ll want to see the tallest mountains in all of Texas at Guadalupe Mountains National Park .

In fact, the best way to experience this national park is summiting Guadalupe Peak, Texas’ highest point at 8,751 ft in elevation. It’s a tough but rewarding hike that can be done in one day, and the views at the peak will make you feel like you’re on top of the world. 

Other highlights of the park include McKittrick Canyon, El Capitan, Frijole Ranch, and the Salt Basin Dunes. After your visit, make the 30 minute drive to nearby Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico for an added bonus. 

8. Terlingua Ghost Town – Terlingua, TX

Calling itself a “ghost town,” the former mining community of Terlingua near Big Bend National Park stands out for its offbeat vibes and unconventional mix of art, music, and history. Such a combination makes a visit to Terlingua Ghost Town worthwhile during your West Texas escape! 

The local pastime in Terlingua is hanging out at the Starlight Theatre , either by sitting on the porch to soak in the mountain views or enjoying live music over a meal. If you’re an early riser, head next door to the hip Espresso Y Poco Mas for coffee on its picturesque patio. 

With its laid back culture, you’ll want to wander around town and explore the abandoned buildings and art installations, as well as the old-school Terlingua Cemetery. Then, visit nearby Lajitas to meet the town’s mayor, a beer-drinking goat named Clay Henry. 

9. Fort Davis National Historic Site

If you enjoy Old West history, include in your West Texas itinerary a visit to Fort Davis National Historic Site , nested in the Davis Mountains. 

One of the best surviving examples of a frontier military outpost from the Indian Wars, Fort Davis National Historic Site will transport you back to the time of Trans-Pecos wagon trains and mail coaches from 1854 to 1891. 

Here you can explore 24 historic buildings, including army barracks and refurbished officer’s homes that reflect 1880s life, as well as over 100 ruins. The park also provides a fascinating history of the famous Buffalo Soldiers who were stationed there after the Civil War. 

10. Gage Hotel – Marathon, TX

Texas is big, y’all. After you’ve likely been driving for hours on wide-open, desolate roads to reach West Texas, the tiny town of Marathon is a welcome sight. 

In Marathon, you’ll want to rest awhile and experience a legendary West Texas oasis of upscale luxury— the Gage Hotel . Originally built in 1927, this iconic hotel was designed by famed architect Henry Trost and reflects the classic Texas styles and charms of yesteryear. 

While an incredible place to stay on your West Texas adventure, even if you can’t, the Gage Hotel is still a must-see. Enjoy a romantic dinner at the hotel’s classy 12-Gage Restaurant or a margarita at the White Buffalo Bar—famously featured on celebrity traveler Anthony Bourdain’s show Parts Unknown .

Whether you’re a fan of high fashion or not, you’ll want to see the only Prada store in West Texas— Prada Marfa . Actually a famous art installation, Prada Marfa draws visitors from around the world paying homage to this iconic spectacle in the middle of nowhere. 

The architectural work of art was designed to meet Prada’s aesthetic codes, and the fashion giant even donated some items from its own collection to be featured in the installation. 

After you’ve taken the ultimate West Texas selfie at Prada Marfa, make the drive to Marfa nearby to see the renowned Chinati Foundation . This contemporary art museum features the minimalist work of artist Donald Judd, who started the movement that made Marfa the global art community it is today.

Catch a Movie at Starlight Theatre

The famed Starlight Theatre is the centerpiece of Terlingua, the quirky West Texas “ghost town” located 12 miles from the Mexican border. Terlingua is a former abandoned mining town (which is where the “ghost” part comes in). However, a small but vibrant community resides here today—just under 60 permanent residents, to be exact. What used to be the former Chisos Movie Theater, the Starlight is where everyone in town comes to have a beer, chow down on Tex-Mex food, and enjoy the sounds of live bluegrass and country tunes.

Although small, the El Paso Museum of Art (EPMA) is an utter delight. Located inside a former Greyhound station, the EPMA houses a permanent collection of more than 7,000 works from the Byzantine era to the present. Among the museum's incredible Baroque and Renaissance masterpieces are works by Van Dyck, Botticelli, and Canaletto. Hit the Trails at Big Bend Ranch State Park

Hiking in Big Bend Ranch State Park is an outdoor lover’s dream come true. The park receives very few visitors, especially when compared to its flashier neighbor, Big Bend National Park . (In fact, you’ll likely be one of just a handful of hikers during your time here.) If you’re up for it, the Rancherias Canyon Trail is a challenging three-day hike that cuts through the Chihuahuan Desert, dipping into several small canyons and cresting the ridge of the Bofecillos Mountains. If you’d prefer to do a shorter hike, Closed Canyon and the Cinco Tinajas Loop can both be done in a day. 

Marvel at Large-Scale Minimalist Art at the Chinati Foundation

You might say that the Chinati Foundation is the coolest art museum in Texas. Located on a 340-acre tract of desert land in Marfa that includes abandoned U.S. Army artillery sheds, Chinati was the creation of Donald Judd, an artist who essentially transformed many of Marfa’s downtown buildings with his permanent installations (along with those of his contemporaries, Dan Flavin and John Chamberlain). It’s a truly surreal sight, where large-scale minimalist art meets vast Texan skies and desert.

Drive One of the Most Beautiful Roads in the US

Driving the legendary River Road at least once should be at the top of any Texas bucket list , not just a West Texas bucket list. This is one of the most beautiful drives in the entire country—skirting the southern border of West Texas, this stretch of FM-170 takes you through the splendor of Big Bend Ranch State Park, with the high point (literally) being the top of a pass with stomach-churning views of the Rio Grande spooling out below. If you want to make a few stops along the way, consider visiting the Mariscal Mine , which produced almost a quarter of the total amount of the country's mercury from 1900 to 1943, or hiking the 6.5-mile, round-trip Mariscal Rim Trail.

Go Off-Grid at Davis Mountains State Park

Just a few miles from Fort Davis, Davis Mountains State Park offers a wonderful introduction to the Chihuahuan Desert. The sheer beauty of this area (nicknamed the “Texas Alps”)—vast grasslands, stark mountains, and lush, tree-studded woodlands—must be seen to be believed. You’ll find some of the most unique wildlife in Texas here, too. And if you really want to get an off-grid experience, the Davis Mountains Preserve is as wild as it gets out. Attend a Star Party at the McDonald Observatory

For a uniquely West Texan treat, plan to attend a Star Party at the McDonald Observatory. One of the world’s most well-known observatories, McDonald has five research telescopes of various sizes, including the 433-inch Hobby-Eberly, one of the largest optical telescopes in the world. During this beloved night under the stars, visitors are guided through the cosmos by one of the observatory’s (very knowledgeable) staffers and are even allowed to look through the telescopes. Star Parties last about two hours long.

Spend the Night at the Gage Hotel

The impressively grand Gage Hotel in Marathon is the utmost in laid-back desert luxury lodging. Built in 1927 by acclaimed architect Henry Trost, this 45-room hotel is more than just a place to lay your head at night; it’s a historic destination in its own right. During your visit, you can enjoy a range of amenities, including a heated salt-water pool, bocce bar court, and a 27-acre botanic garden—which comes complete with a fruit orchard and nine-hole putting green. Bonus: the Gage is just a 40-minute drive from Big Bend National Park.

Go Snorkeling at Balmorhea State Park

A giant spring-fed pool in the middle of the desert? You’d better believe it— Balmorhea State Park is one-of-a-kind (and the biggest spring-fed pool in the world, in fact). This sparkling blue, high-desert oasis in the Davis Mountains is fed by nearby San Solomon Springs, the largest spring in the surrounding area. Nothing beats a soak in Balmorhea, especially on a hot day; these aquamarine waters (which are populated by fish, turtles, and other aquatic creatures) stay between 72 and 76 degrees, year-round. Snorkel or scuba dive with catfish, Mexican tetra fish, and the Comanche Spring pupfish, or explore the park's desert wetlands known as ciénagas.

Take a Day Trip to Alpine

Hike the Highest Point in Texas at Guadalupe Mountains State Park

West Texas is perhaps one of the most desolate places in the United States. You can drive for hours and still not reach any sizable city. But a West Texas road trip can also be an intriguing and unique experience. 

You’ll see the terrain turn from barren deserts to lovely mountains (yes, West Texas has mountains) and then back again. You’ll drive through the tiniest of towns and wonder what people who live there actually do. And while it may sound like there isn’t  much worth driving hours for, there are actually a lot of interesting places to visit in West Texas.

Tips for planning the perfect West Texas road trip

Growing up in West Texas I took for granted the uniqueness of this region. It truly is one of the best places in Texas to visit . West Texas is not only desolate though, it is BIG. So during your West Texas road trip, take time to appreciate the wide openness and enjoy getting away from the busyness of life.

You are truly venturing where the WIFI is weak (or non-existent) and where you will feel very off the grid .

If you’re planning a West Texas road trip, here are some tips that will make your vacation more enjoyable.

Fill up your gas tank every chance you get

Because of the desolation of the region make sure you have enough gas or petrol in your car’s fuel tank. In this area of the world, I don’t like to let the meter get below a quarter of a tank. 

It may be awhile before you come across another gas station.

While there are a lot of things to see in West Texas, gas stations aren’t one of them. They are few and far between, so if you are planning a West Texas road trip, top off the gas tank every chance you get.

Expect moments with no phone service

Also, have plenty of music or audio books downloaded because your radio won’t work out here, unless you have satellite radio. In fact, there will be numerous long stretches of road where you will have no phone service, no radio, and no other cars in sight. 

Despite the lack of phone service or even radio, a West Texas road trip is undoubtedly one of the most memorable and fun Texas road trips .

Spend a night in one of the larger West Texas cities, like El Paso or Midland

Depending on where you are coming from and how you are getting to West Texas, the closest airports are in Midland-Odessa or El Paso.

If flying into Midland-Odessa, it may be worth spending a day exploring, as there are several fun things to do in Midland , as well. 

Likewise, El Paso is a large city, and you’ll find plenty to do there to pass the time for a day.

Plan for the weather

West Texas is known for its extreme weather conditions, so it’s crucial to pack accordingly. Summers can be scorching hot, with temperatures exceeding 100°F (38°C). Winters, on the other hand, is mild, but the nights in the desert can be surprisingly cold. 

Check the forecast and pack versatile clothing, including layers, sunscreen, a hat, sturdy footwear, and plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Things to do on a West Texas road trip

West Texas, with its vast landscapes and rugged charm, offers a captivating experience for adventurers seeking a taste of the wild frontier. This region is brimming with natural beauty and hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

On any West Texas road trip there are a few things everyone must do and see. Here are our top 12 things to do and places to visit in West Texas.

Go for a Hike in Big Bend National Park

No visit to West Texas is complete without exploring the remarkable Big Bend National Park. 

Big Bend National Park may be one of the lesser visited national parks in the United States. Simply because of its remote location along the West Texas-Mexico border, you won’t find a ton of tourists in the park. 

But Big Bend is beautiful. Its breathtaking vistas rival many of the popular national parks you’ll see on a northern Arizona and southern Utah road trip .

Although it can often feel as hot as the surface of the sun in Big Bend, it is a wonderful place to hike, tune in with nature, and search for native wildlife.

One of the more popular hikes takes you through Saint Elena Canyon cliffs that tower 1,500 feet above you. 

Another popular hike, the Window Trail lets you witness the stunning Chisos Mountains through the frame of a natural window. The hike is roughly 5 ½ miles long and involves a challenging climb out of Oak Creek Canyon on the return trip. 

Looking for a shorter hike in Big Bend? Check out Closed Canyon. This 1.5 mile trail takes you through a slot canyon, similar to the narrow slot canyons famously found in Utah .

Plan to camp out at least one night if you want to do  either of these stunning hikes.

Cross the Mexican Border in a Rowboat to Visit a Rural Village

While you’re in Big Bend National Park you can actually cross the Rio Grande River and venture into Mexico for lunch. 

Doing so will require a short ride on a rowboat and a mile-long journey on a donkey to get to the rural village of Boquillas del Carmen . This is one of the most unique travel experiences we’ve ever had, and the Mexican food was definitely worth the trip! 

Don’t forget to bring your passport!  Although the Boquillas Crossing isn’t your typical border crossing, it is still a legal one, and the same rules apply.

Visit a Ghost Town

Just outside of Big Bend National Park , you’ll find an abandoned mining town that went bust.

Terlingua is now a ghost town with decaying buildings, old mining shafts, and a cemetery that has a creepy, haunted feeling. There are still a few dozen residents who live in Terlingua. They basically cater to the tourists who stop through on their way to or from Big Bend. 

You’ll find some restaurants, a trading post, and even a hotel and some unique glamping yurts. Just don’t expect to find any chains like McDonald’s or Holiday Inn in Terlingua. 

It is a great place to stay if you want to feel completely off the beaten path, star-gaze, and tap into the serenity of solitude.

Visit an Old Military Post in Fort Davis

Fort Davis is an interesting look at military life in the Southwest back in the 1800s. This well-preserved military post serves as a reminder of the significant role the military troops served in the Anglo settlement of the western frontier. 

Originally established in 1854, Fort Davis served as a crucial outpost along the San Antonio-El Paso Road, providing protection for settlers during a time of westward expansion.

The military’s primary purpose at Fort Davis was to defend the region from Indians and Mexican soldiers in the area. 

At Fort Davis, you can take a self-guided tour of the five restored buildings and explore the ruins of about 100 more. The fort’s restored buildings include barracks, officers’ quarters, and the hospital.

The fort’s museum showcases exhibits that delve into the area’s Native American history, Buffalo Soldiers, and the challenges faced by those stationed at this remote outpost.

Experience the Quirkiness of the Artistic Enclave of Marfa, Texas

Marfa, Texas has become somewhat of a hub for quirky artistry. One of the best small towns in America to visit , this tiny town has risen to fame over the past few years. 

Marfa has attracted celebrities like Beyonce and Matthew McConaughey who have come to see what this West Texas gem is all about. 

Known for its outdoor, minimalist art installations, visitors to Marfa should plan to check out the Chinati Foundation , a contemporary art museum featuring large-scale installations by the likes of Donald Judd.

You can also have a meal at Food Shark , a converted school bus-turned-food truck, and then enjoy some live music and refreshing drinks in the beer garden at Planet Marfa . In Marfa, you’ll feel inspired by the creatives and artists who live and visit this eclectic town.

Watch Mystery ‘Ghost Lights’ Dance Across the Horizon

About 10 miles outside the town of Marfa, Texas you’ll find a small observatory overlooking, well, nothing. Only empty deserts surround the building as far as the eye can see. 

But at night, people will gather on the back observation deck of the building in hopes of catching a glimpse of an unexplained phenomenon – the Marfa lights . Ask anyone who grew up in West Texas about Marfa and they will tell you about the ‘Marfa lights’. 

After nightfall, strange glowing orbs appear off in the distance. The lights move around, even dance a little. 

The enigmatic Marfa Lights have fascinated visitors for decades. Head to the Marfa Lights Viewing Area on U.S. Highway 67 to witness these elusive phenomena.

Whether they are atmospheric reflections, car headlights, or something truly unexplained, observing the dancing lights in the desert is an otherworldly experience that will leave you in awe.

To my knowledge and in all my research, I’ve yet to find a true scientific explanation for the lights. While there are plenty of speculations, everything from UFOs to natural gas clouds, no one really knows why these ghost lights appear.

 Swim in the World’s Largest Spring-fed Swimming Pool

The small town of Balmorhea, Texas is home to the world’s largest spring-fed swimming pool. 

The Balmorhea State Park is the perfect place to cool off on a hot West Texas day. The pool is home to various types of fish and has a constant flow of natural spring water feeding into it. In fact, more than 15 million gallons of water flow through the pool each day. 

The water is crystal clear and cold. Reaching depths of 25 feet, it’s also a popular place for scuba diving in West Texas. Be sure to pack your snorkel gear, and swim among the fish in this incredible and amazing place to go in West Texas!

Climb the Tallest Peak in Texas

West Texas not only has mountains, it is home to the highest mountain in the state. The summit of Guadalupe Peak is 8,751 feet above sea level. It’s a challenging hike mainly because of the hot, arid desert climate, but a rewarding one. 

Located in Guadalupe National Park , if you plan to hike Guadalupe Peak , make sure you bring plenty of water. You will go through water much faster than you expect because of the extreme heat and dry climate.

If visiting both Big Bend and Guadalupe National Parks, you may want to buy a national park pass , as well, which will cover admission into both national parks.

Sleep in a teepee

If the idea of sleeping in a teepee, yurt, or a vintage trailer sounds like your kind of lodging, then you’ll love El Cosmico in Marfa.

This one-of-a-kind desert retreat is like a whimsical glamping destination blended with a hippie commune. It offers a truly unique experience for travelers seeking a blend of nature, art, and unconventional accommodations.

While you’ll have to share a communal bathroom with other teepee dwellers, the accommodations are far from basic. With Bohemian décor, electricity, and brick floors, you won’t feel like you’re roughing it in the desert here. 

The other communal spaces foster a sense of community, with outdoor hammocks and communal kitchens that encourage conversation with other travelers and fellow adventurers staying at the property.

Terlingua also has unique teepee accommodations as well as yurts and bubble accommodations located at Basecamp Terlingua .

Take a picture in the middle of nowhere

Far West Texas is the perfect place to unleash your inner “Instagram model” and take the cliché middle of the road photo. 

After driving for miles, and miles , and miles without seeing a single other car on the road, we decided to pull over for an impromptu photo shoot. 

Nothing defines West Texas more in my opinion than a sleepy road without any traffic for as far as the eye can see framed with the expansive blue skies above. 

I have been gone from West Texas for half my life, but this view always makes me feel ‘home’ again.

Do a little window shopping at the Prada store outside of Marfa

While you’re still in “Instagram model” mode, head 30 minutes west of Marfa to the town of Valentine . You won’t find much there except a tiny replica of a Prada storefront .

Yes, in the middle of the far West Texas desert, you’ll find car after car pulling over on the side of the road so visitors can strike their best pose. 

The storefront is just another quirky art installation in this part of Texas, made famous by celebrities and fashion influencers set on capturing the perfect photo. 

Created by artists Elmgreen and Dragset in 2005, this permanently sealed storefront resembles a genuine Prada boutique, complete with pristine window displays showcasing luxury goods. However, upon closer inspection, visitors realize that the store is non-functional.

So you won’t find anything to actually buy. You’ll have to get your Texas souvenirs elsewhere, but go ahead, dress up, take a picture, and #doitforthegram at this iconic West Texas landmark.

Go Sandboarding on natural West Texas sand dunes

Monahans Sandhills State Park offers a mesmerizing landscape that beacons photographers and adventure seekers alike. 

Spanning over 200 square miles, this natural desert oasis consists of rolling sand dunes that shift and reshape with the strong West Texas winds. 

The golden-hued dunes stretch as far as the eye can see, inviting adventure seekers to explore their sandy slopes on sleds and sand boards.

It is one of the most unique places to visit in West Texas and provides an otherworldly experience that captures the spirit of Texas wilderness at its finest.

Perhaps one of my favorite things to do on a West Texas road trip is actually one of the simplest. 

At sunset, stop and appreciate the beauty. Sunsets in West Texas are truly special. It’s like God turns the West Texas sky into a brilliant canvas of orange, pink, purple, and blue.

Photos never do it justice, but when the sun starts to set in West Texas, stop what you are doing and appreciate the moment.

Why you should take a West Texas road trip

Texas has so many micro-cultures. From the metropolitan vibes of Dallas and the cowboy culture of Fort Worth , to the hipster atmosphere of Austin and the Latin influence in San Antonio, the state is as diverse as it is large. 

But to truly understand the entire state, you can’t skip the vast and often excluded area of West Texas. It has a unique culture in itself, one that truly has to be experienced to appreciate it.

Great article and pictures on West Texas! I have traveled to Midland to visit family and sure wish I’d read your experiences before now. NEXT TIME I’ll be heading farther West in Texas. It seems like its own country, so diverse and something wonderful no matter what your idea of Paradise happens to be.

I love this post! I grew up in Dallas and West TX is one of my parents’ favorite places so many childhood trips there, and then as an adult I took my husband. Hopefully sometime soon we’ll take our kids. Love al your recommendations- Big Bend, Balmorrhea especially! I’d add Fort Davis too- there’s Davis Mountains State Park with a really neat 1930’s era lodge plus the actual fort and the town.

I drove past that Prada place this summer on our way to Fort Davis. We didn’t stop because I didn’t see it until we were whizzing past. I did a double-take in the rear view mirror though. Did that say Prada?!?! Haha! I’m definitely planning to stop if we ever go that way again. The drive from Fort Davis back towards I-10 heading east was very scenic as well.

I grew up in a small West Texas town, Kermit. I now live in Southeast Texas and I miss my old stomping grounds. My husband and I raised 2 boys in Midland and we make it back there to see family. Home will always be West Texas. The beautiful sunsets, see for miles and the wonderful places mentioned. Once a West Texas Girl always a West Texas Girl.

I come from West Texas, the Ft. Stockton area. My Great-grandmother, Annie Riggs owned the Riggs Hotel which is now the Annie Riggs Musuem. I lived in that area until I was 6 years old and revisited my Grandfather Barney Riggs Jr. and Grandmother Rosemary Riggs in the 50’s when they lived in the Hotel to keep it safe. When one visits the area, they step back in time and realize how rough the area was then and how tough West Texans had to be. It has a beauty all it’s own and anyone that visits should read your information so they can truly appreciate the beauty of the land.

In March of 1989 we took at trip to Fort Stockton, then Alpine, Fort Davis, and then camped in Big Bend National Park. It was AWESOME! All the places you mentioned are cool. Alpine needs to be added to the list. Hope to go back again.

Your Guide to Exploring West Texas' Most Beautiful Places

Roaming bands of bison, rugged sandstone canyons gleaming orange in abundant sunshine, and valleys blanketed by verdant cottonwood trees and flowering cactuses. Welcome to the wild side of West Texas, a region unlike any other in the Lone Star State. Immerse yourself in all its natural beauty at two of the state’s most spectacular outdoor destinations, Caprock Canyons State Park and Palo Duro Canyon State Park.

Exploring both should top your Texas travel bucket list, and Lubbock is the ideal starting point. Not only is the “Hub City” a 90-minute drive from both parks, it’s also easy to reach via daily direct flights from Austin, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Las Vegas, and Phoenix. Beyond the convenience, Lubbock is home to a wide array of hotels, a diverse dining scene, and numerous world-class wineries for when you need some rest and relaxation.

Caprock Canyons State Park & Trailway

Covering nearly 24 square miles of sweeping grasslands and rocky cliffs splashed with vibrant shades of orange, Caprock Canyons is the kind of place where you could get joyfully lost in. You wouldn’t be the first. Formed by the flowing waters of Little Red River over millions of years, the colorful shale, sandstone, siltstone, and mudstone canyons are separated by sprawling valleys of juniper and scrub oak trees, yuccas, and cactuses. These lush lands have provided for various groups of people over 12,000 years, from early Native Americans to Spanish pathfinders and famed 19th-century cattlemen like Charles Goodnight. Today, the park is home to the official Texas State Bison Herd, one of the last groups of southern plains bison that was rescued from extinction in the 1990s.

Traversing Caprock Canyons’ more than 90 miles of trails provides a compelling glimpse of Texas at its most remarkable. Trails range from easy jaunts on flat-top hills to the challenging Haynes Ridge Overlook Trail, a 2.3-mile path that ascends 600 feet to park’s highest peak that provides a tremendous overlook of the surrounding landscape. Other trails take you along canyon rims and trickling creeks past stunning rock formations and through lands cattle once roamed. If mountain biking is your thing, follow the Caprock Canyons Trailway 15 miles south to Clarity Tunnel, where about half a million bats reside from April to October. The trailway runs for miles east and south from the state park, giving you plenty of space to knock around.

When you’re not hiking or mountain biking, find your way to the 120-acre Lake Theo. Set among rolling grasslands and towering bluffs, the lake affords a serene place to camp, swim, and fish for trout. No matter how you enjoy your time in Caprock Canyons, keep an eye out for the bison, as you won’t see them anywhere else.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park

Travel deep into the heart of the Texas Panhandle and you’ll find a true natural wonder. Canyon walls gleaming orange in bright sunshine, otherworldly rock formations, and scenic trails lined with mesquite and juniper trees await at Palo Duro Canyon . About 120 miles long and 20 miles wide, and with a depth of roughly 800 feet, Palo Duro is the second largest canyon in the country. Formed over millions of years, the canyon is a majestic showcase of nature’s power. Descend into its depths and you’ll see vibrant layers of rock in the canyon walls that tell a story 250 million years in the making.

These days, one of the best ways to experience all the canyon has to offer is by tying on hiking shoes and exploring more than 30 miles of trails. If a strenuous, yet rewarding, hike is what you’re after, traverse either the Upper Comanche or the Lower Comanche trails. The former takes you across a river and deep through Comanche territory to an overlook halfway up the canyon wall, while the latter meanders beneath Fortress Cliff and past spring-fed streams and Rocky Mountain junipers. Meanwhile, the Juniper/Cliffside trail offers a more easygoing stroll past percolation caves carved by moving water over time. No time in Palo Duro Canyon is complete without seeing the Lighthouse, the park’s iconic rock formation. Follow the Lighthouse trail to see it for yourself, and make sure to bring plenty of water.

Of course, there are other ways to uncover Palo Duro Canyon’s many wonders. Ride horseback on the canyon floor on a guided tour with Old West Stables or find your way along many of the trails on your mountain bike. The canyon’s lush landscapes and variety of terrain makes it a veritable hotspot for birdwatching. Golden-fronted woodpeckers are among the many birds you can see throughout the year, while summer welcomes such colorful species as painted buntings and Bullock’s orioles. Keep a keen eye and you may even see bobcats, coyotes, and wild turkeys, as well as members of the official State Longhorn Herd (descendants of cattle brought by the Spanish in the 1500s).

How to get around West Texas

Like most of Texas, the best way to get around West Texas is to explore on your own by car!

Okay, everyone grab their best vintage Texas tee and let’s get going!

1. Go stargazing at McDonald Observatory

One of the most picturesque things to do in West Texas is go stargazing at the McDonald Observatory .

Located on the peak of Mount Locke and Mount Fowlkes in the Davis Mountains, the Observatory provides you an opportunity to see some of the clearest and darkest skies in the United States.

To help you make the most of your visit, the Observatory offers an Evening Sky Viewing program from its cavernous amphitheater, along with workshops and special viewing sessions.

2. Visit Davis Mountains State Park

The Davis Mountain State Park is one of the most scenic and popular attractions of West Texas.

With an expansive landscape of jagged mountains, rugged hiking trails, tranquil birdwatching and ample photography opportunities, there’s plenty to keep you occupied.

You can even book into one of the campsites or the Indian Lodge with its own in-house restaurant and exclusive swimming pool.

There are also equestrian campsites so bring your own horse to take a ride through one of the many riding trails in the park.

3. Visit Fort Davis National Historic Site

Fort Davis is one of the best preserved frontier military posts in the United States, and is a landmark piece of history you should not miss when in West Texas.

Part of the U.S. National Park Services , the site includes numerous restored buildings, parade grounds and an informative museum to help you learn more about the history and significance of the American Indian Wars, and the role that Fort Davis played during the time.

Whilst you’re there, keep an eye out for the costumed interpreters who are on hand to provide an authentic historical flair to your visit.

4. Marvel at Prada Marfa

Chances are you’ve seen a photo of the Prada Marfa store at the edge of a deserted highway.

This iconic and permanent sculptural art installation is just one of the many artworks that you can marvel at during your stop in Marfa.

Despite being a small town in West Texas, Marfa has a world-renowned art scene and a reputation as the home of many memorable examples of minimalist art.

Aside from the luxury designer store, other notable attractions include Building 98 and the outdoor installations displayed by the Chinati Foundation on an old army base.

5. See the Marfa Lights

When visiting Marfa, keep an eye out for the Marfa Lights .

This mysterious phenomenon has been puzzling locals and travelers for almost 150 years.

Visible from the U.S. Route 67 on Mitchell Flat, just east of Marfa, visitors travel to see the beams of dancing lights, whose source is yet to be determined.

Believed by some to be the work of extraterrestrial beings, and others to be reflections of headlights and campfires, the lights are a fascinating and atmospheric show, and one of the most unique things to see in West Texas.

The city has installed a viewing platform for visitors to comfortably watch the Marfa Lights at dusk.

6. Attend the Terlingua International Chili Competition

One of the most fun things to do in West Texas is attend the Terlingua International Chili Competition .

Hosted by the Chili Appreciation Society International , this festival is hosted in the spirit of chili, charity and fun.

Generally held on the first weekend of November, the weekend offers various family friendly activities to get involved in.

From live country music and performances, fortune tellers, rides, games and of course the all-important best Texas chili cook off, this competition is a great way to get a taste of the true Texas spirit.

7. Camp at the Basecamp Terlingua Bubble

When visiting Terlingua in West Texas, you have several unique accommodation options to choose from.

One of the most sought after accommodation providers are Basecamp Terlingua which have created a number of quirky and luxury camping options for visitors to get a unique overnight experience.

You can choose from a retro trailer, a luxury tipi tent, a spacious lotus or the highly sought after bubble dome.

9. Visit the Big Bend Ranch State Park

The Big Bend Ranch State Park is the biggest state park in Texas and one of the best in the Western half of the state.

There’s plenty to see and do in Big Bend Ranch, including horse riding, hiking and four-wheel driving trails.

Also designated an International Dark Sky Park , there’s an uninterrupted expanse of dark sky for stargazing aficionados.

With some of the least light pollution and darkest skies of any national parks in the country, there’s plenty of opportunity to be star-struck at Big Bend.

10. Drive the El Camino del Rio

One of the most fun things to do in West Texas is to drive the El Camino del Rio , also known as the River Road.

Amongst one of the most scenic drives in the state, the River Road is primarily located within the Big Bend Ranch State Park, spanning from the towns of Lajitas to Presidio.

Hugging the Rio Grande, this is a stunning 50-mile scenic drive with seemingly endless twists and turns, traversing mountains and riverside vistas.

You’ll want to keep your camera ready here.

11. Hike in West Texas

For hiking fans, there are plenty of trails to explore, catering to all levels from beginners to the advanced.

Some of the most popular hikes are located in Big Bend National Park , including the popular Lost Mine Trail in the heart of the Chisos Mountains .

The Lost Mine Trail is a three hour round trip, and suitable for all experience levels.

Another popular and rewarding trail is the Hot Springs Historic Trail, which rewards hikers with soothing hot springs to cool off in before making their way back to the trailhead.

12. Hop across to Mexico

One of the most unique things to do in West Texas is to actually hop across the U.S. border and visit Mexico.

Boquillas is a small Mexican village that adjoins Big Bend Ranch National Park and allows visitors to experience the warm Mexican hospitality.

After parking your vehicle at the Boquillas Crossing , you can either walk across the river crossing at low tide or be ferried across in a small row boat for a small fee.

Once you’ve crossed over to the Mexican side of the river, you can continue your journey on foot, in a car or on horseback.

Spend a few hours visiting the local village, tasting authentic Mexican cuisine at the various eateries and admiring the handmade souvenirs and textiles available for purchase.

13. Visit El Paso Museum of Art

A small but impressive museum, the El Paso Museum of Art makes for one of the most interesting places to see and visit in West Texas.

Located in a former Greyhound terminal, the free to visit El Paso Museum of Art has a permanent collection of art spanning a number of centuries and artistic styles.

Fans of Baroque and Renaissance art will be delighted at the works from Van Dyck, Botticelli and Canaletto on display.

For history buffs, there’s also an impressive collection of works from the Byzantine era along with a revolving display of temporary exhibitions.

14. Visit the Chinati Foundation

The Chinati Foundation is another example of the minimalist and quirky art that West Texas is famous for.

Opened to the public in 1986, the Chinati Foundation is an expansive space dedicated to showcasing the remarkable talent of artists Donald Judd, Dan Flavin and John Chamberlain amongst others.

A blend of modern, minimalist art and the stark open landscapes that West Texas is known for, the Chinati Foundation draws visitors from all over the world.

The most popular time of year to visit the museum is during their annual Open House, a weekend of free viewings, art, music and gastronomy.

15. Visit Alpine

Often overlooked, the small frontier town of Alpine is much loved by locals for its low-key vibe that celebrates the authentic spirit of West Texas.

There are local restaurants offering traditional food, art galleries, street murals, live music productions and a weekly farmer’s market.

The town is located in the foothills of the Davis Mountains and surrounded by the stunning scenery that gives the town its picturesque name.

16. Get up close with the Bison and Longhorn Herd

One of the most fun activities to do in West Texas is visit the San Angelo State Park where you can get up close with the official Texas state Bison Herd and Longhorn Herd.

17. Visit the world’s largest natural spring-fed pool at Balmorhea State Park

20. Visit the Starlight Theater

In the quirky ghost town of Terlingua , the Starlight Theater is often considered the heart of this once bustling mining down.

Now the town’s population is around sixty permanent residents, although visitors often stop in to the Starlight Theater to sample the local cuisine, have a beer and enjoy the live music that is performed by both local and visiting artists.

21. Visit the The Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center & Botanical Gardens

One of the best kept secrets in West Texas is the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center and Botanical Gardens .

25. Stand in awe at the Silent Wings Museum

While the Silent Wings Museum is also great for adults, this World War II museum featuring the military gliders is also fantastic for kids.

Housed in what used to be the Lubbock airport, this museum has models of the gliders and life-size military history replicas which will leave any child in awe.

It’s not a boring museum with a bunch of long plaques to read with glass cases, but a truly immersive experience that allows you to see the gliders hung from the ceilings towering above you as well as get up close and personal to other World War II artifacts on display.

This would be best for elementary aged and teenaged children in Lubbock.

26. Dyess Linear Air Park

If you grew up watching the movie “Top Gun,” a visit to the Dyess Linear Air Park will reignite your love of air and speed and just might have you feeling like a maverick!

Showcasing 34 historic aircraft, including fighter and cargo planes, this air park is the largest of its kind in the United States Air Force.

Enhance your experience with a knowledgeable tour guide who can fill you in on the history of the aircraft and bring their stories as well as interesting facts about Texas to life!

Located on the Dyess Air Force Base, you can browse the Dyess Memorial Center before or after your tour and learn about the history of the base and the life of Lt. Col. Dyess.

All the Best Things to Do in West Texas Road Trip Guide

It only took a few hours of driving with no radio for our group to bond over inappropriate jokes. In the midst of one our laughing fits, we saw a blur of a building, when we yelled “PRADA!” in unison.

We spent five days exploring the best things to do in West Texas. It was enough to touch on the hot spots, but like most of our trips, it helped us feel out what we want to do when we revisit. Since we love our parks, we were most excited to explore Big Bend National Park. What we didn’t know was how much we would fall in love with the other areas of West Texas.

All the Best Stops on the Ultimate West Texas Road Trip

Whether you’re into the great outdoors, art scene, food, or history & culture, there’s something for everyone.

1. El Paso →

We started and ended our trip on the very west tip of Texas in El Paso. El Paso is located in one of the largest deserts in North America, the Chihuahuan Desert, and the city sits right along the border with its neighboring international city, Juarez. There are so many Spanish speaking folks in El Paso that you might want to brush up on your Spanish. We had one cab driver that only spoke Spanish, which made for a fun and scenic ride.

Recommended Length of Stay: 3-5 days

Fun Fact: El Paso is also known as Sun City, because it’s one of the sunniest cities in the US (and the world ) with roughly 300 sunny days a year.

Things to Eat, See, and Do in El Paso

• El Paso Museum of Art – This is a free museum that carries a collection from the surrounding area featuring artists from both El Paso and Juarez. They have special exhibitions and a permanent collection.
• Hueco Tanks State Park – Located about 45 minutes outside of El Paso is a giant playground for climbers. Even if you don’t climb, it’s a unique and beautiful landscape to hike through.
• Scenic Drive Overlook has a great view over both El Paso and Ciudad Juarez.

2. Fort Davis

Fort Davis is set amongst the Davis Mountains, which is a sky island. The term refers to the fact that it’s an isolated mountain range surrounded by desert. With the highest elevation above sea level and cooler weather in Texas, it’s a favorite getaway amongst locals.

Recommended Length of Stay: 2-3 days

Local Tip: According to Tyler Priest, the local Texas Parks and Wildlife ranger, the hills and mountains are so green and lush that the landscape looks like Ireland during the rainy months.

Things to Eat, See, and Do in Fort Davis

• Davis Mountains State Park – Don’t miss the views from Skyline Drive. There are a few spots to check out – the peak is ideal for sunset and the end of the road is a great spot for sunrise.
• McDonald Observatory – Gaze up at the stars from one of the darkest skies in the US. They have daily tours and hold Star Parties too.
• Fort Davis National Historic Site – One of the best surviving examples of an Indian Wars’ frontier military post. Keep an eye out for the resident horses and goat that freely roam in the area.
• Davis Mountain Scenic Loop – This 75-mile drive takes you through some of the best scenery in west Texas. It takes roughly two hours.
• Fort Davis Drug Store & Hotel – serves food, drinks, and sells small supplies.
• Stone Village Market – A local market frequented by the residents and tourists. They also serve sandwiches made to order.
• Herbert’s Caboose Ice Cream Shop – An ice cream shop built into an old caboose.

Where to Stay: Indian Lodge – This picturesque hotel is tucked right into the mountains of Davis Mountains State Park. The white buildings beautifully contrast against the backdrop. 3. Big Bend

Big Bend is made up of small communities, like Terlingua Ghost Town, Lajitas, and Study Butte, and is known for Big Bend National Park and State Park. It’s named after the huge curve/bend in the Rio Grande and sits at the southern border of the state.

Local Tip: Have plenty of snacks and supplies ready if you plan on staying out late. Most stores and restaurants close really early. I’m used to having dinner at 8-9 pm some nights, but if you want to eat, you need to try to get in before 7.

Things to Eat, See, and Do in Big Bend

• Grapevine Hills Trail / Balanced Rock – This 2.2 mi round trip hike takes you to our favorite landscape in the park. There’s 6 miles of dirt road to the trailhead, and we were able to take a huge van and small sedan but had to take it slow. Also, watch out for the rainbow colored greater earless lizards on the trail.
• Langford Hot Springs – A short 0.5 mile round trip hike takes you to a historic hot springs located at the Rio Grande.
• Santa Elena Canyon – See one of the most iconic spots in the park. You can even get a backcountry use permit to paddle upstream and back.
• Chisos Basin Loop – Gives you a great mini-tour of the Chisos Mountains. Do the loop counter-clockwise to get the best views.
• Big Bend Ranch State Park – The rugged volcanic landscape sits just west of Big Bend National Park.
• Terlingua Ghost Town – Home to the world’s first Chili Cook Off, and they still hold the event every year. You can explore a historic church, a beautiful cemetery, and meet the locals (and ghosts) that frequent the area.
• Stand Up Paddle Boarding at the Lajitas Golf Resort – This resort has an 18-hole golf course and 4-star hotel, but it’s also where the local guides can take you SUPing along the Rio Grande.
• Starlight Theatre Restaurant & Saloon – One of the liveliest spots in town, they have live music and a wide selection of food. Get yourself a marg and thank me later.
• Taqueria el Milagro – We stumbled across this spot when everything else was closed. They graciously stayed open later for us and had AMAZING tacos.
• Expresso Y Poco Mas – Local coffee and breakfast spot.
• La Kiva Restaurant & Bar – We were supposed to eat here, but they closed early.

Where to Stay: Perry Mansion. We all got extremely excited when we pulled up to Perry Mansion. It just reopened after a renovation and only has 7 rooms. Great for a big group if you want the place all to yourself. Click to see best prices for hotels .

We didn’t know much about Marfa besides the Prada art installation, which we learned isn’t actually in the town of Marfa. When we heard it was an artsy community we pictured desert art, like Salvation Mountain , but instead we found a slice of NYC in West Texas.

We recommend visiting between Thursday to Sunday for the best experience. A lot of restaurants and attractions have limited hours, and some of them only open over the weekend. It’s always good to double check hours while you’re planning your trip but keep in mind that some spots still can close when they decide to.

Note: Most people know about the Prada Marfa art installation, but did you know there is also a tiny Target? It’s actually 45 minutes away just past the neighboring town of Alpine.

Things to Eat, See, and Do in Marfa

• Ballroom Marfa  – Their current show features contemporary artists we first saw at MoMa PS1 in NYC.
• Presidio County Courthouse & The Central Fire Station – Beautiful and picturesque buildings right next to each other.
• Chinati Foundation – We didn’t make it here on this trip, but you can see amazing contemporary art pieces here. From what we can gather from photos, it looks like a combination of Noguchi Museum and Storm King.
• The Marfa Lights – At night you can spot mysterious lights that dance in the darkness south of US 90 between Alpine & Marfa. No one knows what they really are, and there are plenty of theories out there. Ask the locals to see what you can find out.
• Prada Marfa – This is the most popular photo of Marfa on Instagram. This art installation is about 30 minutes from the city.
• Pizza Foundation – Yummy pizza with indoor and outdoor seating. It gets busy on the weekends so call in early to put your order in.
• Planet Marfa – Amazing local bar with a teepee and school bus on the property. Great place to meet locals and end the night.

Essential Tips

• Once you drive out to the smaller towns and regions, keep in mind that restaurants and shops close early and don’t necessarily keep their hours. If you plan on being out after sunset shooting, have a plan for your meals.
• West Texas varies in temperatures since the elevation changes so much. During our May trip, we saw highs in the 90s and lows in the 40-50s, so always pack layers.
• Regardless of where you are, you’ll be doing some walking so bring comfortable walking shoes. Here are our suggestions for best sandals for travel .
• Water & sunscreen are a must. Sunglasses and a hat help too.
• Outside of El Paso, WIFI and cell service are limited. Even places that have wifi are really spotty. Prepare to unplug.

In addition to its German heritage, Fredericksburg is also known for its wine industry.

South Padre Island

For activities, you can take a trip over to Port Aransas beach for swimming or surfing.

Be sure to visit the Leonabelle Turn Bull center for a birding tour along a boardwalk in the Texas wetlands or do some camping in Mustang Island State Park. 

For good seafood in the area try Fin’s Grill and Icehouse to sample the catch of the day.

One of our favorite charming small towns in Texas!

It is located within the city limits of New Braunfels, Texas about an hour south of Austin. 

Founded in 1845 by German immigrants, Gruene was once a thriving cotton-producing community.

It flourished with a cotton gin, Gruene general store, and a gristmill – all of which are on the National Register of Historic Places today!

Gruene (pronounced like “Green”) has preserved its rich history and unique culture in the Gruene Historic District.

Visitors can step back in time as they stroll down Main Street, lined with Victorian-style buildings housing antique shops, boutiques, and ice cream parlors.

Gruene is also home to the oldest dance hall in Texas, where visitors can enjoy live country music by popular artists.

The Gristmill Restaurant, located in the town’s original cotton gin, is another must visit attraction.

Spend some time on the Guadalupe River or Comal River for some fun rafting, fishing, or river tubing while you are visiting Gruene.

Jefferson, Texas is a small town with a lot of character.

Founded in 1836, it was one of the earliest towns in Texas and served as the capital of the Republic of Texas for a brief period of time.

Today, Jefferson is known for its historic downtown, which is full of quaint shops and restaurants, oodles of small town charm, as well as excellently preserved Victorian architecture.

Visitors can explore the historic buildings – many of which are on the National Register of Historic places, shop for antiques, and enjoy a meal at one of the many restaurants.

This old brewery town is a great place to visit if you’re a fan of local beers and wines.

Shiner, also the name of a popular beer produced in the area, is about an hour and a half from both Austin and San Antonio. 

One of the best places to stay in the town is a bed and breakfast called Spoetzl Haus.

This lovely little residence has dark hardwood floors and a complimentary breakfast with every stay.

It’s also decorated with little pieces of Shiner’s history, so you can ask your host for interesting tidbits about the town. 

Other popular locations in Shiner are Spoetzl Brewery, ​Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, and Edward Wolter’s Memorial Museum and Licorice and Lemon Drop’s old fashioned candy shop. ​

The town is full of character and is definitely fun for a couple of day’s trip.

Laredo is a beautiful Spanish-villa style town that was built 258 years ago. 

The small texas town is on the Mile 1 marker of Interstate Highway 35 and about 2 and a half hours from Corpus Christi.

Beyond exploring the unique location and eating some awesome tex-mex, there are several other activities available in Laredo. 

Visit the Republic of the Rio Grande Museum to see an authentic Laredo home for the 1830s.

Go to the reservoir in Lake Casa Blanca State Park, hike the trail along Zacate Creek (a famous battle site during the Civil War), or even learn something about space in the Lamar Bruni Vergara Planetarium. 

With countless other activities, there is a ton to do in this border town. 

Boerne, Texas is a nature lover’s paradise. 

The town’s Main Street shopping district is called the Hill Country Mile.

It is full of quaint boutiques, antique shops, art galleries, and delicious restaurants.

The Guadalupe River runs through the center of Boerne and is perfect for swimming, fishing, canoeing, and tubing. 

There are also several riverfront parks where you can picnic or take a leisurely stroll.

The Cave without a Name is one of Boerne’s most popular attractions.

A town in northeastern Texas with a ton of small-town flavor.

West has some of the prettiest prairies, mountains, and rock formations in the whole state right on its doorstep. 

The town is a little under 2 hours north of Austin and just north of Waco .

Book a room at the Holiday Inn or the Bed and Breakfast on Whitecreek rock, and stay for a couple of days to enjoy great open Texas outdoors.

The tiny town is actually located inside of the Palo Duro Canyon , which is nicknamed the Grand Canyon of Texas because it is the second-largest Canyon in the U.S. 

Nearby, you can go camping or enjoy the hiking trails in Palo Duro Canyon State Park.

Or, you can go downtown to do some shopping, take a gander and a few historic buildings, and see the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum.

Welcome to the Cowboy Capital of the World.

Historically, the town was the site of several bloody battles between the Apache and the Comanche Indian tribes and gained relevance as a cypress logging community in the mid-1800s. 

Located only one hour from San Antonio, Bandera is close to two state natural areas and has great trails for hiking, bicycling, or even horseback riding. 

When you come in from a rough day on the saddle take a trip over to the local museum, check the event calendar for some live music, or lay your head down to rest at the River Oak Inn. 

On the western edge of Texas, this small town’s isolation will give you a brightly lit image of the night’s sky.

The nearest big city is El Paso and that is more than 3 hours away.

Alpine is also very close to the Mexican border and is popular for its proximity to Big Bend National Park.

This desert town is a great place to visit if you like peace and quiet and spending time outside.

Take a walk along Hancock Hill Trails where you can see “the desk” a metal desk dragged out into the wilderness by college students so they could have a scenic place to study. 

North of Alpine is the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center, also a great place to go for a stroll and learn about the local desert critters.

There are multiple museums in the town that speak to both Texas and frontier history including Gonzales Memorial Museum, Living History Farm, Pioneer Village, and Gonzales County Jail Museum. 

The town is also close to Palmetto State Park where you can enjoy some outdoor activities and is home to many restaurants like the Gonzales Food Market, Baker Boys BBQ, and Cow Palace. 

Port Isabel

Love coastal towns? Port Isabel is a small town located on the Gulf of Mexico in southeastern Texas.

The town is home to a number of historic sites, including the Historic Port Isabel lighthouse and the Port Isabel Museum.

The town is also a popular destination for fishing and birdwatching.

Visitors to Port Isabel can enjoy a number of activities, including swimming, kayaking, and windsurfing.

The town is also home to a number of restaurants and cafes, as well as shops selling souvenirs and local arts and crafts.

Fort Stockton

Talk about remote, this West Texas town is over three hours from the nearest major city of El Paso .

This town used to be a popular stop for cowboys and other old west folks and today serves as a pleasant reminder to a time once forgotten. 

Take a walk through Fort Stockton’s historic district to see Pecos County Courthouse, the “Old Jail” from 1884, and the “Oldest House” believed to be built in 1855.

The town is also home to an Authentic old west saloon: Grey Mule Saloon.

This is a great place to unbuckle your spurs and have a whiskey or root beer. 

You’ll probably be tired from all the driving so lay your head down to rest at the La Quinta Inn, it is very central within the town.

Terlingua, Texas is a unique ghost town located in the Chihuahuan Desert.

Founded in the 1880s as a mining town, Terlingua later became known for its position on the Rio Grande and its proximity to Big Bend National Park.

Terlingua Ghost Town was once home to more than 2,000 people.

However, the miners left in the early 20th century, and the town was largely abandoned.

Visitors can explore the abandoned mines, visit the old cemetery, or take a hike through the surrounding desert.

This is actually one of the bigger towns on our list, with a population of 12,000.

However, that does not subtract from its warm and quaint atmosphere. 

At just 30 minutes outside of Austin, it is a must-visit for anyone who is curious about the smaller towns within the state… and has a taste for BBQ.

Lockhart has been dubbed the “BBQ Capital of Texas,” and rightfully so. 

Their potent trio of BBQ restaurants (Black’s, Smitty’s, and Kreuz) have been highly awarded and BBQ lovers make the pilgrimage to Lockhart annually to have another taste of their delicious meats. 

Beyond the food, the town also has a lot of beautiful, colonial-style buildings like their courthouse and county jail museum in the town square.

Want to see a town with an extremely small population?

Take a trip over to Uncertain in East Texas.

In the 2010 census, it was recorded to have a population of just 94, down from 150 in 2000. In 2018 it was believed to have only 59 people. 

While it may not be the best town for clubbing, there is still plenty of fun to be had in Uncertain.

It is located in the northeastern corner of the state, almost three hours from Dallas. 

The town is located right on the banks of Caddo Lake.

The gnarled and enormous cypresses of the lake/swamp form beautiful scenery for walks around the town and the surrounding area.

It also has a number of water activities like boat tours and lakeside hiking/walking trails for you to choose from. 

If you want to really spice up your accommodation, try renting a cabin with Moonglow Lodges, they will set you up in a fully wooden hut situated on stilts in the lake.

Uncertain makes the perfect base to explore Caddo Lake State Park .

Granbury was voted the “Best Historic Small Town in America,” – primarily because of its Historic Downtown Square!

The buildings that line the square date back to the late 19th century, and the original brick paving stones are still in place.

The courthouse, which anchors the historic town square, was built in 1893 and is still in use today.

The town has a rich culture and deep southern hospitality that will make your heart warm.

Go to the Acton Nature center for a look at some wildlife and flora, then head over to the Granbury historic Railroad Depot to learn about the iron horses of the old west. 

Spend some time on the banks of Lake Granbury.

It is about an hour and 15 minutes from Dallas and only 48 minutes from Fort Worth. 

Nacogdoches

Founded in 1716, Nacogdoches is the oldest town in Texas and has a rich history.

The streets are lined with beautiful old buildings, and the residents are friendly and welcoming.

There is a lot to do in Nacogdoches, from shopping and dining to visiting museums and exploring the great outdoors.

Downtown Nacogdoches is full of unique shops and restaurants, and the city hosts several festivals throughout the year.

It is undoubtedly one of the most charming small towns in Texas!

Marble Falls

Nestled in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, Marble Falls is a charming small town with a big personality.

From its scenic location on the shores of Lake Marble Falls to its rich history and vibrant arts community, there is much to love about this special place.

Visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, and swimming, or explore the many shops and galleries downtown.

Take a peek at some of the German cultures hiding in Southeastern Texas.

Schulenberg is also very easy to reach as it is in between and almost equidistant from Houston, San Antonio, and Austin, no more than an hour and thirty minutes from each. 

You won’t want to miss the painted churches, Model Airplane Museum, and homemade German sausage and schnitzel.

Saint Mary’s Catholic Church is known as the Queen of Painted Churches, but St. John the Baptist Church and Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church are close seconds. 

The Stanzel Model Aircraft Museum is owned by the Stanzel Family; model aircraft royalty who was inducted into the Model Aircraft hall of fame.

Finally, for some great German cuisine try to visit the City Meat Market or Mama’s at Sengelmann Hall for some of the best Schnitzel and Sausage dollars can buy. 

Come here to see some gorgeous open vistas in the Davis Mountains.

People have compared the scenery here to New Mexico, Chihuahua, and even Australia due to the intricate rock formations and wide-open spaces. 

Like most of West Texas, the biggest city nearby is El Paso at about three hours away.

While you’re here trying to do some bird watching, West Texas has 17 of the 18 species of hummingbird native to the state. 

You can also do a trip hiking or camping in the Davis Mountains, or cycle through them on a ride through the “Scenic Loop.”

The town also has glider flying, the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center and Botanical Gardens, and Fort Davis National Historic Site. 

Johnson City

Johnson City is a city in the Hill Country region of Texas about an hour away from Austin.

It is the county seat of Blanco County and is located on the Pedernales River.

This town is named after the 36th president of the United States: Lyndon B. Johnson.

Johnson City is known for its quaint downtown area, which features a variety of shops and restaurants.

The city is also home to the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historic Site.

Visitors to the park can tour the Johnson family home, as well as see exhibits on LBJ’s childhood, his time in Congress, and his presidency.

The LBJ Ranch is the most popular site in the park. It served as Texas white house for President Johnson.

This primarily historic town has several buildings from the late 1800s. It is a little under three hours from Fort Worth.

It can get hot in Texas, so after you finish with a long day of walking go and eat ice cream at the Albany Ice Company, established in 1926.

If you’re looking for somewhere to stay try stopping at the Albany Inn and RV campground, a perfect pit stop for a long road trip across Texas or the U.S. in general.

Located in one of the hilliest parts of Texas, Llano is awesome for travelers who like hiking, sightseeing, and relaxation.

This historic town was the last stop on the railroad for adventures traveling west into the wild frontier.

It is a little under two hours from San Antonio and about an hour and a half from Austin. 

If you’re planning on staying for a night or two, try and book a room at the Dabbs Railroad Hotel, a fully operational railside hotel in business since the times of the old west.

If you want to see an interesting rock formation check out the Llano uplift, where unusually shaped stones emerged when granite pushed itself to the Earth’s surface. 

Located in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, Wimberley is a charming small town with a thriving arts community.

The town is home to several art galleries, as well as the Wimberley Players, a community theater group.

There are also several excellent restaurants, cafes, and shops.

In addition to its arts and culture scene, Wimberley is also popular with outdoor enthusiasts.

The town is surrounded by hiking and biking trails, and there are several lakes and rivers nearby for swimming, fishing, and canoeing.

Another one of its most beloved attractions is the Blue Hole.

This natural swimming hole is spring-fed and consistently stays at around 68 degrees, making it a perfect spot to cool off on a hot summer day.

Rockport is a small town located on the Gulf of Mexico coast.

Lake Jackson, on the Gulf Coast, near Freeport, Texas, and 1- hour equidistant from Houston and Galveston, is a lovely small town. The Sea Center Texas, with its fish hatchery and ponds, plus a wild-life marsh outside is a wonderful attraction as are the huge aquariums and touch-tank inside the Center. The town was built by Alden Dow, founder of Dow Chemical Co. during WW II for the plant workers. There is a Historical Museum downtown with animatronics of Alden Dow, and Albert “Dutch” Beutel, one of the designers of the town, as well as the Windecker Eagle plane, a prototype using Stealth plane technology. Lake Jackson is next-door to Clute, Texas, another small town with the Center for the Arts & Sciences in the front of Brazosport Community College. The Center contains a Nature Museum, an Art Gallery, a Planetarium, a theatre-in-the-round, and a proscenium theatre, as well as being the home of the Brazosport Symphony. Lake Jackson, Clute, and 11 other small towns comprise an unincorporated community known as Brazosport, which is located within the Greater Houston Metroplex. Lake Jackson’s many parks and numerous trees have earned it many awards, and outside of the town is the relics of the sugar mill and plantation that gave the town its name, as well as the “Enchanted Oak” that symbolizes the town.

Lake Grapevine is a popular boating and fishing spot, while its surrounding trails attract hikers and bikers. Meanwhile, history buffs can engage in 19th-century heritage events at Nash Farm or ride into the past on the Grapevine Vintage Railroad. As its name suggests, Grapevine is also home to several tasting rooms along Texas' Urban Wine Trail. What's more, with some of the best water parks in Texas , an aquarium and a LEGOLAND Discovery Center, Grapevine is incredibly kid-friendly.

Located about 50 miles southeast of Houston, Galveston attracts Texans looking for a convenient place to spend some time at the beach. The island features family-friendly spots like Stewart Beach (with amenities like lifeguards, volleyball courts and a playground) and Pleasure Pier (which features an array of games and rides). Meanwhile, Schlitterbahn Waterpark offers yet another place to play. Away from the sand, visitors can explore the shop-, restaurant- and nightclub-filled Strand District, named a National Historic Landmark for its well-preserved Victorian architecture. Travelers will also want to check out other historical sights, such as Bishop's Palace and Moody Mansion.

Easy to reach by ferry from Port Aransas, this former ranch is now a prime beach destination. Because San José Island is privately owned, the island's only publicly accessible land is its 21-mile stretch of unspoiled sand situated below the vegetation line. But visitors will find plenty to do on the beach. The island's more than 600 kinds of fish and roughly 300 bird species make it a terrific place to go fishing and birding. Other popular pastimes here include shelling and surfing.

One of our favorite aspects of running a Texas travel blog is having a great excuse to visit new-to-us cute towns on a regular basis.

We’ve rounded up the most charming small towns in Texas here!

Fredericksburg.

Undoubtedly one of the best-known small towns in Texas, popular Fredericksburg is known for two things: its German heritage and its many, many wineries .

While you’re there, consider making the short drive to Enchanted Rock , too.

After all, you’ll no doubt want to stretch your legs after feasting on Texas wine and German food!

Dripping Springs

Home to the famous Hamilton Pool Preserve, plenty of wineries and distilleries, and some of Texas’ loveliest Hill Country wedding venues, Dripping Springs is a delightfully charming town–and it makes an excellent day trip from Austin!

Be sure to also check out Tillies, a beautiful restaurant housed in a former Vietnamese courthouse that was imported to Texas, charming Mercer Street with its boutiques and restaurants, the Dr. Pound Farmstead.

Jester King Brewery, where you can drink craft beer and also hang out with goats, is wildly popular for a reason.

Another must, in my opinion, is the delightful Texas Hill Country Olive Oil Co., where you can pick up local Texas olive oil (it’s delicious).

Charming Round Top is synonymous in Texas with its annual antiques fair, but it is one of the most beautiful small towns in Texas to visit year-round.

In addition to the many, many antique stores around town perfect for shopping in Round Top (don’t miss McLaren’s, complete with London-style double-decker buses out front), a visit to this tiny town should definitely include a slice of pie from Royer’s!

Also, be sure to take strolls around Henkel Square Market and Rummel Square.

A short drive away, you can also pay a quick visit to nearby St. Martin’s Catholic Church , the smallest (active) Catholic Church in the world!

Johnson City

As the hometown of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s family, today this tiny town is best known for being a short drive from the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historic Site and State Historic Site, which can be found on the former president’s beautiful (and still working) ranch.

While most of the historic site is technically a short drive away in Stonewall, the Johnson Family Homestead, where the former grandparents’ lived, is right in town.

However, it’s also very close to Pedernales Falls, so if you swing by, consider making time for visiting both the ranch and charming Pedernales Falls State Park.

Home to just 3 official residents, the positively minuscule town of Luckenbach is the tiniest of all the best small towns in Texas!

Despite its small size, Luckenbach is well-known as a country music hotspot, and is home to a popular dance hall and far more live shows than one would expect from a town of merely 3 people!

While Luckenbach doesn’t offer enough sightseeing to fill up a whole trip on its own, its proximity to other hotspots like Fredericksburg and Stonewall makes it an excellent addition to a Texas Hill Country road trip .

Tucked into a quiet corner of west Texas, Marfa has gained notoriety in recent years for how utterly unexpected it is!

Home to several works by Andy Warhol, the mysterious Marfa Lights, plenty of filming locations for historic movies, and a downtown that looks like it was designed by Wes Anderson, Marfa is incredibly entertaining to visit and one of the most unique small towns in Texas.

The famous “Prada Marfa” store is located in nearby Valentine rather than right in town, but there’s no doubt that the vibe of the art installation is pure Marfa!

This East Texas gem is known as one of the most romantic towns in Texas, thanks in large part to its outsized collection of historic bed and breakfasts to stay in!

While many visitors travel to Jefferson to reach the unique Caddo Lake State Park , downtown is also a delight.

Most Texans are incredibly familiar with Shiner, even if they’ve never considered visiting this small Texas town with a population of merely 2,000 people.

This is the home of Shiner Beer, a staple of all Texas grocery stores and dive bars!

This claim to fame means that, by far, the most popular thing to do in Shiner is touring the home of Shiner Beer, Spoetzl Brewery

However, it’s worth staying long enough to check out the cute downtown after you wrap up your time at the brewery!

With a name like Dublin, is it any surprise that Dublin, Texas is extremely proud of its Irish heritage, mostly invented or otherwise?

This small Texas town is home to plenty of nods to Ireland, but surprisingly–despite the enormous St. Patrick’s Day celebration and its numerous Irish-themed businesses–this (possible) heritage is not what the town is best known for!

Instead, Dublin is best known as the home of Dublin Bottling Works, the original bottlers of Dr. Pepper (sadly they don’t bottle the drink anymore).

There are plenty of reasons that Ennis could qualify as one of the best small towns in Texas, including its cute historic district, great Czech food, and annual Polka festival.

The absolute best reason to check out Ennis, though, comes around each April: bluebonnet season .

Home to 40 miles of what is called the Official Texas Bluebonnet Trail , there is no better place in North Texas to admire the iconic–and absolutely stunning–wildflowers each spring.

Though West is home to a cute-if-small downtown, it is primarily known for its Czech heritage and–more specifically–its kolaches.

Though the kolaches you find in West have certainly been Texas-ifed (I would never find my favorite combo, a sausage, cheese, and jalapeno klobasnek, for sale across the pond in the Czech Republic!), they are incredibly delicious.

Known as the “barbecue capital of Texas”, you’ll definitely want to be sure to arrive in Lockhart with an empty stomach and a big appetite!

Smitty’s, Kreuz, and Black’s are among the most legendary barbecue spots in the area, but Lockhart is also home to plenty of breweries, one of the most beautiful courthouses in Texas, and a big helping of small-town Texas charm.

For much of the first half of the 20th century, Terlingua was a booming mining town–but today, it is the only Texas ghost town on this list of the best small towns in Texas.

After the Chisos Mining Company went bankrupt in 1942, this small settlement between Big Bend National Park and Big Bend State Park ended up abandoned.

Georgetown is technically one of the best small Texas cities, rather than towns, but it definitely offers classic Texas small-town vibes in its core.

Once upon a time, Gruene was an independent town known for its cotton production.

Today, it is best known for Gruene Hall, a classic Texas dance hall that dates back to the 19th century and is the oldest continually operating dance hall in the Lone Star State!

Above all, Schulenburg is known for its collection of beautiful painted churches, each with a detailed interior that is a work of art in its own right.

Primarily built in the 19th century by German and Czech immigrants, these painted churches are one of Texas’ historical treasures and the biggest reason that Schulenburg is undoubtedly one of the best small towns in Texas to visit!

One shouldn’t leave Jefferson off this list, a great small town with a wonderful history. Brenham is a good choice as well. And Alpine. Just sayin.

Dublin was actually named for the Double N hotel that once stood near where the local Dairy Queen now stands. Eventually people started calling it Dublin and that’s where the Irish aspect came from. Technically no Irish history here though, although there are a few shops on the square that represent it. There are several good museums to visit here for rodeo buffs, golf enthisiasts, and Healthcare workers alike. The Dublin Dr Pepper Company is also pretty interesting, especially if you take a tour of the still running factory and museum. Lots of old Victorian homes line St Patrick Street and if you’re hungry for good food you’ve gotta stop by Granny Clark’s, one of the best hometown cafes you’ll ever eat at. Dublin is small, but it can be quite surprising if you look hard enough.

Which small town has the best employment options?

We’re all about travel and tourism here, so that’s not really our area of expertise. 🙂 Also depends heavily on your industry, of course–an agricultural town vs a university town vs a small town that is has a reasonable commute to a major city will all have wildly different options.

Medina, Texas, home of Love Creek Orchards, where the apple pies are fresh and delicious. Beautiful scenery. About 13 miles northwest of Bandera, Texas, and adjacent to the lovely Medina River.

Check out Florence! Downtown Florence is growing and their are several fun spots to check out.

Salado is definitely a must see. The cute little shops, art galleries, antiques, a brewery, vineyards and a blown glass shop where you can watch and participate while the artists create beautiful glass art.

What about small towns with family homes. I hate looking into a place to visit and it’s all businesses and 1 to 2 bedroom apt. Towns should have family homes 3 – 4 bedrooms and lots of community events like festivals, town picnics, cafe’, book stores, parades.

I would like to suggest Fort Davis. An unincorporated area in Jeff Davis County, it is @ 30 minutes to either Alpine or Marfa. Surrounded by the Davis Mountains there are approximately 1400 ppl in the whole County. Major attractions include: Fort Davis National Historic Site, Davis Mountains State Park, Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center, McDonald Observatory and The Scenic Loop Drive. The small shops include a hat maker, fudge shop, wood carvings, museum and local artisans. There is a historic downtown walking or driving tour and annual events like their Coolest July 4th celebration.

A lot of towns on this list are not small. Eastland, with ol’ Rip and the walking art exhibit is a great choice.

Total solar eclipse April 8, 2024 facts: Path, time and the best places to view

In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality.

"Eclipse Across America," will air live Monday, April 8, beginning at 2 p.m. ET on ABC, ABC News Live, National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo WILD, Disney+ and Hulu as well as network social media platforms.

On April 8, 2024, a historic total solar eclipse will cast a shadow over parts of the United States, prompting a mass travel event to the path of totality -- from Texas to Maine and several states and cities in between.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth and, for a short time, completely blocks the face of the sun, according to NASA .

The track of the moon's shadow across Earth's surface is called the path of totality, and to witness the April 8 total solar eclipse, viewers must be within the 115-mile-wide path. To discover when to see the solar eclipse in totality or the partial eclipse in locations across the U.S. outside of the path, check out NASA's Eclipse Explorer tool .

In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality, bringing the celestial phenomenon to their doorsteps, Michael Zeiler, expert solar eclipse cartographer at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told ABC News.

But for individuals outside of the path, investing time and money are needed to experience the event in totality.

Eclipse chasers, or umbraphiles, are individuals who will do almost anything, and travel almost anywhere, to see totality, according to the American Astronomical Society .

"There's a very active community of solar eclipse chasers and we will go to any reasonable lengths to see solar eclipses anywhere in the world," Zeiler said. "All of us are united in pursuing the unimaginable beauty of a total solar eclipse."

Bringing together both eclipse experts and novice sky watchers, the total solar eclipse on April 8 is projected to be the U.S.'s largest mass travel event in 2024, according to Zeiler, who likened it to "50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation."

"When you look at the number of people expected to come to the path of totality for the solar eclipse, we estimate those numbers are roughly the equivalent of 50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation, from Texas to Maine," he said.

In the U.S., the path of totality begins in Texas and will travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse, according to NASA.

A total solar eclipse  crossed North America Monday with parts of 15 U.S. states within the path of totality. Maps show  where and when astronomy fans could see the big event  as skies darkened in the middle of the day Monday, April 8.

The total eclipse first appeared along Mexico's Pacific Coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT, then traveled across a swath of the U.S., from Texas to Maine, and into Canada.

About 31.6 million people live in the path of totality , the area where the moon fully blocked out the sun , according to NASA. The path ranged between 108 and 122 miles wide. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path of totality.

Solar eclipse path of totality map for 2024

The total solar eclipse started over the Pacific Ocean, and the first location in continental North America that experienced totality was Mexico's Pacific Coast, around 11:07 a.m. PDT, according to NASA. From there, the path continued into Texas, crossing more than a dozen states before the eclipse enters Canada in southern Ontario. The eclipse exited continental North America at around 5:16 p.m. NDT from Newfoundland, Canada.

The path of totality included portions of the following states:

• Pennsylvania
• New Hampshire

Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan also experienced the total solar eclipse.

Several major cities across the U.S. were included in the eclipse's path of totality, while many others saw a partial eclipse. These were some of the best major cities for eclipse viewing — though the weather was a factor :

• San Antonio, Texas (partially under the path)
• Austin, Texas
• Waco, Texas
• Dallas, Texas
• Little Rock, Arkansas
• Indianapolis, Indiana
• Dayton, Ohio
• Cleveland, Ohio
• Buffalo, New York
• Rochester, New York
• Syracuse, New York
• Burlington, Vermont

The eclipse began in the U.S. as a partial eclipse beginning at 12:06 p.m. CDT near Eagle Pass, Texas, before progressing to totality by about 1:27 p.m. CDT and then moving along its path to the northeast over the following few hours.

NASA shared times for several cities in the path of totality across the U.S. People could have also  checked their ZIP code on NASA's map  to see when the eclipse was to reach them if they were on, or near, the path of totality — or if they saw a partial eclipse instead.

How much of the eclipse did people see if they live outside the totality path?

While the April 8 eclipse covered a wide swath of the U.S., outside the path of totality observers may have spotted a partial eclipse, where the moon covers some, but not all, of the sun, according to NASA. The closer they were to the path of totality, the larger the portion of the sun that was hidden.

NASA allowed viewers to input a ZIP code and see how much of the sun was to be covered in their locations.

Could there be cloud cover be during the solar eclipse?

Some areas along the path of totality had a higher likelihood of cloud cover that could interfere with viewing the eclipse. Here is a map showing the historical trends in cloud cover this time of year.

Where did the solar eclipse reach totality for the longest?

Eclipse viewers near Torreón, Mexico, got to experience totality for the longest. Totality there lasted 4 minutes, 28 seconds, according to NASA. 

Most places along the centerline of the path of totality saw a totality duration of between 3.5 and 4 minutes, according to NASA. Some places in the U.S. came close to the maximum; Kerrville, Texas, had a totality duration of 4 minutes, 24 seconds.

What is the path of totality for the 2044 solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse that will be visible from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

Astronomy fans in the U.S. will have far fewer opportunities to see the 2044 eclipse they had on April 8. NASA has not yet made maps available for the 2044 eclipse but, according to The Planetary Society , the path of totality will only touch three states.

The 2024 eclipse will start in Greenland, pass over Canada and end as the sun sets in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota, according to the Planetary Society.

On Monday, a solar eclipse will cross from Texas to Maine, putting over 30 million people in the path of totality , with a partial eclipse visible briefly for millions more.

Monday's weather forecast for the path of totality

Totality in the U.S. starts around 1:30 p.m. CT/2:30 ET and continues until 2:30 p.m. CT/3:30 p.m. ET, lasting for a few minutes in each location.

When is the next total solar eclipse in the US after 2024 and what is its path? What to know

The highly anticipated 2024 total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday , giving millions of sky-gazers the chance to see a rare cosmic event that won't be viewable again for 20 years.

The eclipse's  path of totality  will travel over a portion of northern Mexico before entering the U.S. It then it will cross 13 states  from Texas to Maine, where the spectacle is expected to attract huge crowds.

If you aren't lucky enough to be in the path of totality this time around, you will have another chance - you'll just have to wait until the 2040s.

When is the next total solar eclipse visible from the U.S.?

It will be 20 years before there's a chance to  witness a total solar eclipse  in the United States again.

According to NASA, after Monday's total solar  eclipse , the next one viewable from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

2044 total solar eclipse path of totality

Unfortunately, the 2044 total  solar eclipse  won't have the broad reach across the U.S. as the 2024 eclipse.

The path of totality during the 2044 eclipse will only touch three states, according to the Planetary Society, a nonprofit involved in research, public outreach, and political space advocacy.

The eclipse will begin in Greenland, sweep through Canada and end around sunset in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.

2045 solar eclipse

While the 2044 total eclipse will only touch three states, a 2045 eclipse will have a more robust path across the U.S.

Expected to occur on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2045, this solar eclipse will trace a path of totality over California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.

A partial solar eclipse will also be viewable in 35 other states, according to National Eclipse.com

What is a total solar eclipse?

Any celestial object like a moon or a planet that passes between two other bodies can create  an eclipse  by obscuring the view of objects like the sun.

In the event of a solar eclipse, the moon comes in between the Earth and the sun, blocking its light from reaching a small part of our planet. Partial eclipses, when some part of the sun remains visible, are the most common, making total eclipses a rare sight to behold.

Total eclipses can lead to a period of darkness lasting for several minutes, during which time nocturnal animals stir while confused birds and insects may fall silent, NASA says.

When a solar eclipse reaches totality, people are able to see the sun’s outer atmosphere called the corona, which is usually obscured by the sun's bright surface. This offers scientists an uncommon opportunity  to study the corona .

Totality also offers spectators a chance to gaze upon the spectacular sight with the naked eye, though  proper  safety  glasses  are still required for the rest of the time.

What states are on the 2024 eclipse path of totality?

Mexico's Pacific coast will be the first location in continental North America to experience totality, which is expected to occur at about 11:07 a.m. PDT,  according to NASA .

As the moon's shadow will northeast, totality in the U.S. will begin in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT. The path will then cut diagonally across the country, traveling through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont and New Hampshire.

The eclipse's path is expected to end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT before visiting the maritime provinces of Canada, according to estimates.

When and where the solar eclipse will be crossing the U.S.

A total solar eclipse will grace the skies over North America on Monday, one of the most hotly anticipated sky-watching events in recent years.

Weather permitting , millions of people in Mexico, 15 U.S. states and eastern Canada will have the chance to see the moon slip between Earth and sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s light .

The total solar eclipse will be visible along a “path of totality” that measures more than 100 miles wide and extends across the continent. Along that path, the moon will fully obscure the sun, causing afternoon skies to darken for a few minutes.

In all other parts of the continental U.S., a partial solar eclipse will be visible, with the moon appearing to take a bite out of the sun. Exactly how big a bite depends on the location.

The first spot in North America that will experience totality on Monday is on Mexico’s Pacific coast at around 11:07 a.m. PT, according to NASA .

After moving northeast across Mexico, the eclipse’s path travels through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Slivers of Michigan and Tennessee will also be able to witness totality if conditions are clear.

In Canada, the eclipse will be visible in parts of southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton, at the eastern end of Nova Scotia.

The timing of the eclipse and the duration of totality varies by location. Most places will experience around 2 minutes of darkness, but the longest periods of totality are typically in the center of the eclipse’s path.

This year, the longest stretch of totality will last 4 minutes and 28 seconds in an area northwest of Torreón, Mexico.

• Idabel, Oklahoma: Partial eclipse begins at 12:28 p.m. CT and totality at 1:45 p.m. CT.
• Little Rock, Arkansas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:33 p.m. CT and totality at 1:51 p.m. CT.
• Poplar Bluff, Missouri: Partial eclipse begins at 12:39 p.m. CT and totality at 1:56 p.m. CT.
• Paducah, Kentucky: Partial eclipse begins at 12:42 p.m. CT and totality at 2:00 p.m. CT.
• Carbondale, Illinois: Partial eclipse begins at 12:42 p.m. CT and totality at 1:59 p.m. CT.
• Evansville, Indiana: Partial eclipse begins at 12:45 p.m. CT and totality at 2:02 p.m. CT.
• Cleveland: Partial eclipse begins at 1:59 p.m. ET and totality at 3:13 p.m.
• Erie, Pennsylvania: Partial eclipse begins at 2:02 p.m. ET and totality at 3:16 p.m. ET.
• Buffalo, New York: Partial eclipse begins at 2:04 p.m. ET and totality at 3:18 p.m.
• Burlington, Vermont: Partial eclipse begins at 2:14 p.m. ET and totality at 3:26 p.m. ET.
• Lancaster, New Hampshire: Partial eclipse begins at 2:16 p.m. ET and totality at 3:27 p.m.
• Caribou, Maine: Partial eclipse begins at 2:22 p.m. ET and totality at 3:32 p.m. ET.

If you plan to watch the celestial event, remember that it’s never safe to look directly at the sun, including through binoculars, telescopes or camera lenses. Special eclipse glasses are required to safely view solar eclipses and prevent permanent eye damage.
