Review which says "Love love loved this! Easily one of our top favorites while visiting Rome. We loved that we had our own personal driver. (YES PLEASE) Our tour guide was hilarious and knew lots about the city. We were able to see parts of Rome that were not on our map but are so glad they ended up there! Highly recommend!"

When taking a tour, no matter what it is or where it is, I always like to go with a tour which has lots of reviews. It shows me that it’s a well thought-of tour, as people wouldn’t keep taking it if it was bad. And Vespa Sidecar Tour with Gelato & Roman Gems has more than passed the test of time!

The tour has multiple time options throughout the day but for me, the nighttime one is the best. They also have the tour available in Spanish as well as English.

There is nothing more magical than experiencing Rome at night on a vintage Vespa , it’s one of my favourite memories from when I visited Rome. A Vespa tour is truly a must-do experience, whether it is your first time in Rome or if you’ve been there dozens of times.

I’m planning to go back to Rome and you can bet that a Vespa tour will be a part of my itinerary once again.

By taking the Vespa Sidecar Tour with Gelato & Roman Gems , you’ll get to enjoy a Vespa ride through the eternal city at night, just as the sun is setting and the landmarks begin to light up the night sky. And trust me, if you think Rome is beautiful during the day, just wait until you see it at night.

Throughout the tour, you’ll make stops at all of the iconic Roman landmarks, such as the Colosseum, the Mouth of the Truth, Circus Maximus, Palatine Hill, Saint Peter’s Square, and the Trevi Fountain.

Along the way, your guide will tell you interesting stories about Rome. My guide was called Roberto and he was very entertaining.

And would you really be in Rome if you didn’t also have a chance to enjoy some delicious coffee and gelato which are both included in the tour?

A close second is the Highlights Vespa Sidecar Tour with Coffee and Gelato . It’s the best option on GetYourGuide if you prefer to book your tours there rather than Viator. Personally, I think both sites are equally good for their tours.

vespa guided tour rome

Highlights Vespa Sidecar Tour with Coffee and Gelato is also highly rated with a score of 4.9/5 after more than 400 reviews. It’s safe to say the standard of Vespa tours in Rome is pretty high!

And it’s clear to see why- one of the best ways to explore Rome is to do it how the locals do, by riding a classic Vespa through the city.

On this tour, you’ll get to ride in the sidecar of the Vespa and enjoy the scenic city views as your local guide drives you around to the best highlights and hidden gems of Rome.

One thing that is unique about this Vespa tour is that you’ll get to explore some of the hidden gems in Rome , such as the Pyramid of Caius Cestius which is an ancient pyramid from Roman times. Chances are, you would never have visited if it wasn’t for this tour.

Other highlights include visiting the Giardino degli Aranci for panoramic views and stopping in the charming Trastevere neighbourhood. Side note: Trastevere is the best place for eating in Rome. I recommend Tonnarello which is a delicious restaurant.

Of course, you will also visit some of the most famous places in Rome , like the infamous Colosseum and the Circus Maximus. And as the name suggests, you’ll try some delicious gelato and coffee along the way.

Taking this Vespa tour is an incredible way to experience Rome. Riding in the sidecar is simultaneously exciting and relaxing , and it allows you to see so much in a short time. And to be honest, from my experience in Rome, I’m not sure I’d like to try driving in those streets – the drivers are nuts!

Highlights Vespa Sidecar Tour with Coffee and Gelato is a great choice for adults, but also for families as the sidecar allows kids over the age of 5 to safely ride in a Vespa. And if nothing else, kids love ice cream, right? (and grown-ups too, of course)

For those of you who want to drive the Vespa for yourself, Rome: Self-Driven Sightseeing Tour by Vespa is the best tour for you!

vespa guided tour rome

If you want to drive a Vespa in Rome, this tour is a great choice. Rome: Self-Driven Sightseeing Tour by Vespa allows you to drive a Vespa by yourself, but you will also have a local tour guide that you will follow along so that you don’t need to worry about directions.

Driving a Vespa yourself is an exhilarating and fun experience. You will need to have a driver’s license and experience on a Vespa or motorcycle to drive, but as long as you meet those requirements then you are sure to have a fantastic time.

Important Note: If you aren’t from Europe, you will be required to have an International Driving License which you need to get from your home country.

But just a heads up, the drivers in Rome are absolutely mental. It’s the only city I’ve been to in Europe which compares to cities in the Middle East and Asia for reckless driving. But if you’re up for the challenge, this is the best self-driving Vespa tour in Rome.

If you are travelling as a couple or small group, then you’ll have two people per Vespa. This is great if one person wants to drive and another person wants to just relax and enjoy the Vespa ride.

Another great aspect of this tour is that you’ll have a private guide , so the itinerary can be customized based on your interests. That means you don’t have to spend time at places you may have seen before and can instead focus on what interests you.

All in all, Rome: Self-Driven Sightseeing Tour by Vespa is the perfect tour for driving the Vespa yourself rather than having a driver.

5. Best of Rome Vespa Tour with Francesco

It’s not often I see the name of the tour have the guide’s name in it, but I can say with certainty that Best of Rome Vespa Tour with Francesco is definitely deserving of it. Francesco is one of the best guides I have ever had!

Review which says "We had a blast renting a scooter!! Our guide was super fun and very experienced with the area. We own scooters so we knew how to drive one already, which made it easier. We would highly recommend renting with this guy and making this a part of your experience!!!"

Best of Rome Vespa Tour with Francesco is another tour option where you can drive the Vespa yourself.

If you don’t want to drive the Vespa yourself, or you don’t have the license, it is still possible, but it costs an extra €50 per person (in cash on arrival).

Note that there is a €500 credit card deposit when you rent the bike for yourself. But don’t worry, it’s returned after the tour (unless you crash or cause damage to the bike, of course).

Riding a Vespa around Rome will make you feel like a Roman and give you an authentic experience of the city. Plus, taking a tour like this will save you hours of walking and make sure you get to maximize a short time in Rome.

There is a local guide on this tour that you will follow, so you won’t need to worry about directions. However, since you will be driving a Vespa, you will need previous experience on a scooter or motorcycle. You will also need a European national driver’s license for category A or B. Just like the last tour, for those who aren’t from Europe, an international driver’s permit is needed.

As long as you have those driving requirements, the Best of Rome Vespa Tour with Francesco is sure to be an exciting tour. It is the perfect way to check off driving a Vespa in Italy off your bucket list!

Review which says "Driving around Rome on the back of a Vespa was an amazing experience and so much fun. Vittorio, my driver, was friendly and shared lots of interesting information about the places we visited while also taking lots of great photos for me. It was a perfect end to my time in Rome."

On this Half-Day Tour by Vespa with Driver , experience La Dolce Vita as you cruise around the city on a classic Vespa.

This Vespa tour includes it all, from riding past Vatican City to seeing the top historical sites of ancient Rome, and everything in between.

Vespa Tour at Day/Night offers both morning and evening options, which is a great way to avoid heavy traffic in the evening or avoid the midday heat if you are visiting in the summer. Rome did hit record temperatures in July 2023 after all!

Instead, you can enjoy a breezy ride through the eternal city on a classic Vespa with plenty of interesting stops at Rome’s famous landmarks and historical sites.

If you have the time and money to justify it, I would definitely consider taking a tour both in the morning and in the evenings. As they are two completely different experiences – Rome is such a beautiful city day and night.

On this tour, you will have a knowledgeable guide and driver who will show you around Rome and give you plenty of local insight.

Some of the highlights of this Vespa tour include seeing the Colosseum, St. Peter’s Basilica, Trevi Fountain, and more. If you choose the daytime option, there will also be a stop for some Italian coffee and tasty gelato.

Ah, Rome: the Eternal City filled to the brim with iconic architecture, legends, stories of victory and failure, vibrant piazzas, and so much more.

Best Rome Vespa Tour Reviews

1.  vespa sidecar tour with gelato and pickup.

  • Duration:  3 hours
  • Departure: Piazza di S. Marco, 48, 00186 Roma RM
  • Departure Time: 10:00 AM & 2:00 PM
  • Includes:  Driver/guide, Use of helmet, Local Taxes, Gelato, Coffee and/or Tea

I can’t think of anything more stereotypically “Italian” than some gelato and a Vespa somehow involved. With this first tour, you’ll get plenty of both while learning about the history of this incredible city up to present day.

The Vespa Sidecar Tour with Gelato and Pickup  is one of the first tours I ever did in Rome, and is one of the best ways to get the “lay of the land” quickly so you can go back and explore those that caught your attention more.

We met up with our guide in central Rome, which was very easy to access and more convenient than having to book separate transportation.

Our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable, and also did a fantastic job of driving us around (you’ll be either behind the driver or in a sidecar) without dealing with traffic and crazy tourist crowds.

As we drove around, we told us fascinating tales about the history and culture of Rome and how certain events shaped it.

Navigating Rome in this way was thrilling, being able to see how the centuries have developed until this point, with the contrast of new and old buildings everywhere around it.

Expand To See More See Less

We of course had to make a stop at the imposing Colosseum, where we actually parked our Vespas and took a little stroll to a breathtaking vista perfect for taking some photos and videos.

After this, we got to zip away to the Baths of Caracalla, where I got insight into the history of these huge public baths, and what their role was in society.

I had no idea that Rome had a pyramid, but we were able to see the Piramide Cestia located right in the center of Rome before heading to the beautiful Aventine Hill.

This is known as one of the “rich” neighborhoods, allowing us for time to gain some peace at the Orange Tree Garden. One of my favorite spots to see was the Circus Maximus, which is where the grand stadium that held exciting chariot races took place!

I don’t know about you, but I love starting off my day early and just being able to have the city to “myself” and avoid the majority of tourist crowds.

With the Vespa Sidecar Tour in Rome with Cappuccino excursion, that’s exactly what happened, starting off early in the morning and ending right after lunch. With a knowledgeable, fun guide to lead the way, you can soak everything in knowing you’re in good hands!

We met up with our guide, who gave us a briefing and found a configuration that suited us well, with each motorcycle and sidecar fitting two people  plus  your driver!

This is a great activity for couples who would like to go on a more exhilarating tour where they can both sit back and relax while the guide drives around.

Thanks to the handy little headphones, we always heard what our guide was saying, even when we were traveling through particularly crowded areas.

Now, I did notice that our guide tailored our guide according to our preferences and specific interests, but everyone will get to visit 12 different attractions that cover thousands of years of Roman history!

The attractions were all so impressive, and I loved the fact that we were able to see so much more with a compact Vespa, seeing things that aren’t possible with a car.

We learned about the importance behind various places, such as the Quirinal Palace, which is 1 of 3 official residences of Italy’s president.

We couldn’t go on our tour without seeing the iconic, intricate Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps which are both favorites of locals and tourists, alike! We also passed through many different squares, learning about why each one was so special!

Seeing St. Peter’s Basilica was frankly intimidating, though featured that iconic Bernini style that I love so much. I’d choose this tour any day over watching a documentary or reading a history book, making it great for families with teenagers!

3. vespa scooter tour in rome with professional photographer.

  • Duration: 1.5 to 2 hours
  • Departure: Via del Colosseo, 31, 00184 Roma RM
  • Departure Time: Between 7:00 AM & 11:00 PM
  • Includes:  Helmet, 25 photos, Vespa scooter with Driver

I’m someone who absolutely loves having photo memories of the places that I visit, experiences I have, and dishes that I’ve tried, whenever possible.

I love going back to those photos later on and reminiscing, though there are times when photos just don’t turn out well. This is where the Vespa Scooter Tour in Rome with Professional Photographer comes in, with a pro there to make sure you get wonderful snaps of your time in the Eternal City.

This tour starts off right in front of the fabled Colosseum, where you’ll meet your guide and discuss where you’d like photos, your specific interests, and answer any questions you may have.

I feel like this excursion is the perfect balance between taking photos and cruising through the city learning about its history while on a cute little Vespa! You don’t have to even worry about driving it (which can be intimidating), as your guide will be there to lead the way!

These were hands-down the best photos I’ve ever had in front of the Colosseum, and we took a few with my vintage Vespa, making it look like I’d really fit right into the Italian background.

We also got to visit the Giardino degli Aranci, which is a serene, gorgeous public park on the rich Aventine Hill with some of the best viewpoints of the entire city (note the St. Peter’s dome which stands out above the rest).

Another fun stop we made was to take photos with the “Mouth of Truth” marble mask, where tourists take photos sticking their hand into the mouth (legend says the hands of those who dare will be bitten off).

Some of the favorite photos we took was at the stunning Piazza Venezia, which is filled with mindblowing architecture that is so quintessentially Roman. The Pantheon is aptly-named the “Temple of All the Gods”, used as a church but also served as the background for our photoshoot.

Overall, this is a wonderful way to see the city in a short amount of time while gaining some of the most wonderful mementos to take home and show off.

4. Rome by Vespa: Classic Rome Tour with Pick-up

  • Departure:  Hotel pickup and drop-off
  • Departure Time: 10:00 AM, 3:00 PM, 7:00 PM
  • Includes:  Hotel pickup and drop-off, Use of a helmet, Private driver, Live commentary on board, Water, Coffee, Gelato or Snack, Professional guide

This next tour is one of the most convenient of its kind, offering a hotel pickup, a private driver, and guide who knows the city like the back of their hand.

Navigating the labyrinthine streets of Rome is no easy feat, and our guide did a fantastic job making it look like a piece of cake while keeping us all safe.

The Rome by Vespa: Classic Rome Tour with Pick Up  is a thrilling tour that combines adventure and nostalgia, transporting you back to a simpler time while retaining the charm in the modern world.

After being picked up at our hotel by a private driver, we chatted about our specific interests so they could customize a tour based around them.

The guide was clearly very passionate about their city, sharing all kinds of interesting facts about the local culture and heritage, including the classic Vespa’s background!

Don’t miss out on this chance to experience Rome from a very unique perspective, zooming through the bustling streets with the smell of delicious pastas and fresh produce wafting through the air.

I thought that I had a pretty good concept of Roman history, but our guide shared fun facts and anecdotes about art, artists, emperors, and so much more that I’d never even heard of!

From the opulent Vatican to the charming Trevi Fountain, they managed to bring every landmark to life with backstories and intrigue. I liked how often we got to get off of our Vespas to walk around and really appreciate the important monuments, taking photos and taking in all the details.

Admittedly, my favorite portion of the tour was taking a break in the foodie neighborhood of Testaccio, where I reveled in a delicious espresso and gelato (please do yourself a favor and have at least one!).

After fueling up, we hiked up to the top of Aventine Hill to take in the vista over the top of Rome. The only complaint I had was that the 3 hours were so much fun, that they just passed by too fast!

5. Highlights of Rome Vespa Sidecar Tour in the Afternoon with Gourmet Gelato Stop

  • Duration:  4 hours
  • Departure Time: 2:30 PM
  • Includes:  Headsets, Homologated CE Helmets with sterilized head covers, live and interactive commentary, Gelato Gourmet stop, Licensed Guide, Professional Drivers

I’d say this is one of the best tours to take if you have an afternoon free and would like to partake in an excursion that teaches you about Rome while sprinkling in a bit of adventure and style while doing it!

The Highlights of Rome Vespa Sidecar Tour in the Afternoon with Gourmet Gelato Stop  has all the ingredients for the making of a safe, scenic, entertaining outing!

While you’ll definitely get to see the most popular tourist attractions, the highlights are the spots off the beaten path that the vast majority of tourists don’t even know about – let alone get to see!

We met up with our guide at the Piazza della Repubblica, which was conveniently located in the center of the city. Not only did they help customize the tour around our specific interests, they shared plenty of insider anecdotes I would’ve never learned from a textbook.

The free audio headsets made listening to much easier, as we could cruise around and still hear them clearly. Each Vespa came with a sidecar and you get the option to either ride on the back of the Vespa or in the sidecar (I recommend the latter as it’s just more unique and comfy).

I find the cold gelato to be the perfect complement to the warm Roman culture and ambiance, though in all honesty, not every gelato is made the same. I was grateful that our guide clearly knew where to take us, and we ended up at a gourmet gelato place with incredible flavor and texture!

We cruised through so many different neighborhoods, but for this trip, my favorite was the bohemian Trastevere, which is lined with traditional trattorias, and interesting architecture.

If you’re on the hunt for a great family outing or fun date night activity, look no further than this one! I’ll be sure to do this educational, exhilarating tour again in the very near future!

6. Vespa Sidecar Tour at Day/Night

  • Duration : 3 hours
  • Departure : Piazza di S. Marco, 48, 00186 Roma RM
  • Departure Time : 6:00 PM
  • Includes : Driver/guide, coffee and/or tea, use of helmet

While perhaps places like New York City are more well-known as the cities that never sleep, it didn’t take me long on this tour to figure out that Rome was another one.

The Vespa Sidecar Tour at Day/Night  is a 3-hour excursion that offers the opportunity to explore the city’s hidden corners while regaling you with stories about history, culture, and adrenaline.

As the title suggests, you even get to choose between the more popular day tours and the interesting night tours, where you get to see the beautiful views from a different perspective.

While I do live in a city, I am not a fan of driving around in foreign countries if I don’t have to, so the fact that we didn’t have to worry about driving ourselves was a big relief.

This allowed us to focus solely on appreciating our surroundings, the history of the city, and the people we were with. From the thrillseeker to the hesitant homebody, I promise you’ll finish this tour up with a smile on yourself?

We met up with our guide at the Piazza di San Marco 48, which was easy to find, exploring the bustling Piazza Venezia and hopping off to take photos of the massive Vittoriano Monument and impressive architecture!

No trip to Rome is complete without seeing the Colosseum, though I also found the stories about the closeby Aventine Hill and Roman Forum particularly of interest. It felt like we had a close friend taking us everywhere, while sharing some fun and interesting stories along the way!

The Roman Baths were also a point of interest I wanted to see, and weirdly enough, I talked to friends who’d been to Rome and none of them had gone there. All in all it was a unique experience that I’d recommend to single travelers and families alike.

Our guide was even so nice that he offered to take photos of us throughout so we could have a nice souvenir afterward!

7. Vespa Tour Through Rome’s Charms with Photography

  • Duration:  2 hours
  • Departure Time: Between 8:00 PM & 6:00 PM
  • Includes:  25 raw and 5 edited photos (private tour only), 20 photos, Tiramisu, driver/guide, helmets and hygienic caps, local taxes

I’ve been to plenty of massive European cities, but no other can quite nail the charm of the smell of the espresso wafting through the air while strolling over the cobblestone streets as Vespas zip around you.

It’s quite a rush being able to see the city like this, and with the Vespa Tour Through Rome’s Charms with Photography , you get to cover even more ground. This is one of the shorter tours, but in 2 hours, you can certainly see a lot of Rome’s hidden treasures while still being easy to fit into a busy schedule.

I’ve been to Rome quite a few times, and what I didn’t have were some great photos that I felt did my time there justice. That’s where this tour comes in, highlighting some of the city’s most breathtaking places while snapping shots as you do so.

We met up with our guide, who asked us before the tour started what we were interested in seeing and what we’d already seen, so he could plan accordingly.

Thanks to the kindness and knowledge of our guide, this quickly became one of the best experiences I’d ever had in Rome, sharing with us interesting historical facts as we cruised along.

We got to see plenty of places that are more difficult to get to, and that none of us tourists had seen before! Even though I’d obviously already seen landmarks like the Colosseum and Piazza Venezia, it was fun to go back with our guide this time around and take some magnificent photos.

Something that was a lifesaver for me and my photos, was our guide suggesting different poses and angles, which I had no idea about. We even got to enjoy a little “surprise” that consisted of a traditional dessert (I’ll let you find out for yourself) that was the perfect way to end our tour.

Overall, I’d say that this tour should be one of the top options, whether it’s your first or fiftieth time in Rome.

Why Choose It?

  • Explore  the Eternal City  in style  and  comfort  from the back of a Vespa.
  • Get a local’s perspective  as you encounter  Rome’s most iconic sites .
  • Customize  your Vespa tour exactly how you want or leave it up to your  expert guide .

Tour Description

Named after the emperor Vespasian, who most historians credit as its inventor, the Vespa is the most quintessentially Roman mode of transport and a true symbol of Italy. Okay, so the first part isn’t true, but the second certainly is. And when in Rome, what better way of exploring the Eternal City than by doing as the Romans do and hopping onboard a Vespa.

Your  Rome Vespa tour  takes you through the highlights of the Eternal City in the expert company of a certified guide. See such sights as the  Colosseum  and  Roman Forum , the  Capitoline  and  Aventine  hills, the  Pantheon ,  Piazza Navona , and the  Janiculum Hill . This is your private tour, so whatever you want to see, let us know and we’ll take you there.

Visit the historic center’s most iconic landmarks

Recreate that classic scene from  Roman Holiday  as your guide whizzes you through the beating heart of the Eternal City. Passing the stampeding hordes of marauding tourists, you’ll make your way to  Piazza Navona  to admire its flowing fountains and curious design (derived from the ancient structure that belies it).

Not far away is one of the city’s most enduring ancient monuments: Hadrian’s majestic  Pantheon , a magnificent temple built in honor of all the gods. Your expert guide will tell you all you want to know about the monument, from its gripping history to its mind-blowing dimensions (did you know it still boasts the world’s largest free-standing dome?). Then hop back on your vespa and make your way to the next stop.

Admire the ancient city’s most alluring attractions

Your Rome Vespa tour will take you on a memorable journey through the center of ancient Rome to its most imposing and iconic monument – the  Colosseum . Your guide will bring this mighty amphitheater to life as you v iew its colossal exterior  from the back of a Vespa.

Ride towards the  Capitoline Hill , one of the ancient city’s most significant as it was home to the Temple of the Capitoline Triad. It was here victorious generals would arrive at the end of their triumphal parade. Now you can recreate the moment from the back of your very own motorized chariot, enjoying sweeping  views over the Roman Forum.

Ascend some of Rome’s seven hills for sublime views over the city

No Vespa tour of Rome would be complete without discovering some of the Eternal City’s best-kept secrets. Your private driver will take you off the beaten path, driving you up the  Aventine Hill  for sublime views out over the city from the secret ‘Keyhole’ besides the bountiful  Orange Garden .

Then there’s the  Janiculum , known affectionately as both the  Balcony  and the  Eighth Hill of Rome . Situated across the river from the Aventine, above the atmospheric medieval neighborhood of  Trastevere , the Janiculum offers perhaps the most sublime panorama over Rome. Enjoy it to the max as you ascend it in style, discovering all its hidden secrets along the way.

Customize your tour to include whatever sites you want

Because this is your own private tour, you can tailor it to include exactly the sites you want or leave it to the judgement of our expert guide who can select an  itinerary based on your interests . Along the way, you can stop whenever you want to  stretch your legs , snap some  photos , and indulge in some  gelato ,  coffee , or whatever else you like.

Vespa tour in Rome: All Major Highlights in 3 Hour

Tour around Rome City Centre like a true Italian. Without having to drive the Vespa yourself, you will be enjoying the ride as a passenger. We’ll give our Vespa experienced drivers to ensure your safety. This 3-hour guided tour will take you on a journey of major landmarks of Rome’s countryside.

Stop 1: Colosseum (Outside Only)

The Colosseum is the most important monument in Italy. Since 80 AD it has represented Rome. This amphitheater once hosted 50,000 spectators to enjoy gladiatorial games. Unlike many ancient architectures, this amphitheater is still astonishingly intact 2,000 years later.

With the Vespa tour, you can discover stories and anecdotes about Roman Emperors by visiting here. This Colosseum Vespa tour is available only from outside.

Stop 2: Palatine Hill (Pass By)

Palatine hill is one of the oldest seven hills of Rome, rising 40 meters above the Roman Forum. Visiting here with Vespa, you can experience hundreds of ancient remains, large structures that were formerly used and built by the Roman upper class

Stop 3: Circus Maximus

Between the Palatine and the Aventine hills, in the heart of ancient Rome, stood the first and best stadium ever built. Where the public park is today was the center of mass entertainment in ancient Rome.

Stop 4: Trevi Fountain

The most stunning fountain in Rome, built in 19 B.C. Any tour of Rome is incomplete without a look at this stunning symbol of Rome.

Along with Tritons, seahorses, and other mythological creatures, this fountain is themed after the sea god Oceanus. Tossing a coin into the Trevi Fountain and making a wish is the most popular tradition.

Stop 5: Pantheon (Pass By)

The Pantheon is a monument in the heart of Rome. This site is a must-see attraction while you are there with our Vespa tour. Explore this majestic, centuries-old building, which has served as a Catholic church since 609 CE. Alongside the knowledgeable driver guide, you will know every ins and outs of this old Roman ruins from the outside.

Stop 6: Spanish Steps

In 1723, the Spanish Steps were established in Rome. A total of 138 steps are here. There are many interesting attractions to see in the neighborhood. At the top and bottom, they connect Piazza Trinita dei Monti with Piazza di Spagna. This is mainly a meeting spot where you can take a tour around, unwind and take a rest.

Stop 7: Piazza Navona

In the heart of Rome, on the Domitian Stadium, was constructed this gorgeous square. There are numerous noteworthy collections of baroque buildings and artwork there. Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, Fontana del Moro, and Fontana del Nettuno are three of its well-known fountains. When you come here, you can explore a lot of history, wonderful restaurants, and amazing shops.

Stop 8: Piazza della Repubblica

Rome’s Piazza della Repubblica is a circular square located near the Termini train station at the base of Viminal Hill. One of the most significant squares in Rome. A very impressive site to explore its history. On one side, it is flanked by majestic structures, and on the other, a temple that appears to have been dismantled.

Stop 9: Quirinale Palace

Palazzo Quirinale, the former papal palace, the former royal palace, and the present Presidential Palace, is one of Rome’s most underappreciated destinations. When you visit this palace with a Vespa Tour, you’ll discover art, history, and culture of immeasurable worth that serve as monuments to the grit, ingenuity, and hard work of the Italian people.

Stop 10: Piazza Venezia

Piazza Venezia, often known as Venice Square, is where four important roads intersect. The Via del Corso, Via del Plebiscito, Via Teatre Marcello, and Via dei Fori Imperiali are among these streets. Piazza Venezia is well renowned for its frantic traffic across these four lanes. It is also home to many stunning structures, famous landmarks, and an old basilica. With our Rome Vespa tour, spend some time appreciating this lovely piazza rather than just passing by.

Stop 11: Piazza del Popolo

Piazza del Popolo is a significant urban square. The Tiber, Villa Borghese, the Pincio Terrace, and the city’s three main roadways are all nearby. It is a magnificent entryway to the center of the capital and a representation of the distinctly Roman flair.

Stop 12: St. Peter’s Basilica (Outside)

The renowned Gian Lorenzo Bernini created St. Peter’s Square. The St. Peter’s Basilica is located in front of the square. At the center of the square sits a stunning obelisk from ancient Egypt.

Stop 13: Trastevere

You can avoid the crowds by riding a Vespa through Trastevere to find Rome’s hidden gems. Trastevere, with its age-old cobblestone alleys, ocher colored buildings, and hippie vibe, is one of Rome’s most colorful and antique neighborhoods.

Stop 14: Mouth of Truth

There is a marble mask called “The Mouth of Truth” in Santa Maria in Cosmedin, which is located on the left wall. This gigantic marble mask was claimed to bite the hand of people who told lies. It was also portrayed in the Audrey Hepburn film The Roman Holiday. Remember to snap a picture of yourself with your hand within the Mouth of Truth.

Stop 15: Roman Walls

The Aurelian Walls are a set of city defenses that were constructed in Rome, Italy, between 271 and 275 AD, under the reigns of Aurelian and Probus. All seven of Rome’s hills were encircled by walls. Just by walking past these walls, you can go all the way back to the fourth century BC.

Apart from the listed stops, we will also pass by a lot of additional lovely locations close by! Onboard the Vespa Sidecar as your guide shares fascinating and enlightening historical details about all the major sites of beautiful Rome city.

Why This Unique Tour In Rome Was My Favorite Way To Explore The City

R ome has a rich history and vibrant culture that can transport you to a different era. Long before I ever visited Rome, what I knew of the ancient city came from the movies. I’m a classic movie buff, and Roman Holiday , the 1953 romantic comedy, is my favorite film.

The story unfolds as Princess Ann, who, during a visit to Rome, escapes her guardians to explore the city. Enter a handsome newspaper reporter who whisks her away on the back of his Vespa. I’ll never forget the images of iconic landmarks in the eternal city whizzing by as the movie unfolds.

On a recent visit, I found that exploring Rome by Vespa Sidecar Tour can make you feel like you’re living a similar fantasy.

My private Vespa Sidecar Tour was provided by Anantara Palazzo Naiadi as part of a hosted stay at the beautiful hotel. As always, all opinions are my own.

The Vespa Sidecar Tour

The Vespa Sidecar tour offers a unique way to discover the city’s famous landmarks, hidden gems, and picturesque squares. As you motor through the bustling city, you can imagine yourself as Audrey Hepburn’s character, Princess Ann, embarking on her own Roman adventure.

The company’s owner, Luca Di Trapano, explained that the Vespa Sidecar Tour was born in a flash of inspiration after 2 decades of giving tours in Rome. He thought the concept was genius but later learned his idea was 45 years too late.

The makers of the Vespa stopped producing the model equipped with a sidecar in 1968. Not easily deterred, he persevered and brought his dream to reality. Since 2018, Luca has welcomed over 20,000 passengers on board without a single accident. He told me, “It is like having sailed through the streets of Rome with four or five gigantic cruise ships!”

The tours are 3 hours, depending on traffic. The price is 110 euros per person (about $117) on the small group tour (12 guests max). You can take the tour solo as I did or with a companion or group. Trade places halfway through for a new perspective. A private tour’s price depends on the number of guests.

Here are several reasons why you should explore Rome on this unique Vespa tour.

Easy Meeting Point

Piazza della Repubblica is the tour meeting point. The square is well-connected and easy for drop-offs by taxis and vehicles. Take the subway Line A to the Repubblica-Teatro dell’Opera stop. It’s just a 2-minute walk from the Central Termini Railway Station.

Pro Tip: If you want somewhere to stay close by, I recommend Anantara Palazzo Naiadi Rome Hotel . A restored 19th-century, crescent-shaped palazzo, it fronts Piazza della Repubblica, where the Vespa tour starts. At the assigned time, I met my guide, Alessio, at the concierge desk. My chariot, i.e. baby blue Vespa, was waiting just outside.

The Iconic Landmarks Of Rome

Exploring the highlights of the Eternal City, we visited 12 sights, including the Spanish Steps, Piazza del Popolo, and the Borghese Gardens. There were several opportunities to stop, stretch our legs, and linger, including the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon.

It’s A Blast!

When exploring the beautiful city of Rome, I loved all the astonished looks on people’s faces as we made our way down tight alleys and broad avenues. I felt like a movie star — everyone was smiling, waving, and snapping our photo. We must have been quite a sight; something special to share with family members when you get home.

Avoid The Crowds

What’s the best way to avoid crowds and see a different side of Rome? See it on a Vespa! If you’re fearless, you could rent one yourself. But my advice? Enlist a pro. You will feel much safer riding next to or behind someone who understands the ins and outs of Rome’s streets, where locals think traffic lanes are merely suggestions.

It’s A Beautiful Ride

The Vespa is a classic: These stunning coupes from Italy are iconic on the streets of Rome. Piaggio & Co. started making the Vespa after WWII as cheap, affordable transportation. Eventually, in 1953, the hit movie Roman Holiday showed the world how great a Vespa could be, resulting in record sales. Like the Colosseum, the Italian scooter has remained a part of Italy’s landscape. You will feel like an authentic Italian in the sidecar of a Vespa.

Unique And Unforgettable Way To See The Eternal City

Unlike larger vehicles, a Vespa can easily maneuver through tight spaces, allowing you to see more of the city’s hidden gems and local hotspots. As you zip through the streets, you’ll experience the city in an exciting and unique way. Your guide will share his knowledge of the city’s history and culture, providing insights into the backstories of the pivotal figures in the Roman Empire.

A Driver And Official Guide Rolled Into One

My driver, Alessio, wasn’t just a history buff: He’s also an official guide, which means he’s been trained to lead tours and provide in-depth information on all the sites you’ll see. He knows how to keep you engaged, entertained, and informed, making your Vespa tour an unforgettable experience. Throughout the tour, he shared fascinating facts, historical anecdotes, and his favorite neighborhoods and restaurants. With his expertise and passion for sharing the city’s rich history, you’ll have a one-of-a-kind adventure that you’ll remember for years to come.

Radio-Connected Modern Whispers

As we cruised along the streets of Rome, Alessio provided commentary directly into my ear through a modern whisper system. He pointed out the window overlooking St. Peter’s Square where the Pope makes his Sunday address. It was chilling to see the balcony above the Piazza Venezia, where Mussolini delivered his most famous speech, the declaration of war on France and Britain in 1940.

A Sense Of Freedom And Excitement

Take in Rome’s sights, sounds, and smells from the open-air Vespa sidecar. You can enjoy the warm breeze on your face, witness the daily life of Romans, and immerse yourself in the city’s timeless beauty.

Pro Tip: Three hours is about the right amount of time to get a taste of Rome. I saw much more than I would in a walking tour, and it was a better experience than a hop-on, hop-off bus tour — we could go where large coaches could not.

I Felt Safe

The guides are expert drivers and the top-class helmets have face shields and disposable head covers. The passenger wears a seatbelt with a shoulder harness. We traveled at the most 24 miles per hour; just the right pace. Once you are on board, your unease fades away as you sit back, hold on, and enjoy the thrill of exploring Rome on a Vespa.

The Hidden Gems Of Rome

Rome is one of the most beautiful places in Italy and a real bucket-list destination. But allow some time to visit the hidden gems many tourists miss. Janiculum Hill, called the “Eighth Hill of Rome,” is a beautiful, often overlooked area with the best views of Rome. It’s a bit of a climb on foot, but on a Vespa, sit back and enjoy the ride. Piazzale Garibaldi in the center has the Giuseppe Garibaldi Monument with a cannon that fires daily at noon. Don’t miss the 17th-century Aqua Paola Fountain.

Cappuccino And Cornetto

After visiting the Pantheon, we stopped for a cappuccino and cornetto, the traditional Roman breakfast choice. Our baby blue Vespa was parked nearby and I enjoyed watching how much attention it got from passersby. On the afternoon tours, customers are offered gelato instead.

Unforgettable Experience

This is the perfect gift for someone who has done everything and an unforgettable experience for curious travelers of all ages. You will carry home remarkable moments and fun memories.

Would I recommend Vespa Sidecar Tour? Absolutely. If this had been my first time in Rome, it would have given me a good overview of the places I would like to return to for a deeper dive. I have been to Rome several times, but until now, I’ve never seen the eternal beauty of Rome from the seat of a Vespa sidecar. And the coin I tossed into the Trevi Fountain guarantees I’ll be back.
