tour de france auto optic 2000

INTRODUCTION

historical version of one of the oldest car rallies in the world, original conception alternating timed sessions on road & circuit, with a unique atmosphere: the tour auto is one of the few events in the world that any historic car enthusiast would not miss.

Created in 1899 by the Automobile Club de France, the Tour Auto is the oldest motor racing event still in operation. It has become one of the most prestigious rallies in the world, attracting legendary makes such as Ferrari, Porsche, Jaguar, Mercedes, Maserati, Matra driven by equally renowned drivers such as Maurice Trintignant, Stirling Moss, Phil Hill, Bernard Darniche, Jean Pierre Beltoise, Henri Pescarolo … In the 1980s, economic constraints linked to the oil crisis weakened the event and 1986 saw the 50 th and last edition of the Tour Auto take place, at least in the version it was in at the time.

The revival of this event in 1992 (already over thirty years ago!) in the form of a historical retrospective, was an immediate success. Three years were enough to establish the event as one of the world’s most important automobile events for major collectors.

2024 EDITION

Long-awaited by fans of the event, the route of the Tour Auto 2024 has now been revealed. Starting in Paris, Tours (La Grange de Meslay), Limoges, Carcassonne, Pau and finally Biarritz will be the stage towns for each day from 21 to 27 April. Drivers will compete on the Le Mans, Val de Vienne, Nogaro and Pau Arnos circuits !

Paris, France — The 29th iteration of Peter Auto’s Tour Auto Optic 2000 rally was held last week (Aug. 31 – Sept. 5) with 210 cars covering 1,234 miles throughout France. The tour began at the historical Grand Palais in Paris and culminated at the gates of Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet. VM reader and photographer Unai Ona followed the group throughout their journey and was generous enough to share his photos with us.

Peter Auto has also shared a number of videos from the event through their YouTube channel – like this one that shows the final leg of the trip and some spirited racing around Circuit Paul Ricard.

In all it looks like it was a spectacular week for all involved. Enjoy the sights.

Tour Auto Optic 2000

tour de france auto optic 2000

The 26 th Tour Auto Optic 2000 will take place from April 24-30, 2017, along a new route devised by Peter Auto for the 230 entrants. After the traditional exhibition under the glass dome of the Grand Palais in Paris, the cars will set off for Brittany for the first time in the history of the event.

Peter Auto’s aim is to provide a completely new route each year, and for 2017 it will take participants on a journey across another part of France. After leaving the capital the crews will head out to discover the roads and landscapes of Brittany before heading south.

Every year Peter Auto highlights a manufacturer or a type of car that has been involved in the history of the Tour de France Automobile. For the 26 th event, the spotlight will be focused on French makes that are no longer produced, including CG, Delahaye, Facel Vega, Hotchkiss, Jide, Pichon Parat, René Bonnet, Salmson and Simc, along with the famous Panhards and DBs created by Charles Deutsch and René Bonnet (above, photo courtesy Peter Auto) that will enjoy pride of place next April. The Tour Auto Optic 2000 is among the not-to-be-missed events on the motor sporting calendar: sportsmanship, rarity and legend are the recipe for its success. This rally is a real open-air encyclopedia and an ode to motor racing. The route of the 30th running of the greatest French historic rally will be unveiled soon.

Tour Auto Optic 2000: August 30 – September 4, 2021

Today, motor sport knows no frontiers as championships and the events counting for them are held all over the world. But to which country do we owe this brilliant idea? To France, where the very first motor race was organised at the end of the 19th century.

Tour Auto Optic 2000

Motor Racing, a French story

It was in this era, in 1899 to be exact, that the Tour de France Automobile was held for the first time. The aim was to promote motor car mobility all over the country. Today, this race is considered as the most important motoring event of the 19th century, and is indeed the oldest still being organised. Since 1992, the Peter Auto teams have paid homage to this French pioneering and sporting spirit with the Tour Auto Optic 2000 as well as continuing to write the history of French motor racing.

An Inside Look At The Tour de France Automobile

tour de france auto optic 2000

Photography by Rémi Dargegen

Most of the world’s more affluent nations have hosted epic road races, with often the most grueling contests formed in countries who housed pioneers of the auto industry. Examples? Italy’s Mille Miglia, the Nürburgring Nordschleife Circuit in Germany, and the world’s first 24-hour race, held in 1907 at Brooklands in the UK. The Tour de France Automobile, first held in 1899, was reborn in 1992 as a long-distance classic car competition, similar to the Mille Miglia. Petrolicious photographer Rémi Dargegen  was on-hand to capture the sights of this year’s event, officially named Le Tour Auto Optic 2000.

Great stuff, love the pics! We are restoring the 1972 Grp2 winner of the T de F, the #64 Ford Capri RS2600 raced by Jean Vinatier.

One correction to the opening paragraph, however. The world’s first 24-hour automobile race was NOT Brooklands. It was Columbus Ohio: http://www.motorsport.com/history/news/the-world-s-first-24-hour-race/
