11 Dramatic Virtual Tours of Stages Around the World

By Google Arts & Culture

A unique theatre (1769) by Antonio Bibiena Teatro Bibiena

All the world's a stage... Step inside some of the most beautiful theaters, concert halls, and opera houses in the world and experience the grandeur and drama of these iconic venues.

The Bolshoi Theater, Moscow The world-famous Bolshoi Theater in Russia was designed by architect Andrei Mikhailov and holds performances of ballet and opera on its dazzling stage. During WW2, to stop the theater from being a target for bombers, the front colonnade of the building was disguised using the set from a classic opera. Explore behind-the-scenes of its costume department, or take a tour of the exterior of the building.

Carnegie Hall, New York City A prestigious venue for both classical and popular music performances, Carnegie Hall in Midtown Manhattan is made up of three auditoriums. There's a famous old joke that nearby the building a pedestrian stopped a musician from the venue and asked, "How do you get to Carnegie Hall?" Without looking up the musician replied, "Practice." Discover the origins of the building or watch a video of The Philadelphia Orchestra performing in 360.

National Theater of Korea, Seoul Opened in 1950, The National Theater of Korea was the first national theater in Asia. It houses four performance groups, including the National Changgeuk Company, which is traditional Korean opera performed as a play, but in a folk song style known as pansori. Discover more about the theater's history and performances, or watch some changgeuk.

Theatro Municipal, São Paulo Situated in Brazil, the Theatro Municipal in São Paulo is mainly constructed from materials imported from Europe, as was the custom when it was built in 1903. The stage decorations didn't arrive in time for the opening night, so its first staged production had to be postponed! Explore what happens backstage or watch a 360 video of Wagner's Lohengrin performed at the theater.

Burgtheatre, Vienna The second-oldest theater in Europe, the Burgtheatre was built in 1741 and was was largely destroyed by bombs and fire in 1945, but has since been fully restored. The extravagantly-painted ceiling of the grand staircase includes early work from Gustav Klimt, and includes his only known self-portrait. Explore the ceiling artwork in detail.

Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg One of the most acoustically advanced concert halls in the world, the Elbphilarmonie has only recently been built, and opened its doors in January 2017. The Grand Hall is designed so that the performers sit in the middle of the audience, and is walled with 10,000 individually shaped plates that disperse the sound waves. Discover how the building was created, go backstage, or watch some if its performers in 360.

The Colosseum, Rome The Colosseum might not be fully in action any longer, but in its time was the site of numerous forms of ancient Roman entertainment, from gladiatorial contests to Classic mythological dramas. Positioned in the middle of Rome, it is the largest amphitheater (open-air venue) ever built. Discover what it looks like from the outside or see a scale model of what it would have looked like when it was in use.

Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico City The distinctive Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico is built in a mix of architectural styles, with Art Nouveau dominating the exterior and an Art Deco interior. The inside is decorated with artworks by prominent Mexican muralists, such as Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros and the stained glass "curtain" above the stage is a foldable glass panel by Louis Comfort Tiffany. Take a tour of the outside of the building.

Sydney Opera House, Sydney Designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, who was chosen as part of an international competition, the Sydney Opera House is a multi-venue performing arts centre that hosts well over 1,500 performances a year. The first person to perform at the Sydney Opera House was Paul Robeson, who sang Ol' Man River to the construction workers as they ate lunch. You can tour one of the venue's stages or discover stories about its design and events.

Teatro Bibiena, Mantua Teatro Bibiena is also known as the "scientific theater" as it was intended to host both theater productions and concerts, and scientific discourses and conventions. Designed by Antonio Galli Bibiena in 1767, a 13-year-old Mozart performed here on its opening night. Explore the painted frescoes or watch a music video filmed here.

Palais Garnier, Paris At first glance, this may not look like something that can be found at one of the most famous opera houses in the world, however you might recognize it if you've ever seen Phantom of the Opera. The Paris Opera House lake resides underneath the foundations of the grandiose building due to the marshy area in which it was built. Take a tour of the magnificent stage, see the view from the roof or watch a performance by the Paris Opera Ballet in 360.

Captain Corelli’s Mandolin

A personal favorite! In the summer of 2000, the majestic island of Kefalonia was the setting for this romantic and war film. The story follows the events of World War II and the love between an Italian officer and a Greek local woman of the resistance. Among the protagonists of Madden's film, besides Penelope Cruz, Nicholas Cage, Irene Pappas and Christian Bale, was the unforgettable British actor John Hurt. Music is the answer!

5. Travel to Athens through reading

A timeless way to explore Athens through armchair travel! Our minds are the best screenings since we have the tendency to create whole worlds with just our imagination. So, with the authors’ guidance, let your imagination take you away to Greek lands and stories:

Walking in Athens with Constantine Cavafy

Constantine Cavafy, one of the best poets of his generation, spent the year of 1901 wandering in Athens for the first time. Like the European travelers that would visit Greece and describe everything that would see, Cavafy captures in those pages the city of Athens as he sees it. Although more than a century has gone by since his visit, the city has preserved the broad outline of its physiognomy and it is very interesting to ‘see’ Athens as it looked like at the beginning of the 19th century. Reading the book is like traveling to Athens with Cavafy as your companion; a fascinating experience!

Rebetiko (The Bad Herb), by David Prudhomme

This multi-award winning graphic novel takes us back to 1936 when the dictator Metaxas is cracking down on rebetis and their way of life. The story follows a group of friends - Rebetiko musicians - in the streets of Athens as they make their way through the Athenian backstreets, ouzeris and market squares, playing music, dancing, drinking and dodging the police. A must-read!

North of Ithaka, by Eleni Gage

Author Eleni Gage, the granddaughter of the legendary Eleni Gatzogianni from the Greek village of Lia in Epirus, travels to Greece to rebuild the ruins of her namesake's home and come to terms with her family’s tragic history. Through Eleni’s humorous misadventures, we discover the beautiful Epirus and local Greek customs and traditions. North of Ithaka is a magical journey that will make you laugh and weep as you travel to Greece and discover a family saga and Greek culture.

6. It’s all Greek to me

Some languages require more than a year of study to learn the basics, while others only take a few weeks. But which is the most difficult of all? The ranking by UNESCO proposes Greek as the 2nd most difficult language in the world. However, this shouldn’t discourage you from learning some Greek! There is no better way of understanding a culture than learning its language. How you can learn Greek from home? Check Duolingo , which is an easy and fun way to learn Greek.

7. Explore authentic Greek music

Greek music has shown enormous diversity and variety, which has been further enhanced by the movement of music from the internet but we will narrow it down for you. Modern Greek music has a large variety depending on taste, from electronic to folk, so it is better to recommend lists that are established in time and in terms of tradition:

Travel to the islands and dance away your sorrows! Wonderful sounds that have raised many generations of Greeks. Listen to this playlist and you will understand why. Our personal favorite song? Ikariotiko!

The golden age of Greek cinema has produced wonderful soundtracks and award-winning songs that are still in our hears and a big part of Greek culture. Listen to the music that nourished Greeks for many decades. Check this list on Spotify.

9. It’s wine o’clock!

Any attempt to record the history of Greek wine, although it is an exciting journey through time, is an extremely complex and complicated undertaking since it will have to go back thousands of years ago! Greeks had a God of Wine, Dionysus, on their Pantheon, and today, wine remains present on the table of Greeks. Even during the Turkish occupation, when wine was forbidden by the conquerors, it still managed to find its way on the Greek table. Greek wine offers some unique and delicious varieties.

Although not as famous as the Santorini or Nemean wines, Athens offers some excellent wine choices as well. Savvatiano is a popular grape in and around Athens with a high tolerance to heat, mentioned even by Homer itself! It produces white wines that are easy to drink, characterized by its fruity aromas and are perfect for everyday meals. You can discover more of this variety here .

Stroll in the alleys of Athens and discover Greek wine and culture with Marc Supsic in this YouTube video .

If you wish to learn more about the Greek varieties and travel across the land, watch this video with local Greek producers presenting their wines!

10. Plant a Greek herb garden

The Greek soil is blessed with aromatic herbs that make up a big part of the Mediterranean cuisine. Rich in aromas and flavors, you can plant a herb garden in your yard or balcony and have a piece of Greece always with you! The history of herbs goes far, far away. Greek herbs have been used since ancient times by many peoples. Theophrastus in Ancient Greece was known as the "father of botany". The ancient Greeks were quite experienced and knowledgeable about plants and their uses, especially herbs.

Diktamos is a therapeutic and aromatic plant that only grows in the Greek island of Crete, while wild lavender will beautify your space and keep bugs away. Try planting some mint to fill the air with a sweet fragrance and oregano to flavor your homemade Greek recipe! Close your eyes.. and you’re in Athens!

The Art of Ancient Greek Theater

This exhibition explores the many ways Greek drama was interpreted by ancient Greek artists, whose works are frequently the only surviving evidence of the performing arts in antiquity. A wide variety of objects — including sculptures, painted vases, and a rare fragmentary papyrus — brings to life the rich history of ancient Greek theater.

Subsequent generations of Greeks throughout the mainland and colonies of South Italy and Sicily (Magna Graecia) witnessed the restaging of renowned as well as long-lost comedies and tragedies, resulting in a notable artistic output. Theater-related vases from this region are distinguished by innovative imagery that often suggests the painters were present at the performances. In the 300s B.C. the popularity of Menander's comedies spurred the widespread production of statuettes and masks based on character types that remained constant into the Roman period.

The exhibition coincides with the Outdoor Theater production of Sophocles' Elektra , with performances from September 9 to October 2, 2010.

This tour looks at burial goods, pottery, coins, and marble sculptures to address themes such as representations of women, burial practices, and the intersections of archaeology, myths, and literature. Learn about the ancient Olympic Games, Greek social practices, and the development of coinage.

Mediterranean Galleries Tour Introduction

The Penn Museum’s Mediterranean section has more than 30,000 objects ranging from the Early Bronze Age, around 5,000 years ago, to 19th century reproductions of ancient Roman artifacts from Pompeii.

People in the ancient world were often buried with objects that exemplified their lives and cultural values. Archaeologists can learn about ancient people by studying their burial assemblages.

Greek Coins

The first coins appeared in the Mediterranean more than 2,500 years ago but evolved from much earlier methods of bartering. The ancient Greeks marked their coins with gods and animals that represented their city-states.

Birth of Athena

The Greeks painted well-known mythological scenes on their ceramic vases. Much like movie posters, these stories are represented with a single scene and are recognizable to those who know the myth.

The ancient symposium, or drinking party, was an important part of life for upper-class Greek men. We can use images of the symposium and the sympotic vessels themselves to reconstruct many elements of this social event.

Greek Athletics

The first Olympic games are said to have taken place in 776 BCE at the site of Olympia, but athletics took place all year long and all around the Greek world.

Grave Markers

Like today, the ancient Greeks often marked the graves of their deceased loved ones with elaborately carved marble headstones.

Birth of Venus

Images of Venus, the Roman goddess of love, were found all over the ancient world. These images still influence artistic representations of women today.

The Greek playwright Menander wrote more than 100 comedic plays in his lifetime. He was so well-loved that a statue of him was erected in the Theater of Dionysus in Athens and was copied many times over hundreds of years.

Explore Greece with a Greek Mythology Movie

Let’s admit it, the movie time is one of the best family moments. Kids enjoy so much watching a film with the parents and is always a great chance for relaxing and chat. So if your kids love greek mythology, prepare a big bowl of popcorn and select one of the following movies:

Wrath of Titans has many fans and is the sequel to the Clash of the Titans . Gods have lost their hold over the fierce and legendary Titans, so Perseus takes the difficult role to rescue Zeus and the whole human race. After all, greek heroes are brave enough to face the scary Titans. And if your kids still have questions after the movie, join our Greek Mythology Online Class . They will learn all about the Creation of the world and the battles of Titans and Olympians.

Troy and 300 are among our all times classic Greek mythology movies. Certain scenes might be too violent for young kids, but they carry all the greatness and legacy of the ancient Greek warriors. And of course, the Percy Jackson films are always a great hit for mythology lovers.

Greek mythology stories are a great educational tool. Greek mythology is stories about gods, kings, and heroes and often relate to the creation of the world and sometimes its future destruction as well. They tell how aspects of nature and men were created. They depict the relationships between various gods and between gods and men. To make these concepts accessible for young kids, we recommend the books listed in  Books about Greek Mythology .

Our kids love in particular the books of Percy Jackson .

See the Ancient World Through Virtual Reality

An archaeological VR company wants to show you what ruins looked like before they were, well, ruins

Emily Matchar

Emily Matchar

Innovation Correspondent

vr1.png

Have you ever stood in front of historic ruins—the Parthenon, say, or one of Britain’s many ancient castles—and closed your eyes, imagining what the scene before you would have looked like centuries ago?

Thanks to virtual reality, seeing ruins as they looked in their heyday is becoming possible. It may even be a game changer for the ways we visit ancient cities like Jerusalem or Paris.

When I catch up with Australian archaeologist Simon Young, he’s in Rome.

“It’s low season at the moment in Italy, but there are still hundreds and thousands of people wandering in the streets and looking at ruins,” he says.

Young would like to show those people what Rome looked like nearly 2,000 years ago by fitting them with virtual reality headsets. His company, Lithodomos VR , creates immersive virtual recreations of iconic ruins. The recreations can be used on site with a smartphone headset, or from home or school using a commercial VR system like Oculus Rift.

“It’s 360-degree 3D virtual reality,” Young says. “It really helps you to place yourself back in time.”

See the Ancient World Through Virtual Reality

Today, Rome’s Temple of Venus and Rome lies split in half, most of its columns gone, ravaged by centuries of fire, earthquakes and pillaging. But put on a virtual reality headset with Lithodomos’ app, and suddenly it’s a June afternoon in the 1 st  century AD. The temple before you is whole again, its vanished columns standing tall, its façade all shining white marble, the intricate relief sculptures of its pediment cast in shadow by the summer sun.

The app maps your physical location onto the temple, allowing you to look around from various angles. It might be raining outside, or nighttime. But in the VR world, the sky is a hazy blue, the perimeter of the temple lined with trees.

In addition to the Temple of Venus and Rome, Lithodomos has a recreation of the Arènes de Lutèce, a Roman amphitheater and stage from the beginning of the 2nd century AD, now just fragments tucked away behind apartment buildings in Paris’s Latin Quarter. It’s also recreated the Odeon of Agrippa, a concert hall in the center of the Athenian agora, and parts of ancient Jerusalem. The scenes are available on two Lithodomos apps released in December and January. Young plans to work on scenes from Delphi, Spain and the UK in the near future.

Young sees his software being used by tour groups who would provide their guests with headsets, or by individuals using cheap, portable viewers like  Google Cardboard . He also hopes to partner with museums and universities to create other historical VR experiences, such as allowing museum-goers to view artifacts up close and in 360 degrees.

Lithodomos is not the only company working on historical VR.  Singapore-based Hiverlab  has ambitions to digitize heritage sites across the world. So far they’ve created a VR tour of a medieval Armenian church in Cypress, which lets users wander the structure as it is today, as well see what it might have looked like centuries ago. The free  Timelooper app  lets viewers experience various historical moments—George Washington’s second inaugural address, the construction of the Empire State Building, the Great Fire of London.

In the past several months, Young says, several tour operators in Rome have begun offering VR-enhanced tours. The day before, he’d been to the Domus Aurea, the “Golden House” built by Nero in the 1 st  century AD. The site’s superintendent had installed an Oculus Rift experience, and visitors were busy checking it out.

“One woman swore, she was so amazed by the experience,” Young says.

But as an archeologist, Young worries that some companies offering ancient world VR experiences aren’t serious enough about accuracy.

“Some game developer in Silicon Valley who has no idea thinks, ‘oh, a column would look great there,’” he says. “The real danger is that, because VR is such a powerful medium, if someone visits the Colosseum, they walk away with the idea that this is what it was like.”

Ancient Greece – A Virtual Tour

By Rachel Lankester, founder Magnificent Midlife

Visit ancient Greece on a virtual tour. Travelling there, it’s the ancient beauty of the country that comes to the fore, not to mention the gorgeous blue skies and seas. After all, Greece was the crucible of civilisation, democracy, theatre, and philosophy – the very birthplace of the Western world.

This virtual tour starts in Athens at the Parthenon, dominated by the incredible Acropolis  and then travels to Delphi, where mortals, via the ‘oracle’ communicated with the god Apollo. Then we visit ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games and Mycenae the ancient home of Agamemnon who united the Greeks.

Our last ancient site is Epidaurus, the greatest healing centre and finest theatre, with the most amazing acoustics, in the ancient world.

The tour also visits the charming coastal town of Nafplion and the beautiful  island of Spetses.  We cross the Charilaos Trekoupis Bridge linking the Peloponnese to mainland Greece and the Corinth Canal which made the former peninsula a true island.

Enjoy our virtual tour!
