travel phone cases canada

No case I have ever owned for an iPhone has been such a conversation starter and given me the bragging rights I have. I get to tell everyone I have this protective (yes I've dropped my phone from about 4 feet to concrete in it, not on purpose!), stylish, and the best part, compostable! I mean what's not to like!

travel phone cases canada

My little girl has dropped my phone so many times but it has been protected by my Pela case. The texture makes it kind of grippy which is good. And most importantly it’s compostable. Love that there’s no plastic in the packaging!! Great brand!!

travel phone cases canada

Absolutely wonderful color, texture, and flexibility. This case matches my turquoise iPhone 11 perfectly which is exactly what I was hoping for. On top of that, their customer service team was excellent and answered my questions very quickly. I would recommend these cases to anyone looking to reduce their waste and/or in need of a replacement case.

Pela Sustainable Phone Cases

The phone industry has a HUGE problem. Greedy companies use cheap, polluting plastics for their phone cases.

Our cases will protect your phone and still look super cute doing it.

Honestly, we're just trying to be less evil.

So the real question is...why NOT pela?

5 Best Travel Phone Cases for Your iPhone 12 // A Travel Gift Guide

1. speck's wallet case [best wallet case].

These are hands down our favorite travel phone cases and favorite wallet cases. Or phone cases period. We’ve used them since our iPhone 4’s, and naturally, as we upgraded our phones, we upgraded to these cases as well.

We like the sleek and clean look of it, and I like that I can leave my purse and wallet behind and just have my ID, 2 credit cards, and phone all in one place.

Speck Wallet Case - Best Travel Phone Case

2. Peak Design Mobile [Best Versatility]

We love Peak Design so when they launched Mobile , we were immediately on board. It’s an entire ecosystem with different accessories for what you need. We can’t wait to use the wallet, desk set up, and tripod.

3. Lifeproof Case [Best Waterproof Travel Phone Case]

It’s waterproof, dirtproof, snowproof, and shockproof. I like the fact that with the LifeProof cases you can go to the beach,  go hike the Narrows , etc and not have to have a death grip on your phone. We personally love these cases for special occasions or trips, but not for every day.

I was also sad to find out on a snorkeling trip that water plays tricks on the screen making it impossible to focus. You can use the side buttons and you may get lucky with a few shots, but most of our photos came out blurry. There really aren’t any iPhone cases so far with the technology for great underwater photography though.

5 Best Travel Phone Cases for Your iPhone 11

4. Torras Crystal CLear Slim Case [Best Minimalist Travel Phone Case]

We’re all about packing light and every little bit seriously helps. Don’t underestimate all the little stuff especially if you’re on a backpacking trip. The ultra-thin casing doesn’t hide the original design of the phone.

5 Best Travel Phone Cases for Your iPhone 11

5. Alpatronix Ultra Slim Battery Case [ Best Battery Travel Phone Case]

The slimmest battery case out there (so far). When we’re on the go, we definitely drain our batteries a lot. Though it adds weight and is bulkier, it’s nice to have the assurance that your phone will last you all day or multiple days for backpacking trips. Right now we use this portable charger , but having the chord can be annoying, so Alpatronix is a nicer option for you, but for now it works fine for us.

Are you using any travel phone cases that we missed? What are your favorite cases or phone accessories?

Travel + Leisure / Marcus Millan

Heading off on a much needed beach retreat? Consider bringing along a waterproof phone case with features like drop protection, underwater capabilities, and touchscreen features so you can text, scroll, and snap pictures underwater while keeping your phone safe.

“For the best and safest waterproof phone case, you will want to ensure that any openings on the phone are sealed, the screen protector is airtight, and verify how deep the case is said to protect the phone, which can range from five feet to over 100 feet,” Michael Clarke, Sandals Resorts International’s Corporate Director of Watersports, recommends. If you’re ready to get going on your next water adventure, don’t forget to pack one of these waterproof phone cases for any activity from snorkeling to diving to playing in the sand.

Best Overall

Otterbox frē series waterproof case.

It’s waterproof up to two meters for up to an hour at a time.

This model is specific to iPhone 15 Pro Max users, so be sure to select the correct size for your phone .

If you’re prone to dropping your phone, consider the protective qualities of the Otterbox Frē Series, which are waterproof cases with built-in screen protection made for optimal shock absorption. In fact, it has been tested to withstand five times as many drops as the average phone case.

We also love that this case is made from 25 percent recycled plastics found in the ocean. Other beneficial features to the Otterbox Frē case includes wireless charging capabilities (it’s a magsafe case) and dust protection around the ports. Once you head to water, you can submerge the case up to two meters for up to an hour — plenty of time to get some waterside selfies and explore some underwater life.

The Details: Polycarbonite | iPhone15 Pro Max | 6.6-foot depth | IP68

Case-mate Waterproof Phone Pouch

With the adjustable lanyard and crossbody strap, you can keep your waterproof phone pouch close and connected.

The pouch offers little drop protection, so we recommend leaving your phone in its case before sliding into the pouch.

If you’re heading off on a sand, snow, or water-based vacation, it’s smart to have a waterproof phone pouch to protect your device from the elements. The waterproof pouch from Case-mate works with any phone type that fits and features handy touchscreen access so you can take photos and videos while snorkeling, boating, bodyboarding, and any number of activities without having to take your phone out of the pouch and risk it getting wet. Additionally, if you’re using the pouch on the water, it will float back up if it slips out of your hand, so you can enjoy the water worry-free.

The Details: Thermoplastic polyurethane | Compatible with all phones up to 6.7 inches in screen size | 2-foot depth | IP68

Best Two-pack

Joto waterproof phone pouch ipx8.

It’s designed to protect your phone in up to 100 feet of water.

The protective screen can negatively affect the “selfie” camera, so you may need to adjust your standard settings.

The Joto Waterproof Phone Pouch offers an affordable two-pack case with a straightforward design handy for most smartphone users. Holding up to environmental conditions from sand to sea, the Joto pouch fits easily in purses or carry-ons and can even fit multiple devices at once with its snap and lock construction (if you only want the protection and not usability). If you like to freedive or snorkel, this is a great option as it is IPX8 certified to 100 feet (30 meters), offering a high level of water protection.

The Details: Polyvinyl chloride | Compatible with all phones up to 6.8 inches in screen size | 100-foot depth | IPX8

Best for Underwater Photography

Catalyst waterproof total protection case.

The clear case won’t distort your underwater photos or muffle audio recordings.

This case is not universal, so be sure to select the proper size for your phone model .

The Catalyst Waterproof Total Protection Case can be used for everyday phone protection or as a temporary case when you are out in nature for extra protection. The case has a drop protection of 6.6 feet and is designed to prevent serious scratches on the polycarbonate surface. This case is also designed with a clear camera lens that won’t warp or affect photos, even underwater, so you can ensure a clear shot. The microphone capabilities also ensure no sound is lost or muffled if you’re recording through the case.

Keep the case close to you throughout your activities with the included lanyard that works well even in water (and allows you to go hands-free without losing your phone in case of emergency.) It also includes built-in wireless connectivity to allow you to charge your phone through the case so the adventures can continue uninterrupted.

The Details: Polycarbonate | iPhone 14 to iPhone 14 Pro Max | 33-foot depth | IP68 | 6.6-foot drop protection

Best for Camping

Casetify bounce extreme.

The 9.8-foot drop protection gives your case the extra sturdiness needed for outdoor adventures.

The extra durable case may soften phone calls and video recordings.

With the Casetify Bounce Extreme, your device will be protected from drops from over 9 feet high due to the EcoShock materials, making it a worthy case to have on those rocky campground and hiking trails. Additionally, the reinforced bumpers on the case add to the drop protection when you have a more aggressive phone slip. For water enthusiasts, the Bounce Extreme case will withstand submersion up to 6.6 feet for up to one hour of fun whether you’re snorkeling, kayaking, or whitewater rafting. While this case is designed to fit the iPhone 14 Pro, be sure to check out the Casetify store for a durable phone case made for your model .

The Details: Polycarbonate | iPhone 14 Pro | 6.6-foot depth for one hour | IP68 | 9.8- foot drop protection

Best for Snorkeling

Temdan waterproof case.

The tempered glass screen protector allows for clear and crisp photos on both front-facing and rear-facing camera lenses.

You must make sure all the plugs are sealed before using otherwise you may suffer leaks.

Built with a tempered glass screen protector and 360-degree full-body shockproof protection, the Temdan Waterproof Case can withstand military grade drops. It’s rated IP68 for underwater protection, which means it can be submerged in up to 6.6 feet of water for up to one hour, which is perfect for snorkelers looking to take surface-level photos and videos. The case also supports wireless charging, so you don’t need to remove it when you want to charge your phone. This case can be used as your daily phone protection as it is extremely durable, but do note that the thick case may muffle sounds from phone calls, videos, and more.

The Details: Thermoplastic Polyurethane | iPhone 12 to iPhone 15 Pro Max | 6.6-foot depth for one hour | IP68

Tips for Buying a Waterproof Phone Case

Think about buoyancy and depth capabilities.

When looking for a waterproof phone case, consider the buoyancy capabilities. You may want to look for a device with built-in floatation abilities or opt for a pouch with a lanyard to ensure your phone does not sink if it’s dropped while swimming or snorkeling.

Consider screen and camera accessibility

When you are planning for n an outdoor adventure such as camping, swimming, or kayaking, you may want to choose a waterproof phone case that has touchscreen capabilities so that you can access the phone features without taking it out of the case. Additionally, you may want to test that your waterproof phone case still takes high-quality photos and videos (with clear audio), so you can capture your memories without issue.

IP ratings grade the resistance of an enclosure to dust and liquids and consist of two numbers that rate the resistance to solids and liquids respectively. The higher the rating, the greater protection offered, so you should always look for underwater devices with high IP ratings.

It is important to test your case before using it in deep water as some waterproof phone cases and pouches are meant to protect from rain or splashes as opposed to full water submersion. Some cases have a depth maximum where at a certain depth you have a specific time to use the case before the waterproof protections have a probability of failing. Be sure to look for a high IP rating when choosing your case and test the case at home before taking it on vacation.

Some waterproof phone cases and pouches come with a built-in lanyard that you can adjust around your neck or wrist for safe use in the waterIf you’re an experienced swimmer and have a waterproof phone case, you can bring it with you when swimming. However, if you are less experienced, you should leave your phone safely on the beach or poolside with friends (or in a safe storage locker, if available.)

Why Trust Travel + Leisure

Adrienne Jordan is a certified PADI Master scuba diver and snorkeler who frequently travels to tropical destinations to film both at surface level and underwater. She has used the Catalyst Case to film giant manta rays in the Maldives and has used various waterproof pouches on snorkel and boating adventures around the world. To cultivate this list, she interviewed Michael Clarke, Sandals Resorts International’s Corporate Director of Watersports and conducted in-depth research.

12 must-have features of a phone wallet case for travel

by Anne Betts | Feb 19, 2024 | Travel Tech , Packing Light Travel Gear | 9 comments

phone-wallet-case

Updated February 19, 2024

If you’re a carry-on traveller or light packer, chances are there are several multipurpose items on your packing list. Does that include a phone wallet case? If not, or you’re looking to upgrade your phone or a case, the following list of must-have features of a phone wallet case for travel  might help you in your search.

Table of Contents

What is a phone wallet case?

Benefits of a wallet phone case, 1. a secure fit, 2. attractiveness, 3. functional and secure, 4. the phone’s functionality isn’t limited, 5. easy access, 6. secure grip, 7. wireless charging compatibility, 8. durability, 9. screen protection, 10. lightweight, 11. rfid-blocking technology, 12. adhesive accessories, (i) phone tether tab, (ii) retractable coil, my favourite phone wallet case, special mention: folio phone wallet case.

A phone wallet case combines the functionality of a wallet and a protective cover for your phone. It contains one or more slots or pockets to house things normally carried in a wallet or purse.

Folio designs open like a book, providing protection to both the front and back of a phone.

Slim versions typically cover the back of the phone, and may have features offering minimal protection for the front.

The main benefit of a phone case  is to protect your phone from harm.

  • It offers protection from dirt, dust, pollution, germs, rainfall, and sun. It provides a measure of protection from damage from falls or scratches.
  • It can extend a phone’s working life.
  • It might increase resale value when upgrading.
  • Different designs and colours can add a touch of style, or changed to reflect one’s mood or wardrobe.
  • At a glance, it helps distinguish a phone from others.

A phone wallet case offers the compact convenience of not having to carry both a wallet and a phone. It can also act as a storage unit, or another place to stash emergency cash.

  • In the slot, pocket, or vault, carry an emergency contact card , a piece of ID, a financial card, and some cash when you don’t want to carry a wallet or purse. If you drive, it’s a convenient place to stow your driver’s licence.
  • At home or while travelling, carry a single bill to use in an emergency. It could come in handy when other payment methods aren’t accepted, or if a credit card terminal isn’t working. Make sure it doesn’t have any markings or damage, and is a currency and denomination that can be easily used or changed.
  • When inserting a local SIM card, tape your home SIM and SIM card remover tool to the inside of the cover. Or look for a thin holder with slots for SIM cards and a removal tool. With your home SIM and SIM card remover tool behind your phone, It will be at your fingertips as soon as you return to your home country. Chances are you’ll be connected to your home network by the time you reach the terminal.

12 Must-have features of a phone wallet case for travel

Chances are it will fit your phone if it’s rated for a specific make and model. Read the reviews from verified purchasers to make sure. The fit should be snug, but flexible enough for the case to be removed without much difficulty.

It looks good, but not so good that it’s a magnet for pickpockets and thieves. Without sacrificing durability and functionality, look for something inexpensive and unpretentious. Also, consider how it will withstand the rigours of everyday use. My first phone wallet case was a cheap case made of silicone. Unfortunately, ‘cheap’ translated into a tired, somewhat grimy look over time and an on/off button that took some persuasion to do its job.

It securely holds what you want to store behind the phone and within the pocket or slots. I once made a hurried  purchase of a Poetic Nubuck case. It featured a hidden slot with pull-tab access.

I don’t recommend this design. The slot and pull strap were made of leather that became more pliable with use. The day my driver’s licence slipped out and fell at my feet was the day I purchased my current phone wallet case’s predecessor.

wallet-phone-case-with-pull-tab

It allows complete access to the screen, camera, ports, and controls. Look for references such as “tactile click buttons” or “optimized button profile.” Grappling with hard-to-click buttons is annoying. So is wrangling a flap that can’t stay out of the way when taking pictures. Also, if you have an external battery with integrated charging cords, check that those cords are compatible with the case.

Credit cards and other financial and identity cards are easy to access, but not so easy that one could inadvertently fall out.

It needs to be easy to grip and hold. Look for a textured anti-slip surface and side grip.

It offers MagSafe compatibility for Apple devices or is compatible with your wireless charging pad, if you use one. Remove your financial and identity cards before charging. Otherwise, they might become unreadable after being subjected to electromagnetic induction.

It’s made of durable materials capable of absorbing shock on impact. Look for reinforced corner bumpers, or air-pocket corners that act as tiny airbags for your phone.

A raised bezel on the side grip offers a measure of protection for the screen. Folio cases invariably have a screen cover.

It shouldn’t add unnecessary bulk or weight. Check the specifications for the unit’s weight, and decide if it’s one you can tolerate.

Does it feature RFID-blocking technology? Some cases offer RFID-protection against electronic pickpocketing of identity and financial cards.

Do you use lost-and-found tags? If so, the surface needs to be a able to accommodate an adhesive tag. Do you use a phone tether tab? If you prefer one with adhesive backing, it needs to stick to the inside of the case.

Anti-pickpocket accessories

A phone tether tab is a handy little accessory that sits behind a phone in its case. The tab has an attachment point that protrudes through the charging slot, allowing a leash to be attached and tethered to a secure attachment point in a pocket, purse, or bag.

There are lots on the market. Mine is from COCASES .

When paired with another accessory, its main function is to prevent damage, loss, and theft.

Some travellers prefer to attach a lanyard to carry the phone around the neck, much like wearing a crossbody bag. My preference is to keep a phone out of sight as much as possible. A hybrid version of a combined lanyard and crossbody bag is a crossbody phone case .

I’ve experimented with various leashes and tether straps to attach a phone to a plastic O-ring sewn into a pocket or purse. On a recent trip to Africa, I used a retractable coil with a lobster claw clasp at each end. It worked beautifully.

One lobster claw clasp was attached to the phone tether tab and the other to an O-ring sewn into the lining in a corner of my crossbody purse. It was possible to grab the phone and close the zipper of my purse, almost completely. The retractable coil permitted using the phone to consult Google Maps or receive a call. An added advantage of this arrangement is that the phone remains attached to the bag at all times and is never placed on a tabletop to be stolen or left behind.

retractable-coil-tether-phone-wallet-case

After several missteps, I finally have something that works for me. It’s  a Smartish iPhone 14 Pro – Wallet Slayer Vol. 1 . It has a feature I like in a pocket — different sized openings on each side so a card can be pushed or pulled out of the card slot. At 40.8 grams (1.4 ounces), it’s built for packing light travel.

The pocket holds three items securely: a driver’s licence, laminated emergency contact card , and one financial card. A single bill for emergency use is kept inside the cover. For many years, I had the identical version for my previous phone, an iPhone X.

I’m not a fan of the folio design, but my spouse loves it on his iPhone 13. He likes the convenience of going wallet-free with enough slots for a driver’s licence, health card, financial cards, and a banknote. It’s an ICARERCASE iPhone 13 Premium Leather Wallet Case with a magnetic closure for the front cover when it’s not protecting the screen. It weighs 5.3 oz (150 g). Like me, it’s his second purchase. For many years, he had the identical version for his previous phone, an iPhone 7.

So handy for travel and at home as well.

Linda (LD Holland)

I must admit that I am always leery about using my phone case for a wallet. I have lost my phone more than once and would hate to lose the wallet too. But I do agree that it offers the convenience of not carrying a purse when you only need a few things. Cool idea to store the SIM remover there. I may have to check out a lost and found tag and try a wallet phone case.

Krista

My mum likes to use these type of wallet-cases, but I’ve never considered one. It can be a pain to carry your wallet and phone separately though, so I’ll definitely be looking into getting one for my next trip!

Hannah

Oh I love this post! Last year I switched to a phone case where I stuck a card pocket on the back (it wasn’t designed as a wallet one) but I can now just grab my phone when I leave the house, rather than rummaging for my purse. It’s so liberating and life-changing! I’m definitely going to look at the more robust wallet style ones you have recommended, I think they will come in handy when I next travel! Thanks for the great suggestions!

Nina Clapperton

Love this idea. Since most of my dresses that I love wearing travelling don’t have pockets and purses can be a target for pick pockets, I struggle to figure out where to put stuff. This wallet on your phone is perfect since my phone is always on me!

Geoff Thiele

As always, very useful information. I especially appreciated the tether suggestion and link. I lost 2! pairs of glasses out of my pocket in one trip on the bumpy roads in Mexico but fortunately not my phone. It would also be very useful when trying to use a phone on chairlifts. Regarding storage of credit cards, what about using Apple Pay?. In the US and Australia it seems to me very widely adopted, particularly since Covid

Anne Betts

Before discovering the tether tab, I would keep my phone in a zippered pouch with its sewn-in tether that I could clip to an attachment point inside a bag or a pocket. I prefer the tether tab for most situations.

Ah Yes, Apple Pay. I must start using this method of payment. As always, thank you for your comments, Geoff.

Bill

This is a very bad idea for travellers. If your phone is lost or stolen, your cards are lost and you have lost the ability to use Applepay or Samsungpay.

Hopefullly there will be a second card held securely away from the phone.

Zoe Henry

1. An ideal wallet phone case for travel should be made of durable material that can withstand wear and tear. 2. It should also be lightweight and compact, so that it can easily fit in a pocket or purse. 3. It should also have enough pockets or compartments to store essential items such as cards, cash, and other documents. 4. It should also have RFID blocking technology to protect personal information from being stolen. 5. Finally, it should have a secure closure to prevent items from falling out.

Universal Waterproof Phone Pouch

JOTO Universal Waterproof Phone Pouch

Waterproof Floating Pouch

Best Small Waterproof Phone Case

Case-mate waterproof floating pouch.

At the Good Housekeeping Institute , our tech experts and product analysts regularly test all types of phone cases , iPhone cases and accessories like portable phone chargers , solar phone chargers and much more. When selecting the best waterproof phone cases, we assessed popular picks for their ease of use, design and water-resistance after being dunked into a swimming pool. According to our tests, these are the best waterproof phone cases of 2024 to bring along on your next beach day or to your favorite water sports activity.

Whether you like to cruise down slopes or soak up the sun at an all-inclusive resort , pesky elements like sand, snow, dirt and water can get in between the cracks of your phone. To keep your device looking as good as new, our pros recommend this durable phone case from OtterBox brand, LifeProof. We like that not only is it waterproof, but it features a built-in screen protector and, according to the brand, can safely be dropped from at least six feet.

Testers were impressed with the case and how easy it is to assemble. “I think it’s an amazing case that’s lightweight yet protective,” says Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Analyst Grace Wu . “I could immediately tell it was high quality and it has protected my phone from both rain and accidental drops — it only has two scratches from when I dropped it on the asphalt!”

In previous Lab tests, our analysts were able to s ubmerge the FRE case in 6.5 feet of water for an hour without any incurred damage while successfully using the fingerprint sensor. While we love the case's sturdy, sealed design, our pros point out that it's a bit tricky to remove (you'll need a coin handy to pry it open) and the side switch that controls whether your phone is on loud or silent could be easier to adjust.

Sometimes you need an easy, inexpensive solution to protect you and your family's devices when at the lake, waterpark or pool . Look no further than the JOTO phone pouch, which is offered in a variety of fun colors to suit your style. According to the brand, this phone pouch is IPX8, meaning that you can comfortably take it with you into the water, and it comes with a detachable lanyard so you can hang your phone around your neck. If you own a larger phone you may need to remove your case, but most devices up to seven inches should comfortably fit inside, including the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Who said waterproof phone cases had to be boring? The experts at the GH Institute agree that this colorful phone pouch is a must-have for family vacations and all sorts of water sports . A Family Travel Awards winner , it’s not only super easy to pack but the lanyard keeps your phone where you want it.

We love that the two locking mechanisms stop water from getting inside, but even better is that the pouch floats should it slip into the lake. “It was fun to bring my phone into the water to take photos without having to worry about accidentally dropping it,” said one tester.

Pelican Marine Waterproof Phone Pouch

Marine Waterproof Phone Pouch

While our pros wouldn’t recommend this waterproof phone pouch for everyday use, it’s the perfect choice for someone going on vacation that needs extra protection when snorkeling, canoeing or participating in any watersports. All you have to do is pop in your phone, secure the sides and you’re good to go! Not only is this phone pouch waterproof, but it floats and comes with a detachable lanyard so you never lose track of your device.

According to the brand, it’s waterproof up to 3.3 feet and the XL size should fit most smartphones up to seven inches. Our pros love that it’s touchscreen compatible so you can text without removing the pouch (as well as take photos underwater!) and that there’s a large, clear film on the back so no matter what phone you use, your camera shouldn’t be blocked. With the XL size, you should have enough room to also stash a credit card or key inside if desired.

Catalyst Total Protection Case

Total Protection Case

Looking for a durable case to protect your iPhone from any spills, drops or accidents? Catalyst has waterproof phone cases for most iPhone models, which includes some of the older models as well as the latest iPhone 14. According to the brand, the case is IP68-rated and you should be able to safely submerge it underwater up to 33 feet.

Our pros found this case one of the easiest to take on and off, and we like that once the case is installed, all switches and buttons are easy to use — we especially like the case's upgraded design now features easy push buttons as opposed to a "rotating mute switch." In addition to a handy lanyard, this case includes a built-in screen protector for maximum protection. Just keep in mind that while this case is wireless charging compatible, it isn't MagSafe so you won't be able to use any MagSafe chargers with it.

Nite Ize RunOff Waterproof Pocket

RunOff Waterproof Pocket

These days, it's hard to leave all your tech gadgets behind. If you think you'll need room for a few extras on your next camping trip , consider this super versatile waterproof pouch. Not only does it have enough space for your phone, but you should be able to fit in AirPods , a passport and a phone charger .

While the zipper can feel a bit tricky to slide back and forth, our pros like that this pouch is IP67 rated and floats so you don't have to fret if it accidentally falls in the water or mud. It's also transparent so you can see what's inside and be able to check your phone's GPS or send a quick message thanks to touchscreen compatibility. But if you're looking for a case specifically for your phone that enables you to take photos without removing your device, consider this Nite Ize Runoff Waterproof Phone Case .

Kona Submariner Waterproof Phone Pouch

Submariner Waterproof Phone Pouch

Our experts found the Kona phone pouch super easy to use and carry around. Two clamps on each side are opened up by a quick maneuver , and detaching the lanyard is seamless when you're ready to store your pouch. According to the brand, it should be suitable for most phones up to 6.3 inches and waterproof up to 100 feet. Our pros were impressed with how easy it is to snap photos and navigate among apps through the pouch's clear film. Unfortunately, we did witness the pouch sinking when testing it in the pool, though the brand claims that it floats — just make sure to properly squeeze the sides when closing to trap excess air in.

How we test the best waterproof phone cases

linebreak

Each case featured in this roundup was tested for water-resistance claims by being submerged in a pool at one meter for 30 minutes. Our tech analysts then assessed each phone case or pouch for any water damage to devices, in addition to evaluating each model for its ease of use and design.

Over the past three years, analysts and engineers at the Good Housekeeping Institute’s Media and Tech Lab have evaluated more than 50 phone cases for criteria such as performance, water-resistance, durability and construction. To test durability, we drop test phone cases and assess any damage. To confirm wireless charging or MagSafe claims, we ensure that phones charge properly. To gather real-world feedback, we’ve had over 100 consumer testers use select phone cases for multiple days, evaluating each model’s ease of use and design — such as whether the phone case was easy to take on and off, comfortable to grip, nice to touch and more.

What to look for when shopping for the best waterproof phone case

✔️ Make sure your phone is compatible: Phone cases aren't one-size-fits-all. Before making a purchase, double-check that the phone case is compatible with your device and offers a secure fit. Also, make sure that all ports are open and accessible for easy charging, and if you want to use your phone's wireless charging, look for cases that support MagSafe or Qi wireless charging.

✔️ Check the IP rating: Check whether your phone case specifies an IP (ingress protection) rating, which indicates to what degree it can handle water exposure or submersion in addition to contact with other elements like dirt, sand, etc. The first number refers to solids while the second number refers to liquids; as a rule of thumb, the higher the number, the more protection you can expect. If you're worried about your phone falling into a lake or pool, our pros suggest looking at phone cases with IP ratings of IPX7 or higher. “An IPX7 rating means that the phone case is waterproof based upon a submersion test of up to one meter in water for 30 minutes,” says former Good Housekeeping Chief Technologist Rachel Rothman .

✔️ Test it before going in the water: Before throwing your waterproof phone case or phone pouch into the water, you should first test it out at home. Our experts suggest placing a piece of tissue paper or a paper towel inside the case or pouch, securing it and submerging it underwater in the bathtub or sink for at least 10 minutes to ensure that the paper comes out completely dry. Once you are ready to test out your waterproof case in open waters, make sure to pay attention to any guidelines. While a phone case might be waterproof for a certain amount of time and to a certain depth, you should never exceed that limit.

✔️ Is it easy to use? Make sure that it's easy to send messages, take photos or check Google Maps through the phone case or pouch. While most waterproof phone cases and pouches are touchscreen-sensitive, you should ensure that it's easy to operate your phone as you would without a protective phone case. You wouldn't want to struggle to take a beautiful photo of a coral reef underwater because your phone case won't cooperate. If you're interested in underwater photography, make sure that your camera lens remains clear when taking photos and not distorted or covered.

✔️ Double-check buoyancy and max water depth specs: A floating device is much easier to hunt down in a moving body of water than one that sinks straight to the bottom. If buoyancy is important to you, opt for a phone case or pouch that floats. But if you plan on taking your phone underwater, you may prefer to have a phone case that doesn't float and hinder you from comfortably using your device.

Is a waterproof phone case worth it?

A waterproof phone case is a great investment whether you're someone that spends a lot of time by the water or you want extra protection for your phone while around the house. Whether you're snorkeling, paddleboarding, fishing by the lake or washing the dishes, a waterproof phone case ensures that your phone doesn't risk any water damage should it accidentally fall into the water or another liquid. This is especially important as most phone manufacturers don't cover water damage in their warranties.

You may also be wondering: why bother with a waterproof phone case if you already have a waterproof phone? Even though many modern smartphones today are waterproof, keep in mind that they are only waterproof to a certain duration and depth before water damage becomes a risk. If you want to take photos of fish underwater, it's wise to add the extra protection of a waterproof phone case which also protects against harsher liquids like saltwater and chlorine.

Also, most waterproof phone cases and phone pouches protect your phone from other outdoor elements like sand, dirt, mud and more so you don't have to spend as much time cleaning your device down the line. Many even include handy extras like lanyards for easy portability and buoyancy so they float.

I went a week without using a case on my phone — here’s what I learned

It felt odd, but another unexpected problem arose

iPhone 14 Pro Max and Pixel 8 Pro without phone cases.

I did something recently that I haven’t done in over a decade — going a week without using a case on my phones. I think the last time I did that was pre-iPhone with my Motorola Q back in 2006, since it didn’t have a touchscreen that I was worried about getting ruined.

There’s no reason for this sudden change, but I just felt the urge to see what it felt like to not have a case on my phone. My reasons for using cases on some of the best phones I've reviewed haven’t changed over the years, mainly to protect them for everyday wear and tear, as well as those rare occasions when I clumsily drop them by accident. I know others use phone cases to hopefully get better trade-in values for their next phones , but I simply use them for protection.

Going naked with my phones felt weird at times, but a new problem arose that drives my point about why I will and continue to use phone cases. Here’s what I learned.

The weight is lifted

iPhone 14 Pro Max and Pixel 8 Pro without phone cases.

Right away, I instantly noticed how much lighter my phones were in my pockets. Yes, I’m one of those people who carries two phones on a daily basis — an iPhone 14 Pro Max and Pixel 8 Pro — but this is the life of a phone reviewer who is always chasing after that Android vs. iOS conversation. Since both were completely naked, I found it unbelievable at how I noticed that they weren’t as heavy.

Mind you, I simply don’t use any phone case, but rather, wallet cases that let me stow my driver’s license, metro card, a couple of credit cards, and a single bill when I need to pay cash. For example, my iPhone 14 Pro Max weighs 8.47 ounces, but having it inside of my Vena vCommute Pro case tacks on an additional 3 ounces — resulting in a total package of about 11.5 ounces in my pocket. That’s a lot of extra baggage, so ditching them definitely made my pockets feel much lighter.

Showing off their original design

iPhone 14 Pro Max and Pixel 8 Pro without phone cases.

Another refreshing change is how much more glances I got from strangers whenever I whipped out my Pixel 8 Pro in public. That’s because of its polarizing paint job, which stands out over the neutral colors we tend to get with today’s best phones. Without having a case on, the bright blue color of my Pixel 8 Pro certainly attracted a few prying eyes — which I suspect was due to its unique color.

But this brings me to my point about how going naked preserves the original design. Even though phone cases add that layer of protection, they often bury their designs so much so that they lose their identity. I’m often flattered when someone asks me about a phone I’m using, especially when it’s because of its color or unique look. I definitely notice more people taking notice of my phones now without cases on them.

I still need a wallet

iPhone 14 Pro Max and Pixel 8 Pro without phone cases.

Knock on wood, I’ve been good at handling my phones naked so far for over a week now — so I haven’t dropped either of them by accident. However, I soon realized by the fourth day that I had a big problem to deal with: finding a wallet to carry on me that would fit everything I need.

I thought about going back to a traditional wallet, but now I feel it’s a bit dorky to stuff my back pocket with one. So, I thought long and hard about how to solve this problem and ultimately decided to do the most practical thing. I ended up finding a couple of old MagSafe wallets I had in my desk drawer and decided to use them on both my phones.

Why carry yet another thing in my packets when I can just fasten them to my phones, right? Despite being added bulk, I think it’s a compromise because I’m able to condense my belongings while still retaining and showing off their designs. In fact, I was surprised that I was able to attach one of my MagSafe wallets to my Pixel 8 Pro — even though it wasn’t as firm as my iPhone. Regardless, I recommend using a MagSafe wallet if you end up not using a case. Here are some of my favorite MagSafe wallets.

ESR Magnetic Wallet: was $31 now $26 @ Amazon

ESR Magnetic Wallet: was $31 now $26 @ Amazon The ESR Magnetic Wallet is one of the most versatile MagSafe wallets because not only does it accommodate at least three cards, but it can fold in such a way to act as an iPhone stand — plus it features Apple’s Find My service to track it down in the event it’s lost much like an AirTag.

Peak Design Mobile Wallet Slim: now $49 @ Amazon

Peak Design Mobile Wallet Slim: now $49 @ Amazon If you have a lot of cards to carry with you, the Peak Design Mobile Wallet Slim accommodates more stuff than any other MagSafe wallet I’ve tested. It features a fabric design that has a pull tab that conveniently slides out all of the cards inside of the wallet.

Bellroy Mod Wallet: now $25 @ Amazon

Bellroy Mod Wallet: now $25 @ Amazon With its sophisticated look, the Bellroy Mod Wallet’s eco-tanned leather and flex polymer helps to balance out its utility and design. It’s on the slimmer side and doesn’t add a whole lot of bulk if you’re looking to keep a slimmer profile with your phone while carrying a wallet.

Bottom line

iPhone 14 Pro Max and Pixel 8 Pro without phone cases.

I’ve enjoyed my time going naked with my phones, but in all fairness, I’ll probably go back to using a case. Perhaps it’s because using a phone case has become my new normal, it still feels weird going without one. Or maybe I enjoy the extra grippy feel I get using them? Either way, I value how today’s phone cases do so much more than just protecting my phones — they’ve become my wallet as well.

If There’s a Death in Your Family, These Airlines Offer Discounted Fares

Discounted or flexible bereavement fares lessen the financial burden if you need to travel urgently due to the death of a close family member..

If you live far away from loved ones, you may need to book a last-minute plane ticket to attend a funeral in the future.

There are a great many things that need to be done after the loss of a loved one, and if you live far away, purchasing a flight is often one of them.

Because funerals typically happen shortly after someone passes away, the airline fares for getting there at the last minute tend to be high. While not a common practice, some airlines do offer bereavement fares, a type of discounted or flexible airline tickets provided to those who need to travel urgently due to the death (or imminent death) of a close family member. The fares are designed to ease the financial burden on passengers during a difficult time, offering some relief in terms of cost and flexibility in booking and travel changes.

Policies for bereavement fares vary from airline to airline, though typically, passengers need to provide proof of the bereavement situation, such as a death certificate, a statement from a hospital, or contact information for the funeral home.

Read on for which airlines in North America currently offer bereavement fares and what the requirements for qualifying are.

Alaska Airlines

For those mourning the loss of a loved one, Alaska Airlines offers 10 percent off the lowest available fare for your desired trip to all of its destinations, provided travel falls within seven days of the death. The flights are also available for flights operated on behalf of Alaska by Horizon or SkyWest.

The reduced fare is available to customers who have lost a spouse or domestic partner, parent, child, sibling, grandparent, grandchild, aunt, uncle, niece, or nephew. It also includes stepfamily members and in-laws that fall into those categories.

Unfortunately, the discount cannot be combined with other discounts, including miles or the once-a-year buy one ticket, get the companion ticket for just taxes and fees deal given to all Alaska Air–branded credit card holders. Travelers over the age of 18 must be Alaska Mileage Plan members and have their plan numbers added to their reservation. (Those age 17 and younger do not need to be Mileage Plan members to qualify for these fares.)

To book, call Alaska’s reservations line at 1-800-252-7522. The lower rate can only be applied to new tickets, so don’t try to book through the website first.

Air Canada also offers discounted bereavement fares (which vary case by case) for economy-class tickets worldwide. While travel must begin within 10 days of booking, the return can be anytime within 60 days, which could prove helpful if you’re handling the deceased’s estate.

To qualify, the departed needs to be a current or former spouse, child, parent, grandparent, great-grandparent, sibling, or legal guardian. This also includes step, half, and in-law versions of these relationships. You’ll also need to prove the loved one passed, through a copy of the death certificate, the funeral director’s or coroner’s statement, or a letter from the treating physician on official letterhead. That documentation needs to be emailed to [email protected] within seven days of the return flight, otherwise, you may be charged the full fare.

To book, you’ll need to call the customer service line for Air Canada at 1-888-247-2262.

Delta Airlines

Delta Airlines offers bereavement tickets on domestic and international flights when the deceased is an immediate family member. (Under Delta’s policy, that includes a spouse, domestic partner, child, parent, sibling or stepsibling, stepparent, stepchild, grandparent, grandchild, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, mother-in-law, father-in-law, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, brother-in-law, or sister-in-law). While the carrier doesn’t offer a discount, it does waive service and change fees on the itineraries, which may be helpful for those who anticipate changes to their travel plans.

To book these fares, passengers need to contact Delta’s reservations directly by phone (the fares aren’t bookable online) at 1-800-221-1212 for domestic or 1-800-241-4141 for international flights. You do need to be a member of SkyMiles (the free loyalty program for Delta) and will need to provide the deceased’s name, your relationship to them, and the phone number for the funeral home, hospital, or hospice.
