Unlike the country’s other west coast destinations that can have rough seas and rocky coastlines, this popular beach town nestled against Banderas Bay promises gorgeous, calm, swimmable waters and soft, golden sand beaches. Come for the stunning mountain views and laid-back beaches, and stay to explore the area’s indigenous Huichol history, colonial architecture, galleries filled with colorful art, and picturesque cobblestone streets.

Hotels here range from budget mom-and-pop joints to luxury all-inclusive resorts and boutiques. Puerto Vallarta’s central area consists of the lively and bustling Hotel Zone, the more quaint and quiet Romantic Zone, and the Marina Zone, a tucked away neighborhood by – you guessed it – the marina, offering easy access to golf courses, shopping, and spas. About 30 minutes north of town, you’ll find Nuevo Vallarta, a hotspot for all-inclusives and guests looking to take a swing at golf and seasonal whale and wildlife tours. Just south of Puerto Vallarta, off Highway 200, the South Zone edges along lush forest and jungle, giving visitors a far-flung vacation feel.

The all-inclusive industry is steadily growing – though it’s nowhere near as abundant as in destinations like Cancun – and new and reimagined resort properties are popping up fairly frequently, each with their own personality and pros and cons. Whether you’re looking for a family-forward resort packed with amenities and accessibility, an adults-only spot where you can really get the party going, or a relaxing, intimate boutique to disconnect, we’ve singled out our favorite Puerto Vallarta all-inclusive resorts based on what there is to do, the quality of services, all-inclusive value, and overall vibe. It’s an intimate all-suite property with a more personal and calmer vibe than the usual all-inclusive resort.

This is not a direct beachfront resort, but they do have a free shuttle service to their own private beach club around the corner.

Casa Velas offers travelers the flexibility of a comprehensive all-inclusive plan within a boutique resort setting. With its elevated Mexican hacienda architecture, green sprawl of landscaping, and overall intimate vibe, the adults-only Casa Velas manages to feel more like a shared estate than a typical all-inclusive. The 80 suites start out at a modest 463 square feet, topping out with an impressive 5,564-square-foot four-bedroom Penthouse Suite. Most suites feel like private villas with features like polished marble floors, private plunge pools or jacuzzis, and stocked minibars. Pillow menus, soft robes, and L’Occitane bath products keep stays feeling luxe, though the traditional warm color palette feels a little dated.

The all-inclusive plan also extends to one meal at one of the specialty restaurants at Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit, their five-diamond sister property, plus discounts at the adjacent 18-hole golf course, and access to Velas Vallarta, another sister property. On-site amenities include a fitness room, scheduled daily activities, and a spa. A possible dealbreaker? The resort is not on the beach – but they have their own private beach club, Tau Beach Club, just around the corner and offer free shuttle service, an included food and beverage service, and plenty of comfy spaces to laze in the sun.

Dreams Vallarta Bay Resort & Spa

All rooms feature floor-to-ceiling picture windows with views of Banderas Bay.

This family-friendly resort is one half of a two-property complex, which may feel large for some visitors.

Dreams Vallarta Bay Resort & Spa is a lively 327-suite all-inclusive resort built in 2012 and last renovated in 2018. Rooms keep things contemporary and warm with a variety of wood colors, clean and minimalist lines, and an elegant nod to traditional Mexican colonial decor. We love that there’s not a bad room in the house – every room has a balcony view of the ocean, with garden rooms adding swim-out pools to the mix.

The all-inclusive program covers 24-hour room service, daily stocked minibars, and orders from seven restaurants and five bars, including a swim-up bar. However, take note: this family-friendly resort non-reciprocally shares its amenities with nextdoor sister property, Secrets Vallarta Bay; Dreams guests 18 and up can purchase a day pass to the Secrets side for a flat fee per room. Most of the restaurants are on the Dreams side, which can make it busy at peak times.

There are a variety of activities to keep guests busy, including sports courts and three pools, plus snorkeling and kids club programming for tots to teens. Nightly entertainment can be loud and go late, but the 14,000-foot Pevonia Spa, with full-body treatments, a hydrotherapy circuit, and saunas, offers an ideal place to reset.

Hyatt Ziva Puerto Vallarta

A comprehensive all-inclusive rate, a private beach, and fun extras like a tequila sommelier raise the overall value.

This large resort also offers day passes for non-guests, adding to the congestion.

The Hyatt Ziva Puerto Vallarta is an all-inclusive beachfront resort with 335 contemporary, slightly stark junior suites and a great private beach area with soft sand and free kayaking. Suite layout, size, and decor stay pretty much the same, with the biggest differentiating factors being views and floor level. Picture windows bring in abundant natural light, and details like magnified makeup mirrors in the bathrooms and the sitting room’s large floor-to-ceiling mirror (full-body selfies are a cinch) give rooms a thoughtful touch.

One gripe is that the swim-up rooms at this family-friendly resort are only available for guests 18 and up. Club Level upgrades add perks like larger rooms in a dedicated Club Tower, access to exclusive spaces, upgraded in-suite minibars, and outdoor space with a personal hot tub or swim-up pool. Food options are solid and include items for gluten-free, vegetarian, and younger guests. We like that restaurants don’t require reservations, but note that they do require following a dress code. Still, there’s not a lot that isn’t covered in the rate, which makes for an easy trip. Beach cabana usage, trips to the spa’s hydrotherapy pool and body treatments, and any off-property excursions are optional extras. This is a family-friendly hotel with adults-only spaces.

Generously sized, suites start at a whopping 1,410 square feet and get as big as 3,940 square feet. Frette mattresses and pillows, a private balcony or terrace, a full kitchen, and in-unit laundry rooms come standard, while upgraded categories flex private demi-pools, expanded outdoor space, and better ocean views.

Stays here feel like big vacation homes, and the suite configurations make for easy but intimate group or family travel. Several pools, including two infinity pools, a rooftop bar, and scheduled daily activities and entertainment keep you busy, and great food and drinks are included at all dining and bar venues, such as the buffet, wine bar, and beach club. The available resort activities and entertainment have a noticeable focus on sharing Mexican culture.

It’s a huge property with nearly 350 suites that is better suited for families.

Located on 10 acres of Banderas Bay beachfront, Velas Vallarta Suites Resort is a comprehensive and well-manicured property that echoes the traditional all-inclusive amenities and concepts that rank above par. Families will find the highest value with inclusions like a superb Kids Club for ages 4 to 12 packed with themed enrichment activities, large family suites, and all-ages entertainment day and night (note: it can get rowdy).

Big pluses are how the resort integrates Mexican heritage throughout its programming and its EarthCheck Gold certification. In its 345 suites, Velas Vallarta uses updated Mexican hacienda decor featuring wood, dark iron, marble floors, and a sunny color palette with an occasional pop of color, though rooms can feel dated. All suites come with a full kitchen (studios have an efficiency kitchen), sitting/living room area, stocked minibars (beer is free, but needs to be requested), and outdoor space. Three restaurants (reservations are only required at the full a-la-carte eateries) and 24-hour room service keep food and drinks at the ready, and there are two dedicated bar spaces. Extra costs include the 18-hole Marina Vallarta Golf Club within a 10-minute walk, shuttle service to town, and treatments using organic products at the full-service, on-site AMET spa.

It’s actually located 20 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta in Riviera Nayarit.

Technically, Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit isn’t in Puerto Vallarta — but since it won a spot on our World’s Best Awards list in 2021 and 2022, and is only about 20 minutes from the Puerto Vallarta airport, we’d be remiss not to include it — especially since it ticks many boxes when it comes to all-inclusive Mexican resorts for families .

Grand Velas’ family-friendly features go above and beyond the usual kids programming to include a tiny tots spa menu, a dedicated baby concierge for setting up suites and guiding activities, and even a program to commemorate baby’s first haircut — all while maintaining an elegance for adults.

Accessibility features include suites with wheelchair-friendly widths and ramps throughout the property. This 267-suite property has spotless rooms, contemporary decor, and greets guests with welcome bottles of wine or mezcal. Between the extensive on-site sports courts, activities both on land and in the water, planned entertainment, gorgeous beach and pool area, plus the superlative spa and nearby 18-hole golf course, it’s sometimes difficult to decide what to do. Six restaurants and three bars serve up top-notch meals and drinks around the resort, and 24-hour room service is also available. Reservations are required for the three fine dining restaurants.

Garza Blanca Resort & Spa Puerto Vallarta

The resort does a great job of incorporating its stunning natural surroundings into its programming, even for kids.

Only house wines and spirits are covered in the all-inclusive rate, and the spa is located at nextdoor Hotel Mousai.

Located among 85 acres of surrounding jungle, Garza Blanca has distinct escapism vibes. The contemporary 156 suites start out with spacious at 633-square-foot Deluxe Rooms and grow as large as 4,214 square feet for a three-bedroom Panoramic Suite. Terraces with hammocks, ocean views, and stocked wet bars are the norm. Fine dining, an exceptional spa, and a gorgeous Blue Flag-certified beach keep relaxation and rejuvenation top of mind here, while included hikes inside the nature preserve, birdwatching, and kayaking and snorkeling tours present active ways to interact with the surrounding nature.

We give a special shout out to the kids club programming, which includes things like photography classes, hikes, and kid-themed entertainment. The resort also has access to TerraLuna, a hybrid shopping-dining-gardens compound. On the whole, everything here is top-notch with superb attention to detail, so you’ll feel like you’re getting a pretty good deal. However, we wish the all-inclusive rate covered more than just house wine and spirits. While the gym has enough TechnoGym equipment for a great workout (and yoga classes), this resort’s spa stands out with a hydrotherapy circuit and tech treatments.

Hilton Vallarta Riviera All-inclusive Resort

It’s a reliable all-inclusive resort with a calm, cove-sheltered beach.

The food is good but may not cut it for food-forward travelers.

The Hilton Vallarta Riviera All-inclusive Resort is a dual-tower beachfront property with a total of 444 rooms. It’s one of the larger resorts on the list with a dedicated adults-only wing and exclusive areas for guests that upgrade to Enclave rooms. Rooms and suites have an international brand standard look devoid of Mexican details, all with balconies, daily-stocked minibars, and Nespresso machines. Enclave rooms get lounge access to daily premium happy hours, upgraded Wi-Fi, breakfast service, and check-in service.

This resort does a nice job of covering all the all-inclusive bases with good accessibility and no surprise fees. Its four bars and eight restaurants offer a variety of atmospheres and international menus cater to a breadth of guest preferences. Since the resort is located within a pirate cove, the waters here are even more calm than usual, making it a great spot for getting into the water or trying out a water sport.

Fiesta Americana All-inclusive Resort & Spa

This Hotel Zone resort gets high marks for service and is our only recommended pick that allows up to two dogs.

It’s located in the heart of the Hotel Zone, so it has a busier, more touristy feel than more private locations.

The Fiesta Americana is a family-friendly all-inclusive with a bustling Hotel Zone location. The tourist-heavy location and number of on-site activities make it a lively choice with or without kids in tow. Originally built in 2015, the Fiesta Americana has a dated overall look but it has been well taken care of and recent 2021 renovations added balconies and contemporary furniture and decor to all rooms.

Most rooms are smaller than 400 square feet, and you’ll need to upgrade to a family room or high-level suite for over 450 square feet. Upgrades to Fiesta Club rooms get extras like free beachfront breakfasts, access to the infinity pool and views at the adults-only rooftop club, an exclusive restaurant, and resort discounts. Food options center around Mexican, Asian, and Italian, with the latter as an extra charge. Whether you're at the beach or pool, service is a standout, and the view from Sonne Club, the adults-only rooftop infinity pool and bar are hard to beat. This resort caters to families with all-ages activities and entertainment, family rooms, and kids club programming for ages 4 to 16.

Hotel Mousai is an adults-only favorite offering unlimited all-inclusive access to a handful of on-site and sister restaurants, bars, pools, activities, and a private beachfront. The property first debuted in 2014, adding the South Tower in 2021. Both the North and South Towers feature regular and corner suites, and Ultra-level suites offer an upgraded suite and resort experience. The decor is notably modern and edgy with polished metal and mirror accents, sharp angles, and abstract art, with the resort surroundings a stark contrast within the Garza Blanca Preserve’s verdant jungle.

Beach views are present, however distant, from various hotel spaces, but especially from each tower’s rooftop infinity pool, bar, and sun loungers. Reaching the beautiful private beach (and its free cabanas) are just a 10-minute walk or free shuttle ride away, while the high-tech, hydrotherapy treatments at Spa Imagine are conveniently property-adjacent. Restaurants focus on contemporary takes on international cuisines, and the all-inclusive rates cover eight venues, six within Hotel Mousai and two at Garza Blanca, and house wines and house premium spirits. Guests also have access to the TerraLuna hybrid shopping-dining-gardens complex.

Know Before You Go

Plan to pay more during high season.

As with most popular tourist destinations, hotel prices peak during the high season and offer better deals in the low season. Puerto Vallarta’s high season falls between December to April when the beachy location and sun appeal to winter-worn northerners. Luckily, the average temperature in Puerto Vallarta is somewhere in the ‘80s and ‘90s Fahrenheit all year round, meaning you won’t be sacrificing warm weather to take advantage of more budget-friendly rates.

Plan around hurricane season

If you do plan to take advantage of low season rates, be aware that Puerto Vallarta has a hurricane season from June to November. While it’s not usually as intense as storm season on the east coast of Mexico, it has picked up in recent years, notably in 2023 when Puerto Vallarta was pummeled by Hurricane Lidia. Many resorts, tourist attractions, and even the airport were forced to close — so if you’re traveling during hurricane season, make sure you book refundable rates and/or that your travel insurance will cover hurricane cancellations.

Knowing Spanish is a plus, but not necessary

Can’t speak Spanish? Don’t fret — Puerto Vallarta is a tourist destination, and almost everyone foreign travelers will interact with will speak English. This is especially true in tourist-forward areas like the Hotel Zone. That said, it never hurts to know a few phrases in the local language, and a simple gracias or por favor will go a long way.

Beaches are swimmable, despite the Pacific coast location

Beaches on the Pacific are often not suitable for swimming because of cooler water temperatures and larger waves, but Puerto Vallarta is an exception. Puerto Vallarta is located on Banderas Bay, which offers clearer waters, a swimmable temperature, and a gorgeous turquoise hue. Beaches in Puerto Vallarta swap out the fine white sands found on the east coast for a rockier coastline and larger-grain golden sands.

This All-Inclusive in Mexico Is Perfect for Multi-Generational Vacations

Dreams Bahia Mita

It can be quite a challenge to plan a family vacation when three generations are involved. The kids want activities and a fun kids club, and the parents and grandparents want good food and a relaxing vibe. I recently visited the all-inclusive Dreams Bahia Mita Surf & Spa Resort , and it ticked all those boxes and more. The property’s brand-new waterpark is the perfect spot for kids to enjoy some time in the sun, and I was particularly impressed by the plentiful and delicious food offerings—better than any other all-inclusive I’ve visited in Mexico.

The property is home to the Dreams (family-friendly) property, as well as Secrets (adults-only). This dual set-up is particularly great for multi-generational trips because grandparents could enjoy a peaceful room on the Secrets side, while families enjoyed the Dreams side. They are connected by walkways and quite close together, not like you are on separate properties. Secrets guests can use the full property, even the Dreams side, while kids are not allowed to use the Secrets side of the property. Parents looking for an adults-only meal can take advantage of the dining on the Secrets side for an additional fee.

The Waterpark at Dreams Bahia Mita

The new waterpark is tucked into the hill at the back of the property, allowing the central pool area between the Dreams and Secrets buildings to remain more relaxed and serene. Families can walk up to the waterpark or grab a ride on a golf cart if they are lugging lots of gear.

A smaller water play area with a fun pirate ship theme is perfect for little ones. Just above this play area is a pool with three waterslides that even parents will enjoy.

You don’t have to pack up the kids when they get hungry, as there are plenty of options in this part of the property. Bahia Bites serves up fresh-made tacos from a cute taco truck, and you can enjoy kid-friendly pizza, burgers, and other foods from the snack station. Parents can enjoy a frozen beverage from the bar, and everyone will love Sundaez, the ice cream stand located right by the upper pool.

Between the Dreams and Secrets buildings, you will find the main pool area with lots of different areas where you can spread out your towel or snag a shady spot under an umbrella. The property was at capacity when I visited, but I never felt like I needed to stake out a lounge chair like you have to do at other all-inclusives. There’s a smaller waterslide in this part of the property, and activities like aqua zumba are happening throughout the day. Secrets guests have their own adults-only pools, one with a swim-up bar.

Dining at Dreams Bahia Mita

I was particularly impressed by the quality of the culinary offerings at Dreams Bahia Mita, as most all-inclusive resorts that I’ve visited do not shine in this area. In addition to 24-hour room service, plenty of casual dining options allow you to pick up tacos or burgers just a short distance from the central pool area.

World Cafe is the buffet option on the Dreams side, and it was quite impressive in its own right. Kids Korner is where you can find cute pancakes in the shape of animals and plenty of options for picky palates. Grab an omelet from the hot food station or fill up on all the fresh fruit that was always available. This spot is open for all three meals, making it super convenient for families.

If you send the kids to the Explorers Club for the evening, parents can enjoy adults-only dining on the Dreams side at Portofino, an Italian restaurant where I had one of my favorite meals of the trip. Other dining options include a Pan-Asian restaurant with a teppanyaki experience and restaurants serving grilled entrees and fresh seafood. Two additional restaurants will be opening near the waterpark in the near future.

Accommodations at Dreams Bahia Mita

There’s plenty of room for families to spread out in the rooms at Dreams Bahia Mita. The junior suites sleep up to four guests, two on a pull-out couch. You can book the family suite for up to seven guests, which connects two junior suites. This is the ideal option for families as parents and kids have their own separate spaces. Families can book rooms at the top of the property near the waterpark or in the main area of the property closer to the ocean.

Things to Do at Dreams Bahia Mita

Dreams Bahia Mita is located in Riviera Nayarit, just 45 minutes from the Puerto Vallarta airport. I liked that there weren’t a lot of other properties in this area, as it felt more secluded and tranquil than places I’ve stayed in Puerto Vallarta. While you’ll likely be spending most of your time in the property’s many pools, there’s a bit of sand for those who enjoy listening to the waves crashing. Surfing lessons were offered during my stay, though the beach is pretty rocky and not great for swimming, especially for kids.

Kids ages 3-12 can enjoy the Explorer’s Club during your stay. Daily activities included dance parties, crafts, video game sessions, and even a pajama party in the evening. If you want an adult-only dinner, kids can have their dinner at the club and watch a movie afterward. For older kids, there’s a Teen Club where teens can play pool or foosball or just hang out in one of the pods.

Every night, the property had a family-friendly performance or activity for guests. No-cost casino night was a favorite, and there were always DJs and musicians keeping the energy up. Download the property’s app to keep up to date on activities.

Adults looking for a bit of relaxation during their stay should book some time in the Secrets Spa . I had a lovely massage there, but the highlight was the hydrotherapy circuit, where I rotated through the steam sauna, hot pools with jets, and a cold plunge. Relaxing and invigorating at the same time!

If you want to venture off-property for an afternoon, the colorful beach town of Sayulita is just a short drive away. Here, you can enjoy a large beach, lots of boho shopping, and restaurants. You can also book snorkeling excursions, a sunset sail, or a whale-watching tour through the Amstar desk at the property.
