Think of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and you probably think of cowboys, mountain views, and skiing. While all of this is part of Jackson Hole, the area has so much more to offer as well!

With easy access to two of America’s most popular national parks , quaint towns, and a natural setting that’s ideal for loads of outdoor activities, Jackson Hole is one of the most fun travel destinations for family vacations in the U.S. And it’s an equally great vacation destination in winter as it is in summer.

Jackson Hole, which is actually a valley comprised of the towns of Jackson, Teton Village, Wilson, and others, has been playing host to tourists practically since it was established. Shortly after Jackson became the only incorporated town in the valley in 1919, dude ranches and other places appealing to those hoping to appreciate some of the area’s natural beauty began cropping up.

Today, approximately 2.6 million people visit Jackson Hole every year. Yet, a visit to the area still feels like a trip designed to appreciate nature. And, because of that, it can be a true family adventure vacation .

Good to know: We only visited Jackson Hole shortly on our way to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks . However, a fellow travel blogger Candi from Castles and Carpools family travel blog has recently spent more than a week in Jackson Hole with her family.

In this article, she shares some of the very best things to do in Jackson Hole and their experience-based tips for your trip to Jackson, Wyoming. Take a look!

In order to help you orient and plan your trip to Jackson Hole, we also created a map of the best places to visit and the main Jackson Hole attractions.

It’s not possible to indicate every activity or hike, but at least it gives you an idea of where most places of interest are located. If you stay in Jackson Hole, you can visit most places and do most activities as a day trip.

At the bottom of this article, we also include some tips for where to stay in and near Jackson Hole .

How to use this map:  Use your computer mouse (or fingers) to zoom in or out. Click on the icons to get more information about each place. Click the arrow on the top left corner for the index. Click the star next to the map’s title to add it to your Google Maps account. To view the saved map on your smartphone or PC, open Google Maps, click the menu and go to ‘Your Places’/’Maps’. If you want to print the map or see it in a bigger window, click on ‘View larger map’ in the top right corner.

Here are the best places to see and things to do in and near Jackson Hole:

1. Jackson Town Square

Visiting the Town Square and the surrounding downtown was one of our family’s favorite things to do in Jackson Hole.

The Town Square refers to the park with the iconic arched elk antler entryway that is often found in pictures of the area. It encompasses some green space for the kids to run, park benches, and a veteran’s memorial.

The Town Square is surrounded by great shops , inviting restaurants , and interesting art galleries . We found fantastic souvenirs in the many stores and had some delicious food in the restaurants. We also went on a covered wagon ride and saw the performance of the Jackson Hole Shootout , the 6-night-a-week reenactment of frontier justice (a must-do!)

TIP: Stop by the local farmer’s market in the Town Square on Saturday mornings for local produce, products, and a great atmosphere.

2. Grand Teton National Park

Just a few miles from Jackson Hole, you’ll find Grand Teton National Park . Often regarded as one of the most scenic national parks in the U.S., Grand Teton is a destination in itself. There is so much to see and do! The park offers stunning mountain scenery and is home to a wide variety of wildlife .

Start your tour of the park at the Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center . This is a great place to learn about the land as well as the history of the area. Ranger-led programs, exhibits, and a short movie paint a picture of what the Teton Mountains have meant to Native Americans and mountaineers of the past and the challenges for the future.

A self-guided walk through the Menors Ferry Historic District gives you a chance to step back in time. You can visit cabins, a general store, a ferry, and a building that houses wagons and coaches from the homestead era.

Make sure to also visit Mormon Row . It’s here that you will find the most iconic sceneries of the park – the Moulton Barns with Teton mountains in the background. The barns are relics from a fascinating time of the park’s history when Mormon settlers first came to the area. Other historic sites include the Chapel of the Transfiguration , Cunningham Cabin , and the Luther Taylor Cabin .

TIP: There are various guided tours to Grand Teton NP from Jackson Hole. They can help you make the most of your visit, especially if you are short on time and want to make sure that you don’t miss any of the best places.

3. Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Snow King Mountain, or Grand Targhee

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Snow King Mountain, and Grand Targhee are three Jackson Hole ski resorts . They are part of what keeps travelers coming back to this part of Wyoming in the winter. But there’s no snow needed in order to have fun here. Visiting these mountain resorts is one of the best things to do in Jackson Hole in the summer months too.

Snow King Mountain is located right in Jackson. It’s a great destination for all kinds of outdoor activities for the whole family. Big and little adventurers will enjoy the labyrinth maze, rock climbing, tandem paragliding, Cowboy Coaster, Alpine Slide, ropes course, and bungee trampoline. Even the less adventurous among your crew will like the mini-golf course or a ride on the scenic chairlift. In winter, you can go skiing or snow tubing here.

Jackson Hole Mountain is the largest of the three resorts and is located in Teton Village. In addition to some of the same activities offered at the other places, the highlight of a trip here is a ride on the tram or gondola . They both run in summer and in winter and transport you to the mountain peaks with sweeping views of the valley below.

The 6-person Bridger Gondola travels to an elevation of over 9,000 feet during a 12-minute ride. There are three restaurants at the top. The 40-person aerial tram takes you yet another 1,000 feet higher for spectacular views and, very likely, a chance to walk in the snow even in the summer.

You can find more info and get your tickets for these aerial trams here .

At about 1hr drive, Grand Targhee is the farthest ski resort from downtown Jackson. It also offers golf, disc golf, a bungee trampoline, a climbing wall, and a chance to explore gemstone mining at the Grand Targhee Mining Company.

TIP: Riding the aerial tram was another one of our kids’ favorite things to do in the Jackson Hole area. However, those in your group with a fear of heights might want to skip this activity. Kids will also love the high-ropes course .

4. Hiking or Biking

One of the most popular things to do in the Jackson Hole area in summer is hiking . But even though it’s a popular activity, it’s usually not difficult to avoid the crowds. Jackson Hole has a lot of fantastic hikes and finding a trail away from the crowd is quite easy.

The mountain resorts mentioned above as well as Grand Teton National Park offer trails for all levels of hikers. In fact, Grand Teton NP has more miles of separated hiking pathways than any other national park in the United States.

The names of the trails or landmarks – Paintbrush Divide, Cascade Canyon, and Inspiration Point , just to name a few – are just one of the clues to the magnificence of the scenery you can expect to find here.

Jackson Hole has also become a mecca for biking in recent years. Some of the same areas that are great for hiking are also perfect for biking. You can also access biking trails via a ski lift at Jackson Hole Bike Park, located at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in Teton Village. From young kids to skilled mountain bikers, there’s something for every level of a biker in Jackson Hole.

TIP: A bear spray is a good idea when hiking in this area, especially if you plan to find a more isolated trail.

5. Whitewater Rafting

Jackson, WY also offers some great water activities. If visiting the area in summer, be sure to add whitewater rafting on the Snake River to your list of things to do in Jackson Hole!

The Snake River is rated a class III river, making it navigable by a wide variety of rafters. Many rafting companies take families with children as young as 6, while others require them to be at least 12.

Rafting trips last from a few hours to most of the day, with some excursions offering lunch as well. Expect chilly but refreshing water, generally in the mid-60s (18-19°C) in July and August.

Here you can find some of the best whitewater rafting tours in Jackson Hole . Some rafting trips are very easy-going and family-friendly – see also the floating trips section below.

TIP: Don’t forget to pack water shoes if you plan to go whitewater rafting. You need to bring shoes that can get wet and won’t fall off your feet, so flip-flops won’t work.

6. Scenic Float Trips

If you are not interested in paddling through rapids, but still want to get out on the water and enjoy the scenery, then consider a scenic float trip. There are organized float trips on Snake River or you can opt to head to one of several lakes near Jackson Hole.

Floats on inner tubes, a wooden drift boat, a raft, or a stand-up paddleboard offer great vantage points to appreciate the grandeur of the mountains and possibly glimpse wildlife. Outfitting companies provide guided float trips lasting from several hours to all day. Or if you prefer to charter your own course, you can rent equipment in town.

The good thing about organized float trips is that they are very relaxing and are suitable for almost all ages. Even kids from about 4 years can participate. Take a look at this family-friendly floating tour !

Motorized boat rentals are also available in the local waterways. The largest and most popular lake for boating and other water activities in Grand Teton National Park is Jackson Lake. Or head to Jenny Lake, where you’ll find rangers who can help you plan your day on the water and nearby trails, additional marinas, and equally spectacular views.

For boat rentals southwest of Jackson, head 37 miles to Alpine, Wyoming. There, you’ll find the Palisades Reservoir at the end of Snake River Canyon.

TIP: The Jenny Lake Boat is available for those who want a short, 15-minute shuttle ride to enjoy the beautiful scenery. You can either do it as a short scenic tour or hop off for a hike as well. The ferry carries visitors across the water from the southern point of Jenny Lake to Cascade Canyon.

7. Yellowstone National Park

Although Yellowstone National Park can be a separate vacation in itself, you can also visit Yellowstone with a day tour or by booking an overnight trip from Jackson Hole. Either way, Yellowstone is one of the best places to visit near Jackson Hole, so don’t miss it!

The south entrance of Yellowstone is located 57 miles (90km) from Jackson. Driving time from Jackson to Upper Geyser Basin (Old Faithful) is approximately 2 hours; to the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone – about 2.5 hours. Within a full day, you can definitely see some of the main landmarks of Yellowstone .

Several companies offer guided tours of Yellowstone that depart from Jackson. Having an experienced company do the planning for you when you have limited time can be a great way to make sure you get the most out of your Yellowstone day trip!

8. National Elk Refuge

National Elk Refuge is an almost 25,000-acre wildlife refuge. It was created over a hundred years ago in order to provide a sanctuary for many elk living in this area.

If you’re hoping to see elk at the refuge, visit between mid-December and the first week of April. In winter, there are plenty of elk around and you can take a horse-drawn sleigh ride for a unique way to see the land and the animals that inhabit it.

If you visit Jackson Hole in winter , an excursion to National Elk Refuge is an absolute must! If you want to see other wildlife, you can also opt for a shorter, half-day wildlife safari tour at the Grand Teton National Park.

Although you won’t see elk here during the summer months, the National Elk Refuge is still a great stop on your Jackson Hole trip in the summer as well. The elk herd makes its way to higher ground but songbirds, ducks, geese, trumpeter swans, blue herons, and other birds can be spotted at the refuge in the warmer months. And you can still learn a great deal about the huge elk herd during a summer visit.

The best part of our visit to the National Elk Refuge was having the opportunity to talk to the staff who work there and viewing some of the items on display. Visitors can also hunt and fish at the refuge during certain times of the year.

9. Horseback Riding

One of the best ways to experience the western culture of the Jackson Hole area is to visit a ranch and go horseback riding.

Local ranches offer horseback riding excursions that are available in the form of half-day, full-day, or multi-day trips. There are many great places to go horseback riding around Jackson Hole, but for the most scenic rides head in the direction of the Teton Mountains. Most outfitters require children to be at least 5 to 7 years old but welcome riders of any level.

Heart Six Ranch , located north of Jackson Hole in Moran, is one of the very best options for a horseback riding adventure with the best views. You can opt to stay at the ranch , but you can also simply come for a horseback riding tour and enjoy the stunning scenery of the Tetons in a unique way.

TIP: Don’t forget to pack long pants or jeans as well as closed-toe shoes as they’ll be required for a horseback riding excursion.

10. Local Museums

If you love learning about the history of the area, a visit to the Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum is a great way to get acquainted with the history of this region. The museum is divided into two parts. One part is devoted to Native Americans indigenous to the area and the other to the settlers who arrived later. Both give a fascinating insight into the people who shaped the valley.

Art lovers will appreciate the more than 5,000 pieces of art representing animals from around the world at the National Museum of Wildlife Art . Works from prominent artists like Andy Warhol and John James Audubon are displayed here. Collections depict the history of wildlife in art, from 2500 B.C. to the present.

And don’t let the words “art museum” scare you away from bringing the kids here. This museum also houses a children’s area. Kids can create their own art, see a life-size diorama, try on animal costumes, play in a puppet theater, and curl up in a reading nook. You can get the tickets for this museum here .

Those with young kids will also want to visit the Jackson Hole Children’s Museum for some interactive playtime. Exhibits include the Wild Wind Machine, Innovation Wall, and Mountain Market.

11. Chuckwagon Dinner and Show

One of the most entertaining ways to have a memorable evening is by going to a chuckwagon dinner in Jackson Hole.

Chuckwagon dinners are reminiscent of the way they were done in the Wild West. The food is served outside and with entertainment provided, this is a fun way to experience the culture that shaped the valley. You listen to music and hear tall tales, all while enjoying a hearty meal.

TIP: Some chuckwagon dinners take guests on a covered wagon ride to another location to eat, while others are stationary restaurants. Decide which option is for you before you embark on your culinary adventure.

Chuckwagon dinners can be found in the beautiful Cache Creek Canyon in Jackson. Heart 6 Ranch and Bar-T-5 Covered Wagon Cookout are among the best experiences in the stunning scenery, and there are also a few other places.

Additional rodeos are held on Friday nights throughout July and August. A special rodeo is hosted annually after Labor Day to support the Shriners Hospital for children. 14. Hot Air Balloon or Helicopter Flight

If you are looking for something really special to do in Jackson Hole, then you may want to consider air tours . It’s an amazing way to experience the beauty of the Jackson Hole area and the Grand Teton National Park from above!

You can opt for a sunrise hot air balloon tour and there are also helicopter tours. Helicopter travels faster, covers bigger distances, and also flies over the mountains. Whereas hot air balloons will cover smaller distances and you’ll be able to enjoy the scenery slower and sometimes you can even see wildlife from above. It’s also much cheaper than helicopter tours.

While very different, both these experiences are absolutely unique and you really can’t go wrong with either of them! And since these tours take just about an hour, it’s very easy to fit them into any itinerary when visiting Jackson Hole.

A fly fishing excursion in Jackson Hole is actually one part world-class fishing and one part a scenic float trip.

Fly fishing in Jackson Hole is ideal for both experienced fishermen as well as first-timers. The summer season runs from June well into the fall, but book your trip early because that’s also a popular time to go.

Your best bet is to book an outing with a local fly fishing company . Expert fishermen will then take you to one of the many great spots to cast your reel.

Some options include the Snake River in Jackson Hole, south of Jackson on the Green River, the Henry’s Fork section of the Snake River or Palisades River in Idaho, Flat Creek on the National Elk Refuge, or the streams and lakes in Grand Teton National Park.

TIP: Fly fishing is a fun activity for older kids or teens who enjoy spending a least half a day on a small boat. But it’s probably not ideal with younger kids who can’t sit still.

If you’re looking for a campground for tent camping, check out Jenny Lake, Gros Ventre, Lizard Creek, or Signal Mountain campgrounds. For RV camping, check out Headwaters Campground at Flagg Ranch or Colton Bay Campground.

Where to Stay in Jackson, WY

There are so many nice places to stay in the Jackson Hole area . There are numerous hotels in Jackson town itself and lots of nice accommodations nearby (see an overview on Booking.com or on Expedia ).

Depending on what you are planning to see and do, you may want to stay in town, at one of the ranches, go glamping, or camping. Or you can also choose several different accommodations in several areas and save yourself some driving each day. The possibilities are endless…

Further below, you can read about our experience and where we stayed. And here are a few of the most popular hotels in Jackson, WY:

  • $$$$ Rustic Inn Creekside Resort & Spa – a lovely resort in a wonderful location – one of the nicest hotels in the area.
  • $$$ Wyoming Inn of Jackson Hole – a beautiful 3-star hotel that offers great price/value.
  • $$ Mountain Modern Motel – a very popular lower-budget option.

Where we stayed

We spent more than a week in Jackson Hole and also close to Yellowstone and stayed in a couple of different places.

I spent a ton of time comparing accommodations in Jackson town with the resorts at Teton Village. And then when we were there, I visited a few of the Teton Village resorts. For a summer trip, I was glad that we opted to stay downtown for the biggest part of our trip because it allowed us to split up our time a little more easily.

This is where we stayed in Jackson Hole and nearby:

  • White Buffalo Club in Jackson town. We spent the biggest part of our vacation here and really liked this hotel. We stayed in the suite for a while and then moved to 2 rooms for one night because the other family left a day earlier than us. We thought it was great – not just location-wise, but the hotel itself as well.
  • Headwaters Lodge at Flagg Ranch . Located just 2 miles from the south entrance of Yellowstone and just near Grand Teton NP, this was actually my least favorite place. It seemed really pricey for the quality of the accommodations. You’re paying for close proximity to Yellowstone though and the scenery is beautiful.
  • Under Canvas Yellowstone . We LOVED this accommodation and wished we would have stayed longer. It also has a great location for visiting Yellowstone!

Editor’s note: When we visited Jackson, we stayed at The Lexington at Jackson Hole and we can recommend it as well. The location is very central and you can walk to shops and restaurants in town. Furthermore, they have spacious parking and an indoor pool, and the rooms are really nice too. This upper-mid budget hotel is perfect for a short stay, but also for a longer holiday in Jackson Hole.

National parks and Wild West towns: great day trips from Jackson Hole

There’s enough to do in Jackson Hole to keep you busy for weeks at a time – and most visitors use the valley as a home base to explore the wider area, too.

Two of America’s most famous national parks are within 60 miles of Jackson Hole, and the history of the American West feels omnipresent in the region. Here are the top four day trips for visitors to Jackson Hole.

Visit the Wild West town of Cody

Why go? To see a Western-movie fantasy come to life.

Founded in 1896 by William F. Cody, known to millions of 19th-century Americans as “Buffalo Bill” of the popular traveling Wild West show, Cody, Wyoming is essentially a Western film set come to life. Cody is surrounded on three sides by mountain ranges – the Absarokas, the Bighorns, and the Owl Creeks – and lies just 53 miles east of Yellowstone (practically next door in this part of the world). The town was developed to salute the lives of cowboys and mountain men; today, that Wild West fantasy feel still prevails.

Featuring five museums in one, the  Buffalo Bill Center of the West introduces visitors to the life and times of the larger-than-life showman and offers an intimate look at life on the frontier. One of most enlightening and enlivening museums within the complex is the Plains Indian Museum, which houses a nationally recognized collection of art and objects created by the Crow, Blackfeet, Cree and other peoples whose land this region belonged to prior to colonization. Curated with the help of contemporary tribal historians, the museum seeks to be a living and ever-changing center of art and culture. One of the museum’s most fascinating exhibits is the interactive Plains Indian map project, which depicts the movements of more than 45 Indian tribes and cultures that made the American Plains home over a period of more than 230 years. Pause the animation at any point in the timeline to see how territorial, reservation and state boundaries changed as the result of colonization, treaties and flat-out land grabs.

At the Center’s Draper Natural History Museum, three lively interactive exhibitions bring the wildlife, geology and landscapes of the region to life. The Center’s other museums include the Cody Firearms Museum, which showcases the most comprehensive collection of American firearms in the world including the Winchester Arms Collection, and the Whitney Western Art Museum, housing a collection of 18th-, 19th- and 20th-century landscapes and depictions of life on the frontier, many of them fanciful and some presenting dated and disturbing interpretations of westward expansion and conflicts with the indigenous people who lived there.

A livelier introduction to life on the frontier comes with a visit to Old Trail Town and the Museum of the Old West, a collection of 26 log buildings brought together from various settlements, including blacksmith and woodworking shops; the cabin hideouts used by Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid, and their outlaw Hole-in-the-Wall Gang; and a barn full of pioneer wagons.

Those interested in the history of the Mormon pioneers who settled the Big Horn Basin will appreciate the Cody Mural and Museum, with a slightly surreal mural depicting the immigrants’ wagon trains and exhibits depicting the rugged life they faced upon arrival in the Big Horn Basin.

Cody Calls itself the Rodeo Capital of the World, and the culture of bull riding and calf roping is still alive and kicking here. The Cody Nite Rodeo , celebrating more than 80 years of operation, runs every night from June 1 through Labor Day weekend. Sheridan Avenue, Cody’s main street, continues the cowboy vibe with old-timey saloons and restaurants along with shops selling handmade saddles, cowboy boots, and silver jewelry.

No visit to Cody is complete without a visit to the Irma Hotel , opened seven years after the town’s founding and named for Cody’s youngest daughter Irma. Take a seat – and take in the ambiance – at the original cherrywood bar, gifted to Bill by his number one fan, Queen Victoria of England, who was entranced by his Wild West Show during her Golden Jubilee and began a lifelong friendship with the West’s greatest promoter.

An aerial view of steam rising from the Grand Prismatic Geyser in Yellowstone National Park

Tour Yellowstone National Park

Why go? To get up close and personal with one of world’s most fascinating wild places.

Rainbow-hued mineral springs, boiling mud pots, spouting geysers and spitting fumaroles: these geothermal mysteries lured 19th-century explorers to document a mysterious and dramatic landscape they described as a “hell.” These naturalists urged the government to preserve the area as Yellowstone National Park , establishing the national park system in the process.

Also designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Yellowstone preserves 10,000 hydrothermal features – more than half of all the geysers in the world. Among these, of course, is Old Faithful , the world’s most famous geyser, which erupts every one to two hours and sends water as high as 180 feet in the air. Underneath all of this, the geothermal forces that created Yellowstone continue to exert their power: scientists now believe Yellowstone sits atop one of the largest super volcanoes in the world, one that might be more active than previously thought.

While mud pots and geysers like Grand Prismatic Spring and Artist Paint Pots may provide you with your most spectacular photographs, there’s much more to do in the 2.2-million-acre park. See the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone with its Upper and Lower Falls; marvel over the travertine terraces of Mammoth Hot Springs; and leave plenty of time to look for wolves in the meadows and moose in the forests and stop your car to yield to bison slowly crossing the road. As part of the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the park’s founding in 2022, the National Park Service has instituted a process of engagement with the 27 associated tribes that maintain historical and cultural connections with the park, resulting in increased programming to celebrate indigenous history and culture in the area.

The clear water and stony bottom of Jenny Lake agains the backdrop of the Grand Teton peaks

Explore Grand Teton National Park

Why go? To see the stunningly jagged peaks of the Teton range.

Almost contiguous with Yellowstone to the south, Grand Teton National Park is all about the Teton peaks and the best places to view and explore their jagged, snow-capped splendor. With most of the park’s must-see attractions strung along the north-south artery of Teton Park Road (open May through October only), many visitors make the mistake of stopping at a few viewpoints, then checking the park off the list. While you’ll certainly want to pull over at Albright View, Glacier View, Snake River Overlook and Willow Flats Overlook, all of which provide a different silhouette of white-capped Teton spires against the sky, the park has much more to offer.

Take a pause to picnic at Colter Bay on Jackson Lake and watch the fly fishers throw in a line along Oxbow Bend, but save your longest stop for Jenny Lake , where a ferry waits to whisk you across the water for the one-mile trail to Hidden Lake and Inspiration Point. If you’ve got enough time, skip the ferry trip back and return via the trail around the lake. Detour very slightly to Moose Pond and you just might catch the marshy waterway’s namesake foraging along the shore or even watching over a baby among the reeds.

A hike to a pristine mountain lake is among Grand Teton’s National Park’s great pleasures. An easy one for all ages is the 1.8-mile round trip to String and Leigh Lakes, which are peacefully off the radar of most park visitors. You’ll see more crowds on the five-mile trek to Bradley and Taggart Lakes, both popular with photographers for their mirror reflections of Grand and Middle Teton.

A cowboy on horseback leads another horse in front of a historic barn and the snow-capped Grand Tetons in Mormon Row

Visit Mormon Row and Lower Slide Lake

Why go? To photograph the bison.

Follow the Gros Ventre River northeast from Jackson through the lush Antelope Flats to reach Lower Slide Lake in the Bridger-Teton National Forest. A short detour north takes you to Mormon Row , a historic site within the bounds of Grand Teton National Park that was once the settlement of Grovont. Today, all that remains are a handful of homesteads featuring picturesque barns whose rugged loneliness against the backdrop of the mountains makes them sought-after by photographers. A herd of more than 700 bison calls this valley home, so your chances of a good photograph of the beasts are high.

Another 30 minutes in the car takes you to Lower Slide Lake, where a boat ramp offers easy access for kayaks, canoes, paddle boards and row boats. Stocked with trout for those eager to fish, the lake is stunning in the fall when the cottonwoods and aspens ring the shore with gold. A short interpretive trail explains local geology, in particular the massive landslide that formed the lake. Continue along and past the lake to find several pretty campgrounds and numerous trailheads providing access to the surrounding Bridger-Teton National Forest.

FIRST TIMER’S GUIDE: A COMPLETE JACKSON HOLE ITINERARY FOR FALL (DOWNLOADS, MAPS & MORE!)

To be honest with you I had never really paid attention or even thought of visiting the town of Jackson, Wyoming until we planned out our Yellowstone/Grand Teton. Nor did I ever think I would be writing a Jackson Hole itinerary for you, but here I am.

Small town of Jackson, Wyoming

My husband was actually the one who requested spending a day in Jackson. To be honest, at first, I wasn’t stoked on the idea. I wanted this trip to be about RV life and hiking.  However, I am so glad we spent a day in Jackson.

With that being said I wanted to share our complete one day Jackson Hole itinerary with you! We packed a lot into one day!

HOW TO GET TO JACKSON, WYOMING

The easiest and most direct to getting to Jackson, Wyoming would be to fly into the Jackson Hole airport. You can rent a car from the airport or you can do an RV trip like we did!

Jackson, Wyoming is a small town located just outside the Grand Teton National Park and it is about 1.5 hours south of Yellowstone.

Interesting fact! People tend to call it Jackson Hole instead of just Jackson. The town is technically just Jackson, Wyoming. Jackson Hole is the greater valley of Teton County in Wyoming that includes the smaller ski towns Jackson, Teton Village, Wilson, the Aspens, Moran Junction, and Moose.

Elk Arches in Jackson

The town, Jackson, is located at the southern end of Jackson Hole.

The population here is around 10,000 people! How cute is that! Such a small town. Jackson is a popular tourist destination for those who visit Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons and for those who enjoy skiing.

WHERE TO EAT

A Jackson Hole itinerary is not complete without giving you recommendations on where to eat. The town of Jackson has tons of cute shops and restaurants to eat at. The recommendations below are based on where we eat during our time in Jackson, Wyoming.

We had coffee twice from Jackson Hole Roasters Coffee House . The first time was because we wanted to grab coffee to go and we actually spent a 2nd day in Jackson just working from our computers. We stopped by Cowboy Coffee to work, but they didn’t have any seating due to COVID, so we went back to our first place.

Originally, we began to wait in line to eat at The Bunnery Bakery and Restaurant . It opened at 8am and there was already a huge line. We were starving so we opted to head somewhere else even though this place looked delicious and cute!

We headed to Cafe Genevieve for breakfast. It was in a cute little old house and there was no line! It was still delicious, has 4 stars on Yelp and to be honest you really can’t go wrong with breakfast.

As we were working from Jackson Hole Roasters we noticed people eating breakfast there too and it looked delicious as well.

Who doesn’t love a healthy lunch? Make sure to check out the Healthy Being Cafe and Juicery for delicious salads and juices.

Lunch in Jackson, Wyoming

I recommend visiting Hand Fire Pizza . Who doesn’t love a delicious pizza after a long day? Hand Fire Pizza is located in an old movie theatre. It has the cutest vibe and you get to watch them make your pizza in a huge pizza oven.

ACTIVITIES AROUND JACKSON, WYOMING

Depending on what season you visit Jackson will help determine what kind of activities you can do. This Jackson Hole Itinerary is focused on activities that you can do in and around Jackson during the Fall Season.

Considering you are so close to two National Parks, I would highly recommend you do some hiking. The options are truly endless when it comes to hiking trails. If you are looking for a moderate hike that is about 4.5 miles long then check out the Phelps Lake trail.

There are two options to get to Phelps Lake. You can follow the All Trails route by starting at the Death Canyon Trailhead or you can follow this guide and start at the Rockefeller Preserve.

Jackson Hole itinerary

Looking for an extra fun adventure!? Make sure to jump off the giant rock at Phelps Lake!

Insider’s Tip! Do note that RVs longer than 23 feet are not allowed up the road to Phelps Lake. We had an RV that was 23 feet exactly and they would not allow us up this road. We ended up parking at the bottom of the road and hitchhiking our way up.

They would not allow us to walk up the road either due to lots of Bear and Moose activity.

RENT A BIKE

This is a great way to see the entire area of Jackson Hole. Start your adventure in the town of Jackson and rent an E-bike from E-bikes of Jackson Hole .

Make sure to grab a bike route map from them before you head out. There are tons of biking route options. We chose to do the Grand Loop trail which is about 18 miles long (this is easy on an e-bike). We started in Jackson, went to Teton Village and got lunch and then biked back to Jackson.

Complete guide to Jackson Hole

If you plan to do this route, plan for about 3.5 hours. It was a gorgeous ride, especially in the Fall.

It is $40 per bike for the first 2 hours and then each additional hour is $10.

GO TO A WINERY

Visit the Jackson Hole Winery for some delicious wine and beautiful views. This winery is located just outside the main square. It is a little too far to walk here from the square, so plan to drive.

towns to visit near jackson hole

This was a last minute decision for us and we were lucky enough to snag a spot here, but if you plan to go here then I highly recommend making a reservation !

The town of Jackson is so cute! It has an old-town, western vibe. There are tons of options for shopping. You can plan to grab any souvenir items you may want here or just check out some of the amazing art galleries.

Things to do in Jackson

Make sure to walk through the main town square under their famous real Elk antler arches.

If you happen to be in town on a Saturday, they have farmer’s markets in the mornings during the Summer and the beginning of Fall.

WATCH A MOVIE

This one is a little insiders tip for you! Head to the Teton Gravity Research shop and walk to the back of the store. There is a small little movie theatre where they play some epic adventure videos.

The Teton Gravity Research is a film company that creates films about epic adventure sports. Watching these videos are pretty incredible and inspiring.

FINAL THOUGHTS FROM YOUR OUTDOOR LOVING GIRL

Jackson is probably one of the cutest towns I have ever visited and I highly recommend you plan to visit it! Even if you just have time to visit the main town square! Do you have a favorite small town? I would love to know in the comments!

21 Best Things to Do in Jackson Hole — Including National Parks, Hot Springs, and Cowboy Bars

The Wyoming mountain town has a real Old West feel.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

towns to visit near jackson hole

There are plenty of beautiful mountain towns in the West, but Jackson Hole has long stood out. The Wyoming town sits in a mountain valley surrounded by jutting peaks and open wildlands. It's home to animals like moose, elk, and bears, in addition to real-life cowboys and cowgirls who frequent many of the stops on this list.

In Jackson, you can start the day deep in the wilderness, surrounded by nature, and end it at a cowboy-themed bar filled with locals and live music. This blend of nature and culture is part of what makes Jackson Hole such a special place.

Here are 21 of the best things to do in Jackson Hole.

Snow King Mountain Resort

Snow King Mountain Resort isn't Jackson's biggest, but it's the most accessible. The summer playground and winter ski hill is right in town, providing easy access to the mountain sports locals love. During the summer, you can bike, ride the gondola, or zip down the mountain in a coaster, while in the winter, the slopes are reserved for skiers and snowboarders who come to take in the views before making their descent.

Grand Teton National Park

Irjaliina Paavonera/Travel + Leisure

Part of what makes Jackson Hole so special is its direct access to some of the nation's best national parks . Grand Teton National Park , home to the magnificent Teton Range, sits just north of the city. Within the park, you'll find beautiful alpine lakes, hundreds of miles of trails, and plentiful wildlife, including bears, moose, and elk.

Astoria Hot Springs

Situated on the bank of the Snake River just 20 minutes south of Jackson is a source of natural thermal water that's funneled into a series of natural hot spring pools. Soaking in the mineral-rich waters of Astoria Hot Springs is a Jackson Hole must — especially since entry fees support the Astoria Park Conservancy, which protects the area's natural resources and provides community programming.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

In the winter, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort draws some of the world's best skiers and boarders. But in reality, the "extreme" mountain, which is home to the iconic Corbet's Couloir, has a little something for everyone — even total beginners. In the summer , ski runs transform into hiking and biking trails, and long days leave plenty of time for alfresco dining and enjoying the mountain's ropes course.

Persephone Bakery

It's almost impossible to express the deliciousness that awaits at Persephone . Jackson Hole's most beloved bakery, which now has three locations, is a must if you enjoy French-inspired food — from wonderfully light croissants to hearty quiches. We suggest swinging by their cafe near the Town Square and eating your way through the menu.

Town Square

It may be cliché, but did you really experience Jackson if you didn't walk through the Town Square and get your photo taken under the iconic antler arches? Fun fact: The eye-catching arches were made by hand using an estimated 2,000 elk antlers shed on the nearby National Elk Refuge.

Darwin Ranch

If Jackson Hole is a bit too much for you, make your way east to the remote Darwin Ranch . This spot is known for its quiet, wild setting (it butts up against the Gros Ventre Wilderness), as well as its exceptional food and dude ranch experiences . At Darwin, you can spend the day fishing in Snake River, riding horses, and sitting by an open fire, cocktail in hand.

Jackson Hole Rodeo

In the summer, no trip to Jackson is complete without a night under the stars at the Jackson Hole Rodeo . Every year, the outdoor arena welcomes ropers and bronco riders who come to put on a show for a stadium full of fans. Not into rodeo? Come for the food (and beer).

Bar T 5 Wagon Cookout

For a true — and literal — taste of the Old West, head to the Double H Bar. Their renowned Bar T 5 cookout includes a ride in a horse-drawn covered wagon and a three-hour dinner and show in the stunning Cache Creek Canyon outside town.

Million Dollar Cowboy Bar

Set right off the Town Square, the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar sits under a neon cowboy on a bucking bronco. Inside, the Wild West theme continues with saddle-topped bar seats and rustic cowboy decor. It's the best place in Jackson to, quite literally, saddle up to the bar and enjoy live music.

Stagecoach Bar

Just a few miles west of Jackson Hole at the base of Teton Pass lies a bar that has been a local favorite since 1942. The historic Stagecoach Bar — known simply as "the Coach" by locals — is the place to go for a drink, affordable eats, and the chance to rub elbows with loyal local clientele.

Jackson Hole Winery

As you might imagine, making a good bottle of wine at 6,000-plus feet can be challenging. But after years of experimenting, the folks at Jackson Hole Winery have it nailed. In addition to serving up glass after glass of their pinot noir and viognier, the winery sits at the base of the Teton Range, providing some of the best views you'll ever get from a winery.

One of the most popular destinations within Grand Teton National Park is Jenny Lake — and for good reason. The beautiful lake is often thought of as the park's centerpiece. It's easily accessible, and from the eastern shore, you'll get stunning views of Teewinot Mountain and Mount Saint John.

Yellowstone National Park

The nation's first national park is also one of the most popular — and it just so happens to sit directly north of Jackson Hole. Yellowstone National Park , which turned 150 in 2022, is known for its plentiful geysers (including Old Faithful) and wildlife, including grizzly bears.

National Elk Refuge

Arguably the best place in the world to watch elk is National Elk Refuge , which is adjacent to the city of Jackson Hole. The refuge's resident elk herd roams the almost 25,000 acres of grasslands, forest, and wetlands that have been protected for them. In addition to viewing the animals from lookout points along the road, you can take a tour onto the refuge for an up-close look.

Snake River Brewing

Every good mountain town has a team of brewers crafting locally inspired beer. And the offerings in Jackson don't disappoint, particularly the brews coming out of Snake River Brewing , which has been in operation since 1994. This little haven sits right off the Town Square and serves up a handful of award-winning beers complemented by refined comfort food.

Jackson Hole Playhouse

When you step into the Jackson Hole Playhouse , you enter a completely different world. The rustic performing arts theater offers a stellar dinner and a show, both with an Old West feel. It's a must, especially if it's your first time in Jackson Hole.

Whitewater Rafting

Just west of town, Snake River winds its way along the base of the Tetons. One of the best ways to see the valley — and get a close look at wildlife like moose, elk, and eagles — is by booking a rafting trip with one of the city's many vendors .

National Museum of Wildlife Art

The National Museum of Wildlife Art is the only museum in the country that's dedicated solely to wildlife art — and it's fitting that it's found just outside Jackson, near the famed National Elk Refuge. At the museum, you'll see works by artists like Georgia O'Keeffe and Andy Warhol alongside local pieces.

Aerial Tram

There's nothing quite like the magic of hopping in a gondola car and being swept up a mountain in a mere 12 minutes. Along the way, you'll climb more than 4,000 vertical feet and enjoy staggering views of the Tetons and Jackson Hole valley. Even better, you'll be greeted at the top by warm, gourmet waffles — with everything from Nutella to peanut butter and bacon — from the team at Corbet's Cabin .

Dog Sledding

One of the most unique things you can do in Jackson Hole in the winter is go dog sledding . There's nothing quite like being pulled by a team of highly trained dogs through some of Wyoming's most stunning landscapes. To up the ante, you can even book a tour that ends with a soak at a natural hot spring.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Teton Village

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is frequently voted the number one ski resort in North America, and for good reason. Known as the birthplace of extreme skiing , it's legendary among powder hounds for its long runs and challenging in-bounds and backcountry terrain. But don't worry, beginners and intermediate skiers will find plenty of suitable terrain, too.

In the winter, skiers and snowboarders can carve up more than 2,500 acres of ski trails on two mountains. Expert skiers can take the plunge into the spine-tingling Corbet's Couloir, a steep and narrow chute with a 10- to 20-foot drop-in (depending on snow conditions) from the cornice above.

But the fun doesn't stop when the snow melts. In summer, you can ride the 100-person Jackson Hole Aerial Tram to 10,450 feet for incredible views and high alpine hiking trails, or hop aboard the high-speed gondola and enjoy a meal with panoramic views over the entire valley.

Other fun things to do in Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in summer include mountain biking , hiking, frisbee golf, and a ropes course catering to climbers of all abilities.

Teton Village , at the base of the ski mountains, offers excellent resort amenities. Here, you'll find shops selling outdoor gear and clothing, as well as popular Jackson Hole restaurants and hotels. The free summer concert series staged here is a hit with locals and tourists alike.

Elk Antler Arch, Jackson Town Square

Cowboys, cowgirls, and cashed-up globetrotters feel equally at home in the funky Old West town of Jackson. Sitting at the south end of the valley at an elevation of 6,237 feet, the town is a popular jumping-off point for visiting Yellowstone National Park, a mere one-hour drive away, and the rugged mountain wilderness of Grand Teton National Park .

A great place to start a sightseeing tour of popular Jackson attractions is the Town Square. Tourists love to snap photos here standing under the famous elk antler arches , or gliding around the tiny ice-skating rink.

From the square, you can enjoy an Old-West-style horse and carriage ride around town, or stroll along the boardwalks lined with boutiques and art galleries. If you love wilderness and landscape photography, don't miss the Images of Nature by Thomas Mangelsen gallery. It's a great place to get a dose of inspiration.

Downtown is also the place to come for shopping in Jackson Hole, from gem shops to Lee's Tees with an array of Jackson Hole T-shirts. You'll also find some of the best places to eat in Jackson Hole sprinkled around town.

If you're looking for more exciting things to do in downtown Jackson, how about a taste of the Wild Wild West? During summer, the town square hosts Jackson Hole Shootout demonstrations with talented actors, Monday through Saturday from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Also nearby, Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum is a great place to visit to learn more about the area's history. It features exhibits on Jackson Hole, Grand Teton National Park, and Yellowstone National Park, as well as the Indigenous people of the region.

Snow King Mountain

A five-minute drive from the town square in Jackson, Snow King Mountain is the steepest north-facing FIS (International Ski Federation) racing course in the continental US . This beautiful pine-cloaked mountain rises above the streets of Jackson on the south edge of town, and its summit sits at 7,808 feet.

Established in 1938, the mountain was the valley's first ski resort. Today, it offers an affordable ski or snowboarding experience for those who don't mind the relatively limited terrain. In winter, skiers and snowboarders can access 400 acres of trails, serviced by three lifts. One of the lifts provides access to five beginner trails and six intermediate trails, complementing the steep and often icy expert terrain. Night skiing is also offered, and kids will love the tubing course at the base.

Not a skier or snowboarder? No problem. Hop aboard the Cowboy Coaster , an exhilarating, almost-mile-long mountain roller coaster, which is open year-round — even in winter.

Summer brings even more fun. This is when the mountain hosts horseback rides and the valley's only alpine slide, as well as North America's steepest zipline .

Feel like more of a workout? Test your stamina on the steep hiking and mountain biking trails. Mini-golf and a treetop ropes course add to all the adventure, and at the base of Snow King, the climbing walls and children's playground are a hit with the little ones in the warmer months.

Another highlight at Snow King is the stunning view from the summit . From here, you can see right across the valley of Jackson and the Elk Refuge to the snowcapped Tetons in the distance. The hike up to the summit is one of Jackson Hole's top hiking trails and a popular lunchtime workout for locals.

Not up for the hike? Hop aboard the mountain's brand new gondola, and zoom to the summit in five minutes.

The Snake River

An exciting way to explore the Jackson Hole wilderness from a different perspective is a rafting trip on the Snake River. This famous waterway slithers through the valley from its headwaters in Yellowstone National Park.

Several outfitters offer two different styles of trips: a relaxing scenic float trip through Grand Teton National Park (or the South Park section of the river), and an adrenaline-infused white water trip on Class III rapids. Both offer the chance to admire stunning scenery, including steep limestone canyons, the craggy peaks of the Teton Mountain Range, and thick pine forests.

Along the way, you might spot some of the local wildlife such as deer, bald eagles, osprey, moose, marmots, and beavers.

The Snake River is also one of Wyoming's top fly fishing destinations . If you're looking for things to do in April and May in Jackson Hole, it's one of the best times of year to fly fish, as long as you time it before the runoff. Guided fly fishing float trips can be arranged in season.

Hiker on the Phelps Lake Trail Loop in the Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve

Part of Grand Teton National Park, but administered by the Rockefeller Foundation, the Laurance Rockefeller Preserve offers a one-stop immersive wilderness experience. In 2001, Laurance S. Rockefeller followed in his father John D. Rockefeller's footsteps and donated 1,106 acres of private ranchland to the National Park Service. Today, it is one of the jewels of the park. If you can only make one quick visit to the park, make it here.

Your first stop should be the excellent visitor center. Awarded a Platinum Leed Certification, the unassuming building sits in a serene sagebrush meadow and houses a series of sensory experiences. Sunlight streams through the large windows, poetry peppers the walls, large screens display images of the park's passing seasons, and a soundscape with recordings from the park offers a peaceful space for meditation.

Phelps Lake

After you've explored the visitor center, head out for a hike. Some of Grand Teton National Park's best hiking trails radiate from here. Of the 16 miles of trails, the Phelps Lake Trail Loop is one of the most popular. Make sure you pack bear spray, though — hikers frequently spot black bears on this trail. Before you head out into the wilderness, you can chat to rangers at the center about recent sightings, and organize guided walks.

Insider's tip: The parking lot fills up quickly, so it's best to time your visit for early in the day.

Jackson Hole Rodeo

A trip to the wild west town of Jackson wouldn't be complete without seeing the famous Jackson Hole Rodeo. Barrel-racing, bull-riding, bareback bronc-riding, and calf-roping are just some of the exciting activities on the lineup here, and even the local little tykes participate with nail-biting bareback rides.

The rodeo is held twice weekly during summer with extra performances during peak visitor times.

Another popular event held at the Rodeo Grounds, usually in July, is the Teton County Fair with fun games, farm animals, and dizzying rides.

A word of warning: Animal lovers might find some of the events, such as the calf roping, disturbing.

National Museum of Wildlife Art

Overlooking the Elk Refuge , the National Museum of Wildlife Art is worth visiting as much to admire the building's environmentally sensitive design as for what's inside. Composed of natural stone, the building blends beautifully with a rocky hillside, and the art exhibits begin before you even enter the building on the Sculpture Trail, with life-size wildlife sculptures.

Inside, the museum's superb collection of wildlife art ranges from 2500 BCE to the present day, with a focus on European and American painting and sculpture. The more than 5,000 artworks span a variety of genres and media, from Romanticism to Realism and lithography to photography. Impressive temporary exhibitions complement the permanent collection.

After gazing at all the wildlife art, visitors can admire real wildlife on the Elk Refuge through the museum's spotting scope. The museum is also home to an excellent restaurant, Palate.

National Elk Refuge

Famous for being the largest concentration of wintering elk in the world , the National Elk Refuge is home to herds of more than 5,000 animals.

In winter, horse-drawn sleighs take visitors out across the glittering snowscape for close-up views of these gentle creatures, and accompanying guides provide a narrative history of the refuge. The sleigh rides depart from the Jackson Hole and Greater Yellowstone Visitor Center, which presents excellent exhibits on the history of the refuge and local wildlife. Looking for some private couple time in the winter? Private sleigh rides can be reserved and are one of the most romantic things to do in Jackson Hole.

The National Elk Refuge is also home to a bison herd of more than 500 animals, and you might also spot coyotes, bighorn sheep, and trumpeter swans.

From May through September, you can tour the historic Miller Ranch on the refuge to hear fascinating stories about the valley's original homesteaders and the region's rich history.

Mormon Row with the Tetons in the background

Wondering where to get one of the best photos of Jackson Hole? Take a scenic drive to Antelope Flats. It's about an hour's drive from town, but the scenery en route will make the time melt away.

Get your cameras ready. Along this drive, you'll see spectacular views of the Gros Ventre Mountains and the Teton Range, as well as the delightfully rustic homesteads of the Mormon Row Historic District. You might recognize them from Jackson Hole tourist brochures.

Wildlife sightings are also common. This 640-acre tract of wilderness preserves important habitats and migration routes. Among the many animals you can see here are moose, bison, elk, badgers, coyotes, foxes, many species of birds, and the site's namesake pronghorn antelope.

This is one of the best free things to do in Jackson Hole to soak up Mother Nature's jaw-dropping scenery, To get here, follow highway 191 north from Jackson past Moose Junction and turn right onto Antelope Flats Road.

Chuck wagons in Cache Creek

For a fun dose of cowboy culture, sign up for a covered chuck wagon ride followed by a sunset cookout in the wilderness. After dinner, you'll be treated to tall tales, singing, and performances by local talent.

Several outfitters in the area offer packages: Bar T Five Covered Wagon Cookout & Wild West Show takes visitors into beautiful Cache Creek Canyon for an authentic Dutch-oven dinner.

Teton Wagon Train and Horse Adventure offers four-day trips by horseback or covered wagon. The scenery is exceptional, and wildlife sightings are frequent.

The chuck wagon rides usually run from Memorial Day through September and are a huge hit with families.

Granite Hot Springs

Nothing beats a soak in steamy Granite Hot Springs — especially on a chilly winter's day. Surrounded by spruce, pine, and fir trees in Bridger-Teton National Forest, this inviting pool is a favorite destination for locals and tourists alike.

In winter, it's heated to a toasty 112 degrees Fahrenheit. In summer, it averages around 93 degrees. You can soak here for up to an hour for a small fee, and changerooms and picnic tables are on hand.

Getting here is an adventure in itself. In the winter season (early December until the beginning of April), you can access the springs on a snowmobile or dogsled trip. Alternatively, you could ski in, or ride a fat bike. In the summer (usually late May through October 31), car access is possible down a bumpy dirt road.

The springs are located about a one-hour drive from the town of Jackson.

For such a small town, Jackson is big on culture. And the epicenter of cultural events in Jackson Hole is the Center for the Arts. This modern and intimate venue hosts an impressive lineup of events. The center comprises the Arts & Education Pavilion, as well as the Jean Louise and Mike Thieme Performing Arts Pavilion with a 500-seat theater, music center, and rehearsal space.

Among the many events staged at the center are ballet, opera, international music acts, films, dance performances, as well as the excellent Jackson Wild (formerly the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival ), an annual conservation summit and World Wildlife Day Film Showcase.

Classical music fans will also love the summertime Grand Teton Music Festival at Teton Village, and those who lean more towards musical theater will enjoy the delightful Christmas show at the western-style Jackson Hole Playhouse .

Address: 240 South Glenwood Street, Jackson, Wyoming

Official site: www.jhcenterforthearts.org

Jackson Hole Playhouse

Looking for unique things to do in Jackson Hole at night? Take the whole gang to a show at the historic Jackson Hole Playhouse, Wyoming's longest running professional theater. You'll find it right in downtown Jackson in the town's oldest building, dating from 1915.

You don't have to be a fan of musical theater to have a great time here. Each summer season, talented actors serve up lively performances of favorite Western-style musical comedies — think Seven Brides for Seven Brothers , Paint Your Wagon, and Annie Get Your Gun .

You can purchase a ticket for the show only, or go whole hog and buy lunch or dinner, too. Plus, you can upgrade your ticket for VIP seating. No matter which package you purchase, you'll be singing and clapping along in no time.

This is one of the best things to do in Jackson Hole with a family, and it's a great way to support the local arts.

Dogsledding in Jackson Hole

If you're not a skier, you might be wondering about other things to do in Jackson Hole in winter. How about a dogsledding adventure? It's an exhilarating way to get outside and experience this glittering winter wonderland — especially if you're an animal lover.

You'll travel along the Buffalo Fork River, led by an expert musher and a team of skilled sled dogs. All you have to do is snuggle up in a sled bag, sit back, and enjoy the scenery.

Feel like a soak in some steamy hot springs after your sledding adventure? You can also book dogsled rides to Granite Hot Springs or through the beautiful Bridger-Teton National Forest.

Yellowstone National Park

One of the world's most magnificent wilderness areas, Yellowstone is a popular day trip from Jackson Hole. It's about 57 miles from the town of Jackson, with breathtaking scenery along the way.

The park is known for its geothermal features and boasts the world's highest concentration of active geysers — Old Faithful is the most famous. Contrasting with these hissing moonscapes are sprawling green valleys, towering waterfalls, red-walled canyons, rivers, and vast lakes.

Wildlife is abundant. Among the dazzling diversity of species in these pristine ecosystems are grizzly bears, gray wolves, bison, black bears, and elk, as well as graceful trumpeter swans and bald eagles. The best way to explore the park is on the many hiking trails , however visitors can also drive the scenic Grand Loop , a 142-mile-long road that twists through the park.

Besides the geothermal attractions, park highlights include Yellowstone Lake , Hayden Valley , the Grand Canyon , and the Upper and Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River .

Tourists flock here in the summer months, but the park is open year-round and offers something different in every season, from the budding trees and flowers of spring to the fiery colors of fall and snowmobile safaris in the winter .

When you're choosing a place to stay in Jackson Hole, the biggest factor to consider is whether you want to stay close to the mountain or near the attractions in downtown Jackson. If you're an avid skier or snowboarder, or you're visiting Jackson Hole for other mountain-based activities, you might want to opt for a hotel near the slopes in Teton Village. If you want easy access to a larger range of restaurants, galleries, and attractions, a hotel downtown is more convenient. Choose the best option from these highly rated Jackson Hole hotels:

  • A Jackson Hole classic, The Wort Hotel graces the National Register of Historic Places. Cowboy charm, a convenient downtown location, and tons of character are the high points of this heritage property.
  • For more Western charm, choose the Wyoming Inn of Jackson Hole . Elk-antler lights, stacked stone, and a toasty fire set the tone in the impressive lobby, and the rooms are cozy and comfortable.

Budget Hotels:

  • Budget options are limited in Jackson Hole, especially in high season, but the Alpine Motel offers affordable units a short walk from the town square. Upgraded units come with kitchenettes and dining tables.
  • On a busy intersection just outside town but still near restaurants and shops, the Pony Express Motel offers good value. Some rooms come with kitchenettes, and family rooms have bunk beds.
  • Just down the street, Virginian Lodge is an older property with large, clean rooms and a popular evening entertainment venue.

2. Snake River White Water Rafting

1450 US-89, 83001,  map

We met early morning at  Sands Whitewater & Scenic River Trips  and got into the river 25 miles south of the city. Ours felt like the perfect mix of enjoying the scenery and an adrenaline rush, which made it one of our favorite Jackson Hole activities. The rapids are typically class 2-3, and they run tours May to September depending on the water levels. If you’re looking for something more relaxing, you can opt for the scenic float trips down the river. We also saw some people fly fishing during our trip, which made Jacob want to try it on our next visit.

Photographers are positioned along the river to take shots of you at pivotal moments, so don’t forget to smile! Although, I love my terrified face in the second photo. There are two photography companies, and we recommend  Float-O-Graphs . They have a store in the heart of Jackson and helpful staff. Plus you get a huge discount if you buy it there vs online.

Pro Tip: According to our guide, you should visit in July if you want a more exciting ride. The water is warmer and there are the most rapids.

3. Soak in the Granite Hot Springs

Granite Creek Rd, 83001,  map

Granite Hot Springs is a local favorite spot for a soak and is about an hour drive outside of town. It has been around since the pioneer days and has transformed over the years and is now an established pool. There is a small fee ($8 adults, $5 children) and onsite bathroom facilities.

Just before arriving, you’ll get views of Granite Creek Falls. It’s a great stop and if you dare, you can even wade across Granite Creek to find two natural pools. As a warning, it’s not easy since the water moves quick. I would highly recommend a trekking poles to stabilize yourself.

Pro Tip: The road gets rough driving out to the creek so take it slow or have a high clearance vehicle.

4. Take a Scenic Drive

One of the best ways to enjoy the area is by going on a scenic drive. Not only do you get epic views of the Tetons, but you may even spot wildlife. These are some great drives:

  • Moose Wilson Road – windy 8-mile road between Grand Teton National Park and Moose. They say if you want to see a moose, your best chances are here. Also, take time to explore the beautiful Laurance Rockefeller Preserve area.
  • Inner Park Loop Road – 20-mile path through the National Park right under the Tetons.
  • Jenny Lake Scenic Loop – 3-mile road giving you plenty of viewpoints.
  • Kelly Loop – 16-mile loop where you’ll find herds of bison, Mormon Row, Moulton Barn, and more.

Pro Tip: If you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of wildlife, just look for a mass of cars stopped on the side of the road. Driving along the Gros Ventre River is a great place to start, and it’s where we spotted the moose below.

6. National elk Refuge

675 E Broadway Ave, 83001,  map

The National Elk Refuge is a sanctuary for the Jackson Elk Herd and home to roughly 11,000 animals. During the summer, they are harder to find in the area, but you may spot other animals such as bison, bald eagles, trumpeter swans, and wolves. Unfortunately when we went, they were roaming elsewhere.

In the summer, you can follow a trail to get some great views. In the winter , they also do sleigh rides that get you closer to the elk making it one of the best places for Jackson Hole wildlife. We made it back in the winter – check out our guide here .

7. Hop in a UTV and Explore the Backcountry

27655 US-26, 83013,  map

Get off the main roads and explore the backcountry on a UTV. Since we were staying at the Togwotee Mountain Lodge, we picked ours up from the front desk and took it around the Bridger Teton National Forest area.

Usually, you get great views of the Tetons, but the entire west coast was on fire when we visited. It just means there’s another reason to come back. They also have a  location in town  if that is closer for you.

Pro Tip: The UTVs are street-legal too, so you can drive the scenic roads.

Where to Stay

We stayed at  Togwotee Mountain Lodge  during our visit. Located about 30 minutes east of Grand Teton National Park, it’s still convenient for exploring the area, but far enough away from the busiest of town to give you a secluded hideaway.

On-site, you have the option to stay in the main lodge or private cabins. There are two restaurants on-site and they even have hot tubs to relax in after a long day.  See more Tripadvisor reviews  of the lodge or  book your stay here .

Dammit, why did I read this AFTER I’ve been there? Haha, I didn’t think to look up rodeos! Or stagecoach rides! I loved the town though. And it was rubbish weather for Grand Teton unfortunately, but we did see a moose! These are awesome tips anyway, you wouldn’t think there’s so much to do there.

HAHA That happens to me a lot too! The Tetons are so amazing. Did you at least get to see the mountain range at all? Guess we all need to make a trip back.

Jackson Hole & Grand Teton N.P. Visitor Guide

19 things to do during a jackson hole summer.

A Jackson Hole summer really comes alive from June through early September, offering all manner of activities and adventures throughout the valley and in Grand Teton National Park. Push your limits, try out something new, or deepen an existing passion, all in the glorious outdoor playground we call home.

1. Climb the Tetons

Looking for some vertical adventure?  Making it to the top of a mountain is a major triumph and can be one of the highlights of your trip to Jackson Hole. Whether you want to make an epic ascent of the Grand Teton (you need to book this weeks or month in advance) or try your hand at climbing for the first time, Jackson Hole’s various outfitters, Exum Guides or Jackson Hole Mountain Guides have you covered with the right gear, guide services and expert instruction. Exum has a fun family and kids climbing class. In addition, experienced day climbers will enjoy local hot spots such as Blacktail Butte and the Rodeo Wall. Jackson Hole Mountain Resort's climbing attraction, Via Ferrata , garners raves from locals, so consider this assisted climbing option whether you're a novice or a more seasoned climber.

2. Mountain Bike

Over the past decade, Jackson Hole has emerged as a world-class mountain biking destination.  The area’s abundance of trails and bike shops makes it easy for bikers of all abilities to get off the pavement.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort  and Grand Targhee   offer lift-accessed mountain biking all summer, while the world-famous Teton Pass trails, with their massive jumps and wild features, will get even the most seasoned mountain biker’s heart rate up. In the town of Jackson, Snow King Mountain's network of cross-country bike trails winds through a series of sunny aspen groves as it crisscrosses the ski hill and stretches into nearby Cache Creek.  Serious adrenaline junkies need go only a few miles west to get their fix.

For those looking for a mellower ride, check out Jackson's popular Pathways .  These paved bike trails not only run between Jackson, Wilson and Teton Village, but continue into the stunning heart of Grand Teton National Park. Teton Mountain Bike Tours offers guided rides for all abilities.

3. Go Western

No trip to the Cowboy State would be complete without some old-fashioned, Western good times.  Jackson Hole is, after all, “the last of the Old West,” so connect to the spirit, forge your own frontier memories and indulge your inner cowboy .

Trail Rides: Few activities offer as much insight into the traditions and textures of the West as horseback riding . Stables are located throughout the valley, and each offer rides to accommodate any schedule, from an hour to a full day.  These full-service dude ranches also offer guides, camping equipment and provisions for multi-day pack trips.

Chuckwagons: Chuckwagon dinners at Bar T Five or Spring Creek Ranch , offer up solid grub and a dose of Western entertainment: What could be more perfect than eating dinner with a cowboy or two? Chuckwagon dinners are great fun for the whole family and a must-see for those who’ve never experienced the Old West firsthand.

Stagecoach Rides: Hop aboard a bonafide stagecoach for a 10-minute ride around town, with two handsome, yoked horses leading the way.

Jackson Hole Shootout: From Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day each year, the streets are cleared at 6 p.m. (except Sundays) to accommodate the Jackson Hole Shoot-out Gang. With characters as dastardly or virtuous as you’ll find in any tumbleweed saloon, the gang puts on a show that culminates with an authentic shoot-out, the longest-running of its kind in the country.

Jackson Hole Shooting Experience:  Looking for a unique activity in Jackson Hole for the entire family to enjoy and connect? Jackson Hole Shooting Experience  offers safe, fun and educational multi-gun shooting experiences that will strengthen connections and build memories, making your vacation a huge success.

Ready, set, rodeo! As anyone who's cheered in the stands can attest, the Jackson Hole Rodeo is the real deal. Catch the excitement—and cowboy fever—on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights.

4. Take a Hike

Hiking in Jackson Hole runs the gamut from river walks to boulder scrambles to mountain panoramas and getting high—like thousands of feet high. Everyone has their own definition of a day hike , and Jackson Hole offers abundant options.  Near the town of Jackson, the Goodwin Lake, Cache Creek and Jackson Peak hikes in the Bridger-Teton National Forest are popular, low-stress options.  In Grand Teton National Park , the Bradley and Taggart lakes hikes are pleasant loops around serene mountain lakes at the foot of the Tetons.  Further into the park, hikers can make the trek up to the Phelps Lake overlook and Death Canyon trail for impressive views.  Check in with park rangers, visitor centers , or the local Valley Bookstore on the Town Square for recommendations and trail guides. The Hole Hiking Experience offers guided trips or go with Jackson Hole Mountain Guides to hike and scramble to a Teton summit in a day!

5. Get In (or On) the Water

If you’ve had enough of terra firma, head out onto one of Jackson Hole’s many waterways.  From whitewater rafting to paddleboarding to scenic floats trips and canoeing , the Jackson Hole area has no equal when it comes to combining beauty with water adventure.  The Tetons’ placid lakes offer many options for integrating a paddle or float with wildlife viewing, and the Snake River flowing into and out of Jackson is the prime choice for drift boat fishing.  Eighteen miles south of town, the Snake River Canyon promises soaks and thrills for those seeking high-intensity whitewater adventure.

Feel free to jump into the many lakes, streams and rivers that dot the valley, as well as the swimming pond at Rendezvous Park (R Park) in Wilson. For an extra special experience, head to Astoria Hot Springs Park, only 20 minutes from Jackson on the banks of the Snake River, which features 5 soaking pools, including a dedicated pool for kids (reservations only; $18 adults, $14 kids 2-12, free for infants to 24 months; closed Wednesdays for pool maintenance). Or venture out to the rustic and relaxing Granite Hot Springs pool, just 30 minutes south of town ($8 adults; $5 children)

[ Watch Video ] If so, look no further than one of Jackson’s Hole’s paragliding services . 9. Fly Fish

One of the quintessential activities to do in Jackson Hole is fly fishing with the impressive Teton Range as a backdrop. The Snake River and its tributaries are known as world-class fisheries.  From the upper reaches of the Gros Ventre River, through the braided Grand Teton National Park section of the Snake, to the lumbering stretches of the South Fork and Salt rivers, anglers find more trout than there are flies with which to catch them. Whether by boat or bank, morning or afternoon, an army of outfitters and guides is ready to reveal the secrets of the wily cutthroat trout and others inhabiting the waters of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

10. Learn About the Lore of Jackson Hole

Like ghostly brands on the wilderness, traces remain of the valley’s original homesteaders. For a glimpse of the structures they built to shelter from the elements, drive out to Mormon Row near Kelly. There you can also see the iconic Moulton Barn, one of the most photographed structures in all of Jackson Hole.

Menor’s Ferry Historic District is located half a mile from Grand Teton National Park’s Moose entrance. For many years the ferry was the only dry way for people to get across the Snake River. Park rangers offer daily, free rides on a replica ferry, as well as a tour of the district, which includes settler Bill Menor's 1894 cabin and general store. Near Menor’s Ferry is the Chapel of the Transfiguration, which was built in 1925. It has been—and still is—the site of many a Teton wedding.

The Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum hosts free walking tours around downtown Jackson in the summertime and brings Jackson Hole’s multi-faceted history to life through a collection of diverse exhibits in the society's brand-new building on Broadway, off Town Square.

The Murie Center is located on the historic Murie Ranch in Moose and was once the heart and soul of the early conservation movement. At 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, you can take a 30-minute, docent-led tour of the home of late environmental stewards Mardy and Olaus Murie.

The White Grass Ranch . This former dude ranch on Death Canyon Road is now home to the Western Center for Historic Preservation, an educational and resource center dedicated to the preservation and maintenance of cultural resources in our Western national parks.

Seated on the crest of the ridge atop Snow King Mountain, the brand new Snow King Observatory is state of the art with a large (one meter) Plane Wave telescope available for public observation day or night via on-site staff. The telescope rests on a 20-foot concrete pier anchored in the earth and isolated from the greater structure to prevent vibrations from disrupting its position. The 4,400-square-foot observatory features a 35-seat planetarium space theater and a 40-seat auditorium for group presentations and learning opportunities. Adjacent to the 24-foot dome is a rooftop observation deck where portable telescopes can be set up for additional viewing during astronomical events. The Snow King Gondola can access the observatory, or if you’d prefer to hike some trails, go up 1,600 feet to the summit.

14. Take a Scenic Drive

Be a "Sunday driver" any day! While oohing and aahing is simply the name of the game out here, we've curated a few of the really jaw-dropping scenic drives around Jackson Hole.

• Moose Wilson Road. Wildlife spotting is a given on this narrow and winding, 8-mile road that runs between the Grand Teton National park entrance just outside of Teton Village to Moose.

• Inner Park Loop Road. Travel for 20 unforgettable miles through Grand Teton National Park underneath the watchful eyes of the towering Tetons.

• Jenny Lake Scenic Loop. This one-way, three-mile road off the main park roadway is a less traveled gem.

• Kelly Loop. The Kelly herd of bison comes out and plays in force just before sunset on this 16-mile loop that starts and ends at Gros Ventre Junction. Other sights include Mormon Row, Mouton Barn and Shadow Mountain.

• Teton Pass. This high mountain pass starts in Wilson and connects the valleys of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and Teton Valley, Idaho.

• Snake River Canyon. Perhaps one of the most gorgeous mountain canyon roads in the country! The Snake River hugs one side of the canyon and steep hills and mountains are on both sides. The Canyon road connects Jackson with Alpine, Wyoming, where the Snake and Grey's rivers intersect with the Palisade's Reservoir.

15. Sit a Spell in a Saloon

Plan to visit one of our iconic watering holes, rife with the history of the West and steeped in cowboy tradition. You can straddle a saddle at the bar of the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar and listen to live music while fellow patrons two-step and boot-scoot across the dance floor. Just around the corner from the Cowboy Bar, in the historical Wort Hotel, you can see the more than 4,000 1921 uncirculated Morgan silver dollars embedded in the bar of the aptly named Silver Dollar Bar . The Silver Dollar Showroom offers live music and a distinctly Western vibe nightly. The newly-remodeled Virginan Saloon in the Virginian Lodge is a classic Jackson Hole favorite location to hear local bands and mingle with honest-to-goodness cowboys. And no trip to Jackson Hole would be complete without attending “Sunday Church” at the Stagecoach Bar in Wilson where you can dance with a cowboy or cowgirl if you so choose as the famous Stagecoach Band plays on through the night.

16. Admire Amazing Art

Within the past decade, Jackson Hole has taken its place beside Scottsdale, Santa Fe, San Francisco and New York as a major destination for art lovers, becoming known as the Art Center of the Rockies. The National Center for Arts Research has ranked Jackson the most vibrant arts community among U.S. populations smaller than 1 million.

Nearly 30 local galleries—including the renowned National Museum of Wildlife Art —proudly present a broad range of work, from old masters like Charles Russell and Frederic Remington to nationally and internationally known contemporary artists, some of whom live right here in Teton County. The Center for the Arts , in downtown Jackson, also hosts art exhibitions in its lobby.

Art aficionados flock here by the hundreds every September for the Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival , widely recognized as one of the premier cultural events in the West, featuring works of acclaimed artists worldwide. Both the National Museum of Wildlife Art and Grand Teton National Park hold plein air festivals each summer.

The Art Association of Jackson Hole ’s outdoor art fairs features local and national artists, demos, food, live music and more. This year's fairs will be held July 26th to 28th and August 16th through 18th on the grand lawn at the Center For the Arts, located just a few blocks from Town Square.

17. See a Stunning Sunset

When the sun sets in the Tetons, it’s a take-your-breath-away experience. Here are some of our favorite spots for watching the sun sink beneath the horizon and behind the dramatic Teton Range.

Curtis Canyon Overlook. Located close to the town of Jackson and reachable via the National Elk Refuge Road, this gem of a sunset viewing spot is part the Bridger-Teton National Forest.

Mormon Row. The Mormon Row Historic District is home to the Moulton Barn, the most photographed barn in Wyoming. Sunsets there can include bison from the Kelly herd, and only add to the jaw-dropping scenery. Drive north from Jackson on Hwy 191 past Moose Junction and turn right onto Antelope Flats Road.

Dornan’s. Whether you’re inside Dornan’s Pizza, Pasta Company or sitting on its upstairs deck, or enjoying a chuck wagon meal on a picnic table, you’ll have a front-row seat to watch the sun’s final hurrah of the day.

Jenny Lake and the top of Signal Mountain in Grand Teton National Park are two other places to see a memorable sunset.

SUMMER WILDLIFE TOURS!

Wildlife expeditions of teton science schools, $5 off with online purchase, jackson hole rodeo, save $2 off admission, national museum of wildlife art, 18. take in a show.

Jackson Hole Playhouse —Jackson Hole's only dinner theater—presents family-friendly musicals during winter and summer. The 2024 summer musical is the Western-themed "Oklahoma!" It opens on May 31st and performances are Monday through Saturday. For tickets and more information, visit jhplayhouse.com .

19. Check Out the Nearby Towns

While Jackson offers a myriad of adventures, it can be very crowded during the summer season, resulting in long lines for restaurants, limited (or frustrating to find) parking spots both in town and in Grand Teton and Yellowstone national parks and even discovering more popular hiking trails jam-packed with other hikers. Pack your patience.

So on that note, we recommend taking a half-or full-day excursion to the “bedroom” communities of Jackson — Alpine (Wyoming)  and Victor and Driggs, Idaho. All are slower-paced and less expensive alternatives to Jackson.

Alpine is a relatively short jaunt from Town Square. Twenty-odd minutes of the drive is through the amazingly beautiful Snake River Canyon where you’ll see the mighty river on one side of the highway and towering hills and mountains on the other. Beer aficionados must make a stop at Melvin Brewing which sits on the Palisades and offers up award-winning craft beers, as well as snack, lunch and dinner items. You can also recreate on the Palisades Reservoir.

Victor and Driggs, Idaho, situated via Teton Pass on the other side of the Teton Range, are slower-paced and less expensive alternatives to Jackson. With a slew of eateries, several breweries, Grand Teton Distillery , golf courses, mountain biking and the popular “Music on Main” outdoor concert series in Victor offered on Thursday evenings during the summer, you will certainly delight in this side trip. The drive is approximately half an hour from Jackson.

Bonus Things To Do

The Teton Raptor Center Avian Experience Program offers you a 45-minute opportunity to meet various birds of prey (think eagles, hawks, owls) in its newly-remodeled historic barn every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the center in Wilson. Book online at tetonraptorcenter.org.

You can also learn about and mingle with these fascinating birds for free every Tuesday and Wednesday in Teton Village (at the base of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort) during the Alive@5 series held from June through August.

Take in Town Square by spending the day and the night in and around this iconic location.

Why Go To Jackson Hole

With  Grand Teton National Park  to the north and miles of national forest in every other direction, the Jackson Hole valley has remained relatively isolated from the burgeoning travel industry. Instead it has survived on local industries like logging, ranching and, during the 19th century, fur trading. But recently, Jackson Hole has encouraged the rise of tourism. Former blue-collar settlements like Jackson and Grand Teton now boast notable art and performance venues, and mega ski resorts have transformed the region into an up-and-coming winter wonderland. When planning an opulent getaway, many people don't give western Wyoming a thought. To those travelers, we say: Think again.

Sure, you won't encounter the glitz and glam of  Aspen  or  Lake Tahoe , but the beauty and vastness of the Jackson Hole region has caught the attention of Hollywood celebs like Harrison Ford and politicos like former Vice President Dick Cheney. Yet, even with its fresh and luxurious upgrade, Jackson Hole remains first and foremost the heart of mountain country, with rugged trails and miles of open space that recall a time before the West was won.

Jackson Hole Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best times to visit Jackson Hole are the months of April, May, September and October, unless you’re a skier, then winter is the season for you. Although the weather during these shoulder seasons can be unpredictable – temperatures can range anywhere from the low 30s to the low 60s – you can expect to find prices at their lowest and a region practically free of tourists. Expect rates to rocket in the summer since both  Yellowstone  and  Grand Teton  are nearby and draw in thousands of visitors. Although you'll save a few bucks on a winter trip, the arrival of powder hounds will keep hotel rates relatively high.

What You Need to Know

Jackson Hole isn't Jackson Many travelers confuse Jackson Hole, the valley region, with Jackson, the town. But remember that Jackson town is located inside the Jackson Hole region.

You're not alone here Jackson Hole is a common stomping ground for wild animals, including bears. If you plan on hiking, go with a friend and make plenty of noise on the trails.

Avoid driving in the winter Heavy snowfall and ice in the colder months can make road conditions dangerous. If you don't have experience with winter driving, it's best to stay off the road.

How to Save Money in Jackson Hole

Visit during the offseason  Jackson Hole experiences two high seasons: summer and winter. A visit during the shoulder seasons (especially in the months of May or October) will save you big bucks.

Book your lift tickets in advance online You won't score significant savings, but you can save a small percentage by purchasing your lift tickets in advance online.

Consider a vacation rental If you're traveling with a family or group, it may make more financial sense to rent a vacation home to avoid booking several pricey hotel rooms.

What to Eat

Jackson Hole has a wealth of dining options , from old-timey saloons and steakhouses to high-end spots for haute cuisine. Outdoor adventurers often want a cold brew at the end of the day and one local favorite is the Snake River Brewery , which touts its status as Wyoming's oldest brewery, though there are plenty of other spots around town to quench your thirst, too.

While buffalo can be found on most menus in this western town, Local Restaurant & Bar features classic and specialty cuts of locally-ranched meats from its in-house butchery. Carnivores might want to try the spicy elk sausage, beef tongue pastrami, or buffalo Wellington for something different. Bin 22 offers a hip spot to drink fine wines and enjoy creative tapas. If you find a wine you love, you can pick it up to-go in the restaurant's bottle shop. Located in the historic Teton Theater, Hand Fire Pizza  is a casual spot with a fun and lively atmosphere, as are  Café Genevieve and the Mangy Moose . Cowboy Coffee Co. is another local favorite, and a pound of its Original Cowboy Blend makes for a great souvenir. If it's brunch you're after, consider Persephone – beloved by locals for its charming interiors and tasty pastries.

Getting Around Jackson Hole

The best way to get around Jackson Hole is by car. Rental offices are located in the town of Jackson and at the Jackson Hole Airport (JAC), about 9 miles north. There is also public transportation available around the town of Jackson and to Teton Village. However, service isn't very frequent. Taxis are also available in the area. An airport initiative called TaxiPool is a ride-sharing program to reduce road traffic. Passengers who use the service receive a $10 discount on the posted fare to their destination. Head to the taxi pool stand in the baggage claim area for details. Some hotels offer complimentary shuttle service, so make sure to ask.

Most travelers fly into Jackson Hole Airport. The airport is serviced by United, Delta and American airlines, with nonstop flights from 12 major U.S. cities.

Part of the National Register of Historic Places, the Moulton Barns in the Mormon Row Historic District was once home to Mormon settlers migrating from Idaho in the 1890s.

The spa is equipped with four treatment rooms, a relaxation lounge and two steam rooms, with access to the outdoor infinity pool and hot tub. All the dining outlets are exclusively available to hotel guests; there’s one main on-site restaurant, The Grill, as well as the Grand Terrace Bar and Zinc Bar.

  • 3275 Village Dr, Teton Village, WY 83025

For a private, boutique hotel experience, look no further than Caldera House. The intimate property is composed of just eight guest rooms, and is located right in the heart of Jackson’s Teton Village.

All of the rooms, designed by award-winning studios Commune Design and Carney Logan Burke, are equipped with a chef’s kitchen, dining area, wood-burning fireplace, living room and private outdoor space. It’s a western-style decor vibe, with fluffy white chairs, Navajo-inspired rugs and wood accents. For dining, there’s Corsa and the more casual Southcable Cafe, as well as Shin Shin. One of the biggest perks, though, is surely access to the Alpine Members Lounge, which is exclusively open to hotel guests and members, for a fun après-ski scene complete with fire pits.

  • 120 N Glenwood St. Jackson Hole, WY 83001

Hotel Jackson opened in 2015, and became the first LEED-certified hotel to open in the town. Situated right by the historic town square, it’s composed of 55 bright and airy rooms, including four suites, all of which are fitted with wood paneling and natural gas fireplaces, and some of which have private balconies. Figs restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with Mediterranean- and Lebanese-inspired cuisine. There’s also a cozy library and a rooftop hot tub.

  • 112 Center St, Jackson, WY 83001

Opened in 2021, the Cloudveil is a newer addition to the Jackson Hole hotel scene. It’s conveniently situated right on the Town Square in downtown Jackson, with interiors inspired by Jackson Hole’s natural landscape, starting with a massive stone boulder and locally-made desk blotter at the check-in desk.

The 100 guest rooms and suites are fitted with custom wood and leather furniture, in addition to a fireplace, flat screen TVs and wifi. For dining, there’s The Bistro, a Parisian brasserie-style eatery, as well as a rooftop terrace with impressive mountain views. There’s also a fitness center, pool and hot tub.

  • 50 Glenwood St, Jackson, WY 83001

The Wort Hotel was built in 1941, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It sits just a half block from the elk antler arches marking the Jackson Town Square in downtown.

The historic hotel is fully western-themed, but in an authentic way. There are 55 rooms, many of which are adorned with some of the 200 pieces of original Western art in the hotel’s collection. There’s also a fitness center with a Jacuzzi.

During the winter ski season, a complimentary hotel shuttle takes guests right to the ski slopes at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. The old West-style hotel will also organize a private ski fitting as well as a ski valet, and there’s a daily après ski. Don’t forget to stop at the Silver Dollar Bar, an iconic Jackson Hole institution with over 2,000 silver dollars inlaid in the bar.

Town of Jackson

towns to visit near jackson hole

What most people call the Old West we call downtown.

Jackson and its Town Square have been the social and cultural heart of the valley for more than a century.

It no longer takes a day and a wagon to get to town, but once here the soda fountain on the Town Square — and the family running it — is the same as 100 years ago. The log cabin early settler Ben Coe used as his blacksmith shop is now a sushi restaurant. The wooden sidewalks that formerly kept people from stepping in horse manure now link fine art galleries, James Beard-recognized restaurants, public art, boutiques, parks, and gear shops. Jackson has changed since it was incorporated in 1914, but exploring it remains as much of an adventure as ever.

After a big day in the mountains, the town of Jackson is the perfect spot to live it up, relax, or indulge.

The town of Jackson has done the seemingly impossible: It’s managed to upgrade and modernize with chic hotels and fancy restaurants without losing its Western soul. You’ll notice it as you walk through antler arches and past line-dancing cowboys on your way to a spa treatment, a sushi dinner, or a theater production. After a day of adventures, there’s nothing better than soaking in Jackson’s authentic mountain town vibes.
