What is the Copenhagen Card?

The Copenhagen Card is an all encompassing city  pass that covers the wider Copenhagen area. Hit the town sightseeing without worrying about spending any more  money – it’s all included !

How does it work

Copenhagen card price

You can pick either an online pass – downloadable on the Copenhagen Card app ( Google Play or App Store ) – or get a  voucher which you can print and then collect at  4 locations across Copenhagen.  The pass durations are customisable and range from 24 hours through to  120 hours – and many in between. There’s a  pass to suit all from weekend city breakers to those taking a week-long holiday.  You need to activate your pass in the app or write the date and time you begin using the voucher. Time starts ticking when you use the first attraction.

Copenhagen Card Price and Duration

*Children 0-9 don’t need a pass. They travel and visit free!

Copenhagen Public Transport Network

Denmark attractions

Enjoy unlimited use of public transportation, from buses, trains and even the metro system in the Greater Copenhagen Region. You can also avail of discounts in restaurants, on boat trips, tours, car rentals and even selected activities or attractions.

Copenhagen Card – How to use the Transport option

There are no barriers for public transport. On buses, you can show the pass to the driver.  For the Metro or S Train, you need to be able to present your pass (or app) if a  ticket collector comes.

Is the Copenhagen Card worth it?

  • Know exactly what you spend
  • Don’t worry  about visiting those expensive  attractions – they’re included
  • Free travel pass
  • No  fiddling  around  with tickets and lots  of change
  • No  making multiple  foreign transactions at  ticket  booths on your bank card
  • You might  feel pressure to see a lot of sights  to make it worth it
  • Needs a lot of planning to make your  money  back
  • You might miss free  of  charge attractions or simply wandering around aimlessly

Our opinion

City passes are in our opinion a great way to see a city. I tend to  buy them because  otherwise, it feels like I’m spending a lot of money at attractions. But  you do need to plan  properly. And you need to be disciplined and organised to get the best benefit.

Tips to get the most of it

  • Identify the high hitting attractions – the most expensive
  • Organise these attractions by location and plan your route
  • Total up the  value of your pass. If it breaks even, then it is worth it for the convenience alone.
  • Any additional attractions you can cover increase your savings!

Whom is the Copenhagen Card interesting for?

Copenhagen card review

  • Those who want to keep a control on  their spend
  • Those who plan to sightsee – hard
  • Those who will be out all day and all night on the transport network
  • First time visitors who want to see the big hitting attractions

Is Copenhagen Card worth it for families

In general yes, for those with children over 9. But think carefully. If you are travelling with younger kids they are free, so you just need the adult pass for yourself. But will you really be able to cover off all the sights ?

Kids need rest breaks, toilet stops, fed frequently. They need downtime. Maybe a nap. For some families seeing 2 attractions in a day is a big task, any more is impossible. Think about what is achievable for you before committing.

How to save money with the Copenhagen Card

copenhagen street denmark.net

Let’s take a 24 hour pass as an example. For an adult you’ll fork out €54.

Now, let’s see what the average day would cost you

  • 1 day transport pass – €17
  • Tivoli Gardens – €14
  • National Aquarium   – €23
  • Christiansborg Palace – €20

Just visiting 3 attractions in one day would cost you €74! And the pass gets cheaper the longer the duration. Whilst the adult 24 hour pass is €54 per day, the 120 hour pass works out at just €24 per day.  Faced with the pretty expensive costs of any major European city, this works out an amazing deal.

Where to buy the Copenhagen Card

City in Denmark

You may purchase your card here or you may get it at sales outlets in the airport, tourist information offices and railway stations. You can also purchase in most hotels, hostels and even campsites!

If you prefer to save time, we recommend booking your Copenhagen Travel Card online here . Prices start at from €554 for the 24-hour pass.

Where to collect your Card

If you decide not to use the online purchase option, you can opt to receive the voucher via email. Then, you’ll need to take it to one of 4 locations that will allow you to exchange the voucher for the pass:

  • Service Information in Copenhagen Airport (terminal 3)
  • Tivoli Box Office at Vesterbrogade 3
  • Copenhagen Info at Copenhagen Central Station
  • Copenhagen Visitor Service, Vesterbrogade 4 i

Well, that's what we think. It all depends on what you're looking for when you visit Copenhagen. We have a section that answers that question in our article.

We are seasoned city pass travellers and we have to say, the Copenhagen Pass is one of the best value passes we have seen. It’s not that difficult to make your money back on this pass. This is largely due to the fact that some of the attractions are pretty expensive.

The transport card – which will cover your airport trip – is also a great bonus. And if you have a young family with kids under 9, their whole trip is basically free! If this all sounds like a good idea, why not buy the pass now here. Don’t forget to tell us how many attractions you managed to cover during your trip.

A Complete Guide to the Copenhagen Card

Copenhagen Card and Guide

If you’re considering a trip to Copenhagen, one of the things you will likely encounter in your research is the Copenhagen Card. Even if you’ve only spent five minutes on TripAdvisor or a quick glance at Denmark’s official tourist site you will likely have come across a mention of these but what do they cover? How do they work? And most importantly, is a Copenhagen Card worth it?

What is a Copenhagen Card?

Similar to many cities around the world, Denmark’s capital has opted to combine attraction tickets and offer a tourist pass. The card covers 79 attractions across Copenhagen and unlike some other city passes, the card extends outwith the city centre, covering attractions in greater metropolitan area.

Also included in the price is unlimited public transport in the whole of the city area from Zones 1- 99 which also encompasses the airport routes. As well as the “free” attractions, there are also discounts for additional tours, bike hire and some eateries as well.

Copenhagen Cards can be bought in several time increments starting at 24 hours up to a maximum of 120 hours and are available in adult and child version while children under 10 can travel on a parents card.

Copenhagen Card App Screenshot

Copenhagen Card App

As well as your card you can download the Copenhagen Card App onto your phone which gives you with all the information about attractions, their opening times and the nearest public transport stops. You can favourite locations to help plan your visit or simply use the map to see what is nearby.  Plus, the whole thing can be used offline. The Copenhagen Card App also has public transport maps and, if you don’t mind using data, it allows you to connect with google to find out the next bus or train to your chosen location. At present you still need to have a physical card but it looks like you might soon be able to simply use a QR code on the app instead.

Where to buy a Copenhagen Card and how much?

To purchase the card you can either order online before you arrive or buy a card in person once in Copenhagen. If you opt to purchase beforehand you can have the card posted out to your home address for a small fee but you’ll need to ensure sufficient time for it to arrive. The card’s official website actually suggests delivery can take up to six weeks so you’ll need to plan ahead. If you’re buying online you can also purchase the card in a number of different currencies.

If you don’t want to risk a late arrival or a card getting lost in the post the best option is to pick it up at one of the four collection points in Copenhagen . Just take along your emailed voucher and swap it for your cards. We chose to buy online and collect at Copenhagen Airport.

As of Feb 2018 Cards start at £47 | 389 DKK | €53 for an adult 24 hour card up to a maximum of  £107 | 889 DKK | €120   for the 120 hour option.

One of the benefits of the Copenhagen Card is that one adult can take up to two children up to the age of nine on their card and older children under 16 only require a child card which is roughly half the adult price. There are not currently any group or student discount options.

How to use the Copenhagen Card

Once you’ve got your physical card you will need to activate it before its first use. All you need to do is write the start date and time on the back. So, if you don’t plan to use your card right away you can delay the start time on the back until you’re ready to go to make sure you get the best value out of your card. Remember that the cards work on hours and not calendar days so if you fill in your card at 14.00 on the 5th of the month it will be valid until 13.59 on the 6th it will not end at midnight on the 5th.

While you will receive a booklet and map along with your card, we found the best option was to download the Copenhagen Card App to use in conjunction with your card to help you plan you visit.

How to use the Copenhagen Card to visit attractions

Once dated, your card is good to go but you will need to hand it over at most attractions. Ticket desks will scan your card and generally issue you with an attraction ticket for entry.

Copenhagen Zoo where we visited using our Copenhagen Card

Things NOT to do include trying to gain entry without an attraction specific ticket or trying to scan your card QR code on an entrance barrier. These are not chip-embedded cards and cannot be read by every venue so make sure to head to a ticket desk or reception before heading into your chosen activity. We saw a few people utterly confused why they couldn’t get through turnstiles – save the awkward interaction with a security guard and just ask first.

Another common mistake made with the Copenhagen Card is entering the wrong queue. Sadly, the Copenhagen Card is not a queue skip or fast track ticket so don’t enter these queues. During peak season there may be a dedicated line for card holders so look out for signs  at the entrance or listen for stewards and staff instructing where you should go.

How to use the Copenhagen Card on public transport

Using the Bus with the Copenhagen Card

This one had us a little confused at first and took three different staff members for us to understand how to use our cards but lucky for you we can share this knowledge. We watched locals and visitors alike purchase tickets for the trains and metros at the airport and then even more swipe cards on terminals on the platforms which thoroughly confused us. The last thing we wanted to do was end up as fair dodgers because we had simply misunderstood but it turns out you, mainly, do nothing.

Yep, unlike attractions you do NOT need to receive a ticket from an outlet to travel on the public transport. While commuters may swipe cards before getting on the trains or at the front of a bus you do not need to do this with your Copenhagen Card. Keep your card handy on trains or metro lines and if a ticket inspector asks simply show them the card. On buses show your card to the driver when you get on and you’re sorted. Unfortunately, we did not get a public transport ferry during out stay in Copenhagen but I can only assume this would be the same process where you will simply show the card to a staff member if requested.

Is a Copenhagen Card worth it?

For our three day stay in Copenhagen ? – absolutely YES . And here’s a couple of reasons why….

The ease of having the card was a big bonus for us. If you’re a nervous traveller or simply not a fan of interactions this card is great for not having to deal with multiple systems and payments.  It also instantly identifies you as a tourist which can often make people more friendly towards you and offer help.

Frederiksborg Slot in Hillerod is included in the Copenhagen Card

The inclusion of all public transport in the Greater Copenhagen area makes the card fantastic value for anyone planning trips out to any of the less central attractions. Similarly, if you’re not up for a lot of walking or, like us, just want to pack as much into a short space of time then unlimited public transport really helps you squeeze more into a day. The ability to pick up your card on arrival at the airport and the addition of airport transport, which is not typically included in such cards, means you are saving from arrival to departure too! As we travelled during the winter months the freedom and flexibility to jump on public transport rather than walk in the cold, wet weather was also a fantastic option.

And of course the big one, in terms of cost we saved around £210 | €236 | 1758 DKK  by using the Copenhagen Card! That is a massive chunk of money and we certainly wouldn’t have departed with that much on our short visit. One of the great things about the Copenhagen Card website is that you can favourite all the attractions you plan to visit and how long your visit is and it will let you know how much you could save before you buy. This way you can see before you even purchase if this is the card for you.

Hans Christian Anderson Museum

With lots of family friendly attractions including the zoo, aquarium and local science centre we think these card would be a pretty good option for family excursions as well. As children under the age of nine can use a parent’s, this card seems excellent value for family groups.

Another plus that we found in the terms and conditions is that even if you do manage to lose your card, you can get a free replacement during you stay as long as you purchase direct and not from a third party which certainly adds peace of mind to anyone prone to setting things down and wandering away!

Any down sides to the Copenhagen Card?

Like all tourist destinations, opening hours will vary between peak and off-peak seasons and so while there are many attractions included in the cards, you will need to double check if your planned attractions will be open during your stay. Many places will have reduced opening hours in winter and so you’ll need some extra research time to figure out how much you can fit in and if the card is worth it for you. Lots of attractions are also closed on Sundays and Mondays so this is something to take into account both when planning your trip but also for how many days to buy Copenhagen Card for. That said, our visit was in winter and included a Monday and while we needed a little more planning to compensate for lots of attractions that were only open 11 am – 3 pm and shut on Mondays but we still managed to visit 9 attractions in three days so it was still worth it for us.

While included in our Copenhagen Card, we only experienced the outside of Amalienborg Palace as we visited on a Monday

Another thing to watch out for is specifics of what is included. One of the questions that kept cropping up when we were doing our research was “Is Tivoli included in the Copenhagen Card?”. This is because Tivoli is one of the big attractions advertised on the card but the card overs only the entrance to the amusement park and not the rides. Many people feel a little put out by this but there are lots of attractions to the park itself and so lots of visitors do enjoy exploring the gardens. If you do wish to go on the roller coasters and other rides you need to pay for them separately or purchase an unlimited day ticket direct from Tivoli Amusement Park.  As mentioned before, the card is not a fast track ticket.

One downside that others have noted on forum sites such as TripAdvisor is that while the Copenhagen Canal Tour is included in the card, Hop-On-Hop-Off Tour busses are not. While this would certainly help get more direct transport to the must-see sites of Copenhagen, we found the public transport options were generally pretty good and where we had to walk a little, this gave us more of a chance to see the pretty streets of the city.

Cycling in Copenhagen, Denmark

One of the big things to do in Copenhagen is hire a bike and cycle from place to place as the locals do. There are a plethora of bicycle hire places and a lot of accommodation options have their own facilities too. If you’re planning on getting around by bike it might be worth calculating the cost of bike hire and individual attractions yourself as the card may not be for you if you’re not going to use the unlimited transport.

Would we recommend the Copenhagen Card?

100%. Even considering some of the downsides, we found the card completely worth it and would certainly look into using it again on a return visit to see the attractions that we missed out on the first time.

It also looks like the tourist board are currently considering plans to extend the card to cover the whole of the Zealand area and possibly include an option for travel to Malmo, Sweden which would be an exciting addition should it come into play. At present cards will only cover the Greater Copenhagen area.

Have you ever used a tourist card to explore a city? Did you find it worth the cost?

We bought our Copenhagen Cards out of our own pockets but would highly recommend them to any traveller heading to Copenhagen .

Save with the Copenhagen Card on Transportation and Sightseeing Tickets

Visitors save with the cheap Copenhagen Card on sightseeing and tickets, especially when traveling by public transportation in Denmark.

The Marmorkirken (marble church) in Copenhagen seen from the old harbor quays near the Amalienborg royal palace.

The Copenhagen Card is a typical European city visitor’s pass that includes free admission to major sights, a travel card for public transportation, and further discounts on sights, events, experiences, tours, and restaurants. Active sightseeing, especially at the more expensive sites, can lead to big savings with the longer validity cards (up to 120 hours), particularly good value. The Copenhagen Card is also a very good deal for families with smaller children.

Using the Copenhagen Card

Save with the Copenhagen Cards

The Copenhagen Card covers admission to all major tourist sights in Copenhagen, public transportation in the city and northern Zealand region, and discounts for many experiences and restaurants.

Almost all major sights in Copenhagen are included for free admission on the Copenhagen Card. Major cultural sights and museums covered by the Copenhagen Card include amongst others the National Gallery of Denmark (SMK), the National Museum , and the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek . As are many sights in the larger Copenhagen region including, for example, all major sights in Helsingør / Elsinore (e.g. Hamlet’s Kronberg Castle), Frederiksborg Castle , the Louisiana , and Arken modern art museums, as well as the Viking Ship Museum and the magnificent Cathedral in Roskilde .

Top Royal sights in Copenhagen are also covered — the Renaissance Rosenborg Castle with the treasury and Danish crown jewels and the Amalienborg Palace .

Several experiences are also included in the Copenhagen Card such as the Visit Carlsberg beer brewery, Tivoli Gardens amusement park (ride tickets are extra), aquariums, and Copenhagen Zoo .

The views from the Christiansborg Palace tower are free but the more famous Rundetaarn Tower and Town Hall Tower are covered. Admission to churches in Copenhagen is free but the card gives access to the tower of the Vor Frelser Kirke in Christianshavn with its famous external staircase.

The Copenhagen Card also covers admission to many smaller and specialized museums making it worth at least peaking in for a quick visit e.g. the Museum of Copenhagen , the Medical Museion , the adjacent Design Museum , the Thorvaldsen Museum , the Danish Music Museum , the Odrupgaard Art Museum , and the Architect Centre.

Several further sights, tours, bicycle rental, and restaurants also give small discounts.

Free Transportation on the Copenhagen Card

The Copenhagen Card also includes public transportation for the larger Copenhagen region. This includes travel to amongst others Copenhagen Airport , Roskilde , Køge, Hillerød ( Frederiksborg Castle ), and Helsingør .

Travelers may use the Copenhagen metro, buses, harbor bus boats, S-trains (red), and regional trains. Some canal sightseeing cruise boats (not all companies participate) and lake boats may also be used. (Crossing the bridge from the airport to Sweden is not included!)

GetYourGuide

Saving with the Copenhagen Card

Huge savings with the Copenhagen Card are possible but largely depend on which sights are seen and if public transportation is used. The Copenhagen Card included public transportation for the larger Copenhagen regions, which usually cost DKK160 per day (City Pass Large 1-99), but many sights in central Copenhagen are easily reached on foot, or covered by a cheaper DKK80 City Pass Small 1-4 day ticket (buy at any metro station vending machine).

A handy app on the Copenhagen Card website allows visitors to easily pick sights and whether public transportation is required to compare prices with, and without, a Copenhagen Card. On an active day of sightseeing, most visitors will save using the card.

The card is valid once per attraction, irrespective of the duration of the card. (The previous once per day rule was scrapped.) However, it is still possible to enter a big site such as Tivoli , the National Museum , or Den Blå Planet aquarium, during the last minutes of validity and stay for hours.

Buying the Copenhagen Card

GetYourGuide

The Copenhagen Card is available for adults and children (ages 10 to 15) in four versions:

  • 24-hour card – DKK419 (DKK209)
  • 48-hour card – DKK619 (DKK309)
  • 72-hour card – DKK759 (DKK379)
  • 120-hour card – DKK999 (DKK499)

Two children younger than 10, i.e. aged 0 – 9 years, may accompany an adult for free on transportation and all sights.

Buy the Copenhagen Card at the service center at Copenhagen Airport, the tourist information office or Tivoli Box Office, or probably the easiest from many of the larger hotels in Copenhagen. It is generally not sold directly at attractions. It may also be bought online, e.g. from Get Your Guide but printed confirmation vouchers must be swapped for the physical card at tourist offices, easiest at the airport, main train station, or at Tivoli (when open). A mobile phone version is also available for immediate use.

Savings Tip: Buy the Copenhagen Card early in the year – prices usually increase in April but already purchased cards remain valid until the end of the year.

Apply the date and first full hour before using the card. The card only has to be valid at the time of entry to a site (or train) making it easy to extend any card by a few hours but don’t get stuck in admission queues at the critical moment!

The card must be shown to bus drivers when entering.

Many sights, especially museums, are closed on Monday and not all sights and experiences are open year-round.

Families Save with the Copenhagen Card

Chinese pagoda at Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen

Families with smaller children may save the most with the Copenhagen Card as two children younger than 10 years travel for free with a paying adult. Although many sights are free to children anyway and children under 12 travel for free on public transportation if accompanied by a paying adult, families can save big when visiting some of the more expensive sights.

These are usually the ones aimed at families: an adult with two children almost break even on a 24-hour Copenhagen Card if visiting the Copenhagen Zoo or Den Blå Planet (National Aquarium) and will be ahead if using public transportation en route. A visit to  Tivoli afterward saves another DKK300 or so. All three sites on a 48-hour card can save around DKK900.
