Temperatures soar in the heart of the Hawaiian summer. If you love the heat, August is perfect for your travels with temperatures averaging the high 80s. At night, you will avoid the cooler evenings of the winter and spring, which can dip into the 60s. Instead, August evenings remain balmy in the 70s. That makes it perfect for evening strolls, luaus, and other outdoor activities.

August is one of Hawaii’s drier months with less rain to be expected during your stay. Promising zero rain is impossible, especially in the tropics. It is still safe to say that the odds of rain showers decrease when traveling in August. You might encounter some disappointment if you plan to visit the waterfalls found throughout the islands. Less rain means less water, which can diminish the cascading effect of the waterfalls.  

If your activities and sightseeing take you to higher ground, the higher you go, the colder the temperatures. Trips to the many mountains and volcanoes of Hawaii usually require a jacket and pants. One more word of warning: August and September are hurricane season in the Pacific. Although hurricanes are rare in Hawaii, it is better to know all the facts before you commit to a date.

August is one of the three busiest months for tourists in Hawaii. The main reason for the increase is that school is still out, making August a favorite time for family travel. For the most part, the first two weeks are the busiest. By mid-August, parents have already set their sights on getting the kids back to school.

As with crowds, the beginning of the month tends to peak when it comes to hotel rates. If you want better deals, you should look towards the end of the month when prices start to drop well below the annual average of about $375.

Airfares seem to follow the same pricing trends with higher rates earlier in the month and dropping as the month winds down. However, despite the drop, prices still tend to be higher than other times of the year, as airfares, in general, are higher in the summer months. If your budget is on your mind, it makes more sense to book your trip later in the month to see some price breaks for both hotel and airfare.

August is a favorite time for festivals and events, but attractions vary from year to year. In August, some of the annual events include:

• Ho’oku’ikahi Establishment Day Hawaiian Cultural Festival : This annual event takes place on the Big Island each year showcasing the ancient culture of Hawaii with over 20 ancient arts and craft workshops, demonstrations, Hawaiian games, and traditional Hawaiian music.
• 30 Days of Aloha on Hawaii Island : This annual festival presents the cultural traditions and “aloha spirit” of the Big Island with events taking place throughout the month.
• Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament : If you love fishing, this five-day international tournament is an annual highlight. You can fish in Kona’s famous waters on first-class charter boats. You will also rub elbows with fishing legends fighting for the prestigious HIBT Governor’s trophy.
• Duke’s OceanFest : Lovers of water sports can’t miss this annual Oahu event celebrating longboard surfing, paddleboard racing, swimming, tandem surfing, surf polo, beach volleyball, and stand-up paddling.
• Made in Hawaii Festival : Oahu features hundreds of exhibitors who are showcasing Hawaiian food products, books, gifts, apparel and jewelry, arts and crafts, produce, and an assortment of other unique home-grown products.
• Heiva I Kauai International Tahitian Dance Competition : Kauai’s annual Tahitian dance and drumming competition is a cultural event celebrating the art of dance and music. It is renowned for its colorful displays and the community feel. Participation is encouraged by all who attend.

August offers pleasingly warm temperatures but also introduces a low risk for hurricanes. For travel costs, you will see lower rates for both airfare and hotels near the end of the month.

Hawaii Island is the largest of the islands and sits at the southernmost part of the chain. A temperamental youngest sibling of the family, this island is full of drama, adventure, and natural beauty. The Best of Hawaii begins and ends in the U.S.

Real ID Act - Effective May 7, 2025

Beginning in May 2025, some state IDs will no longer permit you to board a domestic flight. Currently, some states are compliant, some have received extensions, and some are not compliant.  Click here  to see the status of your state. If your state license is not compliant, you can use a passport in lieu of a valid state ID. 

Please Note:  The federal government has extended the deadline to May 7, 2025 for domestic airline passengers to secure a Real ID driver's license for use as identification at the airport. Travelers without a verified license or ID card will also have the option of showing other identity documents, such as a passport or military ID to board a plane.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling to the U.S., you should contact an embassy or consulate of the U.S. to determine what travel documentation is necessary. You may also log on to the U.S. State Department's Internet site by clicking here.

If you are traveling by air to join and/or depart from this tour within the U.S., please read the section entitled Airline Security Measures under Additional Information above to determine what travel documentation is required.

Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

• Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.
• Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement to catch up to your tour or return home.
• Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
• Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip. 
• Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
• Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $449  per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

In the event of an unforeseen circumstance beyond our control,  Tauck reserves the right to amend the cancellation terms outlined herein.

Note:  All Guests, regardless of residency, who book a Tauck journey have the option of purchasing the Cancellation Fee Waiver provided by Tauck in the event they need to cancel their trip after making their reservations. Tauck's Guest Protection, which includes both the Cancellation Fee Waiver and the Travel Insurance Benefits and Assistance Services described above, is not available to residents of Puerto Rico.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Special Luggage Restrictions for this Tour

The U.S. TSA has instituted standardized screening procedures at airports across the U.S. At some airports in Hawaii, this procedure is handled manually and will be time-consuming. Please be aware that you will not have access to your bags after they are screened; therefore, you should remove everything that you may want to take on the plane with you before you hand over your checked bag for screening.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

Please Note:  Destinations around the world have instituted new measures like testing requirements, health insurance coverage, or specific restrictions on travel. VACCINATIONS  

If you are a resident of another country traveling to or within the U.S., no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Hawaii. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here.

While your journey to Hawaii is very relaxing and the pace leisurely, to enjoy fully all the tour has to offer, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, as some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. For the most part, however, the amount of walking you do is at your discretion.

If you require the use of a wheelchair throughout the tour, it is advisable to bring your own. Wheelchairs are available on all islands at all hotels and may be arranged by the tour directors; however, they are intended for on-site use and cannot be taken off property. In addition, wheelchairs are available at the airports for pre-boarding purposes only. There are disabled access bathrooms with grab bars in all of the hotels.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Regarding Portable Oxygen

The Best of Hawaii tours travel to Haleakala National Park on Maui, an elevation of 10,023 ft (3,055 m). The motor coach drivers and Tauck Directors do forewarn guests with heart and respiratory problems of the elevation and that they may encounter sulfur fumes from the volcano. Specific information concerning volcanic emissions in the state of Hawaii may be found by clicking here .

Oxygen is not carried aboard motor coaches and the drivers are not certified to administer oxygen. Oxygen is a hazardous material as the container is compressed. You are allowed to carry your own providing it does not exceed one hundred pounds per one unit. You need to have proper training on how to use it, and your companion must also be certified in case you are rendered unconscious. A prescription from a doctor plus proof of certification from the Red Cross on how to use it is needed for any purchase of oxygen. It is recommended that you carry the proper paperwork along with your personal supply in case additional canisters are required while on tour. You are responsible for any maintenance and operation that the tank requires while on tour, and for locating what facilities exist on the tour itinerary which can perform tank maintenance. You are also responsible for emptying the tank prior to embarking all tour planes, floatplanes, or helicopters and refilling the tank at a designated facility. You will need to provide us with the exact specifications of the tank, including size, model, and all components that accompany it, prior to booking the tour to determine motor coach storage capabilities.

If you require oxygen on inter-island flights, Hawaiian Airlines stipulates that you MUST have a doctor's certificate written within 30 days of travel. This certificate must include the rate of flow (meters per minute) and whether you require a mask or nasal cannula. This certificate needs to be sent to the Hawaiian Airlines office at least 48 hours in advance of the flight. There are 3 on-tour flights on this tour. Once you have requested the airline for oxygen you MUST use it. Hawaiian Airlines flights reach a cruising altitude of between 12-24,000 ft (3,657 to 7,315 m), become pressurized at 5,000 ft (1,524 m) and average 78°F (26°C).

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

The temperature in Hawaii averages 75 ºF (24 ºC) all year long. An average high temperature of 83 ºF (28 ºC) is reached in August. What To Pack

We suggest you dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is flexible and allows for layering. Casual, cotton clothing is recommended. Women often dress in bright pastels or other vibrant hues. Sun hats, aloha shirts and floral print muumuus are customarily worn and are readily found in stores on all the islands. For fine dining, dresses are recommended, as are light wraps for evenings. For men, coats and ties are rarely worn in hotels, but "aloha shirts" and dress pants are perfectly acceptable. Men are requested to wear long pants in the evening.

Bathrobes, hairdryers, irons and ironing boards are provided in each hotel guest room.

Valet laundry and dry-cleaning services are available at all the hotels on this itinerary.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription, or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Introduced to Hawaii by Japanese immigrants, the Obon Dance and Festival hosts a variety of games for the kids, crafts, food, and bon odori dancing. 

There are several locations on the island that host these festivals on different days.

If you are interested in learning more about plants and native species in Hawaii, a visit to the  Kula Botanical Garden  is a must. 

Sitting at an elevation of 3,300 feet and featuring a collection of semi-tropical and tropical plants, the garden is beautiful. Not only can you explore the plants, but there are also rock formations, waterfalls, a koi pond, and a covered bridge. 

This 8-acre oasis offers tours, a gift shop, and more. Enjoy a nice native plant walk during these summer months when you visit Maui!

2. Molokini Crater

If you have never been on a snorkel adventure inside a sunken Hawaiian volcano, now is the time. 

Check out the  Molokini Crater  and its bright coral reef, crystal clear waters, and over 250 species of tropical fish.

They put me on a chair in between two men, one overweight who was almost falling on top of me, and the other was even uncomfortable because I was half falling because of what the other was pushing me. We were told that our flight would be delayed for 90+ minutes because of weather, so we went to get something to eat only to have them randomly start boarding 15 minutes after the announcement, with no warning.

Entertainment... No earphones passed out. Many including me couldn't use the TV. Legroom was good. Crew was indifferent and a bit surly. Free wifi was a nice convenience. Check in desk location was unknown. Gate number on the boarding passes was wrong.

Going through JFK’s security is a mess. The TSA security said no shoes on the bins. So, we place our shoes in the belt and they came out all over the belt. Boarding was delayed and Flight as well.

It is a modern tragedy that any airline expects you to travel for 14 hours in such discomfort and that the only way to add comfort is exorbitant prices. I was in pain by the time we landed. Shameful.

No real agent onsite helping you for missing luggage there. Not like the other airline next to UA desk, they have staff attending in their desk assisting answer/helping luggage issue, even after midnight.

After the morning frenzy of 35 min wait through CLT security at 4;30 AM, it was nice to have a smooth pleasant boarding experience. This 6:30 AM flight was not full. We were able to get seated swiftly and took off promptly. Nice touch they distributed the old fashioned headsets with 8 mm jacks. Snacks were decent and arrival was uneventful.

My window shade didn’t work. So I missed coming into my city. ☹️

Flight was delayed due to the late arrival of the catering truck, which is quite unacceptable. There was a beverage service, but no pretzel, or cookie, or nuts were served in coach.

Paid for premium economy had no tv the whole time the crew tried to reset/reboot but would not work they said they would put a trouble ticket in for it. They cancelled our flight re worked us on another that left us at airport over night on the floor I have a ten year old and a 78 diabetic mother which also had shingles and suffers from nerve pain in legs and back. Requested wheelchair service at all airports after the re route NO wheelchair service was there to help. WORST experience we have ever had. Went to American airlines assistance it was closed. I AM FURIOUS!!! I expect some sort of compensation from this traumatic experience and no need for flying points we don't plan on using American airlines again!!!!

This is by far the worst experience I have had with American Airlines. The start of this trip was a complete disaster. I purposely planned my trip so that I would weather any delays so that I could make very important meeting at the Pentagon. My flight was cancelled because of maintenance and I was put on the first flight the next day but I was late to the meeting. After a long week at the Pentagon I just wanted to go home and my flight home which was early in the day was delayed. Eventually the flight was delayed until the next day. I was not authorized a hotel room because DCA was my point of origin. So I paid for a hotel out of pocket. The flight this morning was boarded then deplaned because the aircraft was hot. The flow of information was not happening in DCA and made it worse when the news was bad. I am going to take a break from American for my next few military flights. Hopefully whatever has been going on with American Airlines will be resolved.

We had a 2 hour delay. The seats were smaller than most other airlines. The person in front of us wanted to lay back and we had to stop her because she was pressing against my girlfriend’s legs. We had to ask her to sit up and not lay back due to the lack of room.

I strongly dislike Frontier. I find them barebones, the seats not particularly comfortable, the nickel and diming is maddening, the app is TERRIBLE - super confusing to navigate, and the last 4 frontier flights I have flown have been on AVERAGE 2 hours late, one ruining a fancy night out in Vegas with reservations made well in advance, which was nodded to with a measly 5000 miles, which translates to almost nothing. At least credit a free checked bag or something.

FRONTIER SUCKS! The agent downstairs tricked me into booking, just to get to the gate. At the gate, they told me they couldn't help. I then called Customer Service. They and the gate attendants kept blaming each other. Neither side was willing to help the customer.

Climate change can be vacation complication for visitors to Savannah, other coastal areas

Climate change cares little about convenience. 

Or your summer vacations. 

That’s why weather-related events fueled by a warming planet are impacting ― and in some cases, imperiling ― leisure travelers like never before. 

Visitors to Hawaii’s resort-rich island of Maui found that out late last summer when nature threw a climatological curveball. 

Isolated in the warm Pacific Ocean nearly 3,000 miles west of Mexico, Maui and the rest of Hawaii’s islands are accustomed to severe tropical weather. 

Last August, Hurricane Dora missed Hawaii by hundreds of miles as it passed to the south, but remnants of its powerful winds still buffeted Maui and fanned flames that torched more than 2,000 acres turned to tinder in extremely dry weather. 

The fire claimed 115 lives and destroyed 2,200 buildings. 

It also triggered thousands of cancellations from travelers who had booked vacations on the island in the following weeks and months. 

A sudden change in vacation plans pales in comparison to the loss of life, of course. But the tragic Lahaina fire and confluence of phenomenon behind it are reminders that nature ― infused with energy by climate change ― is becoming increasingly unpredictable. 

That means booking a trip to Savannah and the South Carolina Lowcountry, where hurricane season coincides with the height of summer tourist traffic, is not quite as safe a bet as it used to be, experts say. 

"Climate change significantly impacts the frequency and severity of extreme weather events, including hurricanes,” explained Alejandro Del Valle, a Georgia State University economics professor who studies the financial impact of severe weather. “Vacationing in areas prone to such events, like the Georgia coast during hurricane season, carries increased financial risks.” 

This year, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is forecasting an estimated 17 to 25 named Atlantic storms (with winds of at least 39 mph), eight to 13 hurricanes (74 to 110 mph) and four to seven major hurricanes (at least 111 mph).  

The Savannah area has not experienced a direct blow from a hurricane since 1979, when David packed 90-mph winds that toppled trees, took down power lines and left 75,000 customers of what was then known as Savannah Electric in the dark. But even a near miss, such as Hurricane Matthew in 2016 , can cause significant storm surge and property damage, and claim lives.

Still, there have been many more misses than hits. 

The possibility of a storm can leave potential travelers to coastal areas such Savannah and Hilton Head Island in a vacation no man’s land.  

“For example, the Weather Channel s pends five days harping on the possibility of a hurricane hitting our area,” explained Joseph Marinelli, president and CEO of Visit Savannah . “After repeatedly seeing the threat on TV, the consumer decides to cancel or ‘no-show’ because of the threat or concern. Then the ‘hurricane’ instead turns into a minor rain event.” 

The traveler asks for a refund but the host refuses because the room can’t be resold. 

“Yeah, it’s a tough one,” Marinelli said of the situation. 

In fact, climate change could make that kind of dilemma even more common. 

Ready or not? Experts fear hurricane complacency in Savannah ahead of expected active season

In hot water 

While heightened storm activity increases the odds of a hurricane hitting a particular area, a recent trend in tropical cyclones has added what climate experts consider a frightening new wrinkle. 

Oceans absorb most of the heat trapped in the atmosphere by pollution released when fossil fuels are burned for energy or transportation. 

The trend led to record-high Atlantic temperatures in 2023, and this year’s readings are pointing to another all-time record. 

That’s because warmer oceans pump more energy into storms, causing them to intensify. In some cases, the speed of those power surges is alarming experts.  

In August of last year, Hurricane Idalia’s sustained winds strengthened by 55 mph in a 24-hour period as it moved through the Gulf of Mexico before making landfall in Florida and eventually causing damage when as its remnants passed over coastal Georgia.  

Nearly one-third of the more than three-dozen named storms in the Atlantic and Pacific basins combined last year experienced “ rapid intensification ” when their wind speeds increased by at least 35 mph in 24 hours.  

The trend dilutes forecasters’ ability to accurately predict how strong storms will be when they make landfall.   

“For travelers, the inability to foresee and plan for extreme weather events, such as rapidly intensifying hurricanes, can result in unexpected health hazards and disrupted travel plans,” Del Valle said. “This unpredictability will likely force travelers to consider where to travel more carefully, plan in case of an emergency and consider purchasing travel insurance.” 

Insurance offers financial insulation from the whims of nature. The price for a typical policy is generally 5% to 6% of the trip's total cost, although a traveler’s age can factor into the total. 

"Travel insurance is important for anyone planning a summer or fall vacation,” said Montrae Waiters, a spokeswoman for AAA Georgia . “If severe weather interferes with your travel plans, there are travel insurance policies that reimburse you for covered losses associated with flight delays and cancellations. They can also provide partial or full reimbursement of non-refundable deposits on hotels, cruises, and excursions.” 

However, climate change will likely have an outsized impact on trip coverage, just as it has on home coverage in areas battered by past storms and prone to being hit again, Del Valle predicted. 

“Travel insurance for high-risk areas due to extreme weather events is becoming increasingly unaffordable,” he said. “As climate change intensifies, insurers adjust their risk assessments and pricing models, leading to higher premiums for destinations prone to extreme weather.” 

Some insurers may bale from high-risk markets entirely, Del Valle added. 

But climate change also is affecting travel in unexpected places. 

Late last summer, 70,000 people attending the Burning Man festival in the Nevada desert were stranded by, of all things, severe flooding from an unexpected deluge.  

Also last summer, travelers to New York City experienced what was classified as the worst air quality in the world when smoke from Canadian wildfires hundreds of miles away shrouded the area and obscured the iconic skyline.

Be prepared

In the end, it's up to travelers to protect themselves against weather-related events, said Del Valle. 

“First, familiarize yourself with the area you are visiting and the risks it faces from natural disasters,” he suggested. "And choose travel dates outside known high-risk seasons, such as avoiding the hurricane season for coastal destinations.” 

He also recommended making refundable bookings, being flexible with travel dates and, of course, buying insurance, he added. 

“But it's crucial to read the contract carefully to understand what is covered and when,” he cautioned. “Purchase the policy ahead of your trip (because) buying insurance after a storm has been named will not cover that event.” 

When reaching the destination, come up with an emergency plan, and make sure to have essential supplies and medications on hand. 

And finally, now more than ever, expect the unexpected.
