• When checking-in at the airport, you will be requested to display a “visa issuance notice” on your device. Travel agency will provide you a "Visa Issuance Notice" (printed or pdf data) with two dimensional barcode.
• Scan the two dimensional barcode with your device and enter the required information to display the notice.
• By tapping “Display“, the electronic "visa issuance notice" appears and the countdown timer shown at the top right starts immediately. This countdown proves that the notice is valid.

Japan Online Visa for Citizens of India

Japan is often a top destination for both tourism and business travel. Indian citizens who wish to visit Japan require a visa .

The temporary visitor visa grants Indian nationals permission to stay in Japan for up to 90 days . This type of Japan tourist visa is meant for short-term business trips, visits to friends and family, or general tourism in Japan.

The New Japan e-Visa for Indian Citizens

There will soon be a new electronic visa (eVisa) for visits to Japan from India . The government of Japan has indicated that they will start rolling this out starting in 2020 .

To apply for the Japan eVisa for Indian citizens , travelers will require a valid passport as well as some other supporting documents . No longer will applicants have to visit the Japanese embassy to obtain their application form and apply since the process will be entirely online.

Japan Tourist eVisa requirements from India

The application asks for some personal details , which should be entered exactly as they appear on the passport. The applicant must provide details about their trip, such as dates of travel, the purpose of travel, port of entry, and the travel company (ship or airline) with which the applicant is traveling. Lastly, the application requires details of where the traveler will stay while they are in Japan .

The applicant is also required to answer a series of questions related to any past criminal history or immigration violations.

Japan Online Visa Requirements from India

Applicants should review the list of visa requirements in order to prepare their Japan visa application . If two or more people will be traveling together for the same purpose, they can apply together.

For a typical Japan tourist visa from India , applicants will need to prepare the following items:

• A valid Indian passport , signed, with 2 blank visa pages
• The completed visa application form
• A recent passport-sized photo with a white background
• A recent bank certificate and latest income tax return to prove sufficient funds for the trip
• If someone else will be funding the travel, the sponsor will need to submit additional documents with the application. This includes a letter of guarantee, a document which proves the relationship to the applicant , and a copy of the sponsor’s bank certificate and income tax return
• An itinerary of travel plans in Japan . This should include dates, activities, contact person and accommodation
• A hotel confirmation and flight tickets including a return trip to India

Depending on the type of visa and the situation of the traveler, the application may require additional documents :

• Students must include a parental consent form plus a bank certificate and a copy of parent’s tax return
• Those traveling with a dependent must submit an official document proving the relationship This can be either a marriage or a birth certificate
• If traveling to Japan on an invitation from a business contact or family member, the person who invited them will need to submit a formal letter
• Visitors traveling to Japan on business need to provide a copy of the business registration and their employment contract

Japan e-Visa Application from India

Before the eVisa is available, Indian travelers will have to download the forms and submit them to an Application Center in India .

The application form is available online as well as in person at the Embassy in New Delhi , or at the Japanese Consulate General locations in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, or Bengaluru. Of course, once the eVisa is made available, the applicant can go online to submit the Japanese travel visa application.

The most common visa types issued by Japan are for the purposes of short-term tourism and short-term business travel. Japan introduces e-Visa for Indian tourists: From eligibility criteria to application process, here's a complete guide

Japan has streamlined its visa process for indian travellers with the introduction of evisas. here's your quick guide to the hassle-free application process..

Indian passport holders no longer need to carry a physical visa sticker to travel to Japan. From April 1, Japan began issuing eVisas to Indian travellers. The much-awaited Japan e-Visa programme allows anyone to apply for a visa electronically through Japan Visa Application Centres operated by VFS Global. This programme allows visitors to enter Japan for up to 90 days for tourism purposes.

Under the revised system, applicants must still submit their applications to the Visa Application Centres overseen by VFS Global, which is the same process as before. However, one notable change is in the way visas are issued. Instead of receiving traditional visa stickers affixed to their passports, successful applicants will now receive electronic visas. The e-Visa process requires travellers to present a 'visa issuance notice' on their mobile device upon arrival at the airport. It's important to note that internet access is required for this process. Any format other than a digital visa issuance notice, including PDFs, photos, screenshots or printed copies, will not be considered valid.

What are the eligibility criteria

Citizens and residents of the following countries and regions are eligible: Brazil, Taiwan, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, South Africa, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Cambodia, Saudi Arabia, USA. Additionally, Indian citizens and foreign nationals residing in India are also included in the eligibility criteria. Residents of these countries or regions, with exceptions for those exempt from short-term visas, can apply for an eVisa through the Japan e-Visa website.

How to apply

Here's a step-by-step guide to the application process:

Step 1: To initiate the application process, individuals should access the official website of the Japan Visa Application Centre, managed by VFS Global, by visiting https://visa.vfsglobal.com/ind/en/jpn/.

Step 2: Choose the "Temporary Visitor Visa" option and review all visa requirements carefully. Download the application form, fill it out accurately, and print it. Ensure all fields are completed. Additionally, prepare photocopies of the required documents for the single-entry short-term tourism visa.

Step 3: Schedule an appointment to submit your application at the Visa Application Centre. Once booked, you'll receive a confirmation email for your appointment, which will include the letter of appointment.

Step 4: Submit your completed visa application form at the center during your appointment. Then, wait for an email notification informing you when your decision is ready for collection. You can track the progress of your visa application online using the reference number provided on your invoice or receipt. Approved applicants for the eVisa will receive an electronic visa instead of a physical visa sticker. However, travelers are required to show a "visa issuance notice" on their mobile devices upon arrival at the airport.

Step 5: At the airport check-in, display the "visa issuance notice" on your device. The travel agency will furnish a "Visa Issuance Notice" inclusive of a two-dimensional barcode. Scan the barcode using your device and input the required details to access the notice. Tap "Display" to view the electronic "visa issuance notice."

During the application process, individuals may be required to appear in person at the Japanese overseas establishment with jurisdiction over the applicant's place of residence for an interview.

Japan Tourist E-Visa for Indians: Effective April 1, 2024, onwards, Japan has commenced the issuance of eVisas for Indian tourists, the newly introduced system that eliminates the need for physical visa stickers in passports.

This innovative programme enables applicants to electronically apply for visas through designated Japan Visa Application Centres operated by VFS Global. Specifically tailored for tourism purposes, the Japan eVisa offers a single-entry short-term visa allowing a stay of up to 90 days in Japan. 

The eligibility extends to both Indian citizens and foreign nationals residing in India, and the application process remains centralised through the Visa Application Centres managed by VFS Global, streamlining the procedure.

For Indian citizens seeking a Japan tourist visa, h ere is how to initiate the Japan visa application process:

Step 1: visit the official website..

• To start the application, individuals need to visit the Japan Visa Application Centre’s official website, managed by VFS Global, at https://visa.vfsglobal.com/ind/en/jpn/ .

Step 2: Download and fill out the application form.

• Click on this link and choose  Temporary Visitor Visa .
• Check all the requirements for the visa and download the visa application form from the website.
• Complete the form accurately, print it in its entirety, and ensure all required fields are filled.
• Prepare photocopies of the necessary documents for the single-entry short-term tourism visa.

Step 3: Book an appointment.

• Schedule an appointment to submit your application at the Visa Application Centre.
• Upon booking, one will receive an appointment confirmation email containing the letter of appointment.

Step 4: Apply and await the decision.

• Present the completed visa application form at the centre during your appointment.
• Wait for an email notification indicating when your decision is ready for collection at the Visa Application Centre.
• Track the visa application status online using the reference number from the invoice or receipt issued by the centre, along with your date of birth.

• During airport check-in, you will need to show the “visa issuance notice” on your device. The travel agency will provide you with a “Visa Issuance Notice” containing a two-dimensional barcode, available in printed or PDF format.
• Scan the two-dimensional barcode using your device and input the necessary details to access the notice.
• Tap “Display” to view the electronic “visa issuance notice.” Upon display, a countdown timer will initiate at the top right corner, indicating the validity of the notice.

By adhering to these guidelines and fulfilling the stipulated criteria, Indian travellers can smoothly navigate the process to secure a Japan tourist e-visa, enhancing their travel experience in Japan.

A 12-Day Detailed Itinerary For Japan Under ₹80,000 Trip Cost

I was always fancied by Japan in multiple ways. And after having been enticed by its culture and food through videos for over a year, I finally decided to experience its intrinsic culture in person. From a truly delectable traditional cuisine to the awe-inspiring Bullet train, it is amazing how Japan has managed to tie tradition and modernity with a single thread. It’s a perfect place for solo travellers, friends, couples and even families. Despite the language barrier, Japan surely knows how to mesmerize you. 

So, if you’re someone who has been fascinated by Japanese culture, or if you’ve grown up watching Anime, then count me as your friend! I am Yogita Chainani, a travel lover, and I went for a 12-day trip to Japan along with my sister in April 2019. We went to Tokyo, Kyoto and Nara, and this is how we planned our trip at ₹80,000. Here is our itinerary for Japan. 

Things To Keep In Mind While Planning A Trip To Japan

Flight Cost: We were tracking the flight costs for over a month before finally booking it. We booked the flight tickets through SkyScanner, and the return flights cost us ₹ 26,000 per person. 

Visa: When it comes to Visa, the process was quite simple. We paid ₹500 per person for a single entry visa, which was valid for a month.

Stay: Keeping the budget in mind, we chose to stay in a hostel over a hotel. For Tokyo, we booked the DEN hostel, which is nestled in the Kanda area of Tokyo and is around 50 minutes from Haneda airport. While travelling for 6 nights and 7 days, we paid ₹10,000 per head, which is decent for the quality of the place. In Kyoto, we booked the Len Kyoto hostel, and for 4 nights and 5 days where we paid ₹8,000 per head. As for Nara, we made a day trip, so we didn’t have to make any bookings. We used the HostelWorld app to book both the hostels. 

Transfers: Travelling in and around Japan is expensive. Hence, to save up on the travelling cost, we had bought a Japan Rail Pass for ₹18,000. The pass covered most of our travel expenses in the country. Right from local JR lines to selected Bullet train rides, everything got covered with this pass. Apart from this, for private buses and metros, we spent an additional ₹5,000 per person. For transfers from the airport to the hostel in Tokyo, we took a limousine bus, which cost ₹650 per person. 

Food: We set a budget, and roughly spent ₹4,000 (₹2,000 per person), which is about 6000 Japanese yen on food per day. Sometimes it was a bit more, and sometimes it was less. So, our overall food cost was ₹ 20,000 per person, which also included drinks. 

Best Time to Visit Japan: Japan is known for its Cherry Blossom season and if you intend to visit this futuristic country, then plan your trip between March-May. Not only March to May, but September to January is also an ideal time to visit Japan. The weather is quite pleasant, humidity is low, and the cold climate makes it easy for travellers to explore the place throughout the day. I travelled to Japan in April, and here’s my 12-days, day by day itinerary.

We boarded the 11PM flight from Terminal 2- Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai to Singapore Changi Airport, from where we took a connecting flight to Haneda Airport, Japan. We flew with Singapore Airlines, and I must say, it’s my favourite. The flight from Mumbai to Singapore was about 5 hours and 40 minutes. We had about an hour and 10 minutes of layover in Singapore, and the flight from here to Haneda was about 7 hours and 30 minutes. After reaching Haneda airport, we cleared our immigration, activated our Japan Rail Pass and took a limousine bus to reach Tokyo. The bus ticket cost us ₹630 per person. 

We checked in the hostel, DEN, on Day 1 and passed out immediately. The next day, we woke up early with the faint rays of the sun, got ready and spoke to our hostel manager, who guided us to the nearest metro station. Kanda metro station was at a walking distance from the hostel. On our way, we grabbed some hot coffee, sandwiches and a bottle of water from a nearby Seven-Eleven. These are convenience stores that are open 24×7. 

I must say Seven-Eleven is a hit in Japan, and right from a cup of Joe to hearty Ramen meals, you can find everything at an affordable rate. After sipping some coffee, we took a train to Harajuku station. Our first spot of the day was Takeshita Dori, which is located at a walking distance from Harajuku. 

Takeshita Dori will take you one step closer to the famous Japanese Pop and Kawaii Culture. Right from street artists to a plethora of picturesque cafes and side stalls, Takeshita is a street that you cannot miss. And while you are there, don’t forget to try the delicious crepes. From Chocolate to Bacon Crepe, there are tonnes of options to choose from. We had a lip-smacking crepe at Santa Monica Crepe, and it was worth every bite.

After spending a good 2-3 hours in Takeshita Dori, we explored the Harajuku area of Tokyo. For lunch, we kept it light and ate some Mozzarella Sticks from a roadside stall while sipping on some famous Japanese bubble tea. At around 5PM, we headed to the famous Meiji Jingu Shrine, which is known for its unmatchable beauty. The entry to the shrine is free, and the entrance from the massive Torii gate for this shrine will inevitably transport you to a different world.

After getting bewitched by the spellbinding magnificence of this shrine, we made our way back to Harajuku. We went for dinner to Cafe Lagoon in Harajuku and ended our night on a merry note. Post that- we headed back to our accommodation. 

For us, Day 3 was all about exploring the culture of Japan. Hence, we decided to explore the Asakusa area of Tokyo. We grabbed some coffee from Seven-Eleven and headed to Kanda station to board a metro for Asakusa. We got down at Asakusa station and walked for 10 minutes to reach the pristine Sensoji Temple and I can never forget that sight. Sensoji is one of the oldest temples in Japan, and the entry to the temple is free. 

We walked around the temple, observed the locals for a while and headed to Nakamise Dori, which was just 2 minutes from the Sensoji Temple. 

Nakamise Dori is known for its local cuisine, souvenirs shops and also gives you a stellar view of the Tokyo sky tree. By the time we finished exploring the street, it was already lunchtime. So we gave local Japanese cuisines a try and savoured some red bean, Hello Kitty Pancakes and Ramen in Nakamise Dori.

Post that, we headed straight to the Tourist Information Center of Japan, which again was a short walk from the temple. Tourist Information is also famous as an observatory. The entry to the observatory was free.

We bought some coffee from the cafe and observed the magnificent Tokyo skyline from the top. It was around 6:30 pm, and we decided to explore more of Asakusa. We manoeuvred around the area and headed back to the hostel by 12:30 am. 

After spending three glorious days in Japan, Tokyo had already become home. We woke up with lots of excitement, chit-chatted with our fellow hostellers and ventured out to visit the famous and the most luxurious street of Japan, Ginza. Right from Louis Vuitton to Prada, you’ll find all the high-end stores in here. We shopped a bit from Gap and Adidas, we got some top-notch quality products at insane prices.

After exploring Ginza, we went to Shibuya. While Shibuya is known for the world-famous Shibuya Crossing, it’s also known for Hachiko Statue, the beautiful Yoyogi Park and theme cafes. We explored the area, spent some time at Yoyogi Park and by that time, it was already evening. So we headed straight to witness the iconic Shibuya crossing- a crossing where hundreds of people – and at times thousands of people – cross at a time, coming from all directions at once.

Once done enjoying the Shibuya crossing, we shopped a bit from Zara and Forever 21 and headed to TGIF in Shibuya. We ate, shot some pictures for the gram and enjoyed the nightlife in Shibuya. 

On day 5, we decided to take it a bit slow. We chilled in our hostel for a while, interacted with fellow travellers from London, South Korea and Canada, and left the hostel at around 1PM for Shinjuku. We visited the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, which again is a famous observatory in Tokyo, and on a clear day, you get to witness the sight of Mount. Fuji from the observatory.

The entry to the observatory was free. We spent some time appreciating the majestic Tokyo skyline and then explored Shinjuku for a while before catching a bus for Akihabara.

If you love Anime and arcade games, then Akihabara is for you. I wanted to win at least one Dragonball toy, but I couldn’t, hard luck!  After the gaming session, we went to the famous Yodobashi Camera centre in Akihabara and shopped for some Bluetooth headphones. We ended the night by eating pizza, ramen and sipping some sake in Akihabara. 

This was the day when I shopped till I dropped, and I am not kidding. I had researched about outlet malls in Tokyo and had decided to buy things from there itself. The outlet mall was on the outskirts of Tokyo, but the ride was completely worth it. We boarded a train for Mitsui Outlet Mall at Tokyo Station and got down at Kaihin-Makuhari Station. From there the outlet mall was at a walking distance. There was a 60% off deal going on for all items in the mall. I treated myself to a Michael Kors wallet at flat 90% off.

We spent around 8 hours in the mall, and in the end, we were too exhausted to go anywhere else, so we ate something at McDonald’s, and headed back to our hostel.

It was our last day in Tokyo, and we wanted to make the most of it. We explored our neighbourhood, went to see the Tokyo Skytree and Tokyo Tower.  For us, we didn’t buy a ticket for the observatory since we had already enjoyed a free view of the majestic skyline from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building in Shinjuku. We visited a few cafes, tried some Matcha Ice Cream and headed back to the hostel.

The time had arrived to bid adieu to the vibrant city of Tokyo. With heavy hearts and a bucket full of memories to cherish for eternity, we checked out from our hostel, brought some snacks for our train ride and headed to Tokyo Station. And finally, we boarded the bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto.

It was a smooth and pleasant ride, and guess what – the bullet train had wifi too!

We reached Kyoto at around 5PM, and from there caught a bus for Kawaramachi- the area where our hostel was. It was 6 pm when we reached the hostel, we checked in, freshened up, spoke to our roommates and headed out to explore the Kawaramachi area of Kyoto.

For dinner, we ate some food at the hostel bar and called it a night. 

After exploring the nightlife and pop culture of Tokyo, it was time to experience a mellow version of Japan by exploring its former capital, Kyoto. We had planned a list of things, and hence we ventured out at 7.30AM itself. 

We grabbed a bite from the nearby Seven-Eleven and headed straight to the salient Arashiyama’s Bamboo Forest. The forest is both locally famous and world-renowned and the entry is free.

From dense forests to cherry blossoms to throbbing autumn Kyoto colours, Arashiyama was a visual delight during this season. We explored the tranquil forest area and visited a few other spots in the nearby locality.

Post that we headed to the famous Nishiki Market. Almost 400 years old, this place is a fresh food market and is lined with over a hundred restaurants and shops. The market was lively and allowed us to taste Japan’s culinary culture at its finest. After savouring some food and drinking some OG bubble tea, we headed back to our hostel, which was at a walking distance from the market.

We left early and headed to Fushimi Inari. This place is known for its tunnels of more than 10,000 closely-spaced orange torii gates that wind over the hills of Mt. Inari beyond the entrance to the shrine.

One can also dress like Geisha and explore this beautiful place. We went a bit late to this place and couldn’t grab good pictures.  But if you want to take some fab shots for the gram, then try visiting this place as early as possible.

After getting spellbind by the captivating beauty of this place, we headed to the famous Gion district of Kyoto. We manoeuvred around and got to know more about Geisha culture while exploring some beautiful alleys of Gion district.

We celebrated our time in Kyoto by tasting some Japanese beer and absorbed the traditional culture on the banks of Kyoto’s scenic main waterway. Post that, we went to the famous Pontocho Alley, where traditional culture and Geisha still thrive.

It was officially our last day in Kyoto. And since we were short on time, we boarded a train to Nara, which is known for its slow-paced life. On the way to Nara, we enjoyed the sight of the beautiful fields and quaint villages of Japan.

We visited the famous Kasuga Grand Shrine and also explored the old  Nara market. After exploring the streets of Nara for a few hours, we headed back to Kyoto. Post that, we ate something, packed our bags and slept early that day. 

We checked out of our hostel in Kyoto and headed to Kyoto station. We caught our bullet train for Tokyo station. After reaching Tokyo station, we again took an Airport liner for the Haneda Airport terminal. We spent the final few hours at the Haneda airport before bidding goodbye to the exalted country of Japan. 

Things I haven’t included: I went a bit crazy with shopping, so haven’t included the detailed pricing for the same.

Final Thoughts on Japan:

Japan has been exceptional in distinct ways. Just in 13 days, this country managed to give me the memories of a lifetime.

Japan will always have my heart. It is a country that taught me language is just a medium of communication. And people can still help each other without knowing the language. The amicable town of Kyoto made me fall in love with the culture, while Tokyo made me feel livelier than ever.

Things To Remember: 

We wanted to visit Robot Cafe, but couldn’t, because we didn’t know that the tickets had to be booked online at least 15 days in advance. So if you intend to visit Robot Cafe, book your tickets in advance. 

If you are planning to go in March or April, do carry a thick jacket and an umbrella with you. The weather gets unpredictable at times, and you don’t want to freeze in the cold. 

We visited Japan in April, which is also a month where people across the country get a one-week holiday, it’s known as their Golden week. Hence, we skipped crowded cafes and Disneyland. 

People in Japan are warm, helpful and kind. So when in doubt, always ask for help! 

Lastly, do not litter on the streets and trains; it’s highly looked down upon. Also, if possible, avoid taking calls on the train- it’s considered a bit rude.

After Living In India All My Life, I Moved To Japan. This is My Story

It's impossible not to thank your lucky stars when such a massive opportunity knocks on your door; the opportunity to start making your travel memories and kick-starting your backpacking experiences from a place that has been capturing the fascination of millions of travelers around the world - Japan!! I still remember the indescribable feeling of joy and excitement I felt when I was asked to move to Japan and work from there, thereby giving me my first taste of life as an expatriate. So undoubtedly there were a lot of firsts and a lot of lasts, each contributing to the travel philosophies that I have been harboring ever since. But after all these years of backpacking across multiple countries around the world, I do realize that Japan is an entirely different world as viewed through the eyes of a traveler, just rushing through the country in a few days, than a person who is living in the society deeply enriched by interesting customs and traditions. So how much does an Indian feel at home when living in Japan - here are few of my personal experiences to help you understand that.

1. It's more than just a bunch of islands

Travel guides fail to see beyond the common stereotypes about Japan being a group of beautiful islands with lots of historic sites. Undeniably these are some of the most prominent and popular aspects of this nation, but this common stereotype is precisely the reason why I believe Japan is entirely different when experienced as an expatriate than as a backpacker.

In winter there are also hundreds of ski areas you can enjoy. In fact, the ski village of Zao in Yamagata prefecture is one of the few regions in the world where you can see Snow Monsters - unique snow deposit patterns on high altitudes!!

There are thousands of points of interest other than Kyoto , Mt. Fuji or similar spots you can find on the guidebooks. I bet you’ll never forget what you can find in the Kushiro’s wetlands , which are rarely mentioned as one of the Hokkaido ’s view points. These are the kind of places you can easily get to know when you are living in Japan and talking to locals regularly.....did I say talking to the locals?

2. Language is the key - to everything

You might get lucky with sights like these when you get lost on a trail...or maybe not!! (c)Divas

Japanese language, though being as challenging as it is, is the key to survival in this island nation. During my initial days in Japan I have been lost on hiking trails, resorted to randomly selecting food from the Japanese menu in small street food shops and trusted Google translate to help me choose groceries from the local shops - all because I did not know how to read or speak in Japanese. As a backpacker I could easily navigate around these challenges, but doing it on a daily basis was definitely not practical.

Unless you want to restrict your social experiences and interactions to a handful of compatriots or native English speakers, I cannot stress on the need to learn Japanese enough before you come here. Even while travelling, having a basic knowledge of Japanese language and culture will dramatically influence your travel experiences here. Even simple things like choosing what to eat becomes challenging when there is no English-speaking help around, especially when you are a vegan or vegetarian - which brings me to my next point.

3. Look out for what you eat

While in Japan, I was around a lot of vegetarian and vegan Indian colleagues of mine, which made me aware and sensitive to the issues they faced. If you are under the impression that you have at least french-fries to give you company, then think again. It is really common to find almost all food items, unless you are 100% sure about it, cooked in fish oil or oil from other non-vegetarian sources. What may seem like a dish made up of only vegetables in first glance could probably contain non-vegetarian sauces or cooking oil. Therefore, your options are drastically reduced if you are a vegetarian living in Japan - unless you intend to cook all your meals by yourself. In contrast, I being a non vegetarian and sea food lover was in food haven for the time I was living there!!

But don't lose heart!! Shojin ryori , traditional Buddhist cuisine, is one of the most popular and delectable vegetarian cuisines you can easily find in Japan. Even the largest of restaurants review websites in Japan now has a category for Shojin Ryori. Japan also has a wide variety of excellent pasta on its menus, with a wide range of sauces. Japanese fruit and vegetables are often prepared in interesting ways to add an element of excitement - try a simple vegetable salad, for example. Also, good sushi shops can create a vegetarian menu for you if you ask beforehand.

No matter how may times you have seen or heard about the smiling, cheerful and ever-so-helpful Japanese locals on online travel guides or videos, a few days is all it takes to understand that things are a little different from what you experience at first glance. Given how seriously Japanese feel about their social obligations, their caring and cheerful nature is their honest effort to present their best behavior during a social exchange, which does win your heart over.

However, the more time I spent in Japan the more I realized that assimilation and social integration here is so much more difficult, in-fact almost non-existent, as compared to other countries around the world. More often than not I was yearning for casual conversations with a local over topics as simple as weather or food!! If you think you have made friends with a local, more often than not the reality is substantially different from those in other countries. Japanese locals are generally less honest and open than what you may expect from a typical friend, preferring to keep things to themselves more often than not. That's one of the reasons why most of the English-speaking expats usually search for Gaijin pubs - pubs for foreigners, unless you are happy living in isolation. (I know generalization serves no great purpose, but some observations were glaringly obvious for me during my stay.)

Insider Tip : Given the impetus Japan is now giving to "mandatory" learning of English language, you will come across a lot of young dynamic Japanese locals who would be more than happy to practice their spoken English on you - and it works best when you have alcohol and food to give you company!! Wait for the night to descend over a weekend in a pub, let the inhibition meter drop down a few notches and now you can engage in truly exciting, sometimes memorable, conversations with the locals.

5. It's really, really safe here!!

There were a lot of good things about living in Japan: safety, low crime rates, cleanliness and convenience to name a few. I have spent late nights on railway platforms and have seen female commuters wait patiently for the last subway on a deserted platform alone, without ever facing safety issues. Most Japanese are extremely honest as well - I once left my phone on a coffee table without realizing it and the person sitting next to me literally ran over to return to me when I left the store!! I still remember my first night in Japan when I got off the airport bus at the bus stop in the outskirts of Tokyo. Amidst the chaos of the city around me, I had lost my way around the streets even before I knew it. In that moment of panic I had approached two teenagers, with a small hope they might know about the hotel I had to reach. I will never ever forget that night - for they walked almost a mile leading the way, turning back every once in a while to make sure I was following them correctly and only left my side once I had checked into the hotel and taken the room key from the reception!!

It's very easy to let down your guard and ignore the impulses of common sense when living in such a safe and honest society, but that's a mistake many expats do and end up in isolated and rare unfortunate incidents. Growing up in India, we already have a very powerful social gauge built into us which you must keep handy when in tricky situations or circumstances where you have to trust the locals. The good thing is that you can keep the gauge on its minimum setting - worked wonders for me.

As you can very well imagine, having had the privilege of living and observing such an intriguing, colorful and culturally rich society from such close quarters is definitely one of the most cherished moments of my life. More than the landscapes and the thrill of living in a country which is on the bucket list of many, Japan played a really prominent role in kick starting my backpacking journey and transforming my ideas about travelling in general. Needless to say, you need not think twice about spending some time in this island country - it will transform the way you look at the world!!

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden has called Japan and India “xenophobic” countries that do not welcome immigrants, lumping the two with adversaries China and Russia as he tried to explain their economic circumstances and contrasted the four with the U.S. on immigration.

The remarks, at a campaign fundraising event Wednesday evening, came just three weeks after the White House hosted Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida for a lavish official visit, during which the two leaders celebrated what Biden called an “unbreakable alliance,” particularly on global security matters.

The White House welcomed Indian Prime Minister Narenda Modi for a state visit last summer.

Japan is a critical U.S. ally. And India, one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, is a vital partner in the Indo-Pacific despite differences on human rights.

AP Washington correspondent Sagar Meghani reports President Biden has lumped two key partners in with two adversaries.

At a hotel fundraiser where the donor audience was largely Asian American, Biden said the upcoming U.S. election was about “freedom, America and democracy” and that the nation’s economy was thriving “because of you and many others.”

“Why? Because we welcome immigrants,” Biden said. “Look, think about it. Why is China stalling so badly economically? Why is Japan having trouble? Why is Russia? Why is India? Because they’re xenophobic. They don’t want immigrants.”

The president added: “Immigrants are what makes us strong. Not a joke. That’s not hyperbole, because we have an influx of workers who want to be here and want to contribute.”

There was no immediate reaction from either the Japanese or Indian governments. White House national security spokesman John Kirby said Biden was making a broader point about the U.S. posture on immigration.

“Our allies and partners know well in tangible ways how President Biden values them, their friendship, their cooperation and the capabilities that they bring across the spectrum on a range of issues, not just security related,” Kirby said Thursday morning when asked about Biden’s “xenophobic” remarks. “They understand how much he completely and utterly values the idea of alliances and partnerships.”

Biden’s comments came at the start of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and he was introduced at the fundraiser by Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., one of two senators of Asian American descent. She is a national co-chair for his reelection campaign.

Japan has acknowledged issues with its shrinking population, and the number of babies born in the country in 2023 fell for the eighth straight year, according to data released in February. Kishida has called the low birth rate in Japan “the biggest crisis Japan faces” and the country has long been known for a more closed-door stance on immigration, although Kishida’s government has, in recent years, shifted its policies to make it easier for foreign workers to come to Japan.

Meanwhile, India’s population has swelled to become the world’s largest , with the United Nations saying it was on track to reach 1.425 billion. Its population also skews younger. Earlier this year, India enacted a new citizenship law that fast-tracks naturalization for Hindus, Parsis, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and Christians who fled to India from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan. But it excludes Muslims, who are a majority in all three nations. It’s the first time that India has set religious criteria for citizenship.
