4 Things to Do in Ouray, Colorado

A mountain jewel between black canyon of the gunnison and mesa verde national parks.

Surrounded by 13,000-foot peaks in the San Juan mountain range, Ouray, Colorado, is known as the “Switzerland of America.” This Victorian-era mining town is as authentic as it gets, so you’ll only find locally-owned restaurants and boutiques. Here are our favorite things to do in Ouray.

Discover Backroads

With more than 75 miles of rugged, dirt roads and trails, Ouray offers excellent off-road experiences. Rent a Jeep in town, sign up for a Jeep tour or drive yourself in your SUV to explore easy trails like Brooklyn Road or more challenging ones like the difficult Imogene Pass.

Perimeter Trail

Hiker on the Perimeter Trail near Ouray, Colorado

Do a spectacular six-mile hiking loop above town. Park at the Ouray Visitors Center to start the hike. After your hike, finish the day at KJ Wood Distillers with a drink made with vodka distilled from Ute Indian blue corn in honor of the area’s early Ute inhabitants.

Ouray Hot Springs Pool

Nestled in a tight valley, this large sulfur-free mineral pool on Main Street has three slides and is open year round. The pool underwent a renovation that began in late 2016. Massages are offered.

Ouray Ice Park

This world-famous park boasts the best ice climbing in Colorado with more than 200 ice and mixed climbs. Added bonus: the park is within walking distance from downtown. Watch climbers at the Ouray Ice Festival every January.

Best time to visit switzerland.

May, June, September, and October are wonderful months for seeing Switzerland, as the weather is typically mild, the mountain passes are still open and the country is less crowded than in the peak holiday months of July and August.

It tends to rain more in the months of March, April, October, and November, and with snowfall usually present from December, this is the perfect time for skiers and snowboarders.

Geography and environment

Landlocked Switzerland shares borders with   Austria , Lichtenstein,   Italy ,   France , and   Germany .

A highly mountainous country, Switzerland's best-known ranges are the Alps in the south, with the mighty Matterhorn and iconic Eiger being the most well-known peaks.

Home to an abundance of rolling hills, lakes, glaciers, rivers, meadows, and fields, Switzerland's landscapes are incredibly picturesque, particularly in spring and summer when the wildflowers are in bloom.

Top 5 culinary classics of Switzerland

While not enjoying the same worldwide popularity that it did in the 1960s and 70s, this Swiss classic is still alive and well in Switzerland. Although not to everyone's taste, travelers should experience sitting around a communal pot of rich, melted cheese at least once.

Who knew that a plate of grated, fried potato could taste so good? Considered to be Switzerland's national dish, Rosti was once relegated to the breakfast plate but is now served as an accompaniment to dinners too.

3. Bircher Muesli

This Swiss-German classic has taken off worldwide as a breakfast food, although it was originally created for hospital patients by a Swiss physician. Commonly eaten in the evening in southern Switzerland, it's a nutritious mix of oats, fruits, and seeds.

This brioche-like, plaited bread is a traditional Sunday morning treat in Switzerland. Dating back to the 15th century, this delicious bread can be found in bakeries all over Switzerland, especially on Sundays.

Making hundreds of varieties of cheese, Switzerland is one of the best places in the world to indulge in a dose of calcium. Whether it's a chunk of hard Gruyere, a slice of Emmental, or a bit of fruity Appenzeller, Switzerland has enough cheese shops to satisfy everyone.

This Pennsylvania Town Is Known As the 'Switzerland of America' — Here's Why

The perfect alpine escape is closer than you think.

Lindsay Cohn is a writer, editor, and avid traveler who has visited 45 countries across six continents — and counting. She contributes to Travel + Leisure, Hotels Above Par, InsideHook, Well+Good, The Zoe Report, and more.

switzerland tours of america

You’d probably expect the “Switzerland of America” to be some slopeside resort village in the Colorado Rockies. But the picturesque town bestowed with this enticing moniker actually sits in the northeastern part of Pennsylvania.

Nestled in the foothills of the Pocono Mountains, Jim Thorpe initially lures tourists with the promise of outdoor adventure and scenic beauty. The area used to be a coal mining hub, so there’s also a lot of interesting history here. Downtown shows off enchanting architecture, heritage-rich attractions, and a creative spirit. The cozy inns and alpine splendor give Jim Thorpe an edge in terms of romance, but it’s an equally appealing destination for family vacations, group getaways, and solo travel.

Here's how to plan a picture-perfect trip to Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania.

Alex Potemkin/Getty Images

Get outside.

Jim Thorpe presents countless opportunities for outdoor recreation. Kemmerer Park is an idyllic green space with a leafy walking path, playground, and tennis courts near the Asa Packer Mansion in the center of everything.

To access the beautiful 6,000-acre Lehigh Gorge State Park from downtown, visitors only need to cross the Mansion House Pedestrian Bridge. It’s possible to do this on foot or via bike. The Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor , more commonly referred to as the D&L Trail, also winds its way through town.

The Lehigh River, meanwhile, supplies the ideal setting to try whitewater rafting. Kayaking, fishing, and swimming are popular activities on Mauch Chunk Lake.

Interested in alpine pursuits? Drive just 30 minutes to Blue Mountain Resort for excellent skiing.

davelogan/Getty Images

Learn about the rich history.

The former mining town we now know as Jim Thorpe was originally founded as Mauch Chunk. The name was later changed to honor Native American sports phenom and Olympic medal winner James Francis Thorpe (though, by all accounts, he’d never even visited). The Jim Thorpe Memorial is the final resting place of the man heralded as “the greatest athlete of the first half of the 20th century” by the Associated Press. The Mauch Chunk Museum & Cultural Center exhibits an impressive collection of historical items and offers guided tours. It's also worth checking out the Asa Packer Mansion , which belonged to the well-known railroad magnate and founder of Lehigh University.

Explore the darling downtown.

The atmospheric downtown brims with shops, restaurants, and pubs. It’s also the best spot to experience the vibrant arts and music scene. There are many galleries that display the work of local artists and performance venues to catch a show. Music lovers should consider nabbing tickets for a live performance at the fabled Mauch Chunk Opera House .

Stay at a quaint inn.

Situated right across the street from the famous opera house, The Dolon House is a charming bed-and-breakfast that’s decorated with art and antiques. Past guests describe the experience as akin to staying at a museum that also happens to have thoughtful service and delicious homemade breakfast. Built in 1849 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The Inn at Jim Thorpe stands as an enduring example of a grand Victorian hotel. From the main building's facade with its cast-iron balconies to the suites with mahogany furnishings and fireplaces, it exudes an old-world charisma that couples in particular really like.

Ride the rails (or sidecar).

Hop aboard the diesel-powered Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway for some family fun. Passengers can kick back on vintage coaches and enjoy a narrated locomotive journey past stunning natural scenery. Another nostalgic way to see the many sights is on a historic trolley tour of town.

Looking for a totally unique experience that’s not available anywhere else in the Pocono Mountains? Ride around on a vintage sidecar rig. (Don’t worry, you won’t be expected to actually operate the motorcycle.)

Photography Excursions

Photography excursions out of Ouray, Colorado provide the opportunity to capture the incredible San Juan Mountains of SW Colorado. From the highly professional to talented amateurs, to Instagram enthusiasts…everyone taking a photo can capture the perfect image. Summer brings shimmering waterfalls and colorful wildflowers. In the fall, mountainsides glow with a variety of brilliant orange, gold, crimson, laced with late summer green. In every season, keep your camera ready for an opportunity to capture wildlife… including deer, elk, the comical “Whistle Pig”, big horn sheep, moose, black bear and occasionally… the elusive mountain goat. Zoom in for a special shot of distant tram towers, miner’s cabins, or other relics from the turn-of-the-century mining era still dotting the mountainsides. Equally photo worthy, are the thriving vintage mining towns of Ouray, Silverton, and Lake City featuring vintage ‘Queen-Anne’ Victorian Era architecture prominent during the late 1880’s.

We are proud to have guided many photography workshops up into the San Juan Mountains and look forward to making your photo excursion unique and meaningful. Switzerland of America, Inc. can create  an unforgettable SW Colorado Rocky Mountain photography excursion just for you!

Our featured Photo Workshops for 2019 are organized by industry professionals and are open to our guests with advance registration.

Welcome to Switzerland

Alpine adventures abound in one of the world's favorite year-round playgrounds. There is nothing better than climbing through the Alps by cogwheel train to the Jungfraujoch or the Matterhorn at "the top of Europe" as the view takes your breath away. Savor cultural delights from velvety chocolate to the gastronomic celebration of gooey cheese ready for dipping... enjoy the urban edge and charming architectural styles of Bern, and other treasured cities with unexpected nods to unique, modern aesthetics.

Visit one of the world's top-ranked cities in which to live... zurich, switzerland.

Switzerland's largest city, Zurich today is a global leader and a world capital of banking (not to mention of chocolate), and consistently ranks high among the world's cities in quality of life. But this modern metropolis on Lake Zurich has a long, rich history that stretches back some 2,000 years, and you'll enjoy experiencing some of it with Tauck – including Bahnhofstrasse, the exclusive shopping boulevard connecting Lake Zurich with the main railway station… Old Town, with its Niederdorf pedestrian area, whose winding streets are lined with shops, artisan studios, and restaurants… and a plethora of interesting architecture, fountains, squares, and churches like the Romanesque Grossmünster.

Join the "beautiful people" at the chic Alpine resort town of St. Moritz

Lovely vistas of sparkling lakes and majestic peaks greet you in the high alpine resort town St. Moritz in Switzerland's Engadine Valley. Set on the southern slopes of the Albula Alps, the town has been a popular winter sports destination for well over a century. St. Moritz has played host to the Winter Olympic Games twice – in 1928 and 1948 – and the world championships of alpine skiing in 1934, 1974, 2003 and 2017. Besides skiing, other winter sports including snowboarding, tobagganing and bobsledding are popular in St. Moritz, home to the world's last remaining natural bobsled run (built up with only snow and water, without artificial means), which opened in 1904. The resort, which enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine every year, ranks among the most famous – and glamorous – ski resort areas in the world, where celebrity spotting is almost as popular as the skiing.

Tauck Exclusive – Reception at the Jungfraujoch Ice Palace

Enjoy cocktails and more at the "top of europe" with an exclusive private reception at the jungfraujoch's ice palace.

As your mountain railway train ascends into the majestic Swiss Alps, you'll arrive at Kleine Scheidegg at the foot of the Eiger, then board a cogwheel train for the scenic climb to Europe's highest railway station, at the Jungfraujoch (perched at 11,333 feet above sea level). Here, at "the top of Europe," you'll find a restaurant, observatory, research station, a gallery of ice sculpture, and breathtaking views of the glacier-clad Bernese Alps, often called Switzerland's "jewel in the crown." And you'll enjoy a Tauck Exclusive... a private cocktail reception at the Ice Palace… taking time. of course, to savor the astounding views of the lofty peaks of the Eiger, Jungfrau and Mönch surrounding you!

Bellevue Palace Bern

More than a century of history in the shadow of the alps.

The only grand hotel in the heart of Switzerland's capital, Bellevue Palace Bern a national institution – the official guest house of the Swiss government for over 150 years, in fact. Whether you arrive for a romantic weekend, an eventful holiday or an official visit, the hotel's stylish and discreetly luxurious rooms and suites leave nothing to be desired. All offer classically elegant furnishings combined with modern-day comforts, harmonious colors and stunning views. Thanks to our hospitality, you are sure to feel at home.

Rhine Falls, Schaffhausen

Experience the largest waterfall in europe – the rhine falls, near schaffhausen in northern switzerland.

Located near the town of Schaffhausen on the Rhine River in northern Switzerland, the Rhine Falls (Rheinfall) is the largest plain waterfall in Europe, Set on the "High Rhine," the falls are 150 meters (490 feet) wide and 23 meters (75 feet) high. They were formed during the last ice age – approximately 14,000 to 17,000 years ago – by erosion-resistant rocks narrowing the riverbed. Travelers, artists and authors have been awed by the Rhine Falls for centuries; in the 19th century, J. M. W. Turner created several paintings of the falls, while "Frankenstein" author Mary Shelley wrote glowingly of it in her "Rambles" in the 1840s. With Tauck, you'll experience the Rhine Falls on a boat excursion from nearby Schaffhausen – with time to explore this historic town with its fine Renaissance-era buildings decorated with exterior frescoes and sculpture, and its circular 16th-century hilltop fortress, the Munot, in the center of town.

Majestic snow capped peaks, expansive alpine meadows, tumbling waterfalls, & charming victorian towns..

Telluride, Colorado

REQUEST MORE INFO     |     TRIP ITINERARY & MAP     |     FAQs

Trip  Highlights :

Hike remote trails with beautiful aspen groves to high alpine passes with endless views., breathe the rarified rocky mountain air as you hike remote trails beneath 14,000-foot peaks in the colorado high country., indulge in pleasures from the old west , from victorian hotels and saloons to ghost towns left over from the gold mining days..

Majestic snow capped peaks, expansive alpine meadows, tumbling waterfalls, and charming Victorian hotels beckon hikers to explore the San Juan Mountains of Southwestern Colorado; home of Ryder- Walker Alpine Adventures. From bubbling hot springs and historic hotels, to the outposts of bank robbers and miners gone “mad”, Colorado mountains over a mother lode of scenic hikes and colorful towns.

Ryder-Walker’s hiking adventure offers an exciting exploration of the region’s most spectacular trails. From remote valleys filled with beautiful Aspen groves to high alpine passes replete with endless views, we hike beneath the shadows of the resident fourteen thousand-foot peaks as we thread our way through the San Juan mountains. Hiking days are as challenging as you wish, and the scenery is breathtaking. At the end of the day a comfortable bed, hot shower, good meal, glass of local wine or beer, and the company of other mountain enthusiasts awaits. Photographers from around the world descend upon the San Juan ranges to capture the spectacular hues, whether as a backdrop to budding alpine flowers in spring or in autumn when the aspens leaves change to gold.

Our tour begins in the charming mining town of Ouray. Of course, the miners have traded in their pickaxes for trekking poles, but the town has a time forgotten ambiance. Superb hiking and restaurants make for an unforgettable mix. Ouray boasts great hiking variety as well as the most colorful and varied geology in the Rockies. From Ouray, hike into world renowned Telluride. The trails between the towns remain largely untraveled, and you won’t have to share the trails or the views with many other parties. The route lies along quiet mountain paths, with some optional rough and remote sections, and spectacular views of the surrounding peaks as trails climb to high passes. We follow abandoned Native American and mining routes, and traverse along streams beneath the shade of aspen, spruce, and fir trees.

Along the way, we have selected the most comfortable and atmospheric hotels in both towns. Accommodations range from our turn of the century hotel in Ouray, that reportedly hosted presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Herbert Hoover, to exquisite modern mountain accommodations in Telluride. Each hotel reflects the charm and character of its location and the simplicity of days past.

Day 1 - Arrive in Ouray

Drive to Ouray. Settle into a superior, historic four- star hotel located in the center of this beautiful and colorful town.

Day 2 - Ouray Perimeter Trail

Hike the newly assembled Ouray Perimeter Trail. We say assembled as the trail connects many preexisting sections of trail and rights of way to create a 360-degree circuit around and high above this charming town. Walk through a living museum of mining, geology and cowboy history as well as visiting many of the waterfalls the town is famed for. Spend the night in Ouray.

Distance: 6.5 miles. Elevation gain/loss: 1600 ft.

Day 3 - Blue Lakes

Depart Ouray towards Telluride driving through the charming town of Ridgeway. Along the way is the turn to the Blue Lakes trailhead. Enjoy the scenic 9 mile drive from the highway to the trailhead with spectacular views of Mt. Sneffels. Wander through Engelmann spruce forests on the way to the lower lake all the while the trail climbs up the valley between Mt. Sneffels 14,150 feet and Wolcott Mountain 13,041 feet.

Distance: 8.6 miles. Elevation gain/loss: 2370 ft.

Day 4 - Hope Lake High Alpine Basin

Alpine Lake Day! You will drive to the remote vacation community of Trout Lake. The Hidden Lake road accesses the Hope Lake trailhead. Start with a fantastic traverse offering breathtaking views of Sheep Mountain and San Miguel Peak. Reach the head of the valley and enjoy well-manufactured switchbacks up to the gorgeous Hope Lake. For a little extra credit ascend to the South Mineral Creek Pass for views down toward Silverton.

Distance: 8 miles. Elevation gain/loss: 1500 ft.

Distance: 7 miles. Elevation gain/loss: 1600/3800 ft.

Day 6 - Lizard Head / Cross Mountain Trail

This is a spectacular, high elevation loop with expansive views over the Lizard Head Wilderness, and the Wilson range. The views are among the best in the area. The trail crosses through sub-alpine forest of aspen and conifers and meadows with mountain wildflowers, and climbs into a high alpine environment with dwarfed, tundra-like vegetation. One highlight of the hike is gaining the top of Black Face, the long, low ridge that you can see from the trailhead, and traversing right under the imposing tower of Lizard Head, which at just over 13,000 ft. is one of Colorado’s most technical peaks.

Distance: Up to 10 miles. Elevation gain/loss: up to 2800 ft.

There is an option to shorten the hike today by takingan alternate trail that branches off along the waytaking you to a beautiful picnic spot called WilsonMeadow.

10 of the best last-minute spring ski holidays

T he ski clock may be ticking, but there’s still plenty of opportunity to get to the mountains before the resorts close. And, whether you’re yet to book or you’re planning yet another flit to the snow, the truth is that late season can be the best time to go .

Demand, along with prices, takes a dip in March , offering a magical moment of opportunity between the peak-priced half-term and the Easter school holidays. And although Easter falls early in 2024 (March 31), there’s enough time to take advantage of the quieter airports, shorter lift queues and mountain restaurants with tables to spare.

But even if you’re locked into school holidays, there are also reasons to be cheerful. As spring approaches, the days are getting longer, the lifts open later, and warmer temperatures make days on the mountains more enjoyable, particularly for young children and beginners who are more susceptible to cold.

And what about the snow? Well, things are looking rosy in that direction too. After some fallow weeks at the start of 2024 and into February, there has been recent heavy snowfall across the Alps , with Italian resorts reporting the heaviest falls of the year so far and even lower-lying resorts in France experiencing a substantial top-up.

Ian McIlrath of Ski Solutions, says: “The conditions in Austria are exceptional at this point in the season. In particular, the Arlberg region covering St Anton.” Further north, Scandinavian resorts continue to offer some of the best conditions in Europe. Andy Hemingway of Ski Safari comments: “ Norway is in the midst of an unbelievable winter, the powder days have been plentiful and, with fewer people on the slopes than other destinations, the snow stays untracked for longer.” And while winter got off to a slower start in some North American resorts, snow is now falling with moderate to heavy snow predicted over the next week.

So, when should you book and where should you go? The key strategy is to aim high so, if you do hit a warm spell, you still stand a good chance of decent skiing. Here are 10 last-minute deals to snow-sure resorts to help you make the most of the last few weeks of the ski season.

Tignes, France

With lifts operating to above 3,400m, Tignes has a season that runs into May, followed by summer snow sports on its Grande Motte glacier.

Book it: Peak Retreats (023 9283 9310; peakretreats.co.uk ) offers stays in Le Lodge des Neiges residence, near the Boisses telecabine in Tignes 1800, with indoor pool and hot tubs, from £549, self-catering, based on five sharing a two-bedroom apartment, including Le Shuttle crossing with a free upgrade to FlexiPlus. Departs March 16.

Mayrhofen, Austria

At a relatively low 630m, Mayrhofen can be bathed in warm spring sunshine but still with plenty of opportunity for late-season skiing and snowboarding as slopes rise to a snow-sure height of 2,500m.

Book it: Crystal Ski (020 3451 2821; crystalski.co.uk ) offers stays at Eberharter Apartments, near the resort centre and close to the ski bus stop, from £1,233, self-catering, with the option to upgrade to half board. Departs March 23.

Myrkdalen, Norway

One of the country’s snowiest resorts, open until April 30, Myrkdalen offers slopes that are best suited to beginners and improving intermediates, with off-piste skiing for more confident experts.

Book it: Ski Safari (01273 224060; skisafari.com ) offers the four-star Myrkdalen Hotel, a ski-in/ski-out hotel near the ski school and slopes, from £990, half board, based on two adults and two children under 12 years sharing a family room. Departs April 7.

Cervinia, Italy

Glacier skiing, a top station at 3,480m and a resort at 2,000m mean snow can cover the roofs of the upmarket hotels and apartments until early May – Cervinia has it all at the end of the season.

Book it: Elegant Resorts (01244 897581; elegantresorts.co.uk ) offers stays at the five-star Saint Hubertus Resort, with spa, pool and gourmet restaurant, from £2,530 based on a prestige room. Departs March 16.

Val Thorens, France

Not only the highest resort in the huge, 600km Trois Vallées area, but also in Europe, Val Thorens (at 2,300m) has lifts that continue to operate into early May.

Book it: Erna Low (020 3011 1222; ernalow.co.uk ) offers stays at four-star Le Hameau du Kashmir, a ski-in/ski-out residence with two restaurants and pool, from £564, self-catering, based on four sharing a two-bedroom apartment, including return Flexiplus LeShuttle crossing. Departs April 13.

Whistler, Canada

After a slow start, snow is falling on the linked mountains of Whistler and Blackcomb in western Canada’s Coast Mountain range, a vast ski area of more than 8,000 acres with slopes for all abilities.

Book it: Frontier Ski (020 8776 8709; frontier-ski.co.uk ) offers the Summit Boutique Hotel Whistler, in Whistler Village with pool and hot tubs, from £1,545, room only, based on deluxe studio with kitchenette. Departs April 8.

Avoriaz, France

Avoriaz is the highest of the dozen resorts that make up the Portes du Soleil area, and, at 1,800m and with slopes rising to 2,225m, its purpose-built, car-free centre is strong on ski-in/ski-out accommodation.

Book it: Sunweb (020 3170 8206; sunweb.co.uk ) offers stays at Résidence L’Hermine, 100m from the slopes, from £818, self-catering, based on two adults and two children sharing a one-bedroom apartment with kitchenette, including lift passes. Departs March 30.

St Anton, Austria

Situated in Austria’s Arlberg ski region, St Anton is one of Europe’s snowiest resorts, with fast links to neighbouring Lech and is particularly popular with experts.

Book it: Ski Solutions (020 7471 7700; skisolutions.com ) offers the four-star Hotel Banyan, with modern interiors, pool and sauna, from £1,895. Departs March 16.

Breckenridge, USA

With a top lift rising to a giddying 3,915m – the highest in North America – and a resort height of 3,000m, this Colorado resort, extending over five peaks, has an upper snow base of 140cm, which bodes well for late-season skiing.

Book it: Ski Independence (0131 243 8097; ski-i.com ) offers stays at the Residence Inn by Marriott, near the Quicksilver chairlift, from £2,348 per room only based on studio accommodation. Departs March 21.

Zermatt, Switzerland

It is possible to ski all year round on the highest slopes of Zermatt’s Matterhorn glacier at 3,883m, but the main season for this atmospheric resort usually runs into late April.

Book it: Inghams (01483 938047; inghams.co.uk ) offers Aparthotel Naco, from £1,419 based on three sharing a studio with kitchenette, balcony and use of an indoor pool, including train travel from St Pancras. Departs March 23.

Unless otherwise stated, prices are per person, based on two sharing, including breakfast, flights from London and transfers and are subject to availability
