Michael English isn’t most people.

In a culture that would rather turn a blind eye instead of pursuing something more…something different…Michael stands among the few who intentionally and passionately pursue change from the inside out.

Not behavior modification…not a step-by-step program to self-improvement…but an active, daily encounter with our endlessly creative Savior.

Encounters that don’t let you settle…

Encounters that bring you face to face with the One who knows the innermost workings of the heart He created inside and gently, firmly, molds, shapes, leads and guides that very heart until it is more and more like His.

This is where Michael English is living.

Not among the many; but among the few who dare for more…the ‘some’ who dare to change.

And so, six years out from his last full-length project, it’s fitting that his magnificent return to the studio as a solo artist embraces, explores and celebrates that, yes, indeed, Some People Change.

As with every creative venture Michael has pursued, including his current stint as lead vocalist for the Gaither Vocal Band, the record only confirms what the audience and the industry have known since he first broke into the music scene in the late 80s, his voice, delivery, artistry are second to none.

Produced by long-time friend and music legend in the making in his own right, Jay DeMarcus, of Rascal Flatts the album hits all the right notes. And from beginning to end, the relentless mercy, grace and redemption of God takes center stage in a non-assuming way, approachable way that let’s the music speak for itself, while showcasing one of the most powerful voices the industry has ever known reminding us all why Michael English is decidedly, as Jay describes it, among the elite singers of the world.

“I get inspired by great singers,” says Jay. “When you get in the room with world class singers like Michael, it’s a privilege and blessing.”

“No one knows my voice better than Jay,” Michael affirms.

The two had previously worked together on Gospel (1998), which was largely Southern Gospel in style and sound. For this record, a hint of Michael’s native North Carolina comes to the fore, emanating a soulful jaunt to his roots and back—a decision that was reached through very careful and intentional prayer and focus.

“I was a little afraid about going in those directions, but that’s where I trusted Jay,” Michael says.

“You can’t make Michael or his voice anything it’s not,” Jay says. “I love letting his voice get a hold of big songs.”

And from beginning to end, the big songs, the big voice and the honest heart of a life lived in the trenches and the mountain tops weave together a brilliant mirage of the kind of music that makes you step back and look at life with newer, kinder eyes.

“When people listen to it, they’re really happy about it,” says Michael.

With good reason…

The eclectic mix of old songs and new, guest artists and good ol’ fashioned vocal chops intersect beautifully-yet another testament of a great artist—one with whom other great artists want to collaborate. On this particular record, powerhouse Crystal Lewis makes an appearance on the duet “Knew You Were Waiting,” originally sung by Aretha Franklin and George Michael, and later re-cut by Michael McDonald.

“Singing with her has always been a dream of mine,” says Michael.

Other songs on the record include “Stubborn” formerly recorded by Lee Ann Womack, a remake of his arguably most popular song, “In Christ Alone,” and the title track, originally cut by Montgomery Gentry. Through powerful stories and imagery, the song tells a tale of everyone who has faced adversity, been beaten up a bit by life, yet come through even stronger for it.

“Choosing this as the title cut just fit for the album,” shares Michael. “The lyrics are amazing. It’s how I grew up.”

Like everyone else, Michael has traversed his fair share of valleys. While at a precipice of his musical success, life showed up in ways that forced Michael to step back, regroup and rediscover what it means to be truly dependent on Christ. Transparent about his own mistakes and struggles along the way, Michael can now authentically meet them at the intersection of grace and shame…as a living testimony of God’s promises to work all things for good.

Today, Michael is singing with a wisdom that only life, trial and honesty can lend. It’s that same honesty and vulnerability that has allowed Michael to identify with, pray for and connect with people around the world who are struggling, who are flailing, who are…people.

“I hear people leaving concerts saying that they were ministered to and touched by my story,” shares Michael. “They are telling me that they now have feelings of hope.”

Hope is perhaps nowhere more poignantly delivered than through the new, compelling recording of “In Christ Alone.”

“When that song went number one in 1990, I was being treated for depression,” he shares.

In a new place spiritually and emotionally, Michael’s latest interpretation brings the song to life in a new way…which also comes across sonically—a gamble for such a well-loved classic.

Understandably a bit wary about reworking such a career song, Michael did his due diligence to run it by one of his most esteemed fans…quarterback Frank Reich.

On January 3, 1993, Reich replaced starting quarterback Jim Kelly, to lead the Buffalo Bills from a 31–0 deficit to a 42–40 victory over the Houston Oilers. It remains the largest comeback in NFL history to this day. In a press conference following the game, Reich shared that his inspiration came from listening to “In Christ Alone” immediately prior to taking the field.

Michael, a Buffalo Bills fan had not seen the end of the game or even knew that his team had pulled it out until he started getting phone calls from others who heard Frank crediting the song and Michael in a post-game press conference.

“I wanted to make sure Frank was ok with the new version,” shares Michael.

Frank set his mind at ease and echoed the sentiment of all who have been privy to the epic remake with his simple and spot-on reaction: “It’s a masterpiece.”

Indeed, the entire album is reflective of a master artisan.

“Great vocalists in any genre come and go,” says CCM Magazine editor, Caroline Lusk. “But every once in a while, a voice comes along that rises above the great into a level all its own. Michael will always be one of those voices. This album captures that in a way that’s inspiring, refreshing and hopeful.”

With truths that are undeniable, a heart willingly transparent for the glory of God’s work and refined musicality that can only come after years in the studio of life, Michael English is once more affirming the source of his ultimate strength, the one who is endlessly creative and relentlessly in pursuit of the hearts of his children in the sweet spot of anointed collaboration and undeniable talent.

And in this culture steeped in complacency, judgment and un-reconciled shame, Michael once again proves that he is not satisfied with the norm.

As enigmatic and soul-stirring as ever, Michael is proof positive that yes, for better or worse, some people do change; but the gifting from the one who sings His own melody of salvation, when committed into the hands of the Giver only get better and better as the years go by.

Country music artist ‘extensively curtailing’ live shows until April 2023

One of the biggest names on the country music scene, Michael English, has announced that he will “extensively curtail” live shows from September 2022 to April 2023.

The 43-year-old Kildare native says continuing Covid-19 case numbers, which he claims, have been impacting attendance at country shows, is a “factor” in his decision.

He confirmed that he will fulfil some shows but will primarily focus on songwriting and releasing new albums during this period.

In a statement on Tuesday, June 28 th , 2022, a spokesperson for Michael English Music said:

“Michael has taken the decision to extensively curtail his live shows from September 2022 to April 2023. The continuing Covid-19 numbers, which have been affecting attendance at country shows, has been a factor in his decision.”

“During this time, Michael will focus on song-writing and releasing two new albums, including a gospel album, which has been a long-time ambition of his.”

“Michael will still fulfil some shows like the Cork Opera House & the Scottish tour in October, for which some shows are carried over from 2020.”

“He is already planning events for 2023 including Spain, Portgual and Gertrude Byrne’s cruise of Alaska.”

“We apologise for the inconvenience of any cancelled shows. However, Michael will continue to release new music and be present on social media,” the spokesperson concluded.

Reacting to the news on social media, one user said: “It is not viable for artists to perform with a reduced audience. Attendance has not returned to pre-Covid numbers plus putting the team on the road with the current cost of fuel.”

Another wrote: “Stay safe Michael and your band and crew. Hopefully, we will be back to packed venues at some stage. Looking forward to hearing your new music. What a gifted talented artist you are. Take care of yourself.”

Another commented: “It is going to be tough for bands in the future. It is an older crowd that attend country music venues, ticket prices have risen, and the cost of travelling and hotels are so expensive.”

Another said: “Disappointed but wise decision in light of the current situation. The health and safety of you and the band are paramount.”

“You will be sadly missed. Looking forward to hearing all your new music and to the new albums. Wishing you all the best for the future.”

Scottish Gemological Association Hosts a trip to Moscow

Dr. Michael Weisenburg has been promoted to Director of the Irvin Department of Rare Books and Special Collections at University of South Carolina Libraries.

Weisenburg joined the Irvin Department in 2013 as a summer employee working on the digitization of the Osman Collection of Braun Hogenberg maps. He has served in progressively responsible positions since then, becoming the department’s temporary instruction librarian in 2015, then its Reference and Instruction Librarian and, in 2019, its Associate Director. Originally from Buffalo, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Stony Brook University in 2006 before receiving his Master of Arts in English Literature from The College at Brockport: SUNY in 2009. He received his Ph.D. in Literature from the University of South Carolina in 2017.

His broad-based research interests and extensive teaching experience make Weisenburg an ideal fit for the role, says Associate Dean for Special Collections Elizabeth Sudduth: “While many people remember Michael as a Ph.D. student, working as Dr. Joel Myerson’s research assistant, taking courses, and teaching in USC’s Department of English Language and Literature, few people realize the breadth of his background and interest in the sciences and natural history.  He is a polymath, and his background makes him the perfect steward for our collections.  In addition, he is an exceptionally talented teacher and relates well to undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and members of the community.” 

Not only does Weisenburg place great importance on community engagement, but he is also a strong advocate for students being hands-on in the archive. “It is more fulfilling for me and engaging for the students to get to use these materials firsthand,” he says. One of his main objectives as Director is to further develop the department's robust interactions with students. “Finding ways for students to connect their interests with the collections is a great way to present these research methods to them, while also keeping them engaged,” he says.

If a student isn’t so much interested in eighteenth century manuscripts as they are the first appearance of Luke Cage in Marvel Comics, or the famous etchings of Piranesi, they can find a relevant item in the Irvin Department, and a treasure trove of relevant information in Weisenburg. You don’t need to be a student or faculty member to experience the depth and breadth of what the Irvin Department has to offer, according to Weisenburg. “You don’t need a guided tour to experience Rare Books,” Weisenburg says. It’s easy to spend time wandering through the rotating exhibits in the Ernest F. Hollings Special Collections Library, where the Irvin Department calls home.

Above all, Weisenburg is mindful of the Irvin Department’s capacity to give the people of South Carolina a chance to see rare historic materials they never would have before. “When will they ever be able to hold a medieval manuscript, or the first appearance of Spider-Man again,” he says. “When people hear ‘rare books,’ they think of old tomes, or manuscripts. But we are that and so much more.”
