South Korea Tourist Visa: Requirements and Application Process

A South Korea tourist visa is required for all nationalities that are not visa-exempt. The official code for the ordinary tourist visa is C-3-9. You can start the visa application online but you must visit a South Korean embassy in person to submit the documents.

Tourist visa validity

The single-entry tourist visa is valid for 3 months from the date of issue.

The double-entry tourist visa is valid for 6 months.

The multiple-entry tourist visa can be valid for up to 5 years but has additional requirements including prior travel history to South Korea and as such isn’t an option for first-time travelers.

Duration of stay

Single-entry visas allow up to 90 days but double-entry visas only up to 30 days at a time.

Allowed number of entries

There are three types of South Korean tourist visas – single-entry, double-entry and multiple-entry.

Allowed ports of entry

You can enter South Korea from any international airport or seaport with a tourist visa.

When to apply

The processing time varies greatly between South Korean embassies. In general, allow at least a few weeks for the issuance of a tourist visa after your first visit to the embassy. 

• Earliest: 3 months before traveling
• Latest: 3 weeks before traveling

Tourist visa extension

Extensions to the tourist visa are possible but not easily granted. You must apply in person at the Seoul Immigration office. Extensions are approved only on a case-by-case basis.

South Korea Tourist Visa Requirements

Who requires a tourist visa

All non-visa-exempt nationalities require a tourist visa for South Korea.

If you are visa-exempt, you do not require a tourist visa instead you require a K-ETA to travel to South Korea.

Documents required

The following documents are required for the tourist visa.

• Passport valid for more than 6 months
• Completed Visa Application Form (Form #17)
• Two passport-size photos (1 digital photo for online form)
• Bank statement for the last 3-6 months

Depending on the nationality and the embassy where you apply, you may be required to submit additional documents such as the below.

• Proof of employment (employment letter, salary slips, etc.)
• Income tax returns (1-3 year ITR depending on whether employed or self-employed)
• Proof of long-term residence (if applying from a country other than the country of citizenship)
• Proof of property ownership
• Family book or marriage certificate

Photo requirements

The photo for the tourist visa must meet the following requirements. 

• Must be of size 35×45 mm, with the face taking 25×35 mm
• Must be against a plain, evenly lit and light background, without any marks or creases
• Must have taken within the last 6 months
• Mist be looking directly at the camera
• No sunglasses or hats, except for medical/disability reasons
• Facial features are not covered from the bottom of chin to the top of forehead
• Full face is visible without any shadows
• Full face, eyebrows, eyes, nose, or mouth must not be covered, but covered ears are permitted.

The visa fee varies significantly depending on the type of visa, the location where you apply and your nationality.

In most general cases, the single-entry visa fee is 40 USD, double-entry is 70 USD and multiple-entry is 90 USD. The fee is payable in local currency in cash.

In some countries, South Korea has outsourced visa processing to Visa Application Centers such as VFS Global. Visa Application Centers charge their own service fee for handling the visa applications.

The fee is higher, lower, or exempted for certain nationalities. You can find the complete list on the Korea Visa Portal . 

Processing time

Applications are reviewed by a particular embassy so processing time is not universal. Some embassies process tourist visas in 4 days, others in 7 days, some in 14 days or more.

The official guidance is to apply at least 3 weeks in advance of traveling to allow sufficient time for the issuance of your tourist visa.

In countries where the application process is outsourced to Visa Application Centers, express processing is available for an additional fee.

How to apply for South Korea tourist visa

South Korea’s tourist visa application process is partially online. You will have to fill out an online form but you will have to visit the embassy in person after to submit your documents. 

Below is the general process of applying for a South Korean tourist visa at the embassy. 

• Step 1: Complete the e-form online

Step 2: Visit the diplomatic office

Step 3: wait for visa processing, step 4: receive visa issuance email/collect passport, step 1: complete the e-form online.

Follow the below steps to fill out the e-form online.

• Go to the Korea Visa Navigator page and select your country. Pick “Short Term visit” and “90 days or less”.
• Scroll to the bottom and select “Ordinary Tourist C-3-9”.
• You will see multiple streams. The first stream on the list is for travelers visiting South Korea for tourism. Click on “e-Form (Visa Application)”.
• Read through the procedure guidance page and click “Fill out the e-Form”.
• Select the South Korean diplomatic office that you intend to visit, upload a face photo and complete the form.

After you complete the form, print the file with the barcode on it. You will receive an email with your application number. If you displace the barcode file, you can find it by entering your details on the Check Application Status page .

Prepare the printed visa application form (the one with the barcode) and attach copies of the other required documents. 

Visit the South Korean embassy or consulate that you picked during the application.

Formally submit your application in person at the embassy. Pay the visa fee in cash.

Check your email regularly in case the embassy requests additional documents. The visa process can take anywhere from 4 to 14 working days depending on the embassy. 

Receive Confirmation of Visa Issuance or Visa Grant Notice. Retrieve it online and print it before traveling to South Korea. 

If the embassy or consulate of South Korea still issues visa stickers in your country, you will have to collect your passport or request to mail it to you.

NOTE South Korean embassies no longer issue visa stickers inside passports. Stickers are still being issued in countries where visa application centers handle the process but this is going to be phased out soon.

Entry Procedure at the Border

Before going to the immigration counters, make sure to complete the paper Arrival Card. The airline staff will give you one onboard or you can grab one from the immigration. 

Present your passport along with the Visa Grant Notice and the Arrival Card to the immigration officer. Get stamped in and enter South Korea.

What is the minimum bank balance required for south korea visa.

There is no official statement regarding the minimum bank balance by South Korean immigration. It will depend on your circumstances and nationality.

That being said, anything less than 2,500 USD may be considered too low to sustain a trip to South Korea. 

Can I apply for South Korea tourist visa online?

You can begin the application process online by filling out the application form (form #17). However, the next steps require you to visit a South Korean embassy in person. Applications completely online are not possible.

Is a cover letter required for South Korea tourist visa?

A cover letter is not required for the South Korea tourist visa. But you can still submit one if you need to explain your circumstances in detail.

How to Fill Out a South Korea Visa Application Form [Step by Step Guide]

One of the requirements in getting a visa is an application form; it may be done electronically, in writing through paper or online submission. Getting things rights in the is the first step in getting your visa approved, the information here should be the same as your submitted documents.

South Korea Visa Application Form

First, you will need to download the form. It’s better to do this electronically and not in writing as you can edit it immediately. It would help if you also wrote as neatly as possible in case you want to write. However, there’s a PDF and Document available, and I highly recommend this. Click the link to download the form. Print it at an A4 sized paper.

• Word Document
• Hangul File
• Please Fill in Block Letters or Capital Letters, make sure the CAPS LOCK is on so that’s easier
• Prepare your Check symbol or simply copy it from the form
• In case you have blank answers, write N/A (Not Applicable)
• As per the examples below, I just used another color so that you will know what to fill up, but make sure you use black pen/ink
• Information provided here is not 100% true as this is just an example; however, you must provide factual information on your application

1. Personal Details

On the first page, ready your passport (s) for the information asked.

• Full name in English or the characters of your passport, in case you have a Middle name, you can skip writing it as Koreans usually don’t have one
• Chinese Name or Chinese Characters of your English Name
• Your gender
• Birthdate using the format given – Year, Month, Day in numbers
• Nationality
• Country of Birth
• National Identity No. – these are mostly for citizens of countries who each have an identity number, for Filipinos as we don’t have one you can put “N/A.”
• In case you have other names used in your previous application or visit to South Korea, enter it, if none, just plainly check “No” and write “N/A.”
• If you are a dual citizen, answer the question “yes” and list the country you are a citizen of, if not check “No” and write “N/A.”

2. Details of Visa Application

This is the newest part of the Visa Application Form. Make sure they are in line with your purpose of visit.

• Period of Stay – you will need to choose if it’s long-term or short-term
• Status of Stay – there are many categories you could choose, here are common ones:

Short Term:

• C-2 Short-term Business
• C-3-9 Tourist
• C-3-1 Short-term (General)
• C-3-3 Medical Tourist
• C-3-4 Business Visitor (General)
• F-1 Visiting or Joining Family
• F-2 Resident
• F-6 Marriage to Korean Citizen

That’s it for page one, don’t write anything under “For Official Use Only.”

3. Passport Information

Let’s go now to the second page, ready your passport again.

• Passport Type – check which category is applicable, we usually have the Regular one
• Passport Number – found in the bio-page
• Issuing Country
• Where the passport is issued
• Issuance Date – you can use the format in your passport
• Expiry date
• If you have another passport, write the information asked

4. Contact Information

• Home Country address or your permanent address
• In case you are currently living in another place that’s’ different from your home address then type it – you can place N/A if it’s the same
• Your functioning cellphone number
• Telephone number
• E-mail address
• Emergency Contact Information

5. Marital Status

• In case you are single or divorced, check the category and type N/A
• Your Civil Status
• Information about your partner
• If you both have children, you answer this question – this pertains to humans, and I would like to answer 6 if cats were included (haha)

6. Education

• The highest degree you have – if you are up to college, then its Bachelor’s Degree, should you be up to elementary – then check other and write Elementary Graduate or up to Grade 10, etc.
• Name of the school – this one is related to the 6.1 question, so basically where you graduated or attended school last
• Address of the school indicated in 6.2 – in city, province, country format

7. Employment

• Choose which category suits you best – if you are a government employee, it’s under civil servant, businessmen are entrepreneurs, freelancers, or digital nomads can consider themselves self-employed.
• Details of employment – Make sure the details here are the same as the papers you are going to submit – Certificate of Employment, Business Permit, School Certificate, etc.

8. Details of Visit

This is one of the most crucial parts of your application

• Purpose of Visit – if you are there for tourism, check tourism, however, if you got invited by a friend it’s better to use visiting family/relatives/friends especially if you are staying in their place rather than hotels. Be careful here as this is one of the most common reasons in getting denied for a South Korea Tourist Visa .
• How many days you will be staying in Korea – your budget must be enough for your stay
• Planned date of entry
• Where you are staying in Korea
• Contact number in Korea – you can use the hotel’s number
• Previous travels to South Korea in the last 5 years
• Previous travels to other countries in the previous 5 years – you can refer to your passport
• Family member – spouse, parents, siblings, or children that are currently in South Korea
• Family member – spouse, parents, siblings, or children that are traveling with you to South Korea – this does not include friends, you must have the same details of visit in the application

9. Details of Invitation

• In case you are invited to Korea by a friend, relative, or family or a company, then you must state their information.

10. Funding Details

• Estimated travel costs, it’s usually days of stay x USD 100
• The one who will pay for your expenses – if you are paying for yourself, then you can put “Myself,” in case another person will then you have to provide their information. You’ll need a guarantee letter also and the financial documents of the person, especially if you are unemployed or don’t have enough funds.

11. Assistance with the form

You can leave this blank as the travel agent who will assess your documents and pass this for you will put in their details here.

12. Declaration

Read the notice before signing the declaration. Make sure to double-check your answers.

Application was 7 days before but there were months it took 30 days, so it’s better to do it a month before. I also suggest you renew your passport now.

• Any used OECD countries visas such as Japan, Schengen or American visa.
• Meeting Health and Security Requirements

Ensure that you meet any health and security requirements outlined by the South Korean authorities or the specific Embassy/Consulate handling your application. This may include medical examinations or security clearances, if applicable.

You can download and print it to fill out by hand, but I strongly recommend using the electronic version for easy editing and simplicity. If you choose the printed form, make sure your handwriting is neat.

Now that you are ready to fill out this form, here is a section-by-section guide on what you should complete:

Section 1: Personal Information

As you begin filling out your South Korea visa application, the first step is to provide important personal information. Here’s a complete guide to assist you with this:

• Full Name: Provide your complete name in English characters, exactly as it appears in your passport. If you have a middle name, you can omit it, as Korean names typically lack one.
• Chinese Name: If applicable, enter your name in Chinese characters corresponding to your English name.
• Gender : Specify your gender.
• Birthdate : Format your birthdate as Year, Month, and Day in numerical digits.
• Nationality : Indicate your nationality.
• Country of Birth : Mention the country in which you were born.
• National Identity No. : In some countries, citizens are required to have a national identity number, such as Aadhar in India or the National Registration Identity Card Number (NRIC) in Malaysia. If your country does not have this requirement, simply write ‘N/A.
• Other Names: If you have used different names during previous South Korea visa applications or visits, record them here. Otherwise, select “No” and write “N/A.”
• Dual Citizenship: If you hold dual citizenship, answer “yes” and list the countries you are a citizen of. If not, select “No” and write “N/A.”

Section 2: Details of Visa Application

• Period of Stay: Choose between long-term and short-term, depending on your intended duration of stay.
• Status of Stay: Select the category that best corresponds to your visit purpose. Common categories include Short-Term options like Tourist or Business and Long-Term categories like Resident or Marriage to a Korean Citizen.

Section 3: Passport Information

Moving to the second page of the form, you need to provide details about your passport information:

• Passport Type: Check the relevant category, often “Regular” for most applicants.
• Passport Number: Enter your passport number as found on the bio page.
• Issuing Country: Specify the country where your passport was issued.
• Where the Passport is Issued: Provide the place of issuance.
• Issuance Date: Use the format as indicated in your passport.
• Expiry Date: Record the passport’s expiration date.
• Additional Passport: If you possess another passport, furnish the requested information.

Section 4: Contact Information

Next, share your contact details:

• Home Country Address: Enter your permanent address in your home country.
• Alternate Address: If you currently reside at an address different from your permanent one, include it here. Use “N/A” if both addresses are the same.
• Cell Phone Number: Provide an active mobile phone number.
• Telephone Number: Include a landline number if available.
• Email Address: Enter your email address.
• Emergency Contact Information: Provide information about an emergency contact.

Section 5: Marital Status and Family information

Your marital status is the focus here:

• Single or Divorced: Indicate the appropriate category, and use “N/A” if not applicable.
• Civil Status: Share details about your marital status.
• Information About Your Partner: Provide information about your spouse or partner if applicable.
• Children: If you have children accompanying you on the trip, answer accordingly.

Section 6: Education

The educational section inquires about your highest degree and educational history:

• Highest Degree: Select the highest degree you hold, such as a Bachelor’s Degree or an alternative option like Elementary Graduate.
• Name of School: Mention the name of the school where you last graduated or attended.
• School Address: Include the school’s address, following the format of city, province, and country.

Section 7: Employment

Here, you’ll specify your employment status:

• Category Selection: Choose the employment category that best fits your situation. Options include government employees, entrepreneurs, self-employed, and more.
• Details of Employment: Ensure the information aligns with the documents you plan to submit, such as a Certificate of Employment or Business Permit.

Section 8: Details of Visit

This segment is pivotal to your application:

• Purpose of Visit: Select the appropriate purpose, whether it’s tourism or visiting family/relatives/friends. Be cautious with your choice, as selecting the wrong purpose can lead to visa denials, particularly for tourist visas.
• Duration of Stay: Specify the number of days you plan to stay in Korea. Ensure your budget aligns with this duration.
• Planned Entry Date: Provide the intended date of your entry into Korea.
• Accommodation: Indicate where you plan to stay in Korea.
• Korea Contact Number: Provide a contact number in Korea. If staying in a hotel, you can use the hotel’s number.
• Travel History: Detail your previous travels to South Korea within the last 5 years.
• Travel History to Other Countries: Specify your travel history to other countries during the preceding 5 years. You can reference your passport for this information.
• Family Members in Korea: If you have family members, such as a spouse, parents, siblings, or children, currently residing in South Korea, include their details.
• Accompanying Family Members: If any of these family members are travelling with you to South Korea, provide their information. Note that this section does not apply to friends; it should mirror the details of your visit as stated in the application.

Section 9: Details of Invitation

If you are invited to Korea by a friend, relative, family, or company, you must provide their information in this section.

Section 10: Funding Details

Share funding-related information:

• Estimated Travel Costs: Calculate your estimated travel costs, typically computed as days of stay multiplied by USD 100.
• Expense Payer: Indicate who will cover your expenses. If self-funded, write “Myself.” For expenses covered by another person, provide their details. Ensure you include a guarantee letter and the financial documents of the sponsor, especially if you are unemployed or lack sufficient funds.

Section 11: Assistance with the Form

Leave this section blank, as the travel agent who assesses your documents and submits your application will complete it. We also provide assistance throughout the entire process of obtaining a South Korea Tourist Visa. If interested, please contact us now!

Read the notice carefully before signing the declaration. Ensure all your answers are double-checked for accuracy. Armed with these detailed instructions, you now possess the knowledge required to competently complete your South Korea Visa Application Form!

Tips for Applying for a South Korean Tourist Visa

• When you’re completing the form, use big letters or turn on CAPS LOCK to make it easier to read and fill out.
• For checkboxes, you can either prepare a check symbol or copy it directly from the form.
• In cases where you encounter questions with no applicable answers, simply write ‘N/A,’ signifying “Not Applicable.”

Step 4: Making Payment for Your South Korea Visa on the Visa Portal (e-visa or K-ETA only)

Once you’ve completed your visa application on the South Korea visa portal, the next step is to make your payment. South Korea’s visa application process typically requires an e-payment for the visa fee. Make sure that you fill out the correct payment details and double-check before proceeding. Once you’ve verified everything, confirm the payment.

• Remember, having an appointment is compulsory for visiting any South Korean diplomatic mission, so be sure to make your reservation in advance.
• Submit the South Korea visa application: Once you’ve identified the correct Embassy or Consulate and have appointment confirmation it is time to submit your visa application following their guidelines. Ensure you have all the necessary documents and information ready for submission.

Now, you have to wait for some time for the visa application to be processed.

Applying with a Sponsor in South Korea

If you have a sponsor or host in South Korea, they can apply for a “Confirmation of Visa Issuance” on your behalf through the South Korea Visa Portal of the Korea Immigration Office. The steps include:

• Online Application: Your sponsor must complete the online South Korea Visa application form.
• Payment: Pay the required fee for the application.
• Document Submission: Attach the necessary documents for the South Korea visa, depending on the purpose of your visit.
• Confirmation of Visa Issuance: Await confirmation of South Korea Visa Issuance. If the application is approved.
• Confirmation Dispatch: Print the Confirmation for your records.

Please Note: Visa processing times vary based on the specific Embassy or Consulate where you apply. It’s advisable to submit your completed application at least 15 days before your intended travel date but no earlier than three months.

SOUTH KOREA VISA APPLICATION FORM

We’ve been receiving a lot of messages asking us for a copy of the South Korean Visa application form. Looks like the visa pages of the website of the South Korean Embassy in Manila have been down for a couple of weeks now. Either that or they moved to another website, the address of which is still unknown to us.

Anyway, yep, fortunately, we were able to save a copy of the form.

Update: They released a new form in October 2020.

I will be applying for a Korean visa anytime soon, so I have already downloaded the form. However, upon browsing through it, I noticed that Item 5 calls for the marital status details. I admit I am still married; but can I dispense with the name of the father of my children due to the following reasons, to wit:

1. I have been a single parent for 22 years; 2. I am not privy to the whereabouts of my husband for that 22 long years; 3. I raised and educated my children without receiving any support from their father; 4. I and my children lived our life for these 22 long years working hard to earn our living and be successful in our respective careers.

Important Reminders

• You can download the form and accomplish it online/electronically. Download the latest version of the application form here.  
• You can also accomplish the form by hand.
• The application form must be printed on A4-sized paper.
• You can accomplish the form using either the English or Korean language.
• Write in all capital letters when filling out the form.
• The Embassy doesn’t have rules regarding font style and size. However, this is a formal transaction so choose font size of at least 12 and font styles commonly used in business letters like Arial, Calibri, Tahoma, Times New Roman, etc. If you’re having difficulty adjusting the font settings, ask assistance from the travel agency so they can provide you with a ready-to-answer application form in PDF format.
• The answers should be TYPEWRITTEN/COMPUTERIZED as most travel agencies no longer accept forms that are handwritten.
• Write N/A if an item does not apply to you.
• A checkmark (√ ) should be used when filling out items with multiple selections.
• The accomplished form should have no erasures.

How To Fill Out the South Korean Visa Application Form: A Step-by-Step Guide

We’ll teach you how to accomplish the application form by focusing on one section at a time. Take note that RED text in the following screenshots is for emphasis only.

1. Personal Details

1.1 Input your Last Name and then your First Name.

1.2 Indicate your Chinese name if you have one. Write N/A if you have none.

1.3 Put a check on the appropriate space if you’re a Male or a Female.

1.4 Write your birthday in this format: Year/Month/Day.

1.5 Indicate your nationality.

1.6 Write the name of the country where you were born.

1.7 Write your National Identity Number if you have one. Write N/A if you have none.

1.8 Check ‘Yes’ if you have used other names to enter or depart Korea. Indicate your previous Family Name and Given Name. Check ‘No’ if you haven’t used other names and write N/A on the Family Name and Given Name.

1.9 Check ‘Yes’ if you’re a citizen of another country and indicate which country. Check ‘No’ if you’re not and write N/A on the space for the name of the country.

Guidelines for the Photo:

• The picture must be taken within 6 months from the date of application.
• The photo should use a white background.
• Don’t wear a hat.
• Your face should be neutral in the photo.
• Paste the photo on the application form.

For Official Use Only – Leave this section blank.

2. Passport Information

2.1 Put a check on the type of passport that you currently have.

2.2 Write your Passport Number.

2.3 Indicate the country where the passport was issued.

2.4 Indicate the specific location or office where your passport was issued .

2.5 Enter the date your passport was issued.

2.6 Enter your passport’s expiry date. Make sure that your passport has at least 6 months of validity left .

2.7 Check ‘No’ if you have no other valid passports and leave the ‘Details’ section blank. Check ‘Yes’ if you have other valid passports and indicate the Passport Type, Passport Number, Country, and Expiry Date.

3. Contact Information

3.1 Write your permanent address in your home country.

3.2 You should only fill this out if it’s different from your permanent address.

3.3 Write your cellphone number.

3.4 Write your telephone number.

3.5 Indicate your active e-mail address.

3.6 Provide your emergency contact information with the Full Name, Country of Residence, Telephone Number, and your relationship with the person.

4. Marital Status and Family Details

4.1 Put a check on your marital status.

4.2 Leave this section blank if you have checked ‘Divorced’ or ‘Single.’ If you checked ‘Married,’ provide the following details of your spouse: Family Name, Given Name, Date of Birth, Nationality, Residential Address, and Contact Number.

4.3 Check ‘No’ if you don’t have any children yet. Check ‘Yes’ if you already have children and indicate the number of children that you have.

5. Education

5.1 Check the highest level of education that you have completed. If you’ve checked ‘Other,’ provide specific details.

5.2 Write the name of your school.

5.3 Write your school’s location.

6. Employment

6.1 Check the type of employment you’re currently under.

6.2 Provide your employment details including the following: Name of Company/Institute/School, Your Position, Address of Company/Institute/School, and Telephone Number.

7. Details of Visit

7.1 From the list of options, check the purpose of your visit to South Korea.

7.2 Indicate the length of your stay for your trip to South Korea.

7.3 Indicate the intended date of entry. Make sure that it’s within three months from the date of application.

7.4 Write your intended address in South Korea during your stay. You don’t need to have prior reservations or bookings.

7.5 Indicate the contact number that you’ll be using during your trip.

7.6 Check ‘Yes’ if you have previously traveled to South Korea in the last 5 years and provide additional details like the number of times you’ve visited and the purpose of your most recent visit. Check ‘No’ if it’s your first trip to South Korea.

7.7 Check ‘Yes’ if you have previously traveled outside your country of residence and provide additional details like the name of the country you have visited, the purpose of your visit, and the period of your stay. Otherwise, check ‘No.’

7.8 Check ‘Yes’ if you’re traveling with any of your family members (spouse, parent, children, siblings). You also have to provide the following information of your companion/s: Full Name, Date of Birth, Nationality, and relationship to you. Check ‘No’ if you’re not traveling with a family member and write N/A on the ‘Details’ section.

8. Details of Sponsor

8.1 Check ‘Yes’ if you have a sponsor in South Korea and provide the following details of your sponsor: Name, Date of Birth or Business Registration Number, Relationship to you, Address, and Telephone Number. Otherwise, check ‘No.’

9. Funding Details

9.1 Indicate the estimated cost of your entire trip to South Korea. For reference, the average budget per day is around Php 5,000. Make sure that you’ll be able to show that you have enough funds in your bank account for the whole duration of your trip.

9.2 Mention who will fund your trip (including yourself or an institute) and provide the following details: Name of Person/Company/Institute, Relationship to you, Type of Support, and Contact Number.

10. Assistance with this Form

10.1 Check ‘Yes’ if someone assisted you in filling out this form and provide the following details: Full Name, Date of Birth, Telephone Number, and Relationship to you. Otherwise, check ‘No.’

11. Declaration

Declare that all the details and information you have provided in the application form are true and correct based on your knowledge and belief.

Indicate the date you will submit your VISA application and provide your signature. If you’re under 17 years old, your parent or legal guardian will sign the form for you.

General Visa Application Requirements to Get Korean Visitor Visa

• Tourist visa application for South Korea – Completed Korean visa application form.
• Original and signed passport – The passport has to be valid for a minimum of 6 months prior to going into South Korea and three months after departing South Korea. It needs to have at the very least 2 extra visa pages and can not be older than ten years.
• Passport type photo – Photo needs to be no older than six months and should be 35 x 40mm in size.
• Previous passport – Give a previous passport if you had any.
• Previous visas– Copies of previous Korean visas details if you had any.
• Flight tickets to South Korea – Reservation of return or round trip flight tickets. In some circumstances the Korean visa office may request pre-paid flight tickets to South Korea.
• Travel insurance policy – Proof of travel insurance coverage with a minimum cover set by the Korean embassy provided with the Certificate of Insurance policy and the table of benefits. The travel insurance policy need to cover the cost of repatriation for medical reasons and the Certificate of Currency must be issued by an insurer. If you are thinking of utilizing your credit card travel insurance for your travel to South Korea, please call Korean consular office for more information and travel insurance policy requirements for the Korean visa.
• Original financial institution statements – Original financial institution statements for the last 3 months showing enough funds to cover your visit in South Korea. If statements are printed online then it needs to be Confirmed (stamped) by the financial institution representatives.
• Hotel Reservations in South Korea – Copy of confirmed hotel reservations including name of the applicant, name and address of the hotel, time-span of stay. In a lot of conditions, only bookings which are partially or completely pre-paid can be accepted.
• Employment letter – This letter has to be: original and signed letter from employer written on company letter head paper, confirming your ongoing employment, the status of employment, regular monthly income and annual leave. Additionally, please supply your 3 most recent pay slips. If you are self-employed: provide certified copies of business registration, income tax return.
• For students. Please give the following:
• Proof of current student status: Certificate of Enrollment.
• Original and signed letter from university written on university letter head paper, confirming ongoing enrolment, confirming the payment of tuition fees or any kind of scholarships, and confirming term break.
• Insurance from Organisation/University– Supply a letter from the University stating the purpose, period of travel and confirmation that you are going to be covered by the insurance coverage for the entire journey together with the Certificate of Currency and summary of benefits.

As a whole, visa applications for Korean visa should be sent for an optimum of 6 months, and no behind 15 days, before the trip.

How to apply on paper for a study permit

Step 1: Read the guide and get your application package

Read the instruction guide carefully before you complete your application . We won’t refund your application fee, so make sure you’re eligible for a study permit before you apply.

Once you have read the guide, you can prepare your application package. You must select the country/territory from which you will be applying to get your local visa office instructions.

Step 2: Complete your application and attach your documents

To make sure you submit  all the pages  of form IMM 1294 with your application package, follow these steps:

Note:  If you validate the form before printing, you can make sure that you have answered all the questions and help avoid delays in processing your application.

• The last page of the form, with barcodes and a signature line, will automatically be created.
• Print, sign and date the form.
• print on white, bond-quality, non-glossy paper
• use a laser printer
• Place the barcode page on top of your package. If you have more than one package, place a separate barcode page on each one.

Your application may be delayed if any information or document is missing. The document checklist in the application package lists all the documents to include. Answer all questions carefully, completely and truthfully.

You and each one of your family members  must  fill out and sign their own forms even if you are travelling together as a family. If you are under the age of 18, your parent or guardian must sign your form.

Step 3: Pay your application fees

If you need an electronic travel authorization or visa

If you need an electronic travel authorization (eTA) or visa, we’ll issue it automatically at the same time as your study permit. You don’t need to apply separately or pay another fee.

In most cases, your fees will include:

• processing fees for you and anyone you include in your application

Third-party fees

Depending on your situation, you may need to pay fees to third parties for:

• medical exams
• police certificates
• language testing
• services at a visa application centre, if you use one

If you need to use a third party, pay them directly for their services.

Biometrics fee

In most cases, you should pay a biometrics fee  when you pay your application fees . If you don’t, you may experience delays. The biometrics fee covers the cost of collecting fingerprints and a digital photo.  Find out if you need to give your biometrics .

Step 4: Submit your application

When you submit your application, you also need to submit:

• your  original  travel passport
• all pages with visas
• all pages with stamps
• all pages with your biographical data (name, date of birth, passport number), including your photo

You can submit your application to the closest visa application centre  to

• receive service in the local language
• take advantage of the centre’s extended hours of service
• track your application online
• have the assurance that your application is complete and all the proper documentation is included

Application for a Study Permit made outside of Canada

You can’t fill out and save the application form using your Internet browser. To use the form, you need to:

• Use your computer (Mac or PC). The form won’t open on mobile devices (iPads, tablets, mobile phones, etc.)
• Install Adobe Reader 10 (or higher)
• Download the PDF file to your computer . Save the file in a place you can remember.
• Make sure you use Adobe Reader to open the form. Sometimes if you try to open the form directly, it will use your Internet browser to try to open it.

Note: If you are applying online , you don’t need to print and sign the form. Leave the signature section empty.

The Visa Waiver Program  (VWP) enables most citizens or nationals of participating countries *  to travel to the United States for tourism or business for stays of 90 days or less without obtaining a visa. Travelers must have a valid  Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA)  approval prior to travel and meet all requirements explained below. If you prefer to have a visa in your passport, you may still apply for a visitor (B) visa.

Visa Waiver Program Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention Act of 2015

Under the Visa Waiver Program Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention Act of 2015, travelers in the following categories must obtain a visa prior to traveling to the United States as they are no longer eligible to travel under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP):

• Nationals of VWP countries who have traveled to or been present in Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, or Yemen on or after March 1, 2011 (with limited exceptions for travel for diplomatic or military purposes in the service of a VWP country).
• Nationals of VWP countries who have traveled to or been present in Cuba on or after January 12, 2021 (with limited exceptions for travel for diplomatic or military purposes in the service of a VWP country).
• Nationals of VWP countries who are also nationals of Cuba, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, or Syria.

Requirements for Using the Visa Waiver Program (VWP)

You must meet  all  the following requirements to travel to the United States on the VWP:

Travel Purpose Must be Permitted on a Visitor (B) Visa

The following are examples of activities permitted while in the United States on the VWP. In addition, transiting through the United States to other countries is generally permitted for VWP travelers.

• consult with business associates
• attend a scientific, educational, professional, or business convention or conference
• attend short-term training (you may not be paid by any source in the United States with the exception of expenses incidental to your stay)
• negotiate a contract

• vacation (holiday)
• visit with friends or relatives
• medical treatment
• participation in social events hosted by fraternal, social, or service organizations
• participation by amateurs in musical, sports, or similar events or contests, if not being paid for participating
• enrollment in a short recreational course of study, not for credit toward a degree (for example, a two-day cooking class while on vacation)

Travel Purposes Not Permitted on Visa Waiver Program – Examples:

• study, for credit
• work as foreign press, radio, film, journalists, or other information media
• permanent residence in the United States

Must Be a Citizen or National of a VWP Designated Country *

You must be a citizen or national of the following countries *  to be eligible to travel to the United States under the VWP.

• Czech Republic
• Liechtenstein
• Netherlands
• New Zealand
• South Korea
• Switzerland
• United Kingdom**

**To be eligible to travel under the VWP, British citizens must have the unrestricted right of permanent abode in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man.

Each Traveler Must Have a Valid ESTA

In order to travel without a visa on the VWP, you must have valid Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) approval prior to boarding a U.S. bound air or sea carrier. ESTA is a web-based system operated by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to determine eligibility to travel to the United States for tourism or business under the VWP. Visit the  ESTA webpage  on the CBP website for more information.

Updating Your ESTA

In most cases, your ESTA will be valid for two years.  You also must obtain a new ESTA if you: (1) receive a new passport, including an emergency or temporary passport; (2) change your name; (3) change your gender; (4) change your country of citizenship; or (5) need to change your responses to any of the “yes” or “no” questions on the ESTA application.

These individuals can apply for visas using regular appointment processes at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Consular sections overseas may be able to expedite your interview date if there is an urgent, unforseen situation such as a funeral, medical emergency, or school start date. If an individual who is exempt from the Act because of his or her diplomatic or military presence in one of the seven countries is denied ESTA, he or she may go to the  CBP website , or contact the  CBP information Center . The traveler may also apply for a nonimmigrant visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection strongly recommends that any traveler to the United States check his or her  ESTA status  prior to making any travel reservations or travelling to the United States. More information is available on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) website . 

Have the Correct Type of Passport

You must have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after your planned departure from the United States (unless exempted by  country-specific agreements ). For families, each member of your family, including infants and children, must have a passport. 

In addition, you must have an e-passport to use the VWP. An e-passport is an enhanced secure passport with an embedded electronic chip. The chip can be scanned to match the identity of the traveler to the passport. E-Passports must be in compliance with standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). You can readily identify an e-passport, by a symbol on the cover. See the example below. More information about e-passports is available on the DHS website .

Emergency and Temporary Passports

If you use an   emergency or temporary passport to enter the United States on the VWP, the passport must be an e-passport. This includes VWP travelers who are transiting the United States.

May I apply for a visa instead of using the VWP?

Yes, you may apply for a visitor (B) visa if you prefer to do so or if you are not eligible for VWP travel. Additionally, you need to apply for a visa if you will be traveling on a private aircraft or other non-VWP approved air or sea carrier. Review the  approved carriers list . Also, if you intend to stay longer than 90 days, then you need to apply for a visa. 

I was denied a visa under section 214(b). May I use the VWP?

A recent visa refusal for any reason could result in denial of ESTA authorization, additional review at the port of entry, or denial of admission to the United States. If you are uncertain if you qualify for VWP travel, you may apply for a visa.

Trips to Canada, Mexico, or nearby islands

If you are admitted to the United States under the VWP, you may take a short trip to Canada, Mexico, or a nearby island and generally be readmitted to the United States under the VWP for the remainder of the original 90 days granted upon your initial arrival in the United States. Therefore, the length of time of your total stay, including the short trip, must be 90 days or less. See the  CBP website . Citizens of VWP countries *  who reside in Mexico, Canada, or a nearby island are generally exempted from the requirement to show onward travel to another country *  when entering the United States. How can a country* join the VWP?

A country *  must meet various requirements to be considered for designation in the Visa Waiver Program. Requirements include, but are not limited to:

• enhanced law enforcement and security-related data sharing with the United States;
• issuing e-passports;
• having a visitor (B) visa refusal rate of less than three percent (for initial designation);
• timely reporting of both blank and issued lost and stolen passports; and
• maintenance of high counterterrorism, law enforcement, border control, and document security standards.

Designation as a VWP country *  is at the discretion of the U.S. government. Meeting the objective requirements of the VWP does not guarantee a country *  will receive VWP designation.

Entering the United States

An approved ESTA allows you to travel to a U.S. port-of-entry (generally an airport) and request permission to enter the United States, but an approved ESTA does not guarantee entry into the United States. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials at the port-of-entry have authority to permit or deny admission to the United States. Learn more on the  CBP website .

Extending your stay

If you enter the United States under the Visa Waiver Program, you are not permitted to extend your stay in the United States beyond the initial admission period. You must depart the United States on or before the date on your admission stamp when you entered the United States. Change of status

If you enter the United States under the Visa Waiver Program, you are not permitted to change status in the United States. See  Change My Nonimmigrant Status  on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website.

What if I am traveling to Guam or the Northern Mariana Islands?

Citizens of Australia, Brunei, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Nauru, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and the United Kingdom do not need a visa or ESTA to visit both Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands because of the Guam-CNMI Visa Waiver Program, though they must complete Form I-736 prior to travel.  People's Republic of China Passport holders also do not need a visa if they complete Form I-736 for temporary admission into the Northern Mariana Islands. For more information on the Guam-CNMI Visa Waiver Program,  click here

* With respect to all references to “country” or “countries” on this page, it should be noted that the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, Pub. L. No. 96-8, Section 4(b)(1), provides that “[w]henever the laws of the United States refer or relate to foreign countries, nations, states, governments, or similar entities, such terms shall include and such laws shall apply with respect to Taiwan.” 22 U.S.C. § 3303(b)(1). Accordingly, all references to “country” or “countries” in the Visa Waiver Program authorizing legislation, Section 217 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, 8 U.S.C. 1187, are read to include Taiwan. This is consistent with the United States’ one-China policy, under which the United States has maintained unofficial relations with Taiwan since 1979.
