Quick summary:

  • Who requires it: All nationalities that are not visa-exempt (or not eligible for K-ETA)
  • Validity: 3 months for single-entry; 6 months for double-entry

There are three types of South Korean tourist visas – single-entry, double-entry and multiple-entry.

In some countries, South Korea has outsourced visa processing to Visa Application Centers such as VFS Global. Visa Application Centers charge their own service fee for handling the visa applications.

The fee is higher, lower, or exempted for certain nationalities. You can find the complete list on the Korea Visa Portal .

Processing time

Applications are reviewed by a particular embassy so processing time is not universal. Some embassies process tourist visas in 4 days, others in 7 days, some in 14 days or more.

In countries where the application process is outsourced to Visa Application Centers, express processing is available for an additional fee.

From understanding the types of visas available to collecting your visa and preparing for your journey, by the end of this article, you’ll have all the information you need to embark on your South Korean adventure with confidence!

WHAT IS COVERED IN THIS ARTICLE?

Understanding the South Korea Tourist Visa

South Korea Tourist Visa

When it comes to understanding the South Korean tourist Visa, here’s what you need to know:

Short-Term Tourist Visa (C-3) A.K.A. South Korea Tourist Visa

If you’re planning to explore South Korea’s beauty and culture for a short stay, the Short-Term Tourist Visa, known as C-3, is your go-to-choice. With this visa, you can enjoy up to 90 days in South Korea, perfect for tourists, transit passengers, individuals seeking medical treatment, or those attending cultural events.

However, keep in mind that this visa doesn’t allow you to engage in any paid work during your stay.

Step-by-Step Application Process for a South Korea Visa Application

Now that you’ve got a grasp of the basics regarding the South Korean Tourist visa, let’s dive into the core of this guide: a step-by-step walkthrough for your South Korea visa application.

Step 1: Determine Whether You Need to Apply for a South Korea Visa or Not

The first step is to determine whether you fall into the category of travelers who need a South Korea Tourist Visa or if you are among those fortunate enough to be exempted from this requirement. You can check this on South Korea’s official Visa Portal.

Visa Exemption for Certain Nationalities

If you’re from specific countries like the European Union nations (except Cyprus), Australia, Canada, or the United States, South Korea offers you the privilege of visa exemption, allowing you to enter the country without a visa for varying durations.

However, such travelers from these visa-exempt nations must complete an online application for an electronic visitor visa waiver for South Korea, known as K-ETA . which offers the convenience of a fully digital process. Before you do anything else, make sure to verify your eligibility for the K-ETA.

Visa Requirements for Certain Nationalities

Application-Method

If you do not qualify for visa-free entry, you will need to apply for a South Korean Tourist Visa through the Korean Embassy. The key factors to consider for this include your nationality and the purpose of your visit. Remember, South Korea doesn’t issue sticker visas to be affixed to your passport. Also, having a travel history, especially in OECD countries, can significantly increase your chances of getting approved for a Korean visa.

Step 2: Prepare for South Korea Visa Requirements

After confirming that you do require a South Korean Tourist Visa, the next crucial step is to diligently prepare all the necessary documents, including your passport and any specific requirements for the South Korean Tourist Visa well in advance.

This foresight ensures that you won’t find yourself in a last-minute scramble when these essential documents are requested during the submission process.

South Korea Tourist Visa Requirements

Here is a short list of the essential documents and criteria you need to meet to successfully apply for a South Korea Tourist Visa:

  • Passport and Passport Photos
  • Ensure your passport is valid for at least another six months from your planned date of entry into South Korea.
  • Your passport should have a minimum of two blank pages for visa stamping.
  • Provide passport-size photos (3.5 cm x 4.5 cm) that meet specific criteria: white background, recent (taken within the last three months), neutral facial expression, fully visible face and ears, and no glasses.
  • Visa Application Form
  • Obtain the South Korea Visa Application Form, either online e-from from the Embassy or Consulate website, in person at the Embassy/Consulate, or from a visa application agency if you’re using their services.
  • Complete the form accurately with a black or dark blue pen, ensuring clarity and legibility. The details on how to fill this form are discussed in the next step, so read on!
  • Proof of Travel Itinerary
  • Include a copy of your return or onward flight ticket, indicating your planned entry and exit dates from South Korea. No need to purchase an actual ticket or simply create an itinerary with day-to-day activities, places to visit.
  • Prepare a Proof of Accommodation (a hotel booking)
  • Provide evidence of your accommodation in South Korea, such as a hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from a host if you’ll be staying with family or friends.
  • Financial Statements
  • Demonstrate your financial capability to cover the duration of your stay by submitting bank statements and income tax returns. Bank statements should be at least for latest 6 months.
  • Prepare your employment and income documents.

  • Any used OECD countries visas such as Japan, Schengen or American visa.
  • Meeting Health and Security Requirements

Ensure that you meet any health and security requirements outlined by the South Korean authorities or the specific Embassy/Consulate handling your application. This may include medical examinations or security clearances, if applicable.

  • Understanding Visa Fees and Payment Methods

Familiarize yourself with the South Korea visa fees and the accepted payment methods specified by the Embassy or Consulate where you are applying. Be prepared to pay the required fee in cash during the application process.

Remember, the specific South Korea visa requirements can vary depending on your nationality and the type of visa you’re applying for. It’s essential to always check with the relevant Embassy or Consulate for the most up-to-date and accurate information before you start your application process!

Step 3: Filling Out the Visa Application

e form sample

For this step, you need to first download the South Korean Visa application form from Korea Visa Portal . You can download and print it to fill out by hand, but I strongly recommend using the electronic version for easy editing and simplicity. If you choose the printed form, make sure your handwriting is neat.

Now that you are ready to fill out this form, here is a section-by-section guide on what you should complete:

Section 1: Personal Information

As you begin filling out your South Korea visa application, the first step is to provide important personal information. Here’s a complete guide to assist you with this:

Once you’ve verified everything, confirm the payment.

The next step now is to submit your visa application!

Now, you have to wait for some time for the visa application to be processed.

Applying with a Sponsor in South Korea

If you have a sponsor or host in South Korea, they can apply for a “Confirmation of Visa Issuance” on your behalf through the South Korea Visa Portal of the Korea Immigration Office. The steps include:

  • Online Application: Your sponsor must complete the online South Korea Visa application form.

Visa Validity and Duration

Understanding the validity and duration of your South Korea visa is crucial for planning your trip. Here’s what to keep in mind:

If your South Korean tourist visa has been denied, you might be wondering why your visa application was rejected. Here are some common reasons:

  • You may not meet the requirements for the type of visa you applied for.
  • Your application may have incorrect or missing information.
  • The documents you submitted might not meet the visa requirements.
  • There could be safety or security concerns about your visa application.
  • Health concerns if you’re carrying an infectious disease.

To avoid having your tourist visa denied, be careful when filling out the application form. Make sure all the information matches your passport exactly.

Remember, even if your visa is approved, it doesn’t guarantee entry into South Korea. The final decision is made by border officials.

Extending Your Stay or Changing Your South Korean Visa Status

Should you wish to stay in South Korea beyond the expiration date of your visa, you have the option to apply for a visa extension at the Immigration Office in South Korea.

To do this, ensure you apply for the South Korea visa extension at least four months before your current visa’s expiration. You will need to submit the following documents for a visa extension:

  • Your passport
  • The completed application form for permission of extension of stay (available for download online)
  • Payment of the processing fee
  • Your Foreign Registration Card (if you are extending a long-term visa)
  • Any additional documents are required based on the specific visa category and your circumstances.

By following these guidelines, you can navigate the waiting period and the potential outcomes of your South Korea visa application with clarity and preparation.

South Korea is an incredible destination waiting for you to explore, with its unique blend of tradition, modernity, stunning landscapes, and warm hospitality. As you embark on your South Korean adventure, you might initially find the visa application process daunting, but don’t worry; it’s simpler than it seems.

SOUTH KOREA VISA APPLICATION FORM

SOUTH KOREA VISA APPLICATION FORM

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

We’ve been receiving a lot of messages asking us for a copy of the South Korean Visa application form. Looks like the visa pages of the website of the South Korean Embassy in Manila have been down for a couple of weeks now. Either that or they moved to another website, the address of which is still unknown to us.

Anyway, yep, fortunately, we were able to save a copy of the form.

Update: They released a new form in October 2020.

Yana~

I saw that the Korean embassy has an additional requirement for employed applicants starting this March 26. I was wondering if this 1604 CF and company alphalist are just the same? Or is it completely different like I need to bring my company’s 1604 CF and my company’s alphalist? (Since the embassy stated to highlight my name.)

Hoping for your quick answer. Thanks.

Jo Malihan

My family is applying for a korean visa. I am employed and so is my husband. And since we both have a gold bpi credit card we plan on not submitting itr and bank docs. However we are bringing our kid (student) – do we need to submit itr and bank docs? Since it is stated in the requirements for student applying for a korean visa.

Hi Mitch, I’m not that familiar with the process pag may card involved. Better contact the travel agency where you plan to lodge your application to be sure. Here’s the list of designated agencies: https://www.thepoortraveler.net/2018/05/korean-visa-travel-agencies/

Dear Sir and/or Ma’am or to whom this may concern:

I will be applying for a Korean visa anytime soon, so I have already downloaded the form. However, upon browsing through it, I noticed that Item 5 calls for the marital status details. I admit I am still married; but can I dispense with the name of the father of my children due to the following reasons, to wit:

1. I have been a single parent for 22 years; 2. I am not privy to the whereabouts of my husband for that 22 long years; 3. I raised and educated my children without receiving any support from their father; 4. I and my children lived our life for these 22 long years working hard to earn our living and be successful in our respective careers.

Will it be okey for me not to answer this item? Pleas comment.

Hi Lumz, no idea. :( It would be best to contact a designated travel agency so you can have a more definitive answer.

Visa Waiver Program

Travel Without a Visa

Citizens of Canada and Bermuda

The Visa Waiver Program  (VWP) enables most citizens or nationals of participating countries *  to travel to the United States for tourism or business for stays of 90 days or less without obtaining a visa. Travelers must have a valid  Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA)  approval prior to travel and meet all requirements explained below. If you prefer to have a visa in your passport, you may still apply for a visitor (B) visa.

Visa Waiver Program Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention Act of 2015

Under the Visa Waiver Program Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention Act of 2015, travelers in the following categories must obtain a visa prior to traveling to the United States as they are no longer eligible to travel under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP):

  • Nationals of VWP countries who have traveled to or been present in Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, or Yemen on or after March 1, 2011 (with limited exceptions for travel for diplomatic or military purposes in the service of a VWP country).
  • Nationals of VWP countries who have traveled to or been present in Cuba on or after January 12, 2021 (with limited exceptions for travel for diplomatic or military purposes in the service of a VWP country).
  • Nationals of VWP countries who are also nationals of Cuba, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, or Syria.

Requirements for Using the Visa Waiver Program (VWP)

You must meet  all  the following requirements to travel to the United States on the VWP:

Travel Purpose Must be Permitted on a Visitor (B) Visa

The following are examples of activities permitted while in the United States on the VWP. In addition, transiting through the United States to other countries is generally permitted for VWP travelers.

  • consult with business associates
  • attend a scientific, educational, professional, or business convention or conference
  • attend short-term training (you may not be paid by any source in the United States with the exception of expenses incidental to your stay)
  • negotiate a contract

  • vacation (holiday)
  • visit with friends or relatives
  • medical treatment
  • participation in social events hosted by fraternal, social, or service organizations
  • participation by amateurs in musical, sports, or similar events or contests, if not being paid for participating
  • enrollment in a short recreational course of study, not for credit toward a degree (for example, a two-day cooking class while on vacation)

Learn more about  Visitor Visas - Business and Pleasure  (PDF - 510 KB).

Travel Purposes Not Permitted on Visa Waiver Program – Examples:

  • study, for credit
  • work as foreign press, radio, film, journalists, or other information media
  • permanent residence in the United States

Must Be a Citizen or National of a VWP Designated Country *

You must be a citizen or national of the following countries *  to be eligible to travel to the United States under the VWP.

  • Czech Republic
  • Liechtenstein
  • Netherlands
  • New Zealand
  • South Korea
  • Switzerland
  • United Kingdom**

**To be eligible to travel under the VWP, British citizens must have the unrestricted right of permanent abode in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man.

Each Traveler Must Have a Valid ESTA

In order to travel without a visa on the VWP, you must have valid Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) approval prior to boarding a U.S. bound air or sea carrier. ESTA is a web-based system operated by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to determine eligibility to travel to the United States for tourism or business under the VWP. Visit the  ESTA webpage  on the CBP website for more information.

Updating Your ESTA

In most cases, your ESTA will be valid for two years.  You also must obtain a new ESTA if you: (1) receive a new passport, including an emergency or temporary passport; (2) change your name; (3) change your gender; (4) change your country of citizenship; or (5) need to change your responses to any of the “yes” or “no” questions on the ESTA application.

These individuals can apply for visas using regular appointment processes at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Consular sections overseas may be able to expedite your interview date if there is an urgent, unforseen situation such as a funeral, medical emergency, or school start date. For more information, please visit the website of the Embassy or Consulate Visa Section where you will interview.

If an individual who is exempt from the Act because of his or her diplomatic or military presence in one of the seven countries is denied ESTA, he or she may go to the  CBP website , or contact the  CBP information Center . The traveler may also apply for a nonimmigrant visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection strongly recommends that any traveler to the United States check his or her  ESTA status  prior to making any travel reservations or travelling to the United States. More information is available on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) website .

Have the Correct Type of Passport

You must have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after your planned departure from the United States (unless exempted by  country-specific agreements ). For families, each member of your family, including infants and children, must have a passport.

Sample Passport Image

In addition, you must have an e-passport to use the VWP. An e-passport is an enhanced secure passport with an embedded electronic chip. The chip can be scanned to match the identity of the traveler to the passport. E-Passports must be in compliance with standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). You can readily identify an e-passport, by a symbol on the cover. See the example below. More information about e-passports is available on the DHS website .

Passport with e-symbol

Emergency and Temporary Passports

If you use an   emergency or temporary passport to enter the United States on the VWP, the passport must be an e-passport. This includes VWP travelers who are transiting the United States.

More information on frequently asked questions about VWP can be found at the following websites:

  • DHS Visa Waiver Program Requirements
  • CBP Visa Waiver Program

May I apply for a visa instead of using the VWP?

Yes, you may apply for a visitor (B) visa if you prefer to do so or if you are not eligible for VWP travel. Additionally, you need to apply for a visa if you will be traveling on a private aircraft or other non-VWP approved air or sea carrier. Review the  approved carriers list . Also, if you intend to stay longer than 90 days, then you need to apply for a visa.

I was denied a visa under section 214(b). May I use the VWP?

A recent visa refusal for any reason could result in denial of ESTA authorization, additional review at the port of entry, or denial of admission to the United States. If you are uncertain if you qualify for VWP travel, you may apply for a visa.

Trips to Canada, Mexico, or nearby islands

If you are admitted to the United States under the VWP, you may take a short trip to Canada, Mexico, or a nearby island and generally be readmitted to the United States under the VWP for the remainder of the original 90 days granted upon your initial arrival in the United States. Therefore, the length of time of your total stay, including the short trip, must be 90 days or less. See the  CBP website . Citizens of VWP countries *  who reside in Mexico, Canada, or a nearby island are generally exempted from the requirement to show onward travel to another country *  when entering the United States. Learn more on the  CBP website .

How can a country* join the VWP?

A country *  must meet various requirements to be considered for designation in the Visa Waiver Program. Requirements include, but are not limited to:

  • enhanced law enforcement and security-related data sharing with the United States;
  • issuing e-passports;
  • having a visitor (B) visa refusal rate of less than three percent (for initial designation);
  • timely reporting of both blank and issued lost and stolen passports; and
  • maintenance of high counterterrorism, law enforcement, border control, and document security standards.

Designation as a VWP country *  is at the discretion of the U.S. government. Meeting the objective requirements of the VWP does not guarantee a country *  will receive VWP designation.

Entering the United States

An approved ESTA allows you to travel to a U.S. port-of-entry (generally an airport) and request permission to enter the United States, but an approved ESTA does not guarantee entry into the United States. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials at the port-of-entry have authority to permit or deny admission to the United States. Learn more on the  CBP website .

Extending your stay

If you enter the United States under the Visa Waiver Program, you are not permitted to extend your stay in the United States beyond the initial admission period. You must depart the United States on or before the date on your admission stamp when you entered the United States. See Extend Your Stay on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website .

Change of status

If you enter the United States under the Visa Waiver Program, you are not permitted to change status in the United States. See  Change My Nonimmigrant Status  on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website.

What if I am traveling to Guam or the Northern Mariana Islands?

Citizens of Australia, Brunei, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Nauru, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and the United Kingdom do not need a visa or ESTA to visit both Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands because of the Guam-CNMI Visa Waiver Program, though they must complete Form I-736 prior to travel.  People's Republic of China Passport holders also do not need a visa if they complete Form I-736 for temporary admission into the Northern Mariana Islands. For more information on the Guam-CNMI Visa Waiver Program,  click here

* With respect to all references to “country” or “countries” on this page, it should be noted that the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, Pub. L. No. 96-8, Section 4(b)(1), provides that “[w]henever the laws of the United States refer or relate to foreign countries, nations, states, governments, or similar entities, such terms shall include and such laws shall apply with respect to Taiwan.” 22 U.S.C. § 3303(b)(1). Accordingly, all references to “country” or “countries” in the Visa Waiver Program authorizing legislation, Section 217 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, 8 U.S.C. 1187, are read to include Taiwan. This is consistent with the United States’ one-China policy, under which the United States has maintained unofficial relations with Taiwan since 1979.
