Vancouver to Penticton Road Trip: 12+ Awesome Places to Stop and Map

Considering a road trip from Vancouver to Penticton? A great choice! This road trip promises a blend of contrasting scenic landscapes, characterful small towns, hiking opportunities and more.

The final destination is exciting too; an approachable city set between two lakes surrounded by sandy beaches, vineyards and mountains.

Living in Penticton, we make the journey between Vancouver and the Okanagan Valley at least four or five times a year. Needless to say, we are very familiar with this road trip.

In this post, I’ll share the best places to stop when driving from Vancouver to Penticton. I’ve covered both major routes – Highway 3 and Highway 5 – and also included an overview of our top picks for Penticton activities (and accommodation) as well.

Whether you’re visiting Penticton for a weekend or passing through on a longer road trip, I hope this post helps you plan the best journey possible!

Vancouver to Penticton road trip overview

Before delving into the top places to explore on a Vancouver and Penticton road trip, let’s take a look at a route overview.

The drive from Vancouver to Penticton is around 400km and takes at least 4 hours and 30 minutes.

Leaving Vancouver, Highway 1 is the fastest way to travel east.

When approaching Hope (120km from Vancouver), drivers need to choose between Highway 3 and Highway 5 .

Regardless of the route chosen, plan for your Vancouver to Penticton road trip to take approximately 6 to 7 hours, factoring in a few sightseeing stops and washroom breaks.

Referred to by Penticton locals as the ‘Manning route,’ Highway 3 travels through E.C. Manning Provincial Park. Surrounded by mountains, forest and grasslands, it is a remarkably scenic road.

Except for a few long flat sections, most of the drive is pretty winding, with a significant amount of elevation gain and loss. For the most part, the highway is two lane only with one lane in either direction. There are some passing sections.

There are very few communities along the journey, with Princeton being the most popular destination for gas and food.

Highway 3 splits in Keremeos, with the 3A route travelling northeast. It intersects Highway 97 near Skaha Lake, which leads north to Penticton.

The Hope to Merritt section of Highway 5 is known as the Coquihalla (or ‘the Coq,’ pronounced like ‘coke’).

With an annual snowfall of 11 metres, the Coquihalla has the reputation for being one of the most treacherous winter driving routes in all of North America (it is even the subject of a long running TV show !) The highest point on the Coq is 1244m.

Upon reaching Merritt, drivers on Highway 5 must then switch to Highway 97C , also known as the Okanagan Connector. This highway is the second highest in British Columbia (1728m). The 97C ends at a junction with Highway 97 , which extends southwards Penticton.

Merritt is the main gas and food stop on the Highway 5 route. Peachland is another good place to get supplies, though it is pretty close to Penticton.

Highway 3 vs Highway 5

A quick time/distance comparison of the two Vancouver to Penticton driving routes would be:

  • Highway 3 – 400km, around 4 hours 50 minutes
  • Highway 5 – 420km, around 4 hours 30 minutes

Despite being longer, the Coquihalla route (Highway 5) is faster due to higher speed limits and double/triple lanes throughout. Highway 3 features sharp turns and most of the road is two-lane only (one lane in either direction).

If you dislike twisty roads and prefer driving on a wide highway, I would say that Highway 5 is probably the better option.

We alternate between these two routes often, depending on our schedule and the type of vehicle we’re driving. We find that we use more gas driving the Coquihalla, which can prove to be expensive.

The Coquihalla is also busier, especially with commercial truck traffic. That in combination with the highway being more vulnerable to bad weather, we usually avoid driving the Coquihalla in winter.

The Manning Park route (Highway 3) is slower but also quieter. I think the scenery is better, but that is quite subjective. We know people who think the Coquihalla is more impressive.

When considering the best things to do between Vancouver and Penticton, I think the Manning Park route has a better choice of activities.

If you’re returning to Vancouver, I would recommend driving one route there and the other route on the way back. Choose Highway 3 for the day you have more time to make stops.

Vancouver to Penticton road trip via Highway 3: The best places to stop

Time to start your road trip from Vancouver to Penticton! Grab your keys, pack essentials, fuel up, and set the GPS. Adventure awaits!

Vancouver to Hope

Leaving Vancouver, enjoy the views of the Cascade Mountains ahead on Highway 1. Mount Baker (3,288m) looms above.

Depending on your gas level, you might consider refuelling in Chilliwack. While Abbotsford typically offers the lowest gas prices in the Lower Mainland, we’ve found that gas stations in Chilliwack are often quicker and more convenient to access.

My first recommended stop is Bridal Veil Falls just west of Hope. This impressive 122m waterfall is located just off Highway 1. The short but steep uphill trail to the base of the impressive falls takes around 10-15 minutes to hike. Return the same way or take the loop path along the river.

Craving caffeine, snacks, or a meal? Explore the modern yet inviting ambience of Blue Moose Coffee House in Hope. Fun fact – Rambo was filmed in this small town surrounded by mountains.

Check your gas tank before leaving Hope. There is only one gas station between Hope and Princeton. There is also very little phone signal between these two towns.

Tall Bridal Veil Falls cascading down rock above, peek through view in forest

Hope to Princeton

Roughly 15 minutes past Hope, the highway leads into E.C. Manning Provincial Park.

At the park’s western entrance, find a picnic area with outhouses alongside a large marmot statue. An alternative picnic spot would be Lightning Lake (further 47km, 10 minute detour).

Highway 3 traverses Manning Park for 60 kilometres. The route predominantly consists of two lanes (totalling four lanes), with occasional narrow, winding sections.

Driving between Vancouver and Penticton during the summer months? Drive up the paved 7.8km long Blackwall Road to the Cascade Lookout and enjoy the breathtaking valley and mountain vistas.

If you have more time (and your own vehicle, not a rental), I’d recommend continuing another 6km along the unpaved section of Blackwall Road to the alpine meadows . A carpet of vibrant wildflowers blooms here in late July and early August.

There is a wide range of fantastic hiking trails in Manning Park. If you need to stay overnight while driving between Vancouver and Penticton, Manning Park would be my top pick.

After Manning Park, the landscape undergoes a noticeable transition, becoming considerably drier with sparser trees. Ahead lie some of the highway’s sharpest turns and highest hills. Slow down and take those corners carefully.

Stone and wooden Manning Park entrance sign with large marmot featured above name. Forested mountains in background

Princeton to Penticton

Princeton serves as an excellent spot for refuelling or meal breaks. Enjoy reliable pub-style favourites at The Copper Pit . The modern Visitor Center has a friendly team of staff and excellent washroom facilities.

East of Princeton, Highway 3 closely follows the Similkameen River. A popular place for a swim is Bromley Rock Provincial Park . Some caution is required as the currents can be strong when the river is high in late spring and early summer.

There is a rest area 5km before Keremeos. This is a good spot to try and catch sight of the bighorn sheep on the surrounding mountains.

Keremeos is the fruit stand capital of British Columbia. The produce is consistently fresh and reasonably priced. While Peach King Orchards is our favourite stand, you can’t make a wrong choice here. Depending on the season, stock up on cherries, peaches, apricots, plums, apples and pumpkins.

After Keremeos, Penticton-bound travellers should turn onto Highway 3A. This section of the journey is mostly flat, with a winding section near the end before the Highway 97 intersection. Head north and enjoy your first views of Penticton and Skaha Lake.

My last suggestion is to stop briefly at the Highway 97 viewpoint . It offers great views of the lake as well as Skaha Bluffs Provincial Park.

Huge display of many different coloured pumpkins at Peach King stand in Keremeos, with dry hills behind

Vancouver to Penticton road trip via Highway 5: Where to stop

The first part of this journey is the same as the above Highway 3 road trip. After Hope, follow the signs to Highway 5. Be aware that there are no gas stations between Hope and Merritt, so it’s advisable to check your fuel level before departing.

Hope to Merritt

The start of Highway 5 stays close to the Coquihalla River, with glimpses of the rushing water visible to drivers. The road climbs continuously, with three-lane sections to help with overtaking large vehicles. There several long tunnels.

The best rest area is located at Britton Creek , 58km (40 minutes) from Hope. There are views of the surrounding forest and mountains.

Past the Coquihalla Summit Recreation Area , the foliage starts to change. The landscape is still mostly forest but it is noticeably drier. The highway straightens out and the Coldwater River parallels the road.

The small town of Merritt is located just a few kilometres away from the junction of Highway 5 and Highway 97C. Nestled in serene rolling grasslands, Merritt serves as a gateway to British Columbia’s expansive interior region.

Should you need food or gas, make a stop in Merritt. There are very few services for the next 105km.

Our top pick in Merritt is the Kekuli Café , a locally owned Indigenous cuisine restaurant. Tuck into the fresh yet filling Wild Salmon Taco bowl and pick up some homemade Saskatoon bannocks for the road.

Back view of hiker sat on wooden bench in front of scenic valley view in Merritt

Merritt to Peachland

Looking to search your legs around Merritt? Check out the 1.9km Godey Creek Trail , situated close to the old Visitor Center at the 97C junction. There is some development in the area and the trailhead has apparently been moved past the second cattlegrid.

Another good option is the Laurie Guichon Memorial Grasslands Interpretive Site located close to the start of Highway 97C. There is an easy 750m long trail to a viewing platform over a pond. Washrooms are available in the parking area.

Ranked as BC’s second-highest highway, light snow is possible on the 97C even in May and October (we’ve seen it!) The journey includes a very long climb up to Pennask Summit , with a slow descent on the other side. There is a gas station at Elkhart.

The Inspiration Centre rest area offers your first view of the Okanagan Valley. At the end of the highway, head south on Highway 97.

Looking towards wooden platform on small pond, with interpretive signage

Peachland to Penticton

Picturesque Highway 97 follows the western shore of Okanagan Lake. The road can be very busy during the summer months, so prepare for a slower journey than you may expect. At the time of writing, there is significant construction between Peachland and Summerland .

If you have time for one final stop before arriving in Penticton, make the short detour to Hardy Falls . The 1.6km return walk through the canyon to the waterfall is completely flat. Salmon can be spotted in the river in September.

Another great place to visit along this section of Highway 97 is Sun-Oka Beach Park . The 500m long sandy beach is one of the best in the entire Okanagan Valley . There is a separate dog beach, so perhaps make this stop a priority if you have a furry friend with you.

Looking across golden sand beach, with two wooden picnic tables near camera. There is a metal fire pit inbetween the two picnic tables. The lake is very calm in the background and forested hills can be seen

Where to stay in Penticton

Our top choice The Lakeside Resort In terms of location, it doesn’t get any better than this – the hotel sits right on the shores of Okanagan Lake, surrounded by municipal parks. Downtown Penticton is less than five minutes walk away.

Good value option

Tiki Shores This motel is just one of a collection that lines the western end of Lakeshore Drive, just across the road from Okanagan Lake. There is a heated outdoor pool, BBQ area and on-site Asian fusion restaurant.

Quieter choice

Days Inn by Wyndham This chain hotel provides comfortable accommodation in an advantageous location – less than 10 minutes away from Okanagan Lake, 2 minutes from the start of the River Channel Float

More great options (including campgrounds and vacation rentals) can be found in this dedicated Penticton accommodation post .

Okanagan Valley Road Trip: What to Do and Where to Stop

The Okanagan Valley is hard to beat for a summer road trip. The views are epic, distances are short (it’s only 170km from Osoyoos to Vernon), the local produce plentiful, the weather wonderfully warm.

Plus, there’s a lake everywhere you look. There’s definitely no shortage of things to do in the Okanagan Valley!

Vineyards sloping towards Okanagan Lake, Naramata Bench

With surroundings as beautiful as this, you can’t really go wrong whatever you do on an Okanagan Valley road trip.

With this in mind, here are our favourite things to do in the Okanagan Valley on a road trip. We’ve lived in Penticton for 7+ years now so we’ve explored this area pretty extensively.

Elevated viewpoint looking down on lake surrounded by vineyards in Osoyoos

If you were to base your Okanagan Valley road trip itinerary entirely on the places mentioned in this post, you should allow 5-7 days.

Those short of time should consider staying in one community and then day tripping to the other regions. Penticton is a good choice for a base as it is pretty central and the highway access is good.

Visiting from Vancouver? Be sure to check out our Vancouver to Okanagan Valley road trip guide after this!

The Okanagan Valley is located on the traditional territory of the Syilx Okanagan and Nlaka’pamux Nations.

Osoyoos

The town of Osoyoos is the perfect introduction to the Okanagan Valley. Hot, dry and yet also wildly abundant with local produce, this is the Canada that overseas visitors never imagine.

Osoyoos is the most southern destination in the Okanagan Valley, located just on the border with the USA.

Panoramic views of the town of Osoyoos and Osoyoos lake from Anarchist Mountain, Osoyoos

Top things to do in Osoyoos, Okanagan Valley:

  • Take a swim!  The warm waters of Osoyoos Lake are enticing, no matter whether you like swimming, floating, sunbathing, paddling or boating.
  • Lake Khiluk / Spotted Lake  is an unusual natural formation just off Highway 3A. Dozens of small mineral rich coloured pools remain after the lake water evaporates in summer
  • Anarchist Mountain  is accessed via a steep, winding section of the highway but offers the best panoramas in town. If you want to get even higher, drive up the dirt road to Mount Kobau
  • The Desert Centre is a great place to start if you want to learn more about the unique ecology of the Osoyoos area. Walk the 1.5km elevated interpretive boardwalk for a better view
  • sẁiẁs Provincial Park (Haynes Point) is a peninsula jutting out into warm Osoyoos Lak. There is a boardwalk, great swimming and a very popular campground

The patchwork of tiny lakes that make up Spotted Lake

Looking to book a stay in Osoyoos?

Watermark Beach Resort – Our top pick. Located right beside Osoyoos Lake, this upscale hotel is also only 5 minutes walk from a choice of restaurants and shops.

Spirit Ridge – Spectacularly situated above vineyards and Osoyoos Lake. There is a heated outdoor pool, hot tub and highly rated restaurant.

Lakeview Motel and Suites – Highly rated option offering excellent value for money. Just a short walk from the beach.

Oliver and Okanagan Falls

Fiercely hot in summer, the wine region around Osoyoos and Oliver produces the best red wines the Okanagan Valley (perhaps in all of Canada!) has to offer.

Fruit is also plentiful here, be sure to stop at one of the many fruit stands along Highway 97.

Fun things to do in Oliver and Okanagan Falls, Okanagan Valley

  • Meander between the many wineries found on this parallel drive but don’t miss Platinum Bench Estate Winery ; wine tastings here are offered with samples of home made bread and cheese.
  • Burrowing Owl Estate is worth a stop just for a peek at the beautiful winery grounds . The wine range is pretty great too!
  • If you’re pushed for time, consider a stop at the new District Wine Village . There are 13 wineries plus a brewery and a distillery in one location
  • Those feeling more active should try one of the hikes in the White Lake Grasslands area (though be sure to start early in summer). My favourite is the 7km Guy’s Cache Loop Trail
  • Vaseux Lake  i s a picturesque  stop for a picnic, paddle or swim. There is a bird observatory, accessible via a short boardwalk, at the northern end of the lake
  • Take a tour of the Dominion Radio Observatory and learn a thing or two about the skies above the Okanagan Valley
  • Just above the community of Okanagan Falls, the Peach Cliff hike is short, interesting and rewarding. The epic views stretch from Penticton to Vaseux Lake

Looking to book a stay in Oliver or Okanagan Falls?

Coast Oliver Hotel – Newly built chain hotel, within walking distance of everywhere in downtown Oliver.

Holiday Beach Resort Motel – Great value option in Okanagan Falls, just a stone’s throw from the beach.

I may be more than a little biased, but Penticton is the perfect place to act as a base for your Okanagan road trip. Yes, Kelowna is bigger, but Penticton has great accessibility, small town charm and two spectacular lakes to enjoy!

Best things to do in Penticton

  • Fruit, vegetables, coffee, street food, crafts and more – the Saturday morning  Penticton Farmers’ Market is an essential summer stop when visiting the Okanagan Valley
  • Join the Kettle Valley Rail trail at Vancouver Hill and take in the beautiful panoramic views of Okanagan Lake and Penticton. Click for more recommended Penticton hiking trails
  • Go wine touring on the Naramata Bench , BC’s most spectacular wine region with 40+ boutique on one 20km stretch of road. The wineries are so close, you can even go for a walking wine tour
  • The perfect compliment to your new wine purchases (above), pick up some locally made cheese at Popular Grove Cheese or Upper Bench Winery , both located on the Naramata Bench
  • Floating the Channel is an absolute must do in Penticton in summer! It’s also a completely free activity if you have your own tube. Rentals are available if you don’t
  • Just south of town, Skaha Bluffs Provincial Park offers hundreds of world class climbing routes plus challenging hiking trails
  • With seven at the last count, Penticton has the most craft breweries per capita in British Columbia. Tour one, tour them all
  • And of course, with Penticton being one of the few towns in the world located between two lakes, there are plenty of wonderful local beaches for swimming, chilling and paddling.

Summerland and Peachland

Summerland and Peachland are two small communities located on the western edge of Okanagan Lake.

There is a surprising amount to do in the local area and both towns offer a quieter base for vacations in the Okanagan Valley.

Elevated view looking down on vineyard and fields from Giant's head Summit in Summerland, with Okanagan Lake in background

Fun things to do in Summerland and Peachland, Okanagan Valley

  • Summerland should definitely be your top destination if you like cider. There are no less than four local craft cider companies with tasting rooms here. My top pick is Millionaires’ Row
  • Of course, Summerland is host to plenty of wineries too! I love the sparkling wines at 8th Generation Vineyard . For lunch with a view, check out Dirty Laundry Vineyard
  • Stretch your legs on Giant’s Head Mountain . Keep in mind that the hike is breathtaking in more ways than one (…it’s uphill all the way)!
  • The Summerland Ornamental Gardens are educational and also a great picnic stop. Learn on how they use drought resilient plants to keep the garden green and luscious
  • Lying directly opposite from Peachland is tiny Rattlesnake Island , a place with quite a dramatic history. Paddle the short distance over to the island or check out the full history
  • Jump back in time and ride an authentic steam train along the last remaining working section of the Kettle Valley Railway
  • On the way north, be sure to make a quick stop at Hardy Falls . A completely flat path leads through the canyon a beautiful cascading waterfall. There are salmon in the river in September
  • The best ‘bang for buck’ hike in Peachland is Pincushion Mountain . The trailhead is very close to Highway 97 and the summit is 4km return with 245m elevation gain. The lake views are simply spectacular

The best things to do in Kelowna, Okanagan Valley

  • Located immediately north of downtown, Knox Mountain Park offers great views, a choice of hiking trails and a disc golf course. Head up the Apex Trail if you’re looking for a challenge, otherwise try the more mellow Paul’s Tomb Trail . Be sure to start early in summer
  • Kelowna’s brewery scene is hopping, with more than 20 in and around the city limits. Many are downtown, so you can put together a DIY beer crawl
  • The city is also a hot spot for wine and cider. Check out East Kelowna Cider Co , run by one of Kelowna’s oldest farming families
  • Want great views but don’t have the time or energy to hike? Head up to Dilworth Mountain for beautiful vistas of downtown. If views aren’t your goal, take an easy stroll along Mission Creek (multiple trailheads)

  • It almost goes without saying, but Kal Beach is a fabulous place to go hang out, paddle and swim during the warm months
  • Just to the west of downtown, Honeymoon Meadery breaks the local winery trend and produces hand crafted honey wine. Click to discover more about Vernon’s Tasting Trail
  • Middleton Mountain is just a short drive from downtown Vernon and is the perfect place for a scenic hike in the Northern Okanagan. The 360 degree views are spectacular. Be sure to go early!
  • Heading north from Vernon, Starlight Drive-In is one of ne of British Columbia’s three last remaining drive in movie theatres. A double feature (two films) is offered as standard
  • If you have the time and energy, I’d highly recommend the 7km one-way hike up Enderby Cliffs in the same area. The reward is spectacular, sweeping views of a patchwork of farmland as well as mountains, rivers and lakes
  • Located in Sicamous, a trip to Dutchmen Dairy for a locally made, hand made ice cream is the perfect way to finish any Okanagan Valley road trip.

Fabulous blog! We're planning a trip to the Okanagan in early September - postponed from last year as we couldn't get in. Looking at your blog is energizing us! We're pulling a 16' Airstream so we're interested in camping options. Thinking about 3-4 days in 2 different places. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Wonderful to hear that you are planning a trip Jeffrey! Have you read our South Okanagan campgrounds post yet?

Friday 10th of September 2021

Hi, great road trip ideas, thank you. We were planning to do the Okanagan valley now in late September 2021. Difficult to get information. Is it a good idea to go now, is it a good time due to all the forest fires that were/are in the area. Thank you

Sunday 12th of September 2021

While the wildfire risk still remains high, the major wildfires active in the height of the summer are now considered 'being held.' This means that the fire is no longer likely to spread. Smoke conditions are still variable however - this week, the southern Okanagan has been receiving smoke from wildfires in Washington. The two main access routes to the Okanagan (Highway 3 and 97C) are both open and I believe are at lower risk of being closed again, with the wildfires along the Coquihalla and near Manning Park also 'being held' as well.

Make the most of the remaining ski season by planning a road trip to Penticton

Penticton shines as the ultimate B.C. winter vacation spot.

The holidays may be behind us, but Penticton continues to channel the spirit with gifts that keep on giving well after jolly Saint Nick has come and gone.

The unsung hero of the South Okanagan, Penticton offers quick and easy access to a diverse range of adrenaline-pumping activities, including cross-country and downhill skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, mountain biking or fat-biking, hiking, walking, and skating, to name a few.

Whether you’re on the lookout for a relaxing retreat or searching for the ideal mix of action and leisure, Penticton offers the perfect setting for any occasion.

With this in mind, here are just a few reasons why Penticton should rise to the top of your travel list for a winter vacation.

The great outdoors

visit-penticton-cross-country

One of Penticton’s greatest claims to fame is its ideal setting for a wide range of year-round outdoor activities . Still, it truly shines as the ultimate B.C. winter vacation spot.

Whether you’re hitting the slopes, embarking on an epic winter biking journey, or slowing down with a leisurely snowshoe, there are venues for all these and more for every preference and skill level.

An example of a perfect place to enjoy some precious powder just west of Penticton is Apex Mountain Resort , home to ideal conditions to ski, snowboard, and partake in snow-fuelled fun, topped with short lift lines and wait times and access to a tube park, hockey, night skiing, lessons and rentals, and even a one kilometre scenic skating loop through the forest.  And just 10 minutes from Apex Resort, is Nickel Plate Nordic Centre , which offers many wonderful winter activities, including cross-country skiing, k9 snowshoe trails, rentals and lessons, and one of the longest ski seasons in Canada, with trails groomed daily.

Feed your adventure

visit-penticton-beer

Winding down after a sensational day spent in the snow will undoubtedly result in an immense thirst and hearty appetite. Luckily, Penticton is home to plenty of food and drink options to curb your cravings.

If you're searching for inspiration, the Daily Special is an excellent place to start, offering local insights into the city’s diverse food and beverage scene. The Daily Special features multiple itineraries to choose from, including the downtown culinary trail, which highlights the city's exciting arts and culture stops mixed with fresh, delicious food and drinks.  Penticton is also conveniently located by over 80 nearby wineries , as well as cideries, and craft distilleries , with the city itself containing eight local craft breweries along the Penticton Ale Trail, earning it the prestigious title of Canada's Craft Beer Capital from Lonely Planet, leaving no shortage of spots to wet your whistle. Just a few of the breweries to visit include Barley Mill Brew Pub , great for the whole family, or Neighbourhood Brewing and Highway 97 Brewing , where you can even bring your furry family members.

Shop to stay warm

travel-penticton-gallery

After you’ve satisfied your appetite, it’s time for some good old-fashioned retail therapy to soothe the soul. Penticton offers an ideal balance of high-end stores and adorable local boutiques.  Be sure to take a walk downtown, along colourful Front Street and the historic Main Street, to discover delightful shops, galleries and outdoor patios. Downtown you’ll find retailers supplying curated collections of handmade and artisanal items from local and international artists, great for finding your new favourite feature piece or the perfect gift for loved ones.

Set out sustainably

One of the best features of Penticton yet to be mentioned is just how easy it is to get there.

Whether embarking on an epic road trip from Vancouver or surrounding areas or flying in from further out, be sure to practice sustainable travel options to positively impact the environment, the local economy, and local culture.

If arriving by car, the city encourages visitors to put it in park when you arrive and spend the rest of their time exploring fuel free, with a particular focus on setting out on foot, pedal, or paddle. This concept is the key to Penticton’s Fuel Free..Almost campaign, encouraging locals and out-of-towners alike to channel personal health and wellness by taking a more active approach to exploring Penticton, enjoying the fresh air and great outdoors while being kind to the environment.

Filled to the brim with exciting possibilities, the true beauty of Penticton is that it offers something for everyone, with an inviting and fun-loving nature that is sure to inspire a return visit once you’ve experienced it for yourself!  To learn more and start planning your next trip, visit visitpenticton.com .

Here I’ll cover the Vancouver to Hope piece. And then, as the next step, I’ll break it down for you into two options: Hwy 5 or Hwy 3.

Westminster Abbey in Mission

If for some reason your road trip to Kelowna is taking you through Mission, please make a stop at Westminster Abbey. This Benedectine Monastery was originally founded in 1939, and now is a beautiful array of religious architecture with stunning views of the Fraser Valley and Mt. Baker. At most times you can enter the main chapel, and even participate in the prayer if you feel like it.

Side-note: Mission, BC is one of the “undiscovered” and underestimated destinations in our opinion. We love going hiking in Mission , for example. And its Hunter Trail can very well compete with the views of Bowen Lookout or St. Mark's summit.

  • Harrison Hot Springs

the summer water park at Harrison Lake near Harrison Hot Springs, BC

To get to the town of Harrison Hot Springs you’ll have to turn from Hwy 1 on your way from Vancouver to Kelowna and take a 20 min driving detour. Harrison Hot Springs is named this way for, well… for its hot springs. In the aftermath of the covid pandemic, however, these hot springs are not available to the public – you can only access the pools when staying at the Harrison Hot Springs Resort and Spa .

Never to despair! This cute little town is still worth a stop on your Okanagan road trip. There are plenty of cool things to do at Harrison Hot Springs! Bridal Veil Falls near Agassiz

Incredible Bridal Veil waterfall is a whopping 122 meters tall, and frankly magnificent all year round. It only takes about 10 min from the parking lot to get to the water, and you can come really-really close to it. Be careful in the winter though, as the rocks around the waterfall are seriously slippery.

Bridal Veil Falls Park is actually quite refreshing on its own. There are plenty of picnic tables next to parking, and it could be a great stop to have your afternoon lunch on a hot summer day.

Town of Hope, BC

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Hope British Columbia (@hopebcca)

Frankly, the Town of Hope is nothing much, just a few dozen houses, gas stations, coffee shops, and fast-food restaurants. Hope is, however, is your last decent stop prior to crossing the mountain ridge into Okanagan.

On our road trips from Vancouver to Kamloops, Kelowna, Penticton, or Alberta , we always stop at Hope to fill up gas, get coffee and snacks, use the bathroom, and ensure we have the road trip music playlist downloaded for the next few hours. In some places along the road across the mountains, there is no internet or cell reception.

Here at Hope, you’ll have to make a decision, whether your Vancouver to Kelowna road trip will take you through Hwy 5 (Northern passage) or Hwy 3 (Southern passage).

Depending on what route you chose, our list of suggested places to stop will look different. No worries, though, as we’ll address both!

Where to Stop When Traveling from Vancouver to Kelowna through Hwy 5 via Merritt

Hwy 5 is the “Northern Passage” from Vancouver to Okanagan. You’ll be driving on a very well-maintained road, which is quite straight and has a good 100+ km/hr speed limit. This is the main road used by trucks too, so we don’t actually like it, preferring a much more picturesque Hwy 3. Yet Hwy 5 is definitely quicker. Let’s see what are the best places to make a sightseeing stop here:

Othello Tunnels near Hope

Othello Tunnels near Hope BC - attractions to see on Vancouver to Kelowna road trip

Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park, near Hope BC, with its magnificent rocky terrain along forceful rapids of Coquihalla River, the majestic wilderness of the Hope-Nicola Valley Trail, is a unique place to explore and offers some of the most epic, yet still kid-friendly hikes in Fraser Valley. Located within the Park, the famous Othello Tunnels, a popular attraction with both locals and tourists alike, if not yet, then definitely should be on your list of places to stop on your road trip from Vancouver to Kelowna.

Othello Tunnels is a network of old abandoned railway tunnels and bridges that are running along the Coquihalla River.

TIP : it is incredibly dark inside the tunnels, so we recommend you take a flashlight with you. The best option is a headlamp which leaves you with free hands, and that has a red light, rather than regular white light. The tunnels’ ceilings are being inhabited by bats: regular light will disturb them, the red one is ok though.

IMPORTANT : In the past few years Othello Tunnels were actually on and off open and closed due to rockfall. Therefore you should check the official Park’s website for the current status before you attempt to stop there.

Falls Lake  (mid-way from Hope to Merritt)

Falls Lake is a cute little lake next to Coquihalla Summit Recreation Area, the hike to the lake is only about 1.5 km out and back trail. It is cute, but nothing special. Yet a good stop on your way to Kelowna (or back to Vancouver) to rest a bit from sitting in a car.

NOTE: it is quite cold here even in the summer. When we stopped here in July 2020, there was still snow in the parking lot.

The beautiful park of Kentucky Alleyne is located only 1.5 hours away from Kelowna and is a perfect rest stop for your entire family on your road trip from Vancouver after crossing the mountains.

Wide-open fields of rolling grassland, sparkling turquoise waters of the Alleyne and Kentucky lakes (yes! There are two lakes here!), and wildlife encounters – you’ll find some spectacular scenery if you make the stop in the summer months. Plenty of opportunities to have a stroll, to have a picnic, and to simply enjoy the views, sounds, and smells of nature.

Where to Stop When Traveling from Vancouver to Kelowna through Hwy 3 via Penticton

So to be honest, Hwy 3 is our favorite route into the Okanagan every time we go on a road trip. It is much narrower, and more wiggling, yet we find the drive more pleasant without having to crawl after trucks.

There is a cool stop you can make at Princeton town, to refuel, have a snack, or buy local fruit and berries in the summer.

We once took Hwy 3 on our way from Penticton to Vancouver, and passed Princeton right at the time a thunderstorm was starting beyond the mountain ridge, while the town was still lit up with the sun. Mind-blowing. If you haven’t yet driven Hwy 3, I recommend you do try it on your next road trip from Vancouver to Okanagan.

E.C. Manning Provincial Park

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ingrid Kilde (@happy_hik_ing)

Named after Ernest C. Manning, Chief Forester of British Columbia from 1936 – 1941, this Provincial Park is a destination of its own. Dozens of hiking trails of all levels, warm Lightning Lake for swimming, a few river beaches, boat rentals, horse riding, a pub, and a restaurant, make Manning Park an awesome place to stop at on your Vancouver to Kelowna road trip.

Manning is also extremely popular in winter for its winter sports, providing a great less crowded alternative destination to Whistler and its winter activities . Its Manning Resort is usually already sold-out in mid-summer!

View this post on Instagram A post shared by British Columbia Magazine (@britishcolumbiamagazine)

The Keremeos area is famous for its naturally occurring basalt columns and is definitely a great unique nature stop on your way to Okanagan if you’d like some cool photos for your Instagram. You’ll have to take a hike through – an 11 km out-and-back trail is rated moderate, hence make sure your entire family has proper hiking shoes, including kids hiking shoes .  Also, here are some tips on how to get your kids to like hiking .

Keremeos is also extremely popular with rock climbers, so don't be surprised to find columns all covered in “spider men”.

  • Skaha Lake at Penticton

Shaka Lake main beach in Penticton, place to stop on summer road trip from Vancouver to Kelowna

Once you enter Okanagan, there is no reason not to stop at Penticton. In fact, our family actually prefers Penticton to Kelowna, as it is less crowded and cozier family-oriented in our opinion. The town’s main beach – Skaha Lake beach – is a great spot to take a swim, and to flex your muscles at volleyball, tennis, or golf.

If you are looking for a snack, Nautical Dog Cafe at Skaha Marina is your best bet! They serve delicious breakfast and snacks and are located just 5 min walking distance off the Skaha Lake main beach.

  • Sun-Oka Beach Park at Trout Creek

Further, on your way from Penticton to Kelowna, there is another cool beach that is dearly loved by our family. Sun-Oka has soft sandy beaches, cool views of the Okanagan Lake, and enough shade that your family can have a lunch picnic break on your road trip.

Kettle Valley Steam Railway at Summerland

Kettle Valley railway outdoor attraction to visit with kids in BC

How about taking your child for a ride on a real steam train? Easy! Just an hour from Kelowna, there is a unique old train attraction that will leave any toddler in absolute awe! Kettle Valley Railway runs its Steam Train twice a day: a 1.5-hour-long ride through the beautiful hills of Summerland. The train rides only twice per day. So you have to time your visit if you want to either ride the train or just come to the station to see it arriving, and take a few photos. In summer 2021, the schedule was: 10:30 am and 1:30 pm departures. If you want to see it arriving back at the station, you’ll have to be there at 11:40 am and 2:40 pm accordingly.

Once you make it into Okanagan, there are many awesome things to do in Kelowna, yet I want to highlight one of our favorite absolutely must-visit locations that you absolutely want to include on your to-do list. You guessed it, that's Kangaroo Creek Farm!

Kangaroo Creek Farm in Kelowna, BC

family taking photos of a resting kangaroo at the Kangaroo Creek Farm in Kelowna

No, you don’t have to travel to Australia anymore to see and pet a real kangaroo! We have a Kangaroo Farm right at our doorsteps here in Kelowna, BC. Regardless of whether you have a child or not, you have to come to see it. Of course, every toddler will be blown away instantly.

Unlike a typical zoo, almost all the animals at the Kangaroo Creek Farm are ravaging the fields cage-free! Kangaroos, wallabies, ostriches, goats, capybaras, ducks, chickens, peacocks, rabbits, and even a large porcupine! Kids can also check out parrots, lizards, snakes, and turtles! Do check it out, I bet you won't ever regret it!
