About Ricky Gervais
Birthplace: Whitley, UK Born: June 25, 1961 Partner: Jane Fallon Children: n/a Official Website: rickygervais.com
Ricky Gervais is a name synonymous with both comedy and controversy. With a career spanning multiple decades, Gervais has established himself as one of the most prominent and successful entertainers of our time. From his groundbreaking work on The Office to his irreverent stand-up specials, Gervais has consistently pushed boundaries and challenged norms, solidifying his reputation as a fearless comedic force. But beyond his impeccable timing and biting wit lies a deeper passion for animal rights and an unwavering commitment to his personal beliefs.
A Multi-Talented Entertainer with Countless Accomplishments
Ricky Gervais is a British comedian who has made a name for himself on both sides of the Atlantic. He is a talented writer, actor, and producer who has won numerous awards for his work in television and film. One of Ricky’s biggest accomplishments is creating the hit TV show “The Office.” The series was a massive success in both the UK and the US and helped to launch Ricky’s career. He has also produced and starred in other successful TV shows, including “Extras” and “Derek.” In addition to his work in television, Ricky has also acted in a number of movies, including “Night at the Museum” and “Ghost Town.”
From Radio Shows to Hollywood Movies:
Ricky Gervais got his start in comedy in the early 1990s when he began performing stand-up in London clubs. He soon found success as a radio host and was eventually offered his own TV show. This led to him teaming up with Steve Merchant to create “The Office,” which would eventually become one of the most successful TV shows of all time. Despite his success, Ricky never forgot his roots and continued to perform stand-up comedy throughout his career.
Crude, Controversial, and Hilarious: Understanding the Comedy Style of Ricky Gervais
Ricky Gervais is known for his irreverent and often controversial style of comedy. He is not afraid to tackle taboo subjects or push boundaries in the name of humor. His comedy often satirizes popular culture and pokes fun at social norms. He is also known for his wit and intelligence, and his ability to turn even the most mundane topics into comedic gold. While some may find his style of comedy offensive, there is no denying that he has a unique perspective and a gift for making people laugh.
Beyond the Laughter: A Look at Ricky Gervais’ Passion for Animal Rights and Personal Life
Despite his public persona as an irreverent and sometimes raunchy comedian, Ricky Gervais is known for his love of animals and his commitment to animal welfare. He has been a vocal advocate for animal rights and has used his platform to raise awareness about animal cruelty. In his personal life, Ricky is married to writer Jane Fallon, whom he has been with since the early 1980s. The couple have no children but are devoted to their pets, including several cats and dogs. Ricky is also a vocal atheist and has been known to use his comedy to criticize organized religion.

Ricky Gervais breaks world record with latest comedy tour
Charlie Herbert
The comedian now has a world record to add to his accolades
Ricky Gervais has bagged himself a world record with one of his stand-up performances on his recent comedy tour.
The comedian, who rose to stardom in the early 2000s for creating The Office and Extras, has spent most of 2023 taking his Armageddon tour across the world.
And one of his shows on the tour now officially holds the Guinness World Record for the highest gross for a single stand-up performance ever.
The stand-up’s show at the Hollywood Bowl in LA on May 6 this year grossed a whopping £1,410,000 ($1,790,206.50).
Along with Emmys, Golden Globes and BAFTAs, Gervais can now add a world record to his collection of accolades thanks to the history-making show in California.
Congratulations to @rickygervais – his Armageddon tour date at Hollywood Bowl in LA has the highest gross for a single stand-up performance 👏 https://t.co/Jg0q3Gtz4Z — Guinness World Records (@GWR) September 4, 2023
Speaking about the record, the British comic said: “As if packing out The Hollywood Bowl wasn’t enough, now Guinness World Records wants to put me in their big book. What a year!”
“Ricky Gervais is Britain’s biggest comedian. He sells out arenas around the world,” said Ian Coburn from Live Nation.
His Armageddon tour will continue throughout the remainder of 2023, including three shows at London’s OVO Wembley Arena (6t October, 20th October, 13th December) and 11 nights at the London Palladium (13-16th and 28-30th September, 11-14th October).
For those who can’t bag a ticket to one of the shows, Netflix has already secured the rights to the tour, so a special will be dropping on the platform once the tour has come to a close.
If you didn't manage to get tickets to see my record-breaking #Armageddon show live, (there were over 18 million ticket requests apparently), don't worry. Netflix have bought it, so you can watch it from the comfort of your home anywhere in the world after I've finished touring. pic.twitter.com/YtoeVvOCbk — Ricky Gervais (@rickygervais) September 13, 2023
When Gervais’ last show, SuperNature, landed on Netflix last year, it became one of the most-watched comedy specials that year.

Ricky Gervais: Comedian, Actor and Multi-Talented Entertainer
- by history tools
- November 19, 2023
As a longtime fan, I‘ve eagerly followed Ricky Gervais‘ career from his humble beginnings all the way to global stardom. He is one of the most influential comedic voices of our time, renowned for his biting wit, uncomfortable humor and controversial opinions. In this piece, I wanted to provide an enthusiastic appreciation of Gervais‘ body of work, while also sharing some personal highlights and insights from his stellar career.
Early Life in England
Born in 1961 in Reading, England, Ricky Gervais originally set out to become a pop star, forming a failed new wave music duo in the early ‘80s called Seona Dancing. Thankfully for comedy fans, that music career never took off! After attending an elite college in London, Gervais pursued a career in radio where he first discovered his talents as a comedian.
Even as an up-and-coming performer, Gervais displayed his signature sharp observational humor and masterful grip on the awkwardness of everyday life. He had a knack for finding the funny in cringe-worthy scenarios and mundane realities. It was a breath of fresh air compared to traditional punchline-driven comedy.
Breakout Success with The Office
Of course, Gervais‘ big break came in 2001 when the BBC aired The Office, which he co-created and starred in as the deluded paper company boss David Brent. I still remember eagerly awaiting each new episode, blown away by the awkwardness and laugh-out-loud jokes.
At the time, the mockumentary format felt groundbreaking. Unlike anything else on TV, The Office perfectly skewered real office culture with an authenticity that came from Gervais‘ own background working dead-end jobs. Looking back, it was a seminal moment in comedy – paving the way for shows like Parks and Recreation and Modern Family.
Beyond the cringeworthy humor, The Office also featured relatable characters. David Brent‘s desperation for respect and misguided attempts at humor made him a deeply human, if flawed, protagonist. Gervais‘ nuanced performance is what elevated the role into an all-time great sitcom character.
Even 20 years later, The Office remains one of the most brilliant and influential British comedies. It opened doors for Gervais and changed mockumentary television forever.
Finding Continued Success
Ricky Gervais was able to replicate the magic of The Office with Extras in 2005, another hysterical mockumentary co-created with Stephen Merchant. Some of my favorite episodes feature celebrity guest stars playing warped versions of themselves, highlighting Gervais‘ talent for satire.
Around this same time, Gervais also embarked on a successful stand-up comedy career. His animated specials like Animals and Politics cemented his reputation as one of the preeminent comedians of the 2000s. I‘ll never forget nearly falling out of my seat laughing at his atheist-themed comedy tour Fame.
Gervais went on to play memorable roles in films like the Night at the Museum franchise and 2021‘s After Life, while continuing stand-up tours and hosting controversial Golden Globes ceremonies. He became renowned for celebrity roasts and skewering Hollywood egos.
Through it all, Gervais never compromised his comedic vision or shy away from touchy subjects. He spoke his mind as an outspoken atheist and animal rights activist. While controversial at times, I always appreciated Gervais‘ boldness and willingness to push boundaries.
Why Gervais Is One of the Greats
Looking back at Ricky Gervais‘ extraordinary career, it‘s clear he merits consideration among the comedy greats of all time:
- As the co-creator of The Office, Gervais pioneered cringe humor and mockumentary sitcoms that paved the way for future shows.
- His stand-up comedy specials broke viewership records and influenced a generation of comedians with their searing cultural satire.
- He racked up awards recognition including multiple Emmys, Golden Globes and Grammys.
- Gervais displayed versatility across TV, film, books, directing and standup.
- He consistently pushed boundaries and shared bold, controversial opinions.
- With razor-sharp wit and insights into human nature, Gervais‘ comedy will stand the test of time.
While his humor is certainly not for everyone, Gervais has undeniably left an indelible mark on comedy. For those like me who appreciate sharp satire and cringe-worthy scenarios, Gervais is one of the greats.
The Future Looks Bright for Gervais
Even in his 60s, Ricky Gervais shows no signs of slowing down. He continues touring sold-out stand-up shows and has plans for future seasons of After Life. I can‘t wait to see what this comedy icon does next and look forward to many more years of laughter. Gervais never fails to provide brilliant observations about life‘s uncomfortable truths in a way that only he can.

Ricky Gervais: Armageddon review – smug, macho, playground bants
Apollo, Manchester There’s ample room in comedy to tease at woke over-earnestness but this weak and boorish set fails to engage
R icky Gervais gives us a little lecture after curtain call tonight about taking offence. Laughter is always good; no one’s getting hurt – that kind of thing. But, not for the first time, it’s a specious argument, setting up various straw men to represent those of us who might demur from his boorish comedy. I’m not suggesting his jokes about “dwarves”, “disabled creatures” and all the age-old targets of abuse will lead directly to hate crimes. I am suggesting they’re operating to a comic standard more associated with the playground than the standup stage.
It’s all a bit sad. Gervais is a clever chap, and a compassionate one, towards animals at least. But he’s convinced himself that anti-woke is a rebellious pose to strike – then convinced himself again that juvenile bants represents the best way to stage that rebellion. And so for punchlines we get African babies with Aids, sweatshop children whose mums get raped, and Gervais’s fictional limbless son being called “you little fucking grub”. If we don’t laugh, we’re “fragile” and “scared of words” – which Gervais paints here as a betrayal of millennia of “survival of the fittest” human evolution.
Cue the ostensible point of Armageddon: to imagine how it all might end for our “one species of narcissistic ape”. Gervais considers that prospect with equanimity: no lover of humanity he. But the theme is secondary to his battery of crude gags about immigrants, homelessness and, ho hum, Chinese people eating dogs. Throw in a few gags about his penis size from the 61-year-old, and the descent from the salad days of The Office is near-complete.
The shame is that there’s ample room in comedy to tease at woke over-earnestness and the contradictions of modern political correctness. With his jokes about the overuse of the word “fascist”, say, or a devious one about so-called cultural appropriation, Gervais shows how good he could be if Armageddon’s spirit were curious and engaged rather than macho and smug. He promises, tongue firmly in cheek, to find a justification for the worst jokes here before taping for Netflix. Might I suggest simply writing better ones?
At Manchester Apollo on 7 December. Then touring until 15 December.

Ricky Gervais: SuperNature
Gervais, who created The Office (among other hit TV shows), has proven as divisive as he has successful in recent years thanks to his bold style of comedy. The award-winning entertainer and producer is considered to be the most influential British comedian since Charlie Chaplin in his home country, where overwhelming demand for his upcoming show has prompted the addition of more tour dates.
He's also known for frequently engaging in high-profile Twitter feuds, and for refusing to apologize for jokes that offend.

Ricky Gervais and Steve Merchant returned to XFM, the alternative London-based radio station in September 2001 after the first series of The Office had been broadcast. Due to the phenomenal success of the show, Ricky was important enough to now be given his own producer, one Karl Pilkington. Although Karl was hired to just "press the buttons", Ricky and Steve got him involved more and more with the show over the subsequent weeks and soon became fascinated with his personal life, unconventional childhood and ridiculous stories. By the end of the first season Karl had become a crucial part of the show's success.
Description
This is the second in a new series of definitive discourses exploring the diversity of human enterprise. As always, Ricky Gervais and Steve Merchant are joined by shaven simian Karl Pilkington. In this episode, NATURAL HISTORY, we explore the awesome beauty inherent in the natural world. Drawing on observations by eminent biologists, from Thomas Huxley to Charles Darwin to Richard Dawkins, Ricky Steve and Karl offer their usual benighted summation. Areas of discussion include: The heuristic potential of flora and fauna; Karl is impressed by a new motoring accessory; Seashores to semiconductors; Gene genius; Monkey thumping; Karl's instinct for extinction; Self-improvement a la Frankenstein; Dodos - a dead delicacy?; Aurally challenged alligators, hedonistic rodents and horse-biting ranidae; Genital aesthetics - Karl talks bollocks.

Ricky Gervais makes history by making £1.41 million for one stand-up show
The famed british comedian took home a hefty paycheck.
Rhiannon Ingle
Ricky Gervais has made history after raking in a whopping £1.41 million for just one stand-up show.
The British comedian, actor, writer, and director has bagged himself a pretty hefty paycheck after hopping across the pond to Los Angeles to perform a gig for his worldwide tour, 'Armageddon'.
The show has since been dubbed the highest-grossing one-off gig ever by a British comedian.
Gervais , who is best known for hit TV shows like The Office, Extras, An Idiot Abroad, Derek and After Life, took to the iconic Hollywood Bowl stage earlier this month (6 May) to perform to his adoring fans.
The 61-year-old has since set an all-time record at the box-office and has been left overwhelmed by the news.
Taking to Twitter , the star thanked his supporters for helping him achieve the monumental milestone.
He tweeted: "A career highlight. I should retire now. Thanks to everyone who bought a ticket."
Speaking of the impressive accolade, he said: "To find out about this record is the icing on the cake. I was happy enough when it didn’t rain."
It seems you can take the man out of Britain but you can't take Britain out of the man.
Tweeting after the LA gig, he wrote: "Thank you Hollywood Bowl for one of the most surreal nights of my life. What a venue. What a crowd."
He continued: "I can’t even imagine what my mum would think about me playing the Hollywood Bowl.
"I hope she would be horrified by the language, tell me I looked fat, and be secretly proud."
In another tweet the comedian added: "Wish I’d filmed it now... if only to remind myself it actually happened."
Reckon the mammoth pay-check will do that for you, mate.
Gervais' post has since attracted an avalanche of fans to offer their words of praise to the comedian following the news.
One Twitter user commented: "You deserve it top man."
A second congratulated: "Comedic gold. Gervais is in a league of his own. Congrats!"
"Good for him," penned a third, "he’s brilliant."
A fourth echoed: "Good. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy."
Trying their luck with the A-lister, a final fan asked: "Lend us a tenner then."
Gervais is next set to hit the UK for the Armageddon tour tomorrow in Leeds (25 May) with the final UK tour date set to commence this winter (12 December) over in Bristol.
