Misfits are an American horror punk and heavy metal band who formed in 1997, and after a decade of hiatus from 1983 – 1995, have now reformed with a slightly revitalised line up of musicians.

The band now consists of Jerry Only on bass guitar and vocals, Dez Cadena playing guitar, and Eric Arce on the drums. Only is the sole remaining band member from the original line up, but the fresh and original playing techniques of the two newer members bring organic and exciting new elements to the trio’s sound. With eight studio albums under their belt, and four movie appearances, Misfits managed to travel into mainstream culture and popular media throughout their careers.

Although the band’s history of legal battles slightly dampens their career after Glenn Danzig filed a law suit against Only, their tours and musical talents are renowned for being exciting and original, and it hasn’t prevented the remainder of the band from continuing to perform. The band are known for their eccentric rock style make up that they sport on stage, and their enthusiastic high energy performances. As well as this, all of their performances use images inspired by horror or science fiction films, adding exciting elements of theatricality to the shows that they put on. Largely considered to be icons of their genre, the band have an eclectic following, from original fans from their early days, right up to young metalcore enthusiasts.

Live reviews

Original horror-punk pioneers The Misfits were THE epitome of the genre when they broke onto the scene back in 1977 when the Ramones were alive and kicking and punk was still an increasingly popular subculture. Misfits have been putting out dark, B-movie inspired records since the release their early-Eighties albums 'Walk Among Us' (1982) and 'Earth A.D./ Wolfsbood' (1983)- both considered cornerstones of the American post-hardcore movement. Founded by the growlingly powerfully-voiced singer/ songwriter Glenn Danzig and bassist Jerry Only, the band has undergone some serious line-up changes in their time, with a rift between the two causing Danzig to quit in 1983 to go on to form other projects. After a long hiatus, Only has brought their unique brand of horror-punk-fun into the new decade, with a string of stadium and fetsival tour dates over the past few years.

As hardcore Misfits fans will know, that their live shows are always a theatrical, spikes 'n leather-laden frightfest, and an exhilaratingly unique experience. Despite having been going close to 40 years, and the possibility that their faces may now be a scarier sight before the skull make-up is applied, they continue to tour frequently- and their original, angst-ridden blend of dramatic murder tale lyrics and frantic guitar riffs, complemented by thunderous drumming, sounds very nearly just the same as when they played their songs the first time around. At any rate, Jerry Only's Misfits in 2014 put on a ghoulishly entertaining show.

New Jersey outfit Misfits can boast to being the pioneers of a genre when they emerged in the early 80s with the self described sound of horror punk. Heavily inspired by horror film themes and imagery, the band successfully worked these nuances into a stage show which quickly gained huge following in their homeland as well as across the pond in the UK. There were few bands creating a sound as extreme as Misfits yet still incorporating a real sense of showmanship.

This consistency is still evident today as Jerry Only and co step out onstage through the ominous spinning lights that are likened to prison towers or helicopters. The tone is very much set for opener 'The Devil's Rain' which threatens to lift the roof off the intimate venue with screeching riffs and deep bass notes that rumble through the room. The crowd naturally erupts in excitement and cheers as the group run through a setlist consisting of all eight studio albums. The horror influence is really evident on a finale of 'Skulls' and 'Die, Die My Darling' as the whole audience lifts their hands in unison and salutes the punk warriors.

Sadly Sound kick mislead on this concert. I was sceptical from the start bases on price and venue but was at least expecting a cover band. None of the band's listed for this were actually present. They were all a bunch of local rappers using the names of large bands. Everyone in my party was highly disappointed but found it comical at the same time.

This is the second time that Song kick has provided misleading information for concerts in my area. At least the first one they had the band's right just couldn't provide an accurate start time. I don't know if I will continue to use this app, if I do I will be doing my own research a little closer to verify all information is provided.

Misfits were awesome hammering out song after song in lightning like rythem played many early songs some from the graves era as well played some devils rain Miss graves and wish he was singing because only doesn't really sing well as a vocalist but he's very crowd friendly fez and Eric arcy walked out through the barricade to greet fans before the show in route to the stage while after the show Jerry only signed and took photos forever a really cool guy and that goes a long way in my book overall 4 of 5 stars

Awesome show!! First time at the Bronson Centre and it's a great venue. The Misfits are legends, and they certainly delivered: close to 2 hours of uninterrupted horror punk mayhem.

They kicked off the night by playing Static Age in full, before jumping into some classics. Then they delivered some Michael Graves era stuff, before ending with tracks off their newest Album.

The show ended with Halloween, which was a fitting end given that Halloween is coming up.

The Misfits show at the forum was incomparable to anything in this world. Their performance was dead on. The set list covered a wide variety with early songs such as She, and Bullet, as well many tunes from Walk Among Us, and Earth AD. Glenn and company seemed to get along well, and the show kept getting better as it progressed. I have listened to The Misfits for over 30 years, and am glad to have had this opportunity.

We all came to listen to great music, and that's exactly what we got. Overall, it was an incredible performance with incredible people and it was definitely not a night to forget.

My friends and I also really appreciated that the members of the band took the time after the concert to give signatures and even meet/talk to every fan who wanted to meet them. We would definitely see them again.

TERRIBLE SOUND QUALITY AT VENUE. parking cost as much as my ticket. Band was pretty good but couldn’t hear it he lyrics at all. Part of it is Glenn’s age, bigger part is the sound system at prudential center. I would never go back to this venue after this experience.

Sorry but it just wasnt up to scratch. The vocals were a bit all over the place especially early on. Jerry Jr on guitar was totally going through the motions and the drums kept drowning it all out. Having said that everyone else seemed to be having a good tome. 2/5.

scottyscott1970’s profile image

I can't see them and have not listened to any post Danzig music since Danzig left. Just not the same. The Misfits had an original sound back in the 70's and 80's that truly shocked people. Totally loved that. Misfits now are just another metal band with a gimmick.

Misfits Announce Three 2023 Shows, Megadeth + AFI Among Opening Acts

Horror punk legends the Misfits have just announced three 2023 shows, featuring different special guests at each stop with Megadeth and AFI being among those tabbed to open.

The number of gigs now on the books equals the total amount of shows the band played across 2021 and 2022, meaning it's another rare chance for fans to catch one of punk's biggest acts of all time.

Since coming back in 2016 as the Original Misfits  (featuring original singer and songwriter Glenn Danzig and original bassist Jerry Only , as well as guitarists Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein and Acey Slade in addition to drummer Dave Lombardo ), the group has only performed 16 times, the first being at Riot Fest in Denver, Colorado.

The new dates are set for June 24 (Megadeth and Fear as support), July 8 ( The Gaslight Anthem and Fear as support) and July 15 (AFI and Fear as support) and you can view more details further down the page.

Members of the Misfits Fiend Club will have the first opportunity to grab tickets through an exclusive pre-sale that runs from March 22 at 10AM ET through March 23 at 10PM ET. The band indicates fans can use the password FIEND   to score early tickets at the corresponding ticket links to each show as listed below.

Look for the general on-sale to being on March 24 at 10AM local time at Live Nation .

About misfits.

Misfits are an American punk rock band often recognized as the progenitors of the horror punk subgenre, blending punk and other musical influences with horror film themes and imagery. Founded in 1977 in Lodi, New Jersey, the original lineup consisted of Glenn Danzig, bassist Jerry Only, and drummer Manny Martínez. Danzig and Only were the only consistent members throughout the next six years, in which they released several EPs and singles, and with Only's brother Doyle as guitarist, the albums Walk Among Us (1982) and Earth A.D./Wolfs Blood (1983), both considered touchstones of the early-1980s hardcore punk movement. Misfits disbanded in 1983 and Danzig went on to form Samhain and then Danzig. Several albums of reissued and previously unreleased material were issued after the group's dissolution, and their music later became influential to punk rock, heavy metal, and alternative rock. After a series of legal battles with Danzig, Only and Doyle regained the rights to record and perform as the Misfits. They formed a new version of the band in 1995 with singer Michale Graves and drummer Dr. Chud. This incarnation of Misfits had a more heavy metal sound, and released the albums American Psycho (1997) and Famous Monsters (1999) before dissolving in 2000. Jerry Only then took over lead vocals and recruited former Black Flag guitarist Dez Cadena and former Ramones drummer Marky Ramone for a Misfits 25th Anniversary tour. This lineup released an album of cover songs titled Project 1950 and toured for several years. In 2005, Ramone was replaced by Robo, who had played with Black Flag in the early 1980s and had also previously been Misfits' drummer from 1982 to 1983. This lineup released a single titled "Land of the Dead" in 2009. The Misfits' lineup of Only, Cadena, and drummer Eric "Chupacabra" Arce released a new album titled The Devil's Rain in October 2011. In 2015 it was announced that Cadena would be taking a break from music after receiving a cancer diagnosis, and was replaced by Only's son Jerry Caiafa II. That same year Soulfly's Marc Rizzo joined the band, also playing guitar, filling in for Cadena before Caiafa would move on to become the sole guitarist for the band. In September 2016, for the first time in 33 years, Danzig, Only and Doyle reunited for two headlining shows at the Riot Fest, along with original Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo and second guitarist Acey Slade.

MISFITS Issue Post-European Tour Update

MISFITS ' official web site has been updated with the following message:

The MISFITS just returned from a brief tour of Europe performing at festivals and more running throughout Italy, Germany, The Netherlands, Barcelona Spain and the U.K. Unfortunately, the band was met with an unexpected and unavoidable obstacle when Robo (the band's drummer) was denied entry into the U.K. once again.

"Many fiends in the U.K. may recall the band was forced to cancel and reschedule a large block of shows at the last minute for this very reason last year. As this specific issue has been a reoccurring problem, the 'FITS refused to disappoint fans with a last-minute cancellation again. Coming through in the clutch on drums was The Goat , who many fiends may already be familiar with as he has played live with the MISFITS many times in the past. Needless to say, the U.K. shows went off without a hitch and everyone had a great time. Thanks to The Goat for coming through for the MISFITS and the fans alike on such incredibly short notice. Fiends in the U.K. can rest assured the MISFITS will not disappoint this September either. Their headlining slot on the upcoming '30 Years of Punk' festival dates will not be cancelled. More details on that and a few other surprises to come.

"In related news, Jerry [ Only , bass] tells us, 'As much as I love touring, playing out every night and giving it all I've got for fiends all over the world, the break we've got between now and the fall couldn't come at a better time. I'm really looking forward to having some solid down time to continue writing new material for the next MISFITS album and spending time with my new baby girl.' Everyone in the MISFITS camp would like to congratulate Jerry and his wife Joanna on the birth of their new baby girl Eva Marie .

"Lastly, we know some of you are waiting with baited breath for the new exclusive 45 'Psycho in the Wax Museum' available only with proof of purchase seals from 'Misfits Project 1950' , 'Balzac: Beyond the Darkness' and the 'Osaka Popstar' CD. More details, including how and where to redeem your proof of purchase seals, will be coming soon. Until then we will let you in on the fact that the record pressing and overall production process has taken a bit longer than originally anticipated because we've tried something very new and unique on this piece of vinyl. So new in fact that as far as we know, this process has never been done before. We weren't kidding when we said this record was our way of saying thanks to all of you who support what we're doing at Misfits Records . With that in mind, we've gone to great lengths to make this 45 extra cool for our supporters. It will be worth the wait and as you'll soon see, the additional time it's taken makes this 45 even more special and collectible. Not only will this record be one of the rarest MISFITS 45s ever, it will also be one of the coolest looking ones too! The wait won't be much longer... Stay tuned."

This special, highly limited collector’s edition 45, appropriately titled “Psycho in the Wax Museum” contains two rare, never before released tracks archived on clear vinyl with a picture sleeve featuring all-new artwork rendered by Butch Lukic!

Loyal fiends who’ve shown their support to the Misfits Records label and our roster of artists will now be rewarded with this very special and exclusive offer! Those who purchased our previous releases, “Misfits Project 1950” and “Balzac: Beyond the Darkness” were advised to save your proof of purchase seals. The third and final proof of purchase can now be found inside the debut release from Osaka Popstar entitled “Osaka Popstar and the American Legends of Punk” - in stores now! Redeem all 3 P.O.P. seals together and you'll receive this collectible vinyl Misfits 45 that will NOT be available anywhere else … period!

As our personal thanks to you, this 45 will be exclusive only to those who redeem all 3 original proof of purchase seals.

Yes fiends, JUST FOR YOU we’ve unearthed 2 never before released and never before completed Misfits tracks predating the American Psycho album! “Angel Baby” ( Click here for a Real Player clip ) and “Death of the Fallen Angel” ( Click here for a streaming MP3 clip ) were both written by founding member Jerry Only and properly recorded by the Misfits in their entirety prior to the release of American Psycho but the vocal tracks were never recorded. For that reason, the recordings were shelved and left in the vaults, seemingly never to be heard ... until now. The rough mixes in their original instrumental form, untouched and exactly as they were left over a decade ago, have been restored from a deteriorating source, digitally re-mastered and preserved in this vinyl 45 “wax museum” for your sole enjoyment ... FREE OF CHARGE!

The ONLY way to get it is to redeem all 3 proof of purchase seals! Please note that the “Misfits Project 1950” CD proof of purchase is the sticker (found on the outside of the shrink wrap of the CD case), which says "save this as proof of purchase". That proof of purchase sticker has always been on the Project 1950 CD and it is still available on the CD that you find in stores today. You must have that sticker; there will be no exceptions.

The Balzac Beyond the Darkness CD proof of purchase was also a sticker found on the outside of the shrink-wrap of the CD case. It too says "save this sticker as proof of purchase". We are aware that this Balzac CD has been issued in some instances without the sticker on the shrink-wrap. Due to that, to give everyone a fair chance, ONLY in the case of the Balzac “Beyond the Darkness” CD you will be allowed to send in EITHER the sticker from the shrink-wrap that says "proof of purchase" OR you can cut out the original UPC bar code (with the Misfits Records logo above it and the Japanese “Yami” symbol to the right of it), from the back cover of the CD and use that as your proof of purchase. That Balzac proof of purchase will be the ONLY exception.

For Misfits Project 1950 you must have the “proof of purchase” sticker and for Osaka Popstar you must have the proof of purchase seal found on the flyer/insert inside the CD. Every Osaka Popstar CD purchased new at retail contains the proof of purchase insert inside.

Additionally, Jerry appeared for a signing at the Nady Systems booth endorsing their new U33B Wireless Bass System. Jerry had this to say about the new bass system from Nady: "We've only used one wireless...NADY. The unit itself got smaller but with their new Bass Boost feature on the U33B wireless, the sound is even BIGGER. It's got a monster crunch sound regardless of the volume of the amp. It hits you right in the gut where the Bass should. You can feel it. The power of this new wireless will rattle your bones." - Jerry Only

BRAND NEW MISFITS STUDIO ALBUM IN THE WORKS!

What reviewers are saying about Misfits meet the Nutley Brass: Fiend Club Lounge: "Fiend Club Lounge features frankly piss-funny lounge-lizard reworkings of Misfits classics...Evil has never sounded so damn kitsch. Find it." - Paul Travers, Kerrang! "Ahh, this is genius. This is a really cool, fun CD and a definite must for hardcore Misfits fans." - Ben Snakepit, Razorcake "This album is absolute genius...ridiculously funny." - Shane Farver, Slugmag "Truly beyond type-able description, FIEND CLUB LOUNGE is simply... well absolutely, seam-splitting, pants-pizzilingly HYSTERICAL!" 4 Stars. - Gary Vermin, Horrorwood Babble on.com "after popping 'Fiend Club Lounge' into the ol' disc player in my car, I came within 5 feet of hitting a tree, after hearing the first 20 seconds of 'Last Caress'. For Misfits completists, this recording is a must have. If there is a Misfits fiend in your life, these lounge lizard interpretations will bring joy and uncontrollable laughter to their life. Imagine Tom Jones' back up orchestra playing out the music of bands like the Buzzcocks, Minor Threat, Black Flag, the Ramones, and the Misfits. Makes you chuckle just thinking about it, doesn't it? In short, the music is SO wrong, it's right. ---the Fiend Club Lounge is open for business, baby, so throw on your red smoking jackets and fez caps! If you are a Misfits fan, AND disturbing things make you smile, behold your Holy Grail." Rated in terms of twisted hilarity: 94 points. - DeadSun, Antimusic.com "sly, clever, and occasionally laugh-out-loud funny...there's no denying it's a hoot." - Keith Bergman, Blabbermouth.net "The first thing you need to understand about this release is that it is meant to be tongue and cheek. It's not meant to be a serious interpretation of the Misfits music; it's just meant to be fun. ...sounds like something Goldie Hawn would have danced to during the breaks on Laugh-In...could have easily fit in with the musical Grease or any Frankie Avalon movie. The Nutley Brass does an outstanding job of interpreting the Misfits music in an unconventional style. After hearing the Nutley Brass' version of 'Die Die My Darling' I realized it may not be so bad to die. If you enter the lounge with an open mind and a fondness for the Misfits, you're sure to have a good time. If you're someone that takes your music seriously you might not get what this CD is all about." 4 out of 5 Stars. -George Dionne, Rock-is-life.com "you need this most amazing cover CD by the Nutley Brass. This is a fun CD to listen to, one of those guilty pleasures that you just cannot let go of...this was honestly a great idea and Ryko did well to want to put this out. If you have an open mind and a sense of humor, you will check this out." 9/10 - Jeffrey Easton, Metal-Exiles.com "The collection reinterprets the Misfits as kitsch for the cocktail lounge, suggesting 1960s instrumental classics like Herb Alpert's Whipped Cream & Other Delights or anything from gonzo bandleader Juan Garcia Esquivel. Sam Elwitt, the composer behind Nutley Brass, has actually been at this awhile. He also did an album of instrumental pop Ramones covers, the highlight of which was a hilarious elevator music version of "Blitzkrieg Bop" that a nun could hum along to. "Hilarious" is right: Elwitt never gets too serious with his Nutley material, so there's no reason for punk rock purists to get bent out of shape over Fiend Club Lounge. It's a novelty that happens to be well written and kind of entertaining." 3 out of 5 - Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide "a collection of Misfits tracks performed so innocently that I wouldn't be surprised to hear them over the PA at my local department store. 'Teenagers From Mars' is probably about as weird as you could imagine, performed like the opening moments of a Broadway musical. 'Die, Die My Darling' closes out the album, performed like it should accompany the climax in a James Bond movie. Fiend Club Lounge is clearly a novelty performance; it has no pretensions about supplanting the Misfits, or even standing alone as a work, but for fans, it's a fun, and -- dare I say it -- 'cute' look at the Misfits." 3 out of 3 stars. Aubin, Punk News.org "First you heard about RICHARD CHEESE, then you heard about PAUL ANKA, but before these guys, there was THE NUTLEY BRASS. Brass is exactly what it takes, to take classic era MISFITS songs and render them into lounge music, brass balls, that is...those out there that are true fans of musicianship will absolutely love and appreciate the talent and creativity that it took to make a CD like this happen. I am a long time Misfits fan...it absolutely did not disappoint me." 5 Stars - Paragon Rob, Foundry Music.com "the Zombie masters are being paid homage to by their own stateside, NJ brothers The Nutley Brass Section just adds a whole new light to some of the classic Misfits music. 'Last Caress' is a kick especially after having the Metallica one drilled in the head this lightens up the whole vibe. 'Some Kind Of Hate' sounds like it could be in a horror movie or a follow up to Animal House. They close the thing out with 'Die, Die My Darling' and I'm floored. If you even take a dare to step over a musical line then you love this as if you like lounge music. We need more lounge music these days. This is a record that made my ears tune into different sounds and a cool tribute to the Jersey Phnom known as The Misfits." 3 Stars - Hammerhead Zine.com "You've heard their music covered by bands like AFI and more famously, Metallica; however, I bet Misfits have never been tweaked so uniquely by anyone as Sam Elwitt's Nutley Brass with their new tribute ...Fiend Club Lounge. It wasn't until a couple of minutes into 'Last Caress' that I realized I was listening to more than just a twisted tribute to Misfits music. While one might think the album was a humorous effort designed to fill a niche, there's actually a great respect for Misfits and their effect on the entire music scene from metal to ... well ... lounge. The weirdest thing for me was that I could almost hear Wayne Newton or Tom Jones singing the lyrics to 'Die, Die My Darling' and 'Hatebreeders,' which says a lot for the way the Nutley Brass played out their versions of these songs. Instrumentally, this album gave me chills. Fiend Club Lounge is well-rehearsed, expertly revised and the sinister undertones certainly put it on my list of the most original tribute albums of all time. If you're walking the line between our reality and the dark dimension, I recommend this record ... if for no other reason than to freak out your friends!" 3 & a half stars. - John Foxworthy, Garage Radio Jerry Only comments on Fiend Club Lounge :  "If Cat women from the moon landed in Tijuana in the 60's this is the kind of music they would march to! The Nutley Brass version of 'Die, Die My Darling' is swirling with 007 suspense like the soundtrack of an early James Bond movie. The horns seem to jet out like one of the old albums from the Tijuana Brass. Classic, I repeat, CLASSIC." Original Misfits guitarist Franché Coma comments: "I will say this: 'Misfits meet the Nutley Brass: Fiend Club Lounge' is one of the best renditions of some of the best Misfits songs ever recorded. Any true, and I mean true musician will appreciate the intricacies of the instrumentations on this CD. It takes punk music to a different level. It shows us how anything is possible if you want to make it happen. You'll think you are listening to a soundtrack from a big screen movie. A great lush theatrical feel. I compliment the engineers, the producers and everyone involved with this production. OUTSTANDING JOB!!! I was truly, truly, impressed! They should be proud of this release." It doesn’t hurt that there’s a lot of exciting newness in hospitality throughout both perennial hot spots and quieter cities that are now being thrust into Swifties’ consciousness. Because Europe is so easy to get around — remember those trains! — a pilgrimage to see the megawatt singer is also an invitation to explore further. For example, even if you missed her recently in Edinburgh, the Scottish capital is a worthwhile side trip as a slew of hotels are all ultra-attractive newcomers, including 100 Princes Street ( 100princes-street.com or via priceline.com ), the W Edinburgh ( marriott.com ) and the soon-to-open inland surfing destination Lost Shore Surf Resort .

Here, we round up a dozen of the most beautiful new hotels along Swift’s upcoming European tour dates .

Liverpool, England: June 15

The Halyard Liverpool Hotel : Just opened in March, this IHG Vignette Collection boutique hotel sits in the center of the city’s boho Ropewalks district for easy access to everything, including art, music and bazaars in Victorian warehouses. Charming and lush, the property features plenty of touches that reference the area’s mercantile history, but it’s also perfectly modern with amenities such as Temple Spa night creams and bath oils in the 133 rooms. The Halyard Liverpool, 123 Duke St., rooms from $273/night .

Cardiff, Wales: June 18

London, England: June 21, 22 and 23

Broadwick Soho : One of London’s buzziest — and most flamboyant — new hotels is this independent 57-room entry from November 2023, designed by illustrious Swedish interior designer Martin Brudnizki (Pendry West Hollywood, The Beekman). Its West End location makes it feel like an instant icon and its design references range from Jazz Age to disco era fabulousness with some English quirk. Among eating and drinking outlets there’s a basement-level, modern-meets–classic Italian restaurant and also a top-floor terrace bar, Flute. Broadwick Soho , 20 Broadwick Street, rooms from $757/night, via booking.com .

The BoTree : Not far from there is butler-staffed The BoTree, which opened in September 2023 with 169 vivid rooms and 30 opulent suites (think Dyson hairdryers, cocktail stations and balconies) all embodying an ethos of conscious luxury. The BoTree , 30 Marylebone Lane, rooms from $839/night, via booking.com and hotels.com .

Art’otel London Hoxton : Another appealing new getaway that opened in April with rooftop yoga, art workshops and aqua aerobics. Art’otel London Hoxton , 1-3 Rivington St., rooms from $391/night, via radissonhotels.com and booking.com .

Amsterdam, Netherlands: July 4, 5 and 6

Avani Museum Quarter Amsterdam : This just-opened hotel combines the best of Amsterdam — a canal-side location in the museum district — with a heavy art influence via Stedelijk Museum to create a unique and colorful atmosphere behind a brick and glass facade. A ‘60s vibe pervades the 163 guest rooms, which are equipped with yoga mats. Perhaps even more enticing: the partnership with Girls Who Magazine that has produced experiences including a street art tour and a standup paddleboard adventure down a canal with stops for pizza and craft beer plus a local swimming spot. Avani Museum Quarter Amsterdam , Hobbemakade 50, rooms from $210/night, via booking.com and hotels.com .

Park Hyatt Milano : Fresh off a multimillion-dollar renovation, the Park Hyatt Milano debuted its refresh in late March, just in time for its 20th anniversary. Much inspiration for the chic new look came from the nearby legendary Duomo Cathedral, while Milanese architectural details are visible — from the facade to the bright, airy guest rooms. Fine dining is on offer at Pellico 3 Milano. However, the prettiest space may just be Mio Lab Cocktail Bar, where every great night should end. Munich, Germany: July 27 and 28

Rosewood Munich : Before last October, Munich hadn’t seen a new luxury hotel in more than a decade, so the Rosewood opening in two Old Town landmark buildings (one a grand aristocratic residence) with interiors by Tara Bernerd & Partners was anticipated, to say the least. The gracious hotel spans 73 generous rooms, 59 suites and five exclusive houses that are sumptuous odes to the Bavarian royal family. See-and-be-seen outlets include an Alpine-esque brasserie and a bar with live music, while the Asaya Spa takes up two floors and offers integrative wellness experiences. Rosewood Munich , Kardinal-Faulhaber-Strasse 1, rooms from $869/night, via booking.com and hotels.com .

Vienna, Austria: August 8, 9 and 10

Imperial Riding School, Autograph Collection : This May 2024 opening takes its theme and name from its building’s 19th-century origins as the Austro-Hungarian military’s equestrian school. It was later a cinema, and now it’s home to 342 bedrooms that feel contemporary and warm, along with a lush green space in the Garden Palace Harrach’s former orchards. A 4,800-plus square foot wellness area, including an indoor swimming pool, gives guests ample opportunity to relax. Imperial Riding School, Autograph Collection , Ungargasse 60, rooms from $270/night, via booking.com and hotels.com .

Want to avoid Europe's tourist hordes? Try getting off the beaten track

European tourism is getting a makeover to strengthen remote communities with the help of EU-funded researchers.

The monastery of San Estevo de Ribas de Sil in northwestern Spain is located within 20 kilometers of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route, but for Martín López Nores the two places felt worlds apart. And that gave him an idea.

In 2019 López Nores, a professor in the Department of Telematics Engineering of the University of Vigo in Spain, attended an event at the 800-year-old monastery with researchers and local representatives. The participants discussed how best to revitalize rural economies.

While the Camino de Santiago has long been a popular pilgrim route to the holy site where St James the Apostle is believed to be buried, the monastery—deemed one of the most spectacular heritage spots in the Galicia region of Spain—was often overlooked by tourists.

"We were meeting in a jewel of a location—a remarkable place that goes unnoticed by thousands of pilgrims walking nearby," said López Nores. "We realized we needed to make it more visible, to draw people to it, to encourage people on the pilgrim route to get to know the area they are passing through, not just focus on getting to the next point in their guide."

He led a project that received EU funding to help spearhead a new form of tourism across Europe—a kind that moves away from the hordes of international visitors who fill countless European cities and towns for most of the year.

In doing so, López Nores took to heart a sentiment expressed by one of the 20th century's greatest wanderers, the late British writer and Philhellene Patrick Leigh Fermor. In 1966, Leigh Fermor commented on the emergence in Greece of mass tourism by writing that it "destroys the object of its love."

López Nores championed a different approach called "slow tourism," which encourages visitors to take time to immerse themselves in their surroundings.

"Mass tourism consumes places, whereas cultural tourism is about creating meaningful connections with people and places," he said. "It's a non-destructive way of tourism that gives benefits to everyone and somehow makes your mind a little bit richer, more interesting."

Spread the wealth

The many people who travel the Camino de Santiago spend considerable amounts of money—more than €300 million in 2019. But with few tourists straying from the path itself, the economic benefits are relatively narrow.

The phenomenon occurs across culturally rich Europe and inspired a group of Spanish and Portuguese researchers—including López Nores—to join forces in an effort to spread the benefits of pilgrimages. Called rurALLURE , their project ran for three years until the end of 2023.

The team's goal was to enhance the appeal of "cultural tourism" in countries ranging from Spain to Norway and ensure that tourism revenue goes beyond the main trails.

For the Camino de Santiago, the researchers created a web portal and an app to highlight cultural points of interest close to the route. These include museums, places of natural beauty and bars and restaurants with local foods and drinks such as Ribeira wines. A total of 7 362 such sites were mapped in this way by the project.

Also available are written and audio guide material, local voices and histories, as well as thematically grouped information on, for example, nature spots and regional traditions.

Other pilgrimages covered by rurALLURE included routes to Italy's capital Rome, paths known as the Saint Olav Ways leading to Trondheim in Norway and the Way of Mary, which traverses central Europe to Csíksomlyó in Romania.

New mindset

The researchers went beyond technology in a bid to foster a change in the mindset of businesses, cultural institutions and other organizations linked to the various routes.

A sense of competition, which at one time in some places in Europe even led to road signs to rival tourist spots being destroyed, has been replaced with a spirit of collaboration, according to López Nores.

A network of more than 100 members around Europe now coordinates efforts, believing they can attract visitors by working together and in turn raising the popularity of pilgrim routes as a whole. Best practices—plus insights into what hasn't worked so well—are freely available.

For instance, the northern Portuguese town of Vila do Conde, long accustomed to being shunned by tourists who flew to nearby Porto to make their way north to Santiago de Compostella—the culmination of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route—has reaped the benefits, according to López Nores.

The rurALLURE portal and app now feature the town—complete with multi-media content—in a guide to the literary heritage of the Camino de Santiago. As a result, the area has flourished as a destination for pilgrims and literature lovers alike.

"This cooperation strengthens our cultural community and promotes the exchange of knowledge and resources, benefitting everyone," said Ivone Teixeira, coordinator of the Vila do Conde Museum.

Although the impact of the rurALLURE app is difficult to measure in terms of overall tourist numbers, it is clearly making a difference for specific sites.

The Otero Pedrayo Foundation in the Galician village of Amoeiro, for instance, has seen a remarkable increase in visitor numbers as a result of featuring in rurALLURE's sites around the Silver Way—the longest but least traveled of the Caminos de Santiago.

Drop-in visitors to the house of this major personality of Galician culture have increased from just a few to nearly 200 per year.

Peripheral appeals

Peripheral communities in Europe were at the heart of another EU-funded tourism project called INCULTUM . An acronym for innovative cultural tourism, the project wrapped up in April 2024 after three years.

The researchers chose 10 pilot sites in nine countries ranging from Ireland to Slovakia. The sites are in remote areas that don't feature in traditional tourist guides.

"We wanted to highlight the values and potential of cultural heritage that has been denied or hidden," said José Maria Martín Civantos, professor in the Department of Medieval History at the University of Granada in Spain and the project coordinator. "We are using tourism as a tool, not an objective."

In Ireland, the pilot featured a grassroots heritage initiative in which local groups carry out field surveys of historic graveyards and record oral histories.

The initiative, called Historic Graves , expanded under INCULTUM to include the deaths that resulted from the Great Famine of 1845–1852, when around 1 million people died.

At this time, more than 1 million people also emigrated from Ireland. Many of their descendants in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are tracing their ancestry through Historic Graves, with some traveling to Ireland as part of the process.

In Slovakia, INCULTUM included an abandoned mining district in the central area of Banska Bystrica. The site is a source of industrial heritage as local schools and other groups work together to recover community memories.

In the works is an interactive digital map featuring "mining treasures" that tourists will be able to visit.

As it happens, this area also features in the rurALLURE digital maps because it lies on the Slovak section of the Way of Mary.

Better balance

Both projects offer a roadmap for Europe as it seeks to spread the economic benefits and ease the environmental costs of tourism.

For Martín Civantos, Europe must seek to revive rural areas in a way that is true to their past while reimagining their future. He said such an approach serves both tourists and local communities over the long run.

"It means you are visiting a place, but you're not having a negative impact on the environment or community," said Martín Civantos. "In fact, you are helping the community to maintain its values and heritage and giving something positive back."

Susan Seidelman on Directing the ‘Grittier’ Pilot for ‘Sex and the City,’ Casting Madonna in ‘Desperately Seeking Susan’: ‘She Loved Being Provocative’

Desperately Seeking Susan

It’s New York City, 1989. Susan Seidelman is in the delivery room, in labor with her son. “Siskel and Ebert” plays on the TV, and in between contractions, the two critics are tearing apart her new movie “She-Devil.” “Watching them review my film literally with the doctor’s hand inside of me telling me to push was very strange,” Seidelman recalls.

Regulators shouldn’t blow the whistle on venu sports just yet, inside cnn's unprecedented biden-trump debate telecast that rivals have to share , popular on variety.

Now, 42 years after she walked up the Palais steps as a first-timer, Seidelman is looking back at her eventful life as a trail-blazing director. Along the way, there were triumphs like “ Desperately Seeking Susan ” and the pilot for “ Sex and the City ,” along with spirited misfires like “Making Mr. Right.” In her new memoir “Desperately Seeking Something,” Seidelman considers her varied career in the hopes aspiring young filmmakers might glean some insight from her ups and downs over four decades in the trenches.

Growing up in suburban Philadelphia in the early ‘60s, directing just wasn’t on her radar, so she majored in fashion and art. A film appreciation class changed her trajectory, and she entered NYU as a graduate film student, then managed to scrape together the funds for her first feature.

“Smithereens” is an endearing relic of the fast-disappearing Lower Eastside scene of the early ‘80s, starring real-life punk pioneer Richard Hell alongside Susan Berman as aspiring musician Wren, a runaway who gets what she wants through larceny and seduction.

“Smithereens” cost $40,000 to make — $60,000 counting the blowup to 35mm so it could play in Cannes, since it was shot on 16mm. “On a whim, I sent it off to the Cannes Film Festival, never anticipating that that would change my life,” she says.

Along with a who’s who of European greats in competition that year, “There was ‘Shoot the Moon’ by Alan Parker, with Diane Keaton and Albert Finney and Costa Gavras’ ‘Missing’ with Jack Lemmon and Sissy Spacek,” Seidelman remembers. “So we kind of felt like this little group of scruffy misfits. That made it a lot of fun and surreal.”

After the unprecedented Cannes debut, she started getting offers to direct. But not many screenwriters in the early ‘80s were writing the kind of material Seidelman was interested in, incorporating complicated and spirited female characters.

“They were kind of dopey cheerleader girls or babysitter horror movies and I knew I had to be really smart about what I pick next,” she says. “I had heard some unfortunate stories about a female director who had made one low budget movie that was lauded and then tried to make another movie with a heavy-handed producer and was not happy with the way it came out.”

When she came across the script that would become the seminal 1980s New York movie “Desperately Seeking Susan,” she knew had finally found something with a sensibility close to her own. “It was about reinvention, and about coming from one kind of living a certain kind of life, but wishing inside that you could maybe be living another life or be somebody else, which is essentially the theme of ‘Smithereens’ as well,” she says.

For the role of Susan, she auditioned a young singer who wasn’t yet widely known. In fact, Madonna had to convince Orion production executive Barbara Boyle she could handle the part.

As Seidelman recounts in her book, Madonna pleaded with Boyle, “I’ll do anything to get this part.” Boyle shot back, “Sorry, I’m heterosexual.” Madonna parried, “How do you you know until you try?”

That cheekiness was what convinced the producers she could pull off the role with charm and style, Seidelman says.

“She loved being provocative,” Seidelman says, “That’s part of her thing.”

But, “No one had any idea that the film would get caught up in Madonna mania, and suddenly it would be the Madonna movie,” she recalls.

“We were a little bit nervous that people would come with expectations that this was a movie filled with her music and it wasn’t, but fortunately, it was filled with her style.”

Orion rushed “Desperately Seeking Susan” into theaters to make sure Madonna’s star didn’t fall after “Like a Virgin,” and it was a box office hit.

“They didn’t know how long she was gonna last,” Seidelman says. “So they wanted to make sure that the movie was out in time to capitalize on that. Who knew that four decades later, she’d still be on tour?”

Meanwhile, the part of Madonna’s punk rock boyfriend nearly went to a young Bruce Willis. Though the chemistry wasn’t quite right, he did end up bartending the wrap party, and later thanked Seidelman for turning him down, which spurred Willis to move to L.A. and audition for “Moonlighting.”

While it was Madonna’s first major film role, Seidelman went on to work with seasoned pros like Meryl Streep on “She Devil.” On that feminist comedy, she learned the main thing was to get out of the way. “When you work with somebody like Meryl, I’m directing the story, I’m not directing her performance. There’s nothing I can tell her about acting that she doesn’t know better than me. So it’s just a different way of working,” she says.

Though Seidelman directed some movies for Showtime, she didn’t think she wanted to move into TV at first, since the age of prestige television was just dawning. But when she was sent the script for Darren Star’s “Sex and the City” pilot, something clicked.

“I liked that it was about women of a certain age, because I think you know, your mid-30s are an interesting time in your life and also an interesting time to be single in a big city,” Seidelman says.

“What I love about the show and what I love about New York, is that it is a fairytale city but it also is you know it’s got sad stories. It’s a place where dreamers come and some achieve their dreams and find Mr. Right and some don’t, so I liked that mix, happy with a bit of sad.”

The pilot has a decidedly different feel than what the show ultimately became. Her vision was a little more funky, a lot less Louboutin.

“At least in the first season, it’s grittier. You sense that the women are a bit more aspirational. By the end of the show, they’re rich,” she says.

Seidelman is pleased that women directors are flourishing in TV. But “fewer women have the op- portunity to direct feature films, and even fewer have the opportunity to direct big-budget feature films,” she points out.

“After I made ‘Making Mr. Right,’ which was a box office disappointment. I was thrilled when I got an agent that enabled me to get another movie so I could fail upwards. Like the boys, right?’

But all along, her goal has been to “tell stories about women and make them as interesting as men have been traditionally in movies.”

“My favorite male characters have been the ones that are both good and bad, manipulative, and not always nice like Ratso Rizzo or Dustin Hoffman in ‘The Godfather ‘or all the characters Jack Nicholson played in the 70s and 80s. They’re not necessarily nice, but they’re interesting.

Take Wren in “Smithereens,” Seidelman points out. “That character is not a nice person. She’s narcissistic. She’s manipulative.”

While she was working on the memoir, the Harvey Weinstein trial was in the news, and Seidelman decided she wanted to end the book with her account of a sexual assault she experienced when she was a young woman and had never talked about. Why now, after all this time?

“I wanted to find some closure. Many women have those stories and don’t tell them, so I was lending my support to some of the women that I personally knew,” she says.

Like her #MeToo story, she hopes the rest of the book will also be a way to support women just getting started.

Reflecting on her own adventures in Hollywood, she says, “I didn’t have that book,” she says. “I hope that I can pass on some lessons learned, mistakes made, the whole roller coaster ride of being a woman in the film industry.”

SF Giants notes: The rotation is in shambles, but Blake Snell isn’t ready to provide aid

Apr 19, 2024; San Francisco, California, USA; San Francisco Giants pitcher Blake Snell (7) reacts after walking an Arizona Diamondbacks batter during the fourth inning at Oracle Park. Mandatory Credit: John Hefti-USA TODAY Sports

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Blake Snell walked to a waiting black SUV as 101-degree heat radiated off the pavement. He didn’t want to stop to talk to two reporters who waited for him in the parking lot outside the Sacramento River Cats’ clubhouse Sunday afternoon.

The heat wasn’t the reason.

“Anything I say, it feels like I’m making an excuse,” Snell said. “It’s frustrating.”

The San Francisco Giants’ rotation is in shambles. The news gets worse. Snell appears unready to ride to the rescue. He couldn’t make it out of the second inning of a Triple-A rehab start at Sutter Health Park, getting pulled after issuing a two-out walk on his 51st pitch, and acknowledged that he is still battling to get physically and mentally past the groin injury that has sent him to the injured list twice amid a highly disappointing first half.

It hasn’t helped Snell to be aware that the Giants are desperate for his return.

“I’ve just been fighting to rush back,” Snell said. “That’s my take. I’m more frustrated with that. And then you don’t get the product of what I should be. It’s just frustrating. I want to go out there and dominate and pitch how I know I can pitch. But it’s more important that I’m out there. So, yeah.

“I haven’t felt like me yet. It’s ‘All right, c’mon, we need you, we need you, we need you.’ It’s not like, ‘Let’s get him right.’ And then I have to deal with it.”

The Giants are understandably impatient. They understood when they signed Snell to a two-year, $62 million contract on March 18 that they weren’t going to receive the kind of dominant, wire-to-wire season that a team typically would expect from a reigning Cy Young Award winner. They knew about Snell’s reputation as a second-half pitcher and how missing nearly all of spring training would impact his ability to compete in April and May.

Now it’s late June and Snell is 0-3 with a 9.51 ERA and minus-1.1 WAR in six starts. He hasn’t completed five innings in any of his starts. But the Giants are not in a position to be picky. Their rotation is down to Logan Webb and converted reliever Jordan Hicks , who acknowledged he was gassed Saturday in St. Louis when he surpassed his major-league high for innings in a season. Kyle Harrison and Keaton Winn are on the IL. The other young pitching depth options expected to graduate this season either haven’t performed well when given the chance ( Mason Black ) or are on the injury shelf ( Landen Roupp ). And Alex Cobb ’s best-case scenario would be a return in July as he attempts to get past elbow and shoulder setbacks.

The Giants are listing their starters as TBA for all three games against the Chicago Cubs when they open a homestand Monday. Snell made it clear he won’t be ready to contribute by the end of the week.

“I’m going to do more rehab starts,” Snell said. “I have to. I got to 50 pitches but I need to get in sync, repeat pitches, repeat delivery, practice fielding — there’s a lot I have to do still.”

Snell gave up a run on a walk and a double in the first inning and would’ve thrown more pitches if second baseman Marco Luciano hadn’t started an unorthodox 4-5-6-4 double play. But the pitches piled up for Snell in the second inning. He retired just two of six batters while issuing two walks. He tried to use the new Triple-A challenge system to his benefit when he appealed a 3-2 pitch to Round Rock right fielder (and former Giants farmhand) Sandro Fabian . But the automated system showed that the ball missed clipping the zone by millimeters.

“I’m more impressed with how (the umpire) called, like, 0.5 (inches) off a ball,” Snell said. “I wasn’t going to challenge anything, but my fastball command was not where I want it. I’m just not able to trust it.”

Snell’s fastball topped out at 95 mph, but he only took so many positives out of that.

“I was absolutely shocked by it,” Snell said. “I don’t know how. I have no idea (because) I was not using my legs. I couldn’t believe it.

“If I’m 90, 91, I’ll be happy. The curveball was, like, humpy, the changeup, some of them were high verts and then at the end there I finally got in front of them and had some good ones. Slider was just spinning. I’ll go home and think about it and reflect.

“But yeah. I’m still a ways away. It’s just not good. For where I want to be? No.

“And then fastball command, I wasn’t arm-side missing so that’s good. I was trying to get in the zone but still (had) inside misses and then down. But that’s what you get when you’re all arm and not synced up. It’s good to get out there. That’s the positive. I’m out there, I’m pitching. But I’ve got to get synced up and repeat the delivery and start to really take strides. When I do that then I’ll be happier.

“Today I was not using my legs, not synced up. Didn’t feel good coming into this.”

“This has been the most frustrating. I haven’t felt like myself.”

It was a rare double-rehab feature at Sutter Health Park as another recent Cy Young Award winner, Robbie Ray , made his first Triple-A appearance while ramping up from Tommy John surgery. Ray’s fastball sat at 93 mph as he threw 45 pitches in 2 1/3 innings. He struck out two and issued one walk, and the only hit he allowed was scored a double that second baseman Marco Luciano lost in the sun.

TOMORROW: Sutter Health Park is turning orange for a triple rehab assignment! 🔥 Catch Blake Snell, Robbie Ray, and LaMonte Wade Jr in Sactown tomorrow at 1:05pm. tickets: https://t.co/SHwScs1Sgj pic.twitter.com/loToaM9p4d — Sacramento River Cats (@RiverCats) June 23, 2024

Unlike Snell, Ray said he hasn’t felt rushed by the organization.

But is it difficult to focus on checking boxes in his rehab protocols while knowing the team has such an acute need in the rotation right now?

“The team is really adamant about not rushing me, which I am very thankful for, because there is a need right now in the rotation,” Ray said. “For me, it’s just focusing on what I can do to get better. For me right now it’s going out every fifth day and building up pitches and innings.”

Ray called Sunday’s start a big step because he got to test his stamina in demanding conditions — “That’s the most I’ve thrown,” he said — against hitters including Matt Duffy who have big-league service time. He also appreciated being able to pitch in front of fans again.

“Everything for me plays off fastball command so that’s been my main focus through this rehab process,” Ray said. “It’s no secret that I throw a lot of fastballs. Guys know it’s coming. I feel I’ve done a good job in this process getting to where I want to be in terms of location and command. For me, everything else plays off that.

“Getting ahead of guys, I felt I had the stuff to put them away pretty easily. So that was the main focus today — throw a lot of strikes.”

Ray wasn’t sure when he would make his next rehab start, but if he recovers well, he’s likely to pitch for Low-A San Jose toward the end of the week. He’s likely to bounce between San Jose and Sacramento — whoever happens to be home — as he continues to build his pitch count. Without any hiccups, he could make his Giants debut shortly after the All-Star break next month.

“I feel I’m hitting the milestones,” Ray said. “It’s obviously a long process, but I’m starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.”

misfits tour europe

LaMonte Wade Jr. (strained hamstring) completed the Giants’ rehab trifecta while starting at designated hitter and batting leadoff. He lined out, drew three walks and scored twice but didn’t have to bust it on the basepaths.

He’s also still soaking in Thursday’s experience at Rickwood Field — including the fact that the Hall of Fame requested and received his San Francisco Sea Lions jersey after he presented the lineup card and participated in pregame ceremonies that saluted the Negro Leagues.

“My dad called me and he talked about how that was really cool,” Wade said. “It still hasn’t really set in yet but that was an amazing experience, the Rickwood game. I think that’s something that has to be done every year for sure. It was a great event. It definitely means a lot to know my jersey will be in the Hall of Fame.”

Wade and St. Louis coach Willie McGee stood on either side of Bill Greason, the 99-year-old former Negro Leagues star who became the first Black pitcher to wear a Cardinals uniform, as he threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Wade remained disappointed that he wasn’t able to play in the game but said it was overwhelming to factor so prominently in the ceremonies.

“That was kind of a surprise for me,” said Wade, who also appreciated that the Giants paid the way for every minor-leaguer with African American heritage to take leave from their clubs and travel to Birmingham, Ala., to watch the game. “That whole event was done the right way. Definitely got a lot of pictures taken. And definitely have a lot of memories for sure.”

Wade wasn’t sure how many rehab games he would require but he knows he won’t be activated Monday.

“I felt fine, just a little nervous, first day and didn’t want to do anything so crazy,” Wade said. “It was just getting back in the box and seeing pitches and, honestly, just getting through the day. So it was a good day.”

When Luciano made his first start as a second baseman last week, club officials said it was because they wanted Nick Ahmed to start at shortstop while with the River Cats on a rehab assignment. But Ahmed is back in the big leagues and Luciano is still getting reps at second base. Utilityman Tyler Fitzgerald started at shortstop across from Luciano on Sunday.

It wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world if the Giants move Luciano off shortstop — his bat was always going to be what carried him to the big leagues and made him a potential impact player — but the process of figuring out his ultimate major-league position is a fascinating one. And it’ll be worth watching all season.

Triple-A observers have been blown away by right-hander Hayden Birdsong , who has struck out 14 in nine innings over two starts since being promoted from Double-A Richmond. But Birdsong is not on the 40-man roster. Neither is left-hander Carson Whisenhunt or right-hander Carson Seymour . And the Giants will have to be judicious about adding players to the roster when they’ll already be caught in a squeeze when it comes time to activate Ray, Alex Cobb, Tristan Beck and potentially right-hander Austin Warren as well.

What the Giants need is veteran pitching depth that they could turn and burn if needed. One potential source is a familiar one: right-hander Johnny Cueto , who pitched for the Texas Rangers’ Triple-A Round Rock club on Wednesday at Sacramento and held the River Cats to one run on two hits with no walks in six innings. Cueto has a 4.75 ERA in seven starts for Round Rock but has thrown strikes consistently. He has an opt-out on July 1.
