Check out the map above where I have you’ll find a few nearby bars and a shopping centre that closes at 11.30pm. Our advice is to have a little wander and find where the locals are. That’s going to be your cheapest and best option.

Have your passports ready upon booking, as non-residents must fill in their passport numbers.

Ola, can you also leave luggage at the club? Or can you bring a backpack?

You’ll be fine with a backpack, but wouldn’t risk luggage. Where are you staying? We found easyhotels to be very accommodating with our bags and checking in early. There’s also storage lockers near Malaga Maria Zambrano Train Station.

This unique tour will take you on a football adventure: starting with the museum, featuring its new UEFA Champions League exhibition, before moving on to the VIP area, the directors' box, the media room and mixed zone, the La Rosaleda Hall of History...

And, in addition to an exclusive chance to follow in the footsteps of your favourite players by walking down the tunnel before emerging onto the La Rosaleda pitch, you will feel like one of the team with a look inside the players' dressing room, the scene of so many Malaga team celebrations.

Estadio La Rosaleda

Club: Málaga CF | Opening: 1941 | Capacity: 30,044 seats

History and description

The first stone of Estadio La Rosaleda was laid on 21 June 1936, however due to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War it took four years for building works to actually start.

The first match at La Rosaleda was played on 13 April 1941. Málaga, then still called Malacitano, beat guests Ferroviaria 6-0. The match had been put forward due to the destruction of the pitch of Malacitano’s old ground by a thunderstorm.

Estadio La Rosaleda officially opened on 14 September of the same year with a match between Málaga and Sevilla. The stadium back then counted with a capacity of about 8,000 places.

In the following years, La Rosaleda got gradually expanded, and the construction of a new two-tiered east stand in 1965 resulted in a capacity of about 22,000.

Estadio La Rosaleda was selected as one of the playing venues for the 1982 World Cup, and therefore needed further expansions. Second tiers were erected on the remaining single-tiered stands, the pitch was lowered to create extra rows of seating, and the rest of the stadium got extensively refurbished.

During the World Cup, La Rosaleda hosted three first round group matches. Capacity at that time was about 37,000.

The stadium remained practically unchanged for the next 20 years, until in 2000 a major redevelopment program was started. Over a period of six years, La Rosaleda got gradually rebuilt and renovated, resulting in more cover, increased hospitality facilities, and better comfort, but also a reduction in capacity to under 30,000.

How to get to La Rosaleda

Estadio La Rosaleda is located in the north of Malaga at less than 2 kilometres from Malaga’s cathedral in the historic city centre. The walk to the stadium can be made in 20 to 30 minutes.

Malaga’s main railway station lies about 1 kilometre further away. There is no direct bus from the railway station to the stadium, but a 10-minute walk brings you to the centre from where there are various options.

Most buses depart from the Alameda Principal. If you take bus 17 (to La Palma), get off at stop Avda. Dr. Marañón. If bus 26 (to Alegría de la Huerta), get off at stop Rosario Pino. And if bus 2 (to Ciudad Jardín), get off at Jorge Silvela. In all cases the ride will take less than 10 minutes, which will be followed by a few minutes walking.

Eat, drink, and sleep near La Rosaleda

Estadio La Rosaleda is located in a rather quiet area that is a mix of residential buildings, offices, and some retail activity. Large shopping centre Centro Comercial La Rosaleda lies a few hundred metres from the stadium and boasts a few coffee shops, fast food restaurants, and a cinema.

It being Spain, there is always the odd bar or restaurant in the adjoining neighbourhoods, but Malaga’s city centre is nearby and offers many more options. Malaga’s nightlife pretty much revolves around the Calle Larios and Calle Granada.

There are no hotels right by Estadio La Rosaleda, but if you pick a hotel in the north-western part of the city centre, it only takes you 15 minutes walking to get to the stadium.

Hotel Tribuna , Ibis Málaga Centro , and Salles Hotel Málaga are located around the Guadalmedina river(bed), get good reviews, and are affordable. Options toward the north of the centre include Hotel Del Pintor , Casa de las Mercedes , and the more budget La Casa Mata Central . Malaga Tickets

Tickets for Malaga games can be bought online through Proticketing or  Ticketmaster , or at the ticket windows (taquillas) of Estadio La Rosaleda from a few days before the match.

The ticket windows also open on the day of the match, though Malaga do sell out a few high-profile matches per season.

Ticket prices depend on the opponent, but for a low-profile match range from €15.00 for an upper-tier seat behind one of the goals to €50.00 for a central seat at the main stand. Expect to pay at least €90.00 when the likes of Barcelona and Madrid come to visit.

Estadio La Rosaleda stadium tours

Malaga offer guided stadium tours that include the away dressing room, VIP areas, Presidential box, and press room. The tours last 45 to 60 minutes.

Estadio La Rosaleda furthermore houses the Museo Málaga CF, a museum dedicated to the history of the club.

The museum opens Mondays to Saturday from 10:30 am to 8:30 pm (and closes between 2:30pm and 4:30pm). Tour run multiple times a day in the morning and evening hours. Entrance costs €10.00.

Currently in the top four of La Liga, Malaga Club de Futbal has recently beaten Real Madrid at home and are playing well – finishing top of their group in the Champions League and through to the last 16. Most games are a sell out, so buy your tickets early or consider purchasing a season ticket next year if any become available! Before the game, enjoy a drink at one of the many pop-up bars, and buy your Pipas (Spanish sunflower seeds) on your way to the stadium to munch throughout the game like a true local! There is very rarely any trouble, and all the family come along to enjoy the game, whatever time of day or night and regardless of whether there is school the next day or not!

Málaga Club de Fútbol, commonly referred to as Málaga, is a Spanish professional football club in Málaga, Spain. The club competes in the Segunda División, the second tier of Spanish football.

Málaga CF Youth Development System

Málaga Club de Fútbol has in the Academy an important responsibility based on sports, education and teaching development. The young players within the youth ranks belong to an entity that oversees education and teaching as starting points for the development of sporting activities.

Values that the Club conveys from the foundation so our young players develop in all areas of life. Respect for the rival, solidarity and sportsmanship are values also associated with the Academy that, thanks to this philosophy and methodology, as well as boasting a Sports City that is soon to be a reality, becomes a benchmark for youth ranks on a national and European level.

Málaga Youth Teams

The MCF Academy is composed of numerous teams that make up the Club’s grassroots football. The lower categories include Juvenil, Cadete, Infantil, Alevín, Benjamín and Prebenjamín, in which the young footballers grow as players and people, with the support of the group of coaches who prioritise the development of the player, without obviating the competitive aspect.

The positive results support the progressive growth of the youth teams, that in the Juvenil División de Honor has one of its greatest exponents, being the last step before moving up to Málaga CF’s reserve team, Club Atlético Malagueño. To see a list of all youth teams, please click here.

Club Atlético Malagueño

With the aim of developing players, and prevailing the spirit of the Academy, Club Atlético Malagueño is a team comprising of young footballers who aspire to reach the first team.

Their main task is to offer mechanisms of play that allow for collective and individual growth in each of the players that form part of the squad. Málaga CF History

The origins of Málaga may be traced back to CD Málaga, a club that was established in 1904. After CD Málaga absorbed CD Santo Tomás for the purpose of establishing a reserve team, Club Atlético Malagueo was established on May 25, 1948 as a former reserve team of CD Málaga. This occurred after CD Málaga, which had absorbed CD Santo Tomás for the purpose of establishing a reserve team, took over as Málaga’s main team.

After the conclusion of the 1958–1959 Segunda División season, Club Atlético Malagueo and CD Málaga were placed in the same division of the Tercera División for the 1959–1960 season. This was due to CD Málaga’s relegation from the Segunda División. The former group ought to have competed in the lower-level regional tournaments given their status as a reserve squad. They severed ties with their previous club in order to circumvent this situation, and subsequently registered with the Royal Spanish Football Federation as an independent club. Following CD Malaga’s decision to cease operations, CA Malagueo was able to continue operating as a result of this action.

During the 1992–1993 year, CA Malagueo competed in the Tercera División Group 9 competition. As a result of the club’s strong performance during the previous season, it was awarded promotion to the Segunda División B. The next year, however, the club once again finished in the bottom division, and because of ongoing financial issues, they were in risk of going out of business.

CA Malagueo changed their name to Málaga Club de Ftbol S.A.D. on June 29, 1994, following the results of a referendum held by the club’s members on December 19, 1993. The members voted in favor of changing the club’s name.

At the beginning of the 2000s, Málaga was a club that possessed a stadium that was more up to date and developed as well as a youthful player pool of the highest caliber. Málaga enjoyed consistent success throughout Joaqun Peiró’s tenure as head coach, although the club was never competitive enough to make a run at the Champions League.

They participated in the UEFA Intertoto Cup just once, in 2002, and won it after claiming victories over Gent, Willem II, and Villarreal . This is the only recognized trophy they have ever won. Málaga’s run in the UEFA Cup was something of an overachievement, and it ended in a loss on penalties to Boavista in the quarter-finals. Prior to that, Málaga had defeated eljezniar Sarajevo (who had been eliminated from the Champions League by Newcastle United), Amica Wronki, Leeds United (after a 2–1 win at Elland Road, courtesy of two goals scored by Julio Dely Valdés

After Peiró’s retirement, there was a slow but steady departure of employees. All of the club’s former players, Daro Silva, Kiki Musampa, Dely Valdés, and Pedro Contreras, have departed. Juande Ramos took over as coach and oversaw a 5–1 home thrashing of Barcelona , the club’s biggest victory against the Catalan giants, with a hat-trick from loanee Salva Ballesta, who would ultimately end up missing out on the Pichichi Trophy by just two goals. This victory was the club’s biggest victory against the Catalan giants. Gregorio Manzano, however, replaced Ramos as the leader of the team after Ramos departed for the Sevilla .

Manzano was able to take Málaga to their second straight tenth-place finish, but he was not successful in preventing a poor team from being relegated, as they finished at the bottom of the league with a meager 24 points to their name.

Málaga got off to a strong start in the new season in the second division. Despite this, they had a severe decline in performance and spent two of the remaining six weeks in the bottom three in the standings. Malaga was able to rectify the problem and finish their first year in the Segunda division with a winning record.

The 2007–2008 Segunda División season similarly got off to a strong start, winning its first seven games in a row. It appeared like Málaga would be able to advance to the next level, but after suffering yet another dip in performance, Numancia was able to pass them and grab the lead. They required a win in their last game, which was against Tenerife at home in order to guarantee promotion. Málaga earned promotion to the top division of Spanish soccer as the runner-up after claiming a 2–1 victory thanks to two goals scored by Antonio Hidalgo.

Because of the club’s financial difficulties, Fernando Sanz, who was serving as president at the time, searched for investments in Doha, Qatar, in order to kick off an ambitious project. During this time, he had meetings with sheikh Abdullah ben Nasser Al Thani. Al Thani became the new owner of the company on June 11, 2010, following a week of discussions. On July 28, 2010, during a meeting of the members, Al Thani was elected president of the company.

On June 28, 2010, Jesualdo Ferreira was hired on as the head coach, while Moayad Shatat was hired as the vice president and general manager of the organization. After this, notable players like as Salomón Rondon and Eliseu were brought on as free agents to join the team. However, Jesualdo was let go in November due to the fact that he had not achieved the anticipated performance, which put the club in a position where it was in danger of being relegated. After some time had passed, Shatat confirmed Manuel Pellegrini’s position as coach.

While “The Caretaker” was in control of the team, the decision was made to release some members of the squad and replace them with stronger players such as center defender Martn Demichelis and midfielder Jlio Baptista.

The squad was able to keep up its momentum in the league thanks to a record-setting streak of five consecutive victories in La Liga, as well as a draw against Athletic Bilbao at San Mamés at the beginning of January 2011. As a result, the team finished the 2010–11 season in 11th position.

The club made the decision to strike a contract with Nike in order to have them serve as their uniform supplier for the 2011–12 season.

Málaga also came to an agreement to work together with UNESCO, which, in addition to becoming the primary sponsor of the club’s shirt, became a partner in the project.

The Dutchman Ruud van Nistelrooy, the former Lyon midfielder Jérémy Toulalan, and the most expensive signing in the club’s history, Santi Cazorla, who arrived from Villarreal in a deal worth €21 million, were the more notable signings during that season. Jérémy Toulalan was the French midfielder who had previously played for Lyon. Other players who did not garner as much attention, such as left back Nacho Monreal and midfielder Joaqun, both of whom have played for Spain at the international level, were essential to the success of the next season for Málaga. After finishing in fourth place during the 2011–12 season of La Liga, the club earned a spot in the Champions League for the very first time in its long and illustrious history. Málaga, who were competing in the Champions League for the very first time, were placed in a group containing the illustrious Italian club Milan, as well as the reigning national champions of Belgium and Russia, Anderlecht and Zenit Saint Petersburg, respectively.

Málaga advanced to the knockout round without suffering a single loss, prevailing in each of their meetings against the other three clubs. The squad drew the Portuguese champions Porto in the round of 16, and after suffering a loss on the road by a score of 1-0, they prevailed at home by a score of 2-0 and advanced to the quarter-finals. When Malagauistas played the German champions Borussia Dortmund in a match that was eagerly anticipated, the home game resulted in a scoreless draw. This gave Malagauistas a realistic opportunity to progress on the basis of a scoreless draw in the road matchup. The scoreboard showed 1–2 at the full 90 minutes mark, seemingly ensuring Málaga’s place in the semi-finals. However, two late goals by Marco Reus (in the 90+1st minute) and Felipe Santana (in the 90+3rd minute) turned the table in favor of the home team. In a second leg that was marked by controversial referee decisions, the scoreboard showed 1–2. The club president, Abdullah ben Nasser Al Thani, made the announcement shortly after the elimination that a formal protest will be filed with both UEFA and FIFA.

After the conclusion of the previous campaign, the UEFA decided to expel Málaga and several other teams due to their mounting debts. The organization said in a statement that the club would not be allowed to participate in any future competitions for which it would have otherwise qualified over the following four years. However, the suspension was later reduced to only one season, and the team was barred from participating in the Europa League in 2013–2014.

After 2013, Málaga fell into a continuous slide that would result in them finishing in a lower position in the league each year. This trend would continue until 2018. Málaga took on Levante U.D. on April 19, 2018, with the goal of breaking their losing streak of 10 games in a row, which had dropped them to 20th position in the LaLiga standings. Despite this, things went from bad to worse for Málaga, as they let Emmanuel Boateng of Levante score a goal during stoppage time, which resulted in the game ending with a score of 0–1. As a result of this defeat, Málaga would be demoted to the Segunda División, putting an end to their streak of 10 consecutive seasons playing in the Primera División.

Málaga finished third in the Segunda División in 2019, although they were knocked out of the play-offs by Deportivo de La Corua in the first round. As a result, they did not earn promotion to La Liga for the 2019 season. For the 2019–20 Segunda División season, Víctor Sánchez del Amo will remain as coach.

Early in the year 2020, it was reported that club owner Sheikh Abdullah Al Thani and his family, who owed Málaga €7.3 million in loans and credit lines, were buying out shares from smaller shareholders to be directed to their personal expenses and business interests. However, as of February 2022, there has been no evidence to prove any misconduct that would allow the courts to rule that a criminal case is justified.

In August of 2020, the court-appointed administrator made a statement saying that in order to rescue the club from going out of business, he would be firing every member of the first-team squad.

Málaga CF Stadium

A football stadium known as Estadio La Rosaleda can be found in the city of Málaga, which is located in the region of Andalucia in southern Spain. It is the home stadium of Málaga CF in the Segunda División and was formerly that of the Club Deportivo Málaga, which Málaga CF is the heir to. Málaga CF plays in the Segunda División. During the time that he was playing in the second division, the subsidiary Atlético Malagueo utilized it as a regular playing surface. This stadium is the site of an annual football competition known as the Costa del Sol Trophy Cup, which is put on by the Malaga Football Club in collaboration with the Malaga Municipality. It is the 18th largest stadium in Spain and the 4th largest in Andalusia, with a total capacity of 30,044 seats.

This took the place of the old arena of Baos del Carmen’s football pitch. As a result of the flooding, the rose garden was put to use for the first time on April 13, 1941, when it hosted a match between the CD Málaga and the AD Ferroviaria. On the other hand, the formal opening was on September 14, 1941, and it consisted of a friendly match between the CD Málaga and Sevilla. During this match, CD Málaga debuted its new name, which is a change from its former moniker, CD Malacitano.

Moneyed, erratic Malaga Club de Futbol have been looking to usurp Sevilla and Betis as the main club in Andalucia, even take on Atletico Madrid and Valencia as the main challengers to Spain’s big two.

These lofty ambitions seemed pretty hollow when the club was refused entry to the Europa League 2013-14 due to financial irregularities – their place taken by Betis. Only months before, Malaga had come bitterly close to spot in the Champions League semi-final, two overtime goals by Borussia Dortmund sealing the tie.

The story of football in Malaga , principal city on Spain’s sunny, moneyed Costa del Sol, has not always been a happy or simple one. The current set-up is equally opaque. Backed by Qatari money since 2010, Malaga CF achieved a fourth-placed finish in 2012, the highest in the history of Los Boquerones (‘The Anchovies’).

Since then star players have been offloaded with regularity. Despite significant support from the British expat community in nearby Marbella, Malaga CF may yet have to wait a while for another crack at Europe.

The current club came into existence in 1992, when the city’s main Club Deportivo Malaga folded and subsumed their youth team, Club Atletico Malagueno, in the Third Division.

Malagueno had their own historic links to a complex merger in 1933, three decades after the original Malaga FC were formed.

In the early 20th century, there were two main clubs in town: Malaga FC (later Real Malaga FC, later Malaga Sports Club) and FC Malagueno. Both were founding members of the Spanish Third Division in 1929.

The two merged soon afterwards, and became Club Deportivo Malaga with the unveiling of La Rosaleda stadium in 1941.

With the huge property developments along this stretch of coast in the 1960s and 1970s, money poured into the area, typified by the jet set hub of Marbella. The opening of nearby marina and tourist complex Puerto Banus in 1970, by the same Siberian architect who had worked in Beverly Hills and Acapulco, took everything to a whole new level.

Serious wealth arrived, as did serious local corruption and drug smuggling from Africa, just over the water. The coast became known as the Costa del Crime, a haven for untouchable villains from the UK, fraudulent real estate and the Russian mafia.

Malaga couldn’t fail to be caught up in it all. Once a sleepy Andalusian backwater that produced Pablo Picasso, the town became an international gateway as its airport expanded. In 1971, the CD Malaga club president was murdered, allegedly by the mafia.

The money that had brought CD Malaga to the top half of the Spanish league slowly dried up. By 1992 it had disappeared completely.

Meanwhile, a new phenomenon appeared, the Brit expat Malaga fan, by no means linked to any criminal element. Based at the Tavern Pub in Marbella, the Pena Internacional Malaguista accounted for nearly 2,000 season-ticket holders at La Rosaleda.

Club backer Sheikh Al-Thani is said to be looking at a multi-million euro development east of Marbella, a five-star rival to Puerto Banus.

Whether he can also change the fortunes of Malaga CF is another matter.

On the ground

In 1922, the original Malaga club made their first home at the beachside Banos de Carmen, where you’ll find the El Balneario bar today. This remained their base for around a decade, until plans were laid for a new stadium, north of the city centre alongside the narrow Guadalmedina river: La Rosaleda , the ‘Rose Garden’.

From an original capacity of 8,000, La Rosaleda was expanded, most notably when it gained upper tiers for the 1982 World Cup. Scotland’s 5-2 win over New Zealand and fateful 2-2 draw with the USSR were played here.

The stadium had already gained a museum and improved seating in all areas before the arrival of Sheikh Al-Thani, who soon had the VIP and technical areas revamped.

Current capacity is 29,500. Arranged in two tiers, the stadium comprises the Fondos Sur and Norte behind each goal, and Tribuna and Tribuna Presidencial along each sideline.

La Rosaleda is a 20-minute walk along the dried-up Guadalmedina from town. Bus No.15 has a stop at Avenida de la Palmilla/Campo de Futbol but doesn’t go via anywhere downtown. The No.2 runs from focal Alameda Principal to stop just the other side of the river from the stadium at two Jorge Silvela stops at either end of the arena. Here also, the Fray Domingo Pimentel stop is served by Nos.C2, 26 and 30 .

With a relatively modest capacity, tickets at the cheaper end are quite scarce. Most in the €35-€40 bracket in the Fondos behind the goal will probably be snapped up. Seats in the Tribuna along the sideline are priced 1-4 according to view, from €45-€90. The Preferencia is priced at around €60.

There are ticket offices for the Tribuna/Gol by the club shop at the south-west corner, and for the Preferencia/Gol at the south-east corner nearest the river. Advance tickets also sold via Ticketmaster www.ticketmaster.es who offer discounts for early purchases and at the club shop, La Tienda Oficial (Mon-Sat 10am-2pm, 4.30pm-8.30pm and 3hrs before kick-off) at the south-west corner of the stadium between the Tribuna and Gol stands.

Trophies, a timeline through club history and shirts through the ages in the museum are complemented by visits to the dressing rooms, the dug-out and the stadium itself, part of stadium tours (€8 adults, €4 under-18s) that take place Mon-Wed 10am-7pm, Tue-Sat 3pm-7pm.

Bars and kiosks surround the stadium. In the immediate vicinity, on the south-east corner, you’ll find the Bars Nataly and Rosaleda , as well as a number of mobile bars where fans gather before and after the game. If packed, there are a couple of venues across the river on the approach to the ground, along Calle Actriz Rosario Pino: the Cafeteria Oasis and the Meson Segalerva .

La Rosaleda Malaga Football Club Stadium Tour

Destinations, family travel.

For our family trip to Spain everyone had certain criteria of what they HAD to experience. Even if the rest of the family wasn’t 100% keen on the activity, we joined in because we knew it would be reciprocated by others.

In this case, football stadium tour hopping was one way of getting my oldest to do other activities, which he definitely wouldn’t be up for unless there was a reward like a road trip around Andalusia . In this post, I’m going to talk about LA Rosaleda Football Club in Malaga .

Malaga FC Stadium

Naturally we visited Bernabeu, Real Madrid and Camp Nou, Barca team. And right in between those two, we had the pleasure of visiting La Rosaleda, Malaga’s Football Stadium .

La Rosaleda Stadium Surprised Us

When you visit the top teams in the world, i.e. Real Madrid and Barca, you expect to see the best of the best. Since I don’t have any reference points of what football stadium tours are to be like, I would imagine they were top-notch.

However, by the time we arrived at Malaga’s Football Club we did have a reference point – Bernabeu. So I can genuinely say I can compare it to the best in the world.

And you know what?

It deserves to be in the same class.

OK, so the team itself is nowhere near as fantastic and skilled as Real Madrid or FC Barcelona, but the stadium definitely was. Minus 50,000 seats (Real Madrid can fit 85,000 people per game, while Malaga only has 35,000).

The layout of the tour was great with plenty of walks down history lane.

Visits to the lockers and press room.

What we loved most was that it didn’t feel like a huge conglomerate or business machine as the others. It was more personal.

And at the end, we preferred this one to the world’s best.

The foreign influence has increased the popularity of football over the years and there are usually local matches, where you can support or even join the team. For foreigners living abroad, a football match can be a great way to meet like-minded local people in a relaxed, yet lively atmosphere. You might learn a few choice Spanish phrases that you should check out before you incorporate them into your everyday vocabulary!

how does the spanish league system work?

The top league in Spain is the Primera División, more commonly known as 'LaLiga Santander' and the league below this is the Segunda División or 'LaLiga SmartBank', before known as LaLiga 123. These two leagues can be considered the Spanish equivalent of the Premier League and Championship in England.

After this, the 'Segunda División B' is made up of 80 teams, divided into 4 groups which relate to geographical locations. Segunda División B Group 4 encompasses those Andalucian teams that make the league.

Following on from this, there is the Tercera División (third division), made up of 18 groups of 20 teams and finally, the regional divisions.

Primera División (20 teams) Segunda División (22 teams) Primera Federación (2 groups of 20 teams) Segunda Federación (5 groups of 18 teams) Regional Divisións

promotion & relegation

At the end of the season, the bottom three teams from Premier División are relegated to the Segunda División and automatically replaced by the the top two of this division, however the third team to be promoted must first win a play off. The play off is between the teams in third, fourth, fifth and sixth position in the Segunda División.

The teams (2023/2024 SEASON)

La liga santander.

Campeonato Nacional de Liga de Primera División, officially known as LaLiga EA Sports since 2023 for sponsorship reasons (formerly La Liga Santander), LaLiga is the top men’s professional division of the Spanish football league system.

LaLiga is controlled by the Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional (LNFP) and contested by 20 teams over 38 match days each season. According to UEFA’s league coefficient rankings , LaLiga has been the top league in Europe in each of the seven years from 2013 to 2019, and has led Europe for 22 of the 60 ranked years up to 2019. This represents a better performance than any other country in that time.

Those teams in bold represent Andalucian teams. 

As can be seen ffrom the table below the 2023/24 season champion was Real Madrid with Barcelona as runners up. The bottom three teams are relegated to the Segunda division, and this season it was three Andalucia Clubs Cadiz, Almeria and Granada. The only two Andalucia teams in the 2024/5 La Liga are the two seams from Seville -  Seville FC and Real Betis .   The teams promoted to La Liga for the 2024/25 season are: Valladolid, Leganés, Espanyol.

Segunda Division

Officially known as LaLiga HYPERMOTION for sponsorship reasons (previously LaLiga SmartBank), LaLiga2 is the men’s second professional division of the Spanish football league system. Administered by LNFP, LaLiga2 is contested by 22 teams, with the top two teams plus the winner of a play-off promoted to LaLiga, and replaced by the three lowest-placed teams in La Liga division.

 The teams promoted to La Liga for the 2024/25 season are: Valladolid, Leganés, Espanyol.  The   three Andalucia Clubs were religated from La Liga down down to the Segunda division for 2024/5  Cadiz, Almeria and Granada.

There were  no Andalucian teams in the Segunda 2023/4. 

Primera Federación

The 2021–22 Primera Federación season was be the first for the Primera Federación, the new third highest level in the Spanish football league system. This replace the 'Segundo B'. Forty teams will participate, divided into two groups of twenty clubs each based on geographical proximity. In both groups, the champions automatically promoted to Segunda División and the second to fifth placers play promotion play-offs. There is a complex relegation system involving multiple groups and playoffs to determine which teams are relegated from the Primera Federation to the Segunda Federación leading to five teams from both groups tp be relegated. Of the two Groups; Group One is essentially northern Spain and Group Two is Southern and Eastern Spain.

There were seven Andalucia teams in Group Two 2023–24 Primera Federación season: 2nd Cordoba, 3rd Malaga, 8th Antequera, 13th Algeciras, 16th San Fernando  17th Linares Deportivo and 20th Granada II.  The Andalucia teams to be relegated down to the Segunda Federation were Cádiz CF B   and  RB Linense.

Segunda Federación

Segunda Federación, previously called Segunda División RFEF contains 90 teams divided into five geographical groups. The division also includes the reserve teams of a number of La Liga and Segunda División teams.

There are  ten Andalucia teams in Group Four 2024–24 Segunda Federación season. These were 1st Seville Athletico, 3rd RD Marbella, 5th Real Betis B,  6th CD Estepona, 9th Real Balompedica Linense, 12th Cadiz B, 15th CD San Roque de Lepe, 16th CD El Palo, 17th Velez CF.  The Andalucia teams to be relegated down to the Segunda Federation were Cádiz CF B   and  RB Linense.    The Andalucia teams to be promoted up to the Primera Federation were Algeciras .

After the 20 seasons in La Liga, 29 in Segunda División, and nine in Tercera División played by the now defunct CD Málaga, the current Málaga CF has played nine seasons in La Liga three in Segunda División, three in Segunda División B and one in Tercera División. They also won the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2002 and qualified for the following season’s UEFA Cup, reaching the quarter-final stages. They have also qualified to the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League, where they were quarter finalists.

Malaga Tourist Information

Málaga is a port city on southern Spain’s Costa del Sol, known for its high-rise hotels and resorts jutting up from yellow-sand beaches. Looming over that modern skyline are the city’s 2 massive hilltop citadels, the Alcazaba and ruined Gibralfaro, remnants of Moorish rule. The city’s soaring Renaissance cathedral is nicknamed La Manquita (“one-armed lady”) because one of its towers was curiously left unbuilt.

Estadio La Rosaleda is the home football stadium of La Liga club Málaga CF with a capacity of approximately 30,000. The original incarnation of the stadium opened in 1941, but the ground has since undergone three major renovations in 1982, 2000 and most recently in 2010.

Although the first match was held on the 3rd of April 1941 the inaugural match between Malacitano (Old name of Málaga) and Ferroviaria should have occurred much sooner, but didn’t due to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War delaying the project time by over 5 years.

Curiously, some regard the official opening date as the 14th of September whereby the 8,000 capacity stadium hosted a match against Sevilla in the league.

As football fever began to grip Europe and Spain, La Rosaleda was eventually expanded to a capacity of 22,000 with the addition of a new two-tiered east stand laying down the gauntlet for future renovations. The 1982 World Cup finished what the expansion of the 1960s started  with further tiers added onto the remaining single-tiered stands in addition to the pitch being lower and improvements to the exterior.

During the World Cup itself, the then 37,000 seater La Rosaleda Estadio hosted three group matches: Scotland vs New Zealand (5-2), Soviet Union vs New Zealand (3-0) and Soviet Union vs Scotland (2-2). The stadium remained unchanged for the next two decades with the next modernisation steps occurring in the year 2000.

Over the next 6 years, La Rosaleda (The Rose Garden ) once again blossomed into beautiful flower thanks to the combined efforts of architect José Segui Pérez and Sando-Vera who turned it into a bouquet of modern, commercially viable, safety-regulatory meeting, corporate facilities.

Matchday Experience

Away fans are usually housed within the upper tier of the south-west corner in an area separated from the home supporters via a section of steel fencing.

Uncovered to take full advantage of the enviable climate, views from this part of the ground are decent although the size of the area appears to be quite small compared to the away allocations of other European grounds.

As a famous and widely popular tourist destination there is plenty of entertainment on offer within the city centre and around La Rosaleda itself.

The map below outlines some of the more popular sports bars, but just by walking around you’re more than likely to unearth your own gems.

Food - Places to eat

Estadio La Rosaleda is located in an average area with a combination of residential and commercial property nearby.

Restaurants include Los Robles de Leon, Restaurante le Casa Mata and La Taberna de Juan with there being a whole bunch of options within the nearby shopping centre, Centro Comercial Rosaleda.

Can you take a stadium Tour?

Los Boquerones offer fans the chance to embark on a 45-60 minute fully guided tour of La Rosaleda which includes restricted areas such as the players’ dressing rooms, and the pitch itself. Afterwards the tour takes you to Museo Málaga CF which is a dedication to the history of the club and its numerous artefacts.

How to buy Málaga Tickets

Tickets for Málaga matches are usually either purchased Online or at Taquillas (Ticket windows) outside the stadium in the days leading up to and on the day of the match.

Price wise expect to pay anywhere between €20 for a bog standard seat behind the goals to €75.00 for a central seat near to the touchline. Of course, expect to pay a premium when the big boys such as Barca and Madrid come to town.

How to get to Estadio La Rosaleda

Where is estadio la rosaleda.

La Rosaleda stadium is located approximately 3km inland from Alboran Sea towards the North of the city on the left bank of the Rio Guadalmedina river.

If you are driving from South West then you will be traveling on the A7 motorway meaning you will have to take Exit 240, and then follow signs to the stadium after taking the first exit at the first roundabout and second exit at the second roundabout.

There doesn’t appear to be any official carparking available at the stadium which means you will have to improvise if driving. This Parkopedia page contains an excellent map of available parking spaces and their costs within Malaga.

Train - Public Transport

Malaga’s main train station Maria Zambrano is a similar distance away by foot but is on the left hand side of the river which means you would need to take a different and far less scenic route. The train station mainly serves other destinations in Spain such as Madrid (2.5 – 3 hours), Cordoba (1 hour) and Seville (2 hours) with commuter rail lines being of no assistance in getting to La Rosaleda.

As there isn’t a bus station immediately outside the station, the best advice would be to walk east across the river to Alameda Principal in the city centre where buses do depart from.

Málaga Airport officialy known as Málaga–Costa del Sol Airport is the 4th busiest airport in Spain and is the major airport for the Costa Del Sol. 8 km Southwest of the city centre. The airport now has a transportation hub outside of the newly built Terminal 3 meaning that you can easily transfer to the city centre either via Bus or metro/train line very conveniently.

The underground station opened in 2010 and services run to the city every 20 minutes or so taking 12 minutes, with the buses slightly more frequent in number, but with the trade off of journey time (30 mins).

Lastly, Taxis from the airport will set you back a minimum of €20 due to how they price journeys in the area, with both the bus and train service costing you no more than €3 for a single fare.

Hotels Near Estadio La Rosaleda

There really isn’t anything nearby to Malaga’s football stadium meaning you’re not going to be able to see the game and then literally crash out asleep 5-10 minutes later. Still as a tourist, this is probably for the best as the short 20 minute stroll southwards will not only ensure that you take in more sights.

Hotels which look alright include Salles Hotel Malaga Centro, AC Hotel Malaga Palacio by Marriott (Bit of a mouthful) and Hotel Del Pintor, but please don’t take my word for it and do your own research.
