An (unbiased) comparison of 9 top Mallorca cycling holiday/tour companies

So, you’re planning a Mallorca cycling holiday. You’ve found our host of guides to cycling in Mallorca , our GPX routes, our suggestions for where to stay.

You know you could follow them and have a great time.

But a little bit of you (or perhaps a lot) wants more support. Perhaps you’re short of time and want someone to take the hassle out of booking everything. Perhaps you want someone who can flex our routes to make them longer or shorter, or more hilly or include more coffee stops. Perhaps you want someone to offer a bit of coaching, a support vehicle, some moral support and camaraderie.

So you start to look at cycling holiday Mallorca tour options.

And it’s a nightmare! There are so many options! Which to choose?!

That’s how we felt.

So we wrote this article.

We’ve taken nine of the best known Mallorca cycling holiday tour operators and here we compare what they offer. The idea is that it lets us all see in one article the differences between each company.

We hope you find this comparison of Mallorca bike tour operators useful, and go on to have the best Mallorca cycling holidays! Let us know in the comments below!

This article includes details of services that we have used ourselves or which we would consider using. Some are paid adverts. Please read our disclosure policy for further information.

This article is based on information on each operator’s website. We were surprised how little detail was generally available (and it’s possible we missed something when preparing this article or the situation has changed since we wrote it), so please be aware that the information here is not 100% accurate. Please don’t rely on it and check direct with the operator(s).

The prices usually assume two people occupying a room. If you want single occupancy, expect to pay more. Also carefully check the trip inclusions – we’ve just summarised the situation below and the inclusions may well vary for each trip.

In November 2021 we created this article on the hidden climbs of Mallorca and this article on the best routes in Mallorca with SunVelo. We also work with Mellow Jersey, who offer women’s cycling tours in Mallorca . Neither have paid to feature in this article.

Want to know which other cycling tour operators we worked with in 2023? Read this.

This article on the questions to ask before you book a bike holiday and women’s bike tours may also be useful.

Our tips for choosing a Mallorca bike tour operator

It can be tricky to get what you want out of a Mallorca cycling holiday if you’ve never been there, so that’s why we recommend using a reputable cycling tour company. But how do you know which bike tours are best? We’ve put together a few tips below, but for a more in-depth guide make sure you read our article on choosing the best bike tour companies .

1. Check the reviews

There are plenty of cycling tour in Mallorca reviews online, make sure you read them before booking a tour operator. Make sure they’re from independent or verified guests as well. You could sink a lot of money into one of these cycling holidays in Mallorca, so do your research before booking. Also try looking up Majorca cycling holidays and reading the reviews – you’ll likely find more British reviews since a lot of Brits use the Majorca spelling.

2. Make sure you and your group agree on what you want out of the trip

There’s no point booking a Mallorca cycling tour if the rest of the group want to spend their time lounging about by the pool. Get the most out of your Mallorca cycling trips by figuring out beforehand if you want guided rides and structure to your trip, or whether you’re happy finding your own way to Puig Major.

Our conclusion

We hope you’ve found this a useful overview of the kinds of Mallorca cycling holiday operators out there and the differences between them.

Some of the biggest differences we noticed between operators were:

  • where they’re based
  • how many weeks of the year they’re based in Mallorca
  • whether they have fixed departure dates or not
  • the level to which you can bespoke your trip
  • whether transfers are included in the price or not and
  • how transparent they are on group size.

Have you used any of these companies to book your Majorca cycling vacations? We’d love to hear your experiences – comment below!

Forecast for Mallorca

Action-packed trails in the island’s north.

The Serra de Tramuntana stretches across the north-western part of the island. In the past, the tracks through the mountains were used by pilgrims. Today, the pilgrim paths have turned into mountain bike trails. However, if you decide to bike here you should be a confident mountain biker as the tracks are often blocked by boulders. Steep ascents lead through impassable terrain and require a good condition. If you want you can visit the Barranc de Biniaraix, which is considered to be one of the island’s most beautiful canyons.

In the east you can explore the hilly Serra de Llevant. One of the island’s most popular scenic roads runs in-between the jagged coast and the Serra. The hilly region and its bizarre rocks, barren hills and humid areas is ideal for adventurous mountain bike trips. Don’t forget your swimming equipment, because it is almost impossible to resist the beautiful sunny beaches.

  • Freeride at Coll des Juscons – Serra de na Burguesa
  • MTB ride from Pollença to Lluc
  • Bike ride from Esporles via Banyalbufar to Port des Canonge
  • Bike ride from Peguera via Calvià to Cap de Cala Figuera

A special characteristic of Mallorca’s trails is that some that a few of them ask for tolls as they lead through private terrain. If you don’t want to pay the toll or want to avoid biking through the maze of fences and barriers, you should take an experienced guide with you.

Day 2: Palma de Mallorca – Ses Salines Route: 63.4 km/39.4 miles Elevation: +367 m/+1205 ft Accommodation: Hotel Ca’n Bonico

Today, you’ll enjoy a beautiful flat ride to warm up your legs!

You’ll begin by cycling out of Palma and around the bay of the same name, and continue towards the southern part of the island, cycling through bucolic agricultural scenery, dotted with historic mills and farms. As you reach the sea, you’ll enjoy dramatic coastal views, historic lighthouses and military outposts, and plenty of opportunities to cool off on white sand beaches.

If you fancy a bit more cycling once you arrive in Ses Salines, you can visit the famous Platja Es Trenc, a beach renowned for its crystalline waters, or the Cabo Salinas lighthouse for fabulous ocean views.

Day 3: Ses Salines – Artà Route: 80.1 km/49.8 miles Elevation: +925 m/+3034 ft Accommodation: Hotel Casal d’Artà

On today’s route, you’ll enjoy hilly roads with very few cars, lovely landscapes and indigenous Mediterranean forests, as well as your first Mallorcan switchback climb!

You have two potential routes for today: along the cliffs of the coast, or through the flowery fields of inland Mallorca.

Just beyond the town of Felanitx, you’ll face a challenging climb up to the Sanctuary of San Salvador. From the top, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views over southern Mallorca and the Balearic Sea!

If you would like to extend today’s route once you arrive in Artà (or the start of tomorrow’s route), you can add a beautiful extra climb of about 9km up to the Ermita de Betlem for fabulous views over the Bay of Alcúdia.

Day 4: Artà – Port de Pollença Route: 42.4 km/26.3 miles Elevation: +274 m/899 ft Accommodation: Hotel Mar Calma

Today, you’ll explore the authentic Mallorcan inland before cycling along the beautiful Bay of Alcúdia, before reaching the ancient walled city of the same name. We highly recommend a stop here to take a stroll around the picturesque old town, and enjoy a fantastic lunch.

From Alcúdia, you’ll cycle along the Bay of Pollença before arriving in the popular seafront town.

Day 5: Cap Formentor Loop Route: 38.5 km/23.9 miles Elevation: +1280 m/4199 ft Accommodation: Hotel Mar Calma

Built by Italian engineer Antonio Parietti, the winding road that runs between Port de Pollensa and Cap Formentor commands astounding views at every turn. The challenging route and typical Mallorcan switchbacks are a cyclist’s dream. Away from the port, you’ll discover a rugged wilderness of great natural beauty. On a clear day, you might even see Menorca, some 40km in the distance.

Optionally, you can consider doing this ride in the evening, to watch the sun set into the ocean from the lighthouse.

Day 6: Port de Pollença – Port de Sòller Route: 89.8 km/55.8 miles OR 47.6 km/29.6 miles Elevation: +2157 m/7076 ft OR +1090 m/3575 ft Accommodation: Hotel Aimia

The pure climbing starts today! The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sa Calobra and its fabulous switchback road, one of the most beautiful routes on the whole island, prove why Mallorca is a superlative cycling paradise. Enjoy an adrenaline-fulled 10km of descent down to the crystalline waters of Sa Calobra beach. The road includes more than ten 180º turns, and even a full 360º turn known as the nus de sa corbata (the necktie knot!), in which the road passes underneath itself!

From Sa Calobra beach, you can either cycle back up to the top and continue on to Port de Sòller by bike, or take a boat from Sa Calobra to Port Sòller (boat tickets priced separately; please consult us for options).

Day 7: Port de Sòller – Estellencs Route: 43.8 km/27.2 miles Elevation: +1100 m/3610 ft Accommodation: Maristel Hotel and Spa

Today you will cycle along a coastal road with beautiful panoramic views of the north coast of Mallorca. Every village along the way is worth a stop for the different perspectives that they offer of the spectacular Sierra de Tramuntana mountain range.

Day 8: Estellencs – Palma de Mallorca Route: 74 km/46 miles Elevation: +1664 m/5460 ft Accommodation: Hotel BQ Augusta

Your final ride of the week is a stunning combination of coastal and inland cycling. The route takes you through the charming little villages of south-west Mallorca. We recommend the diversion to the picturesque coastal village of Saint Elm, a lovely spot with crystal clear water, surrounded by lush countryside.

Day 9: Palma de Mallorca Departure day

After breakfast, our tour will come to an end.

We hope you had a great time discovering the beautiful island of Mallorca.

If you need any help with your onward plans, please feel free to contact our Bike Spain Tours team!

Hotel Can Bonico

This hotel is located in the center of the town of Ses Salines, in the South of Mallorca. It is a typical Majorcan Stately house built in the thirteenth century.

Hotel Ca’n Bonico has been carefully converted and renovated into a luxury hotel. It was very important for us the fact of preserving the original structure and details. For example, the tower from the thirteenth century, which was used as a prison, has been turned into a private library. Ca’n Bonico is still owned by the Bonet family, direct descendants of the first owner, a noble knight who fought beside King James I

The trip, with the routes made by you, exceeded our expectations, the places and roads are spectacular, mixing the coast and the cities, with roads and places with a lot of tradition. The most spectacular was the Sa Calobra stage through the Serra de Tramuntana, it was spectacular, because we had a huge storm with rain and wind in the sector of Puig Mayor, which we will not forget. Very remarkable weather, despite the heat, the breeze and the effect of pedaling does not feel or make it unpleasant.

The route is very clear, and that’s the most important credit. Suggest to add more sightseeing tips and restaurants. The bikes were great! Very easy to paddle and the seats are comfortable. It was tough to ride in the heat everyday. But in the end of the day, there was always a perfect beach in the end of the day waiting for us to dive in. That was so awesome. Also, Majorcan people are generally very friendly and warm, we received lots of help on the way. I’d like to thank Bike Spain staffs, Edgar and Sabela, always giving us the help In time. A great memory.

Bike Tour Itinerary

Day 1: welcome to mallorca | warm up ride.

Tour briefing, bike fitting and warm up ride

Your cycling tour in Mallorca starts in Sineu, the island’s former capital, perfectly positioned for exploring the captivating inland regions. Sineu, nestled centrally on the island, serves as an ideal starting point to experience Mallorca’s diverse and charming inland landscapes.

One of Sineu’s standout experiences is its traditional farmers market, a vibrant event dating back to the 1300s, held every Wednesday. This market transforms the town into a festive hub, complete with locals donning traditional attire, live music (weather permitting), and an array of local products and animals for sale. It’s a cultural spectacle not to be missed, and with careful planning, your arrival could coincide with this weekly highlight, offering a unique insight into Mallorcan culture.

A swift 35-minute transfer from Palma di Mallorca brings you to Sineu, where you’ll be greeted and briefed on the itinerary, safety, and logistics. After ensuring your bike is perfectly fitted, time permitting, you can embark on a refreshing 20-40 Km loop ride. This introductory route takes you through the picturesque towns of Petra, Vilafranca, and Sant Joan, with an optional ascent to the scenic Bonany Hermitage, setting the tone for an unforgettable cycling adventure in Mallorca.

Overnight: Sineu

Included: –

Day 2: The South-East | Cycling 45/85 Km / 400/900 m

Monasteries, iconic climbs, and quiet countryside

Today your cycling adventure in Mallorca brings you to the South East, where multiple routes await. For the avid, a longer path leads to the iconic San Salvador Monastery climb. This classic ascent offers breathtaking panoramic views of Mallorca and its Eastern Coast. Challenge yourself further with the steep ascent to Bonany Hermitage, nestled near Petra.

For a more relaxed experience, choose from several shorter circuits ranging between 45 to 75 km. These routes meander through the villages of Montuiri, Porreres, Sant Joan, and Petra, showcasing the beauty of Mallorca by bike.

Overnight: Sineu Included: Breakfast

Day 3: From Sineu to Selva | Cycling 75Km/856m

Ride through the heart of Mallorca

Nestled at the base of the majestic Tramuntana Mountains, Selva is a charming village offering many cycling experiences. Whether you venture directly into the mountains, explore the Tramuntana foothills to the north and south, or enjoy the gentler, flatter landscapes inland, Selva is a cyclist’s delight.

Your bike ride between Sineu and Selava begins with a southern descent, then winds northward towards Selva, where you will stay for the next two nights. The full 88 km route unfolds through undulating countryside backroads, leading to Algaida and ascending towards the Cura Monastery. A coffee break at the summit comes highly recommended. From there, you’ll descend into the picturesque Binissalem wine region, heading towards Puig de Santa Magdalena. Here, a Pamboli lunch is mandatory. For a more relaxed ride, opt for shorter routes of 54, 65, or 75 km, each skipping one or both of the challenging climbs.

Overnight: Selva Included:  Breakfast

Day 4: From Selva to Port de Soller | Cycling 98Km/800m (easier options available)

We’re planning an early departure today with our goal being to ride to Cap Formentor Lighthouse, one of the most renowned cycling paths. It’s a dream destination for cyclists around the world.

We love to pedal with little traffic, making the early hours of the morning the perfect time to enjoy the ride. Offering breathtaking vistas of the Mediterranean Sea, this journey is characterized by its continuous ascents and descents, along with a series of twists and turns leading to Mallorca’s northernmost point.

After visiting the lighthouse, you might consider taking a scenic detour to the picturesque Cala Sant Vincent for a delightful seafood meal by the waterside.

The round trip from the hotel is an extensive 98 Km. However, we provide shuttle services to initiate your ride from Port Pollensa, reducing the distance to a manageable 65 Km.

Day 5: From Selva to Port de Soller | Cycling 70Km/2000m (easier options available)

King of the Mountain Ride

Port de Soller, nestled in a stunning valley at the heart of the Tramuntana mountain range, is a breathtaking natural harbor where the majestic mountains meet the Mediterranean Sea. This area is renowned for its succulent oranges and the exquisite Soller Red Prawns. Walking along the harbor’s waterfront, especially during a bright spring or fall evening, is a quintessential Mediterranean experience.

Your epic ride traversing the Tramuntana includes a must-see detour to the world-renowned Sa Calobra. This ride is a highlight for any cyclist visiting Mallorca and a key reason for the island’s fame in the cycling community. Your cycling day begins with the scenic ascent from Caimari to Coll de Sa Bataia and is followed by a thrilling 14 km descent from the Monnaber Tunnel, leading directly to Port de Soller. Covering 70 km with nearly 2000m of climbing, this route is both challenging and exhilarating. For those seeking a more relaxed experience, shuttle options are available. Alternatively, you can opt for a ferry ride from Sa Calobra, which conveniently brings you near your hotel.

Day 6: A day in Port Soller | Cycling/Hiking/Rest

Today offers a welcome interlude, a perfect opportunity for a rest day or a break from cycling. This is an ideal time to immerse yourself in other activities.

You can hike along the coast, leading to the charming village of Deia.

Alternatively, a short 40 km bike ride to a local winery could be the perfect outing. Here, you can have a leisurely lunch coupled with a wine-tasting session.

For adventure enthusiasts, the day could also be spent engaging in water activities such as a relaxing boat trip or a kayaking excursion along the coastline.

Overnight: Port Soller Included:  Breakfast

Day 7: The South West | Cycling 70Km/1000m

Palma: The Island’s Vibrant Capital

Palma, the island’s bustling capital, offers the perfect setting to celebrate your trip. Spend your final evening meandering through the quaint, narrow streets of the old town. You’ll discover charming bars and restaurants, intriguing art galleries, chic boutiques, and the magnificent Palma Cathedral. It’s a good idea to have the following morning to explore the city further, perhaps visiting the local municipal markets to enjoy some freshly sourced seafood straight from the stalls.

Today’s ride marks the highlight of your cycling in Mallorca, a ride we consider the best, tracing the stunning southwest coast. This route showcases the breathtaking coastal villages of Deia, Banyalbufar, Estellencs, and Andratx, culminating in Sant Elm. There, you can savor a delightful lunch at Es Moli. Post-lunch, we offer a convenient pickup service to transport you back to Palma for your final night in the city. This route provides a memorable end to your trip and ensures a swift 15-minute drive to the airport the following day. Choose between 70 and 50-km options for this scenic ride.

Overnight: Palma de Mallorca Included:  Breakfast

What our customers say about us

Cycle tour with tapas for hen party.

An amazing thing to do to see the city and get about. We did it for part of a hen party - there were 7 of us. The tour was all off the busy roads along cycle paths which was great as a few of us were nervous. We saw the coast and the beach then back around the cathedral and to the old town for some tapas tasting. Our guide was Isabella and she was fun, quirky and interesting. She always stopped in the shade where she could, took lots of photos of us and kept us safe! Really enjoyed it. Thanks!

Sherbertemma1

Chester, reino unido, brilliant bike tour.

Jorn our guide was excellent. We joined a group tour with some other tourists in September . Bikes were well maintained and when one of our groups gears were not working it was quickly changed . Helmets and baskets were available too. Very informative and great fun. Quite flat so no massive exertion required in the heat. We didn’t do the tapas tour but our fellow Tourists did and we just joined for a drink. 3 hours well Spent with good local knowledge and much better than a hop on hop off bus. Very personal and we loved the nun cookie store !

Bexley, United Kingdom

I had preconceived notions of Palma, so wasn't overly enthusiastic about having a day here on our cruise. Nothing piqued my interest in the shore excursion options and I found these guys on Viator. So glad I did. I had a wonderful day and the old town is beautiful. James was such a lovely guy and really made the tour even more enjoyable. Tapas and wine was great, so I recommend getting that added extra onto the tour. Thanks, James!!

caitlinruns

Adelaide, australia, value for money bike ride.

Bikes were in very good condition, helmets provided but we had to ask. Had a great trip with Jorn who proved to be an interesting, enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide. I'd recommend him if you get a choice. The tapas and drinks was a nice way to take a break from the ride and get to know the other riders and Jorn. Everything that is to see in Palma is covered and it's history explained. We were on and off the bikes for around 4 hours - well worth the price. You don't need to be a regular cyclist to enjoy this ride. Much of the route is on cycle paths or very quiet back streets.

angelaJ4934JY

Perfect way to see the city.

James was a fabulous guide, and he took us to the best spots in Palma, being informative every step of the way. Great personality and a lot of fun!! The bikes were in excellent shape, and when mine was just a little tweaky, he immediately made a stop and replaced it for me. We felt like natives as we discovered all of the history of Mallorca as well as the amazing architecture. The Convent of Santa Clara was a highlight, and we ended on a fun note with a drink at a local restaurant. Highly recommend this tour as a way to explore a beautiful city.

We are planning to stop the guided rides from end of June, then resume in September, apart from the special requests.

10 most interesting places in Tver Region (PHOTOS)

mtb tours mallorca

1. Catherine the Great's ‘Travel Palace’ in Tver

mtb tours mallorca

The city was founded on the Volga River in 1135. It’s 12 years older than Moscow and even competed to become the capital of Ancient Russia. Today, it is a major regional center with a population of around 414,000 people.

Travelers from one capital to the other would often stop in Tver. Empress Catherine II even had a travel palace built in Tver so as to have somewhere to rest along the way. Now, it houses the Tver Regional Art Gallery. It includes artwork collections owned by Tver governors from country estates in the Tver Governorate that were nationalized after the Bolshevik Revolution. They contain works by Alexey Venetsianov, Konstantin Korovin, Arkady Plastov, Valentin Serov, Mikhail Vrubel and other famous artists.

2. Rzhev Memorial

mtb tours mallorca

The town of Rzhev is located 120 km from Tver. From October 1941 to March 1943, some of the bloodiest battles of World War II, including the ‘Battle of Rzhev’, took place there (you can read more about the battle here ). Soviet troops lost more than 1.3 million men, including wounded, missing in action and taken prisoner.

A memorial to the soldiers who fell in the battle was inaugurated in Rzhev in June 2020. At the center of the composition is a 25-meter bronze statue of a Soviet soldier whose trench coat "morphs" into a flock of cranes. The reference is to one of the most popular and poignant songs about the war titled: 'Zhuravli' ('Cranes'). It was composed by Yan Frenkel to lyrics by Rasul Gamzatov.

3. Lake Seliger

mtb tours mallorca

Lovers of outdoor recreational activities should visit the shores of Seliger at least once in their life! This huge (260 sq. km) lake of glacial origin is home to about 30 species of fish. Hence, fishermen go there at all times of year and fish from boats, from the shore and, in winter, through ice-holes.

The winding shoreline of the lake has a multitude of different hotels and campsites (as well as glamping sites), so anyone can stay there according to their preferences. And you can jump straight into the lake from the banya (bathhouse)!

One of Seliger's landmarks is the charming town of Ostashkov, the largest on its shores.. Its key attractions include a Soviet local history museum, which is housed in a former church.

You can also take a ride on a retro train along the Seliger - Ostashkov - Bologoye route.

4. Nilov Monastery (St. Nilus Stolobensky Monastery)

mtb tours mallorca

One of the main attractions in Tver Region is the Nilov Monastery, founded in the 16th century. This functioning monastery is also situated on the picturesque shores of Lake Seliger. In Soviet times, it housed a colony for young offenders, a prisoner-of-war camp, a hospital and a tourist hostel…

According to legend, a hermit monk named Nil, famous for his diligent prayer, settled on the island of Stolobny on the lake. It was said that no calamities or robbers could force him off the island. After he died, other monks began to go to where his cell had stood and, eventually, they founded a monastery there. Before the Bolshevik Revolution, it was one of the most revered monasteries: Thousands of pilgrims used to visit it to worship the relics of the Venerable Nil. As part of the project ‘Russia: 85 Adventures’, we filmed a video at the monastery – you can watch it here .

If, in Torzhok, you've time to eat, Pozharsky's is the place to know. Their cutlets, fried, are such a treat, Then after lunch you'll lightly go!

So wrote Alexander Pushkin, who frequently traveled from St. Petersburg to Moscow to see his friend Sergei Sobolevsky. Thanks to Russia's most outstanding poet, ‘Pozharsky cutlets’ – patties of ground chicken coated in white bread croutons – became the town's most famous speciality. And they remain its calling card to this day.

But, the town is famous for more than just gastronomy. The once major trading center has, today, evolved into a charming provincial town. Things to see include the picturesque scenery along the banks of the River Tvertsa, the Saints Boris and Gleb Monastery, which is virtually the oldest monastery of Ancient Russia (believed to have been founded in 1038), and the unique, wooden 17th-century Old Church of the Ascension.

6. The flooded bell tower of Kalyazin

mtb tours mallorca

One of the region's most famous sights is the flooded bell tower of Kalyazin. The 74-meter tower protrudes out of the water not far from the shores of a reservoir. Tourists who take pictures of it are sometimes oblivious of the fact that the ruins of a once-flourishing monastery lie hidden under the water.

Most of the Makaryev Monastery of the Holy Trinity was demolished in 1940, ending up in the flood zone of the Uglich hydroelectric power station on the Volga River and the Uglich Reservoir. What remains now as a reminder of the monastery are the bell tower, which was recently restored and re-whitewashed and also a set of frescoes miraculously rescued from the monastery. You can read more about them here .

7. The source of the Volga

mtb tours mallorca

It's hard to believe that this spring and stream in the Valdai Heights are the place where one of the world's biggest rivers (and the biggest in Europe) rises. Next to the spring stand a chapel and a footbridge with a plaque – an ideal spot for a souvenir selfie!

In Ancient Rus’, the River Volga was always held in special esteem – it was described as “Mother Volga”, a multitude of towns were built along it and it provided food for a large number of Russian regions and continues to do so to this day. This is why pilgrimages have been made to its source for several centuries now. Back in the 17th century, a monastery stood there, but it burnt down and was never restored. A new one was, however, built in 1912 – the Olginsky Convent.

8. Shirkov Pogost

mtb tours mallorca

This spot on the shores of Lake Vselug (today part of the Volga River) is dubbed the "Kizhi of the Tver Region". Like the famous Kizhi on Lake Onega , Shirkov Pogost is of interest because of its multi-tiered wooden church – in this case, the church of John the Baptist, a masterpiece of Russian wooden architecture, which was built in 1697.

According to one legend, the Pogost was named in honor of the Shirkov brothers, merchants who had the church built. They were taking two icons of John the Baptist from Novgorod to Moscow. On this spot, they laid down the sacred images and decided to rest, but they could not pick them up again – and, so, decided to build a church there without using a single nail!

9. Vyshny Volochyok

mtb tours mallorca

The town got its name from the word ‘volok’ (‘portage’) – in other words, various watercraft were carried across a section of dry land between two bodies of water there. True enough, Vyshny Volochyok was on the watershed of the basins of the Baltic (Tsna River) and the Caspian (Tvertsa River, a tributary of the Volga). Under Peter I, the first artificial canal in Russia was built between the two rivers.

Vyshny Volochyok was always an important staging post on the route from Moscow (and Central Russia) to St. Petersburg. Because of its convenient location, there were many factories and production plants there, from garment factories to glass and woodwork facilities. Volochyok is also famous for the manufacture of ‘valenki’ (‘felt boots’) and it even has a museum devoted to this footwear and to the art of wool hand felting.

A host of old factory buildings, as well as houses that once belonged to affluent merchants in a great variety of styles, have survived in the town. A roadside imperial palace was also built there, which, today, houses a school.

10. Konakovo

mtb tours mallorca

Until 1929, the village was called Kuznetsovo, after which it was renamed in honor of Porfiry Konakov, a participant in the 1905 Russian Revolution. The area is famous for its china. The Konakovo Pottery Factory was founded as early as 1809 and is one of the oldest in Russia. It is no longer in operation, but local craftspeople are using the legacy of its artistic workshop to revive production today. Items can be bought as a souvenir in Tver Region.

But, today's tourists know the location more as a fashionable riviera. Konakovo and nearby Zavidovo are popular places for recreational activities and water sports. People go sailing, wakesurfing and wakeboarding and there are a multitude of hotels and glamping sites for holiday stays. And the close proximity to the M11 motorway makes the location even more attractive (particularly to Muscovites, who can get there in just over an hour!).
