Mac DeMarco

When it was time to make a new record, Mac DeMarco stayed away from the studio.

Instead, he hit the road, traveling solo from California to Canada to Chicago to Queens, New York. Along the way, he quit nicotine and made a stop at an enormous cabin in Utah, where he was “probably the only person for like 50 miles.” It was “terrifying,” he says, and he left after one night.

For this record, you went on a road trip and said you wouldn’t return home until you had an album. What was the process like in each city in terms of finding inspiration and then going out and recording the tracks?

The only thing I really thought about was what I would need in order to go out and do this for a long time. So I had gear with me and other life crap. I didn’t really have a plan. We played San Francisco and just started driving. I told a lot of my friends and they were like, [mocking voice] “Okay, man… okay!” Especially in the Pacific Northwest and the west side of Canada, I have a lot of history there. So I would just drive until I felt tired and I’d stop somewhere. It was pretty spur-of-the-moment. I didn’t even think about what it would sound like, I just hit record.

You were effectively going on tour without playing shows.

Yeah, I never went on vacation at any point in life, even as a kid with my family. Maybe once or twice. But any time I’m on tour, I have some way of recording with me, even if I don’t end up using it. I can’t do a day off. I can’t do vacation. So this is an extension of that.

You mentioned in the press release for “Five Easy Hot Dogs” that you had an awful experience in Utah, isolated in this huge cabin. What happened there?

You’re known to release demos and B-sides. Are you planning to do that with “Five Easy Hot Dogs”?

There aren’t any, really. The reason I record the demos is because across a lot of my records, I fall in love with the demos. They call it demo-itis. It’s hard to re-record something and make it feel the way it did initially. So I’m trying to streamline the way everything is captured. I don’t want to re-record anything anymore, I just want it to be what it is. Even with this record, I had my friend Rory [McCarthy] mix it, and he sent it back and I was like, “I need the mixes to be the mixes I did on the road because those are the ones I was used to. It felt the most organic.”

What did you listen to while on the road? Music, audiobooks?

I listened to a couple of audiobooks. It’s funny that the place in Utah felt like “The Shining” because I watched the “The Shining” to fall asleep like every night of this trip, which is kind of a weird thing to do. I really enjoy old video game music from when I was a kid, like “Final Fantasy.” The soundtracks even today are harmonicallly and musically very interesting. While driving to Utah, I found this song called “Had to Fall in Love” by the Moody Blues. Great song. I listened to it probably 600 times. Sometimes I listen to a little Frank Sinatra. I also would listen to the recordings I was making along the way. I’d record something in one city so it feels like that city, but listening to it on the road, the highway also kind of bleeds into the memory of that song.

Besides Utah, did you have any notably uncomfortable experiences?

I was trying to get to Chicago but there was a really gnarly winter storm and I got stuck in Fargo for a little while. I’ve driven through a lot of really horrible whiteouts, but that was one of the worst ones ever. It was just me in the middle of nowhere in a really sketchy blizzard. Semi-trucks on the side of the road everywhere, flipped over. It was terrifying. I always complain about how California has no seasons, and then it’s like, “Well, here’s winter. Enjoy.”

You said in the press release that sometimes you would walk around a city until somebody recognized you and sort of go from there. What did that typically lead to?

There were only a couple instances of meeting kids and being like, “Yeah, sure, let’s go.” I met this kid Owen on the street. This kid Connor showed me around. I’m lucky because the kinds of people that I would want to spend an afternoon with make themselves apparent. The people who just want to get a Snapchat with you, or a… what’s the one called with the front and the back?

BeReal. Yeah, they’ll take a BeReal and then piss off.

A lot of your recent work has been collaborations with other artists. Do you get a certain thrill from co-writing that you can’t get from putting out solo music?

Looking at the current state of music and music discovery, are you glad you came up before the era of TikTok, where labels are pushing artists to have social media-friendly hooks and short, replayable songs?

It’s very depressing. I think that that’s the problem is artists have slipped into this role of like, “Well, I do need those things.” You don’t… but if you want to make money I guess you do. I was always of the ilk of make what you want to make, and if money comes afterward, it’s a bonus. A lot of my songs actually do quite well on TikTok, but I never had to think about, [mocking voice] “Well this should sound pretty good sped up!” At the same time… what do people say? Get that bag, or whatever? Live your life however you want to live your life, I don’t give a fuck. But kids don’t seem to like going on tour anymore, either. Going on tour was the greatest gift of life for me. You get a van with your friends and drive around, party every night, share your music, see the weirdest parts of every city and meet other weird people. It’s like, “Would you like your life to become an adventure? Here you go.” And now people are like, “I’m so tired…” I don’t want to sound like a grumpy old uncle, but it’s strange!

That’s why making this record felt quite natural for me. It has its own weird little musical identity, and it doesn’t “slap,” it doesn’t have “bangers.” It just is what it is. I love music. I love recording music. I love listening to music. And I don’t need extra baggage to come with it. It’s a very simple pleasure of being alive. Maybe I’m waxing a little too poetic…

It’s been about a decade since “2” and “Salad Days” came out. Looking back, do you ever consider your legacy and impact on the sound of indie music?

I don’t know… I guess. It’s really cool that people still listen to those records, and some of the songs still do pretty well on the internet. It’s funny, like when kids kind of treat me like Don Corleone or something. It’s bizarre. What about all these contemporaries that were around me whom I was trying to be like? [People credit me for popularizing] red Vans and cuffing your jeans. I didn’t invent doing these things. Are you out of your fucking mind?

I’m comfortable now in my life and I have money and my health is good. I’m not really trying to climb up any ladder. I’m in a position where I can help my family if they need it. I can take care of things. That allows me to just make art that I want to make, and if the art does this or that, that’s great. But if it doesn’t, then whatever – at least I enjoyed making it.

Does it feel weird for that era to already be considered “nostalgic” music?

Are you eyeing a tour or any festivals this coming season?

We don’t have anything on the books, but I would like to do some shows for “Five Easy Hot Dogs.” It wouldn’t make sense to take it on tour, but maybe a handful of shows. Looking at the nature of touring, I don’t really want to do it the way we were doing it before COVID, which was “keep on going, keep on pumping.” I was still drinking and smoking back then, and I was starting to disintegrate. It was not good. I told myself when the pandemic happened that when we came back, it needed to be different. But then I said yes to a lot of stuff that was going to make it pretty much identical to the way it was before, and I ended up pulling the plug on some shows. But I love to play shows and meet people. Like we’ve talked about, the internet and social media has changed music and fandom and a lot of other things, but it doesn’t matter how big the show is — standing outside afterward and having some kid go, “That was awesome!” … it’s just amazing.

What else is going on in the world of Mac DeMarco?

I have become quite enamored with motorcycles over the past six to eight months. The last tour we did in August was along these coastal cities, but I did it all on this BMW sportbike. “Five Easy Hot Dogs” is kind of a proof of concept, so now I think I will shrink the recording rig quite a bit smaller so it fits on a bike. It won’t be North America next time, but keep your eyes peeled. Maybe you’ll see me on a BMW GS someone around the world.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Kids, brush your teeth.

The world’s favorite Canadian wild-child Mac Demarco continues to win over fans with his touching songwriting and enigmatic off-stage personality. Known for his laid-back energy and image, DeMarco easily appeals to the younger generation.

His relatable lyrics and unique musical sound top off his persona, making him a must-listen artist in the indie-rock genre.

DeMarco’s talents began at a young age. Living in small-town Canada allowed him to dedicate time to his growing love for music, including learning to play guitar. During high school, he joined several bands and honed his skills alongside his fellow bandmates. After graduation, DeMarco moved to Vancouver and kick-started his music career in earnest.

His rise to fame wasn’t a quick one. DeMarco worked hard to make it as a standout solo artist, releasing a variety of self-produced mixtapes, albums, and songs. Eventually, his devotion paid off when independent record label Captured Tracks offered him a deal in 2012. After signing, Demarco released the LP Rock and Roll Night Club and his debut studio album, 2. His signature sound invaded many new listeners’ playlists and paved the way for his breakthrough sophomore album Salad Days in 2014.

Tracks like “Passing Out Pieces” and “Brother” showcased DeMarco’s eccentric slacker-rock aura. By combining psychedelic and lo-fi beats, the singer-songwriter set himself apart from the usual popstars. Salad Days received stellar reviews and reached impressive heights on the U.S. charts. New fans recognized the artist’s original yet old-school take on indie-rock. Sprinkling in his knack for coming-of-age lyrics, the album became a top contender for some of the best new music in 2014. The success of Salad Days proved DeMarco was more than the everyday rocker.

The artist naturally radiated similar chill vibes during his later releases. As greats like Steely Dan, Harry Nilsson, or Prince had, DeMarco dropped Another One almost one year to the date after the meteorically successful Salad Days. Conceived and recorded entirely by himself between a relentless tour schedule at his new place in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York, Another One featured eight freshly-written songs and expanded DeMarco’s impeccable catalog.

The haunting and warm tracks of Another One delved into the bittersweet, romantic idea of lost love without subjecting listeners to an overly somber experience. Despite the album’s more refined and sophisticated sound, Another One stuck to DeMarco’s staple rock touch and playful roots while retaining the guts and soul of classic Mac.

This Old Dog and Here Comes the Cowboy carried DeMarco from 2017 to 2020. The albums expanded his record collection, securing his spot as an in-demand artist. He backed up every song with his usual persona while offering a fresh take on slow, subtle soft rock.

DeMarco supported his steady rise with must-see tours and music festival appearances at Outside Lands, Shaky Knees, and Coachella. In addition, he raised his pop culture status with late-night television performances on Conan, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. DeMarco showed no signs of stopping as he took the stage and stayed true to his casual rocker look.

With his subsequent studio album releases, DeMarco redefined indie. Retro elements and synth-inspired beats breathed new life into the genre. Today, the artist’s star power is just as prominent as his Salad Days era. Thanks to social media apps like TikTok, his new and old tracks often achieve viral status. Ultimately, his one-of-a-kind energy brings together millions of fans in fresh and exciting ways.

Luckily, his reign isn’t over yet. DeMarco recently wrapped up a world tour spanning Europe, Asia, and the US. Despite numerous canceled dates, DeMarco reassured fans he was diligently working on his upcoming LP. With more time dedicated to polishing his latest project, the singer-songwriter will undoubtedly come back better than ever. Loyal listeners are ready to indulge in the newest addition to DeMarco’s dream-worthy discography.

Live reviews

MAC DEMARCO, it's a name whose personality NEEDS to be written (and said) in ALL CAPS. If there's one thing you can expect it's entertainment. The rawest, realest form of entertainment. Mac does this immediately by managing to make the entre crowd feel at ease, at home. His show went from feeling like, well, a SHOW into a full throttle family reunion. I cannot stress the factor of "family" enough. I am now writing this in the afternoon the day after and I can still feel the goosebumps from his high trembling voice at "Still Together" which was more impactful when, before he ended the song, said "Alright, babies, maybe one more chorus. If you havent felt nothing all night, here's your shot to feel something. Are you ready?..." I can still feel the water in my eyes from when he screamed, the chorus of "My Kind of Woman" I wish I could write about his music and just the brutally honest form it takes on when he performs live BUT this review is about more than that. The stage banter between Mac, The Bassist (I feel horrible for not knowing his name but the relationship between him and Mac is something beautiful, they are always on the same page and goddamn they are funny) and the audience is what sold the show for me. Mac and Pierce McGarry (! I had to ask who the bassist was) are just the funniest mf'ers ever. I was part of an improv comedy team at one point and Mac and Pierce are guys I'd love to have on my team (After playing Ode to Viceroy <3 Pierce: What was the name of that song? Mac (in deep seductive voice): the name of that ditty was- Cigarette Song") The stage banter was amazing. At one point Mac was counting how many dudes there were at the show "3..4..i think youre a dude...7..9.. ugh yeah youre not a dude..." They are just pure entertainment. Imagine vaudeville acts who were supposed to be funny, sad, tragic just pure entertainment. MEMORABLE MOMENT (the most insane out of all ie. Mac spitting water at crowd, Mac stagediving, and much more etc) The encore was a motherf*cking NEIL YOUNG song!! Mac had all of the opening bands (Holy Shit, Meatbodies, Calving Love) and their respective family come on stage and KNEEL FOR NEIL. MAC MADE THE ENTIRE FONDA THEATRE NEIL FOR KNEEL. AND WE ALL SANG UNKNOWN LEGEND AND GODDAMN THATS WHAT LIVE MUSIC IS ALL ABOUT *SALUTES*

I love Mac Demarco! He has a great presence and plays really great live! I have one problem though, some of his fans. We waited 3 hours in the rain outside the venue hoping to get front row and see Mac up close and personal for the first time. We met some really nice people and I was overall pleased with those around us at first. We got in and got second row, right in the middle and were so so excited!! As soon as he came out guys from the back who DEFINITELY did not wait 3 hours to get those spots started 'moshing'. Not metal show moshing, it was a literal shoving pit with no regard for girls or people who didn't want to mosh. I had very respectful people behind me, but my friend, got groped by some guy probably blitzed out of his mind on coke or something. She was near tears when we finally got out and I felt absolutely terrible. I had a panic attack because I get kinda claustrophobic in chaotic situations like that. So we moved up to the balcony completely shook at what just happened. If we had known there was going to be a mosh we wouldn't have waited 3 hours and gone down in the pit. It's one thing moshing at a metal show where you expect it, but moshing to relaxing Mac Demarco music?? Weird. Anyways most of the people who waited that long and got close spots lost them at the end of the night to annoying, sweaty guys who I really, reaaallly wanted to punch in the face. But, hey, it was a learning experience I guess. Mac played great and was funny as usual. Just wish he cared a little bit more about the safety of his fans.

I think this was the best live set I've been to all year! Better than anything at the festivals for sure.

The setlist was pulled off perfectly but really it wasn't even about the songs; it was the energy!

By the fourth or fifth song, Mac and his crew has the crowd in full party mode: people were throwing clothing at the band, everyone was soaked in liquor, the beer salesman struggled to cut through the crowd and fans were climbing up on stage and jumping into the crowd.

I've never seen stuff like this at a show so small, just over 2000, unbelievable!

Mac finished as he always does, by crowd surfing through the entire venue. Then the crowd started surfing too. There were so many of us crowd surfing I had no idea who was holding us up!

When they finished their setlist, the crowd went wild for an encore. Every one of us stomping the ground, making the loudest noise of the evening. And when they did encore they played a 10-minute mashup of hardrock covers which got the crowd into possibly the largest, most gentle mosh pit there's ever been.

It was definitely something to experience, even if you're not a huge fan of Demarco. If you are then it's double down. And if you've never crowd surfed before...

If you are even considering attending a Mac Demarco concert, let me save you some time and decide for you. YOU. ARE. GOING. Not only is his music god-sent, but his show is f***ing good. Mac is one of the strangest people I have ever seen in the absolute best way possible. He made me laugh and smile about 80% of the show. The other 20% I was either moshing or contemplating my future with him (jk).

I saw him two nights in a row at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles, and both nights were unbelievable. The first night, during his crowd surf, I touched his butt *angels singing*. The second night, when he crowd surfed to the back, climbed up to the balcony, then back-flopped into the crowd, I was right below him- yes, I caught Mac.

He just makes really good connections with his audience, talking to us, making physical contact with us, jamming with us...

The other band members killed it too! I was front row and made gnarly eye-contact with the drummer, Joe. Also, I smiled and tossed up a peace sign to the bassist, Pierce, and he smiled back and gave me a head nod. AND I met the guitarist Andy after the first show.

Basically, these were two of the best nights in my life.

Moral of the story, GO SEE MAC.

Mac Demarco was the best concert I've ever been to. He's really not what you would expect from a superstar, donning a truckers hat along with an old, ratty t-shirt, navy blue sweatpants and his iconic red vans with big socks, but he's sure got the confidence to pull it off. Being at his concert feels like visiting an old friend. Between nearly every one of his jazzy, slacker rock style tunes he'll let everyone know with a hint of irony that they intend on playing another song after that last one. His show has a great summer-y vibe to it with just a hint of suspension waiting to see if he is going to do anything crazy. (He does have a bit of a reputation after his infamous interpretation of U2's Beautiful Day).

The evening with Mac consists of some Elvis Presley-esque vocals from the "Rock and Roll Nightclub" record, summer-y guitar melodies from "2" and electric keyboard ballads from "Salad Days." It is just simply a show you can't miss. I get a good feeling this is just the start of his career which I sure hope I'm right about because I can't wait to go back and see him again!

Saw him in Bristol and it was my first gig and I'll always remember it as my best. The support, Montero, was actually surprisingly good and you could tell they had tried their best. The interaction with the crowd kept everybody entertained, there would be short breaks between the songs where they would goof around and just overall increase the atmosphere. He played everyone's favourites and classics, such as 'Ode to Viceroy' or 'Chamber of Reflection'. Throughout the show, various things occurred, such as one fan throwing a can of beans at him to a rose being thrown. One of the most mindblowing tracks was 'Moonlight on the River' which captured the entire audience. The final 30minutes of the show was a multitude of covers. This was the most boring part of the show admittingly but it was still entertaining to watch and if you didn't enjoy it that much you could then leave and you wouldn't have missed their main tracks. I would definitely pay to see Mac again and will be anticipating the next time I can!

THE FORCE IS STRONG WITH THIS ONE!!!

I was never really a fan nor did much listening to him. I'd probably heard Salad days twice and knew he was a sick hobo looking Canadaian dude.

This was before seeing him this year in Montreal.

Let me tell you... the show was the best show I've been too!!

You could totally feel the comradery with him and the band. Their all a bunch of rad dudes who are insanely talented musicians. ALL INSPIRING, the lot of them!! They encouraged my friends and I to crowd surf and were frothing on the crowds excitement!

I got the chance to meet him after the gig.Honestly, Mac seems like your friend. The guys a hard core chiller. Honestly dude your talk meant a lot to me. Glad we were able to sit and talk life&music. It was great to tell you a little about my story and vis versa. You inspired me to play more guitar and find my style! That night you became a music role model for me buddy.

Thanks for the good times man! Stoked on whats happening for ya!!

This was my first Mac show, and it was also Mac's biggest headlining show. At first it didn't seem fitting that seats took up the entire venue. However, that didn't stop Mac from putting on the most amazing performance I have ever seen. His wild onstage antics mixed with his very chill songs was a perfect combination, and as he is my favorite singer, it was an absolute privilege to see him live at one of the most important shows thus far. He played a myriad of different songs of his, opening with his Beach Boys inspired track "On the Level", doing an unplugged rendition of "My Kind of Woman" in the middle, and ending the show with "Still Together" (and announcing Keira's pregnancy!), and did an encore with "Watching Him Fade Away". I brought my film camera and (hopefully) got some wonderful shots of him in action. Overall, it was an incredible performance and he kept everyone on their feet for the whole two and a half hours. Would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

I honestly can't believe I went to this show, that's how good it was.

My sister and I bagged these tickets during the summer when it was announced he'd be coming to Michigan. We were drowning in the anticipation to seeing him perform live in front of our faces, and it was wild in the best way possible. Mac brought so much energy to the stage that you begin to ignore annoying crowd mates. Singing along never felt so right. Did I mention he's fuckin good live? He's fuckin good live. He has such a unique group and there was never a dull moment while he was on the stage(or in the crowd and started climbing up to the balcony).

The t-shirts for the tour sold out, which was a tad disappointing, but the memory of that night makes up for it. I hope he makes his round again because that was a night I'll never forget. A little heads up, whenever Mac Demarco is coming to your area bag those tickets fast.

Pretty bad compared to the other concert a year or two ago (That concert was one of the best I've ever been to).

Someone got the "bright idea" of sharing their blunt with him at the start and after half an hour or so, doing somewhat decently, you could really tell it was gonna be a shit show. He started telling the same shitty (joke: "repeat after me: "we want our money back."" over and over, singing wacky covers, brought some random, nervous looking girl up on stage to sing happy birthday and made everyone feel uncomfortable as fuck. I knew it couldn't live up to last time he was here, but I was pretty damn disappointed.

TL:DR: They were on stage for 3 hours and spent less than half of that dicking around. It went from a hyped up, crowded and promising show to something I wouldn't even spent my Wednesday evening on.

Mac DeMarco has announced concerts in support of his new album, Five Easy Hot Dogs . Mac will play in New York, Los Angeles, London, and Paris, marking his first live shows since summer 2022.

Accompanied by a full band, he’ll play a more intimate set of Five Easy Hot Dogs in its entirety and songs from his catalog with new arrangements.

“Hello, Mac D here,” DeMarco said in the announcement. “In July we are bringing Five Easy Hot Dogs to the stage. Should be nice, should be different, hopefully, it will be special. Hope to see you there.”

‘take off your pants and jacket’: underneath blink-182’s enticing invitation.

Following a show in the Bay Area in January of 2022, Mac made a plan to road trip, opting to stay in motels or hotels or people’s houses, and to record in these places, too. If something wasn’t working, he would just keep on driving.

“I had my guitars with me, a bass, a weird little drum kit with a kick drum we sawed in half in Golden Gate Park, all the stands and cabling I’d need, a couple of mics, an old model D, and a TX7,” Mac says. “I wound up picking a bunch of stuff as I went as well, trying to keep it as travel friendly as possible though.”

All of the songs on Five Easy Hot Dogs were recorded and mixed in the corresponding city from each song title, and the tracklisting reflects the chronological order in which the songs were produced. “I didn’t ever have a sound in mind, or a theme or anything, I would just start recording. Luckily the collection of recordings from this period all shake hands, they have a present musical identity as a whole. I was in it while I was in it, and this is what came out of it, just the way it was.”
