Star Trek: Discovery season 4: everything we know

Spoilers ahead

The cast of Star Trek: Discovery, which is returning for season 4 on Paramount Plus in 2021.

  • Release date

Star Trek : Discovery season 4 will warp onto Paramount Plus on November 18, 2021, and a new trailer has dropped as the date gets closer.

With Michael Burnham now installed as the captain of the ship – the show's fourth commanding officer in as many years – Star Trek: Discovery season 4 will see the crew continuing to explore the distant future of the 32nd century. Having solved the mystery of the so-called “Burn” that had rendered warp travel impossible, and defeated the criminal empire of the Emerald Chain, attentions should now be turning to restoring the Federation to its former glories. Unfortunately, it sounds like a new antagonist is about to get in the way, in the form of a dangerous gravitational anomaly five light years across.

With Saru, Tilly, Stamets, Culber and all the principal bridge crew back in action, Star Trek: Discovery 4 is set to continue the franchise's ongoing adventures on the final frontier. Here's everything you need to know, but be warned – Spoilers lie ahead for anyone yet to watch the previous seasons.

Release date: Star Trek Discovery season 4 will release on November 18 in the US. The show will roll out on Paramount Plus in the US, and is expected to stream on Netflix elsewhere.

Story: With Burnham now installed as captain, as mentioned above, the USS Discovery will contend with a massive gravitational anomaly in the 32nd century – the idea is that the crew is dealing with a massive problem to solve this season rather than a specific villain.

Is there a trailer? Yes. A first teaser for Discovery season 4 debuted in April 2021, and another full trailer dropped in October 2021.

Star Trek: Discovery season 4 release date

It was confirmed at the Star Trek Day event on September 8 that Star Trek: Discovery season 4 will debut on November 18 in the US.

The show will release on Paramount Plus , the rebranded version of CBS All Access. Outside the US we expect that – like the previous seasons – the show will stream on Netflix, where it's usually available within hours of its American debut.

The previous season had barely even started airing when Star Trek: Discovery season 4 got the official greenlight on October 16, 2020. Two weeks later, on November 2, production got underway at the show’s Toronto base, and continued until August 2021 – the end of shooting was confirmed in a tweet from showrunner Michelle Paradise .

Inevitably, Covid-19 restrictions were a major factor in the shoot. For starters, as dictated by Canadian rules, the cast had to isolate for two weeks before coming to set.

Star Trek: Discovery season 4 also reportedly  took advantage of a pipeline put in place for the previous season, after coronavirus restrictions kicked in. “Our editors, miraculously and heroically, took their editing bays into their living rooms,” Alex Kurtzman, executive producer and overseer of Star Trek’s current raft of TV shows, told IndieWire . “We also scored the entire season [3], mixed the entire season, color-timed the entire season, all from [a] laptop .”

Reports suggest the process was further refined on Star Trek: Discovery season 4, with Space.com revealing that the show will make use of the groundbreaking augmented reality LED screens pioneered by The Mandalorian . Suddenly the fact that travel for location filming was off the table didn't seem quite so much of a problem...

Star Trek: Discovery season 4 cast

This is the current roll call for Star Trek: Discovery season 4:

  • Sonequa Martin-Green as Captain Michael Burnham
  • Doug Jones as Saru
  • Anthony Rapp as Lt Cmdr Paul Stamets
  • Wilson Cruz as Dr Hugh Culber
  • David Ajala as Book
  • Mary Wiseman as Ensign Sylvia Tilly
  • Blu del Barrio as Adira
  • Ian Alexander as Gray
  • Oded Fehr as Admiral Charles Vance
  • Oyin Oladejo as Lt Joann Owosekun
  • Emily Coutts as Lt Keyla Detmer
  • Patrick Kwok-Choo as Lt Gen Rhys
  • Ronnie Rowe as Lt R.A. Bryce
  • Sara Mitich as Lt Nilsson
  • David Cronenberg as Kovich

It’s a case of ‘as you were’, with most of the established cast returning for another tour of duty – presumably they’re excited to be wearing new-look, Trek-appropriate primary-colored uniforms that don’t look quite so much like tracksuits.

It goes without saying that Sonequa Martin-Green is back as Captain Michael Burnham, and even though her predecessor in the big chair, Saru, has relocated to his home planet of Kaminar, Doug Jones still has a part to play. “It felt important for all of our characters to find new layers for them, to find new place for them to go, new things for our actors to play, and new ways for the characters to go,” showrunner Michelle Paradise told TVInsider . “[In season 3 we highlighted] that Saru hasn’t had a huge connection to Kaminar since leaving, and in a season that is all about connection – family connection and cultural connection – it seemed like an organic place to explore that theme with him.”

Among the lead cast, Anthony Rapp and Wilson Cruz reprise their roles as Lt Cmdr Paul Stamets and Dr Hugh Culber, while season 3 standout David Ajala is back as the 32nd century’s most famous feline owner, Cleveland ‘Book’ Booker. (Sadly, a Grudge the Cat spin-off is yet to be announced.) And surely Mary Wiseman’s Sylvia Tilly will be looking to make the First Officer role her own.

“[Saru] sees strength in [Tilly] she doesn’t quite see in herself necessarily,” Paradise said in TVInsider. “Then, [we watched] her over the course of the season become more confident in herself to the place where she’s ultimately able to serve as Number One, and having to essentially be acting captain in this crisis situation, where she handles herself beautifully. What does that mean to come is, I’m sure, a question she’ll be asking herself and we’ll be exploring in Season 4.”

The supporting bridge crew will surely be hoping to have a few more stories of their own, continuing their slow evolution from background players to actual characters – now we know that Lt Joann Owosekun (Oyin Oladejo) can hold her breath for 10 minutes, the sky’s the limit. It’ll be interesting to see what – if anything – is in store for Lt Keyla Detmer (Emily Coutts), Lt Gen Rhys (Patrick Kwok-Choon), Lt R.A. Bryce (Ronnie Rowe) and Lt Nilsson (Sara Mitich).

Third season newcomer Blu del Barrio also returns as Adira, human host of the Trill symbiont Tal, along with their boyfriend, Gray (Ian Alexander). Dr Culber’s efforts to give Gray – who can only be seen and heard by Adira – physical form will be a big part of the season, as Gray becomes more and more integrated with the crew. “For season 4 I’ve had a lot more hands-on involvement, like my suggestions for the future of Gray,” Alexander told Inverse . “They already have so much planned. Michelle [Paradise] and Alex [Kurtzman] already have this vision that I’ve very, very excited for everyone to be able to see.”

“Culber does make a promise in our season three finale to Gray that, ‘You will be truly seen,’” Paradise said on a Discovery panel at Outfest (via TrekMovie ). “And we absolutely do pay that off in season four. That storyline and making sure we pay it off is hugely important.” It was confirmed by Wilson Cruz (Dr Culber) at Star Trek Day (via Variety ) that Gray will be gaining a corporeal form in Star Trek: Discovery season 4.

Anthony Rapp, who plays Stamets, added that Stamets, Culber, Adira and Gray will become a family in Star Trek: Discovery season 4: “Parenting – they’re not children but they are young people – the pressures of how to be available to be a mentor or guide or parent in the face of job responsibilities and sort of crises, that’s an interesting sort of sub-thread through the through the season… There’s more in the ways Paul and Hugh continue to evolve in their relationship. This is certainly explored also in this season.”

And there’ll be at least two familiar faces at Federation headquarters, where Oded Fehr (Admiral Charles Vance) and legendary movie director David Cronenberg (the mysterious Kovich) will be pulling some strings behind the scenes.

Star Trek: Discovery season 4 plot

Star trek: discovery season 4 plot: what can we expect to see.

Michelle Paradise is keeping her cards closer to her chest than The Next Generation crew at one of their regular poker games, though she did admit to TVInsider in January 2021 that the Discovery crew are hanging around in the 32nd century, rather than looking for a way back to their original pre-Kirk-and-Spock timeline. “I don’t expect that,” she said. “All of [the crew] knew going into that at the end of season 2 that this is a one-way trip. Now that they are here, we’re not looking to go back.”

What does that mean for plotlines? “I don’t want to speak specifically to themes, but we do have them!” she joked to ComicBook.com . “I think season 4 will absolutely continue the kinds of things we were doing in season 3, in that we do have very strong themes that we’re exploring. Star Trek: The Original Series explored present-day things via sci-fi. And that’s what we did in season 3, and I think that’s just baked into what Star Trek does.

“Ultimately the thing that really resonates, I think, with people is, what are our characters experiencing? What are they going through? How are they connecting with one another? What are the challenges they’re facing and how do they overcome them individually and then as a family? All of that I think will continue.”

With the Emerald Chain out of the way, it looks like the threat in Star Trek: Discovery season 4 will be rather different this time out. The trailer reveals that the crew is dealing with a gravitational anomaly “five light years across”, rather than a specific human or alien foe – a force that, as Tilly explains, “could go anywhere, and we may not have any kind of warning at all”.

“We’re actually exploring – we’re diving deep into science – in the fourth season, in a kind of new and interesting way,” said Kurtzman in a panel hosted by Deadline (via TrekMovie ). “There have been many kinds of villains over the course of Star Trek. What happens when the villain is not actually any kind of living, breathing entity, but something else? How do you solve that problem?”

Could we be looking at something technological Discovery season 2's hostile AI, Control? Or a lethal inorganic structure like the Crystalline Entity from Star Trek: The Next Generation? ScreenRant has suggested the rather plausible theory that the anomaly could be V’Ger, the rogue space probe from Star Trek: The Motion Picture. In the finale of that movie, V’Ger merged with USS Enterprise first officer Will Decker to attain a new level of consciousness – who knows what it might be capable of nearly a thousand years later...

We can expect Star Trek: Discovery season 4 to follow a similar structure to previous years, with each season based around a self-contained story arc, with just a few loose ends left untied.

“Discovery has that sort of serialized, season-long story baked into its DNA,” Paradise said in an interview with Inverse . “We also wanted to give the show a more episodic feel in season 3. We got to explore a story of the week or a villain of the week – it gives us time to explore some of our characters who we normally wouldn’t have time to explore. That was definitely a choice on our part and will continue on our show.”

Star Trek Discovery S3

What questions does Star Trek: Discovery season 4 need to answer?

With the origins of the so-called ‘Burn’ revealed – who’d have guessed it was caused by a grieving kid with a symbiotic relationship to a planet made of dilithium? – and Osyraa and her Emerald Chain defeated, Star Trek: Discovery season 4 flies into uncharted waters.

Hopefully that means that Discovery and the crew can use the spore drive to truly explore the strange new worlds of the 32nd century – though, given this show’s love of callbacks to earlier series, it’s almost inevitable we’ll meet some familiar faces and species. (The presence in the trailer of a Federation official – possibly the president – who has a mix of human and Cardassian facial features suggests that those long-standing Deep Space Nine foes may be up for a comeback, this time in the Starfleet camp.)

Part of Starfleet's remit will be rebuilding a Federation that's a shadow of what it was 900 years earlier. The trailer suggests that many worlds will have to pull together to defeat a threat that affects Federation and non-Federation “equally” – as Burnham puts it, “We are not in this alone”.

“The Federation is coming back together but it’s not fully back together,” Kurtzman told the aforementioned Deadline panel. “And so the continued mission of bringing other worlds in and meeting the criteria and standards of what it means to be a member of the Federation but also not to rob other cultures of their identity is something that we’ll explore.”

The biggest ongoing question Star Trek: Discovery season 4 needs to address is the nature of the ‘Sphere Data’, the ancient alien intelligence now integrated with Discovery’s databanks. Protecting it was the reason the ship made the one-way trip to the future in the first place, and it seems to be repaying the favor – first by helping the crew’s mental wellbeing, then by helping Tilly to forcibly eject the Emerald Chain from the ship. It’s a story that seems to be heading towards Short Trek episode ‘Calypso’, set in a distant future where Discovery is run by a sentient computer.

“‘Calypso’ is incredible,” Paradise told ComicBook.com . “And it is now a part of Trek canon , but specifically our show’s canon. It takes place many, many years beyond where our heroes are right now, and at some point, we will absolutely have to match up with that so that Discovery as a whole, including ‘Calypso’, all fits together as a piece.

“Certainly, bringing in that voice in episode four and having – we’ll call her Zora, she doesn't have a name at this point – but having her hide in the DOTs [helper robots on board Discovery] and be part of the story is the beginning of driving toward that. And eventually – who knows when? – we will absolutely have to make sure that we sync up with that.”

And then there’s the small matter of Stamets having issues with the way Burnham left his husband, Dr Culber, in a radiation-filled nebula in the season 3 finale. “I think that’s one they’ll get past in time,” Paradise said in TVLine .

Stacey Abrams and Star Trek: Discovery Cast

In the season four finale of Star Trek: Discovery , “Coming Home,” voting rights advocate and Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams makes an out-of-this-world cameo.

In only her second TV appearance following a guest spot on ABC’s Black-ish , Abrams made her Star Trek franchise debut as the United Earth president. Abrams, who has been vocal about being a fan of the shows, said in a behind-the-scenes video posted to her Twitter on Saturday that she wanted to be a part of the show, regardless of the role.

“Whatever the story was, I wanted to be a part of it because watching Michael Burnham come into her power as captain, watching this party-crew reclaim itself — not only in a new era but in a new space that is so reminiscent of what they remembered but so different — that, to me, speaks of why we do the work we do in politics,” she said. “It’s about giving people hope and giving them a better life and creating this vision of what is possible.”

Stacey abrams launches new podcast with crooked media (exclusive), 'star trek: discovery' to end with season 5.

During the three-minute clip, which also featured brief interviews with star Sonequa Martin-Green, showrunner Michelle Paradise and the episode’s director and series EP Olatunde Osunsanmi, Abrams discusses the experience of prepping for the role in terms of hair, makeup and costuming. Abrams also explained that her love for the franchise is based on the fact “that it is not one thing.”

“It is so many different shows, and it’s so many different vantage points. It has this idealized notion of what can be but a very grounded understanding of how hard the work will be to get there,” she said. “What has been so remarkable about every iteration of the show is that they take that same construct, but they do it so differently and so well that you never get bored with the journey.”

In an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment , Paradise explained how the team hid Abrams’ cameo from the public, noting that a few “precautions” were taken, though nothing drastic.

“We did take precautions on the day. Not listing her name specifically on the call sheet — normally, a performer’s name will be listed on the call sheet next to their character name. We didn’t do that in case any paperwork happened to get out,” she said. “We weren’t doing CIA-level things, but it was very important to all of us that we keep that lock[ed] down so the audience could experience that reveal in the moment.”

Paradise, who also wrote the season four finale, said that after reaching out to Abrams’ team, she agreed to a Zoom call with her and co-creator and EP Alex Kurtzman, where they pitched her the role.

“It was pretty overwhelming, I’ll be honest. Alex and I were both really taken aback,” Paradise recalled. “She was so kind and thoughtful, and just great. We were both absolutely thrilled to get to talk to her and pitch her the idea. Once she said she wanted to do it, we pinched ourselves a bit.”

As for whether Abrams might appear again, Paradise told Yahoo! that she’s “confident” Abrams will be busy with other things but that “it would be an absolute thrill to be able to do that again on any level.”

Star trek: prodigy season 2 ending & shocking season 3 set up explained, i’m glad voyager’s tom and b’elanna are no longer star trek's only successful romance.

The conclusion or cancelation of these Star Trek shows on Paramount+ puts an end to the onscreen voyages of several prominent starships. With the premiere of Star Trek: Discovery in 2017, Paramount+ (then known as CBS All Access) brought Star Trek into the modern era of streaming television. Discovery may have been met with some mixed reviews from fans, but the show proved to be a resounding success, launching another golden era for the franchise. But all good things come to an end, and Paramount+ canceled Discovery in March of 2023, announcing the fifth season would be its last.

Star Trek: Picard was only meant to last for three seasons, though the final season left fans clamoring for a spin-off. This proposed spin-off, Star Trek: Legacy, took on a life of its own, but Paramount+ has been focusing on other Trek projects. In June 2023, Paramount+ canceled Star Trek: Prodigy , removing it completely from their streaming library. Although the show found a home on Netflix for its second season, a third season remains a relatively remote possibility. Paramount+ also canceled Star Trek: Lower Decks in 2024, and its fifth and final season premieres October 24th, 2024.

Star Trek is ending series like Discovery and Lower Decks but renewed Strange New Worlds while setting up new streaming and theatrical movies.

5 USS Discovery

Star trek: discovery.

With its controversial spore drive technology , the USS Discovery is a starship unlike any other. Initially constructed to be a science vessel, Discovery became a test ship for the experimental spore drive designed by Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp). Discovery later participated in the Federation-Klingon War, eventually helping bring the conflict to an end after returning from an extended stay in the Mirror Universe courtesy of Captain Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs). Throughout Discovery's five seasons, the titular ship cycled through several different captains, including Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green).

During Discovery season 2, Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) temporarily took over command of Discovery while the ship investigated the red bursts. After the intense battle with the evil AI known as Control, Captain Burnan led the Discovery through a wormhole to the far future. Upon arriving in the 32nd century, Discovery found what was left of Starfleet and became an invaluable asset to the struggling Federation. The 23rd century ship was updated with 32nd century technology and helped Starfleet investigate the Burn, and later the Dark Matter Anomaly.

In Discovery 's fifth and final season, the titular ship embarked on a galactic treasure hunt in search of the powerful technology of the Progenitors.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 revealed the fate of the USS Discovery, as Admiral Burnham took the ship into deep space for its final Red Directive mission. As revealed in Star Trek: Short Treks season 1, episode 2, "Calypso," Discovery - and her sentient AI, Zora (Annabelle Wallis) - will spend the next thousand years waiting for a soldier named Craft (Aldis Hodge). It remains unclear why this particular mission requires Discovery to sit abandoned in deep space for so long, but Starfleet promised to return for the ship once the mission is complete.

4 USS Enterprise-G (Formerly The USS Titan-A)

Star trek: picard.

Under the command of Captain Liam Shaw (Todd Stashwick), the USS Titan-A proved vital in the fight to stop the Borg/Changeling threat to Starfleet. After receiving a desperate distress call from Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) recruited his former First Officer, Captain William Riker (Jonathan Frakes). for an impromptu rescue mission. Picard and Riker then commandeered the Titan, eventually finding themselves in an intense battle with the Changeling Vadic (Amanda Plummer) and her warship, the Shrike.

After getting trapped in a nebula and barely escaping the fight, the heavily damaged Titan limped back to Federation space, continuing their investigation into the Changeling infiltration of Starfleet. In the finale of Star Trek: Picard season 3 , the Titan-A was rechristened as the Enterprise-G in honor of Admiral Picard and the reunited Star Trek: The Next Generation crew, after they saved the day on the rebuilt Enterprise-D. The newest Starship Enterprise was placed under the command of the recently promoted Captain Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan).

Although the Picard season 3 finale provides the perfect setup for a spin-off following the adventures of Enterprise-G, the long-rumored Star Trek: Legacy appears to be dead in space.

It remains to be seen whether audiences will ever see the adventures of Captain Seven and her Enterprise , but the ship will presumably continue Starfleet's mission of exploring strange new worlds. With Commander Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd) as First Officer and Ensign Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) as a Special Counselor to the Captain, the Enterprise-G will surely have an interesting tenure. Even Q (John de Lancie) seems to be interested in at least one member of the ship's crew, as he popped in to check on Jack Crusher at the end of Picard season 3.

3 USS Prodigy

Star trek: prodigy.

After Dal R'El (Brett Gray) stumbled upon the USS Protostar at the Tars Lamora prison colony, he and his friends embarked on a series of adventures that eventually led them to Starfleet and Admiral Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew). With Janeway's help, as well as that of Captain Chakotay (Robert Beltran) and the Doctor (Robert Picardo) , Dal and his friends helped save the entire Federation. The young former crewmembers of the Protostar were then allowed to begin their Starfleet journey as cadets at the Academy.

After the success of the Protostar, Starfleet began building more Protostar-class ships, including the USS Prodigy. Equipped with a proto-drive, the Prodigy could travel considerably faster than normal warp speed, covering fast distances in a matter of seconds. When the news broke of the devastating synth attack on Mars, Starfleet scaled back their missions of exploration, focusing instead on defense. As the Prodigy was built specifically for exploration, the ship was due to be decommissioned before it even launched.

However, Janeway pulled some strings and got the Prodigy turned into a training vessel as part of a new pilot program. Janeway, Chakotay, and the Doctor then assigned Dal and the Protostar kids to the Prodigy, under the watchful eye of Hologram Janeway, acting as both an advisor and an Emergency Command Hologram. Although Dal had taken on the role of captain on the Protostar, he ceded command to Gwyndala (Ella Purnell) , choosing instead to serve as the Prodigy's First Officer. The Prodigy then departed with its young crew eager to seek out the unknown.

With the future of Star Trek: Prodigy uncertain, audiences may never see the further adventures of Dal, Gwyndala, and their crew aboard the Prodigy.

Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 brings the time travel saga of the USS Protostar full circle. Here's what happened and what it all means for season 3.

2 USS Voyager-A

After the original USS Voyager returned from its seven-year journey through the Delta Quadrant, the ship was decommissioned and transferred to the Fleet Museum. Janeway insisted that the next iteration of Voyager be equipped with state-of-the-art upgrades, including some using the technology Janeway and her crew encountered in the Delta Quadrant. In 2384, the Voyager-A embarked on its maiden voyage under the command of Admiral Janeway. Voyager's official mission was to observe the wormhole created by the destruction of the Protostar , but this was being used as a cover for the mission to rescue Chakotay.

Hidden in a secret shuttlebay on Voyager-A was a small experimental ship called the Infinity. Equipped with cloaking technology and temporal shielding, the Infinity was built specifically to travel through the wormhole and rescue Chakotay. When Dal and his friends inadvertently launched the Infinity through the wormhole too early, they significantly altered the established timeline, creating a paradox. After Dal and his crew returned with Chakotay and the Protostar, they rendezvoused with Voyager.

Janeway then commanded Voyager during the Battle of Solum, buying Dal and his crew time to launch the Protostar back into the past. After the battle, Voyager landed on Solum to initiate first contact with the Vau N'Akat. After the events of Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 , Janeway decided to retire from Starfleet, but she was soon brought back in after the attack on Mars. Captain Chakotay took over command of Voyager-A and the ship presumably joined in Starfleet's efforts to strengthen the Federation's defenses in the wake of the Mars attack.

1 USS Cerritos

Star trek: lower decks.

Under the command of Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis), the California-class USS Cerritos participated in missions of second contact and other lower-level support missions. Because the Cerritos has been involved in several noteworthy encounters, it has gained a favorable reputation among Starfleet, with some even calling it "the Enterprise of support ships." Star Trek: Lower Decks focuses mostly on the lower-level officers aboard the Cerritos, led by Lts. Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) and Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) .

At the end of Lower Decks season 1, the Cerritos was attacked and captured by Pakled ships, but rescued by the USS Titan before its crew was forced to abandon ship. Later, when Vice Admiral Les Buenamigo (Carlos Alazraqui) set up the Cerritos to promote his new automated Texas-class ships (which would render the California-class starship largely obsolete), Captain Freeman and the Cerritos crew fought back. After the AI systems on the Texas-class ships grew dangerously unstable, the entire fleet of California-class starships joined the Cerritos to stop them.

While there have been fan campaigns for other streaming services to pick up Lower Decks for more seasons, the upcoming fifth season will be the show's last on Paramount+.

As of now, the ultimate fate of the USS Cerritos remains unknown. Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 will presumably end in a way that could serve as a conclusion to the series, hopefully providing a glimpse into the Cerritos' future. It's possible another Lower Decks character could take over command from Carol Freeman or that the Cerritos could be called to participate in an important new mission. However the story of the Cerritos comes to an end, the ship and its crew remain one of the most fun additions to Star Trek's roster.

Podcast: Star Trek Status Report In 2024 Live From STLV

I have only one question for Robert Hewitt Wolfe: When does he resume writing or start producing a Star Trek show again? I am starting a GoFundMe right now if it’s just a question of money.

“That’s not how this works. That’s not how any of this works.”

I know, unfortunately. He probably has no incentive to go back. And the current leadership probably doesn’t even want anyone from the old brass. I am surprised they got Johnathan Frakes back. He is not the one to criticize anyone, but I remember he made some remarks about the Discovery show runners (first or second season) lamenting that they thought they know everything better.

The current leadership does not seem to want anyone of the original authors (from the Bermann-Bragga era) back. They discarded the fans asking for “Star Trek: Legacy” (suddenly above Kurtzman’s paygrade though they were able to listen to the fans to start with ST:SNW) by T. Matalas, now Matalas is going to work in MCU. This is a Star Trek of a new era, sadly, less to my taste.

Yes, “Star Trek” [brand] can be [extended – at least by its name/title – to] anything. But if “Science-Fiction” becomes rather a “(Ridicule) Fantasy-Fiction” disregarding or heavily-bending the canon (because they are supposed to be in the prime-universe with established canon, hence it should be treated with respect, right?), is it still “Star Trek”?

“Fantasy-Fiction” examples: 1) Extremely large interior of Enterprise in ST:Shorts episode where Spock and Una got stuck in the turbolift (the episode was a nice character piece but the interior totally broke my suspension of disbelief). 2) Rather recent preview of ST:SNW – transformation to Vulcans (incl. a sudden off-screen hairstyle change?) affecting their behavior towards seemingly more logical. This is really strange since Vulcans are trained to master their emotions, e.g. ST:VOY Tuvok recalling his childhood in one of the episodes – it required a training to make him master his emotions. Or perhaps, they were just mocking Spock and I just did not get it from the preview. 3) ST:PIC, the magic piece of technology the heroes were given on Nepenthe, never to be heard of again [or did I miss it?] because it was just a plot-device to allow writers to make their heroes depart by magically repairing the damaged ship.

Effectively basing the portrayal of the new Spock [E. Peck] on Sheldon Cooper… oh my.

ST:PIC, the magic piece of technology the heroes were given on Nepenthe

If you disliked that, blame VOY; it was a piece of technology acquired by the Borg from a Delta quadrant species.

The whole business of tptb steering well clear of proven and exemplary trek writers reminds me of the old adage about a certain group of desert dweller males who sought companionship only with virgins.. because this group of guys dreaded being compared and judged above all else.

I am not against steering from proven and exemplary trek writers provided that the new ones have enough understanding [of the “landscape”, its history and its internal (though still fictional) rules] and respect for the intellectual property [Star Trek] they work with. Many things that I have seen in post-Enterprise era indicate that at least one of the two is very often missing, IMHO.

Yes would love for an amazing talent like Robert Hewitt Wolfe to be back on this show again. Unfortunately I think his talents would be wasted since so much of NuTrek doesn’t feel anywhere near the level of the type of stories this franchise was writing 30 years ago.

I’m sure he can still write great stories but he would probably have to run the show itself like Matalas ultimately did. That’s probably the only way we would get a quality show. I don’t trust anyone who made SNW, Picard and definitely not Discovery.

Now it’s constant slapstick comedy, generic villains, treating the canon as rubbage, endless melodrama or badly written plots with everyone feeling like they are still in university.

Are you guys getting mixed between the trajector tech on the Borg ship (first seen in “Prime Factors””) and that magic wand repair device they used on La Sirena as a Deus Ex Machina?

The most unrealistic thing about Star Trek is the idea that San Fransisco would even allow entire districts of low-income housing.

The Tenderloin? The on-ramps to 101?

But is this now retconned like the Kahn rise to power in SNW? This is the ridiculousness of trying to tie near 60 years of show lore into the actual real world.🤦‍♂️

Actually I don’t think it’s reconned in the new shows because we saw a sanctuary district in Picard season 2 a few weeks before the Bell riots were supposed to happen IIRC when that crew time traveled to 2024. Also remember in that same season, Dr. Soong was shown in the last episode having a folder dealing with the Khan program. I think that’s suppose to directly tie in to what we saw with baby Khan showing up in SNW because those episodes are only a year or two apart IIRC and Soong is somehow tied to the eugenics project in the 2020s. And since Akiva Goldsman was the show runners on both shows, it looks like both the new Khan timeline and the Bell Riots just happened together.

And finally, Mariner references the Bell Riots to Boimler when they traveled back in time to the 23rd century on the Enterprise and that’s after when La’an and Kirk time traveled back to Earth; so it’s very much still part of the new timeline. But yeah a lot of time traveling going on lol.

Reference was made to deep sea mining being mentioned in “Past Tense” as a prediction that hasn’t happened.

Deep sea mining is about to become a real thing, and marine biologists and conservationists are concerned about it.

https://arstechnica.com/science/2024/09/massive-underwater-eruption-may-preview-deep-sea-mining-destruction/

I tear up every time i rewatch when Bill smitrovitch gets shot. My only complaint is that the interiors don’t look rundown enough

Great interview with Wolfe!

I actually remember when DS9 was airing and there were rumors of the upcoming season of an episode that involved Sisko being homeless in Earth’s past. It’s easily one of my favorite Star Trek episodes today and a reason I love the time travel stories so much. I was hoping Picard season 2 had a bigger tie with this episode since that show literally traveled to 2024 as well but I digress. But I learned a great deal about this episode and now can’t wait when they discuss it on the Delta Flyers.

He also gave an interview with Trek culture about the episode this week too. That one was also good but this one did a deeper dive into the episode and more details on how it got made. But he made an interesting side note about DS9 in the other interview that although the show is much more popular today than when it aired, he said in terms of streaming views out of TNG, DS9 and VOY, DS9 is still the least watched out of the three; again according to him. He also suggested that’s why with modern Trek shows we are seeing much more TNG and VOY characters showing up because those shows still get watched more and it’s probably a business decision. And I also think TNG and VOY are much easier shows for new fans to watch as their first show being more episodic and another reason they get more views. DS9 is a show you probably have to know a bit more about the universe to care about it in the beginning. But since DS9 is my personal favorite, I want to see more of those characters show up in time obviously.

It also sounds like Lower Decks is his favorite new show; which makes me like him even more! :)

But great interview. And lastly you mentioned the new Star Trek day video they released on YouTube and that they didn’t include Prodigy again. Actually there is a scene of the show in the video this year. And it’s nice that they remember the Kelvin movies are actually a thing as well. I think last year was the first time those movies were including in these videos too,

Anyway great podcast!

Thanks so much! It means a lot to know you listened to and enjoyed the whole thing.

Yes, always. I love listening to them all. And thinking about Past Tense, it’s kind of crazy to know an episode like that happened in the show’s third season and the series wasn’t even halfway over yet. In fact it was really just getting started before the Dominion War really ramped things up. It just tells you the brilliance we were getting with this show and its stories so early on. I guess that’s why I love it so much.

I do like the modern Trek shows and defend them as much as I criticize them, but I do admit we don’t get many of these types of deep stories anymore; and certainly not at the frequency we got them in the TOS and Berman era of Star Trek.

Agreed. And I was also marvelling at how “Past Tense” was a third season episode. Very ambitious so early on, and it’s always been one of my favorites.

Although a long-time Trekkie, it took me a while to accept DS9. My thought was that Trek is “the voyages of the starship Enterprise” (which, contrary to some purists of 1987, allowed for TNG), and DS9 was not that. (Nor, ironically, was ST IV, except as a bridge between Enterprises, and of course that movie is my favorite and the first I saw and a big part of what got me into Trek.)

The first full episode I saw was Past Tense Part II. That hooked me. I watched every episode after that, and of course went back and watched all the previous ones, and DS9 remains my favorite series of all of Trek. I don’t think I’ve missed one Trek episode since then.

So, thanks.
