Why Los Cabos needs to be next on your travel list

Emma Sparks

los cabos tourist board

Famed for its luxury resorts, outstanding beaches and effervescent nightlife, Los Cabos is a Mexican vacation destination made for decadence. El Arco, the key natural landmark in party town Cabo San Lucas, always draws a crowd – but there’s so much more for curious travellers to explore.

Travel writer Emma Sparks goes beyond the arch to find outdoor adventures, rich history and a wealth of natural wonders.

Emma posing on a paddle board at El Arco

El Arco: where the adventure begins

Standup paddleboarding along a picturesque Mexican coastline – how hard can it be? The answer: tougher than it looks, particularly when the waves are coming thick and fast, jagged rocks lurk in your peripheral vision and you’re being watched by an unexpected audience of booze cruisers. ‘Say cheese!’ cajoles my guide with a smile. I drop to my knees, quads wobbling, and try to look like a pro as Sergio takes a quick snap from his enviably stable kayak. Believe it or not, the crowds aren’t here for my (vastly inferior) swimwear modeling skills – they’re here for the icon behind me: El Arco.

The Arch of Cabo San Lucas sits at the southernmost tip of Mexico ’s Baja California Peninsula, a 1200km stretch of cacti-peppered deserts and craggy mountains flanked by the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez – dubbed ‘the world’s aquarium’ by Jacques Cousteau. It’s here at Land’s End that the two oceans are said to meet – a romantic and convenient notion designed to entice travelers like me, who can kayak, SUP or sail to the arch for an up-close look at the imposing granite formation, or lounge on the adjacent beaches. The 30-minute paddle from Playa Empacadora to the arch is pleasant – the water is calm for the most part – and snorkeling opportunities abound. If you’re lucky, you might even spot the resident sea lions and pelicans frolicking on the rocks.

This is a classic ‘must-see’ attraction: incredibly beautiful, and undeniably busy – even in low season. Luckily, if you want lesser-known sights and local culture, there are myriad ways to get off the beaten track.

A view of the back of a man riding a horse across arid land

Explore the wildlife and nature without crowds

60 miles northeast of the tourist corridor’s luxury resorts and bustling nightlife lies the sleepy village of Cabo Pulmo and its Unesco-listed marine park . Efforts to protect and revitalize the reef after decades of overfishing have seen much success, and (restricted numbers of) keen divers come here to spot some of the Sea of Cortez’ 6000 species; eels, rays, bull and hammerhead sharks, sea turtles, schools of jack and countless tropical fish find sanctuary in these waters – and winter brings with it the chance to spot humpback whales and whale sharks.

Inland, where the semi-arid land looks almost barren, wildlife is also remarkably abundant. Keep your eyes on the desertscape long enough and you’ll glimpse caracara falcons, scarlet-feathered cardinals, Mexican ground squirrels, wild donkeys, jack rabbits and road runners to name a few (yes, elusive coyotes live here too). The cacti are plentiful and cartoonishly large – centuries worth of green flesh and thorns sprout up from dusty soil in the form of the ubiquitous cardón cactus. The flora and fauna here thrives thanks to freshwater aquifers, palm-fringed oases and waterfalls fed by the Sierra la Laguna mountain range, which looms ever-present on the horizon.

The region’s winding dirt tracks are best explored by jeep – and hiring a guide to take you to the best off-road spots is a smart move. Maury, my High Tide excursion leader exudes genuine, infectious enthusiasm for Los Cabos and the entire Baja California Peninsula – and I soon see why. Our first stop is Santa Rita Hot Springs on the outskirts of Santiago, where natural thermal pools soothe my sore post-paddleboarding shoulders.

Next, a short and steep hike down Fox Canyon – led by a friendly Xolo pup (a hairless Mexican dog breed) from nearby Sol de Mayo Ranch – rewards us with a dreamy waterfall and cool, inviting waters, where the fish enforce free pedicures if you have the audacity to stay still for too long. These watering holes are a world removed from the crowds of Cabo, but they’re not a total secret – get here early to enjoy them in peace.

Want to up the adrenaline? Los Cabos is primed for all kinds of adventures: surfing for all abilities, horse riding, stargazing, ATV tours or even bungees. For a uniquely Los Cabos experience, join a multi-day hike through the Unesco-listed Sierra la Laguna Biosphere Reserve to see cacti give way to pine and oak trees as you scale its 7000ft peaks.

A unique culture and history

The Mayans never made it to Baja, but the region had its own indigenous peoples, including Guaycuras, Cochimí and Pericúes. The nomadic Pericúes were prevalent in Los Cabos until their demise in the 18th century due to disease and conflict brought about by European colonialists. However they didn’t go down without a fight: many Jesuit missions were destroyed or ransacked during the Pericúe Revolt in 1734, including the Mission of Santiago de los Coras. Today visitors to Santiago can see a bronze bell dating from 1721, which is rumored to have been stolen by the Pericúes, or buried by fleeing missionaries – it wasn’t rediscovered until 2004. Find out more about the region’s past at the Museum of Natural History in Cabo San Lucas.

Other missions of note include those of Todos Santos and San Jose del Cabo , but today these coastal towns are more well-known for their bohemian vibes and flourishing art scenes. Shop for Mexican handicrafts, take your pick of art galleries – Julián García Forcelledo in San Jose and Galeria Logan in Todos Santos are my favorites – or join a Thursday evening art walk in San Jose del Cabo for a cultural night out.

Sun salutations and spa days

A trip to Los Cabos wouldn’t be complete without a little luxury. Channel the likes of celebrity Cabo fan Jennifer Aniston with a yoga session at Baja Soul Yoga or Manoma and treat yourself to a stay at one of Los Cabos’ high-end hotels, where private plunge pools and world-class spas come as standard. Solaz resort ’s Ojo de Liebre Los Cabos Spa boasts a Himalayan salt igloo, chromotherapy showers and a team of nimble-fingered masseuses ready to pummel your aches and pains away – the perfect way to recuperate from days spent chasing waterfalls, hiking through canyons and posing precariously on a paddleboard.

Getting here

Flights to Los Cabos leave daily from many US destinations. Tui are launching the first direct flights from Europe (London Gatwick) to Los Cabos International Airport from November 2019.

Tourists Visiting Los Cabos Warned To Be Cautious On Popular Beaches

Travelers heading to Mexico typically choose between Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, and luxurious Los Cabos for the ultimate beach vacation.

All are incredible but are not without their flaws.

Whether it's unsightly crowds, hurricane season, or various beach hazards, expectations should always be tempered.

Right now, as travelers begin flocking for summer vacations, the city has recommended all beachgoers to remain cautious at popular beaches in Los Cabos.

This might come as a surprise since so many Cabo beaches have earned the prestigious blue flag, but sometimes Mother Nature has other plans .

That's the case as of June 14, 2024, as jellyfish have made their home in Cabo's pristine waters.

Waiving The White Flag

Travelers shouldn't necessarily give up on vacation in Los Cabos right by waiving the white flag, but that's exactly what many beachgoers will find along Cabo's shores.

Of course, like many popular beach destinations, a color-tiered flag system has been put in place to let visitors know certain risks of that particular beach.

In this case, it's one of man's most common nuisances – jellyfish.

This aquatic alien has been causing figurative headaches and literal rashes on many tourists across the globe, and now it's Cabo's turn.

White flags are posted at Medano Beach, El Corsario Beach, and Palmilla Beach , which signifies the notable presence of these spineless sea creatures.

To pile on to tourists' annoyances, yellow flags have been posted at Santa Maria Acapulquito Beach, La Ribera Beach, Hacienda Beach, El Surgidero Beach, and Acapulquito Beach, warning of strong currents.

Invasion of Medano Beach

It's not just one single sighting that gives lifeguards the green light to post a white flag. No, it's a plethora of sightings putting swimmers health at risk.

While this breed of jellyfish is no more than an annoying rash, that doesn't mean it's pleasant. Especially after splurging on one of the most expensive destinations in Mexico.

If you have Cabo in your sights, then you are probably aware of Medano Beach.

And if that's the case, then you are simultaneously aware of how un-swimmable many of Cabo's beaches are. Medano is one of the most popular for swimming due to its beauty, safety relative to other beaches, and location.

Well, that is until lifeguards decided to post a white flag at one of the most sought-after beaches in all of Mexico.

Lined with stunning all-inclusive resorts and breathtaking waters, this gorgeous beach is typically numero uno on travelers' wishlists.

Unfortunately, it may have to stay there as there is no timetable for pesky jellyfish to make their way elsewhere.

On the bright side, jellyfish are strictly marine animals, so you're perfectly safe indoors at your cushy resort with all the top amenities.

The problem is that the views are spectacular, so you may have trouble resisting the temptation to bypass the white flag warnings.

Ways To Avoid Stings

Los Cabos is stunning; there's no way around it. However, visiting the most swimmable beach in Cabo doesn't mean you have to dive right in.

There are plenty of ways to experience this iconic vacation hotspot, but perhaps no more than hiring a tour guide to take you by boat to the famous ‘El Arco' (the Arch).

Boating across Cabo's beautiful waters ensures you stay safe from one of the ocean's most bothersome animals.

Despite white flags, nobody is stopping you from hopping aboard a boat, kayaking, paddleboarding, or simply lounging in the sun.

Jellyfish can pop up anywhere in the water, no matter how shallow. It's best to take the flag warnings seriously to avoid risks of contact.

What To Do If Stung

You know where this is going…

We've all heard the old wise tales of what to do if stung by a jellyfish. You know, find somewhere private and see how good your friendship really is by asking them to urinate on the wound.

In a day and age where science has never been questioned more, this old wise tale may create more problems than solving them.

According to Health.com , rubbing cool vinegar or placing hot water on the affected area is the way to go.

Over-the-counter NSAIDs are also said to help, which is easy to keep on hand.

Low-slung buildings crafted from wood and stone are fashioned to reflect the tranquil desert palette. Highlights include a world-class spa, epicurean delights at multiple restaurants and a bevy of water and land activities to create an unparalleled experience.

And when you book through Fora, you’re treated to VIP perks like a $100 hotel / resort credit, daily breakfast credit, an upgrade and extended check-in/out whenever possible.

Luxe guest rooms, suites and Nobu residences

There are no entry-level guest rooms at Nobu Hotel Los Cabos, with the first tier Deluxe rooms coming in at an impressive 514 square feet. Spa-like, open bathrooms feature Onsen teak soaking tubs, and all rooms have outdoor space to savor the views. For a refreshing treat, guests can opt for swim-up rooms, which provide direct entry to the main pool, or splurge on a private pool with ocean views.

For larger groups, guests can experience one of the 60 Nobu residences, which range from one to four bedrooms and have an unmatched list of amenities. Think panoramic views from long covered terraces, private outdoor pools, fully equipped kitchens and dedicated personal concierge service.

Fora Advisor Rachel Meyers loves the hotel’s “zen vibes and Japanese minimalist design,”  noting that the “food at Nobu restaurant is amazing and overlooks the beach at sunset.”

Even with all these posh amenities, Nobu Los Cabos doesn’t want you to leave your best friend behind. The hotel’s pet program treats your furry friends like royalty, with pet-friendly outdoor dining, cushy pet beds, a bowl and bottled water (note: pet fees do apply).

Experience the famous Nobu Restaurant & beyond

Fans of Chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s Japanese menus will not be disappointed. Not only is there an outpost of his iconic restaurant here at Nobu Hotel Los Cabos, but it’s made even better with stunning Pacific views and dreamy outdoor seating. Signature dishes beloved the world over include rock shrimp tempura and miso black cod, while other options include spicy tuna tostadas and scallops with jalapeño salsa.

Paying homage to Cabo San Lucas, Pacific Restaurant is all about Mexican flair. Rustic-chic wood furnishings and a stone terrace give the restaurant a minimalist feel, while the menu touts vibrant flavors and tequila pairings. Try the Mexican take on a classic by ordering confit duck carnitas, or savor roasted octopus flavored with chorizo.

Two more restaurants round out the culinary offerings at this Mexican escape – Ardea Steakhouse and Muna Restaurant. Far from a traditional steakhouse, Ardea’s bold interior has a Japanese feel, while Muna’s light and airy decor match its Mediterranean offerings.

In addition to the variety of menus, Nobu Cabo San Lucas has six bars, including a swim-up bar so you don’t even need to leave the pool to sip on your favorite tropical drink. And if hunger strikes in the middle of the night, 24-hour room service is just a call away.

Mexico-style wellness for the mind, body and spirit

At Nobu Hotel Los Cabos, you’ll be able to focus on all aspects of wellness, from traditional exercise to more spiritual practices to ethereal spa sessions. In addition to a state-of-the-art fitness center, guests can participate in classes, such as yoga and pilates to improve mindfulness, flexibility and strength, as well as full-body workouts to keep active guests on track.

And after a day of exploration and frolicking in the Pacific, make sure to take time for a soothing treatment at the property’s signature spa. Gorgeous design and a variety of intriguing treatments are infused with Japanese traditions, and the vast facilities include indoor and outdoor hydrotherapy areas, featuring a cabana Jacuzzi, co-ed lounges and an open-air water circuit, plus traditional saunas and steam rooms.

Exploring Mexico: curated on-site and off-site activities

The star of Nobu Hotel Los Cabos is the fantastic coastal location in Mexico. Warm sand beaches combine with four on-property swimming pools, including an adults-only pool and indulgent swim-up cabanas. With such beautiful surroundings, it may be hard to pull yourself away from the resort, but these adventures are worth it.

To see Cabo San Lucas from a different point of view, book a private catamaran and customize your own day at sea, including dinner cruises, snorkeling excursions and even whale watching. Another water option is a larger yacht-style cruise, where you can explore the Sea of Cortez in style, while still getting a taste of adventure with the on-board snorkeling equipment and kayaks.

For land-based activities, ride through desert and mountain terrain with a guided ATV day trip, or spend an afternoon in the charming town of Todos Santos, Mexico, where a bohemian vibe attracts artisan shops and eco-friendly activities include releasing baby sea turtles.

And if you want to stay closer to home, check out pickleball, the kids’ club and the golf courses.

Insider tip: For the ultimate luxury, get in touch with the concierge to plan your unique Mexico experience. Completely customizable, this activity is tailored to your preferences, whether it’s a tequila tasting, a bonfire with fireworks or a private beach dinner.

Help! A Gas Station Charged Me $1,500 and My Bank Won’t Believe It’s Fraud.

After returning home from a wedding in Mexico, a traveler found a huge charge on his credit card and suspected a gas station attendant was responsible. Wells Fargo didn’t believe him.

A photo illustration of a person’s outstretched hand and arm. The hand is holding a silver credit card and a gas nozzle and black cord is wrapped like a snake around the person’s arm.

By Seth Kugel

Dear Tripped Up,

Last October, my extended family spent a week in Todos Santos, in Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, for a wedding. All went well, but when I got back, I noticed an unusual charge on my credit card: $1,500.49, made on the day we flew home to the United States from San José del Cabo. The merchant appeared to be a restaurant in Mexico City. I recalled that when we went to fill up the rental car at a Chevron station near the airport, the attendant placed the card in a hand-held machine and then told me it had been rejected, requiring me to use a second card. Nothing else unusual happened that day, and reviews on Google for this gas station contain eerily similar accusations of fraudulent charges from other tourists. I disputed the charge, but Wells Fargo repeatedly denied my claim, even when I asked the Better Business Bureau to intercede. Can you help? Nate, Wayland, Mass.

We cannot be sure the fraud occurred at the gas station, but if so, it’s a clever scam. The worker presumably slipped your card into a bogus card reader and charged you $1,500 just as you were rushing to return your rental car and catch a flight out of the country, knowing you were unlikely to report the crime to Mexican authorities. It’s a good reminder for travelers that we need to be ever vigilant on vacation, even when we’re cranky or tired or stressed or otherwise out of our element.

It’s also a good excuse to consider how dependent we have become on our credit card issuers to save the day in such situations. As you found out, that doesn’t always happen.

Humor me while I consider the situation from the perspective of a bank like Wells Fargo. What might seem like obvious fraud when it happens to us is not necessarily a crystal clear crime to a fraud claims team tasked with sifting out their clients who are honest vacationers from others who may themselves be fraudsters.

Since I trust you are in the former camp, I reached out to Wells Fargo and soon afterward, a representative got in touch with you by phone and agreed to refund the charge, plus interest. A week later, you received a check for $1,609.96.

“We take customer concerns seriously and seriously investigate all customer claims,” wrote Jennifer Langan, a spokeswoman for the company, in an email statement to me. “We worked directly with our customer on this matter, and it is resolved.”

But, of course, it should have been resolved earlier and without my intervention. Was there anything you should have done differently? Was there anything Wells Fargo should have done differently?

The answers are yes and yes.

Though you explicitly gave your permission for Wells Fargo to discuss the incident with me, Ms. Langan told me the company would not talk about the particulars of your case. But she did leave a clue, writing to me that Wells Fargo encourages customers to act “when they receive a fraud alert, phone call or correspondence about a transaction.”

So I asked you to look through your phone and email messages with Wells Fargo at the time of your travel, and the bank did send you a fraud alert, via text, at about the time of the transaction. You didn’t get it at the time, you said, because you had not been able to receive messages while in Mexico. And you somehow missed it when you got back home.

Though I encourage everyone to disconnect while traveling, I will henceforth recommend an exception for text messages so you can monitor your credit card transactions. (You might even consider having your bank alert you every time a transaction occurs, even if it is not suspicious, which can also be helpful in monitoring what exchange rate you’re getting.)

What happened on Wells Fargo’s end that led them to reject your claim multiple times? Though I couldn’t get specific details from Ms. Langan, we do know exactly what the Wells Fargo representative said, since you recorded the call with her permission.

The agent told you it was “normal procedure” for Wells Fargo’s fraud teams to deny fraud claims if a chip card was in the owner’s possession the entire time, which you told them it was. But technically speaking, that was incorrect: The card was briefly out of your hands when the station attendant took it and inserted in a hand-held machine at your car window.

OK, so you didn’t see the text alert and didn’t correctly parse exactly what “in your possession” meant. But given your continued appeals and the online reviews of the gas station and others in the area that corroborate your account, it’s disappointing Wells Fargo continued to be so stubborn.

The representative you spoke to conceded the team who worked on your case could have done better. “We are going to try to revise our procedures,” she said, noting that she had coached the person who made the decision on how to do “better, thorough research.”

That’s good to hear, although I’d feel more confident if I had heard it straight from an official company source rather than on a recorded phone call.

Here’s another piece of advice for travelers as mobile card readers become the default form of payment in many places: When possible, ask for the machine and to insert (or tap) the card yourself, watching the screen carefully. In much of the world (though for some reason, not in many American restaurants), the days of a merchant taking your card to the back to run it through a machine (and potentially a skimmer to steal your information) are long gone.

Though you were quite reasonably frustrated with Wells Fargo, let’s be clear here. The real villains are those who committed this crime in the first place and somehow, whether at the gas station or elsewhere, managed to charge $1,500 to a business called Comida Corrida in faraway Mexico City.

I got in touch with Grupo Horizon, which operates the Chevron Emerald gas station you went to, as well as dozens of Chevron stations in the states of Baja California Sur and Sinaloa.

Gilberto Gómez, the company’s business director, responded by email, saying he was unaware of such issues and encouraged you to send him details. “We take follow-ups to this kind of complaint very seriously and meticulously,” he wrote in Spanish. “If there is any harm to our customers attributable to the gas station, we address it.” (I’ve given you his email address and you told me you would follow up with him.)

But considering the Google reviews at this location and several other (non-Chevron) gas stations in the region, I am skeptical that Grupo Horizon is not aware of the problem. Mr. Gómez did not respond when I followed up twice about whether he had seen the Google reviews.

I also got in touch with the Los Cabos Tourism Board. When its managing director, Rodrigo Esponda, got back to me, he said he was “deeply concerned about the situation,” and had spoken to the Baja California Sur state attorney’s office, which told him it was investigating the matter. He also recommended that tourists who have complaints about a business in the region should register them with Mexico’s federal consumer protection organ, Profeco.

In the meantime, could the solution simply be to pay cash at Cabo-area gas stations? Alas, no: There are also reports of gas station attendants switching out large bills customers pay with for smaller ones and demanding more. And don’t even get me started on the Tripped Up complaints that come about the poor customer service travelers encounter in car rental agencies near Mexican beach destinations. The best solution for sun-seekers may be to skip the car rental altogether and hire a driver, use car-share services or take public transportation.
