Cruise port Porto Malai – Langkawi – Malaysia: docked

Shuttle services

Most cruise lines offer a shuttle service to the nearest beach (Cenang beach) or town. Please check with the front office on board if this will be the case for your cruise.

There are plenty of taxis available at the Langkawi cruise dock. Official taxis are red and taxi vans are white coloured. There are usually also a handful of taxis at the cruise dock. These taxis are usually more expensive than the ones waiting for you at the exit of the port, which is around 200 yard walk. Negotiate a price before you step into the taxi. A taxi to the city centre usually costs around 80-100 RM one way. Taxis vans also quite commonly offer their “shuttle” service to the Cenang beach for just a few dollars per person.

Local Currency

The local currency is Ringgit Malaysia (RM). Please keep in mind some places take US dollars, some do not. There is usually a currency exchange facility at the dock. Your cruise ship might also offer exchange services for this currency.

If you would like to visit one of the many islands surrounding Porto Malai you can do this by organised shore excursion. Alternatively you can arrange an excursion in port at one of the local tour operators at Resort world Langkawi. You can also find some local boats who are more than happy to take give you a tour of the islands. You can find them just outside Resort world Langkawi. Find their exact location in the map above. These boats are about a 10 minute walk from the dock.

Beaches near the cruise terminal

There is a small beach just outside Resort World Langkawi at 10 minutes walking distance. This beach has no facilities and we couldn’t really recommend is. The nearest beach with facilities is Penang beach.

Interactive world cruise map, home | cruise ships | port expenses | hints and tips, langkawi malaysia cruise port guide.

The Star Cruises jetty, where many big cruise lines dock , is about eight miles west of Kuah. There is effectively no public transport on the island, so your choices are to use taxis or to rent a car, motorbike/scooter, or bicycle. If you've booked a tour, the buses meet you right at the dock to start the excursion. There are no facilities at the jetty.

If your ship will use tenders you will be dropped off in the center of town. Star Cruises has priority using the dock.

Tip: don't hire a taxi near the ship. Walk to the far end of the pier and negotiate there. Many more taxis and much cheaper.

Sightseeing:

Off the coast of the state of Kedah is a cluster of 99 islands with the best of many worlds - beautiful beaches, world-class infrastructure, mangroves rich in flora and fauna, ultra-cheap duty-free shopping and fascinating legends. Langkawi has a lingering legend woven into its history. Ask anyone in Langkawi about the tragic legend of a beautiful young lady named Mahsuri, and you will hear a tale of love, jealousy and a curse she placed upon the island for seven generations. Today, the seventh generation of Langkawi's inhabitants has long come and gone, but the locals still believe that the prosperity and blessings the islands enjoy today and the passing of the curse is not mere coincidence. The mysticism of this legend can be felt in many parts of this island, especially at Makam Mahsuri (Mahsuri's Mausoleum) where the famous legendary figure is said to be buried. Langkawi is not only geared towards tourism. Many of the islands are populated by farmers, fishermen and entrepreneurs. Experience the beautiful countryside and the peaceful landscape of paddy fields by renting a car and taking a leisurely drive around the island. Some of Langkawi's most rustic and memorable views are along the road that circles the island. You will pass small villages with wooden houses framed by palm trees, and children riding their old bicycles on an errandAside from experiencing the local lifestyle, there is no shortage of activities in Langkawi. Head up the thrilling new cable car to the summit of Mount Mat Cincang - Langkawi's second highest mountain - for an unrivalled view of the entire main island and beyond.

You can also visit the Field of Burnt Rice, the Hot Springs, Rubber plantations, Telaga Tujuh (The Seven Wells) and the Beach of Black Sand. Boat tours are organized to Tasik Dayang Bunting, (Lake of the Pregnant Maiden), Gua Cerita (Cave of Stories) and the Gua Langsir (Curtain Cave). And if you are more outdoorsy, why not trek through the pristine rain forest that blankets most of Langkawi, go on a boat tour of the mangroves, go diving, or play a round of golf at some of the 5-star resorts. Langkawi also has an underwater world which has garnered rave reviews, complete with an underground tunnel that runs though a giant aquarium.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Sharing a taxi is a good option here, especially if you want to go on the cable car.

The beach is wonderful in Langkawi. Loungers are about 10 Rinngit to rent.

It pays to compare your cruise line excursions : Tours etc. offered by GetYourGuide and by Viator .

The Malaysian currency is the ringgit.

ATMs are widely available in cities, but do stock up on cash if heading out into the smaller islands or the jungle. Credit cards can be used in most shops, restaurants and hotels, although skimming can be a problem in dodgier outlets.

Tipping is not customary in Malaysia. However, hotel porters and taxi drivers will appreciate a small tip if you have been provided with exemplary service. Most expensive restaurants, bars and hotels may indicate prices in the form of RM19++, meaning that sales tax (5%) and service charge (10%) will be added to the bill.

Pulau Langkawi Island (Malaysia Kedah)

Cruise port schedule, live map, terminals, news.

Pulau Langkawi Island cruise port

Region Asia

Local Time 2024-09-18 12:33

Port Pulau Langkawi Island cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Pulau Langkawi Island, Malaysia Kedah. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Langkawi Island is part of an archipelago consisting of a total of 104 islands in Andaman Sea, approx 30 km (20 ml) off mainland Malaysia (northwestern coast). The islands are part of Kedah state (adjacent to Thailand's border). The largest of the islands (Palau Langkawi Island) has population around 65,000 and is the only other inhabited isle - except Tuba. Langkawi is also the archipelago's largest town, and is a free port (duty-free zone).

Island's agro-based economy of rubber and paddy cultivation and fisheries is being overtaken by tourism, taking into consideration the unspoiled beauty and governmental emphasis. On June 1, 2007 Palau Langkawi was awarded a World Geopark status by UNESCO. 3 of its main conservation regions in Langkawi Geopark include Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest park (Island of Pregnant Maiden Lake), Machincang Cambrian Geoforest Park and Kilim Karst Geoforest Park. These three parks are the major tourism area within Langkawi Geopark. UNESCO issued a 'yellow card' warning in 2014, threatening the Geopark's status. In 2015 the Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark status had to be renewed, of which upon inspection by appointed Geopark Inspectors, Langkawi was issued a Certificate of Membership dubbed Green Card by Asia Pacific Geoparks Network, under auspices of Global Geopark Network (GGN).

Tourists can enter Pulau Langkawi Island via ferry from Penang , Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis. Or by domestic flight from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL), or Subang Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SZB). International connection is available from Singapore and Guangzhou-Nansha .

Langkawi Cable Car takes cruisers up to Gunung Mat Chinchang peak, where Langkawi Sky Bridge is situated. In 2012 the Sky Bridge was closed for maintenance and upgrading, but opened again in February 2015, even though work on it is still ongoing. The beginning of the cable car ride is located in Oriental Village where there are several attractions, including the Art in Paradise, a 3-Dimensional art museum.

In 2018, TUI Group (one of the world's largest tourism travel companies with 1600 travel agencies globally) homeported in Langkawi ships to promote Malaysia fly-cruise deals with packages inclusive of direct flights from 3 UK airports - Birmingham, Gatwick and Manchester. The arriving from UK flight cruise tourists spend a day in Langkawi prior to boarding on 14-day voyages with itineraries visiting ports Penang, Port Klang (Kuala Lumpur), Melaka, Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand. The promo fly-cruise program was for the period December 20 (2018) through March 29 (2019). TUI brands with homeported in Langkawi ships are Hapag-Lloyd, Marella Cruises (UK) and TUI Cruises (Germany).

A view of the mountains near Port Malai Langkawi in Malaysia

Porto Malai, Langkawi, Malaysia

While some 99 islands make up the Malaysian archipelago of Langkawi, Pulau Langkawi, the largest island, is the destination where cruise ships call (at Porto Malai) and where ferries and flights arrive from Malaysia's mainland, just 30 kilometers (19 miles) to the east. The lush island lies just south of Thailand in the Andaman Sea and is home to roughly 95,000 people. There's an excellent infrastructure of hotels, international and Malayan restaurants and eco- and adventure attractions that make Langkawi a paradise for visitors looking to enjoy beautiful beaches served up with the exoticness of a Southeast Asian vacation.

Scuba divers flock to the area to explore the Andaman Sea's colorful coral reefs, just offshore. If you would rather stay dry during your marine exploration, you can visit Malaysia's largest aquarium. Spend your days exploring the beautiful coastline, shopping for traditional batik goods (the entire island of Langkawi is a duty-free destination) or just sipping a cold drink under the shade of a palm tree. And don't miss the chance to ride a cable car high above Langkawi's jungle canopy to the top of Mount Machinchang for the island's most spectacular views.

Top sites & attractions for cruises to langkawi, eagle square.

Eagle Square, also known as Dataran Lang, is one of the top sights in Kuah, the main town on Langkawi island. The square is home to a towering eagle statue that greets visitors as they come into port and symbolizes the region’s close relationship to nature and these mighty raptors. Eagle Square has a great walking area lined with miniature fountains, bridges, and terraces, and offers visitors great views of the Kuah Bay and the forested islands beyond. You’ll also find small souvenir stalls to browse here.

Pulau Payar

This island lies in the Straits of Malacca about 20 miles south of Langkawi and is the perfect getaway for a day trip while on a cruise. The island is famous for its vivid coral reefs, where divers and snorkelers can look for moray eels, clownfish, grouper and barracuda in the protected marine sanctuary. There are also incredible nature trails on land at Palau Payar, where dense rainforest frames sandy beaches lapped by turquoise and blue waters.

Langkawi Sky Bridge

The Langkawi Sky Bridge is a 410-foot cable-stayed bridge that wraps like a snake above the treeline at the peak of Mount Mat Cincang (Gunung Mat Cincang). The bridge deck sits at a height of over 2,000 feet above sea level and offers unprecedented views of the island’s rich green forests, coastline, and villages. To reach the Sky Bridge, you’ll ride the thrilling Langkawi Cable Car from the base station at the Oriental Village shopping center down below.

Learn More About Asia Shore Excursions

Things to do in langkawi, tour the langkawi mangrove forest.

The Langkawi Mangrove Forest, also known as the Kilim Geoforest Park, features a dense mangrove forest, multiple lagoons, and pristine beaches. Take a boat tour through emerald green waterways and learn from local experts about the park’s biodiversity, conservation, and history. The park is extensive, and you’ll be able to explore bat caves, observe snake habitats, and look out for monkeys scampering through the trees. You may also catch a glimpse of majestic kite eagles or white-bellied fish eagles as they perch on branches or swoop down on their prey.

Try Watersports at Pantai Cenang

Pantai Cenang is one of the most lively beaches in all of Langkawi. Go for a fun and fast jet-ski around the shores of this stunning white sand beach, or take a banana boat ride with friends. If you really want some thrills and spectacular views, try paragliding high above the surf and seaside treeline, then lie out on the beach with a refreshing tropical cocktail. There are also guided snorkeling tours available for both beginners and experts, and fascinatingg underwater sea life you can observe nearby.

Hike Around Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls

If you’re looking for more of an active adventure while on a cruise to Langkawi, try a nature hike around the Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls. These falls are fed by seven different sources on Mount Mat Cincang and culminate in a stunning cascade of water that pours down magnificently shaped rocks. The Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls are located in the rural western section of the island, near the Langkawi Sky Bridge. To reach the falls you’ll need to do a short hike (around 20 to 30 minutes), so make sure to bring comfortable shoes.

Top Food and Drink Near the Langkawi Port

Local food in Langkawi embraces many traditional Malay spices and flavors with an emphasis on fresh fruits, fish, and curries. You’ll also find many international food options near the Langkawi port, including good Chinese food, Thai food, and BBQ. Make sure to try classic local dishes like nasi lemak, consisting of fragrant coconut milk rice cooked in a pandan leaf, or pajeri nenas, a pineapple curry made with star anise and ginger. This is the tropics, so try a refreshing water chestnut juice or an ice-cold Tiger beer between stops as you tour the island on a cruise to Langkawi.

Culture & History of Langkawi

Langkawi is known as an island of legends, and its history and culture both reflect this in lore, architecture, and art. For many years, the island was ruled by the Islamic Sultanate of Kedah, and later by the British during the colonial period of the early 20th century.  Langkawi was briefly ruled by Thailand, although its Thai influence and cultural roots go far beyond that. Modern Langkawi’s culture is marked by a focus on maritime commerce and tourism, and it is one of the busiest and most visited islands in Malaysia, for good reason.

Langkawi Port Facilities and Location

Langkawi’s cruise ship jetty is located just under 10 miles southwest of Kuah, the island’s principal city, on the southwestern tip of the island. This is really just a point for embarking and disembarking your ship, with easy access to shuttles and taxis at the terminal. You can also get to Kuah and many of the surrounding islands via ferry if you wish.

Transportation in Langkawi

Public transportation isn’t always reliable in Langkawi, but this shouldn’t be an issue thanks to an abundance of other options. Tour buses and taxis will meet you right at the dock, and you can also rent a car or motorbike. Taxis have fixed rates. When driving, be diligent and mindful about local traffic laws and often chaotic roads. As it’s hot and humid year-round, don’t overestimate the amount of walking you might want to do. There are bicycle options in some areas, and bikes are a great way to get around the boardwalk on the waterfront area near the terminal.

Shopping Near the Langkawi Cruise Port

There are many great shopping options available on cruises to Langkawi, with great duty-free offerings as well. You’ll find lots of popular international brands at the Langkawi Fair Shopping Mall, or Jetty Point Complex next to the Kuah Jetty and Eagle Square. For more of an artisan shopping experience, head to the Atma Alam Batik Village, a batik textile factory with a showroom that features exquisite, authentic textiles, bags, paintings, purses, and more.

Local Currency & Tipping Options

The local currency in Langkawi is the Malaysian ringgit, and cash can be withdrawn fairly easily from numerous ATMs spread throughout the capital of Kuah and other popular tourist towns. Cards are accepted by most restaurants, hotels, and major tour companies. For smaller merchants and taxis, it’s recommended to use cash. Tipping, as in the rest of Malaysia, is not customary, but small tips for restaurant servers, hotel staff, and tour guides are always appreciated.

BURO’s Staycation Guide: Find the perfect weekend escape to match your personality

BURO’s Staycation Guide: Find the perfect weekend escape to match your personality

If you’re yearning for a refreshing escape, why not consider a local paradise that offers sunny skies and breathtaking views of both sea and land? Langkawi , with its pristine beaches, lush landscapes, and crystal-clear waters, is the perfect destination. Opting for Langkawi instead of venturing overseas not only provides a convenient and cost-effective getaway but also immerses you in a serene environment where you can breathe in the crisp, clean air and recharge your senses. Whether you’re exploring its natural wonders or simply relaxing by the crystal-clear waters, Langkawi promises a rejuvenating experience that rivals any far-flung destination.

The next question is likely to be, “What is there to do in Langkawi?” Well, everything!  Witness stunning views from land, sea, or sky, delight in exceptional food, unwind by the pool or beach, seek out adventures, and revel in the comfort of your luxurious accommodations—all on the very same island. We were recently invited by the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) to experience firsthand all that this rejuvenating destination has to offer. We’ve also got to witness the introduction of Langkawi International Tourism Engagement (LITE), a campaign set to place Langkawi on the map once more as the premier island destination, celebrating its breathtaking landscapes, elegant lodgings , thrilling activities, and extraordinary experiences.

Here we’ve done the hard work by planning the perfect 4D3N Langkawi itinerary. All you need to do is — well, go!

Brunch at the Smiling Buffalo

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Smiling Buffalo LANGKAWI 🐃 (@smilingbuffalolangkawi)

Hello! Welcome to Langkawi! Before heading straight to your hotel, consider stopping by for a quick breakfast, brunch, or lunch—depending on your arrival time. Smiling Buffalo is a charming café that serves some of the best Western cuisine on the island. With a diverse menu ranging from hearty American-style breakfasts to mouthwatering sandwiches and tempting small bites like fries and wings, there’s something for everyone. Plus, this spot is incredibly Instagram-worthy.

Check-in: The Westin Langkawi Resort

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by The Westin Langkawi Resort (@westinlangkawi)

To start, we recommend checking in at The Westin Langkawi for an exceptional stay. Renowned as one of Langkawi’s most prestigious hotels, The Westin Langkawi provides spacious, luxurious rooms suitable for all types of travellers with the best views of the Andaman Sea. Guests can also indulge in exceptional dining experiences at any of the four on-site restaurants and enjoy outstanding service from the attentive staff. As the 5-star resort sits on a private property, its strategic location goes unnoticed with just being minutes away from shopping malls and the jetty so travelling around the island will be a seamless journey.

Head straight to Heavenly Spa

There’s no better way to kickstart your trip, especially after long hours of travel than with a rejuvenating session at The Westin Langkawi’s Heavenly Spa. Renowned for its ‘heavenly’ massages, the Heavenly Spa has a wide range of services that can cater to any of your needs—whether it’s a quick massage to relax sore feet or a deep-tissue sports massage to release sore muscles and aches. Why not go all out and have a facial as well while you are there? Restore that mind, body, and soul of yours before kicking off your adventure on this pristine island.

Explore Dream Forest

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Dream Forest Langkawi (@dreamforest.langkawi)

As night falls, you have the option of calling it a night after a good hearty dinner at one of the many local restaurants situated around the hotel but why stay in when you can embark on a magical journey at Langkawi’s newest attraction? The Dream Forest invokes a captivating experience for all ages, especially children. This enchanting night walk features mystical flashing lights and multi-sensory activities, including immersive sounds, that bring the magical tales of Tasik Dayang Bunting, Merong Mahawangsa, and the Giants of Langkawi to life. It’s a delightful and immersive experience that will cap off your first night in Langkawi perfectly.

Go on a nature trail at Kubang Badak

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Kubang Badak Geopark (@kubangbadak)

Rise and shine! Now is the time to really dive into the nature of Langkawi. After a fulfilling breakfast at the Westin Langkawi, pile on that sunscreen, wear your little bikinis, and off you go! While you can enjoy the island’s popular beaches, that’s alright but we highly suggest hoping on a trail at Kubang Badak. One of the island’s newest geoproduct projects, the trail tour has 13 sites with interesting stories about the natural history of Kubang Badak. You can choose from its many tour options, whether to include hiking as part of your journey, or just enjoy the speedboat ride around the trails and let the guide bring you through its rich history of humans, culture, geology and biology.

Watch the sunset from a cruise

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Avante Yacht Charters (@avanteyachtcharters)

Don’t leave the island without experiencing a sunset cruise! Renowned for its stunning views, it’s the perfect way to end your second day at Langkawi, immersing yourself in the serene beauty of nature while you sail into the evening. Avante Yacht Charters provides enticing packages for both private and shared yachts. On board, you’ll get to enjoy free-flow food, and drinks and participate in recreational sports activities such as kayaking, swimming, or go ride in the speedboat. It’s another perfect way to end the day! Dancing until the sun goes down.

Check-in: Temple Tree Resort

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Temple Tree Resort, Langkawi (@templetree_langkawi)

With so many luxurious accomodations on the island, we recommend elevating your experience by checking into your next destination: Temple Tree Resort Langkawi . We may often say this but this resort is indeed unlike any other. Where you’ll be unwinding and restining for the night are at its Heritage Houses, each with its own history, culture, and character. The houses were built decades ago, now revamped and equipped with air-conditioning and luxurious amenities. There are a total of seven houses, a good mix of shared and private houses so you can book the entire property for yourself and your loved ones. Located strategically just 10 minutes away from the airport and Cenang Beach, we can’t think of anywhere else but here to spend the last night of your trip.

Lunch at The Danna Langkawi

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by The Danna Langkawi Resort & Beach Villas (@the_danna_langkawi)

The Danna Langkawi is another prestigious gem on the island, and before you continue your journey, we highly recommend dining at their casual restaurant, Planter’s. This casual eatery offers a delectable menu inspired by both local and European cuisines, featuring specialities like rendang and satay. Whether you choose to visit for lunch or dinner, you’ll be treated to a scrumptious spread that complements the breathtaking backdrop of the resort’s pool, which overlooks the stunning Andaman Sea.

View Langkawi from above at Sky Bridge

Time to call it a night

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Paloh Restaurant & Bar (@paloh_templetree)

After an adventurous day, especially on the final night of your trip, we recommend relaxing and enjoying a meal at Paloh Restaurant & Bar, the exclusive dining venue at Temple Tree Restaurant. Here, you can savour a delectable array of authentic local cuisines that will leave you wanting more with every bite. The restaurant and bar serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and transition into an evening hotspot with a variety of drinks, allowing you to wine and dine well into the night.

Until next time, Langkawi!

It’s day four—time to head home! As you pack your suitcases, we hope there’s some room for duty-free shopping. Langkawi has been a duty-free island since the 1980s, offering a wide range of products like chocolates, liquor, cosmetics, bags and more. You’ll find numerous duty-free shops scattered across the island, with popular ones like The Zon conveniently located near Cenang Beach. You can also choose to shop at the airport. Shop till you drop, and then head home with a smile!
