Salt river overview, salt river az tubing trips no way — this is a white water rafting adventure.

Arizona’s  Salt River  has unique characteristics not to be missed. Not only are the rapids exciting with world class river-rafting action, Salt River rafting features stunning biological diversity and breathtaking grandeur.

The Salt River is a non-regulated, free-flowing river that is dependent on snowpack. Run off is in the springtime, from late-February and through early-May on an average snow year. We raft commercial trips on the Salt River during run off only , and the season length can vary depending on how much snow the river basin receives. If you have any questions, at any time of year, regarding the Salt River – please don’t hesitate to contact us!

Choose from short white water rafting trips of just a day to longer rafting trips of up to five days. Many Phoenix and Tucson residents join us each spring on our most popular trip – a full-day rafting adventure starting near the Highway 60 bridge between Globe and Show Low. To fully explore the canyon, with its beaches, unique geology and huge variety of plants, animals and bird life, consider an overnight whitewater rafting adventure of two to five days. Come see why the Salt River Canyon is one of the Southwest’s hidden treasures.

Salt River Rafting rapids are rated class III and IV. The Salt River drops an average of 25 feet per mile for over 50 miles through rocky, secluded canyons. It flows through oak and juniper woodlands down into stunning Lower Sonoran Desert vegetation, with giant multi-armed saguaro cactus and a diversity of other vegetation. Several side canyons reveal oasis-like microhabitats that are a lush reprieve from the prickly cactus environment. Excellent scenic riverside campsites are abundant and accessible only by raft.

Salt River Rafting - Corkscrew Rapid

Salt River Rafting

Trip length, who it's for.

Class IV: for experienced & beginner paddlers. Minimum age 12

GATEWAY CITY

Meeting location.

Arizona’s Upper Salt River is virtually unknown outside of a loyal group of river runners. However, it is one of the most spectacular and unique wilderness rafting trips in the country.   The combination of exciting and abundant whitewater, wilderness solitude, world-class camping, the desert sun in spring, and granite inner gorges that cut through the exotic Saguaro Cactus forests of Arizona’s Sonoran Desert, makes it like no other river trip on earth. Often referred to as ‘Arizona’s other Grand Canyon’ the Salt can more than hold its own with its famous neighbor.

A note from Pete about the Salt:

salt river rafting trips

The Salt was the first wilderness river trip I ever did. It was done as part of my first guide school and has a lot to do with why I am still guiding. From almost the start of Momentum as a company, showing people the Salt was on my radar. Twenty years later we were finally able to make it happen and we couldn’t be more excited.

As with all of our trips we will run the Salt with innovative and comfortable wilderness camping and creative menus featuring local and organic produce & products. And they will be guided with our extremely experienced, friendly, and humble guides.

It is a truly special river, and it has a special place in my heart. I hope we have a chance to show it to you.

Kind Regards, Pete Guide/Owner

The Salt begins 150 miles east of Phoenix high in the White Mountains, draining melting snow off of 11403’ Baldy peak, Arizona’s second highest mountain. Below the peak the White and the Black rivers merge to form the Salt, the largest river entirely within Arizona. From there the river tumbles through the lands of the White Mountain Apache Tribe and San Carlos Indian Reservation and into Tonto National Forest and the 32,100-acre Salt River Canyon Wilderness. Along the way it cuts through the transition zone between the Colorado Plateau and the Basin and Range Region, exposing 1.4 million year old granite, some of the oldest rocks in North America.

Very few rivers still flow through the Saguaro forests of the Sonoran desert, and the wilderness section of the Salt is the only one with raftable flows and whitewater. The trip begins in oak and juniper woodlands and then cuts through rugged mountains dotted with stately saguaros and past meadows carpeted with blooming purple, yellow, red, and white cactus and desert flowers. Side creeks regularly enter with cool shaded pools, waterfalls, and slot canyons and washes to explore. Seeing the Sonoran desert by river in all its spring glory is an incredible experience.

The whitewater on the Salt is a big part of its uniqueness and overall quality. There is whitewater every day and in the first 37 miles, rapids come one after another with a frequency that is rare on a desert wilderness trip. The stretch begins with 14 miles of exciting but more mild class III whitewater as the Salt carves through a mostly sedimentary canyon. At mile 14 the Salt enters the first of three narrow granite gorges, the whitewater intensifies, and for the next 23 miles there are Class III and IV rapids every day. The whitewater climaxes in an ancient, dramatic, and jagged quartzsite canyon, at the infamous Quartzite Falls and Corkscrew rapids. In these rugged bedrock chasms the Salt shows its unique combination of boulder-strewn rapids reminiscent of California’s Sierra Nevada alongside the stunning scenery of the desert Southwest.

The desert camping is world-class, with beautiful sandy beaches, cool shaded side creeks, or a rich combination of both. The camps all offer hiking and opportunities to explore the hidden, shyer aspects of desert life. And the trip is done with Momentum’s signature style, attention to detail, and handcrafted quality. With comfortable and innovative wilderness camping, creative menus, personal service and hospitality, one of the most experienced (and friendly) guide staffs in the world, and with all the little touches we are known for. Our Salt trips also feature a higher guide-to-guest ratio, allowing us to run the river at a wider range of flows and adding to the overall comfort and experience.

Despite draining the wettest part of the state (3 to 4 times the precipitation of Phoenix) the season on the Salt is early and unpredictable, and average seasons are rare. But in good snow years from early March to late April, when other places are still digging out of the snow, the Upper Salt offers warm sun, the twinkling desert skies, and some of the most unique early season rafting anywhere.

For those who have joined us on other trips, the whitewater is somewhere between the Rogue and the Illinois in difficulty. And, while the area is remote and the whitewater is exciting, participants do not need to be experienced adventurers or athletes, or to have spent a night under the stars to join us. First timers with an adventurous spirit, in reasonable physical condition, who are excited to see one of America’s most unique river canyons are more than welcome.

For more than 50 spectacular miles, the upper Salt river canyon offers the rare combination of deep solitude, thrilling whitewater, and Sonoran Desert beauty. Join us in a journey through a land of Gila monsters, Javelina, and bighorn sheep; granite inner gorges flanked by crumbling sedimentary mountains; blooming ocotillo, palo verde, and desert flowers; classic whitewater; cool quiet pools and tumbling waterfalls; all watched over by the warm desert sun and the mystical and stately giant saguaros  – the benevolent sentinels of the Sonoran Desert.

Main Salmon

For any family looking for one of the premier river adventures in the U.S. the Main Salmon should be on the list.  Big splashy class III and IV rapids, mixed with smaller whitewater and placid pools mean this trip has all the excitement one could want without having too much.

Hells Canyon

Hells Canyon is the deepest canyon in North America, and is filled with thrilling whitewater, arguably some of the biggest rapids in the Pacific Northwest.

Lower Salmon

The Canyons of the Lower Salmon River are filled with fun whitewater rapids and enormous beaches that rival any tropical destination.

Selway River

The Selway River is simply one of the most exclusive river adventures in the U.S.  One of the most remote and wild commercial river trips in the U.S. the Selway only has one launch per day (private or commercial) and has a comparatively short season from mid-may until the end of July.

Middle Fork of the Salmon

The Middle Fork of the Salmon River is the quintessential river trip. It begins as a small stream near 6000 feet above sea level at Boundary Creek and drops nearly 3000 feet before meeting the Salmon River near Cache Bar.

Find A River Adventure

The first commercial river rafting trips in the United States were launched in Idaho. Idaho outfitters always have been leaders and standard-setters for this industry.

Idaho also has more places to go river rafting. No other state can claim as many recreational river miles as Idaho. The American Whitewater Affiliation counts more than 3,100 whitewater river miles in the state.

Outfitters offer rafting trips of all kinds for all ages and abilities. Families enjoy fun excursions on rivers such as the Main Salmon, the North Fork and Main Payette Moyie, and the St. Joe. Sightseers like quiet flat-water floats on rivers such as the Clearwater, the Boise River and the Snake in the Snake River Birds of Prey Area. Whitewater seekers go for the Middle Fork of the Salmon, Hells Canyon, the Lochsa, Selway, Bruneau, Jarbidge, South Fork Payette, or Snake River, Southern Idaho. Idaho outfitters take care of everything on these trips. Guides row the rafts or lead guests in paddling their own. They provide tents and waterproof gear bags. They cook all the meals, including salads made from fresh fruits and vegetables and Dutch-oven baked breads and desserts. They lead games on the beach and around the campfire.

Most Idaho river rafting companies carry inflatable kayaks along on their trips for the enjoyment of their guests. Guides provide instruction.

By Far Our Best Experience!

“We have been white water rafting on many rivers in many states. This is by far our best experience. We had Erin as our guide and she was knowledgeable AND patient with us. She really knew the river.”

Far Exceeded Expectations!

“The best experience! Far exceeded expectations! First time rafting and the guides were helpful and informative. Not only were they experts in training but had the best lame river jokes. Stayed entertained throughout. The photos and commentary were great too. Will definitely be back!”

Slide title

I’ve now done this full day adventure trip twice because I love it so much. When I had some friends visiting me from out of town it was the first thing I scheduled. What really makes it so good is the quality of the river guides. They’re so good at what they do; you feel safe while they create a super fun atmosphere for the trip. And the rapids are no joke.

What is your weather policy?

Arizona Rafting trips run rain or shine. Daytime highs in the Sonoran Desert are typically mild with highs ranging from 65 to 90 degrees. Can we bring alcoholic beverages?

Drugs or alcohol are not to be consumed before or during your trip. This includes marijuana. Marijuana remains illegal on White Mountain Apache Tribal Lands and US Forest Service Federal Land. No refund will be given to those drinking alcohol or using drugs prior to the trip.  On multi-day camping and rafting trips, alcohol may be consumed while at camp. Please remember that rafting trips operate in a very remote area with difficult access for emergencies. Try to avoid glass containers.

Can I participate if pregnant?

We do not allow guests who are pregnant to participate in rafting. The safety of you and your bun in the oven is our top priority.

Will I receive a safety orientation prior to my trip?

Prior to boarding your raft, you will receive a complete safety orientation.

Is it appropriate to tip my guide?

Tipping is appropriate, particularly if you have received exceptional customer service. Our guides are high quality service workers. A tip of 10 – 15 percent per guest is customary. You will have the opportunity to tip your guide directly at the conclusion of your trip.

We always appreciate hearing from you so that we can recognize extraordinary customer service, and we also appreciate hearing from you if you feel that there are areas that we can improve upon. We strive to exceed your expectations!
