23 Magical Things to Do in Istanbul at Night: An Istanbul Nightlife Guide

No trip to Istanbul is complete without exploring the city’s amazing nightlife.

21 Magical Things to Do in Istanbul at Night: An Istanbul Nightlife Guide-2

Where to Stay in Istanbul

Turkey - Istanbul - Hammamhane

The lovely Hammamhane – my top pick for where to stay on an Istanbul city break

If you’re planning on spending a lot of time out at night, you’ll want to make sure you pick accommodations that are easy to get to after dark and have twenty-four-hour reception in case you get home closer to dawn than midnight.

Accommodations in Istanbul offer a great value compared to other cities in Europe. Here is a general range of what we mean by each budget category:

  • Budget:  A room in a hostel, usually $5-12 USD per night for a dorm bed or under $40 for a double.
  • Mid-range:  Around $40-80
  • Luxury : Around $100 per night or more

Budget:  For a great budget-friendly hotel, you can stay in the single or double rooms at the  Dreamers B&B . Colorful and cozy, the B&B boasts a fabulous location in Beyoglu, less than a kilometer from Taksim Square. You can explore all of Beyoglu from here, and then head to Sultanahmet when you’re ready to see the old city.

>> Check pricing, reviews, and availability here. <<

Mid-Range:  For an affordable, yet trendy boutique hotel, we recommend  Peradays . It’s perfect for all Istanbul visitors, from first-timers to Istanbul veterans. The lofted rooms are generously large, so you can spread out and relax after a long day of sightseeing. They also have two cats that live here, Pera and Daisy, which you’ll be happy to greet after counting cats all day when out in the city.

Luxury:  Istanbul has no shortage of fabulous hotels, but we love   Hammamhane , a boutique apartment-hotel that was originally a hammam, and the sister hotel of Peradays. Built in a historic hammam (Turkish bath), the suites are spacious and luxurious. Located in the heart of Cukurcuma, the antiques district, Hammamhane is within walking distance to art galleries, design stores, antique shops, and chic cafés.

Still can’t decide? Check out our guide to the best Istanbul neighborhoods and hotels.

The Best Things to Do in Istanbul at Night

Here are our favorite Istanbul nightlife activities, in no particular order…

Enjoy a Turkish Bath

Turkey - Istanbul - Turkish Bath Hammam

If a long day of sightseeing has you exhausted, why not spend your evening relaxing at a Turkish bath? I truly can’t think of a better way to wind down than getting scrubbed and massaged in a five-hundred-year-old hammam!

There are dozens (possibly hundreds) of hammams across Istanbul, so you can choose a historic one, one near your accommodations, or even go for the  most Instagrammable one.

If you want to have everything arranged before you go, you can  book your Turkish bath ahead of time  for the Çemberlitas Bath. I’ve been to this one and I can vouch that it is completely and utterly relaxing. Plus it was built in the sixteenth century, which is so cool to think about.

Pro Tip: Book your Turkish bath here and then grab dinner afterward at the cheap and tasty falafel restaurant next door.

Explore Arnavutköy Nightlife

Turkey - Istanbul - Wooden Houses of Arnavutkoy

While I personally love Arnavutkoy for the traditional Ottoman houses and delicious fish restaurants, it’s actually one of Istanbul’s nightlife hubs.

My favorite bar in Arnavutkoy is Alexandra , a cocktail bar which *almost* makes Turkey’s inflated alcohol prices worth it. You can also check out the nearby Luzia, an intimate bar with a craft cocktail menu that makes a great place for a romantic evening in Istanbul.

Cruise the Bosphorus at Sunset on a Private Yacht

Turkey - Istanbul - Istanbul Bosphorus at Night - Canva

A lot of people choose to do their Bosphorus cruise during the daytime. While that’s an excellent activity, you can save it and go at night instead. For a truly spectacular way to enjoy the Bosphorus, choose a private yacht cruise of the Bosphorus at sunset.

You get to see mosques, palaces, and bridges while enjoying Turkish drinks and sea breezes. And of course, your sunset pics will help you remember the evening for the rest of your life.

Cruise with Dinner & a Show

Turkey - Istanbul - Istanbul Bosphorus Dinner - Canva

If you want a bit more entertainment on your nighttime cruise, you can opt instead to take a dinner cruise that includes a dancing show.  You’ll still get to enjoy the sunset, but you’ll also eat a buffet dinner and enjoy a show with traditional dancing and Turkish music.

Dine on Mezze & Raki

Turkey - Istanbul - Raki and Mezze - Canva-2

We love Turkish food (don’t tell the rest of the Balkans, but Turkish food and Greek food are our two favorite regional cuisines here). And one thing they have in common? Mezze!

What’s a mezze? Well, according to Wikipedia , mezze (or meze) is a common meal that consists of multiple snack-size plates (think Balkan tapas).

In Turkey, meze often consist of  beyaz peynir  (literally “white cheese”),  kavun  (sliced ripe melon),  acılı ezme  (hot pepper paste often with walnuts),  haydari  (thick strained yogurt with herbs),  patlıcan salatası  (cold eggplant salad),  beyin salatası  (brain salad),  kalamar tava  (fried calamari or squid), midye dolma and  midye tava  (stuffed or fried mussels), enginar (artichokes),  cacık  (yogurt with cucumber and garlic),  pilaki  (foods cooked in a special sauce),  dolma  or  sarma  (rice-stuffed vine leaves or other stuffed vegetables, such as bell peppers), arnavut ciğeri (a liver dish, served cold), octopus salad, and  çiğ köfte  (raw meatballs with bulgur).

In Turkey, this meal is an especially social affair, with food eaten slowly over a long period and accompanied by generous servings of Turkish raki, a white anise-flavored liquor (not to be confused with Balkan rakia/rakija which is more akin to delicious battery acid).

Go on an Istanbul Pub Crawl

Turkey - Istanbul - Raki - Canva

While I didn’t get the change to do the Istanbul pub crawl, I’ve done them in Sofia , Plovdiv , and Berlin, so I can confidently say that I looooooove a good pub crawl.

The Istanbul Pub Crawl last seven hours, so you’ll have tons of opportunities to ask your guide for recommendations and to get to hang out with the other people on your tour.

Organized pub crawls are a great way to make some friends, and they’re great for solo travelers and couples looking to enjoy an evening but also get in some good conversation with other people (since traveling for a long time with just one other person or solo can feel a bit isolating at times).

On this pub crawl, you’ll visit three different bars, including some secret local hotspots. The tour also includes a free shuttle to help you make sure you get to the meeting point to start.

Smoke a Bit of Shisha

Turkey - Istanbul - Shisha - Canva

While you can find great Hookah bars all over the Balkans, there is something special about smoking shisha in Istanbul – though you should call it a nargile instead of a hookah when you’re in Turkey.

You can enjoy flavored shisha, like mint and apple, or go for the traditional stuff that’s straight tobacco. I personally am a bit partial to watermelon shisha.

Looking for the best spots to enjoy this Ottoman tradition? Here’s an overview of the best Hookah bars in Istanbul.

Dine at Mikla

Turkey - Istanbul - View from Mikla

Mikla isn’t exactly a hidden gem (it’s been voted one of the best restaurants in the world multiple times), but it’s worth the hoopla. Make a reservation if you want to dine (or come exactly at six to enjoy a cocktail). You’ll be greeted by this amazing view and a modern take on Turkish cuisine.

Make sure to ask your server for local wine suggestions as their selection of Turkish wines is excellent.

Take in a Whirling Dervish Show

Turkey - Istanbul - Whirling Dervish Show - Canva

You might have heard some singing Austrian nuns proclaim that Maria von Trapp could “throw a whirling dervish out of whirl,” but do you know what a whirling dervish is? In Istanbul, you can come to see for yourself!

While in Istanbul, take in a Whirling Dervish show.  There are many spots you can see this in Istanbul, but the show at the HodjaPasha Culture Center has won awards as one of the best authentic local events in the city.

What happens at one of these shows? According to HodjaPasha:

Watch the mystical ritual of the Mevlevi Order, whose whirling dance has been declared a UNESCO Heritage of Humanity. The Sema ceremony is a journey through man’s spiritual ascent to “perfection” through mind and love.

Chill in a Former Beer Factory

The historic beer factory in Bomonti was recently restored and turned Bomontiada , into a killer nightlife complex that includes trendy restaurants, art galleries, and even a concert hall. Highlights include Delimonti, a grocery store featuring food from cities all over Turkey, and the restaurant Kiva, which features local cuisine and live entertainment.

Leave time to explore the art galleries and brewery. The great think about Bomontiada? It’s still relatively undiscovered by tourists, so you can get a taste of Istanbul nightlife the way some of the city’s trendiest locals enjoy it.

Appreciate Ortakoy Mosque at Night

Turkey - Istanbul - Hobo Kitchen

You can’t miss seeing Ortakoy Mosque at night (it’s one of our favorite Istanbul Instagram spots ), but it’s also worth it to drop by the neighborhood at night to see the mosque all a-glow.

You can see it from the ground (obviously), but for a fun twist, head upstairs at Hobo Kitchen to enjoy cocktails and animal fries with your mosque views.

See the Glowing Fountain in Sultanahmet

istanbul nightlife tour

Most likely you’ll stroll through Sultanahmet during the day, visiting the Hagia Sophia, Basilica Cisterns, and the Blue Mosque during daylight hours. However, if you find yourself in the area at night, enjoy the festive atmosphere and beautiful fountains all alight.

Snack Away on an Evening Food Tour

Turkey - Meze Turkish Food - Pixabay

You’re unlikely to have a bad dining experience in Istanbul (it’s nearly impossible to choose wrong), but if you’re looking to learn about the history and tradition of Turkish cuisine, then join an evening food tour.

There are several to pick from, including this full evening dining tour , this  evening walk & tasting tour,  and even a f ood tour of Kadikoy.

Shop at the Grand Bazaar

Turkey - Istanbul - Grand Bazaar - Pixabay

If you run out of time to see the Grand Bazaar during the day, you can stop by in the early evening since it’s open until 7 pm Monday through Saturday.

Afterward, you can enjoy a meal at one of the restaurants in the area. Just try to steer clear of any restaurants aimed at tourists!

See the Bosphorus Bridge Light Up

Turkey - Istanbul - Bosphorus Bridge - Canva

I absolutely adore watching the Bosphorus at any time of day, but if you have a thing for modern feats of engineering, check out the Bosphorus Bridge after dark! The lights are stunning. Bonus if you happen to be in town over a holiday (like Republic Day on October 29th) when you can see the bridge and fireworks at the same time!

Go on a Personalized Photo Shoot

Turkey - Istanbul - Ortakoy Mosque at Sunset - Canva

If you’ll be in town celebrating a special event like a honeymoon or engagement (or even if you just want to up your Istanbul Instagram to another level) you can book a private photographer to capture special moments from your trip!

While most will choose to book this during the day, you can always arrange to get that beautiful golden hour and sunset glow by scheduling your shoot in the evening!

Take an Istanbul by Night Tour

Turkey - Istanbul - Blue Mosque at Sunset - Canva

If you will be short on time during your trip but you still want to see the best of Istanbul, go on an evening tour of the city!  While you won’t get to see all of the traditional spots, you’ll still get an amazing feel for the city plus a taste of traditional Turkish dance!

See the Maiden’s Tower at Sunset

Turkey - Istanbul - Maidens Tower - Canva

If you’re looking for the most beautiful sunset sights in Istanbul, you could do a lot worse than checking out the gorgeous Maidens Tower. If you’re in town over the weekend, you can even tour Maidens Tower from 8:15 pm until midnight, which makes it one of the biggest tourist sites in Istanbul to be open at night!

Stroll Istiklal Caddesi

Turkey - Istanbul - Istanbul Trolley

One of the most famous avenues in Istanbul, it’s a great way to see just how big Istanbul is since it’s visited by over 3 million people Every. Single. Day.

Come here to shop, socialize, eat, drink, be merry, but more than anything else, come here to people watch. A WHOLE LOT OF PEOPLE watch.

Hang out in Galata

Turkey - Istanbul - Galata Tower Stephanie

The area around Galata Tower is a great place to hang out in the evenings. Cafe Privato has an excellent Turkish Breakfast, but they also have fantastic Georgian cuisine for dinner if you’re looking for a quick break from Turkish cuisines.

There are cafes, shops, and people watching opportunities galore here, though I’m partial to the funky Istanbul souvenirs you can get in the neighborhood’s art galleries.

If you want to see some fabulous Galata views from above, climb the tower at sunset (or right after for fewer crowds)!

Feed a Street Cat Your Leftovers

Turkey - Istanbul - Cat at the Blue Mosque

You’ll no doubt notice the amazing street cats of Istanbul, and you’ll probably see that most of them are pretty well taken care of. It seems as though every shop and cafe in Istanbul is feeding ten or so of these marvelous animals.

However, if you find yourself with a bit of extra food (provided its feline-approved), spend a few minutes sharing your dinner with one or two of these nifty critters.

Want to know why Istanbul has so many cats? Jodi over at Legal Nomads explains why Istanbul and Cats go together better than peanut butter and jelly.

Crash at Your Hotel

Turkey - Istanbul - Accommodations

One thing that people forget when they travel…it’s okay to have an early night every once in a while! Don’t fill up every single night of your trip – leave at least one night where you can come home early and enjoy your hotel digs – especially if you stay somewhere worth spending some extra time!

Istanbul Nightlife Tips

istanbul nightlife tour

Istanbul is one of my favorite cities in the world, but here are some tips to stay safe and enjoy your evening out.

First, get familiar with the local Istanbul tourist scams , many of which target tourists at night. You’re also more likely to have an issue with scammers if you’re visibly intoxicated (doubly so if you’re alone).

Many places take credit cards, but always double check just in case! You do not want to end up having issues paying at the end of your meal or time in a bar.

I prefer to use Uber when in Istanbul (though I’ve had plenty of nice taxi rides in the city as well). I do have a friend who had a bad run-in with a taxi driver at night trying to break into his apartment. Just to be safe, stick to Uber after dark so that there’s a record of your ride and who your driver is.

Use common sense safety when in Istanbul, and your trip will go as smoothly as possible.

Organized Tours & Events To Book Ahead

Istanbul at Night: 15 Best Places to Visit & Things to Do

Maiden's Tower, one of the best views in Istanbul at night

If you’re looking for a city that never sleeps, look no further than Istanbul. Due to its international reputation, you may not realize that Istanbul nightlife is always thriving. There is certainly no shortage of places to visit and things to do in this vibrant and bustling metropolis, even after the sun goes down. From buzzing nightlife districts to atmospheric cafes and restaurants, there’s something for everyone in Istanbul at night.

If you’re visiting Istanbul and want to create a memorable night, we have 15 ideas for you.

List of things to do in Istanbul at night:

1. book a bosphorus cruise with dinner.

istanbul nightlife tour

A Bosphorus cruise can be romantic or just a relaxing way to enjoy a meal. The Bosphorus dinner cruise is the perfect gift as you can choose the type of dinner cruise you wish to go on.

Suppose you’re interested in culture and history. In that case, the private yacht you embark upon may take you to see the summer houses of the sultans: i.e., all the Ottoman Palaces that are on the Bosphorus strait.

You’ll get to see all the sights on the Asian and European sides, such as the Ortaköy Mosque or even the Maiden’s Tower in the center. If you’re lucky, you may even travel up to the Golden Horn to see the sights on the seraglio, such as the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace, the Hagia Sophia, or even the Galata Tower. All of those sites may take your breath away as Istanbul at night is something to be marveled at.

Alternatively, you can book a dinner cruise with a Turkish night show. This may include music with Turkish instruments, belly dancers, a whirling dervish show, and enough alcohol to rival the Istanbul nightlife on the shores.

2. Dance at a rooftop bar

There are some fantastic rooftop bars in Istanbul and they offer stunning views of the city – perfect for a romantic night or an evening with friends. Many of these bars have DJs and live music, so they’re perfect for dancing the night away.

Be sure to dress up a bit, as most rooftop bars have a dress code. If you want a quick Istanbul nightlife guide and want to enjoy the view and sip on some delicious cocktails, we have a list of the best rooftop bars that you should visit in Istanbul:

3. Visit a Turkish bath

istanbul nightlife tour

There’s something mystical about the famous Turkish bath. It might be the relaxing oil massage followed by an invigorating body wash that’ll make you feel like a completely new person. Moreover, watching the steam dancing around the domes above you is a transcendent experience that has captured the hearts and imagination of visitors and locals alike. Some hammams in Istanbul remain open late at night and may help you unwind after a busy day of sightseeing.

If you’re curious as to which Turkish baths you should visit in Istanbul, we do have a blog post you may enjoy:

istanbul nightlife tour

The whirling dervishes originated in the 1300s. They follow the teachings of Rumi (also known as Mevlana). They were recognized by UNESCO in 2008 as a cultural heritage. You can watch the whirling dervish show as an event in several places, such as a dinner cruise. However, the actual whirling dervish ceremony is usually available at the Mevlevi Lodges.

A wonderful location to watch whirling dervishes is at the Galata Mevlevihanesi. Every Sunday at 5 p.m., there is a whirling dervishes performance. Tickets quickly sold out, so get them before they go on sale Saturday afternoon via the museum directly. If you can’t make it on a Sunday, Hodjapasha in Sirkeci has daily whirling dervishes performance.

5. Watch the dancing fountain in front of the Blue Mosque

istanbul nightlife tour

The Blue Mosque, also known as Sultanahmet Mosque, is always a delight to visit. Sultanahmet Park, in the day, usually has street vendors selling exotic treats. During special events or Ramadan, the Blue Mosque and Sultanahmet Park are always spectacularly decorated. During the evenings, the illuminated fountain is magical. The dancing fountain is within walking distance of the usual tourist sites such as Topkapı Palace, Hagia Sophia, and so forth.

Is there anything that’s quite like good food? Perhaps you’re in Istanbul with your family, or you’re one of the many solo travelers that visit this beautiful country. In that case, a food tour is perfect for discovering the many restaurants in the city and making new friends. A tour is also superior to a three-course dinner because you get a sampling of a variety of scrumptious food and the walking helps digest what you’ve just eaten. Plus, you have copious amounts of Turkish tea .

If you pick a suitable tour, you’ll visit highlights of tourist sites as well as enjoy scrumptious food. If you’re interested, we host a night tour, and we also have several day trips around different neighborhoods. Our Taksim tour will have you exploring Istanbul at night.

Our meeting point is in Taksim square and will take you around the historic Beyoğlu district . We provide traditional Turkish drinks , and the food is human-sized – not sample-sized. One food tour and you’re done eating for the day. If this sounds like your ideal way to explore Istanbul, the link is below. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes. During the winter season, don’t forget to bring a jacket as Istanbul can get really cold.

Flavours of the Old City

Kadıköy street food tour, 7. watch the sunset and maiden’s tower from salacak, üsküdar.

istanbul nightlife tour

Watching the sunset in almost every spot in Istanbul is an ethereal experience. If you want the ultimate place to be captivated, you may wish to visit the Salacak district in Üsküdar. You’ll get to see the Maiden’s Tower light up when the sun goes down. If you can’t afford a Bosphorus cruise, this is the next best thing. The sun may only take a few minutes to set but that’s enough time to feel enveloped in the spell of Istanbul. Click here to learn the Istanbul sunset time for today.

8. Join pub crawls

istanbul nightlife tour

There’s something spellbinding about drinking in a magical city like Istanbul. Istanbul’s nightlife is no less exciting than any other European city’s nightlife.

If you travel with friends, you can just hit the Beyoğlu district and go crazy. However, if you want to avoid tourist traps, you may wish to join an Istanbul pub crawl. Women solo travelers may find comfort in joining the tours, as they’re usually reserved for mixed groups.

If you just hop on to a search engine and type in Istanbul pub crawl, you’ll find many reputable companies. Try a traditional Turkish coffee after to sober you up.

9. Visit a shopping mall

istanbul nightlife tour

If you missed out on the gorgeous carpets in the Grand Bazaar or want one of the multi-colored scarves that the locals are wearing, head on down to a shopping mall. Most malls are open until 10 pm, so if you’re up for it, you can experience Istanbul at night like a local. Now you know why Istanbulites are so fashion conscious – because they have the time after work to pick up a cute dress or an awesome shirt. Even if you’re only interested in window shopping, this might be one of the most underrated things to do in Istanbul at night.

10. Visit Ortaköy

istanbul nightlife tour

Get there a little early to pick up a baked potato as you’ve never seen it before. Turkish baked potatoes (kumpir), especially the ones from Ortaköy, are a thing of legend. They’re made from the daddy of potatoes before being stuffed with so many fillings that you may struggle to carry them. If you get there even earlier, you can give yourself a moment to explore the Ortaköy mosque.

Then, with a full stomach and a warm soul, you may wish to head on over to watch the lights of the Bosphorus bridge. Seeing the gorgeous colors reflected on the ocean is always a memorable night. If you’re looking to do a bit of soul searching or looking for a cheap romantic date, seeing the lights of Istanbul at night might be what you need.

11. Smoke shisha (hookah)

istanbul nightlife tour

Called Nargile in Turkish, hookah bars are places where people gather around, tell stories, and just relax like a bar without alcohol. It may be why it’s a favorite in fiction to portray mysticism. For example, the caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland smokes a hookah on a mushroom and speaks in riddles. If this is your jam, there are plenty of places open till late.

istanbul nightlife tour

12. Stroll Istiklal street

istanbul nightlife tour

Any reputable Istanbul nightlife guide will include Istiklal Street on the list. Aside from the Istanbul nightlife being located here, there are plenty of historical sites, churches, and museums to explore. Istiklal Street is a time capsule with its nostalgic trams that shouldn’t be missed.

Just when you feel thirsty, make your way to the bustling Nevizade street and join the locals for a glass of Turkish beer in one of the many pubs.

13. Watch a soccer game

istanbul nightlife tour

You can easily find a place, during a pub crawl, that has the game on. It may be harder to visit the stadiums to see the footballers live – especially last minute. That’s because Istanbul is a city crazy over soccer. Even if you’re not a fan of sports, watching the game may end up being a memorable night as everyone becomes one big family when the game is on.

14. Visit the Pera museum

istanbul nightlife tour

One of the most extraordinary things to do in Istanbul at night is to view orientalist paintings, learn more about Anatolian weights and measures, and see the ceramics from Kütahya. If you see exciting artworks in the Grand Bazaar, it’s likely to have been created by Osman Hamdi Bey. His work is on display in the Pera Museum which is open until 10 pm.

15. Visit a meyhane and drink rakı

Friends tossing and cheering with Turkish raki

The classic entertainment of Istanbul at night is the meyhane. You will find yourself enjoying the delicious meze with rakı. Most Meyhane’s in Istanbul serves Turkish cuisine , and some even have belly dancers. If you’re fortunate, perhaps one of those belly dancers may invite guests to the floor to teach them belly dancing.

Final words

Istanbul is a fantastic city to explore after the sun has set. Whether you’re looking for some of the best street food in Turkey , or want to enjoy an evening out with your friends and family at one of the many bars, this vibrant metropolis offers plenty of options when it comes time to have fun.

You can sense the pulse of modern Istanbul in the busy alleys of Beyoglu and Taksim , where you can find modern clubs playing anything from pop tunes to electronic dance music. Go to areas like Asmalimescit or Kadikoy to discover a more alternative and indie culture where local musicians perform live and put on shows.

Historic Charm Meets Modern Glamour

The capacity of Istanbul’s nightlife to combine the old and the new adds to its special charm. Among the most well-liked bars and clubs in the city are located in historic buildings and along cozy cobblestone streets that are illuminated by warm lantern light. An atmosphere that is exclusive to Istanbul is created by the contrast between the modern entertainment and the historic buildings.

bosphorus restaurants

Rooftop bars with views of the Bosphorus provide a modern setting for taking in the city skyline, while the waterfront clubs of Ortakoy and Bebek provide a more sophisticated atmosphere that is ideal for those looking to add a little sophistication to their night out.

Culinary Delights After Dark

There’s more to Istanbul’s nightlife than just music and dancing. There are also delicious foods that come to life at night.

Hot Spots, Popular Districts & Neighborhoods

European side: the heartbeat of nightlife, beyoglu district.

Here you may experience the vibrant nightlife of Istanbul, with its array of lights, sounds, and flavors. A place where the excitement is great and the nights are unforgettable, Taksim is the beating core of Istanbul’s nightlife. The famous Taksim Square is the starting point for the lively Istiklal Street , that is a pedestrian boulevard adorned with ancient structures, international boutiques, and street artists.

nevizade

The district’s smaller nightlife scene becomes apparent as you go deeper into the area, with its winding lanes of Asmali Mescit and Nevizade Street leading to quaint bars and old-fashioned taverns that showcase the local culture. Famous for its antique tram, the Tunnel line neighborhood is home to some of the city’s most unique nightclubs and is a mecca for underground music aficionados.

If you are looking for hip clubs and quaint taverns, Çukurcuma and Galatasaray are two of the side alleys off Istiklal that are worth exploring. If you’re looking for a place to meet up for the evening, Taksim Square is a great choice.

galata tower surroundings

A more bohemian nightlife experience can be had in the Galata area, which is nestled around the landmark Galata Tower . Enjoy a one-of-a-kind fusion of classic and cutting-edge shows in this historic district, where cultures collide.

istanbul bars

Stylish cafes line the streets, which, when the sun goes down, turn into exciting bars. The artistic and trendy Galata nightlife is perfect for individuals who want to have a fun and culturally diverse evening. A number of charming boutique hotels with rooftop bars provide guests with breathtaking views of the Golden Horn and the cityscape from above.

ortakoy at night

People love the coastline area, which has the neighborhoods of Ortakoy  and Arnavutkoy , because it has bars and parties with amazing views of the Bosphorus. Because it has a more relaxed vibe, this place is popular with young workers and college students.

Ortakoy’s nightlife looks great against the lit-up Bosphorus Bridge . The high-class pubs and restaurants in Bebek are popular with stylish people, and Nisantasi has both high-class eating and shopping. Rich people in the city hang out in the stylish clubs and rooftop bars of Sisli and Etiler to unwind and meet new people.

Sisli District

The more posh and contemporary neighborhood of Sisli in Istanbul is famous for its exclusive nightlife. The neighborhood surrounding Nisantasi in particular is filled with posh nightclubs and wine bars that attract an upscale demographic.

A lot of famous people and members of the city’s upper class hang out at Sisli’s chic lounges and restaurants. Malls like Cevahir , which offer a wide range of services including movie theaters and late-night eateries, are also located in the area.

Kadikoy district.

Kadikoy  is known as the culture center of the Asian side, and its young energy is contagious. There are a lot of fun places to meet up before a date in the district’s market area, including cafes, bistros, and pubs.

People who enjoy independent music and art often visit Iskele Street and Bahariye Street because of the abundance of live music venues and art spaces on these streets. “Bar Street” is a common nickname for Kadife Street . It’s a narrow lane lined with numerous unique pubs and bars, each with its own character.

A more relaxed atmosphere may be found on Caddebostan Bar Street , where you can find waterside lounges and pubs perfect for escaping the hustle and bustle of the city.

The Charm of Turkish Nights

These regions are where most of Istanbul’s traditional meyhanes (bars) are located. Outdoor seating and a focus on seafood await you at Kumkapi , a restaurant known for its vibrant environment.

You may get a taste of both the ancient and the contemporary on Istiklal Street , where meyhanes and trendy bars coexist harmoniously. Both locals and visitors flock to the pubs in Kadikoy for the inviting atmosphere, meze platters, and rakı, the legendary Turkish drink.

Best Things to Do in Istanbul At Night

In no particular order, here are the best nighttime activities in Istanbul, from night cruises to relaxing evening entertainment!

1. Go On A Bosphorus Dinner Cruise

Perhaps the most popular thing to do at night in Istanbul is go on an evening cruise on the Bosphorus. The Bosphorus Strait is one of the world’s most beautiful waterways and offers an incredible view of both European and Asian Istanbul from afar.

The evening cruise takes you to both the European side and Asian side of Istanbul, showcasing some of the most important landmarks of the city. You can see some of the most spectacular summer houses and palaces of Istanbul, including the places where Ottoman sultans used for summer vacation.

Some Bosphorus dinner cruise even includes evening entertainment such as belly dancers and music performances. Along with the complimentary Turkish meze and local drinks such as Turkish tea, it is a comprehensive experience that tourists cannot miss. The cruises typically last around 2 to 4 hours, depending on whether dinner is included.

When we did the evening cruise which took around 2 hours. Just seeing the buildings and lights flicker at night was enough to justify the cost. Besides, sitting out on the deck of the yacht after a long day of exploring Istanbul and feeling the wind breeze on our faces was an incredible way to unwind.

2. Enjoy A Turkish Bath

cagaloglu-hammam-Turkish-Bath

If you want something relaxing to do in Istanbul at night, then look no further than a traditional Turkish Bath (Hamam). Turkish Baths are a great way to unwind after a long day of sightseeing. The baths have been around since at least the 8th century and were originally built as places for people to get clean and relax .

If you have never had, or heard of, a Turkish Bath before, it’s a combination of deep cleaning and massage. You are required to steam on a marble table (like the one pictured), before getting a scrub from an attendant and a massage with foam. The result is you feel relaxed and like a 100 pounds of dead skin has fallen off you.

You can find Turkish bath establishments all over Istanbul, but the most popular ones are likely to be in Sultanahmet or Beyoğlu. Our favorite one is Çemberlitaş Hamamı , the oldest Turkish Bath in Istanbul! It is conveniently situated next to the Grand Bazaar.

If you’re interested in trying a Turkish bath, it is important to know that there’s no need to be embarrassed. Most of the time, people come in simply for a relaxing soak and some much-needed skin care. It’s also perfectly okay to doze off in the bath – there’s no need to be anxious about your appearance!

It’s important to note that Istanbul’s Turkish Baths are separated between men and women, so if you’re travelling as a couple, you’ll need to look for those with couples suites or be ok with a little “me time”. We personally enjoyed having separate experiences, as we could compare notes afterwards (spoiler alert, we had the same experience).

3. Watch The Whirling Dervish Show

Whirling-Dervishes-Istanbul

Perhaps there is nothing more iconic to Turkish culture than the Whirling Dervishes ceremony. Invented by Jalaluddin Rumi, the famous Sufi Muslim mystic and poet in the 13th century, the Whirling Dervish ceremony is a form of meditation used as a way to connect with God. Rumi believed that there were many ways you could reach God, so why not do it in the form of dance and music?

Even if you’re not interested in the spiritual part of the Whirling Dervish show, the performance is definitely worth seeing – it’s one of the most captivating things to do in Istanbul at night.

There are many places to see this unique ritual, but we recommend the Hocapaşa Culture Center , a 550-year-old restored Turkish Bath.

4. Take a Night Food Tour

Turkish-Street-Food

Without a doubt, one of the most famous things about Turkey is its incredible cuisine. And there is no better way to experience the local dishes and foods than with a local tour guide .

On the food tour, you can learn about the history of Turkish cuisine, and the ingredients that are used to make the dishes so flavorful and unique.

Typically, we don’t like doing food tours because we just walk around and eat the street food of Istanbul that takes our fancy. But Turkish food is so unique that almost every dish is unheard of outside of Turkey (besides kebab of course). So it can be a little overwhelming navigating the Istanbul food scene and finding the best dishes possible.

And that is why we think that a night food tour is the best way to get a deep understanding of Turkish food. You can find out about the history, customs, and flavors of the local cuisine. Plus, there is no better way to enjoy a night out in Istanbul than with a group of fellow food lovers.

5. Explore Istiklal Street

Istiklal Street At Night

If there is a place to visit in Istanbul at night, it is Istiklal Street. Also known as the Grand Avenue of Pera, Istiklal Street is a 1.4-kilometer-long pedestrian street and one of Istanbul’s most famous streets.

In the daytime, this area is bustling with people enjoying the shops and restaurants. To be honest, we have never seen that many people on one street ever.

At night, Istiklal Street is popular for its nightlife. There are plenty of eateries, bars, and nightclubs within close proximity to the street.

Located near Taksim, Istiklal Street is great for people who want to explore different types of night life in Istanbul without having to go too far from the city center.

Plus, this nightlife area in Istanbul is affordable, so even travelers on a budget can enjoy it!

📚 Read More: Things to Do on Istiklal Street!

6. Climb Up Galata Tower

Galata-Tower-Sunset

One of the most historical sites in Istanbul is Galata Tower. Completed in 1348, Galata Tower was once the tallest building in all of Constantinople (Istanbul’s name under the Byzantine rule).

If you’re looking to experience some of the city’s history and architecture while enjoying excellent views, climbing up Galata Tower is a great option. There is a lift that takes you up to the seventh floor of the tower, but you’ll need to climb up two more flights of stairs to get to the observation platform.

During the day, the lift often has a long queue so visitors sometimes have to wait an hour. During the night, Galata Tower is much quieter so guests can have a more enjoyable time. From the Galata Tower, you can see both continents of Asia, the Bosphorus Strait, and the Golden Horn.

It is certainly one of the best places to visit in Istanbul at night.

7. Go Late Night Shopping

Istanbul’s locals love to go shopping. They love it so much that there is an Istanbul Shopping Festival every year and the event lasts 40 days and 40 nights!

That is why one of the non-touristy things to do in Istanbul at night is to go late-night shopping! Unfortunately, visitors won’t be able to go shopping in night markets or any night bazaars as they usually close around sunset, but there are plenty of malls and shopping centers in Istanbul open until 10 PM in the city.

Some of the most famous ones are the Mall of Istanbul and Istanbul Cevahir . Those two malls are beautiful and so massive that you can spend probably days and not finish browsing through every shop.

8. Visit Pera Museum

Pera-Museum-Istanbul

If you are looking for relaxing activities at night in Istanbul, check out Pera Museum. As one of the few museums in Istanbul that opens at night, Pera Museum is a fascinating museum that tells the story of Istanbul through its art.

There are a total of 5 floors, with the top three floors used for temporary exhibitions. The bottom 2 floors feature permanent exhibitions, many of which focus on 18th to 19th century Orientalist paintings.

One of the most famous paintings inside Pera Museum is “The Tortoise Trainer” by Osman Hamdi Bey. The painting depicts an anachronistic historical character training tortoises. This painting is often referred to as the Mona Lisa of Turkey and its original work is one of the most exclusive and expensive art!

  • Opening Hours: Tuesday – Saturday 10 AM to 7 PM, Friday 10 AM to 10 PM, Sunday 12 PM to 6 PM, Closed Mondays

If partying is more your scene, then you’ll want to make the most of Istanbuls’ thriving Istanbul night life scene!

1. Smoke Hookah In A Hookah Lounge

Shisha-Hookah-Istanbul-Turkey

If you are looking to smell like a true Istanbulite, then you should try smoking hookah in an A Hookah Lounge. Known as Nargile in Turkish, hookah lounges are the perfect place for people to socialize, hang out, chat and just have a relaxing time.

Hookah lounges are usually cozier than traditional nightlife settings such as bars and clubs, so it is perfect for an easy night out.

If you don’t like shisha, you can still hang out and enjoy the company. It is usually good fun at a hookah lounge.

Our favorite ones are Lotiz Lounge & Hookah and ikram Hookah & Lounge .

2. Try Raki, The National Drink of Turkey

Raki-Turkish-National-Drink

No Istanbul visit is complete without trying Raki, the national drink of Turkey. An alcoholic drink made of twice-distilled grapes and anise, Raki is super strong. That is why one of the most popular ways to drink it is to first dilute it with chilled water or ice cubes. This gives Raki the iconic milky-white color that you can see, but the liquor itself is transparent.

When we drank Raki the first time, we had it without it being diluted. I can tell you that the inside of my mouth was numb for a whole minute after drinking it… So dilute it!

Raki is typically served with meze, a selection of Turkish appetizers. Getting together and drinking raki is a very common social event in Turkey, where friends and family gather to drink and chat.

3. Go Party At One Of The Best Nightclubs in Istanbul

Rooftop-Bars-Istanbul

Nightlife and nightclubs go hand-to-hand, and it is no exception in Istanbul. To fully experience how incredible the nightlife is in Istanbul, you must go to a nightclub.

There are so many great nightclubs in Istanbul that it can be hard to decide which one to go to. For travelers that want to experience something posh, head over to one of the clubs in Ortakoy in the Besiktas district. This is home to some of the most luxurious clubs in Istanbul such as Sortie and Ruby .

For a more hipster experience, the areas of Karakoy and Taksim Square are filled with more budget-friendly nightclubs. This is usually where most tourists go because is it situated near the historic centre of the city.

Lastly, there is Kadife Street in Kadikoy on the Asian side. This area is more local-friendly and it is less common to see tourists!

4. Go On A Pub Crawl

Though a very touristy thing to do, a pub crawl is a great way to meet other travelers and explore some of the best nightlife scenes in Istanbul, especially if you are a solo traveler.

The Istanbul pub crawl is designed with ice breakers and activities where you can meet other participants in a stress-free setting with lots of drinks! Best of all, the tour leaders know how to make sure you have a good time.

The local guides will take you on some of the coolest nightlife hubs, rooftop parties, and trendy bars only known to local Istanbullus. It is surely a great way to explore the nightlife of the city and make some new friends and memories along the way!

5. Bar Hopping In Kadikoy

Istanbul-Bar-Hopping

If you are looking to get off the beaten path and experience a more local side of Istanbul’s nightlife, then go bar hopping in Kadikoy. The neighborhood of Kadikoy is a laid-back residential area in the Asian side of Istanbul, and there are a few streets that have so many amazing bars.

Visitors can go from one bar to another, trying out the different types of local cocktails and snacks. And since it isn’t as touristy, you are going to be able to enjoy a more authentic nightlife experience here.

Whether you are looking for a bustling bar with live music or a more intimate spot to enjoy a drink, Kadikoy has it all. And for our pro tip, make sure you come back early in the morning the next day for some of the best breakfast in Istanbul to nurse your hangover.

Admire Istanbul’s Night View

If you’re looking for incredible views, the view of Istanbul by night is one to remember. Here are the best places to see the best views of Istanbul at night.

1. Rooftop Bars

Funny enough, some of the best night views of Istanbul aren’t from historic vantage points, but from modern rooftop bars. In fact, a beautiful view has become such an essential of rooftop bars in Istanbul, that it is almost impossible to find one without a nice view.

Our favorite ones are the ones in Ortakoy, Besiktas. Most of the rooftop bars are situated next to the Bosphorus Strait and offer beautiful views of the water, Ortakoy Mosque, and the Bosphorus Bridge, an iconic landmark in Istanbul that lights up at night.

There are some really good ones in Taksim as well, such as 360 Istanbul . From its penthouse, you can have views similar to the one from Galata Tower – with Golden Horn, Bosphorus Strait and both continents in sight. The view is so spectacular that it is rated as one of the best rooftop restaurants in the world by CNN .

2. Sultanahmet Park

Sultanahmet-Park-At-Night

The historic centre of Istanbul, Sultanahmet , might not have the best nightlife in Istanbul. But what it does have are incredible views of some of the most important buildings in Istanbul, such as Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque.

Though the mosques are closed at night, their exterior is lit up during this time, not to mention the illuminated fountain which creates a dazzling display.

Combined with the small crowds compared to the daytime, nighttime offers a unique perspective of these historical landmarks. And perhaps there is no better place to admire the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Istanbul than Sultanahmet Park. Here you can see both the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia at the same time.

One of the best features of Sultanahmet Park is the Hurrem Sultan Fountain, a historic water fountain that lights up at night. It is also called the Dancing Fountain because of its light and water performance that looks as if the water is dancing.

Combined with an unworldly ambiance at the heart of the historic center in Istanbul, visiting Sultanahmet Square is an amazing and free thing to do in Istanbul at night.

3. Bosphorus Bridge

Bosphorus-Bridge-At-Night-Istanbul

One of the most iconic landmarks in Istanbul that comes to life after dark is the Bosphorus Bridge, a spectacular 1560-meter long suspension bridge that connects the European side of Istanbul with the Asian side.

At night, the bridge and its steel towers are lit up and turn into a beautiful sight to behold. Unfortunately, visitors cannot walk on the Bosphorus Bridge, but there are many locations where you can take in the breathtaking views.

On the Asian side, you have Zippline Nakkaştepe park, which is located near the Bosphorus Strait.  Çamlıca Hill is also an excellent vantage point. But since it is higher up, it is harder to get to. This park is the home of the biggest mosque in Turkey, the Çamlıca Mosque.

On the European Side, there are plenty of rooftop bars in Ortakoy that offer spectacular scenery, such as Sortie and Ruby . You can even see the Ortakoy Mosque from here, and it is also lit up at night!

3. Maiden’s Tower In Uskudar

Maiden-Tower-Istanbul-Night

If you are looking for the perfect sunset spot in Istanbul, head over to Uskudar on the Asian side. This seaside neighborhood is home to hip cafes and bars, as well as its iconic fish markets.

Though this isn’t what visitors tend to visit when they come to Uskudar, they usually come to see Maiden’s Tower, a medieval tower located just a few hundred meters from the shores of Uskudar.

Over the years, Maiden’s Tower has had a variety of roles – from being a lighthouse to a fortification tower to even a quarantine hospital.

Nowadays, it is one of the best places to visit in Istanbul, especially for the beautiful sunset!

One of the must-visit rooftops is  L eb-i Derya  in Beyoğlu . The restaurant/bar has several venues on the 6th and 7 th  floors with great views and a romantic ambiance. When you are in Istanbul in summer, make sure to head up to the  Captain's Quarter  on the top floor.

For a more luxurious experience, Vogue Restaurant & Bar on the 13-story BJK Plaza is for you. Surrounded by a beautiful backdrop, you can sip on one of their expertly crafted molecular cocktails. If you are lucky, you might even run into some local celebrities...

Looking for a more relaxed, Bohemian atmosphere with a lively night vibe? Then  Balkon Restaurant & Bar  in Pera district is the place for you. Raise a glass (of the reasonable priced drinks) to a 360-degree view of Istanbul's illuminated skyline, including the Historical Peninsula.

Other must-visit rooftop to check out is the Instagram hotspot Seven Hills Restaurant , featuring amazing photo opportunities of Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque.

2. Taksim - Nevizade Street

Beyoglu at Night Itanbul Turkey

Taksim is undoubtedly one of the most famous nightlife hotspots of Istanbul. You can find here a wide range of restaurants and bars, including exclusive scene bars, cozy and affordable pubs and authentic meyhanes,  Turkish taverns.

A great area for sampling authentic Turkish nightlife is  Nevizade Street , located in a side street of Istiklal Avenue close to Çiçek Pasaji. The lively street hits all the right notes for a great night out: bars and meyhanes , delicious Turkish food and drinks, an intimate and casual atmosphere, reasonable prices, and most importantly, an authentic cultural experience. No wonder, it’s popular with locals and tourists alike.

Wander through the vibrant Nevizade Street and soak up its vibe. To really get a sense of the city, we recommend you to choose one of the numerous meyhanes where you can enjoy  rakı  with your friends or better yet, with the locals.

Rakı, the anise-flavored Turkish national drink, is a must when visiting Nevizade Street – or Turkey for that matter. For the most authentic tavern experience, we recommend setting up a  rakı table  with a variety of  meze  (Turkish starters) or seafood. Alternatively, you can enjoy Turkish beer.

Along with good food and good company, music is an important part of the experience. Don’t be surprised if you hear live musicians playing  Fasıl music with darbuka (drums), clarinet and violin.

Most of the meyhanes on Nevizade Street offer a great cultural experience, but we recommend Nevizade , Ney’le Mey’le Meyhane, Keyif Nevizade Restaurant and Lambo .

3. Kadiköy - Barlar Sokak

Istanbul Kadikoy at Night

One of the most popular addresses in Istanbul's bar scene is hidden in Kadiköy .  This area on the Asian side of Istanbul is the trendiest neighborhood in the city and has countless great bars and pubs to offer. You will find the very best of them in the main bar street of Kadıköy, which is called  Barlar Sokaği in Turkish or by its real name Kadife Street . As the name suggests, Kadiköy’s beloved bar street is lined with numerous bars, pubs and clubs .

While it’s rather quiet during the day, the street turns into one of the most popular nightlife areas in the evening. Particularly on weekends, you should expect crowds of people.  With its relaxed atmosphere, the place is a great spot to wind down with friends over a few beers. In the evening, you can expect live music or DJ performances until past midnight.

Most of the bars boost a rock vibe with alternative music, rock & roll atmosphere and craft beer. But you will find here a bar for every taste.  Two legendary addresses, for example, are the iconic Arka Oda or Bina . The gloomy Karga Bar and Buddha Sahne are also very popular.

You can expect reasonable prices. While the hip neighborhood attracts a young, mixed crowd, especially students, it’s not yet on the radar of many tourists. It definitely should be, though!

Our tip: Hop on a trans-continental ferry ride to Kadiköy, get a feel of the hip neighborhood while enjoying a cold beer or cocktails and immersing yourself in the Asian side of Istanbul.

4. Beşiktaş Carşı

Besiktas Football Club Stadium & Museum in Istanbul

Another fantastic spot for a great night out and a must-visit for all football lovers is Beşiktaş Çarşı!

Carşı (Turkish for: marketplace), filled with bars, cafés, shops, book stores and taverns , is the beating heart of Istanbul’s middle-class Beşiktaş neighborhood, north of Dolmabahçe Palace .

The focal point of this vibrant area is the fish market, flanked at the back by numerous meyhanes , perfect for a night out. Another hub is the small square with a black eagle statue, the symbol of Istanbul’s beloved Beşiktaş football club.

You can find plenty of bars and pubs where you can relax with friends, drink beer and have a good time. The prices are very reasonable. Since Çarşı is especially popular with young people – and of course Beşiktaş fans, there is always a youthful and energetic vibe. On weekends, the streets are so packed with people that it seems to be chaotic at times.

If you happen to be visiting on a match night, be prepared for Beşiktaş Çarşı to fill up with large groups of fans. Beşiktaş fans flood into Carşı’s pubs and bars to watch the match or for a pre-match beer on their way to the nearby Vodafone Park stadium. You should expect it to get pretty loud, fans will go wild - and sometimes even rowdy. However, the experience and atmosphere are truly exceptional. If you're curious, come early for a pre-match beer and soak up the unique energy. A local all-time favorite is Kazan  bar. Other popular bars we can recommend are Craft Beer Lab , Joker No.19 and No 24 Pub Cafe Beşiktaş .

Beşiktaş Çarşı can be easily reached. It is just a few steps away from Beşiktaş Pier and Dolmabahçe Palace. There are many bus lines that will take you to Carşi within 25 minutes from Taksim Square. Kabataş tram station is also within walking distance.

Karakoy in Istanbul in Turkey

The up and coming district of Karaköy is one of the hippest areas of Istanbul and the place to be at night! With its proximity to Taksim and Istanbul’s Old City, as well as great access to public transport, you can easily get there by tram or ferry.

The waterfront neighborhood, known for its Bohemian charm, is home to trendy fashion boutiques, hip cafés and bars, restaurants and art galleries. Hardly a day goes by without another trendy bar, café or club opening in the rapidly changing neighborhood.

Karaköy is very popular with the young people and hipsters who fill up the bars and cafés at the evenings and weekends. Establishments are typically a bit more expensive compared to other parts of the city, but still within acceptable limits.

Especially trendy is the area between the French Gateway (Fransız Geçidi) and Kılıç Ali Paşa Mosque . You will find here bars and cafes that cater for all tastes and moods. Some places are very chic, some very relaxed. While they are typically laid-back during the day, after 10 p.m. many of them transform into dance floors with good music, DJ performances - and quite often people dancing in the street.

As night falls, go dancing at   Mitte Karaköy . If you want to enjoy fresh cocktails blended with Karaköy vibes in a sophisticated, retro-industrial surrounding,  Unter is the place to be. Our favorites also include Finn Karaköy,   Berlin Line Karaköy and   Chez Moi .

Bosphorus nightlife guide.

The Bosphorus shore is THE nightlife hotspot of Istanbul during the summer season. Not only do exclusive clubs open their roof terraces with a breathtaking panorama, the long coast is also lined with trendy and luxurious discos, most of which have a view of the shimmering Bosphorus Bridge.

The nightlife is more homogeneous than in the other districts. Istanbul's elite and celebrities also come here.

Along the Bosphorus you have the privilege of enjoying your cocktail with a view of Istanbul’s skyline while dancing under the stars. But be careful: the better the view, the higher the prices.

Whirling Dervish Ceremony

Whirling Dervish Show in Istanbul

The Mystical show of the dervishes is among the most popular performances to see in Turkey. People who perform this mystical performance are called "Semazen - Whirling Dervish". Those who have adopted the Mevlevi belief can become “Semazen” by taking a tough Sema training.

Sema literally means “sky or universe” , but in Mevlevi belief; it refers the act of hearing. That turning movement symbolizes the formation of man reaching the supreme God, the formation of the universe and the resurrection of the construction in the universe.

It is done by the Mevlevi order in the Historical Hamamizade Ismail Dede Efendi House. The Mevlevi whirling dance performance has been declared as a “UNESCO Heritage of Humanity”. This spiritual show takes about an hour. Get your tickets with a -5% discount through the link below.

Beware of Tourist Traps!

As in any city, there are scams and attempts at fraud in Istanbul, too. Fortunately, in most cases the tricks of the fraudsters are obvious to the traveler.

Our overview is intended to help you avoid tourist traps during a night out in Istanbul.

1. I'll invite you to a beer.

For this tourist trap you will usually be approached by a friendly and good English-speaking, young man in the area around Taksim Square - especially if you are traveling alone.

As usual in small talk, topics such as origin, work, etc. are discussed. After a short time, the tourist is invited to a beer in a popular bar.

There the accomplices, mostly women, join in and have a drink.  The nasty surprise is that the bill, which is hundreds of Turkish Lira, is completely passed on to the traveler. A trip to the nearest ATM is guaranteed.

2. Chef's suggestion

Always have a menu shown with prices for drinks and dishes or ask explicitly before ordering.

In some fish restaurants under Galata Bridge, for example, it can happen that free drinks are offered.

Without being asked, two glasses of wine, bread and water are placed on the table. The fish is also served larger than ordered.

All drinks including free drinks and dishes are now shown on the bill. The bill should be checked for accuracy.

3. The taxi drivers

Insist on using the taxameter ! The use of the taxameter is now mandatory in Turkey.

Otherwise, the drivers often like to negotiate particularly low prices. The trick some drivers do is speaking supposedly poor English.

At the end of the ride, the agreed amount turns out to be a misunderstanding. Be careful when paying afterwards.

It is best to hold onto the banknote until you have received the change. If you feel cheated, you should definitely write down the number of the taxi and the driver's license number and report it to the tourist police station opposite the Basilica Cistern.

4. From location to location

It is better not to go on spontaneous trips that require a taxi to get to the next club.

If you still decide to do so, contact the nearest taxi office directly.

Under certain circumstances it can happen that you unintentionally end up in a strip club, especially in remote areas like Aksaray .

Remember that in St. Pauli you also have to pay for the bottle of vodka or whiskey that you buy your companion - at an expensive price.

If you prefer to be in the club quickly, you can count on a shockingly expensive bill.

Raki, often referred to as “Lion’s Milk” due to its cloudy appearance when mixed with water, is Turkey’s national alcoholic drink. This anise-flavored aperitif is typically enjoyed as an accompaniment to a meze, which consists of various appetizers. To savor it the traditional way, mix raki with water and sip it slowly. The licorice-like flavor is both distinct and addictive.

Efes Pilsen: The Iconic Turkish Beer

istanbul nightlife tour

Efes Pilsen is the iconic Turkish beer, and it’s widely consumed throughout the country. This light and refreshing lager is the perfect choice for those looking for a classic beer experience. Whether you’re at a rooftop bar or a local pub, you’ll likely find Efes Pilsen on the menu.

Turkish Delight Cocktail: A Sweet Indulgence

For those with a sweet tooth, the Turkish Delight Cocktail is a must-try. It’s a delightful concoction that combines the essence of Turkish delight with a mix of vodka, rosewater, and lemon juice. The result is a sweet, aromatic, and refreshing cocktail that encapsulates the essence of Turkish sweets.

Istanbul Mule: A Local Twist on a Classic

The Istanbul Mule is a local variation of the classic Moscow Mule. This Turkish rendition swaps out vodka for raki, offering a unique and spirited twist to the popular cocktail. With the addition of ginger beer, lime juice, and ice, it’s the perfect drink to enjoy on a warm Istanbul evening.

Black Sea Breeze: A Refreshing Refresher

The Black Sea Breeze cocktail is a light and refreshing choice for those who prefer a fruity and tangy taste. It’s made by combining local blackberry liqueur, vodka, and cranberry juice, resulting in a vibrant and visually appealing cocktail. This drink perfectly complements the stunning views you’ll find in Istanbul.

Turkish Coffee Liqueur: An Authentic Experience

If you’re a fan of Turkish coffee, you won’t want to miss the Turkish Coffee Liqueur. This rich and aromatic liqueur captures the essence of traditional Turkish coffee, with a hint of sweetness and a bold coffee flavor. It can be enjoyed straight, on the rocks, or used as a delightful addition to coffee-based cocktails.

Raki Sour: A Tangy Twist

The Raki Sour is a tangy and zesty cocktail that’s a playful take on the classic Whiskey Sour. It blends raki with lemon juice and a touch of sugar, creating a harmonious fusion of flavors. The result is a balanced cocktail that offers a tantalizing contrast between the anise notes of raki and the citrusy freshness of lemon.

Pomegranate Mojito: A Taste of the Mediterranean

The Pomegranate Mojito is a Mediterranean-inspired cocktail that combines the flavors of pomegranate, fresh mint, lime, and rum. This fruity and vibrant drink is perfect for those who appreciate a balance of sweet and tart. Sipping on a Pomegranate Mojito at a rooftop bar with city views is a quintessential Istanbul experience.

Mey is a traditional Turkish fruit wine that comes in a variety of flavors, including cherry, apricot, and blackberry. It’s often served chilled and makes for a sweet and refreshing beverage. Pair it with a cheese platter or a selection of meze for a complete Turkish wine experience.

Avoiding Scams: Tips for a Smooth Night Out

istanbul nightlife tour

As you immerse yourself in Istanbul’s vibrant nightlife, keep an eye out for a few common scams:

1. “Let Me Buy You a Beer” Scam

In popular tourist areas like Taksim Square, friendly locals might invite you for a drink. However, be cautious when it comes to the bill – it can end up being much higher than you expected. Stick to reputable places, check prices in advance, and don’t let strangers handle the bill.

2. Watch Out for the “Chef’s Suggestion”

Always ask for a menu with prices, especially at restaurants near the Galata Bridge. Some places may bring you extras like wine, bread, or fish portions you didn’t order, which can inflate your bill. Double-check your bill to avoid unexpected charges.

3. Taxi Tips: Insist on the Meter

When taking a taxi in Istanbul, ensure that the driver uses the meter – it’s the law. Some drivers might try to haggle or overcharge, so make sure to check your change and report any issues at the tourist police station near the Basilica Cistern.

4. Plan Your Transfers Wisely

If you’re hopping between clubs, consider calling a taxi from a nearby office rather than accepting rides from strangers. Some remote areas may lead you to unexpected places, so stay vigilant and don’t hesitate to ask for the meter.

Final Thoughts: Nightlife in Istanbul

Istanbul’s nightlife scene is a vibrant mix of cultures and experiences, making it a must-visit for any night owl or party enthusiast. With its diverse districts, stunning views, and a wide range of venues, there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re into clubbing, rooftop bars, or cozy taverns, Istanbul’s nightlife has it all.

So, gear up for an unforgettable night out in this captivating city. Just remember to stay safe, be cautious of common scams, and immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of Istanbul’s nightlife. With the right knowledge and a sense of adventure, you’re in for an incredible night on the town. Enjoy your Istanbul adventure!

Beyoğlu is undoubtedly the first place that comes to mind when it comes to Istanbul nightlife. This area, which covers Taksim-Istiklal Caddesi , Asmalımescit-tunnel line, has a wide selection ranging from nightclubs to restaurants, cocktail bars to pubs, bars to taverns, wine houses to concert halls. The Beyoğlu region, which is also the heart of artistic activities such as concerts, exhibitions, and theatres, still continues to survive, although it has lost some of its former vitality.

For those who want to get a better experience, we recommend regions such as Bebek, Ortaköy or Nişantaşı, Etiler, and Levent. Considering that Karaköy has also been on the trend lists in recent years, we can say that Istanbul's nightlife is a scale that appeals to people from all walks of life. Here are some examples of the European Side’s famous entertainment venues.

Sortie is one of the favorites of the Bosphorus line , with both a nightclub and restaurant alternative. Welcoming its customers for 12 months, this nightclub also fills the eye with its stylish design. It's an option that anyone who loves nightlife should give a chance on when their way to Istanbul falls.

Masquerade Istanbul

Masquerade Istanbul brings together the most popular artists in the world and the most distinguished guests of the city. It adds its own unique spirit to nightlife with its very special dance performances and enchanting atmosphere.  The venue, which can host up to 4000 guests , maximizes the limits of entertainment with the state-of-the-art sound and light systems used by world-famous entertainment clubs.

Klein Phönix

Phönix, which is part of Klein Entertainment, is the main club of the Klein group in Istanbul. With its 3500-person capacity , it is one of the most important examples of large segment clubs in the world in Turkey. The venue, where important international DJs and performers appear, also stands out with its original designs and shows. Providing service with its grand and magnificent architecture and shows, the entertainment continues until late in the morning at Klein Phönix . Let us remind you that while you are having fun in the venue, you can also encounter the works of important artists.

Karakoy Compilation

The bars and cafes in Karaköy are frequently packed with young people and hipsters in the evenings and on weekends. The prices are often slightly more than in other districts of the city, but still within acceptable bounds. The neighborhood around the French Gateway is particularly hip.

There are bars and cafes in this area that can accommodate all preferences and moods. By 10 PM, many of them change into dance floors with great music , DJ performances, and people dancing in the street. Go dancing at Mitte Karaköy as night falls. Unter is the place to go if you want to experience fresh drinks mixed with Karaköy vibes in a chic, retro-industrial setting. Moreover, Finn Karaköy, Berlin Line Karaköy, and Chez Moi are among our favorites.

Indigo is a nightclub known for hosting world-famous local and foreign DJs. Indigo, one of the fixtures of Tomtom Street , is attractive because it is home to the most important names of electronic music, as well as being located in the center of the city. Fans of electronic, house, techno, and pop fill the venue, dancing on the dance floor. Enjoy international DJs, live performances, and popular film clips that are screened around the club.

Babylon Bomonti

Babylon has been inviting music fans to its location in the popular Bomontiada entertainment complex which houses a few great restaurants and a boutique beer house. Located on the site of the historic Bomonti Brewery with its high ceilings and bare bricks, the iconic music venue exudes an industrial chic atmosphere and a relaxed vibe. The state-of-the-art main hall with a capacity of 500 people hosts live performances of various music genres many nights a week. From pop, rock, and jazz to electronic or local music - you'll always hear something to suit your taste. It's no surprise that Babylon attracts a mixed audience of all age groups.

Nightlife in Istanbul's Anatolian Side

Another area where Istanbul's nightlife is experienced is the Anatolian side. The places where nightlife is active on the Anatolian side are Kadıköy, Baghdad Avenue, Moda, and Suadiye. From Irish pubs to concert halls , from cafes to bistros, we also come across different options of venues on this side. Here are some of the most popular Anatolian Side entertainment venues.

Arka Oda, one of the oldest of Kadıköy bars street, is a place where you can sip your drink and enjoy music with the option of both indoor and outdoor areas. In the garden part, you can dive into long conversations and find yourself dancing at concept parties. Although crowded on weekends, you can even go for a friendly atmosphere.

Karga Bar is a place with decoration that gives the right to the definition of shabby elegance. You can enjoy the fireplace in winter and the garden in summer with its atmosphere resembling a haunted house. Live music and DJ performances in Istanbul can be encountered, as well as enjoy the dim environment.

Dorock XL, which welcomes its visitors with different concepts such as Dorock Stage, Dorock Cafe & Bistro, and Dorock Baze, is a place where you can especially watch live performances in Istanbul of local bands. Guests can enjoy concerts at the venue, which has one of Istanbul's biggest music stages. It has a great rock-and-roll vibe and you love it if you like sipping your cold bear with great rock music even during the day.

Kadikoy Compilation

The people of Istanbul's Asian side enjoy Kadikoy's vibrant nightlife. The most well-liked locations for vibrant evenings and entertainment in Kadikoy are the parallel Kadife Street, often known as “Bar Street”, and the adjacent Moda Street. Several excellent cafes, pubs, bistros, and taverns with live music can be found here. The most well-known cafes, pubs, and bars in Kadikoy are the Bina, Monks, Komodor, Dora King Gastro Pub, Zeplin, Arkaoda, Karga, Incir, Hera, Zincir, Lal, Teachers Pub, and Buddha Bar in Kadife Street.

Istanbul holidays

The only major city to straddle two continents, few places come as steeped in history as Istanbul. Once the seat of the Byzantine and Ottoman empires, and with a skyline studded with many domes and minarets, this vast metropolis is today home to 16 million people. More popular with visitors, the European side of Istanbul breaks down broadly into two sections. The old city of Sultanahmet is heaving with historic sights, while the more modern areas of Karakoy (Galata) and Beyoglu are packed to the gills with art galleries, cool restaurants, swanky bars and ritzy shops.
